Welcome to GPAC’s 32nd Season! It is with great excitement that I welcome you to experience the wonderful, eclectic mix of outstanding artistry, history in the making and pure joy that defines our 32nd season. Ever mindful of our mission to support the community with enriching artistic experiences and our role in enticing visitors to this great city, we have carefully curated a season that we sincerely believe has something for everyone. From world-class jazz and dance to amazing bluegrass and Broadway, this season offers the opportunity to revisit old favorites and discover new artists like Stella Cole and Lakecia Benjamin. In addition to our strong Center Stage and Jazz Series, we are thrilled to announce the return of two wonderful Memphis arts partners: New Ballet Ensemble will be here in November with their NutRemix holiday concert, and fanfavorite Opera Memphis will be back in February with the classic The Pirates of Penzance. Reflecting on my first year as Executive Director, I have learned much and have come to appreciate, first and foremost, the enlightened city leadership—including then-Mayor Charles Salvaggio—who were instrumental in the creation of GPAC. They envisioned a city that embraces the arts and understood the unique benefits the arts provide. Since then, hundreds of thousands

of people have come through our doors, and, since 2020, thousands more have gathered on the lawn in The Grove. This season, we anticipate continuing and growing that legacy, watching the old and the young, residents and visitors, come to a show and find that it soothes their soul, inspires a new idea, teaches them something or simply helps them feel connected to others. As we launch into Season 32, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the City of Germantown, whose support remains critical to our mission. From our early days and into the years under Mayors Goldsworthy and Palazzolo, City support has allowed GPAC to thrive as a vital cultural institution that has become a touchstone for our community’s shared pride and investment. My deepest thanks also go to our wise and devoted board of directors; mostly Germantown citizens, these leaders share a vision for stewarding a mature GPAC into a resilient and strong future. MAYOR’S LETTER Dear Friends of GPAC, A great city is measured by the strength of its infrastructure, the safety of its neighborhoods and the richness of its culture. Here in Germantown, we have always viewed the arts as a vital investment in our residents' quality of life. By fostering a community where creativity can thrive, we have built a proud tradition of bringing people together through shared cultural experiences. For generations, the Germantown Performing Arts Center has been our community's welcoming doorway to these performing arts. Through those doors, audiences have discovered extraordinary music, theater, dance and cultural experiences that have entertained, inspired and connected people from across Germantown and the region. The arts do more than fill seats or stages. They enrich our lives, encourage creativity, strengthen our sense of community and remind us that some of life's most meaningful moments are shared experiences. Supporting the arts is an investment in the character of our city and in the people who call Germantown home. That commitment continues with The Grove at GPAC, one of the accomplishments I am most proud to have helped bring to life. From the beginning, our vision was to create an outdoor venue where families, friends and neighbors could gather to enjoy outstanding performances in a beautiful setting. Today, that vision has become a reality.

The Grove has quickly become a beloved community destination. Concertgoers fill the lawn with blankets and lawn chairs, children dance to the music and visitors discover firsthand what makes Germantown such a special place. The enthusiastic response from our patrons has confirmed what we hoped from the very beginning: our community values opportunities to experience the performing arts together. What makes The Grove especially meaningful is that it extends the remarkable legacy of GPAC. Together, these venues welcome audiences in new ways while remaining true to the same mission of making the performing arts accessible, inviting and enriching for everyone. As we look to the future, I remain committed to supporting the arts as an essential part of the exceptional quality of life that defines Germantown. Since bursting onto the pop-culture landscape over a decade ago for his role in the cult-classic TV show Glee, Darren Criss has embodied the kind of kaleidoscopic artistry that’s entirely uninhibited by form or genre. Before Criss exploded into internet subculture as both an actor and songwriter for the viral YouTube hit A Very Potter Musical in 2009, he had made a small name for himself playing unique interpretations of popular songs in his hometown of San Francisco. Little did he know that his knack for covering tunes would serve him well in 2010, when he was cast on the massively successful series Glee, from which his renditions of popular songs led to several Billboard-topping records. In 2015, his songwriting landed an Emmy nomination for Best Original Music and Lyrics for the song “The Time,” which appeared in the show’s series finale. In 2018, his work in Ryan Murphy’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story received wide critical acclaim, earning him Primetime Emmy, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild, and Critics’ Choice Award wins. As a Broadway performer, Criss is a veteran 4

