VERBATIM Jonathan Lee Riches, a.k.a. Jihadi Schitz, filed a handwritten lawsuit this week claiming rights to half of the Powerball jackpot won by the Robinson family of Munford.

“I am the actual true winner of the Powerball jackpot,” Riches wrote. “For the last 2 1/2 years, while I was incarcerated, I was pen pals with Tiffany Robertson. She was a fan of mine and a Facebook follower, and she wrote me dirty letters, which I have as evidence, and she said she wanted to marry me when I get out of prison. Tiffany told me that no one on this Earth treats her better than me, and then I sent her $20 from my prison trust fund account and told her to use the money for Powerball tickets, because if we win, we will leave America and live on a remote island full of milk and honey.

And I told Tiffany to give my money to her parents Lisa and John Robinson to buy Powerball tickets because they couldn’t afford to buy. And they promised me if they won any Powerball, I am entitled to half the winnings.”

Riches is a recidivist criminal whose hobbies include getting arrested and filing frivolous lawsuits against famous people like Kim Kardashian, who allegedly took his virginity.

MATA plans trolley return but says buses remain first priority.

While the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) is building a trolley system “that will never allow anything unsafe to happen again,” its leaders say they are working even harder on procuring new buses to replenish its aging fleet.

Two weeks ago, the Memphis City Council approved MATA’s purchase of a fully restored trolley that looks identical to MATA’s familiar, larger trolleys. The price tag was just north of $950,000, but the council also allowed MATA access to its full, current-year trolley budget of $2.25 million.

MATA president Ron Garrison said the move will leverage the $2.25 million into the equivalent of $11 million to purchase three or four trolley cars, after a set of funding maneuvers through state and federal channels.

Limited rail trolley service could begin again here, he said, with a couple of trolleys working in conjunction with the trolley buses. Those buses could be retired if MATA had 10 rail trolleys up and running, Garrison said.

MATA has the resources to rebuild or buy “nine, maybe 10” trolleys at present, he said. To operate at full capacity, the Memphis trolley rail system requires 20 trolleys.

Trolleys are just one piece of the overall fix for the Memphis rail system. The other pieces are parts of the rail system itself. Garrison said since the trolley system was closed in 2014 after two trolley cars caught fire, MATA has repaired and upgraded portions of the trolley tracks, the catenary lines that run over the trolleys and provide them power, and power stations along the entire rail system.

Tom Shadyac launches new talk radio show on KWAM. “Tell Me More” with Tom Shadyac, the Ace Ventura director-turned-philanthropist’s new KWAM radio show, goes live in one minute.

Shadyac is searching around the floor for a black University of Memphis baseball cap. “It helps keep the headphones on,” he says.

Eureka! The hat is at his feet. He hurries and buries his long, curly, salt-and-pepper hair beneath it — bulky, black headphones covering his ears. “30 seconds, T,” Shadyac’s manager and co-host Harold Mintz says through his lip-hiding mustache (The last time he shaved was for his grandfather’s funeral almost 40 years ago.).

I wrap headphones around my head, and, adjacent to Shadyac and Mintz, listen along to the dwindling seconds of a syndicated newscast. The anchor comments on the GOP’s criticism of President Barack Obama’s first-time U.S. mosque visit. “Can you believe that?” Shadyac says as he looks to Mintz and the handful of University of Memphis students gathered in the room.

They are writing questions about their inner-struggles on the back of notecards. Shadyac will review these and answer them on the show, which is loosely structured and centers on open-ended dialogue.

Mintz raises his hand. His pinky falls. His thumb follows.

Then it’s his ring finger and middle finger. His index folds back into his palm. We’re live.

priorities. His 2001 documentary I Am asked the question: “What’s wrong with the world, and what can we do about it?”

His former Sirius XM radio show “One Big Couch” continued that dialogue with guests and listeners. But after relocating from Malibu, California, to Memphis, Shadyac localized the conversation with a shift to AM radio. He aims to transform the radio paradigm by becoming the listener.

“All learning happens from listening,” Shadyac says. “I think very few people today are really listening. We want to tell each other things rather than be vulnerable and open up to learning.”

When I expressed interest in writing about the show, Shadyac pointed to his guests across the table — students from his U of M Storytelling and Life course. “Make it about this, not about me,” he said. The show hinges on his guests, he insists.

“That edifies me,” Shadyac says. “It helps me to grow.”

KWAM 990 broadcasts “Tell Me More” from the second floor of the Soulsville New Town Center, across the street from the Stax Museum of American Soul Music. To the left is the 79,000-square-foot building Shadyac recently purchased for $3.2 million in an effort to transform the community.

KWAM President George Bryant said the show is not only unique to the station — but also to anything else on the radio.

“It demonstrates the power of the spoken word and storytelling,” Bryant says.

At it’s core, the show circles around the “hero’s journey,” what Shadyac refers to as the mutual adventure people share and shape through life. For Jamie Arena, the show’s sound engineer, “Tell Me More” is simply Shadyac’s U of M class for the masses.

“I think his mission is get people to tell their stories, so that he can listen with an open heart and spark a conversation by reflecting a perspective back to them,” Arena said. “‘Tell Me More’ may be aired out of Memphis, but the principles spoken of are universal so that listeners everywhere can gain something from the conversation.”

Over the past few months, members of the Memphis Bus Riders Association (MBRA) and others have voiced frustrations on the perception that MATA has prioritized trolleys over buses.

“Just last month a bus was burning on the news,” said Cynthia Bailey, MBRA co-chair. “You only get so many favors from these legislators, and I’m afraid they’ve been spent getting funds for the trolleys. We don’t see any fiveyear plan to get millions for these buses like they’ve done for the trolleys.”

Garrison said he’s aware of the criticism, but he said that as hard as MATA is working on getting trolleys, the agency is working even harder to purchase new buses, calling that project “our main goal.”

MATA needs about 55 new buses for its fleet, an order that would cost about $24 million, Garrison said. To get there, Garrison said he’s talked with Mayor Jim Strickland about the need and will soon meet with individual city council members. Also, MATA is investigating new sources of funds to buy the buses.

funds annually for blight remediation, and he thought those funds might be able to help support the program.

