Until the lion learns how to write, every story will glorify the hunter. — African proverb The state of Tennessee’s Achievement School District announced this week that it will take over four Shelby County schools for the 2016-2017 school year: Caldwell-Guthrie Elementary, Hillcrest High, and Kirby and Raleigh-Egypt middle schools.

Those schools had scores in the bottom five percent statewide and have been matched with charter school operators that will rename the schools, hire new staff and a new principal, and reformat the way the schools are run. The ASD is the state agency charged with turning around the state’s lowest-performing schools. The way they “turn around” these schools is by giving them to charter school operators. Scholar Academies will take over operation of Caldwell-Guthrie and Raleigh-Egypt Middle, and Green Dot Public Schools will take over Hillcrest High and Kirby Middle.

Memphis has the majority of the state’s “low-performing” schools, which also means more of our tax dollars will be funneled into for-profit education corporations that operate under their own auspices and that are primarily concerned with, well, profit.

But here’s the thing: There will always be a “bottom five percent,” even if all schools are improving, which assures that charter operators will continue to take over five percent of our public schools every year, funneling more public tax dollars into private education companies. Mr. Ponzi would be proud of this scheme.

Parents, teachers, and administrators are almost always against charter takeovers of their neighborhood schools. Long-standing school names, mascots, sports traditions, and academic achievements are lost to history. But these folks don’t get to write their own stories any more. Charter school operators will get to decide who attends their neighborhood schools next year.

A Vanderbilt University study released earlier this month found that Shelby County Schools’ iZone program, which attempts to turn around low-performing schools that ASD doesn’t take over, is actually doing better than the ASD. That study looked at data from the first three years that the ASD and iZone have been in operation and found that iZone schools had made greater gains.

So tell me again why we’re privatizing our schools. Could it be that charter school lobbyists in Nashville have the ears (and wallets) of our legislators? Nah. No one’s denying that many Shelby County schools need improvement. But the real problem was shown again this week by a U.S. Census study that revealed that a third of Memphis children live in poverty. Shelby County Office of Preparedness offers class on surviving active shooter scenarios.

“How many of you deal with the irate public?” FBI Special Agent Tom Hassell asked.

Nearly every hand in the Shelby County Board of Commissioners chambers went up as the room burst into laughter. That room was filled with county government employees from all departments, and Hassell was coleading a class on how to survive a mass shooting. The Shelby County Office of Preparedness offered the class to county government employees last week, just days after 14 government employees were shot and killed in a mass shooting in San Bernardino, California.

In January, they’ll begin offering the free class, which offers tips and tricks for surviving an active shooter situation, to the general public. Individuals can sign up at StaySafeShelby.us for a class on either January 9th or 15th, both at 10 a.m. at the Office of Preparedness. Or groups can register to schedule a separate class.

The county employees in last week’s class may have been

laughing about dealing with an angry public, but Hassell and Captain Perry McEwen with the Shelby County Sheriff ’s Office gave serious advice on what to do when a member of the irate public (or an irate coworker) resorts to gun violence. The pair have been teaching these survival classes together since shortly after the Columbine High School shooting in 1999.

City Council Says Goodbye, Hello Tuesday’s meeting this week was the last for council members Jim Strickland, Wanda Halbert, Bill Boyd, Harold Collins, and Alan Crone.

New council members — Berlin Boyd, Frank Colvett Jr., Patrice Robinson, Jamita Swearengen, Martavius Jones, and Philip Spinosa Jr. — will start work in January.

Darrius Stewart File The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation file on the Darrius Stewart case was released for public viewing on Tuesday.

Last week, Shelby County Chancellor James R. Newsom III ruled that the files should be open but stayed the order until December 15th to allow Memphis Police officer Connor Schilling, who shot and killed the unarmed Stewart on July 17th, time to file an appeal.

Schilling’s attorney had been fighting to keep the report closed to the public, citing a concern that he might be facing a federal indictment and opening the record would jeopardize his right to an impartial jury.

A quick glance at the file revealed multiple witness accounts stating that Schilling and Stewart were wrestling on the ground when Schilling shot Stewart a first time.

