I attended the White Station High School graduation ceremony last weekend. My stepson crossed the stage without incident, got his diploma, and is now ready to fly the nest, come September. He’s a great kid, a good student, and we’re very proud of him. (Not as proud as a few families, who, despite pleas from the principal to refrain from applause and demonstrations of enthusiasm, went nuts when their family member crossed the stage — signage, horns, etc. We opted for the restrained and tasteful, “Whoo!”)

The speeches by the valedictorian and salutatorian were sweet and touching, if somewhat predictable: “It seems like only yesterday, we were lowly freshmen, wandering the halls, lost and confused … .” Right. Give it a few decades, kid. It’ll still seem like yesterday. And you’ll still be lost and confused.

I’ve never given a graduation speech, but I have heard lots of them. Some were notable: Patriots Coach Bill Belichick gave the commencement speech at my son’s Wesleyan graduation. (I don’t think he said anything about always making sure your balls are properly inflated, but it was awhile back.) But most graduation speeches are pretty predictable. If I were ever to give one, I would keep it short, mainly because everybody just wants to go take pictures of their grad and get their mimosas on.

Life is precious and goes by quicker than you can imagine. Don’t risk losing yours because you want a thrill, e.g., jumping off a cliff with a parachute or putting street drugs in your body or standing on your head to chug a beer. Darwin was right. Nature winnows out the idiots. Don’t be one.

Love your family and friends. They are your refuge.

Avoid the herd mentality. Don’t be a blind follower or a pleaser. Learn to step back and assess situations and have the courage to say, “Nah. Y’all go ahead.”

Fail. If you’re not failing once in a while, you need to reassess your life and find something that challenges you. Everybody gets fired at some point. You’ll survive.

Find work that makes you happy, and don’t stop trying until you do. When you discover your purpose, everything else gets easier, including relationships. Some people spend their entire lives bitching about their job, instead of changing it. Or themselves. Don’t be that person.

In regards to public housing: While this system has assuredly had many problems in Memphis and throughout the country, affordable housing is a critical need for the most vulnerable of our population. As one example of the importance of public housing, low-income single mothers often use subsidized housing as a stepping stone to a better life as they are able to save more money and/or get additional training that leads to better employment opportunities.

When bundled with needed social support systems, HOPE VI (now Choice Neighborhoods) can work, but these safety nets are often absent in the aftermath of relocation. In the worst cases, relocated tenants end up homeless when they cannot keep up with utility bills that were formerly subsidized in public housing. The new mixed-income communities offer minimal affordable housing units, thereby essentially facilitating gentrification.

In regards to big-ticket development projects that have been the calling card under the Lipscomb’s direction, it is hardly time to declare victory in the use of this strategy. Before we hand him his gold watch, I think a balanced examination of Lipscomb’s record is needed.

Tennessee’s artsy-fartsy set and its tax-hating tea party set wound up, more or less, on the same side of an issue. You see, Tennessee has spent $46,000 for a new state logo. Now, when it comes to brand development, that’s really not much money to spend on a good logo. Then again, there’s nothing good about this.

The outrage was instant, and many fine things came about in the ensuing fracas. The Tennessee logo has its own parody Twitter account @TnLogo, of course.

But the very best thing to result from the logo outrage has to be Senator Brian Kelsey’s mirror selfie, which he took in support of a movement to preserve the state’s current logo. #Kelfie.

“With Memphis police, if we have any issues, we can do an open records request. But with a private company, they don’t have to tell us anything. They can keep us in the dark,” Foster said.

Pickard is pushing for body cameras for the Ambassador security officers, and Garrison said he’s working with Ambassador to correct the problems. Garrison agrees that body cameras would be a good idea.

Noura Jackson recently asked her attorney, “What do you mean? You can just talk to your car and not hold the phone?” She didn’t know until recently who Mike Conley is. She couldn’t believe the Memphis Grizzlies were bigger than the University of Memphis Tigers.

Jackson has been out of touch for nearly 10 years, incarcerated since she was 17.

Now 27, she’ll likely walk out of jail soon.

She was convicted in 2009 of the 2005 stabbing death of her mother, Jennifer Jackson.

That conviction was overturned by the Tennessee Supreme Court last year, which cited then-Assistant District Attorney Amy Weirich with suppression of evidence in the case and illegal statements in her closing argument against Jackson.

VC: [The trial tactic was]…we’ll trust that you won’t care whether she did it or not. You’ll dislike her so much, you’ll wish to punish her anyway. The Supreme Court said … that was a completely reprehensible trial tactic and the trial judge shouldn’t have permitted that evidence, and we will not permit it if there is a retrial.

FLYER: WHY DID YOU TAKE THIS CASE?

WHAT WAS NOURA’S RESPONSE TO THE PLEA DEAL?

Valerie Corder: What was compelling to me was that you have a child born and raised in our community, who was simply abandoned by the structure of the community that should have been supporting her.

Michael Working: There’s really a shift in the law about some very basic principles about our country and our justice system at issue here. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know Noura over this case, and I really like Noura a lot. … But the case was bigger than Noura.

DO YOU THINK SHE COMMITTED THE CRIME?

VC: There is no physical evidence that she was in any way involved. Quite the contrary, the physical evidence establishes that somebody else entirely separate and different from her was involved.

MW: There was a complete willingness to ignore the science, to ignore the real

VC: Her first comment was, “But they’re never going to try and find who really killed my mother.” In her childlike mind, she believed if she was acquitted at another trial, they’ll have to actually investigate this from the point of view of “Let’s see what the evidence says.” That was the bigger hurdle than, “You mean I can get out of here and have a bath and scratch a dog’s belly tomorrow?”

WHAT WILL NOURA DO NOW?

MW: Going forward, I think she wants to lead a really simple life out of the public eye. I think she probably does want to do some things in terms of prison reform.

VC: Re-entry is an issue for anyone, but when you are in your formative years of being a teenager when you are institutionalized and that institutionalization lasts for 10 years, you do not develop normally. So, how do you set aside that 10-year deprivation and walk back out into the world?

Allan Gilbreath has opened a new geek-themed art gallery at 546 South Main in the South Main Arts District.

