It doesn’t take much more than a stroll through Collierville’s Historic Square to get a sense of what draws people to the town.

n the heart of downtown, located on the northeast corner of the Square, Main Street Realty found a new home in November of 2020. Lisa Fitzgerald, owner of the real estate company, understands one significant element that makes Collierville so appealing to so many. “The Square is unbelievably charming,” she states. She and her husband live only a block off the Square, a place that has ranked among the best downtown districts in the countr y, and she confesses that strolling to work or for evening dining makes life so much nicer. Fitzgerald is quick to point out that there is so much to Collierville that draws people to the town. “It’s the quality of life, the schools, and the

people here” that make Collierville so special. “People from all over — Omaha, Amarillo, California — are attracted to Collierville,” she says, mentioning just a few of the areas her clients have come from. “Whether they are retired and want to get back to the area or young people looking for a great school system,” Collierville offers so much. She specifically notes the attraction of the nationally and regionally recognized Collierville School System as a magnet for young families in the Mid-South. From a business standpoint, such a blend of attributes offers so many selling points to people looking for a new home to raise a family or a comfortable place to retire. Just off the Square to the south,

Sheila Moody’s events space, the Quonset, has defined its location as a wonderful spot to host a wedding reception, a bar mitzvah, a bat mitzvah, or any event that requires a unique location. For many decades, the building provided home to the Wonder Horse factory that produced the childhood favorite rocking horse for countless kiddies. Sheila’s husband purchased the building for his printing business, and in 2015 the space was divided to allow for two businesses under one roof. “We are a small-town couple from Osceola, Arkansas, and we love the small-town feel of Collierville.” Moody points to the many attractions on the Square that help make her own venue so special. “People

can spill out from our space and go to the Square after their party,” and the reverse frequently happens, with weddings occurring at a downtown church or at the Square’s gazebo, with people later making their way to the Quonset for the reception. Like so many who make the Square their business location, Sheila and her husband live within walking distance of their businesses. Mack Andrews knows something about building homes. He’s been doing it for 42 years now. Mack Andrews Homes specializes in custom homes as well as large-scale remodels, a perfect offer for those who come looking for something in Collierville. and he knows the appeal of living in close proximity to the historic district. “There’s something special about living here and many people like the sense of community.” Andrews mentions the appeal of Collierville’s schools to young families. He also knows the appeal to those reaching the “fourth quarter.” He comments, “People in my age group, 65 or older, want a nice home in a nice location. They’re looking for a really nice home and a really small lot.” The market continues to be strong. Noel Fenderson, co-owner of My Town Movers, watches the positive trend of new families and retirees moving into Collierville and comments, “You can go on and on about all the positive points of Collierville. The housing market continues to be strong, and houses don’t last long on the market here.” He hears those positive comments from customers moving into the town, and there’s a familiar ring to the comments: schools, family neighborhoods, and one of the finest town squares in the country. A simple stroll and a few conversations with those who know their hometown, and it’s so easy to see why people gravitate to historic charm and simple friendliness: charm, convenience, and a commitment to quality. For Nathan, 901Music is where it all started. Before the pandemic, he would routinely feature everything from sold-out stadiums to local coffee shop shows. His name got around, and before he knew it, Dick Clark Productions was calling to ask if Nathan and Laura could get on a flight for an awards show that weekend. That’s when their career took off. “It’s a surreal experience that definitely takes some getting used to initially,” says Laura. Our first awards show was

Mollie Walker, vice president and Collierville city executive of Landmark Community Bank, has spent her entire life in Collierville and can’t imagine living, working and raising her kids anywhere else. The Collierville Chamber prides itself on being available to members like Mollie and works hard to offer numerous educational and professional events throughout the year. “The Chamber’s heartbeat is that they want businesses to grow and thrive,” says Noel Fenderson, co-owner of My Town Roofing. Noel, who does business across the Mid-South and belongs to several chambers of commerce, notes that the Collierville Chamber hosts quality events that are never a waste of time. He adds, “It was a defining moment for us as a brand when we started getting involved with what they had to offer.” Of course, a big return on the investment of that involvement is the opportunity to network within the Chamber. Noel learned this lesson firsthand when he bumped into Jeffrey Goldberg, chief revenue officer of Contemporary Media, Inc., at a Collierville Chamber