Stewart was a shot a second time, in the back, as he attempted to flee, witnesses said.

Liberty Bowl Renovations On Tuesday, the Memphis City Council was scheduled for a vote on a $4.8 million upgrade to the Liberty Bowl stadium that would add about 4,000 new, premium seats (seats with seat backs).

The city would essentially front the funds to the stadium and would be paid back within a year by the University of Memphis.

Midtown Market Project The council was also set to consider this week a plan to transform the corner of Union and McLean into an apartment complex, shops, and, perhaps, an “upscale grocery store.”

Belz Enterprises and Harbour Retail Partners want to build a $43.5 million project called “Midtown Market” on the now-blighted corner.

The project got $10.5 million in tax breaks from the Memphis Center City Revenue Finance Corp. earlier this

Having a “warrior mentality” — an idea that “I will survive, and everyone with me will survive” — is key, Hassel said. He also told the crowd to scout exits and hiding places everywhere they go. But the main takeaway from the class was the maxim of “run, hide, fight.”

“We’re talking worst-case scenario here, like when someone is coming in intent on killing. The best thing to do is run, get away,” said Dale Lane, director of the Shelby County Office of Preparedness. “If you can’t, hide behind cover if possible. And then, as a last resort, already have in mind that you’re not going to stay here and be shot. If your only choice is to fight, then fight.”

Hassell and McEwen emphasized the importance of running as the best option, and they advised to leave behind anyone on the scene who is scared to run. If running isn’t an option, hiding in a room that can be locked or barricaded might be the second-best option. When hiding, cell phones should be silenced, and even the vibration mode should be switched off, they said.

They also advised that, when possible, people should attempt to slow the shooter’s movement, either by locking elevators or even soaping hallways to make the shooter slip and fall. McEwen said that’s a tactic often used in prison riots.

“If you work in a cube farm, you can push your cubicle over to create an obstacle for the shooter,” Hassell said.

As a last resort, they said fighting the shooter might be the only option.

That could mean hitting him or her with a fire extinguisher, chair, or even a broom handle, they said.

Lane said the classes, both the one for county employees and the upcoming public classes, were scheduled before the most recent San Bernardino shooting.

“We started planning this about six to eight weeks ago. The frequency of these attacks have obviously increased over the last year or so, so we felt this was timely,” Lane said. “We were getting some questions from our [county] employees about how they should respond [in an active shooter scenario].”

Lane said he didn’t want the classes to create fear but instead to instill a sense of personal safety and security.

“The whole point is not to scare anybody, but its to have knowledge to prepare,” Lane said. “Knowledge is power, and we want people to have the knowledge and awareness to be planning for these types of things.”

Q&A with Crissy Clements Founder of 4period women’s underwear company.

Memphian Crissy Clements is offering women an eco-friendly, affordable alternative to disposable feminine hygiene products.

With companies like THINX — maker of absorbent “period panties” — popping up, some women are choosing to forego using disposable feminine products in favor of heavily lined underwear with moisture-wicking capabilities. Others are turning to them as a complement to disposable products.

But THINX are rather pricey, and Clements wanted to offer women a cheaper option. So she launched 4period.co, a Memphis-based online retailer of feminine hygiene undergarments. For comparison, a five-pack of 4period underwear costs $60, and a single pair runs $15, while the single pairs of THINX can cost up to $38.

Clements is the company’s sole employee. She took a few minutes to talk with the Flyer about her company. — Alexandra Pusateri Flyer: Why did you start 4period?

Clements: Originally, I wanted to only make [and sell regular] black panties. I ended up getting hooked up with a manufacturer, and I was looking through their catalog for different styles. I found these period panties that were leak-proof. I arranged to get the samples sent, and I fell in love with them.

I was dumping water on them, thinking it was too

good to be true. THINX has been doing this, and they have a little more variety with the styles that they offer. Of course, they have more funding. The problem is they are ridiculously expensive. Even for non-period underwear, I’m not going to pay $24 for one pair of panties. I wanted to offer women a cheaper alternative without giving up on quality.

What makes you different from other companies offering “period panties”?