of the stage whose credits include the titular role in Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2015), How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (2012), and the 2022 revival of David Mamet’s seminal play American Buffalo alongside Laurence Fishburne and Sam Rockwell. This past May, Criss concluded his two-year run in the critically acclaimed Broadway musical Maybe Happy Ending, for which he won a Tony Award for Best Performance in a Leading Role in a Musical. This first Tony Award win for Criss is doubly monumental as the category’s first win by an Asian-American actor. Criss has continued to write and produce music extensively through the years, whether for his own releases as an artist or as a songwriter for theater, film, and television. In 2019, Criss created, executive produced, starred in, and provided all the original songs for his short-form musical comedy series Royalties. In 2022, he provided the music and lyrics for the opening number of the Tony Awards. In 2021, Criss delivered a genre-diverse collection of singles as part of his EP titled Masquerade and a full-length Christmas album which is aptly titled A Very Darren Crissmas.

LAKECIA BENJAMIN

Lakecia Benjamin is a six-time Grammynominated, New York-based saxophonist, arranger, composer, and educator whose masterful sound offers a unique meld of R&B, several strains of jazz, and funk. Her warm, resonant tone—often compared to that of Johnny Hodges—lends itself to any style she chooses to play. Born in New York City and raised in Manhattan’s predominantly Dominican Washington Heights neighborhood, Benjamin honed her skills at the Fiorello LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts and the renowned jazz program at New York’s New School University. Throughout her education and career, Benjamin has been a student and mentee of greats like Clark Terry, Terri Lyne Carrington, Billy Harper, Buster Williams, Reggie Workman, and Gary Bartz. The success of two of her most recent albums, Phoenix and Pursuance: The Coltranes, have positioned Benjamin among jazz’s most celebrated recording artists. In addition to absolute raves from outlets like The New York Times, The Guardian, and DownBeat, Phoenix earned Benjamin three Grammy nominations, an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Jazz Album, and the Alto Saxophonist of the Year title presented by the 6

prestigious Jazz Journalist Association. Given Benjamin’s personal story over the last few years, her concerts are nothing short of life-affirming. In 2021, she was involved in a car accident that resulted in more than one potentially career-ending injury. Among other wounds, Benjamin broke her jaw, shoulder blade, and ribs and ruptured an eardrum. Today, Benjamin has regained her confidence and physical strength, embraces whatever limitations her accident may have inflicted, and looks forward to many more decades of traveling and performing. In 2024, Benjamin released Phoenix Reimagined, a live-in-studio album which focuses on the music from her acclaimed Phoenix project and adds three new songs. With the spontaneous magic of a live LP, Phoenix Reimagined illustrates not only the vibrant togetherness between Benjamin and her live audiences but also the resilience and power behind this prolific powerhouse. Benjamin’s most recent album, We Dream, was released this year on June 5. In addition to recording, performing, and arranging, Benjamin is also an educator dedicated to mentoring the next generation of jazz musicians by teaching at Jazz at Lincoln Center and at Jazz House Kids.