IONS Geek Gallery celebrated its soft opening on May 16th, but the opening celebration will continue until the South Main Trolley Night on May 29th, the official grand opening.

Gilbreath is one of the hosts of Geek Tank on WREC 600-AM and a managing editor at fantasy and science fiction publisher Dark Oak Press. He’s heavily involved in the local theme convention scene. He assists with MidSouthCon and Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention yearly, and he will be hosting the Memphis Comic Convention this August. Convention organizers have been encouraging the development of IONS due to the limited local venues for geeky art.

“At the conventions, you get to run into a lot of writers, artists, sculptors, and actors,” Gilbreath said.

“Basically, the only place you can find true contemporary art is at these conventions. So people who like elves, fairies, and dwarves are stuck with lowquality posters and calendars, or you happen to know the convention circuit and you can go meet [artists] like Dean Zackary or Mitch Foust.”

The issue with this, according to Gilbreath, is that once a convention is over, the featured artists take their creations and leave, and collectors don’t have another chance to purchase the artists’ works until the next yearly convention. Now, he said, there will be a place for contemporary artists to show their work throughout the year.

“Memphis has had a science fiction convention in [town] for more than 30 years,” Gilbreath said. “And most people don’t know that. Memphis actually now has five or six genre conventions, and most people don’t know that [either].

So, we were like, ‘Well, perhaps it’s time to bring this to the brick-and-mortar world.’”

When it came to finding a place to open the new gallery, Gilbreath and his team looked at Broad Avenue and Overton Square before settling down in the South Main district in a building constructed in 1910.

“The people we met down on South Main were probably the biggest cheerleaders of getting our type of facility down there. We had such a tremendous response from [people] in the downtown area. We received a lot of

The second-floor classroom at Douglass K-8 Optional School was so quiet, you could hear chess pieces slide across the board. Pairs of students were bent over chessboards, their eyes flitting across the squares as their teacher, Jeff Bulington, leaned back in his chair.

He called out moves and the students shifted their pieces to match the directions, which to me sounded like another language. But these students, most of them girls, are fluent in chess and they have the record to prove it.

Last month, Bulington took two girls’ teams to the 12th Annual Kasparov Chess Foundation All-Girls National Chess Championships in Chicago.

Shimera Paxton, Aleha Cole, Marley Fabijanic, and Teiraney L. Biggs came in an impressive second place in the under-14 division. In the under-16 division, the team of Jerrica Randle, Christy Thomas and Jasmine Thomas also took second place.

Marley and Shimera both won a spot to compete at the Susan Polgar national tournament at St. Louis’ Webster University in July, Bulington said.

Bulington is clearly very proud of his students, who come from the middle school and the high school, which is next door. But he’s not effusive and perhaps following his lead, neither are they. I congratulate them and they smile politely.

It’s as if they’re thinking: Of course, we did well at the competition. That’s what we do.

This self-assuredness and confidence isn’t in any formal curriculum, but it’s invaluable.

In his 18th-century essay, “Morals of Chess,” Benjamin Franklin remarked that “we learn by chess the habit of not being discouraged by present appearances in the state of our affairs, the habit of hoping for a favourable change, and that of persevering in the search of resources.

“The game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement. Several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired or strengthened by it, so as to become habits, ready on all occasions.”

In a valiant but ultimately futile attempt to teach me, Marley and Christy face off.

I asked the girls how much each piece is worth. They hesitated. “It depends,” Marley replied. “A king could be worth five points, but if it’s not in a good spot, it’s not worth as much.”

“The position,” Christy concluded, “af-

fects the value of the piece.”

In chess, that seems fair. In life, not so much.

How do these girls’ positions affect what society thinks they’re worth?

Geographically, they’re situated in North Memphis, firmly inside the Cshaped sea of poverty that cups downtown, North, and South Memphis. These are not neighborhoods from which residents have many obvious options — for employment, grocery stores, or shopping.

If you had to calculate their civic value simply by the amount of public investment here, you’d say they weren’t worth much.

However as public school students, they’re priceless to companies like Pearson (and its shareholders), which can make millions off them as test takers.

This emphasis on high-stakes testing produces students who may be able to parrot back what they were taught, but it doesn’t produce thinkers who ask if we’re asking the right questions.

What happens under Bulington’s instruction is different from traditional education, where the knowledge is passed from the teacher down to the students.

Here, students are engaged in the production and creation of knowledge, as they teach each other, he explained.

Girls are typically marginalized in the chess world, but not here.

Then there’s the opportunity to travel to tournaments, to try different foods they wouldn’t have at home, to stay in hotels — even what it’s like to fly on a plane, as the team did for the first time on their last trip to Chicago.

Bulington, who was also a chess coach at Lester Elementary, hasn’t taught these students long enough to know whether chess will boost their TCAP scores, but he has his own data.

Take Aleha, for example. She’s a relatively newcomer to chess, who joined the team after a stint playing violin in the orchestra. Bulington opened his laptop and showed me a chart that tracked her chess performance over the past year.

I note that the fever line tilts up at an angle that would make any investor’s mouth water.

“These,” says Bulington, “are my investments.”

Memorial Time The past week, properly enough, has been one of official memorials for the military veterans who have made the supreme sacrifice for their country, and — in this corner, anyhow — has also been a time to remember others who have left us or suffered significant harm on some other kind of firing line.

It was, for example, inspiring to see former journalist and current FedEx customer service specialist Oran Quintrell out and in public and appearing to be of good spirit at the annual Bratfest sponsored by various of his fellow Democratic activists in southeast Memphis on Memorial Day. It was the first outing for Quintrell, a victim of diabetes, since the amputation of his lower legs and his fitting for prosthetic substitutes.

It would be overdoing it to say that Quintrell was jaunty, but both he and his wife, Joyce, were satisfyingly whole and back to normal in any number of impressive ways, and gave every indication that they will be on hand to add their good cheer and stimulating company in all kinds of social situations to come.

Quintrell’s disease and rehab regimen have served as a “wake-up call,” observed his longtime friend Steve Steffens, a co-host for the Bratfest affair.

Diabetes has been much in the news of late. It was given as the proximate cause of death for the legendary B.B. King, who has been the subject of several memorials since his death last week in Las Vegas and was to be honored with yet another on Beale Street on Wednesday of this week.