I wanted to make sure I could provide the maximum amount of protection. My panties can hold half a cup of liquid. There’s front and back protection, which my competitors don’t have. Not selling them in packs is also ridiculous.

The panties are absorbent, so you won’t bleed through your clothes.

What’s next for 4period?

I’m actually hoping to do a bit of charity for incarcerated women. I know they can only get those cheap, cardboard-quality pads and tampons that don’t offer the protection.

Robert Weber had stepped in and out of the Warriors Center multiple times before finally deciding to leave life on the streets behind. He graduated from their one-year program in 2007. Years later, he has no doubt about where he would be now had he not chosen to stay.

“Dead,” Weber said. “I can tell you for certain that I would be dead.”

The Warriors Center, a faith-based program that focuses on addiction recovery and offers beds for the homeless, looks deceptively small from the outside of their building on Semmes in Orange Mound. Step inside, and you’ll find immaculate hallways and meeting rooms, 65 beds, and many people with stories similar to Weber’s.

“It doesn’t matter if every single bed is full,” said Bert Suggs, a graduate of the program who now serves as the director of development. “If we have to, we will line our meeting rooms with cots along the wall, and everyone who’s waiting for a spot to open up will at least have shelter.”

Come Christmas, the center will be rolling out those cots for one of their biggest outreach events of the year.

In addition to providing a free meal on Christmas, they’re also offering a chance for Memphis’ homeless to get haircuts, take showers, have their clothes washed by center residents, and pick up essential winter gear.

Suggs and other residents involved in outreach hope that those struggling with homelessness will come in for the meal and stay for the chance to rebuild their lives.

The center, which gets its name from the military-style structure and ranking system that their residents must advance through, started in the garage of Executive Director David Vincent.

Vincent himself is a turn-around story from a past riddled with arrests and addiction. His final release from jail after numerous felonies resulted in the desire to create a faith-based program in 1999 that would address the needs of the addicted and homeless.

“They come in here, get a hot meal, get treated with respect, and a lot of times they end up staying because they realize, ‘Hey, this seems like a good option. It’s better than being out on the streets,” Vincent said. “We also just opened a women’s program, too, because there is a huge need [for shelter] in Memphis for women experiencing homelessness. We really want anybody who needs a second chance to come in.”

Suggs acknowledges it’s a challenge to keep a facility that sometimes exceeds its bed capacity fully operational.

n 8-year-old boy has heroes. I happened to be 8 years old in 1977 when Star Wars entered our galaxy and changed pop culture in ways no one unfamiliar with a Wookiee could have previously imagined. My heroes in 1977 were not atypical for the times: Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach. St. Louis Cardinals catcher Ted Simmons.

Spider-Man. Paul Stanley of KISS. (The Starchild offered everything the Bee Gees did not. I signed up for the KISS Army long before my parents would have authorized.)

I’d like to think I was no more or less impressionable than my third-grade classmates that year in Knoxville, Tennessee. But I knew a hero when I first met Han Solo. And Luke Skywalker. And Princess Leia.

And yes, R2-D2.

Fast forward (many years, but in a galaxy nearby) to this Friday when The Force Awakens hits local screens and the seventh chapter of the Star Wars saga becomes the most-talkedabout movie event of the year (decade?). I’ll be able to take my own daughters (ages 13 and 16) to see Han and Chewie on the big screen, their views of heroes shaped quite differently from the way I shaped mine 38 years ago. (Can Leia or Rey compete with Katniss Everdeen?) It will make for a cross-generational experience unlike many films can provide a person of my generation.

By the time The Empire Strikes Back was released (in 1980), my family had moved from Knoxville to Southern California. We lived in Vermont when the world was introduced to Ewoks in Return of the Jedi (1983). Staubach had long retired by the completion of this initial trilogy, Simmons was a Milwaukee Brewer, and KISS had removed their makeup. I entered high school with my Star Wars action figures confined to a drawer in the back of a closet. There were times it seemed a monthly Spidey comic was

my only escape worthy of hero status.

But Star Wars never left, we know.

