We call Collierville home because: It is friendly, the people are accepting, we’ve got great schools and, of course, our small-town charm. I also like the many ways people can get involved with town government. Favorite destination: I enjoy Collierville’s parks. I typically walk along the Greenbelt trails, some of which allow you to get lost in the woods. I enjoy the primitive path in Johnson Park that parallels the Wolf River. When you’re back there, the traffic noise disappears and if you’re lucky, you might spot a deer or even bobcat.

Favorite restaurants: When we’ve got out-of-town guests, I take them to Raven and Lily’s; their salmon is awesome. The Highland Restaurant and Pub also does a fantastic job and their ambiance is inviting. The town’s best-kept secret: It’s hardly a secret, but the Morton Museum does a great job with its Lunch and Learn program and the annual Train Day. Of course, I always love the way our town employees decorate for the holidays. When the Square gets lit up, it’s breathtaking.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Square Christmas in Collierville is magical
When the holiday season rolls around, there’s no better way to celebrate it than with a visit to Collierville. In a word, Christmas in Collierville is magical. If you’ve never been, you’re in for a treat. The Town Square sparkles in the glow of a quartermillion white lights. With the gazebo and marketplace trimmed in greenery, the festive effect never fails to delight.

“I love Collierville at Christmas time because of the town’s decorations and the holiday parade,” says Rochelle Stevens, an Olympic gold medalist and longtime resident. “It’s such a close-knit community. It makes me feel like I’m part of a Hallmark movie.” The month-long celebration kicks off with the lighting of the town’s Christmas tree on Tuesday, November 26 at 7 p.m. followed by special events that begin Saturday, November 30. Trimming the Square for the big reveal is an intense, month-long process that requires hundreds of man-hours by town employees. But Mayor Stan Joyner believes the event builds the town’s sense of civic pride. “The Square is a meeting place, a hub for people,” he says. “There’s so much that goes on there at the Square, it’s an important gathering place for our town.”
The annual tree lighting ceremony is hugely popular, with upwards of 10,000 people gathering for the festivities. With the Aldermen present as the countdown arrives, the Mayor finally throws the switch and the Square becomes brilliantly lit. The effect is breathtaking. Sip some hot cocoa and don the 3D holiday glasses that magically transform the lights into snowflakes or candy canes. Drink in the scene as you catch up with friends and spread good cheer. “The Square is nostalgic. It has a special old-time charm, particularly at Christmas,” notes Tourism Director Ashley Carver. “It also has great amenities, with our shops and nice restaurants; it has everything a family could want.”
CHRISTMAS PARADE Another holiday event that shouldn’t be missed is the town’s annual Christmas
parade, which takes place Friday, December 6 at 7 p.m. This community-wide celebration includes handmade floats, high school marching bands, cheer clubs, and, of course, the arrival of Santa. Other community involvement includes First Baptist Church on Byhalia Road, which hands out cups of hot cocoa to bystanders, and St. Patrick’s Presbyterian Church, which provides food trucks. Another unique holiday treat is riding aboard Collierville’s doubledecker bus. The town’s Roadmaster was built in 1964 and is the same brand as those that traveled the streets of London. Grab your seat on Small Business Saturday, November 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free shuttle service runs between Carriage Crossing and the Square. The bus is also available for rent throughout the year.

LIGHTS AROUND TOWN Finally, don’t forget to take the kids out for a night of stargazing. Venture into Collierville’s neighborhoods where residents trim their homes and invite the public to see them shine. The town’s website lists the houses taking part and even suggests recommended driving tours. HAPPY 150TH BIRTHDAY, COLLIERVILLE! The Town of Collierville was founded in 1870, making 2020 our 150 year anniversary. In its earliest days, Collierville’s train depot was a beacon of light for people working on the railroad and traveling through Shelby County. Today, Collierville’s light shines brighter than ever. The railway lantern, a guiding light, is a perfect symbol of both our historical prosperity and the Town’s attitude for our community, schools and businesses. The Town invites you to help us Shine a Light in celebration of our anniversary. There will be a kick-off event in late January, followed by a celebration luncheon at the Collierville Chamber of Commerce’s General Membership Luncheon in February. At this time, we will commemorate the Town’s incorporation on February 17, 1870.