Kevin Kane, CEO of the Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau, said his organization would offer some financial support as well.

“We have visitors who come here from all over the world, and they’re often alarmed by our aggressive panhandlers,” Kane said.

But Kane cautioned that some panhandlers around town are part of a network of people who aren’t actually homeless, and he advised that the program should include some way to screen out people who don’t actually need the services.

Girata told those at the summit that, when he first moved to Memphis, he was struck by all the “No Panhandling” posters in downtown windows.

“Rather than punitively saying ‘You can’t do that,’ why don’t we give them an option instead of panhandling?” Girata asked.

Calvary will host a follow-up meeting on Wednesday, February 24th at 4 p.m. for homelessness agencies, business groups, downtown stakeholders, and anyone who would like to help support the program.

What if, instead of giving panhandlers a dollar or some spare change, we gave them a day’s work? That’s what Calvary Episcopal Church is proposing with a new program aimed at getting panhandlers off the streets and into odd jobs picking up litter or clearing out weeds.

Earlier this week, Calvary hosted a summit for area homeless agencies, business leaders, and government officials in the hopes of gaining both financial support and a commitment from city and county leaders to partner with them on their Willing to Work Memphis program.

Willing to Work would be modeled after a successful program in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in which a volunteer drives a van around town picking up panhandlers and offering them temporary work provided by that city’s public works department. Those who participate make $9 an hour. Since Albuquerque’s program launched last September, 17 participants have transitioned into full-time jobs, and 11 people have been enrolled in mental health services.

The Rev. Christopher Girata of Calvary Episcopal said a similar program could be launched in Memphis for $150,000, which he said would cover the cost of the van, gas, lunches, and storage for participants’ belongings (and even pets) while they work. Ideally, Memphis’ public works department would identify work sites, and payment for the day’s work would be donated by partnering agencies.

“No one agency or church needs to shoulder this burden alone. We can do it together,” Girata said.

He said some aspects of the program would require city or county oversight, such as how to handle background checks for the temporary workers and training for the van driver to be able to “roughly evaluate a person’s capacity for employment.” He recommended that drivers not Breathalyze potential workers but rather determine sobriety by monitoring a person’s behavior.

At the summit, Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland and Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell both voiced support for the program. Strickland said he’d talk with the city’s public works department about the proposal. Luttrell said the county appropriates

Trump Is No Pussy MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE — Give this to Donald J. Trump: Whatever his ultimate fate as a candidate for president of the United States, he can be credited with expanding the boundaries of what is publicly sayable by someone seeking that high office.

The Manhattan-bred billionaire’s previous contribution to the political vocabulary was his use of the adjective “schlonged” to describe the defeat administered by Barack Obama to Hillary Clinton in their contest for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

That piece of Yiddish vernacular — long familiar to anyone who, like Trump, grew up in the environs of New York and now equally well known to the nation at large, denotes an activity of the male genital organ, of course. It was inevitable that — fair and balanced as The Donald strives to be — he would eventually do equal duty by the female anatomy.

And now he has — appropriately enough, at the, um, climax of his last major address of the New Hampshire presidential-primary season, before a huge audience of media and supporters in the cavernous Verizon Wireless Arena of the state’s capital.

For anyone who has not yet seen a video-clip of that

henceforth-to-be-memorial moment, here’s a brief transcript of what Trump had to say as his stream-of-consciousness speech moved him to recall being chided by Clinton and Jeb Bush about his “tone,” which reminded him of a moment of reticence on rival Ted Cruz’s part during this past week’s Republican presidential debate.

TRUMP: “They asked Ted Cruz a serious question: ‘What do you think about waterboarding?’ and, I said, OK, honestly, I thought he would say, ‘Absolutely.’ And he didn’t. He said, ‘Well …’ You know he was concerned about the answer because some people ...”

Distracted by a woman supporter in one of the front rows, Trump interrupted himself. Pointing to the woman, he said, “She just said a terrible thing. You know what she said? Shout it out, because I don’t want to say ...”

WOMAN: “He’s a pussy!”

TRUMP (chuckling): “OK. You’re not allowed to say … and The Donald in Manchester

I never expect to hear that from you again. She said … (mock scolding ) … I never expect to hear that from you again…” (crowd now chuckling along with him) ... She said, ‘He’s a pussy!’”

What ensued from the crowd, not all of whom had heard the interloper distinctly, but all of whom now heard Trump loud and clear, was first shock, then awe, then delight, then pandemonium and chants of “TRUMP! TRUMP! TRUMP!” It was Trump’s latest Gettysburg moment in his campaign to Make America Great Again.

Granted, Trump was only repeating what his supporter had said, and he went through a tonguein-cheek moment of propitiating potential critics with a mock “reprimand,” but when he playfully asked, “Can she stay?” and the crowd bellowed its approval, he smiled broadly in satisfaction.

So, okay, the battle lines are now clear on an issue, perhaps the defining one, of Trump’s campaign — that of political correctness. Go ahead and heap on some other terms: social correctness. Verbal

Win or lose, the New York billionaire has expanded and democratized the language of politics.

• Up until Saturday night’s debate, I had thought there was a fair chance of Trump’s being overtaken on the Republican side in New Hampshire by Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who entered this last week of the primary on a roll after finishing third in the Iowa caucuses (won by right-wing poster boy Cruz) and coming close there to catching Trump for the silver.

That was before Rubio and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie did their impromptu version of a well-known Washington Irving short story, the one in which schoolmaster Ichabod Crane has been dazzling everybody as a fine young dandy until village bully Brom Bones, played in this case by Christie, runs him right off the reservation.

Maybe that’s overstated as a comparison to the verbal pummeling Christie, obviously desperate to keep his own diminishing hopes as a suitor alive, gave to Rubio on the score of the latter’s talking points, rote-sounding to the point of self-parody, but it was pretty brutal.

But there was a serious point to the mayhem, which Christie duly made. And that was that the GOP field’s three governors — Christie, John Kasich of Ohio, and Bush of Florida — were all seasoned in actual administration rather than in the kind of parliamentary fencing that both Rubio and Cruz were skillful at.

