The Collierville Chamber of Commerce Names Shelby Williamson as President

After searching for the right candidate and fit, the Collierville Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce Shelby Williamson as President.

Before joining the Collierville Chamber, Williamson served as Regional Sales Representative for Personnel Placements, LLC, a West Tennessee–based staffing and recruiting firm. In that role, she partnered with businesses to design and deliver tailored staffing and talent solutions, combining consultative sales, marketing outreach, and workforce strategy to meet the specific needs of local employers.

She previously served as Economic Development Director for the Weakley County Economic Development Board, where she strengthened relationships with existing industries and major employers. She later joined the Greater Memphis Chamber as Director of Business Development, concentrating on local

and national relationship-building strategies.

Williamson holds a B.A. in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations from Mississippi State University. She earned her Tennessee Certified Economic Developer designation in 2024.

A native of Jackson, Tennessee, Williamson is deeply committed to supporting business growth and fostering collaboration across West Tennessee. She currently lives in Horn Lake, Mississippi, with her husband, Hunter, and their two-year-old daughter, Sutton, and plans to relocate to Collierville as she begins her new role with the Chamber.

“We are thrilled to have Shelby join our team,” said Joe Sarrio, Chairman of the Board. “Shelby brings renewed energy and passion to the Collierville Chamber. She will be invaluable as we continue to grow and innovate.” ■

The Collierville Chamber of Commerce is more than just a business network — it’s your partner, your advocate and your connection to a thriving community. Whether you’re a new entrepreneur or an established business leader, the Chamber exists to support your growth and success in meaningful, measurable ways.

When I moved my State Farm Insurance agency to Collierville and opened in January 2012, one of the first steps I took was joining the Collierville Chamber. Looking back nearly 14 years later, I can say without hesitation that this decision helped shape the success of my business. The Chamber introduced me to people I never would have met otherwise — people who became friends, clients and business partners. It also gave me affordable, impactful ways to promote my agency and build my brand throughout Collierville and the surrounding areas.

But the Chamber’s value goes far beyond marketing or networking. It’s about building something that matters — relationships, trust, community, and being a good neighbor. I’ve had the privilege of helping many people through my insurance and financial service products, and I’ve seen others do the same in their industries, all because of connections made through the Chamber. Together, we’re making Collierville stronger by supporting the people and businesses that call it home.

This year marks an exciting new chapter for the Chamber as we welcome our new president, Shelby Williamson. Shelby brings fresh energy, vision and a deep commitment to member success. Under her leadership, we’re focused on delivering an even greater return on your investment — from new programming and events to intentional opportunities to connect, learn and grow.

We know your time and resources matter. That’s why we are committed to making every moment you spend with the Chamber worthwhile. Whether you’re looking to expand your network, find strategic partnerships, or become more engaged in the community, there’s no better place to do it than right here. In fact, we believe there isn’t another organization in the greater Memphis area that provides as much value to proactive members as the Collierville Chamber of Commerce.

In the end, you get out what you put in. You reap what you sow. The more you engage, the more you’ll grow — not just professionally, but as part of a community that truly cares.

Let’s keep building, connecting and moving Collierville forward — together. ■

Maureen Fraser knows her town

Mayor Maureen Fraser has always been clear about her role as a public servant: “It’s important to know who you’re electing and what they stand for.” For Fraser, that means prioritizing town safety, keeping schools strong and government accountable.

She believes that sentiment rings even truer today, as town leaders and residents work to envision a path for the future in the Town’s Comprehensive Plan.

“I like to make things better, not just get things done,” she says.

Like many residents in Collierville, Fraser moved here from afar. Born outside of Chicago, she grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in a family with eight brothers and sisters. She graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant management. At that time, Courtyard Marriott was just preparing to launch and she’d been offered a job, “Can you imagine where I might have gone with that?” Fraser says with a laugh.

But her husband, David, who is also a

Purdue graduate, had been offered a more promising position in Houston, so the couple moved south and Fraser signed on with Adam’s Mark Hotel. She worked in guest relations there, eventually moving on to manage several dental practices.

The Frasers came to Collierville in 1995 after David was hired to do communications and marketing work by The Cotton Board. The couple visited Germantown and Arlington but were drawn to Collierville’s hometown vibe. Not long after their arrival with Brittany, they had two more children, Andrew and Abby. While Fraser did take some time off to raise their family, being content to tend the home was definitely not her style.

“I became that stay-at-home mom who’s never at home,” she says with a laugh.

Instead, she volunteered through the PTA at her children’s schools and used that experience as a springboard to expand her community involvement. Fraser became a charter member of the Collierville Library

Board, worked on the Comprehensive Plan Committee, served as a board member of Main Street Collierville and Leadership Collierville (from which she graduated in the early 2000s), and assisted the Planning Commission. She got a window into the work being done by many of the town’s key organizations.

Says Fraser, “The more I learned as I got involved with the community, the more questions I began to ask and I thought I could make a difference.”

She also assisted at the Collierville Education Foundation, working alongside John Green, owner of John Green and Company REALTORS.

As Fraser was earning her real estate license, she asked Green if he had any openings. He did and Fraser joined Green’s company where she continues today as an affiliate broker and marketing/promotions manager.

Then Mayor Linda Kerley asked Fraser if she’d ever consider running for public office, “because ‘we need people who want to get involved in the community.’ ” Fraser ultimately

ran for town alderman in 2003, winning her race and holding the position for six terms.