What greatly helped my career was: The mentoring I received from people in the community banking world; people like Frank Cianciola, who’s been in that line of work for many years with Victory and Renasant Bank and now, Bank3. I’ve been fortunate to know some great community bankers and I’ve developed some loyal clients as a result of those relationships. One funny thing about Collierville’s status as
America’s Best Main Street: When the town received that award from Parade magazine in 2014, I had business in McMinnville, Oregon. I remember telling the folks I was meeting with that we’d been rivals. McMinnville had also been in the running but with slightly fewer votes, ended up the first runner-up. The business leaders told me they weren’t too bothered by their second place finish, however. They laid claim to having the best Main Street west of the Mississippi! We all had a good laugh over that. You might be surprised to learn that: I teach at five university banking programs, including the Virginia Bankers School of Bank Management at the University of Virginia. My class is on technology, payments, and cybersecurity.

THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS IS KNOWN FOR BEING TOUGH: HARD WORK, LONG HOURS, AND THE STRESS CAN BE THROUGH THE ROOF. Perhaps that’s why nearly half of new restaurants don’t make it to their fifth anniversary. Given that, you might say Jim’s Place Grille, which started downtown in 1921, is something of a unicorn. Owned and operated by the Taras family for almost 100 years, their success is unparalleled. Come dine at Jim’s Place Grille on Houston Levee Road in Collierville and you’ll see the family pictures of their restaurants. Say hello to Dimitri Taras, who works alongside his sons, James and Sam, to carry on the family tradition. At 75, Dimitri remains robust. He golfs regularly and has pared back his schedule to 40 hours a week, modestly noting he’s only in four days COLLIERVILLECHAMBER.COM
a week these days. You’ll still find him in the kitchen, too, cutting filets or skewering lamb. “I’d hate to think of how many pounds of steak he’s cut over the years,” marvels James Taras. What keeps his dad going? “You need to love this business to do it,” replies Dimitri. “Because restaurants are a most volatile business.” That volatility runs the gamut, from making sure food is consistent and fresh to finding balance in a kitchen and wait staff that can change mercurially from one year to the next. Add to that running a family business and well, things get interesting. “The biggest challenge is believing in one vision and rowing the boat in the same direction,” says James Taras.

AN AMERICAN STORY Their family story exemplifies the American dream. Nick Taras, Dimitri’s uncle, was the oldest of eight siblings who immigrated from Greece to Memphis at the turn of the century. At age 12, Nick went to work as a shoeshine boy downtown. In 1921, Nick and his friend, Jim Katsoudes, opened the original Jim’s Place in the basement of the William Len Hotel at Monroe and Main. in with brothers Bill (Dimitri’s father) and George, at a new location on Union across from the Peabody Hotel. Here, Jim’s Place flourished. They operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week for more than four decades. Because they were so often at the restaurant, the brothers had cots in a room above the business where they slept. “When Uncle Nick finally decided to close the restaurant for Christmas one year,” says Dimitri, “They couldn’t lock the front door because no one could find the key.” The next location was 52 S. Second, above Charlie Vergos Rendezvous. Dimitri started working here, following a brief stint in the Army reserves. The year was 1967. Business downtown had been flagging and the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. brought further gloom. Finally, the unthinkable happened with the closing of the Peabody Hotel. “When the Peabody closed [in 1975], we left downtown,” says Dimitri. The saving grace was the Taras’ country place, a small house the family

Dining had built in 1948 off Summer Avenue on Shelby Oaks Drive. The twoacre farm offered an escape from the restaurant’s noisy demands. As a way of remaining connected to his Greek roots, Dimitri’s father, Bill, kept a small herd of sheep on the farm. When Easter rolled around each year, they would roast an entire lamb in celebration. With the business faltering, Dimitri’s mother suggested they convert their farm property into a new restaurant. The idea quickly took root. In 1976, the family opened Jim’s Place East. The homey atmosphere quickly attracted a new and loyal clientele and for many years theirs was a popular destination. But eventually, that success crested too, as the neighborhood changed and people began to eat there only on special occasions. It was time once again to relocate. The Shelby Oaks location closed in 2010 and for a time, a second location, Jim’s Place at Perkins and Poplar, run by brother Costa Taras with his son, Bill, was in operation. That restaurant closed in 2017.