Thirteen days after my first daughter was born in 1999, The Phantom Menace hit screens, and viewers of my generation had to connect the dots between a mop-topped, podracing child ... and the Darth Vader he was destined to become. Attack of the Clones followed in 2002, as did my second daughter (four months later). KISS was back in makeup, Spider-Man reached the big screen (also in 2002), and Albert Pujols did things for the Cardinals unseen since the days of Stan Musial. Heroes were alive and well.

In 2005, the final prequel was released (mercifully, say many in hindsight). In Revenge of the Sith, we saw the final descent (not quite death) of Luke Skywalker’s father, his black mask as familiar a symbol of evil as any Hollywood image before or since.

That same year, my own father died.

If there’s a life event that kills heroes in the heart of a man, it’s his father’s death, the most intimate collision with mortality a human being will experience. I’ve been reluctant to identify anyone — real or fantasy — as my “hero” since my dad’s passing.

But I’ll be in line this weekend.

And like everyone else my age (and millions younger), I’ll anticipate the first appearance (the return!) of Luke and Leia. I’ll relish the comedic (and loving) interplay between Solo and Chewbacca, the best Hollywood tandem since Butch and Sundance.

And I’m looking forward to meeting the new soldiers: Finn, Rey, Poe, Kylo Ren. (And yes, BB-8 is adorable.)

The world is so much scarier today (at least for me) than it was in 1977.

I’m grateful there’s still room for Star Wars. And still room for heroes.

’Tis the Season in Politics, Too Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus — if you happen to be a political junkie. Those whose appetite for the electoral process was not sated by the close of the Memphis run-off races on November 19th have a freshly wrapped gift under the tree — the prospect of fresh voting March 1st, “Super Tuesday,” for which a preliminary deadline of sorts passed during the week.

Last Thursday, December 10th, was the filing deadline for the 2016 General Sessions Clerk’s race, the party primaries which will take place on Super Tuesday, along with presidential primaries for both parties.

The deadline came off as something of a stealth event — save for those individuals directly involved in the outcomes or a relatively few activists in the two local political parties or the really zealous members of Shelby County’s aforementioned political-junkie class.

But, whether or not many people were paying attention or even thinking about it, at the stroke of noon on Thursday, December 10th, the curtain did indeed fall at the Election Commission on applications for the General Sessions clerkship, which is now held by Ed Stanton Jr., who is not to be confused with his son, Ed Stanton III, who is U.S.

(The younger Stanton is involved in a stealth situation of sorts, too. He was appointed last April by President Obama to be a U.S. District Judge at the urging of 9th District congressman Steve Cohen, a Democrat, has been backed for the appointment by U.S. Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker, both Republicans, and easily sailed through a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in October. But his final confirmation vote by the full Senate, along with those of many other judicial nominees, has been snarled in a delay that stems from the continuing partisan gridlock in Congress.)

Drawing a crowd of both local and statewide Democrats at a party fund-raiser over the weekend was visiting U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-New Jersey). Booker is the tall, balding man on second row, just to the rear of Mayor A C Wharton.

Stanton Jr. is regarded as a heavy favorite to be reelected as clerk, though at the filing deadline he had drawn two Democratic primary opponents, Del Gill and William Stovall; one Republican challenger, Richard Morton, and one independent opponent, William Chism.

Stanton is one of two Democratic incumbents who have successfully withstood challenges from Republican candidates in recent years. The other is Shelby County Assessor Cheyenne Johnson. Both were reelected four years ago, in part of an off-year cycle for county officials.

After that 2012 election, the office of assessor was rescheduled in sync with the general slate of county officials, and she was forced to run again in 2014, winning that race handily and leaving Stanton’s position as the only county office scheduled in a different four-year cycle. He will vie for the Democratic nomination with Gill and Stovall on the aforesaid “Super Tuesday.”

Early voting for both the presidential primary and the General Sessions Democratic primary will run from February 10th to February 25th. The winner of the General Sessions primary will run on August 4th against Chism and Morton, who will have been nominated without opposition by the GOP on March 1st.

August 4th is also the date for party primaries for state legislative races.

Amid the holiday festivities, political parties were gathering steam for 2016.