During her tenure, Fraser worked alongside Stan Joyner, a Collierville native who also served as a town alderman and mayor. Joyner skillfully managed the town’s growth during his four terms in office, and helped to establish the Collierville School System. Fraser, who served as the town’s vice mayor (2006, 2008, and continuously since 2013), says she learned much from Joyner’s guidance.

“Stan was steady, intuitive and not one to rush into making a decision.” He was always thorough, teaching her the value of “making sure you have all the information you need before coming to a conclusion,” she says.

MAYOR FRASER

Fraser became Collierville’s newest mayor in November 2024 and while she had ample service as the town’s vice mayor, she’s been surprised to learn how many people request to meet with “The Mayor.” For example, she answered questions posed by Shelby County applicants planning to run for county mayor. She attended the opening celebration of Memphis in May and joined with members of the Jewish Community Partners in commemorating the 80th Anniversary of Liberation. The service recognized the freeing of Germany’s concentration camps. Such activities are giving her a broader view of issues and events beyond the town’s border.

ASSISTING SMALL BUSINESS

When it comes to supporting small business, town leaders hold regular Wednesday meetings which give entrepreneurs the opportunity to come before the Departmental Review Team (DRT) (comprised of members from various town departments, including Fire, Parks and Recreation, Police, and Public Services) with their ideas and/or questions about starting a business.

The town website also has a section under the Business Guide tab that gives entrepreneurs answers to what is required when launching a new business. The information covers zoning, licensing, signage, parking, and other topics.

One issue Fraser and town aldermen must grapple with is housing. Fraser says she would propose a moratorium on any new apartment approvals in order to take a pause and work with town staff to study where Collierville is on apartment developments. In addition, she wants to examine the town’s overall housing makeup regarding the percentage of apartments, single-family homes, retirement communities, and condominiums.

“Growth is necessary, but it has to be deliberate, meaning the type of growth the town wants and on our terms,” she says. “I will be dedicated to maintaining low tax rates and conservative fiscal policies.” ■

Service Above Self

The Rotary Club’s volunteer efforts have strengthened the community for 90 years

The Collierville Rotary Club sums up their mission in a single phrase: Service Above Self. Members embrace Rotarian values by giving of their time and talent to projects that benefit both the citizens of Collierville and beyond. This year marks the club’s 90th anniversary.

Susan Ewing, Chief Navigator at Ewing Marketing Partners, joined Rotary in 2021 and stepped up as the club’s newest president. “It used to be that women weren’t allowed,” notes Ewing. But times have changed.

Today, 30 percent of Collierville Rotarians are professional women. Ewing credits membership chair Larry Boyd with recruiting many new members and successfully increasing the club’s numbers by 55 percent during the past two years. “We’re growing and have enthusiastic individuals who want to take on leadership roles,” she says.

The club’s impressive growth — they currently have 115 members — led Collierville Rotary to be honored in 2025 as District 6800’s Club of the Year. Collierville’s is one of 33 clubs districtwide.

Belonging to this nonprofit can be useful professionally, since many members are established professionals, business owners, and community leaders. Mayors Maureen Fraser and Stan Joyner, realtor John Green, and Lander’s Ford owner Don Kitchens are Rotarians. But it’s also beneficial because the group is dedicated to supporting philanthropic initiatives and developing leadership skills in its members.

The projects Collierville Rotary undertake are varied: from providing gift cards to help feed local families at Thanksgiving to volunteering during December for Salvation Army Bell Ringing. This effort raised $114,212, the highest amount of money collected at a single location across northern Mississippi and Tennessee. The club also helped to cover the expenses of Collierville High’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) club, when the teens attended the National Leadership Conference in Anaheim, California earlier this year. And they annually raise money to fund $2000 college scholarships available to Collierville High School students.

A broader focus is reflected in Rotary International’s Purple Pinkie Donuts fundraiser. Last year, Collierville businesses purchased Dunkin’s purple donuts that Rotarians delivered. The club raised more than $4,232 with a match total

COLLIERVILLE ROTARY CLUB

of $64,125. The money will go towards polio eradication (a purple pinkie indicates a child has been vaccinated) and pay for the vaccination of more than 21,000 children worldwide.

The club also spearheads the hosting of foreign exchange students through Rotary Youth Exchange. This program provides an opportunity for high school students internationally to study in the U.S. International exchanges are a way of fostering service and cultural understanding. The program is a logical outgrowth of Rotary International’s status, since there are 37,000 Rotary clubs worldwide.

Ewing represented Collierville’s club as she traveled to the city of Calgary in Alberta, Canada in June to participate in Rotary’s annual international conference. A group of 13 Rotarians attended from the Mid-South.

To help celebrate the club’s 90th anniversary, students from Collierville High School have been busy shooting video footage to accompany a script being written by Ewing. The anniversary celebration takes place in April 2026. ■

Why small businesses matter to the Collierville Chamber of Commerce

Small businesses offer more than just a place to buy the goods or services you might need; they are essential contributors to the wellbeing, character and diversity of Collierville. If you think about it, the benefits small businesses provide go far beyond the products they sell or the services they provide. These companies become pillars of support, by creating jobs, fostering local culture, and investing in the place we call home.