And it was the focus of attention at the recent fund-raising banquet of the West Tennessee chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Held at the East Memphis Hilton on May 9th, the event was co-hosted by honorary Chairman David Pickler, the former longtime Shelby County Schools president, whose company, the Pickler Wealth Advisers, is an annual sponsor of the event and whose daughter, Katie Pickler, is chief development officer of the West Tennessee chapter. Emcee for the JDRF banquet was Darrell Greene, news anchor for WHBQ-TV, Fox 13.

Speaking of “satisfyingly whole” and “of good cheer,” it is hard to imagine anybody more suggestive of those phrases than Greene, a former star athlete during his student days in Arkansas and the very embodiment of public good health. Yet Darrell is one of the many victims of juvenile diabetes. After being diagnosed at the age of 24, he has had to submit to the same daily insulin regimen as other JD1 sufferers, a treatment routine that is necessary to sustain normal life, or, in some cases, life itself.

• As this is a column largely devoted to memory and memorials, I will take the opportunity to express some overdue condolences — to Adrienne PakisGillon, a former candidate for the state Senate and a Democratic activist, for the death of her father, Jim Pakis, and to Susan and George Simmons, activists also, for the death of their son Forest, whose extraordinary good nature so clearly derived from that of his parents.

Even more overdue: condolences to the survivors of Shirley Boatright, a tireless campaign worker and strategist for all sorts of candidates and public figures, across all kinds of ideological lines, who died back in December 2013.

This list of overlooked remembrances is by no means complete and will be added to in the course of time.

Type 2, which accounts for most known cases, is more usually attributed to specific developmental circumstances, like obesity or overuse of sugar. Both kinds of diabetes involve impairment of the body’s metabolism and ability to process blood sugar and are threatening to life and limb.

Last week also presented three occasions for friends to remember former state legislator and women’s rights activist Kathryn Bowers — memorial services at St. Paul Catholic Church on Friday (where video clips from her time in public life were shown), followed by a funeral mass there on Saturday and burial on Tuesday at Calvary Cemetery.

Bowers’ observances occurred on the same weekend as events in Memphis connected with the annual convention here of the Tennessee Federation of Democratic Women, an organization in which she had often figured large.

Bowers, a longtime member of the Democratic leadership in the House, was well-liked and respected across party lines despite the fact of her arrest in 2005 (almost 10 years ago, exactly), along with several other legislators, in the FBI’s Tennessee Waltz sting. Bowers’ arrest occurred only days after she was sworn in as a state senator after winning a special election to fill a vacancy.

After serving a brief prison term for bribery, Bowers devoted much of her time in recent years to charitable activity and to voter registration drives.

Against the backdrop of the Mid-South Coliseum, veteran wrestlers Jerry Lawler and Bill Dundee were cheered after whipping a passel of villains at Saturday’s “Roundhouse Revival.”

And that message was: Rumors of the Coliseum’s uselessness have been greatly exaggerated. Discussed at the event, intermittently with music and even some ’rassling featuring Jerry Lawler and Bill Dundee versus some certified bad guys, were a number of proposals, including one for a wrestling museum, which would allow the Coliseum to be rehabbed and retrofitted for new life.

Among the political figures observed there, either as spectators or as participants, were City Councilman (and mayoral candidate) Jim Strickland, City Council candidate Chooch Pickard, and County Commissioner Steve Basar.

This, too, is an incomplete list.

Saino, whom we made the subject of a Flyer profile some years ago, keeps a close eye on how taxpayer money gets spent, and he is generous about sharing his research, which almost always runs to the ways that we (and that “we” is our governments) are spending — or have committed to spend — too much, without taking the necessary steps to properly fund our liabilities.

Saino is much like Tennessee’s junior U.S. senator, Bob Corker, in that he not only frets about public spending, he itemizes his anxieties and, as often as not, proposes solutions that are equally itemized. And, further like the senator, who most recently vented his concerns about overspending at the national level at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Memphis two weekends ago, Saino sees himself as a voice in the wilderness, a prophet of sorts who isn’t being sufficiently listened to.

The initials OPEB (“other postemployment benefits”) are a familiar element of the public dialogue these days, and Saino, as much as anybody, is responsible for raising public awareness about them. In essence, OPEBs — which include such benefits to retirees as life insurance, health care, and disability payments — were at the root of some painful budget decisions made in city government over the past couple of years (and will figure significantly in this year’s city elections). And they have now come front and center in discussions concerning the budget of Shelby County government for the fiscal year 2015-16.

County government bears the brunt of expenditures for local public

education, and Shelby County Schools (SCS) has just presented the county a bill for a $14.9 million budget increase that has to do — largely or at least significantly — with the OPEB matter.

At least, that’s the opinion of Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, who saw fit to scold the SCS administration for ignoring the need to limit OPEB expenses while county government, voluntarily, and Memphis city government, more or less involuntarily but realistically, had been dealing with the issue in recent years. Luttrell went so far as to advise SCS, “Maybe you need to look at layoffs.”

In budget committee meetings last week, the Shelby County Commission provisionally agreed to adopt an administration plan that cut the SCS request in half, but that won’t be set in stone until the next public commission meeting of June 1st, if at all. And if it does get final commission approval, the SCS board and administration will have little choice but to make some difficult decisions of their own. A day after the commission reached its preliminary conclusions, an SCS board meeting on Thursday took up the OPEB matter but reached no firm conclusions about what to do.

Should SCS join an ongoing suit by the Chattanooga school system against state underfunding to localities of BEP (Basic Education Program) funds? Of course, it should. But that’s long-term.

Hopefully, school officials can reach a Solomonic decision on OPEB cuts by themselves — before June 1st, if possible; before July 1st, by necessity.

These days, it’s important to look at a variety of news and information sources, because each source has its own agenda. You can’t just watch FOX News or CNBC or even just source your information from The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. You can’t always be that guy who says, “I was listening to NPR and they said …” Our information sourcing should be vetted, just like our friends and relationships.

Teach your children, encourage them, challenge them to share something newsworthy with you. Kardashians and Game of Thrones updates and scandals don’t count.