Up to now the gubernatorial types have been puffing hard trying to stay

• As for the Democrats, they should really take heart that they have two candidates with significant followings, Clinton and

Bernie Sanders, and that Thursday night’s debate between the two of them, beginning with such blazing dissonance, should end on a note of genuine respect.

When I saw Bernie at a rally at Great Bay Community College at Portsmouth on Sunday, it was precisely what I expected — an overflow crowd not only composed of today’s youth (lots of them) but one leavened by graying ex-hippies.

Pundits compare Sanders to the charismatic Obama of 2008 or even, in his populist appeal, to Trump. He is neither an inspiring New Thing like the former nor an exciting celebrity scofflaw like the latter. He is a bona fide

revolutionary with a program that is authentically socialist — free college, state-supported medical care, living wage for all workers, sticking it to the too-big-to-fail corporations.

A program of reform that attacks economic inequality directly and isn’t, like so much liberalism of the present, siphoned off into purely social issues.

Still, Hillary, the former first lady, senator, and secretary of state, has IOUs and a skill-set that shines through in extended give-and-take sessions like one I witnessed at New England College in Henniker and are built for the long haul. We’ll see.

In a campaign based on the most broad-brush attitude imaginable toward political issues, it is Trump’s iconoclasm that stands out. Be it ethnic groups, war heroes, disabled persons, gender equities, or linguistic norms, Trump is dismissive of all protocols.

He arrived late for Monday night’s address, marveling at the sight of thousands crammed into the arena on the night of what he, more or less accurately, had called a blizzard, one which, he said, had caused at least seven accidents outside.

He boasted of his upscale, successful friends and of what he, and they, along with his supportive hordes of ordinary folks, could do to change the country.

He had his wife Melania, a former pinup model from Slovenia, say, in her heavily accented voice, “We love you in New Hampshire. We together will make America great again.”

And then, at the close of his remarks, mindful again of the weather on this primary eve, “I want to finish up, because you’ve got a bad evening out there. You have to do me a favor. I don’t really care if you get hurt or not, but I want you to last ’til tomorrow. So don’t get hurt!”

Kasich inevitably talks a good civicsclass game in public, and, after attending a Bush town hall on Sunday morning, I found myself more impressed with his comprehensiveness than I had expected to be. (He even acknowledged the reality of man-made climate change in response to an attendee’s question.)

Constitutionally ordained calendar of a national election every four years, and only every four years, necessitates the prolonged period of advance testing our would-be leaders are forced to go through. It also provides a means whereby outsiders have time to convert themselves into insiders.

And it works for both sides of the political dividing line. Small-town Democrat Jimmy Carter was able to break into what had been a preserve of big-state establishments and urban bosses, and his successor, Republican Ronald Reagan, came from the other direction, as a self-made man from the entertainment world into a hierarchy long controlled by corporations. This year’s candidate field has yielded even stranger prospects — of a TV celebrity on the GOP side and a bona fide (democratic) socialist on the Democratic side.

Ironically, Donald Trump’s own colossal fortune allows him, for better or worse, to circumvent the wishes of his party’s corporate elite, and Bernie Sanders has employed the simple force of ideas and the nickels and dimes of a mass following to make the special interests of his party pay heed. And, if they don’t succeed, whichever two candidates eventually become their party’s nominees will have been influenced by these two outliers.

It’s a messy process this year, to be sure, but then it always is. And, arguably, it works as well as anything else that has so far been dreamed up.

election year, usually by people who maintain that all the fuss and bother are unnecessary — that a presidential campaigns is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury and signifying nothing.

We don’t deny that an idiot or two may be in the primary mix this year, along with a surplus of blowhard rhetoric. But that’s the point of these endurance contests. Presidential primaries are the boot camps of American democracy. Whether by conscious design or not, they go on long enough to winnow out the pretenders, to root out the unfit, and to expose and expunge fringe candidates and fuzzy philosophies.

The process usually works out that way, anyhow — although the advent of omnipresent social media have arguably taken everything to an extreme, replete with hasty judgments and complicated tangents. But in the age of Citizens United, the handheld media also offer the best — perhaps the only — corrective to outright control of things by a moneyed oligarchy.

The difference between the American political system and most of the regimes in other countries that also call themselves democracies is rooted in the very wear and tear that critics of the process deplore. We do not — as, say, Great Britain does — allow for a change of leadership based on haphazardly scheduled and quick-running special elections or on votes by party caucuses. The

Donald Trump is using popular entertainment tropes to boost himself into the White House. speaking his “truth” to the establishment has rarely, by itself, changed anything.

Another version of this mass-entertainment fantasy exploited by Trump features the tough, massively armed lone hero — think Die Hard, or most Schwarzenegger films — who triumphs against murderous hordes, be they terrorists, criminals, or foreign armies. In her 1993 book, Hard Bodies, Susan Jeffords laid out how these action films of the 1980s meshed beautifully with both Ronald Reagan’s cowboy image and his foreign policy stances, and came to stand for a vision of our national character as “heroic, aggressive and determined.” As Trump proclaimed in a recent Republican debate, “We need toughness.

We need strength.”

Trump also relentlessly promotes the delusion that stereotypes are true and thus should guide our public policies.

For most Americans, entertainment and news media are the primary sources of information about Arabs and Muslims (two groups that are often conflated).

What they see, overwhelmingly, are both groups portrayed as terrorists.

As the author of a 2013 study on stereotypes in video games put it, “Being an Arab video game character is almost synonymous with being a terrorist.”

Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States draws from this stereotype to present the illusion that racial profiling is a simple way to keep us safe. Add the proposal to “take out the families” of terrorists and you have a strategy straight from the Godfather movies.

These media-driven, macho fantasies are clearly providing sustenance to some, given the size of Trump’s rallies and his standing in the polls. But they are also why, according to the most recent polls from Wall Street Journal/MSNBC, 56 percent of Americans have a “somewhat negative” or “very negative” view of him; for women 18-49, the “very negative” ratings are 58 percent. In the real world, when politicians pervert “truth telling” to propose violent and hateful policies, fantasy can morph into nightmare.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says that if he had been present for the Paris terror attacks, he would have personally shot the attackers.