SMALL BUSINESSES MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

• By Creating New Jobs — One of the most direct impacts of small businesses is their ability to create local jobs. These businesses, such as the shops at Carriage Crossing or restaurants like Memphis Pizza or Hueys, can be the first places residents look for work. By hiring locally, small businesses help to reduce the area’s unemployment rate. What’s more, they give employees a sense of purpose and strengthen their ties to Collierville.

• By Supporting Local Causes & Boosting Nonprofits — Small businesses are deeply rooted in our community and often lead the way in supporting local charities, events and causes. Small business owners often give back in very meaningful ways. They sponsor Collierville Schools sports teams, they donate their time to projects run by the Collierville Rotary Club and Junior Auxiliary, and they organize charity events for groups like Leadership Collierville and The Collierville Education Foundation. What’s more, their support helps to raise awareness about important causes. By giving of their time and resources, small business owners strengthen the fabric of our community.

• By Contributing to the Local Culture — Every small business has a unique flavor, one that’s influenced by its owners, employees, and often, its customers. These businesses shape our town’s cultural identity. Whether it’s family-owned restaurants like The Silver Caboose and Jim’s Place Grille, or shops on Main Street Collierville like CJ Lilly &

Company, Dirt & Daisies Children’s Boutique or The Brooks Collection, small businesses offer a distinctive experience that can boost town pride.

• By Meeting the Community’s Needs — Small businesses are able to adapt to the specific needs of our community. They’re in tune with their customers’ needs. And businesses like Travel Leaders of Collierville or Collierville Funeral Home can provide truly personalized service.

• By Supporting the Local Economy —

Small businesses contribute to our local economy in powerful ways. By purchasing materials and services from local suppliers like Maximus Building Supply or Russell’s Farm Supply, customers can create a ripple effect that benefits other area companies. Additionally, small business owners pay local taxes, which help to fund the town’s infrastructure, including Collierville’s award-winning schools and public services. That tax base improves our overall quality of life.

• By Offering Customer-Focused Service — Small businesses thrive by providing exceptional customer service. Owners and employees are often closely involved with their customers, building lasting relationships based on trust and shared interests. Building those personal relationships leads to a higher level of customer satisfaction and loyalty. Small businesses like Collierville Compounding Pharmacy, Harlan Eye Care, Poplar View Pet Hospital, or Pittman Physical Therapy can go the extra mile to meet the customer’s specific needs by customizing their products and services.

• By Investing in Collierville — Small business owners often reinvest in the communities where they operate. This investment takes many forms, from upgrading facilities like Pickler Companies or Southern Security Federal Credit Union to creating sustainable business practices that benefit the environment. Small

businesses care about Collierville and are motivated to ensure it remains a vibrant as well as a healthy place to live and work.

SMALL BUSINESSES

DESERVE YOUR SUPPORT

• Creating Local Jobs — Supporting small businesses fosters job creation in Collierville. Business owners provide employment opportunities for residents, be it teenagers and seniors, or folks in between. Local jobs reduce the need to commute further for work while providing meaningful employment. Often, the jobs created by small businesses reflect the values of Collierville. Employees can also benefit with flexible schedules and a better work-life balance.

• Keeping Money in Collierville — When we shop locally, more of our money stays within Collierville. Small businesses are also more likely to spend a portion of their revenue with local suppliers, meaning

your money circulates in the local economy. This creates a self-sustaining cycle that benefits everyone.

• Giving Back Locally — Small businesses are committed to giving back to the communities that support them. Whether it’s through charitable donations or volunteering for local events, they play an active role in strengthening the town’s social fabric. Their engagement with local causes creates a sense of shared responsibility which foster community spirit and inspires others to give back as well.

• Maintaining the Character of Collierville — One of the most compelling reasons to support small businesses is to preserve Collierville’s unique character and charm. When you support small businesses, you’re helping to maintain the town’s distinctiveness. Small, independent stores, restaurants, and service providers are often the very places that make a place feel unique and welcoming.

WHY SMALL BUSINESS MATTERS

SMALL BUSINESSES REFLECT OUR IDENTITY

Small businesses matter — now more than ever. They create jobs, bolster the local economy and contribute to the cultural vibrancy of Collierville. More importantly, these companies allow us to personally connect with our neighbors, thus helping to preserve Collierville’s distinctive character. By supporting small business owners, we’re actively investing in the future of our community, helping to perpetuate a cycle of growth and prosperity. So the next time you’re out shopping, consider the far-reaching impact of your purchase and go local. Support the small business owners who help make Collierville one-of-a-kind. ■

Where Everybody Knows Your Name

Maggie Emerson’s Maroon Brew Co. blends good times with great beer

When Maggie Emerson was considering launching her small business in Collierville, she was confident of one thing: “I knew the time was ripe for a brewery and family spot.” That belief led her to uncork Maroon Brew Co., where she makes and sells her own beer.

The grand opening took place in June 2024, and although only a year old, this craft brewpub has become a mainstay for Collierville beer lovers. Here you’ll find a restaurant, a play corner full of games for tots, and a menu that features specialty hot dogs, burgers, wraps, and sides, all served familystyle in an open, relaxed environment.

But Emerson’s hand-crafted beers are what take center stage. The brewer offers 10 different pours, a mix of blonde, amber, wheat, and specialty ales that sport familiar names like Gazebo Golden, Byhalia Brown and Pickwick Pale Ale. Maroon employs 24 full-and parttime workers, including a manager who also

on tap “so you’re getting something new and fresh every time,” says Emerson.