Remind them that their phones and tablets aren’t just for social media and gaming. All the time they spend on Facebook, Snapchat, or Twitter could be better spent looking at a news site and learning about something, something that they could even discuss at the dinner table.

It’s a two-way street. We need this generation to make sense of what’s going on. The mistakes of history don’t have to repeat themselves, if we’re all paying attention.

People have been saying that we are living in the information age for some time now. We are bombarded by the media with every possible type of story imaginable — international and domestic politics, economics, sports, human interest, and entertainment. I know I’m just scratching the surface.

News and information is all around us, so are the devices to access it: our phones, tablets, phablets, televisions, radios, etc. Oh yeah, now even our watches.

I’m an educator these days at a university here in town. The class I teach is a senior-level offering. The students are bright, engaged, and ready to complete their undergraduate work and get on with the next phase of their education or their professional lives.

The generation we call millennials are absolute masters of the communication devices I mentioned earlier. Most of my colleagues, friends, and I go to our children or other young people to ask for tech support on our personal devices. They’ve been using them since a very early age, so the logic is second nature to them.

Since this generation understands the operating systems of the devices that bring us all of our information and news, one might assume that they would be in tune with what’s happening in our country and elsewhere on Planet Earth.

You would be wrong.

Here is what I have observed in classrooms, living rooms, restaurants, and around dining room tables: Young adults are not in tune with current events. They don’t care and, unless pressed, don’t see a good reason to invest the time and energy to become informed.

I don’t teach sociology, so I can’t really explain why this is the case. I can only share what I observe. I am sure there are exceptions. Maybe your child and their friends are just that.

The millennials at large are not without hope; that’s not the “why.” They are community-minded, so perhaps it all seems so macro to them that they choose to think micro. I do know that when I challenged my students to bring a news story to class to discuss (adding that Bruce Jenner’s transformation doesn’t count), they would almost always come to class empty-handed or throw out topics that were so broad that I could tell no pre-work had been done.

Here’s the concern: In 10, perhaps 15 years, this generation is going to be running things, making decisions that will have macro impact. There is so much to learn from the events of the day. Being

After 39 years, the Memphis in May Sunset Symphony ends with a bang, not a whimper.

The weather was perfect. The crowd that descended on Tom Lee Park for the lastever Sunset Symphony was enormous.

And they say that the fireworks display that closed this year’s Memphis In May (MIM) festival was the largest pyrotechnic show the city has ever witnessed.

That last bit may very well be true, but as impressive as the fireworks were, the night’s biggest bang wasn’t launched from a cannon set up behind the stage. It was delivered by conductor Mei-Ann Chen and the musicians of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra (MSO), who tore through a diverse selection of patriotic anthems, popular favorites, and classical crowd pleasers, pulling out the stops at every turn.

Earlier this year, Memphis In May President and CEO Jim Holt announced that the Sunset Symphony, a festival tradition since 1977, was being discontinued. The concert, he said, had reached the end of its natural life span and would be replaced by a new, more participatory event that won’t be announced until sometime in the first quarter of 2016.

So, for their 39th, and possibly final riverside concert for Memphis In May, the MSO packed the park front to back and gave the diverse and multigenerational crowd a generous taste of what they’ll be missing in the years to come.

“For me, this kind of program isn’t just about the kinds of things we love as lovers of classical music,” Chen said, explaining her method for selecting the appropriate sunset material. Chen has proven to be an especially thoughtful music director, who worked with Memphis In May to develop a nostalgic program that satisfied expectations, while still leaving room for some surprises.

“It’s about the community and creating a memorable concert experience for the widest audience we ever reach. It’s about creating that rich communal experience and doing whatever it takes,” Chen added.

In this case, Chen thought the appropriate communal listening experience required a healthy mix of familiar classical works, like Rossini’s “William Tell Overture,” some of the more romantic passages from Bizet’s Carmen, and three selections from Prokofiev’s Romeo & Juliet. The last Sunset Symphony also saw the return of popular favorites such as “Old Man River” and George Gershwin’s “Summertime,” as sung by Memphisbased soprano Kallen Esperian. Even piano-pounding Senator Lamar Alexander, who wowed MIM crowds back in 2008, showed up to play a medley of Memphis songs backed by the MSO. “I’m here because I play piano just a little bit better than other senators continued on page 18

and governors,” Alexander quipped modestly, as he sat down to the keyboard, name-checking the recently deceased B.B. King and reminding Memphis of the tremendous cultural gifts the city has given the world.

Not only was this year’s concert the last Sunset Symphony, it also marked the first and only time that Chen, a dynamic rising star in the world of classical music, has conducted at the event. “I did make it clear to [Memphis In May] that I would like to do at least one Sunset Symphony before I wrapped up my tenure,” Chen said, explaining that she

often books guest conductor gigs several years in advance, and May is a popular month for scheduling concerts.

“We didn’t know at the time this was scheduled that this concert was also going to be the sunset for the Sunset Symphony. But I am so honored and grateful that, at least, I get to close the door. It’s such an honor to be on the podium for such an important, historic event, even though it’s bittersweet.”

The event was more bitter than sweet, in some regards. In February of this year, Chen, a highly sought after guest artist with an explosive and theatrically charged conducting style, announced that she would also be leaving the MSO when her contract ends in 2016. “But

Memphis will always be home,” Chen said. “I will always come back.

“And I want to also let people know,” she said, “that even though the Sunset Symphony is ending, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra is always going to be here serving our community through incredible concerts.

“We’ve got so many talented musicians, and they are indispensable assets to our community. That’s why I also wanted to build into this [concert] music that would showcase the musicians before I wrap up my tenure here.”

The MSO’s CEO Roland Valliere has only lived in Memphis for 18 months or so, but he has a strong sense for what the event has meant to the city and faith

that the MSO will find newer and better ways to connect to the community.

“The Sunset Symphony has been a signature event for the orchestra for a period of time,” he says. “It has been an opportunity for the orchestra to reach a broad segment of the community, and it’s something the community greatly enjoys,” Valliere said.