“I’m licensed to carry,” he explains. “If I were there, if somebody were there, if we had some firepower in the opposite direction, those people would’ve been gone.” Such shoot-from-the-hip rhetoric, which has swollen Trump’s poll numbers, has defied conventional wisdom about what you can let your id blurt out on the campaign trail.

Much attention and analysis — too much — has been commmited to the bizarre phenomenon of a bombastic, selfpromoting reality-TV star and real estate mogul capturing Republican primary voters’ hearts by spurning traditional scripts. But that’s the point with Trump.

We need to think about him not through the frameworks of politics or how the mainstream news media cover current affairs. Rather, we must recognize that Trump is a canny performer who taps into enduring fantasies Americans have imbibed for decades — not from the news or political talk shows, but from TV, movie, and console screens.

Too often we forget how political values are embedded in and advanced by what passes for “just entertainment.”

Some of these values are progressive, others quite regressive, but a persistent trope is that there are simple solutions to complex problems.

One incarnation of this fantasy, a noble one, is about politicians speaking truth to power and, in the end, redeeming national politics. This is the Mr. Smith Goes to Washington dream, in which James Stewart takes on the press (to one reporter, “Why don’t you tell the truth for a change?”) and corrupt politicians, filibustering for truth and decency on the Senate floor and shaming a colleague into confessing his wrongdoing. An impressed radio commentator casts him as “one lone and simple American holding the greatest floor in the land. What he lacked in experience, he’s made up in fight.” Only an outsider could see and speak the truth.

A more recent version of this fantasy was Warren Beatty’s 1998 film, Bulworth, in which a corrupt politician, thinking he’s about to die, spouts obscenity-laced raps about almost every injustice he sees — from the mass incarceration of black men to the need for socialism — and experiences a spike in his popularity as a result. While these media dreams, which Trump both channels and perverts, speak to our better angels, a lone hero simply

Miles Tamboli

Miles Tamboli 27 – Scorpio – Single Through his work with the Girls Inc. Youth Farm, Miles Tamboli trains girls to be young entrepreneurs.

Girls ages 16 to 18 handle everything from farming to pricing to market research for their 10-acre industrialscale farm in Frayser, which sells produce to local restaurants and at the Memphis Farmers Market.

Tamboli is putting the finishing touches on his 500-square-foot tiny house in Binghampton, where he also raises chickens and bees in his backyard.

What did you eat for breakfast today?

Kale from the farm and eggs from my chickens, with smoked peppers and pork belly.

What’s your favorite dish in Memphis?

Ms. Girlee’s has an incredible soul-food lunch special on Fridays. Greens, boiled okra, catfish — really dynamite stuff.

Where do you get your news?

I get a lot of time out in the field to listen to NPR. What’s the most embarrassing song on your iPod? I haven’t touched my iPod in five years. It’s probably just all Lil Wayne.

What’s your idea of a dream vacation?

It involves hammocks and fresh seafood and lots of scuba diving.

Valentino Infante 29 – Gemini – Married Originally from the Canary Islands, Valentino Infante relocated to Memphis three years ago by way of Miami (where most of his family lives). By day, he’s in charge of the radio program call centers for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. But his true love is surfing, and he catches waves in Miami every few months when he flies home to visit family.

A green smoothie and eggs. The smoothie had spinach, wheatgrass, vegetable protein powder, and water.

A self-described “Renaissance man,” Eso Tolson dabbles in all sorts of artistic endeavors.

He’s graphic designer by trade, and if you’ve seen the Choose901 “Embrace Your Inner Memphis” tee or the “Let’s Stay Together” light pole banners along North Main, you’re familiar with Tolson’s work. He’s also part of a musical group called Artistik Approach, performing everything from a cappella to hiphop to soul funk fusion.

Savannah Bearden is perplexed.

“Why have we never thought to do the ‘Break-Up Show’ on Valentine’s Day before?” she asks. It’s a good question.

The “Break-Up Show” is an annual comedy showcase dedicated to everything awful about dating and entanglement.

What are the lovelorn to do while all their coupled-up friends are out enjoying candle-lit meals and being mushy?

Unlike most comedy shows, the “Break-Up Show’s” material is all built exclusively around true stories of love gone bad and really embarrassing found text. Audiences get especially upset if a show doesn’t include at least a few dramatic readings of high school break-up texts.

“This is going to be a greatest hits show,” says Bearden, who promises that high school break-up text messages will be on the menu and appropriately dramatic. “We’ll also have a couple of very special, very horrible Valentine’s Day date reenactments and tons of the creepiest OKCupid submissions you’ve ever seen.”

The “Break-Up Show” has evolved into a multi-media event in the spirit of classic Saturday Night Live. Interspersed between all the sketches and comic bits, there are also short films and live musical performances. The house band is called the Glitches and brings together a tight cadre of Midtown musicians assembled for one reason only: Yacht Rock. That’s right, fans of musical smoothness, unless Rupert Holmes comes to town, the “Break-Up Show” may be your only opportunity to ever hear a live, non-karaoke version of “Escape” (aka the piña colada song).

“If you like Valentine’s Day, this isn’t a show for you,” Bearden says. “This is for all the people who dread this weekend.”

This week the International Jewish Film Festival is serving up some tasty cinematic treats inspired by deli food, baked goods, apples, and a whole lot more. The 10 showcased films include a healthy mix of documentaries and feature films on everything from family to football. Here’s a quick survey of the three film and food fans won’t want to miss.

You can just look at Jerry Stiller and tell: Now there’s a man who knows where to find a good deli. The 88-year-old comedian and father of Ben Stiller is just one of the many corned beef connoisseurs interviewed for Deli Man, a documentary about the rise and fall of traditional Jewish delicatessens and a profile of some of the last and brightest lights in the business. What you’ll see: gorgeous plate lunches and sandwiches so tall they require a “jaw adjustment” to eat, piled with mounds of house-prepared meats. What you’ll hear: stories from the trade about everything from family recipes to customers who can tell when the matzo ball soup is too salty just by looking at it. It’s a feast for the eyes, ears, and soul.