luncheon, and they both started talking about their businesses. On the spot, Jeffrey hired Noel’s company to put a new roof on his house — a partnership that benefitted them both. Jeffrey, who during the pandemic truly missed the Chamber’s usual bounty of in-person gatherings, says, “The Chamber is phenomenal at producing events and providing networking opportunities.” You definitely get back what you put in. Of course, the event and networking opportunities are only beneficial if you engage with them. And some members take that engagement a step further. Going forward in his career, he plans to take a public relations route. “A college degree is so meaningful and transformative. And many of our students are first-generation. My favorite part about my job is creating pathways and eliminating barriers for the up-and-coming workforce,” Irwin says. Culture Index Brandy McCarley, Culture Index executive advisor, is another trailblazer who is scouting out the future workforce and bringing them to Collierville. This year, many of her clients pivoted to a remote hiring process. And this is a trend McCarley thinks is likely to continue. “Many businesses are headed towards a hybrid model. People are looking for more flexible ways to work, but that doesn’t have to mean strictly working from home. Business owners

are also looking at the expense of managing an off ice full-time and hoping to cut costs in that area,” McCarley says. McCarley serves as a mediator between businesses and their potential hirees. “I provide data to CEOs to help them clarify their team culture, and to make sure they’re putting the right person in the right role,” McCarley says. Her strategy is like Match.com for businesses. Employers identify the traits they are looking for in an employee, and Culture Index uses an assessment to help clients know which applicant is the right fit. “In my experience, the most successful companies rely less on instinct and more on data.” Moving forward, McCarley teaches employers how to better manage, motivate, and communicate with their team members, working both in-off ice and at home. “When it comes to business, people are the most precious resource,” she says.

playing guitar and a sister who turned him onto the tunes and showmanship of Elvis, the rest was just bound to happen. From early fame as a talent show winner in the sixth grade, Leake began the journey so common to many youngsters from the Memphis area. He joined local bands and played the circuit typical to high school players: sock hops and canteens. “So many of the guys I played with were older than me,” he says, and as he learned and grew into the music he would discover the guitar blends of Jimi Hendrix and the blues-imbued sounds of Led Zeppelin. Music was in his blood. “I must have about 20 acoustics and 40 electric guitars in stock right now,” Leake reflects. He notes the tough ride he had initially, opening Consignment Music in Collierville in January 2020, just a couple of months before facing the pandemic. The grand opening was not so grand, but he perseveres, and he looks ahead. On the second floor of his store there’s a jam room, available for rent to groups who want to settle in, practice, and work the kinks out of their own sounds. Leake hopes to see more groups take advantage of the cool space, surrounded by history and a world of guitars. Centered in Collierville history, located in the heart of the town’s historic business district, Evan Leake’s Consignment Music makes its mark on the Town of Collierville. And that sounds just great.

Collierville parks serve as the backdrop for some of the town’s most cherished community gatherings. In July, thousands of people gather in H.W. Cox Park for the annual Independence Day Celebration featuring one of the largest fireworks demonstrations in the Mid-South. During the Christmas season, Town Square Park is transformed into a magical, glowing wonderland with 250,000 holiday lights.

Hinton Park is Collierville’s newest and largest green space, featuring a 9-hole disc golf course, a 1.02-mile paved trail, and a destination playground with musical instruments. While this park has manicured landscaping, the real beauty comes from an emphasis on native plants and ecosystems.

It’s not always the size that matters when it comes to amazing green spaces. The Collierville Park System contains 20 regional, community, and neighborhood parks. Smaller neighborhood parks, like Oakmont Park (left) and Planters Ridge Park, provide residents with quick access to connect with nature, as well as 18.58 miles of greenbelt trails. There’s a park for every family in Collierville. “Ryan’s Place,” named after Ryan Derenberger, is a universally accessible playground in W.C. Johnson Park where all kids can be kids. A favorite, among the 13 other playgrounds in Collierville, is the historic train display in Town Square Park. Kids and adults alike love to explore the trains, which include a caboose, 1940s-era business car, and steam engine locomotive. Halle Park – Story Walk Tucked behind the Collierville Town Hall and the Burch Library, you’ll find Halle Park. Looking out over the park’s 21-acre lake provides spectacular sunset views year-round. The .8-mile paved walking trail encircling the lake is perfect for an after-dinner stroll or a brisk walk with your four-legged friend. In December 2020, the Burch Library and Friends of the Collierville Burch Library installed Storywalk along the walking trail. Storywalk places a children’s story (literally a book taken apart) along the walking trail. It’s a great way for families to spend time together doing something fun, educational, and outdoors. Stories are changed regularly with the seasons, so there’s always a new story for you to explore!