TASTING THE COMPETITION

When Maggie and her husband, Gerald, were dating, they’d often travel to breweries around the Southeast, tasting beers so as to experience the range of products being produced by other beer makers. Gerald is also a home brewer. Once they married, Emerson decided to dive in. She joined Hook Point Brewing Company and learned everything from the ground up.

Thoughts of opening her own brewpub came after the pandemic in 2020. For a year and a half, she worked on her business plan. The first word she wrote was “Service.” She moved on, retooling the building and applying for business, food and beverage licenses she’d need to operate.

“I research stuff to death before I do it,” says

Emerson, noting her keen eye for detail. “I read up until I have a grasp on it.”

Folks like then-town alderman Maureen Fraser offered guidance as she navigated the beer board regulations, city ordinances, and building codes.

“The city gives you a framework in which to function so I had zero problems,” she says. “And Fraser was so supportive.”

Employees at US Foods, a company that lends assistance to first-time restauranteurs, were also helpful. She worked with a team of advisors who answered questions and gave solid advice. One team member walked through her pub once she’d opened her doors and his takeaway was heartening. “I don’t have anything to tell you,” he said, “except you’re doing a great job.”

Growing to Serve Collierville

• Educational Support: Annual donations to the Collierville Education Foundation, empowering teachers and students

• Community Engagement: Ongoing support of over 20 local community organizations through donations and volunteer hours

• Offering free financial knowledge and advice to community members and organizations

Maroon Brew Co. is housed in a strip mall at 642 W. Poplar, just east of Old Byhalia Road. The 4,800 sq. foot building once held Thomas Meat and Seafood, which proved helpful since the tall ceilings and welldrained floor at the back suited her needs. She also appreciated the location,

“Besides the Square, there’s not as much on this side of Collierville,” she says. “It felt good to be in the heart of town.”

BUILDING COMMUNITY

Since their opening, Maroon Brew has built a loyal following. Photos of patrons who belong to the Maroon Mug Club line several walls. Emerson offered customers a chance to buy their own mug and take part in club specials, like $5 beers on Wednesdays. The cost for membership was $100 and was limited to just 100 members. When she posted the notice, Emerson really had no idea what kind of response she’d get. So when she pulled into the parking lot that day and saw a line of patrons wrapped around

the building, she couldn’t help but tear up. Community is an important part of Maggie’s life. Since she’s a triathlete, she coaches youth sports. And she’s a 2025 class member of Leadership Collierville. Because her faith is also important, she’s teaching her children the value of giving back. For every glass of Lori’s Lemonade the pub sells, Emerson puts aside 50 cents. At the end of the month, she tallies the sales and her 8-year-old daughter decides which community organization will receive their donation. Thus far, recipients have included the Collierville Animal Hospital and Orange Mound Outreach Ministry, among others.

“It teaches her stewardship and how to be a good community member,” says Emerson.

As we finish our conversation, a couple who’ve been dining at the neighboring table offer an unsolicited thumbs-up. “I love your place,” says the young woman with a broad smile. “Great beer!” adds her husband.

For a small brewpub owner, it doesn’t get much better than that. ■

Where Elegance meets Every Day Living

“As both a financial advisor and a proud supporter of The Farms at Bailey Station, I believe it offers a truly unique and valuable opportunity for those planning for the future. Over the years, I’ve advised many families on the importance of securing long-term financial stability, particularly in preparation for the increasing and uncertain costs of healthcare in retirement. I believe in it so deeply that I chose The Farms for myself.

For me, it’s more than a smart financial choice—it’s an investment in peace of mind, lasting security, and a community of friends. Just as importantly, it brings comfort knowing I’ve planned for my future—so my children won’t have to make those decisions on my behalf or carry the financial burden. The Farms is a special place, and I’m truly grateful to call it home.”

Staying Connected

For 43 years, John Adams has been the guiding hand at Russell’s Farm Supply

Small business owner John Adams has held just one full-time job in his life: Managing the Russell’s Farm Supply Company on Center Street. He learned the business from his former boss, James Russell, who also served as Collierville’s postmaster years ago. In 1982, at the tender age of 23, Adams and a partner bought Russell’s business and never looked back.

Adams says he was always drawn to agriculture and farming, he even ran his own cow/ calf operation on 200-acres for many years. The farm supply store helped him stay connected to a life he’s loved.

During those early years, 80 to 90 percent of the store’s customers were farmers, folks busy raising cattle and hogs. When money was scarce, they could buy on credit at Russell’s. Some in Collierville still remember those days — back when livestock outnumbered residents. But gradually, those farms gave way to subdivisions and Fortune 500 companies like IMC, FedEx’s World Trade Tech Center and Orgill Inc. Russell’s shifted, too. Now they serve hobby

farmers and gardeners. They still sell feed and seed, though largely to horse owners as well as folks who keep goats and chickens.

Walk inside the store and you’ll find every gardening tool you could need to succeed: watering cans and insecticides, potting soil and owl scarecrows, bedding plants and shrubs and mulch and much more. Customers often give a shout out to Russell’s on social media, showing off their fall mums or Christmas trees. And they stop by with their kids in tow just to pay a visit to Popeye, the store’s green parrot. He loves peanuts and has seen several generations of kids pass through.