• It’s a fair bet that most political activists have focused more attention lately on the string of seasonal holiday parties that various Democratic and Republican groups have been holding.

Though they certainly play a role in binding the local organizations together, and several double as party fund-raisers, these gatherings, like holiday parties of all kinds, are more about good cheer and a break from routine, or, as was the case with the party held over the weekend by the Democratic Women of Shelby County, the expression of a special tribute to longtime party activist Myra Stiles, whose household has been the traditional home base for the DWSC’s annual holiday affairs.

More pointedly political, perhaps, was the party held on Sunday at the riverfront home of Shelby County Commissioner Walter Bailey Jr. and his wife, Carolyn Bailey. This event featured a national political celebrity of sorts, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-New Jersey), was held to raise funds for the Tennessee House Democratic Caucus, and brought in numerous Democratic Party officials and state House of Representatives members.

The event also enticed a significant turnout from local Democrats — a proverbial who’s who, including Cohen and outgoing Memphis Mayor A C Wharton, a late arrival who got an especially warm welcome. Suggested donation amounts ranged from $2,500 for PACs (Political Action Committees) to $1,000 for party finance council members to $250 for individuals. House Democratic Caucus chair Mike Stewart of Nashville set a goal of $20,000 for the event, and that fairly modest threshold would seem to have been easily met and exceeded.

Booker is one of the Democratic Party’s ascending stars on the national scene. Well aware of the current low ebb of Democratic fortunes in Tennessee, at least numerically, he reminded attendees of the event that he, too, had tasted defeat in his mayoral race in Newark, before finally winning in a second try and beginning his rise.

And he cautioned his audience against fatalism, contending that Democrats continued to prove they had the numbers to win in presidential races and that overcoming low turnout in non-presidential races was the key to an overall political revival.

Presidential politics was a subject much under discussion at Republican holiday events. Typical was the annual Christmas party of the East Shelby Republican Club at the Pickering Community Center in Germantown, Monday night. To judge by the comments volunteered in conversation, celebrity candidate Donald Trump still is riding high, though support was also evident for other candidates, notably Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

Does the new Mayor intend to launch a state-of-the-art news operation as an adjunct to city government? In the couple of years he has served as lead of the politicsand-government reporting team for The Commercial Appeal, Veazey not only resurrected that paper’s cachet as a leading source of political news, he elevated the public’s sense of urgency about public news in general.

A former sportswriter, he brought a statistician’s zeal and a fan’s passion to the business of covering politics. And for the rest of us in the field, he made it fun to compete, and that’s a word — “compete”

— that he gave new meaning to.

Trying to keep up with Veazey in one sense was a lost cause: He had too much energy, too much commitment, and, to be honest, too much of an advantage in exposure to try to out-do. But he also enlarged the scope of the game itself. It wasn’t a zero-sum matter of win-lose. No knee-capping. No screw your buddy. In a way, it was like being in an orchestra. You still had ample play for your own instrument, and it was impossible not to admire the way he handled his.

Now, just what the hell is he going to do in city government that will top that act?

ASD or iZone?

The educational reforms proposed and overseen by the Haslam administration statewide have been both wellintentioned and internally flawed. There is no question that too many public schools in Tennessee qualified for the adjective “failing” in 2011 when Governor Bill Haslam, then newly inaugurated, appointed new state education officials dedicated to pursuing new policies.

Those policies were heavily reliant on standardized testing of student performance, teacher effectiveness, and institutional outcomes, and have met with significant resistance from several sectors of the population that, to say the least, had not previously operated in tandem.

Classroom teachers saw their influence over the educational process reduced by the General Assembly’s simultaneous abolition of collective bargaining, and many of them objected also to the intensified testing regimens mandated by the state, complaining, among other things, that training students for the tests took up time and energy that could be more usefully applied to exploratory teaching methods, that the tests, by concentrating on relatively rote outcomes in specific areas (English and math, normally) shortcut the aims of public education, and that the tests did not measure real learning.