Meanwhile, as east Shelby County continued to expand, Dimitri and his sons began to think Collierville would be a good fit for their business. “Collierville was outside of our comfort zone. Especially being in a strip center, it was not a sure shot that it would work. But we knew that the brand had strength,” observes Dimitri. “We wanted something casual enough for families but nice enough for our FedEx clientele.” When Dimitri first arrived at the site to walk it with his wife, Mary Katherine, she took a piece of chalk from her purse and drew the layout for the restaurant on the slab. She would go on to design the interior space, too — she’s managed her design firm, MKFT Interiors, for more than 30 years — choosing a rich palette of earth tones that gives the restaurant a polished sophistication. The move also meant that Dimitri’s two sons could join in the business. Sam worked as a golf instructor at Spring Creek Ranch and James, with a finance background, was in sales and marketing for Sysco food service. While both had grown up working at Jim’s Place East, their father never pressured them to follow in his footsteps. “He never even asked if I wanted to do it,” notes Sam. Sam now does marketing for the restaurant and James works as a manager. Business in Collierville was slow initially. But as the word got out and the town’s growth blossomed, the restaurant gradually took off. Even the economic downturn of 2008 didn’t hurt business. The family eventually expanded the bar and built a second dining room. The restaurant now seats 200. Collierville has been a great fit for Jim’s Place Grille, providing an upscale dining experience the community enjoys and giving customers a place to entertain clients, celebrate a birthday, or simply enjoy a drink at the bar. “The past 13 years have been the most enjoyable for me in the restaurant business,” notes Dimitri. Hook Point Brewery, makers of Flat Hat beer Our team comprises: My wife, Cynthia, and I came up with the idea for Flat Hat American Ale in 2016. I’m a FedEx pilot and former naval aviator. Stephan “Tank” Emswiler is a fellow pilot and has been a home brewer for 25 years. Our head brewer, Jay Marchmon, has done beer commercially since 2014. You might be surprised to learn that: We will be Collierville’s first brewery. There is only one other brewery, Meddlesome Brewing Company, that’s located in East Shelby County. All of the others are in Midtown or Downtown. We felt that folks in Collierville and Germantown would appreciate having a tasty local brewpub. Not many people realize the name Flat Hat: Is an aviation term that refers to flying in a reckless

manner. It’s about testing your limits and pushing boundaries. To that end, we plan on supporting sporting events to encourage people to be active and adventurous. What will we be offering: We’ll be a brewpub, so people can come to Hook Point Brewery for lunch or dinner and enjoy one of six craft beers we’ll be making on the premises, including our Scottish stout, a mild English bitter, a Kolsch-style ale, and a hazy IPA. Our flagship, Flat Hat American Ale, recently won a bronze medal at the U.S. Open Beer Championship in the Golden/Blonde Ale category. We can’t wait to show off our medal. Our biggest challenge thus far: Definitely our building. It’s on South Mt. Pleasant Road (south of the Square) in the old Kelly’s Attic
building. Since this was once a manufacturing plant, the renovation has taken awhile to get everything up to code (I’d hoped we’d be open last year). But we’re making headway and as my architect said recently, “Now the dominoes should start falling.” Our aim is to be open to the public by March 2020. Our clientele will be: A wide range of people. We’ve attended a number of beer festivals nationally and done some local one-day events and we often notice how varied the audience for craft beers is. There are a lot of empty nesters and retirees who enjoy these beers, but college students and millennials, too. What we hope to offer is something different and unique. Why I Love Collierville
We call Collierville home because: We love how family-friendly the town is. When we moved here, our children were just 1 and 3. We knew the schools were top-notch. But since my father-in-law was living with us, we needed a home with two master suites. We also wanted a home that didn’t require a ton of work. What we found in Collierville suited us to a “T”. Favorite destination: With my son playing freshman football at Collierville High and my daughter competing on the school’s national champion pom squad, our family is active. My roots in Collierville run deep: I grew up in Collierville. My father, Tom Brooks, owned Brooks Pharmacy on the Square (where Raven and Lily is now). So as a child, I frequently came to visit him at the store. My mother helped out, too, balancing the books or running the soda fountain. I loved coming to the Square. My business is in keeping with our building’s early history: The building dates to 1916 and was originally the home of the Kelsey Brothers Mercantile store. The local telephone exchange operated out of the second floor. What prompted me to start Brooks Collection: Out of college, I worked my way up the corporate ladder, eventually serving as the director of consumer relations for the pharmaceutical company, Schering-Plough. I helped to