Grim days call for fierce love. And Mavis Staples, one of the most enduring figures in American music, is laying it down. Now 87, Mavis has been performing since the age of eight. After starting out with her father Roebuck “Pops” Staples, sisters Cleotha and Yvonne, and brother Pervis in the Staple Singers more than 70 years ago, she’s the lone surviving member of the group, still carrying her family’s gifts and knowledge as a living heritage. Sad and Beautiful World is the fifteenth solo album from this national treasure and multigenerational talent. The record spans seven decades of the American Songbook—a range nearly as vast as Mavis’ career—and includes reinventions of timeless songs as well as original music. Inducted into several halls of fame (Blues, Rock, and Gospel), a Kennedy Center Honoree, and a winner of multiple Grammys (including a Lifetime Achievement Award), Mavis is our musical history. She’s collaborated with nearly every major figure of her era(s), from Dylan to Prince, Aretha, and Willie, not to mention countless stars from subsequent generations. Sad and Beautiful World includes collabo8

rations with artists who have become part of Mavis’ world, many of whom are legends in their own right. Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Tweedy, Derek Trucks, Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee), Hozier, MJ Lenderman, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), and others shine a light on her, while Mavis does what only she can do. Not only is Mavis still making studio albums, but she’s also still on the road, returning to venues like the Newport Folk Festival, where she’s been a fixture since 1964. Few people wield the combination of moral authority and musical artistry that Mavis possesses. The moral authority stems from her experiences during the Jim Crow era as a Black woman playing music in the South. The Staple Singers created the literal soundtrack for the 1965 march from Selma to Montgomery with their seminal album Freedom Highway and opened for Martin Luther King Jr. at his rallies. She may be one of the last true ones standing, but she’s not waiting around to be revered for the wisdom she brings. She’s too busy continuing to lead the charge, still showing us how it’s done by making music— and history—just when we need her most.

TERENCE BLANCHARD: MILES + COLTRANE CENTENNIAL SATURDAY NOV 7 8PM

Terence Blanchard has been a consistent artistic force for making powerful musical statements concerning painful American tragedies, past and present. A true Renaissance man, Blanchard stands tall as one of jazz’s most esteemed trumpeters and defies expectations by creating a spectrum of artistic pursuits. Boundarybreaking and genre-defying, Blanchard is recognized globally as a dazzling soloist and a prolific composer for film, television, opera, Broadway, orchestras, and his own ensembles. An eight-time Grammy winner, a twotime Emmy nominee, and a two-time Oscar nominee, Blanchard follows the legacy of the late, great Quincy Jones by becoming the second African-American composer to be nominated twice in the Original Score category at the Academy Awards. Blanchard is also heralded as a two-time opera composer whose Fire Shut Up in My Bones was the first opera by an African-American composer to premier at the Metropolitan Opera. Despite his wide-ranging talents, Blanchard’s beautiful, provocative, and inspiring jazz endeavors remain his center of gravity. Since launching his career in the 1990s, Blanchard has released 20 solo albums, and he performs regularly in multiple configurations. In 2024, he was named an official National Endowment for 10

the Arts Jazz Master and was awarded membership to the esteemed American Academy of Arts and Letters. Blanchard currently serves as the Executive Artistic Director for SF Jazz, the largest nonprofit jazz presenter in the world. 2026 marks the centennial birth years of the architects of progressive jazz, Miles Davis and John Coltrane, and Blanchard is celebrating with an exclusive new program, Terence Blanchard: Miles + Coltrane Centennial. With this exceptional program, Blanchard and his band, the E-Collective, bring personal, authentic connections to the music of Davis and Coltrane. Unlike standard tributes with faithful renditions, this centennial celebration emphasizes innovation and reinterpretation to embody and channel the spirit of improvisation and forward thinking that defined both icons. It all started with children’s games… Rooted in the groundbreaking improvisational games of Viola Spolin, The Second City opened its doors on a snowy Chicago night in December 1959, and a comedy revolution began. The small cabaret theater has grown to become the most influential and prolific comedy empire in the world, developing an entirely unique way of creating art and fostering generation after generation of superstars. GPAC'S PATRON OF THE ARTS AWARD The Patron of the Arts Award was created by the GPAC Board of Directors in 2010 to honor an individual or couple who have demonstrated exemplary support for the performing and visual arts. Given annually at the GPAC gala, the Patron of the Arts Award was designed by James Vanderpool, Foundry Operations Manager in the Metal Working Facilities at the National Ornamental Metal Museum. Made of cast bronze, the piece was inspired by the GPAC theater and all the artistry it presents. It includes a piece of the original pine stage, installed 30 years ago.