“There’s lots of pieces to keeping this place afloat,” Adams says reflecting on his business. “There’s the nursery side: plants, trees, mulch, concrete …” His voice trails off as he overhears a conversation at the front desk and saunters out of his office to help a customer looking for sod, a big seller each spring.

Adams has always led by example, never asking an employee to do what he wouldn’t

Every HERO

needs a mentor, every mentor needs a

GUIDE.

do himself, be it loading cars or cleaning the chicken brooder — because you can still buy baby chicks here. In his office, lined with catalogs and calendars and cranky computers, you’ll also find the time clock his 14 employees punch every day.

“There’s not much new and innovative around here, and I’m getting too old to change now,” he muses. “But I’ve raised a lot of boys. I wish I’d written down the names of all the boys I’ve raised. Everyone needs some guidance and structure.”

The example he sets has also attracted solid employees over the years. Adams felt particularly blessed in the early ‘90s when he hired John and Eileen Fox. John became his right-hand man after being laid off from his job at Malone and Hyde. Adams initially

gave him a job to tide him over but Fox wound up managing the store for 30 years, and Eileen, fondly known as the Plant Lady, handled their annuals and perennials.

“The Foxes were a huge part of the business,” he says. The couple’s tenure ended when John was diagnosed with cancer four years ago. “This is the first spring they haven’t been here — and we’re missing them.”

Over 40-plus years, the cattlemen who once bought feed here have moved on, but long-standing customers still morph into friends. When one passes, “it’s like losing a member of the family,” says Adams. “You learn a lot yourself — but you also learn a lot by listening to your customers.”

The couple’s three children, now in their 30s, are settled into their chosen fields. They

POPPZ Go the Sodas

Jennifer Purnell created POPPZ, a speciality soda fountain

MY ORIGIN STORY

My then 14-year-old son discovered there were stores like ours while doing research on real estate in Utah. Speciality soda shops are popular out west but when I realized we didn’t have anything similar here in Memphis, I expanded the concept. I then learned Carriage Crossing was holding a Pop Local Contest. Their management company wanted to help launch new businesses by offering contest winners three months of free rent and $5,000 in start-up funds. So I jumped at the chance and — Woo-hoo! —POPPZ Drinks and Sweets was named one of the winners in 2023. We opened July 2024.

WHERE WE DO BUSINESS

We’re at the Shops at Carriage Crossing, next door to Carrabbas restaurant. We serve great soda drinks as well as grab-and-go sandwiches, not to mention our delicious, triple chocolate chunk cookies that feature three types of chocolate. So gooey good.

WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE

POPPZ serves flavored sodas which use Pepsi and Coke as their base, but we also create drinks that are based on more Southern offerings, like sweet tea and lemonade, and, of course, coffee. Some of our syrups are created in-house: Juliet is a combination of POPPZ own lemony-limeade mixed with lavender and butterfly pea syrups. Romeo uses Diet Dr. Pepper as its base and adds vanilla syrup with coconut cream. We can also add different fresh fruits or sparkling water to a beverage. Other “dirty” sodas feature a splash of cream, flavored syrups and/or fruit.

EXPANDING OUR HORIZONS

In addition to offering food and drinks at our shop, we do pop-ups at special events and put together catered box lunches for companies like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Memphis and Shelby County Health Department.

THE ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT

I like food. I started my career in the restaurant world, then I became a corporate girl for 15 years. But I’m also the mom of three boys, so you could say I’m used to wearing many hats. My other businesses have included a cleaning service and a nail salon. I’m currently working on a drive-through concept I hope to open in the Medical District of Memphis with help from Proof Incubator. ■

Making Each Occasion Special

Candy Craig of CJ Lilly Flowers and Gifts prides herself on the personal touch

If you’ve ever stepped into Candy Craig’s gift shop — CJ Lilly Flowers and Gifts — then you know it’s brimming with jewelry, Collierville tee shirts, candles, and — ah, yes — beautiful floral arrangements. Candy’s been a small business owner on Collierville Square for 25 years and prides herself on bringing a personal touch to the people they serve every day.

“We try to make it as easy and pleasant for customers by taking care of them and doing what we can to meet their expectations. We do that well here,” she says proudly. “Whether it’s a happy or sad occasion, we try to make it special.”

Her brick building has long been a flower shop, going back 50 years or better, when the Strong family sold floral arrangements and bridal gifts here in the 1970s. In fact, Craig learned that it was Mr. Strong who dug out the entire lower floor of the building (one hopes with some assistance), removing the muddy earth bucketful by bucketful. Strong would likely be pleased to know that the cedar-lined

refrigerator he built on that floor is still going strong. It holds fresh flowers that come from around the world: Alaskan peonies, California roses, orchids from Columbia and lilies from Ecuador and beyond.

Candy started the shop working alongside her sister, Jennifer Reith (hence the name CJ Lilly), though Reith now runs The Sewing Store on Houston Levee. The sisters were raised by entrepreneurs: her mother was an artist and freelance floral designer and her grandmother ran The Beehive, a quilt store in southern Alabama. “We’re all artistic and crafty.”

Teaching responsibility via the family business is one benefit she passed down to her two sons, now in their early 20s. They spent many hours in the store as kids, helping the staff by running errands, sweeping up and

driving during the busiest times of year, Valentine’s and Mother’s Day.

“My 21-year-old son Harrison still comes home and helps to deliver during the holidays,” she says.