address the complaints and lawsuits that arose at the company. It was stressful but also very interesting work. However, at age 42 I came to a place where I wanted to step away from the corporate world. I realized the one place that really made me happy was the garden, and I loved The Urban Gardener store with their soothing fountains. When I realized Collierville didn’t have anything like this, I thought, this could be the business for me. After a trip to Italy, I returned home, resigned from Schering-Plough in January 1999, and opened my shop later that year in July. What I love about being on the Square: You can come with your husband and kids and there’s something here for everyone. Plus, the town of Collierville makes the environment so beautiful. They’re meticulous about the decor, putting up corn stalks and pumpkins for
the fall or twinkle lights during the holidays. The Square is also everevolving, as the next generation of business owners discover what can be done here. Of course, we worried a bit when Carriage Crossing went up; we wondered how it would impact our business. But my daddy always said, “Competition is a wonderful thing because it keeps you on your toes.” And you know, he was right. We are two totally different destinations. I attribute my success to: My willingness to listen to my customers. That’s what led us to expand into home decor. We also pride ourselves on customer service. As for our goods, we carry beautiful ceramics by Peter’s Pottery from Mound Bayou, lamps, and lots of gifts. We celebrated our 20th anniversary in July 2019 and I look forward to seeing Collierville’s continued growth.

WHEN GREG AND LINDSAY HARRIS LEARNED THEY’D BE MOVING TO SHELBY COUNTY FOR GREG’S FUNDRAISING JOB WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE, THE UPPER MOST TASK ON THEIR TO-DO LIST WAS FINDING A GREAT PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM.
“The schools were the deciding factor,” says Lindsay of their choice to move to Collierville last year from Atlanta. Their children, Emery (10), and Grayson (12), had attended top-notch public schools in East Cobb County, so finding something comparable was very important to the couple. “It was a deal breaker for me because we both feel strongly about sending our kids to public school and exposing them to the real world, to the diversity within that environment,” says Lindsay. Despite saying farewell to lifelong friends in Atlanta, the family’s transition has been a smooth one. They appreciate the quality of life they find in Collierville, where everything they need is only minutes away. The town’s close proximity to Memphis International Airport is also a plus, given the travel Greg’s job demands as senior director of development for the University of Tennessee Foundation. One thing the couple hadn’t anticipated was Lindsay’s breast cancer diagnosis. That bombshell dropped two months after their move. But with the support of excellent physicians and a circle of nurturing friends, what began as a blow turned into a blessing. “It was a blessing moving here because we’ve had great doctors and everyone in the last year has been so kind and helpful,” says Lindsay. Adds Greg, “We feel grateful to be in a place where we’ve felt so
comforted.” Once her treatment is completed, Lindsay plans to build a counseling practice as a pediatric life coach, targeting families whose children struggle with learning challenges like ADHD and ADD. “My strategy is to look at every child and see the light in them and work to bring that out,” says Lindsay. Since she and her son have both had to learn how to manage ADHD, “I wanted to help other families because this issue is very misunderstood.” As for their favorite destinations around town? It’s taking friends to see the trains in Town Square followed by a plate of juicy burgers at Dyer’s Cafe.