For many Memphians, he added, the Sunset Symphony and the Memphis Symphony Orchestra have become synonymous. “We’re exploring other possibilities, having active conversations about what might happen next, but we’re not prepared to announce anything definitive as of yet. Still, we are optimistic and encouraged about the future of this

The Sunset Symphony has always had a patriotic edge, coming as it usually does on Memorial Day weekend. From the roar of retired war planes in the traditional airshow to the rousing strains of a John Philip Sousa march to usher in the closing fireworks, it has remained an old-fashioned community picnic.

Until he retired in 1998, bassbaritone James Hyter entertained the Sunset Symphony’s diverse crowds with multiple encores of “Old Man River,” the Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein classic contrasting the hard life of African Americans with the slow-moving Mississippi River’s endless ambivalence.

“You take the high note, and I’ll take the low note,” he’d say, encouraging the audience to sing along.

The song was powerfully revived by baritone Richard Todd Payne, who, like Hyter before him, was brought back for repeat performances.

“After ‘Old Man River,’ nothing can follow that,” Chen said. Nothing except for a reprise of “Glory,” the recent Golden Globe-winning theme song to the civil rights film Selma. The MSO, which had performed “Glory” in April at the National Civil Rights Museum with rapper Al Kapone, made the protest song its parting shot, prior to the “1812 Overture.”

“Resistance is us,” Kapone chanted,

in what may have been the most socially relevant moment in the history of the traditionally conservative Sunset Symphony. “That’s why Rosa sat on the bus. That’s why we walk through Ferguson with our hands up.” Like Payne before them, Kapone and baritone Donald O’Connor were brought back for an encore.

Then, as it has for 39 years, the Sunset Symphony ended with the “1812 Overture” and “Stars and Stripes Forever,” while fireworks lit up the night.

Then it ended it for good. The music faded, the trucks selling funnel cakes rolled away, the families milled back to their cars. But old man river just kept rolling along.

Although the MSO has depleted its modest endowment and continues to struggle financially, Valliere has good reasons to be optimistic.

“A year ago, the orchestra was faced with some significant challenges, but we have made remarkable progress,” he said, while allowing that the musicians have taken steep pay cuts and were “extraordinarily impacted” by changes as the organization shifted into austerity mode.

“But the community has really responded,” Valliere said. “Now we have some cash and some time. So we’re in a much better place than we were a year ago. We’re not out of the woods, but

“I never really think of Canada as being a different country,” says Memphis actor and activist Carly Crawford. “I mean, I know it’s a different country, but we’re sort of the same, right?” The distinctions were driven home while visiting Buddies in Bad Times, the world’s oldest and largest professional company devoted exclusively to developing work that reflects the life and experiences of the LGBT community. Crawford recalls taking da walking tour of Toronto’s gay village when girls in her group asked what the gay village in Memphis was like. “We don’t have one of those,” she responded.

Crawford, who recently founded Q&A, an open and accepting queer youth theater group, says it can be lonely doing this kind of work in the South. There is a similar company in New Orleans and one in Lexington, Kentucky, but most of the theaters working with gay youth are concentrated in California and New England. “It can be pretty geographically isolating,” she says.

Crawford isn’t all alone in this endeavor, however. Q&A was created under the umbrella of Playhouse on the Square and is affiliated with the North American Pride Youth Theatre Alliance, which includes 24 theaters and Buddies in Bad Times in Canada. This week, Crawford hopes to raise her company’s profile and discover new friends and allies when Q&A opens its first play, Queerly Ever After, an all-original show that puts an LGBT spin on classic fairy tales.

“Fairy tales are great to work with,” Crawford says of the source material. “It’s so easy to turn them on their heads.” In this case, Queerly Ever After finds Cinderella trying on labels instead of shoes to see which one fits. Rapunzel is imagined as a lesbian locked away by her disapproving mother. And so it goes.

Although there’s no bad language and the situations aren’t too adult, Crawford recommends the show only to adults and children over 14. “Unless you don’t mind having conversations with your kids about what asexuality or pansexuality are,” she says.

Jun Kaneko’s ceramic work is epic, mysterious, and colorful.

Though his surfaces undulate organically, from even a slight distance they appear to be a smooth canvas for the artist’s abstract painting. His work also tends to be enormous, and he arranges it in a way where the works create an environment and converse.

Kaneko, who is coming to Memphis to speak at the opening of a show at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, is probably best known for his “dangos.” In Japan, the word means dumpling, although the rounded cylinders, which are often painted with primitive-looking marls, look more like something you might expect to find on Easter Island among the moai. And, speaking of Easter Island’s moai sculptures, Kaneko is also known for sculpting enormous ceramic heads and painting them in ways that call to mind 1960s-era op-art.

After graduating from high school in Japan, Kaneko, who had been studying painting and printmaking, decided to attend art school in America. He felt that the Japanese system was too strict and too rigid. And so he left his family to study in California, where he became fast friends with groundbreaking ceramicist Jerry Rothman, who was anything but strict and rigid. Rothman, who had a studio in Long Beach, was part of a rebellious clique of ceramic artists, moving the form far away from its decorative roots. The highly regarded and influential sculptor gave Kaneko a cot in his studio and clay to experiment with new forms. Immediately, Kaneko began transforming a sculptural material into canvases to paint, and two works from that first summer with Rothman were accepted into the 1964 Syracuse ceramics competition.

Art enthusiasts interested in hearing Kaneko discuss the evolution of his process and walking among the dangos and floating heads may do so this week. On Thursday, May 28th, at 5:30 p.m., the artist will present a slideshow and lecture.

The exhibit is on display through November 22nd.

Memphis Flyer: When did you first start recording bands at home?

Keith Cooper: Every time I would try to record in a studio there just wasn’t a sound that captured what I wanted, so I started looking into tape machines and analog recording. I bought a reel and didn’t know how to use it for a long time, but then I got a mixer and when the Sheiks started getting rolling I got more serious about recording the bands I was in. I started talking to [local recording engineer] Andew McCalla because I knew he recorded bands, and he helped me out a lot in the beginning. This was all when I lived at my parents’ house.

Mostly we were just testing out different recording ideas, turning knobs and figuring out sounds.

We recorded the first Sheiks single at my parents’ house, and we’d be messing around until 4 a.m.

before eventually my dad would come up and tell us to chill out.