The standardization of the tests, especially under the rubric of Common Core, also earned the distrust of parts of the state’s population who imagined that sinister national forces might be attempting to brainwash young Tennesseans. The two kinds of resistance coalesced into a group of unlikely political bedfellows that forced the state to rethink its commitment to Common Core and to develop a more Tennessee-specific standard.

Another phase of Tennessee’s new educational policy — the creation of a state-run Achievement School District empowered to take over under-performing

schools from the jurisdiction of local school districts — has also met with resistance. This has particularly been the case here in Memphis, which had 69 local schools on the ASD’s “priority” list of institutions that tested in the lower five percent of effectiveness. Of those 69 schools, 31 are among the 33 that have been taken over by ASD, and ASD officials announced last week that another four — Caldwell-Guthrie Elementary, Kirby and Raleigh-Egypt middle schools and Hillcrest High — are due for takeover in the academic year 2015-16 and conversion to charter schools.

State policy permits other options, including leaving the schools under the jurisdiction of Shelby County Schools’ iZone (Innovation Zone) program.

At a press conference last week, state Representative Antonio Parkinson (D-Memphis) brandished a recent Vanderbilt University study showing that iZone schools have achieved better results than have schools administered as charters or more directly by ASD. He promised to introduce legislation in the forthcoming session of the General Assembly to limit or abolish ASD’s prerogatives.

Such legislation will probably have little chance of passing, but Parkinson’s threat should not be regarded as idle. Sentiment against ASD’s procedures continues to build among proponents of locally controlled education, who note that SCS and iZone, unlike ASD, are responsive to an elected school board. Given the results of the Vanderbilt study, it becomes harder and harder to justify authoritarian state policies that override the long-established democratic basis of public education.

To spread lies, fear, and hate are un-American. Being American means setting aside your prejudice and yes, I am suggesting this, getting behind our president, for once.

Let’s make a real effort to stop the name-calling. Like it or not, our world is evolving. It is a dangerous, scary place. But we are in this thing together.

There are no “American roaches.”

There are no “German roaches.” They are just roaches to me. There is no “radical Islamic terrorist.” They are just terrorists.

If we send our troops there to fight without a massive coalition, our enemy will scatter and blend into the environment much like roaches do. We will return home bloodied. Some good people won’t return alive, and we will be left with another costly quagmire in the Middle East.

My new pest control company got to the root of the problem. Maybe our nation’s leaders can follow suit. The roaches are gone. Problem solved. But I remain vigilant, as every American should.

“As a Muslim living in America, I get worried that Mr. Trump’s language and rhetoric might be contributing to the rise of Islamophobia and hate crimes,” says Mustafa Hmood, president of the Muslim students’ association at Christian Brothers University.

“Fortunately, and thanks be to God, the majority of the people here know and understand that terrorism has no religion. Terrorist groups like ISIS commit crimes in the name of Islam, but people know better than seeing them as representatives of 1.6 billion Muslims,” Hmood says.

When I first moved into my cozy condo, located in a quiet, peaceful neighborhood of Germantown, Tennessee, I was in heaven on earth. But I soon had an eerie feeling that I was not alone.

Then it hit me like a thunderbolt when I got up in the middle of the night to get a drink of water. I turned on the kitchen light, and staring at me was a giant cockroach. Most roaches scatter when you turn on the light, but this guy just stared me down, as if it were daring me to do something. This roach was so big I almost offered him my wallet out of fear.

The next day I called the exterminator to get an emergency visit. I was told by a company representative, “Areas with a lot of trees will have roach problems.” In other words, I just had to live with them, which I found unacceptable. The lady on the phone called them “American roaches,” which were harder to kill than the typical “German roaches.”

Call them what you will, but both versions are awful. I don’t have to live with them. Any word that involves the name roach is ugly. It is the same thing with the word “terrorist.”

The recent attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California, have given those with a political agenda an opportunity to exploit fears by insisting on attaching the words “radical Muslim Islamic” to terrorism. I’m just going to assume if you are a terrorist, you are a radical, but calling all Muslims terrorists does a great disservice to the six million American-born Muslims in this country, and to millions of peaceful people who worship Islam.