(Sunday, February 21st, 5:30p.m. in the Belz Social Hall at the Memphis Jewish Community Center) Dough is an unlikely buddy movie and comic glimpse behind the scenes in a Jewish bakery. Jonathan Pryce plays Nat Dayan, a down-on-his-luck baker searching for a way to revitalize his London bakery. The key to his success turns out to be Ayyash, a teenage Muslim refugee from Darfur who accidentally drops a bag of marijuana into the challah dough. Next thing you know, the customers are lining up. Jewish mothers who worry about their sons playing such a violent sport. Fresh Start for Familiar Rockers Noel Clark and Alicja Trout discuss their latest project.

including openers JJ Freeze (featuring Jeremy Freeze, Jeff Hulett, and Lost Sounds’ John Garland) and headliners Manateees. I sat down with both Alicja Trout and Noel Clark to find out more about the recent past, present, and future of Fresh Flesh.

— Andrew Earles Memphis Flyer: Besides Alicja’s long and colorful resume, what bands and backgrounds make up the other members of Fresh Flesh, and how did the current lineup come together?

Noel Clark: Luke played in a punk band called $7 Sox. Eric right now plays with Hosoi Bros. I guess

I didn’t really play with anyone locally. I moved around and played with a couple of bands in and after college but nothing anyone would have heard of. I went to college in Jackson, Tennessee, then moved to Memphis in 2008. Daniel Drinkard was my roommate for a while, and he played bass in the band before moving down to Birmingham and opening his record store. This is the first band I’ve been in in which I was responsible for the songwriting, so at first I just sat down and wrote the guitar parts. Then Daniel and I got together with Josh McLane, who does a lot of comedy and plays with a two-person band called the HEELS,

resh Flesh is the latest local band to feature the guitar and vocal work of Memphis polymath, Alicja Trout, best known for being one half of the now legendary Lost Sounds as well as other notable bands including Black Sunday, Mouserocket, River City Tanlines, and her solo work as Alicja-Pop. Adding to this list, Fresh Flesh debuted live last November, capping off a year that, for Trout, included several Sweet Knives shows (the post-Jay Reatard so far live-only reemergence of the core Lost Sounds lineup to play Trout’s 1999 – 2005 contributions to that band) and some live activity by way of the River City Tanlines and Alicja-Pop. Unlike these endeavors, however, Fresh Flesh was formed by other musicians and had been practicing and recording under various incarnations by the time Trout was approached about providing vocals and guitar to the songs the band had already written.

Formed around the songwriting core of drummer Luke Stubblefield (former member of $7 Sox and Angel Sluts as well as cousin to Lucero’s bassist, John Stubblefield) and guitarist Noel Clark, Fresh Flesh originally featured Fat Sandwich Records proprietor Daniel Drinkard on bass, a position now assumed by Eric Fortenbery (also of Hosoi Bros). Also in an earlier lineup when the band was laying down demos was Josh McLane, now known for his work on the Memphis comedy scene and his “Don’t Be Afraid of the Comedy” series of events.

Live, with Trout on additional guitar and handling all of the vocals, Fresh Flesh’s lean but dynamic noisepop is akin to an updated take on ’90s luminaries like Velocity Girl, That Dog, and especially the Breeders.

It’s an instantly memorable and perfectly unflashy formula that all four members seem comfortable presenting as if the band has far more live gigs behind it than it actually does. Aside from the November 2015 live debut mentioned above, Fresh Flesh played its second show at the Hi-Tone on the 23rd of last month. Fresh Flesh will make its third live appearance as a part of a February 13th three-band lineup

and we recorded some of the songs. That gave Alicja something to listen to, and the fact that she was interested in contributing to it … well, that sort of resulted in a dream team of people coming together in the current lineup. Luke’s an amazing drummer, and Eric’s a great bassist, so it was an ideal situation.

Alicja Trout: Luke approached me last year about singing on some of the recordings they’d already laid down. Noel and Luke had been playing together for a while with Daniel Drinkard on bass, but he moved away, and they got Eric in the band. I liked what I heard, and we started practicing, and I added vocals to the recordings. The lyrics had already been written, but I tailored some of them to fit my point of view a little better. There are nine or 10 songs recorded at this point, and these are all just about finished, aside from some correcting of the vocal tracks.

Are there plans for the recordings?

Trout: Not officially, but we’d like to shop them around and see if anyone would be interested in releasing them as seven inches. They’d make a good three seven-inch EPs…three songs per record.

Clark: We’d like to add to anything that’s left over and put together enough for a full-length at some point later this year.

Alicja, any other musical plans at the moment?

Trout: Fresh Flesh is where I’ve dedicated most of my musical energy as of late, but soon there will be a full-length LP of my solo recordings as Alicja-Pop released by the Certified PR label.

Beyond the show on the 13th, are there any Fresh Flesh live plans in place for the rest of the year?

Clark: We’re going to keep booking live shows locally. Right now, and depending on what everyone in the band can do, there are some short weekend trips we want to do over the summer, maybe after we get some more songs down.

Nothing Says “I Love You” Like Loud Music.

Plenty of bands — both touring acts and locals — are packing in clubs all over town this weekend for Valentine’s Day. Forget the flowers and candy, here are three very different shows worth checking out with your significant other. From shoe gaze to metal to garage rock, there should be something for just about everyone.

Friday, February 12th Before the latest crop of bands like Manateees, NOTS, or Aquarian Blood, the Oscars represented the “Goner scene” of Memphis garage rock. Made up of Chuck Wenzler, Sam Burnett, Scott Patterson, and Abe White, the Oscars played Memphis often, performing their off-kilter, always-weird garage punk in unconventional places as well as every dive bar in town. After a long hiatus following Burnett’s departure from the country, the Oscars are back with a show at Otherlands Friday night. — Chris Shaw The Oscars at Otherlands, Friday, February 12th, 8 p.m. $6 Saturday, February 13th The Finnish institution known as Children of Bodom is one of the higher profile bands to expand upon a musical backbone of melodic death metal over the last two decades. The band has maintained a sizeable fan base for its unique hybridization of melodic death/black metal and other strains of the steely stuff like power, neo-classical, and traditional heavy metal.