OLYMPIAN ROCHELLE STEVENS WHEN YOU VISIT THE TENNESSEE SPORTS HALL OF FAME IN NASHVILLE, YOU’LL FIND THE STORY OF TRACK STAR ROCHELLE STEVENS, A TWOTIME OLYMPIC GOLD AND SILVER MEDALIST IN TRACK AND FIELD. THIS COLLIERVILLE RESIDENT WAS INSPIRED TO COMPETE BY ANOTHER FAMOUS TENNESSEE OLYMPIAN, WILMA RUDOLPH, WHO WAS THE FIRST AMERICAN WOMAN TO WIN THREE GOLD MEDALS IN A SINGLE OLYMPIAD IN 1960. Rochelle trained hard as a teenager, coached initially by her mother, Reverend Beatrice Holloway, before successfully competing in high school and college. She became an AAU Junior Olympics National Champion before setting her sights on making the Olympic team. Her dream came true in Barcelona in 1992, where she was an Olympic Silver medalist in the 4×400 meter relay. She went on to win Gold in 1996, running the 4×400 relay in Atlanta. A four-time USA Track and Field National Champion and ranked Top Ten in the World six times in the 400 meters, Stevens retired from competition in 2000. Now, this 52-year-old businesswoman is telling her story with a newly released picture book for children, Run Like Rochelle. The story details her inspiring rise and encourages children to practice self-discipline, as well as healthy eating and exercise habits. Stevens moved to Collierville in 2006 and loves the convenience of life here. “I liked it so much, I talked it up and my family soon followed me out here,” she says with a laugh. Now, her mother and sister also call Collierville home. Stevens is the owner of Rochelle Health and Wellness Online, a business that gives clients access COLLIERVILLECHAMBER.COM
to her wealth of knowledge on weight loss and fitness. Stevens also does motivational speaking, addressing subjects like stress reduction, how to develop a winner’s mindset, and diversity and inclusion in the workplace. She feels Collierville’s best trait is its family feel. “Because family is important to the people who live here,” she says. “Go to any venue, whether it’s a restaurant, park, or town event, “and you’ll find it’s a family-friendly affair.” You’ll likely find her at Jim’s Place Grille or out for a relaxed evening at O’Charley’s, where she and her mother often share a plate of chicken fingers. “As much as my mom and I eat there,” she says, “people must wonder if we cook!”

WHAT ATTRACTED LIFELONG MEMPHIS RESIDENTS DAVID AND ASHLEY BRADFORD TO COLLIERVILLE? THE TOWN’S EASY ACCESS TO THE OUTDOORS.
When the Bradfords relocated in 2008, they got a great house for their money (the model home of their development). And since they knew they’d soon want to start a family, Collierville’s awardwinning school system was also a plus. But the town’s greenbelt was a huge draw, since both enjoy running and biking. What they didn’t anticipate was becoming part of a close-knit community. David is a mechanical engineer with Smith Seckman Reid, Inc. while Ashley helps patients as a physical therapist with Rehab Etc. Both are civic-minded, which led to their involvement with Leadership Collierville. “The best part of Leadership Collierville was meeting great people and getting more connected with the city. We had so much fun. I would totally do it again,” says Ashley. David’s leadership continued after completing Leadership Collierville and he’s now serving a second term on the COLLIERVILLECHAMBER.COM
Shelby County Board of Commissioners. Raising their 5-year-old twins, Ava and David, keeps this 40-something couple busy, but Ashley always makes time to pursue her passion as a triathlete. She has close ties to the training club, Memphis Thunder, and competed in her first IRONMAN in Arizona in 2017. Finishing in just over 12 hours, Ashley went on to compete in the Worlds. Having placed second in her age group at the 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 Ohio, Ashley again qualified for Worlds. Now the couple is busy preparing for a trip
to New Zealand next fall where Ashley will compete in the 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship. All that training means the town’s greenbelt trails hold real appeal. “The biking is so great out here,” says Ashley. “The way the parks are all connected, I can easily do a 20-mile run or ride and do a loop.” As a family, their outdoor travels take them many places, but their favorite activities are watching the spectacular Fourth of July fireworks and playing at the W.C. Johnson splash park.