The subdued nature of President Barack Obama is an affront to Republican presidential candidates and other conservatives, who foam at the mouth as they call for war. Right-wing regulars are seizing on the tragedies to put pressure on the president by asking, “Why won’t he call them ‘radical Islamic terrorists’?” As if semantics were the main concern in this case.

“I think that fear and uncertainty are extremely powerful motivators for humans, certainly including voters, and candidates know this,” University of Memphis political science professor Doug Imig says. This is evidenced by the fact that the events in Paris and now San Bernardino are being used to dominate the 2016 election.

It’s a rainy Saturday in late November. Jerry “The King” Lawler sits in his booth on the dealer floor of the Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention (MCFC), surveying the scene. About a thousand people are crowded into the basement of the Memphis Hilton, browsing tables overflowing with comic books, memorabilia, T-shirts, and handcrafted fan art. The wrestling legend is also an accomplished comic artist, and he’s here to sign his work.

I’m here to talk about Star Wars.

“I’ve got this awesome Chewbacca mug that came out in 1977, when the first movie came out. There’s no telling what it’s worth now, but I wouldn’t sell it for anything,” Lawler says. “I was a huge Star Wars fan, and I am to this day.”

Tonight is the big costume contest, so the crowd is filled with sci-fi and fantasy characters come to life: Harry Potters, Star Trek crew, Spider-Men, Wonder Women, and Doctor Whos in all his incarnations. And, of course,

Stormtroopers, Jedi, and Leias.

“It was probably the start of all of this stuff,” Lawler says. “It was the precursor to geekdom, if you will.”

ORIGIN STORY The first glimpse the world got of Star Wars was in a room at the 1976 San Diego Comic-Con, where Charley Lippincott, the head of marketing for the newly created Lucasfilm Ltd., showed a sparse crowd black-and-white slides of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Three years earlier, George Lucas had directed American Graffiti, a low-budget, sleeper hit about a group of California teenagers coming of age in 1962. For his follow-up, Lucas wanted to do something inspired by the cheap, sci-fi serials he had loved as a kid. He tried to buy the rights to Flash Gordon, but Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis wouldn’t sell. So Lucas decided to create his own outer space adventure.

“George Lucas had one good idea,” says Memphis filmmaker Mike McCarthy, on hand at the con to premiere his new sci-fi serial, Waif. “Star Wars is American Graffiti in space.”

American Graffiti cost $777,000 and grossed $140 million, making Lucas the toast of Hollywood. But by 1976, 20th Century-Fox Film Corporation was $9 million in the hole on Lucas’ badly behind-schedule pet project, which no one but him seemed to understand. By the time it was finally ready, even the director himself thought it would flop.

Star Wars was scheduled to be released on Friday, May 27th, 1977, but when Fox executives found out the competition that Memorial Day weekend was going to be Smokey and the Bandit, they moved the premiere up to Wednesday, hoping they could lure a few people into theaters before everybody went to see Burt Reynolds.

THE SUMMER OF ’77 “Star Wars is my first memory of any science fiction stuff I was interested in,” MCFC founder Joe Thordarson says.

He was one of millions of kids who flocked to the theaters again and again in the summer of 1977. For him, the appeal of Star Wars does not necessarily lie in its fantastical elements. “At the end of the day, you’ve got a lot of ‘normal’ people who are flawed having to step up and do extraordinary things. I think [Lucas] did a great job originally, because it’s not just about the special effects, it’s about the characters. You actually care about them.”

Director Craig Brewer, visiting the convention with his family while on a break from working on a new TV series for Fox, agrees.“There is a very palpable feeling that every child can relate to: feeling like you’re alone, like Luke, the boy on the farm, looking at the double sunset. I think the thing people respond to with Star Wars is the Han, Luke, Leia, Chewbacca, [Cee-] Threepio, and R2-D2 squad.

We didn’t know each other our whole lives, but we just came together at this one moment, and now we’re going to risk our lives for each other. There’s this whole dynamic of personalities amongst these six characters. As a child, you could easily play a type with really clear turf. You be C-3PO, I’ll be Chewbacca, you be Solo, you be Luke. Let’s go out and play. It’s about finding your friends.”