The shop provides flowers for all occasions, be it proms or funerals, birthdays or weddings. With weddings Craig is selective, since she wants to be certain their work is a good fit for each bride. They also assist the Chamber, creating floral arrangements for business luncheons and special events.

“I appreciate networking with a community of like-minded professionals,” says Craig. “We try to support our locally-owned businesses.”

Like any business owner, Craig has experienced peaks and valleys over the years. The challenge is “being able to adapt to the

market and change the way you’re doing business.” To cut expenses, they pared back their delivery range which “has allowed us to have the business and volume we want while keeping our local clientele happy.” She also pivoted during Covid, keeping the lights on by sending employees home and soloing for a time, arranging and delivering bouquets of hope to people’s doorsteps. “Flowers are a luxury, so you must realize that people are making choices.”

Today, traffic remains steady. “Customers know they can find good, fresh quality products here,” Craig says. “We have kind, helpful employees and people can count on us regardless of the occasion.”

Many small retailers struggle to compete against online shopping. “I worry that we’ll wake up one day and all the small businesses will be gone,” Craig says thoughtfully. “And we’ll be mad about that,”

But Craig remains hopeful that the personal touch small companies provide will never go out of style. ■

Lawyer At Your Service

Your Boutique Firm owner

Yetunde Aird

MY ORIGIN STORY

I was born to Nigerian parents, immigrants who came to the U.S. as students to attend college. Both received advanced degrees and today, my father is a professor of economics at the University of Memphis and my mother is a retired pharmacist from Walgreens. My parents paved the way for my success and I am grateful for their sacrifice.

WHY I CHOSE TO STUDY LAW

I started talking about becoming a lawyer during high school. I always enjoyed reading and wanted to learn about the law. I wanted to know more about the changes and effects the law can have on society.

THE LEGAL SERVICES I OFFER

I opened my virtual business in January 2025, though I’ve been practicing law for 11 years. I manage estate planning, divorce, personal injury, and family law cases. I was raised in

Memphis but received my law degree from Indiana University where I also earned a bachelor of science in finance. I started my practice in Indianapolis after doing personal injury law as part of a larger firm. While I relocated with my family to Memphis in 2020, I am licensed to practice in both Indiana and Tennessee. My husband and I moved to Collierville in 2023 with our two young daughters.

I AM MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT ESTATE PLANNING

I tell my clients, it’s better to be proactive rather than reactive. Ask your spouse, an adult child or a friend you trust who would be willing to help oversee the financial and personal details of your affairs. It’s important to make sure your wishes are carried out once you pass on, since dividing your estate can become chaotic when that information isn’t available. I want people to understand why it’s so important to have estate planning.

CONNECTING WITH OTHER BUSINESS OWNERS

Being a Chamber member has been a big plus, the organization is very inviting. They host meetings and hold special events that enable professionals to network with others. I’m also a graduate of Leadership Collierville, which gave me a lot of insight into how our community operates. I’m interested in taking on civic duties. I want to help wherever I can.

MY BEST ADVICE

Don’t be afraid of getting a law degree, even if you become the first attorney in your family, as I was. I stand on the shoulders of my parents and grandparents, even my greatgrandparents. I also have the support of my husband. It takes a village. It also takes grit and a strong work ethic, since there are a lot of unknowns. But practicing law and owning my own business is worth the effort. ■

On Thursday mornings, the Storytelling Room at the Lucius E. and Elsie C. Burch, Jr. Library in Collierville pulses with energy. Babies bounce, toddlers toddle, and caregivers settle in for a beloved tradition: Tiny Tots Storytime. As Ms. Cyndee leads a roomful of little learners through stories, songs, and movement, it’s easy to see the library is more than a place to borrow books — it’s where Collierville’s youngest are first introduced to the joy of learning.

“Our Tiny Tots Storytime is one of our most well-attended programs and consistently fills the room, whether it’s during the school year or summer,” says Julia Trumpy, youth services manager at the Collierville Burch Library.

And therein lies the challenge. While families are welcome to drop in during the school year, the summer months bring such a surge in attendance that the library has to implement a ticket system — limiting each session to 20 children. Even then, the space often becomes overcrowded and uncomfortably warm, especially for families with babies in tow.

With a 40 percent projected growth in the

preschool population over the next four years, Library Director Lisa Plath says it’s time to prepare:

“One of our top priorities is to make the library more appealing and accessible to Collierville’s growing population of young children.”

GROWING TOWN, SHRINKING SPACE

The Collierville Burch Library, built in 2001 as a 27,000-square-foot facility, has not kept pace with the town’s growth. At that time, Collierville had 33,300 residents. Today, it’s almost 54,000. And while library visits have soared, the footprint remains the same.

“The visiting population of the library, compounded by town growth and projected trends, does not meet the square footage recommended by Tennessee state standards,” says Julia Webley, president of the Friends of the Library, a nonprofit that champions library advocacy, community engagement, and fundraising.

The need for space becomes more pressing during popular events, like visits from Mr. Nick’s

Dino Crew or beloved children’s author Jan Brett. Often, staff must turn people away or seek other venues. “We had to contact three different locations before finding one available and willing to host the Brett visit for a weekend,” Trumpy recalls.

A VISION DEFERRED

The conversation about expanding the library began more than a decade ago, with a conceptual design first presented by Haizlip Studio in 2015. In 2023, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BMA) approved a revised design by Michael Walker of WalkerArch. This updated plan proposed a larger footprint for the children’s and teen areas, several new meeting spaces, and a 300-person event center.