In this performance, Mary Frances will use her skills as a dance teacher and teaching artist with the Tennessee Arts Commission to incorporate movements appropriate for all ages and levels. With Paul on guitar, Mary Frances’ vocals, and their bandmates on bass and percussion, this fun and dynamic show will have you all up and dancing!

Complete with some of the biggest hats and belt buckles you've ever seen, this band holds true to classic country and western music while bringing their modern sensibilities and musical talents to these songs. Big Barton plays the roots of this American art form including artists such as Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Ernest Tubb, and Johnny Cash. Saddle up your horse and put on your boots for this two-steppin’ good time!

GPAC YOUTH GPAC dance classes are designed to offer high- SYMPHONY quality dance instruction in a non-competitive PROGRAM and nurturing environment for students ages 3-10. Dance Classes

Students develop rhythm, coordination, flexibility, creative expression, and self-esteem while learning dance techniques appropriate for their age. Our approach provides a joyful and engaging experience that boosts students’ confidence and nurtures the individual artistic personality of each child.

Adult Tap Class

SEP 8 - NOV 10 (NO CLASS OCT 13 & NOV 3) Tiptoe back into tap dance with a fun adult class designed to help movers brush up on basic tap steps, rhythms, and short combinations. Tap shoes or hard-sole shoes are recommended. Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 10:00 to 11:00 AM in the Watkins Studio Theater. Participate in the whole session or drop in on a class.

Guitar Lessons

GPAC offers private guitar lessons to students of all ages with singer-songwriter Josh Threlkeld. Through one-on-one sessions, students will sharpen techniques, learn compositions, and understand different musical genres.

Summer Arts Camp

GPAC offers opportunities for creative selfdiscovery through summer arts camps like Fairytale Ballet, Create and Animate, and Play That Guitar. The camps are designed to stimulate artistic talents while providing enjoyable and enriching experiences.

Master Classes & Workshops

Concerts SUNDAY NOV 15, 2026 4PM & SUNDAY APR 25, 2027 4PM Now in its 16th season, the GPAC Youth Symphony Program (GYSP) provides opportunities for young musicians across the Mid-South area to perform musical masterworks under the direction of experienced conductors and teachers, improve upon their technique, learn basic music theory, work with an ensemble, and interact with professional guest artists performing at GPAC. With four distinct ensembles, GYSP’s excellent music education fosters musical growth with an emphasis on the interconnectedness of art, music, culture, history, and society. Through this program, our students are equipped with the tools to become the next generation of music advocates, educators, performers, and patrons. Generous community support, individual donors, and volunteers make it possible for GPAC’s musical and educational programs to grow and flourish. There are many ways to take part in the life of GPAC. Explore the following opportunities and get involved.

GPAC ARTS EDUCATION FUND

GPAC enriches the community by providing educational programs that enhance access to, and appreciation for, the arts for people of all ages. We offer high-quality arts experiences and hands-on training to children, teens, and adults through programs such as dance classes, summer camps, the Youth Symphony Orchestra, Peanut Butter & Jam, visual art exhibits, guitar lessons, and the Creative Arts Ensemble. We also extend our reach offsite by providing free performances and master classes in schools, community centers, and universities in the area. The GPAC Arts Education Fund was created in 2016 to sustain these programs and fund new initiatives. THE GUILD

The Germantown Performing Arts Guild is an organization of women who share the common interest of promoting the arts in our community. Guild members offer their time, talents, and consistent support for the many varied activities at GPAC. In addition to supporting the arts, the Guild members also support the community; a favorite activity is an annual dinner, prepared by members, to recognize and honor our First Responders.