Children of Bodom formed in 1993 and released three demos under the name Inearthed in as many years before switching to the former moniker prior to the release of 1997 debut album, Something Wild.

Since 1997, the band has centered around guitarist/vocalist/lyricist/cofounder Alexi Laiho, drummer/backing vocalist/co-founder Jaska Raatikainen, classically-trained jazz pianist Janne Wirman on keyboards and backing vocals, and Henkka Seppälä on bass/backing vocals. The debut album made an immediate impact in the metal underground by elevating the keyboard to a lead instrument, packing catchiness in the riffs and chord progressions, plus Laiho’s fretboard fireworks and showmanship on the stage.

Across subsequent albums, a formula was honed to worldwide success that saw less busy song structures and an organic shedding of abrasive elements. The more melodic and less cluttered Children of Bodom, with the help of incessantly touring their memorable live show, would make the band’s third album, 2000’s Follow the Reaper, the first to hit gold certification in Finland. It has since been certified platinum, and the band’s seven subsequent albums have achieved gold status in the

band’s homeland, making them one of the country’s best-selling artists. Children of Bodom’s ninth album, I Worship Chaos, was released last October by Nuclear Blast Records. — Andrew Earles Children of Bodom and Havok, Saturday, February 13th at the New Daisy. 8 p.m. $17-$25.

Sunday, February 14th Local recording studio 5 and Dime has started throwing shows around holidays like Halloween and Christmas, and the gigs mostly feature bands that have worked in the studio, or are loosely associated with it. The 5 and Dime Valentine’s Day Show features Switchblade Kid (5 and Dime founder Harry Koniditsiotis’ shoe-gaze/punk band), Wray (Birmingham, Alabama), and new local band Margins. Featuring members of Burning Sands, New Intruders, and Wooden Mouth, Sunday’s show will serve as the Margins’ debut.

Wray play Murphy’s on Valentine’s Day. Birmingham shoe-gaze band Wray have played Memphis before with Switchblade Kid, and they’ve been picking up momentum since releasing Hypatia this year on Communicating Vessels records.

The Memphis show wraps up a threeday tour for Wray, so the band’s shoe gaze-meets-psych-rock music should be road-tested and ready to rip. Rounding out the bill is the curator of the evening, the Switchblade Kid. The band will be debuting their new video for the song “(I’m Leaving) The Death of Love,” a track Konidsiotis called his “goth opus.”

“In some respects ‘(I’m Leaving) the Death of Love’ is ‘Static Bombs 2’ [Koniditsiotis released a video for the Switchblade Kid song ‘Static Bombs’], but what I love about these outtakes are the mistakes, cars passing, dead flowers, cemeteries, and statues that capture the background of growing up ‘Goth’ in New Orleans in the ’90s,” Koniditsiotis said. “I didn’t know any actors, so I asked my friends to be the stars.” — CS The video for “(I’m Leaving) the Death of Love” will be screened during the show.

JUCIFER AT THE HI-TONE The husband-and-wife duo of drummer Edgar Livengood and guitarist/ vocalist Gazelle Amber Valentine have been making and releasing music as Jucifer for over two decades. Formed in 1993 and initially based in Athens, Georgia, the band is allegedly named after the “The Juice is Lucifer” statement made during the O.J. Simpson murder trails. Jucifer was, over its first few years of activity, marketed by various labels as a more “indie” or “alternative” offering, and their sound during the second half of the ’90s occasionally danced with this blanket assessment, albeit in a loud, abrasive, and metallic fashion. Having developed into something that, more often than not, truly defies classification on the whole, Jucifer is nonetheless tagged as sludge or doom metal to avoid unpacking the complex reality of the duo’s stylistic mastery and invention within the context of all that is heavy, perpetually intense, and inventive, not to mention unpredictably melodic and catchy.

The succinct and, it’s assumed, band-generated wrap-up of what to expect on record and live goes like this: “23 years of annihilating ears and insides.

Genre = Obliterate. Sludge, doom, grind, thrash, death, crust, black, combined.

Notoriously nomadic, live in their tour bus. ALWAYS ON TOUR.” The duo has seen its seven full-lengths, five EPs, and two DVD titles released by Relapse Records, Alternative Tentacles, and, at one time, major-label subsidiary Capricorn Records (via that imprint’s relaunch around Y2K). Additionally, the band’s own Nomadic Fortress Records handles certain release formats. Jucifer has only gotten better at everything they do since the release of their 2006 debut for Relapse Records, If Thine Enemy Hunger (album No. 3 overall). arry Thompson knows how to throw a party.

In fact, he’s so good at it that his neighbor asked him to come bartend for him, and for two and a half years, Thompson helped keep the party rolling at his neighborhood bar, Newby’s.

Life went on for Thompson. He graduated from the University of Memphis, moved to Boulder, Colorado, and opened his own business, a hot wing delivery place, South Mouth Wings, that stayed open until 3 a.m. and raked in the dough.

In the meantime, Newby’s closed on November 19, 2014 — a dismal day for his former neighbor, Todd Adams, and the numerous Newby’s devotees, until Thompson got word that he might could help bring Newby’s back to life.

By August he had sold his hot wing business and was back in Memphis.

After several months of moving bathrooms, opening up alleyways, installing garage doors, and landscaping, Newby’s is back on the University District map and has a whole new outlook (and much of the same heart).

“We tried to give it a facelift while doing as much as we could to keep it the same,” Thompson, 29, says.

Perhaps most importantly, the bathrooms are no longer in an alleyway.

“Girls don’t care about how cold your beer is. They want to know what the bathroom is like,” Thompson says.

The brand-new bathrooms are now conveniently situated in the southwest corner of the establishment.

Thompson installed an entirely new kitchen, one expanded further back with a walk-in cooler, new ventilation, and a keen pizza oven.

“I have a super pizza oven. It cooks the pizzas so fast. I’m in love with our pizzas,” Thompson says.