However, when construction estimates came in at $14.5 million, several aldermen requested additional information before moving forward. As of early summer, a final design plan had not been approved.

However, $8.4 million has been set aside in the town’s savings for the expansion — $5 million earmarked in 2018 and another $3.4

million added in 2024. Those funds, drawn from unassigned reserves, are not tied to the recently proposed property tax adjustment. That adjustment, an increase to $1.61 per $100 of assessed value, is in response to statemandated “rollback” on property taxes, which dropped the tax rate from $1.84 to $1.49.

“There’s a misconception that the library expansion is tied to a tax increase. It’s not,” says Webley. “This is a long-term investment from savings, set aside specifically for this purpose.”

By the time this publication goes to print, the BMA will likely have chosen one of three library expansion options—each differing in scope and cost, but all designed to meet the community’s growing needs.

“At this time, additional funding for the library project is not in the FY26 budget” says Collierville Mayor Maureen Fraser. “There is a possibility of amending the budget mid-year,”

REIMAGINING THE LIBRARY

If approved, the redesign would address more than just space. It will modernize and

reconfigure the library. Key priorities of the proposed expansion include:

• Expanding the children’s area and lowering bookshelves for better accessibility

• Creating a dedicated teen zone and improving technology to enhance programming

• Adding more meeting and study spaces to support learning and collaboration

• Developing a flexible, multi-use event center that can accommodate up to 300 people “We see tutors and students looking for quiet collaboration areas all the time,” Trumpy adds. “But space is limited and often fully booked weeks in advance.”

The Halle Meeting Room, the library’s only large space, holds just 40 people. “We are in desperate need of a community meeting space,” says Webley. “Nonprofits and small businesses need room for continuing education, workshops, and collaborations.”

Plath agrees. “We envision a true center for lifelong learning — that means a place for toddlers discovering their first book, teens exploring their passions, and adults seeking growth.”

THE LIBRARY’S LEGACY

At the April 28th BMA meeting, public support for expansion was clear. Parents shared stories of children who found their love of reading through early literacy programs, teens who studied at the library, and readers with learning disabilities who found confidence thanks to audiobooks and specialized programs.

“The level of engagement we saw at that meeting shows just how essential the library is,” says Trumpy. “With more room and adaptable space, we could expand programs to serve even more people in meaningful ways.”

Libraries are often called the heart of a community. If so, Collierville’s heart is beating faster than ever. Webley emphasizes the expansion isn’t just about bricks and mortar. “It’s about legacy, inclusion, and future-readiness,” she says. “Libraries don’t just house books, they house opportunity.”

“We are building for the next generation,” echoes Plath. “Collierville is known for excellence in education — and a strong public library is a big part of that.” ■

Patriot Bank Student of the Month award shines a light on Collierville High’s best and brightest

What do a foreign language ambassador, a track runner and a thespian have in common? All are Collierville High School seniors who have excelled in their interests and received recognition for their efforts, thanks to the Patriot Bank’s Student of the Month award. Teens like ESL ambassador Brandon Hernandez Diaz, track leader Ava Lang and theatre member Samantha Fuller reflect the diverse pursuits students at Collierville High experience during their time there.

Principal Roger Jones says Patriot Bank officials approached him several years ago about sponsoring the Student of the Month award. To identify each nominee, guidance counselors review the scholastic and extracurricular involvement of senior class members. Those teens selected are not just academically gifted but have also excelled in a one or several facets of school life, be it athletics, band, and chorus, or robotics, aeronautics, and theatre. “All of the kids who’ve won are so different,” says Principal Roger Jones. “It’s amazing.”

“People don’t understand what high school looks like today,” he adds. But thanks to this award, “Chamber members get to hear about the types of activities our students are involved in. We’ve got a CNA program, a pilot’s program, welding, veterinary science — you name it, we’ve got it.”

Patriot branch manager Dee Clark believes the monthly recognition is a good way to acknowledge high achievers and remind all students that hard work does pay off.

“It’s an eye-opener,” notes Clark. “The students are brilliant and involved in so many activities.”

On the day of the luncheon, parents and grandparents attend and sit at the bank’s table. In addition to giving each winning student a medallion, the bank opens a savings account and deposits $100 to kickstart the savings process.

“Knowing the types of students who attend Collierville High and where they are going gives us hope for the future,” says Clark. ■

Ryan Wooden creates individualized medications at Collierville Compounding Pharmacy

Dr. Ryan Wooden was drawn to pharmacology because he wanted to work with both his hands and his head. He spends several mornings a week in the lab at his small business, the Collierville Compounding Pharmacy at Poplar and Poplar View Parkway, using his knowledge in math and biochemistry to calculate drug formulations. He mixes base ingredients, which include powders and solvents, then pours the substance into a mixer that resembles one you’d find at a soda fountain.

“If a patient has a prescription we’ve never done before, we must do the math to determine the right volume and strength for the medication,” he say. “That’s why we have scales and mixing stations, to ensure the most accurate dosage possible.”

Compounding, the art of customizing medicine, goes back hundreds of years. This is how medicines were produced long before the era of approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administra-

tion (FDA) and the rise of mass manufacturing of drugs by pharmaceutical companies.