When I moved into the “Burgundy Ballroom” I figured out how to make more weird psychedelic noises, and Chris Owen from Time asked if I would record his first album. That was my first hired job. There were some accidents during that recording session, but it had a human quality to it and Chris was really happy with the way it turned out.

When did you move into this new spot and how many different recording sessions have you worked on since moving in?

Since I’ve been recording at this new place, I’ve mostly been working with Jack Oblivian on his new album. I’ve also worked with Time, Aquarian Blood, Nots, Chickasaw Mound, Blackberries, plus all of my projects.

A lot of the equipment at your recording studio was either donated or loaned to you. Where did it all come from?

Andrew [McCalla] and I spent two days setting up the room, and Jack [Oblivian] brought over his tape machine and his drum set from when he was in the Compulsive Gamblers, and that’s when it became a real studio.

I also got a lot of equipment from Kelley Anderson from Those Darlins.

he latest crop of local garage rock bands to grace the stages of places like Murphy’s and the Buccaneer is turning to a house behind the Kroger on Union Avenue to preserve their songs. Since moving in last August, Keith Cooper has offered his services to up-and-coming Memphis bands like Nots, Time, and Chickasaw Mound. Working under the moniker “Burgundy Sound,” Cooper offers a live-recording environment in his living room, where songs get cut in one take and trial and smudges on the recording tape are considered psychedelic blessings. We caught up with the man behind the last three Goner Records releases to find out more about his home studio, his history of home recording, and what the people he shares a driveway with think of their new neighbor.

M U S I C F E AT U R E She had so much cool stuff, but when she moved to Memphis she couldn’t use any of it in her apartment, so she just unloaded all of this cool gear on me. She gave me a lot of tube pre-amps and a compressor, which is helping me keep this place strictly analog. Kelley’s also been coming over and showing me how to transfer things digitally, because that’s always been the chink in the chain for me. She’s been helping me get stuff completely ready to be mastered.

Because a lot of the recording equipment was donated, it seems like a co-op space to a certain extent. Does it have that kind of vibe?

I want it to be a relaxed, creative environment. At the same time, it is my house and I’d like to eventually soundproof this place. My neighbors don’t seem to mind, they like seeing the freaks roll in and play music. I guess it does have a loose co-op vibe.

What are you working on right now?

We’ve been finishing up the latest Jack Oblivian album I’m pretty sure he’s done with it now and it’s been sent over to Hi-Low. Every song on his new album, besides a couple, were recorded at my house. Blackberries are coming back over, and Naan Violence might come over and get some stuff done.

Would you like to see your studio eventually move into a building other than your home?

That thought has crossed my mind, and that would be cool if this becomes something that big. The thing about living at home is that there are time constraints, so I definitely wouldn’t be against moving into a real space. On the other hand, I really like having all this stuff at my disposal when it comes to practicing and jamming. There are a lot of times when you’re in the zone and then later you’re like, “Wait, what the hell was I playing,” but that moment is gone forever. Being able to hit record whenever I want helps preserve ideas and late-night jams.

With all the new bands cropping up around town right now, how busy are you with recording? Is there a limit or rules to the types of bands you work with?

Mostly I’ve been recording garage and punk bands because those types of bands seem to be the most comfortable with doing live, in-the-moment stuff.

I try to make that option available to them, but I would definitely be interested in working with other types of bands. I’ve always told people that if they have something good to cut, bring it on. It’s really fun to preserve all this stuff going on right now, ya know? It’s going to be on tape forever.

THIS WEEKEND AT THE LEVITT SHELL Things are heating up at the Levitt Shell this weekend, with four shows taking place between Thursday the 28th and Sunday the 31st. Hurray for the Riff Raff kick things off Thursday night, bringing the critically acclaimed folk rock of Alynda Lee Segarra (pictured) to the Overton Park stage. Originally from New York City but now based in New Orleans, Segarra cites everything from political poetry to the punk scene on the Lower East Side as inspiration for her brand of socially aware music. Segarra’s trip to Memphis is in the middle of a full U.S. tour that features a plethora of up-and-coming openers, including Brooklyn artist Juan Wauters on select dates.

The AJ Ghent Band keep things moving on Friday night with some legendary lap-steel guitar shredding from Ghent and company. Ghent comes from a long line of world-renowned lap-steel guitar players, and his grandfather Henry Nelson created the lap-steel sound known as “sacred steele,” a genre kept alive today by guitarists like Robert Randolph. Ghent cut his teeth playing with the Col. Hampton Band and also jammed with the Zac Brown Band before releasing his debut album Live at Terminal West earlier this year.

Saturday night brings New Orleans trombonist Glen David Andrews to the Shell, an artist who’s been riding the wave of good press since releasing Redemption last spring. If you’re in the mood for a history lesson on New Orleans music, don’t miss Andrews perform Saturday evening. Blues singer Earl Thomas closes things out on Sunday, an artist who has played with Ike Turner and written songs for Etta James. Thomas has been in the game for a while now, and has been called one of the best blues singers in the world, which makes him an excellent closer for a weekend that showcases unique Southern songwriters. — Chris Shaw All shows at the Levitt Shell this weekend start at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.

Big Mac Move over, pimento cheese, macaroni and cheese is taking over local menus.

S

omeone at Local Gastropub is a serious macaroni and cheese fan. Not only do they have Mac n’ Gruyere Tots ($9) on the menu, they just added an entire Mac ‘n’ Cheese Bar. Let’s start with the tots. There are eight deep-fried and perfectly crispy balls to an order. They actually resemble hushpuppies more than tater tots. There’s a little shaved Gruyere melted on top and a side of spicy marinara sauce. Inside the tot is where the magic happens. The macaroni and cheese is positively gooey and delicious. Assuming you don’t pop the entire tot in your mouth, each bite leaves a nice string of melted cheese like a good slice of pizza. They taste pretty darn good on their own, but the marinara definitely takes them to the next level. So, to review: crispy, gooey, cheesy, saucy, yum!

Now about that Mac ‘n’ Cheese Bar.