Much of the menu is the same with a few enhancements and some fine-tuning.

“It’s bar food with a twist,” Thompson says. “We’re really more aiming for speed.”

They still offer their Ribeye Sandwich but with blue cheese butter and horseradish mayo on a brioche roll. The Triple Bypass made the cut, with eight ounces of Angus burger, ham, turkey, bacon, Swiss, cheddar, and a fried egg.

And it wouldn’t be Newby’s without the MCS, the chicken breast marinated in the Newby’s secret sauce (which if, as stated on the menu, you “ask nicely, [they’ll]

probably tell you”. Oh, and you can find Willy’s Chili too.

Thompson brought in Jeff Johnson, of Local, Agave Maria, and Oshi Burger acclaim, to consult with him on the menu and to help train his staff, which numbers close to 35, and just figure the ins and outs of the new Newby’s.

“I worked at Newby’s for about nine years. I trained Larry. When he opened his business in Boulder, I went out there to help him open,” Johnson says. “I’ve helped him train his kitchen staff, work up the menu, and with cost analysis.”

As far as the menu goes, they wanted to honor the 40-year-old institution that Newby’s became.

“We’re not reinventing the wheel. We wanted to go back and pay homage to the old menu, but we shaped it up and made it a little nicer. It’s good food items with great ingredients done well. We use fresh ingredients, and hand-cut and hand-bread our chicken tenders and portobello fries.

It’s fun, quick, and easy bar food with quality ingredients.”

“I wanted to surround myself with the best of the best on my team,” Thompson says.

Other changes include moving the

back patio indoors to the front of the building where Thompson installed a garage door, which he opens seasonally; a media wall with four large, flat-screen TVs; and the latest in serving draft beer, the Bottoms Up Beer Dispensing System, where beer is poured by fitting a plastic cup with a hole in the bottom onto the dispenser and then is held in place with a magnet.

“There is no waste, and it’s fast,” Thompson says.

Thompson says he’s happy to be a part of the Highland Strip renaissance taking place in his old stomping grounds, and welcomes all the activity.

“We’ll be getting a steak restaurant, and with Loeb buying all of this property and fixing it up, it’s going to be like Overton Square.

“November 19, 2014, was a horrible day. It was like a funeral. There was so much love for this place. I had the opportunity to come in and save it, so I’m going to do as much as I can to keep it the ‘college bar you never graduate from,’” Thompson says.

The Coen Brothers skewer Old Hollywood in Hail, Caesar!

That’s a film critique I never thought I would offer, but here we are.

Like all right-thinking Urban Achievers, I am a Coen Brothers fan—a fanatic, even. Who else has been able to create great films in so many different genres? They’ve produced two great film noirs in Miller’s Crossing and The Man Who Wasn’t There, expanded the crime genre with Fargo and the Best Picture-winning No Country for Old Men, added to the Western legacy with True Grit, and crafted some of the greatest comedies in film history with Raising Arizona and The Big Lebowski. Basically, if Joel and Ethan Coen make a movie, I’m there, no questions asked, because there’s always going to be something great onscreen. This is true even in the case of misfires like Hail, Caesar!

The strengths of their comedies have always been rooted in crackling wordplay, characterizations which walk the line between the wacky and sympathetic, and a burgeoning sense of the absurdity of life. The premise of Hail, Caesar!, an eventful day in the life of an Eisenhowerera Hollywood fixer named Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) seems like perfect fodder for the brothers. If you’re looking for absurdity, Hollywood presents a targetrich environment. Capitol Pictures, Mannix’s fictional studio, is a circus of stars like DeeAnna Moran (Scarlett Johansson), a squeaky-clean protagonist of water ballet pictures whose image is put at risk when she gets pregnant; Hobie Doyle (Alden Ehrenreich), the singing cowboy whose almost superhuman roping and wrangling skills are of no use when the studio thrusts him into the role of a big city swell in Laurence Laurentz’s

(Ralph Feinnes) latest chamber drama; and Frances McDormand as accidentprone film editor. Best of all is George Clooney as Baird Whitlock, the epically vain actor whose kidnapping from the set of his newest sword-and-sandals flick by a group of communist screenwriters who collectively call themselves The Future provides Hail, Caesar!’s plot momentum.

Clooney, rocking the praetorian haircut like it’s 1998 on the set of ER, is loaded for bear, ready to go O Brother, Where Art Thou? big. And that’s what we all want, right? Critics like me have to pay lip service to subtle naturalism, but there’s nothing like seeing a really great actor vaulting over the top, grabbing scenery to chew. But Clooney’s efforts are largely wasted as he ends up imprisoned by the communists for much of the film while the Coens try to wring humor out of mid-century Marxist rhetoric. The basic joke is sound—the commies claim to have scientifically cracked the code of history, and yet they were unable to predict defeat by the capitalists—but the scenes meander endlessly. Clooney’s manic energy should have been at the heart of the picture, but he’s just the MacGuffin.

Let the kidnapped Clooney chew the scenery.

The Coens are operating in Lebowski mode, so the kidnapping plot is just a contrivance on which to hang the comic digressions and character moments that are the film’s real meat. The Hollywood setting allows them to try on different genres every few minutes, such as Channing Tatum’s gay sailor musical number “No Dames,” but too often it comes off as empty riffing. The Coen’s clockwork timing seems broken.

I personally enjoyed Hail Caesar!, but I cannot recommend it to anyone outside the Coen cult. It is their least funny film since The Ladykillers in 2004, but, to be fair, the last decade has seen the brothers occupied with existential dramas like 2009’s A Serious Man. Roger Deakins’ photography is, of course, first rate, and the production design is off the charts good. In a way, Hail, Cesar! reminds me of a mid-period Woody Allen picture, expertly crafted but lacking a certain energy. And consider this: When The Big Lebowski was released in 1998, it was considered a disappointment after the universally hailed Fargo, but time was good to the Dude, and it is now rightly ranked as one of the greatest comedies ever made. Considering the majesty of the Coen’s True Grit remake and the crackerjack work they did on the screenplay for Stephen Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies, maybe the days of the gonzo Coen comedy are over, and the brothers should stay serious.

to have happened with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which started life as a 2009 stunt mashup novel by Seth Grahame-Smith, the mastermind who brought us Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

The combination of public domain intellectual property with the age’s favorite monster briefly caught the internet zeitgeist back in 2009, and now that the book has been thoroughly forgotten, the movie it inspired hits theaters in the doldrums of Feburary. You gotta hand it to a title devious enough to part foolish investors from their money in multiple media. I have seen the future, and it is Snakes on a Plane for everyone!