“We operate under a different protocol than manufacturers operate because we’re not a manufacturer. We’re doing prescriptions based on each individual’s patient’s prescription,” notes Wooden. “I still use a mortar and pestle to mix some substances. Sometimes, the old ways are still the best way.”

Though he also uses modern technology including a 3-D printer.

When you have your prescription filled at the local pharmacy, you receive a pre-made drug. A compounding pharmacy tailor-makes medications using FDA-regulated ingredients so as to meet the unique medical needs of the individual patient.

Why would you turn to a compounding pharmacy? Because Wooden can create a different delivery system for your prescription or make a dosage specific to your needs. Take

nasal sprays, for example, “If you need an antibiotic nasal spray or a steroid in a specific dosage, I can control the Ph and salt content for a better experience,” says Ryan. Another example he gives is for those who can’t take Premarin progesterone, “since the pill’s coating is made from peanuts. People come here because ours are made from yams.” In fact, all of his products are hypoallergenic.

Ryan opened his business in 2023. He had worked at several pharmacies after earning his doctor of pharmacy degree from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 2011. He did a residency with Baptist in 2013 but found the experience frustrating since he spent more time haggling with insurance companies than serving customers. After gaining more experience, he decided to go out on his own. The process took a year, largely because of the licensing involved.

One added benefit of having his own

company is being able to work alongside his father, who is also a pharmacist and an employee. On this day, they puzzle over how to redo a suppository which hasn’t congealed properly. Observes Wooden, “some things don’t come out the way they’re supposed to.”

The products Wooden can produce include topical pain and skin care creams, weight and hair loss products, bio-identical hormone replacement therapies, and low dose Naltrexone, among others.

“We also carry ivermectin, which was used during Covid for antiviral activity. Some people are still using it to keep from getting Covid, though it’s still debatable as to whether it’s effective,” he points out. The state of Tennessee legalized the drug for over-the-counter use.

While Wooden doesn’t accept insurance, some insurance plans will pay for a compounded prescription with the necessary information. Most patients pay for their pre-

scription upon pick up.

The meds he makes aren’t just for people. He can also treat animals, be it cats, dogs, ferrets, even reptiles. He remembers one customer who brought in a bearded dragon which had been struggling with an infection. When he was treating the reptile, “The biggest challenge was figuring out what kind of flavoring a bearded dragon would like,” he says with a laugh. While Ryan did successfully create the medication, “I never did hear whether it worked.” His veterinary products include meds for Cushing’s Disease, pain management, and congestive heart failure, among others.

Ryan has five employees, three of whom are licensed pharmacists, along with two compounding techs. He’s is confident that as people come to better understand the benefits of a compounding pharmacy, his business will grow. ■

A More Beautiful You

Smiley Medical Spa owner Brandi Fly

MY ORIGIN STORY

I opened my medical spa — Smiley Aesthetics Medical Spa - Botox & Weight Loss Clinic — in October 2023. I’m located in the office plaza behind Rockhouse Live on New Byhalia Road. I initially traveled to individual’s homes hosting botox parties but soon realized I’d rather have clients come to me where I could offer a broader range of services. I’d been a nurse for almost 20 years but in my mid-40s, I returned to school and earned a masters of science in nursing online from Chamberlain University. I worked for four more years as a family nurse practitioner. I remember thinking, “I’m going to be turning 50 and starting a new career!” But now that I’m a small business owner, I wish I’d done this a whole lot sooner.

WHAT I OFFER AT SMILEY AESTHETICS

I was in need of a medical director to provide oversight and sign off on patient charts. Since Smiley Aesthetics is a bigger company based in Nashville — headed by twin sisters Mary Smiley Ford and Dr. Carla Pierson — I receive the benefit of being my own boss coupled with the financial support of being under a broader business umbrella. The company provides a medical director and helps to pay for some of my equipment, like the Scarlett SRF microneedling device I use to improve common skin issues.

As Smiley Aesthetics, I offer a range of services — from facials, chemical peels, hair restoration, and fillers to micro-needling, hormone replacement therapy, and weight loss. I also have personal experience with using Zepbound, an injectable prescription medication offered for weight loss. I found it calmed my cravings and the food noise I expe-

rienced. I was pleased with the results. I lost 70 pounds over eight months and now maintain my weight with a weekly injection.

I always stress the importance of getting enough protein when taking weight loss medications, because the meds cause you not to want to eat and you lose muscle mass as well as fat. Improving your overall nutrition and pursuing a more active lifestyle is also crucial when using these products. You won’t lose weight if you don’t put in the work to maintain it.

MY GO-TO SERVICES

Botox and lip fillers are the most popular services I provide. But bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is also often requested by women experiencing fluctuating hormone levels during perimenopause and menopause. I do extensive lab work-up with the patient and their labs would have to show that they need hormone therapy before providing that treatment.

CONNECTING WITH OTHER BUSINESS OWNERS

My connection with the Chamber has helped me with networking and getting my company’s name out there. I’ve met so many people that I wouldn’t have met if it hadn’t been for Chamber events. To build my customer base, our company uses social media, posting in shopping groups and offering monthly specials.

BEST PART OF MY JOB

At the end of the day, I wanted to do more patient care. I wanted to take my work to the next level. I love watching my client’s face when they see results. I love hearing those stories about how they’re feeling better. We all want to look and feel our best. When I’m doing a procedure and someone becomes relaxes enough to begin snoring, then I know I’ve done my job. ■