Their truffled mac ‘n’ cheese ($8) is the base. Then you have a number of toppings to add for an additional cost: lobster ($6), chorizo ($2), bacon ($2), short rib ($4), tasso ($3), and blue cheese ($2). I don’t think you can go wrong with this list of toppings, only right. The extra cheesy mac ‘n’ cheese comes out in a skillet, the size of which depends on the number of toppings added. Rather than the standard elbow, the Mac ‘n’ Cheese Bar features a long corkscrew noodle which has many aliases (cavatappi, cellentani, amori, spirali, tortiglioni, and fusilli rigati). I added short ribs to my order and the result was decadent and beyond delicious. It took restraint to only add one topping. There is clearly potential here to eat the most amazing, not to mention expensive, mac ‘n’ cheese of your life.

The newly opened Skybox Grill & Bar in Collierville features macaroni & cheese eggrolls ($8) as an appetizer. Macaroni and cheese EGGROLLS! If that’s not

worth the trip east, I don’t know what is.

They are everything I’d hoped they’d be and more. There are two large eggrolls to an order and they come sliced diagonally so there are actually four pieces. (I guess this means they want you to share, which just seems wrong.) The cut allows you to see the curly goodness inside and they are a sight to behold. They aren’t too cheesy and they also feature a longer corkscrew noodle rather than the standard elbow.

The eggroll wrapper is super crispy, but in a flaky pie-crust way. These, too, taste great on their own, but it’s hard to resist the tangy dipping sauces that accompany them. There’s a zesty barbecue and a sweet & spicy “sirachi” sauce. Both get the thumbs up. Go on, drive to Collierville.

Finally, true mac ‘n’ cheese fans must try the Mac-N-Cheeseburger ($9.95) at LBOE. Like all burgers at LBOE, it features a lovely square ciabatta bun that is perfectly toasted and a nice, big neverfrozen ground beef patty. On top of the

meat is a nice scoop of homemade mac ‘n’ cheese with a nice helping of crumbled hardwood bacon. The mac ‘n’ cheese stays together pretty well. I only had one or two elbows try and escape while eating it. Think of this combination as a deconstructed Hamburger Helper. The flavors are very familiar but elevated. After a few bites it seems perfectly normal to eat a hamburger topped with mac ‘n’ cheese.

In fact, one must wonder why no one thought of it sooner.

The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be Tomorrowland blurs the line between branding and ideology.

s we left a screening of Tomorrowland, my wife heard a mother ask her young daughter how she liked the movie.

“Well, while I was watching it, I kept thinking, ‘Is this a commercial, or is this a movie?’” the child said.

Disney’s $190 million exercise in corporate image makeover doesn’t want you to ask that question. The entertainment conglomerate had a big hole in its theme park properties called Tomorrowland, a relic of the time before everything in Disneyland had to tie in with a specific film. Conceived in the 1950s, Tomorrowland’s branding has devolved from the whiz-bang jetpack wonder world of Buck Rogers serials to kitchy retrofuturism. But Tomorrowland has Space Mountain, the Mona Lisa of roller coasters, so they couldn’t just bulldoze it and start over with something more relevant to today’s audiences, like say, Corporate Dystopia Land or Mad Max Radioactive Waste Land. So they hired some talent, in the form of Brad Bird, a Simpsons veteran with a spotless directorial filmography including The Incredibles and The Iron Giant; and George Clooney, World’s Most Interesting Man, for the grand rebranding.

When Clooney first appears as super genius inventor Frank Walker, he’s in pitchman mode. His attempts to introduce the story are interrupted by precocious teenager Casey Newton (Britt Robertson), who won’t let him finish a sentence. Eventually, he tells us of the time he took his homemade jetpack to enter the Inventor’s Competition at the 1964 World’s Fair.

He didn’t win, but he caught the attention of

Athena (Raffey Cassidy), a prim young British girl who is tagging along with a mysterious group of people wearing Tomorrowland pins. She slips him a pin and invites him to follow them into It’s A Small World, the Disney ride that made its debut at the fair. (It’s cross branding, you see.) Turns out, the hopelessly upbeat dark ride doubles as an interdimensional portal to Tomorrowland, a place free of bothersome government bureaucrats and depressing lower

classes, where the world’s elite minds can come together to create utopia.

Then we get to hear Casey’s side of the story. She is introduced in the present day as a cyberpunk archetype, the motorcycle-riding androgynous hacker who is always looking to throw a techno wrench into the works. As she gets out of jail for her latest exploit, she finds a Tomorrowland pin that reveals utopian visions.

When she seeks out the origin of the pins, she alerts an army of creepy humanoid robot men in black who want to keep Tomorrowland secret.

Bird’s movie is mostly about other movies.

He wants to champion the utopian optimism of 1930s-1960s science fiction like Star Trek and Forbidden Planet over the darker, dystopian visions like Blade Runner, Mad Max, and The Hunger Games. But unfortunately, Disney also hired Damon Lindelof, the co-creator of Lost, as a writer and producer. On the one hand, this makes perfect sense, because Lindelof has become the epitome of a modern Hollywood hack, specializing in toeing the corporate line. On the other hand, Lindelof ’s biggest film success has been stripping the philosophical roots from Star Trek, the science-fiction franchise that most epitomizes the optimistic, techno-utopian futurism that Tomorrowland wants us to believe it believes in.

But in the words of the great Afrofuturist George Clinton, all Tomorrowland really believes in is “the great god Big Bucks.” It’s a structurally muddled mess that manages to make flying around with a jetpack feel boring. After a series of joyless action sequences and a layer of steampunk backstory ripped Tomorrowland off wholesale from the Venture Brothers, the film reaches its low point when unmotivated bad guy Nix (Hugh Laurie) delivers a long speech that blames the makers and consumers of dystopian fiction for the world’s ills. It’s kind of a remarkable moment, where corporate entertainment crosses the line into full-blown political propaganda — branding as ideology. Tomorrowland plays more like a commercial than a movie because it’s made by people who can no longer tell the difference.

Behold the gaunt, bony, rodentlike face of Ethan Hawke, who often spackles his strongest performances with the feints and dodges of a scared, reluctant rule-breaker too dimwitted to completely cover his tracks. Hawke’s distracted, sad shiftiness — which makes it seem as though he’s trying (and failing) to pull one over on you — serves him well in Andrew Niccol’s Good Kill, a crisp, smart, talky film about the escalating absurdities of the ruthless, endless war on terror.