As the British say, it does what it says on the tin. You’ve got Liz Bennet (Lily James), the smartest of the five sisters, fighting off suitors who can’t respect her free will. Mr. Wickham (Jack Huston), who you think is good but who turns out to be bad, and Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley) who you think is bad but turns out to be good. The members of the aristocratic love triangle court furtively while scything through hoards of undead English peasants unleashed when the zombie virus migrated from the New World.

I’ll hand it to director Burr Steers: He got the tone just right.

When it comes to seriousness, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is somewhere in the neighborhood of the 1966 Batman TV series.

Former Doctor Who Matt Smith steals the picture as the clueless, but pious Parson Collins, serving up massive slabs of ham like he worked at the Blue Plate. Also in on the joke is Game of Thrones Lena Headey as the one-eyed Lady Catherine de Bourgh, the richest

Night of the Living Darcy — proper ladies spar with suitors and the undead in post-zombie England. woman in England who leads the resistance in a final battle against the “ravenous unmentionables.”

The script gets a lot of mileage out of creatively mangling Austen’s prose with lines like “It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains is looking for more brains.” Verbal sparring between Liz and Darcy is accented with spin kicks, because proper ladies in post-zombie England are naturally trained in kung fu finishing schools. The women fight the undead with sword and musketry, and mankind with heaving bosoms and flailing nostrils.

It’s all in good fun, and I suppose there’s a feminist reading of this bizarre concoction. But it’s nothing Buffy the Vampire Slayer didn’t do much better in 1999 or so. Ultimately, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies fails to justify its own existence. It is a shambling mound of undead intellectual property grimly stomping its way through the world, devouring all dumb money in its path. Surely, the next step is a video game, where you can play as a zombie, or Darcy’s horse.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un

Those North Koreans do the darndest things. Now they’ve gone and launched another missile of some sort. Thankfully, this time they didn’t cause an earthquake in their own country, as they did back in January, when they reportedly tested a hydrogen bomb, apparently in an effort to build up an arsenal to bomb the United States. I don’t know exactly why, but I laughed myself off the edge of my bed when I heard that one.

I don’t think I will ever understand why there are people in the world who live just to make other people miserable. Terrorists, gangs, bigots, serial killers — the list goes on and on. Why do some people choose to be horrible instead of just trying to be happy and spread that happiness? It’s a lofty thought, and the world is an incredibly complicated place, but still, why wake up each day and think of ways to be horrible?

This is one of the reasons I try not to watch the news about the presidential campaign going on (and on and on and on and on and on and on) right now.

I feel bad that I don’t have much interest in it, but I just see it as a pile of goons grandstanding for their own ego-driven interests.

The GOP debates would be entertaining, at the very least, except none of the candidates appear really interested in doing anything to improve society as we know it. They just want to gnaw on each other and come up with “zingers.”

I actually saw a professional television news commentator ask Jeb Bush why he didn’t come up with any “zingers” after one of the debates. Of course, poor Jeb appears to be in a walking coma most of the time, so how would he come up with “zingers?” I did actually crack up when, after Jeb got his mother Barbara Bush to get out and stump for him a little, Donald Trump made fun of him bringing out his mommy and making her walk in the snow. Why is Jeb Bush still even in the election? And who is John Kasich? I keep seeing him in the lineup, but I honestly had never heard of him. I see in my search that he is the governor of Ohio. Is this man really a viable candidate for president of the United States?

And why did the Donald have to go and resurrect Sarah Palin? Why bother her when she is busy dealing with her son’s domestic violence issues and his arrest (all of which she blamed on, of course, Barack Obama)? Why not leave her to her hunting and gathering in the woods? Donald, please don’t make us relive having her on the news a lot. She’s still as gross as she always was, and her endorsement of you didn’t do you too much good in Iowa. Leave it alone, and just tease Jeb about his mommy.

And why the hell does the opinion of Iowans mean so much to the political process? I’ve never understood that one. Iowa is probably the least diverse state in the country. It’s almost all white and mostly rural. I secretly think that no one really lives in Iowa and the campaign people just ship people in for the caucuses during presidential elections.

The whole process is just strange. The people who are reportedly residents of Iowa (I still don’t believe anyone really lives there) gather at local spots in each county, including schools, churches, and individual’s homes (thank you, Wikipedia!). So, to the best of my understanding, all of these rural white people huddle up and try to figure out who they want to win the presidential primary. And they seem to eat a lot of food items that are stuffed. Like big, nasty stuffed flapjacks and fried bread stuffed with cabbage. I feel certain they also indulge in their fair share of Jell-O with canned fruit.

But back to their caucuses, food notwithstanding. They gather and talk about the pros and cons of the candidates, but they do it differently for Republicans than they do for Democrats. Ya think that’s a red flag? And apparently, if there’s a tie, they flip a coin. Fortunately, it’s not just all tater tot casseroles (sorry, there I go again) and secret voting. They actually did give Barack Obama 98 percent of their votes, or delegates, or whatever it is, the last time. But the caucus winner in the Republican caucus the same year was Rick Santorum. Ick. So why Iowa, and, for that matter, why New Hampshire?

Again, approximately 94 percent white. I’m not saying white people don’t know what they’re doing, but why choose almost white-only states for these important elections to reflect the diversity of the country? Why not have the caucuses in New York or California? What am I missing here?

Admit it. Have you ever actually met someone who was from Iowa? I don’t think I ever have. Nor have I ever met anyone from North Korea. I would like to meet some people from these places to get their take on what really goes on there. In the meantime, I’m going to find a way to cast my presidential vote for the late New York Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm.