Even their dad, Robert, gets in on the action as the public address announcer for the University of Memphis Tigers men and women’s soccer games. Schelerria says she and Robert moved to Collierville in 1997 because they were looking for good schools and, “We fell in love with the Estanaula Trails” subdivision.” Not only was the neighborhood beautiful, but it was convenient to their jobs at FedEx and within walking distance of Sycamore View Elementary School. Schelerria works as a project manager at FedEx and Robert recently started a new job with Sedgwick as director of IT applications after being with FedEx Services as an IT manager for 22 years. Having a neighborhood school nearby served to strengthen the bonds among families up and down the street. “We didn’t expect to find such a close-knit community where everybody knows everybody,” says Schelerria. “When you’re out and about, you see your neighbors and they know your kids. Collierville has a real small-town feel.” Now days, with Jasmine playing for the Lobos soccer team and Jada running track with the Memphis Mustangs and with Collierville High’s track team, the family is constantly traveling to tournaments and meets. Jada even made it to state track finals and competed at last year’s Junior Olympics as a hurdler. When they are home, it’s time to relax and decompress. “We typically hang out as a family, watching movies at home or going to the park,” says Schelerria. Since they enjoy eating Mexican food, their favorites restaurants include Frida’s at Carriage Crossing and Booya’s on Poplar. The couple also recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a wedding vow renewal ceremony and all 12 of their original bridesmaids and groomsmen were present to toast them. For this family, community is key.

Behind the scenes, Collierville Arts Council (part of the Collierville Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department), works to promote and coordinate the town’s arts events. The council produces four high-quality theatre performances each season, bringing together professionals and amateurs to present musicals like Beauty and the Beast, Madeline, and The Producers. This December, you can catch the holiday favorite Miracle on 34th Street. Producing quality productions is no small task, notes Collierville Arts Council Executive Director Terry Dean, “You’re trying to give back a great product while staying within budget.” So those involved wear many hats, like town employee Richard Logston, who is the Harrell’s production manager as well as its technical director and set builder. Arts Council members volunteer as well, sewing costumes, managing ticket sales, and ushering at each performance. It’s truly a community effort open to all.

45 SUPPORTING THE ARTS The Arts Council started as a fundraising organization that worked collaboratively to establish the Harrell Performing Arts Theatre in 1987. Since then, the council has steadily prospered, growing in its support from community members and local businesses alike. The Harrell Theatre is also the performance home for the New Day Children’s Theatre. Now in its 14th season, this nonprofit company stages three performances annually and even offers one sensory-friendly performance each show for children with autism. Summer camps, workshops and dance classes are also available, some at their Carriage Crossing studio. New Day provides a nurturing environment for children of all ages to have fun while gaining theatrical experience.
EXPLORE THE MORTON MUSEUM You’ll also find special arts events featured throughout the year that celebrate the town’s historic and cultural richness. The Morton Museum of Collierville History regularly produces in-depth exhibits that tell the fascinating stories of Collierville’s people, past and present. Train Heritage Day takes place each August and brings together train buffs from across the region. During the day-long event, visitors can view hand-built train boards at the museum, hear live music, and climb aboard the restored executive train car on permanent display in the Town Square. Collierville’s train depot, the Depot Visitors Center, is also a popular destination for visitors to Town Square. Since 2017, the depot has served as the town’s tourism center.
“People who’ve grown up here are excited to be able to come inside the depot again,” says tourism director Ashley Carver, who regularly receives visitors from around the country. Viewing the depot’s pictorial displays, visitors can learn the significant role the Memphis and Charleston rail line played in the development of the Town of Collierville after the railroad’s arrival in 1852. The Memphis and Charleston was the first rail line to connect the Atlantic Coast to the Mississippi River. During the Civil War, this line served as the only link between eastern and western states. Today, the Norfolk Southern Railroad continues to ply the rails, shipping goods across the country and blowing their whistle as they pass through the Square.
FUNDRAISERS Another community affair is the Harrell’s annual Arts in the Alley fundraiser. This popular October event, which takes place in the alley east of the Square (behind Raven and Lily and Brooks Collection), brings together purveyors of tasty foods, handcrafted beer, and raucous live entertainment. Patrons who support the Harrell’s programming get the satisfaction of knowing the proceeds benefit the Collierville Arts Council.

If speed and endurance are more your thing, Collierville has a sizable triathlete community centered around the Memphis Thunder Racing club.