Although Good Kill is set in 2010, its hand-wringing over combat ethics and shell-shock remain current. Hawke plays Major Thomas Egan, a middleaged Air Force pilot whose latest tour of duty is part flight simulation and part desk-jockey drudgery. From inside a cramped, windowless mobile bunker on a military base not far from his suburban Las Vegas home, Egan and his fellow airmen sit at their computers and watch live UVA (unmanned aerial vehicle) video footage of potential targets in Afghanistan and elsewhere in the Middle East. Whenever Egan and company are given the order to strike, they abstract their actions and its destructive consequences by repeating a grim mantra: “Missiles away. Time of flight: 10 seconds.” They are then rewarded with footage of faraway people, places, and buildings blowing up.

It’s clear that the job is getting to Egan; the coals in his backyard grill at night remind him of the fiery destruction he helped unleash during the day. Plus, he no longer feels like a soldier — he misses the “fear” of actual manned flight. His drinking is getting worse, his relationship with his wife Molly (January Jones) is falling apart, and he can’t seem to explain to himself why he’s following the orders he’s being given.

Egan’s dilemma is not lost on Lieutenant Colonel Jack Johns (Bruce Greenwood), his superior and occasional confidant.

In contrast to Hawke’s hoarse underplaying, Greenwood imbues his weary philosopher-coach role with swagger and gusto. He gets to curse and rage at new recruits while standing in front of a giant American flag, and he also gets some of the film’s most selfconsciously aphoristic dialogue: “Drones aren’t going anywhere.

They’re going everywhere.”

Although Johns is too on the nose a bit too often about the subtle catch-22s of the new war technology, his willingness to think about the paradoxes of his job seem visionary when contrasted with the devastatingly cruel orders given in perfectly scrubbed English by a CIA member (Peter Coyote, literally phoning it in) whose directives

push Johns, Egan and others into grayer, darker moral corners.

Niccol keeps his ideas about war in the foreground while the suspenseful action unfolding on the monitors remains chillingly remote and abstract. The drone strikes and explosions are both devastating and completely silent, and there’s some artsy stylistic rhymes thrown in, too: Through Niccol’s use of extremely highangle establishing shots for both rural villages and suburban backyards, the parallels between Vegas and Afghanistan grow more obvious. People may live and work in these places, but the eye in the sky sees no meaningful distinctions.

Finally, finally, FINALLY! The Memphis Flyer has had the good sense to curb the liberal writings of old men like Tim Sampson

and Randy Haspel and change the back page of this paper to something more sensible by

rule the rest of the world, instead of these so-called prophets like Mohammed — that the paper has Ann finally come to its senses and is now giving voice to women with some conservative values and extremely Coulter long necks like mine.

That Sampson guy has been writing his drivel for this paper for 26 years now, and it’s about time he gets limited to write just one piece of garbage each month from now on. I don’t know how you readers have put up with his left-wing musings for this many years. I hope that you will just skip over his soonto-be monthly “Last Word” column and pay attention to writers like me, who really have something important to add.

Let’s take a look back: Most recently, Sampson verbally defiled pro-American-values crusader Pamela Geller, just because she had the audacity to host a pro-freedom-of-expression art show in which artists and normal God-fearing American citizens were invited to draw cartoons of the Islamic prophet Mohammed at an art gallery in the great, GREAT state of Texas, which (thank God again) gives criminals the death penalty more than any state in the country. They know how to deal with heathens, and I say more power to them.

It’s still a shame that Texas Governor Rick Perry didn’t beat the communist Barack Obama in the last presidential election. Now look where we are: Our taxes are being used right and left to finance food stamps for poor people who are too lazy to get jobs that would allow them to buy their own food and not put the burden on those of us who need to stockpile our millions for when Obama finally destroys the country, which has been his plan all along, because he is a socialist who was not even born in the United States and is, in fact, a radical Muslim from Africa.

Thank God, again, for people like Sarah Palin and me who aren’t afraid to tell the truth about him. Oh, yeah, you’ll be reading much more about this when Sampson’s “Rant” business is sidelined. You better get down on your knees and pray that this new change lasts for a long, long time.

And, no more will you have to be besieged on such a regular basis with his “ranting” about how gay marriage should be legalized in every state or how he thinks voting rights for impoverished blacks and other Democrats are being jeopardized, or his ongoing babbling about how that Soulsville Charter School’s seniors have all been accepted to college for the past four years that it has had graduations — with their inner-city kids receiving more than $30 million in scholarships. To read his biased (because he works there) views, you’d think white kids from wealthy families, who attend Christian-based private schools, don’t achieve anything. It sickens me, and I know it sickens you.

And then there’s the way he goes on and on and ON about how much he loves Memphis and how it’s the coolest city in the world. Give me a break. Most of you reading this live there and you know what a hellhole Memphis is. There’s nothing but crime and people living on welfare there and one black mayor after another. You all know you live in the poorest, most dangerous, most obese city in the United States and that Memphis has nothing to offer upstanding, conservative people of virtue. He thinks places like Wild Bill’s, Ernestine & Hazel’s, Beale Street, and the Blue Worm are all so great, but he never talks about all the great things on Germantown Parkway or the gated subdivisions in the suburbs, where people exercise their God-given freedom to stay away from all that filth that goes on in the city. He and Haspel are just old, white liberal men who are stuck in their hippie days and don’t see the light of what really matters to true Americans.

And speaking of the great Sarah Palin, it is almost criminal the way this paper has allowed Sampson to criticize her for her beliefs, her animal killing, her beautiful and intelligent children, and her stance on American values. She is a true American hero, but to read Sampson, you’d think she isn’t the genius that she really is, no matter what newspapers she reads. And when she says she can see Russia from Alaska, she is telling the truth. She always has and continues to do so on national Fox News, which Sampson also dismisses as right-wing propaganda, which you all know is not true.

So be very, very happy, people, that “The Rant” will be changing soon, albeit not soon enough for those of you who have had to put up with Sampson’s diatribes for so long. I say, so long to him and pay no attention to what he and Haspel write in their new monthly “Last Word” columns.