POMO MYTH It’s a cliché to say that Star Wars and its sequels The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983) are a modern myth. It would be more accurate to call it postmodern myth. Lucas was a fan of Joseph Campbell, the scholar whose book The Hero With a Thousand Faces first outlined the “Hero’s Journey,” a collection of story elements shared by texts about Gilgamesh, King Arthur, and Rio Bravo. The entire Star Wars saga is a mash-up, self-consciously constructed out of bits and pieces of older stories and films. In 1977, Lippincott told Starlog, “The story has influences from all over the place. People have pointed out that they see suggestions from Lord of the Rings, Flash Gordon, and Dune. And there are a lot of things from outside science fiction — like the samurai tradition of Japan. … Most importantly, the story relates to legend and fairy tale. It’s what Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen were doing.”

Like fairy tales, the films have become something passed down through generations.“It was very important to me when I had a son that he know Star Wars,” Brewer says. “As I’m reading the opening scroll, I had this sensememory sensation that I had not felt or heard — that almost sounds like a line out of Star Wars — since I was 6.

It was my father, who has passed away, whispering in my ear in a dark theater, reading the scroll from Star Wars to

me. It was one of the most spiritual moments I have had in a long time.”

THE SANDBOX In the heady days of 1977, Lucas was widely quoted as saying he wanted to start a film series “like James Bond” — a sandbox in which different directors and writers could play, adding their own touches to the mythology. He promised a trilogy of trilogies, and for its 1978 rerelease, Star Wars gained a new subtitle: Episode IV: A New Hope.

For Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Lucas enlisted writer Leigh Brackett, a Hollywood veteran whose first screen credit, The Big Sleep, was shared with William Faulkner. Brackett died of breast cancer after turning in her first draft, and the job passed to Lawrence Kasdan, who had just written Lucas’ side project with Steven Spielberg, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Lucas tapped his USC film professor Irvin Kershner to direct the film, which is widely regarded as the best of the entire series.

“Watching Empire with my family recently, nothing beats Yoda,” Brewer says. “I was surprised that my daughter required no explanation when Luke went into the cave that was strong with the Dark Side of the Force, doing battle with phantom Darth Vader, lopping his head off, and seeing his own face in the helmet. She got it at age 7. It starts conversations. Who are you fighting? Who is your real worst enemy? Is it yourself?”

Kasdan returned to write Return of the Jedi, the most financially successful of the original three movies. Lucas devoted himself to running Lucasfilm and its spin-off companies Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) and Skywalker Sound, which not only revolutionized special effects and sound design, but also produced innovations like nonlinear video editing and Photoshop.

But after seeing the computer-generated images ILM had created for Spielberg’s 1993 hit Jurassic Park, Lucas had a change of heart. He would write and direct a new trilogy of films in the Star Wars saga, Episodes 1-3, which would tell the story of Darth Vader’s transformation from heroic Jedi knight to scourge of the galaxy. When The Phantom Menace was released in 1999, it was initially greeted with enthusiasm. But then, a realization set in among fans. It just wasn’t as good. Lucas the filmmaker was now Lucas the toymaker. The thrill was gone.

SCARRED FOR LIFE “It was an impossible task to make 1, 2, and 3,” Memphis comedian Brandon Sams says. “With the majesty of the first three, and all of the comic books and lore, and Lucas hadn’t directed a movie in 20 years, it was just doomed. It was too important to people. But leave it to the fans. There was a whole lot of great fan-created content that came out around the prequels.”

Brandon is at MCFC with his wife, Alexandria, who skipped Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005), because they lacked the scrappy, handmade quality of A New Hope. “Being a loyalist, I didn’t like the CGI. I’m still not a fan of CGI. If there’s not any Jim Henson puppetry and old school art, I’m not as interested.”

She wasn’t the only one turned off by the prequels.

“I got thrown off the track by the introduction of Jar Jar Binks,” Jerry Lawler says. “It scarred me for life, really.”

Even if they fell short artistically, the prequels still did huge business — The Phantom Menace alone has grossed more than $1 billion.

And they created a whole new generation of fans, like Lara Johnson, director of the 2014 documentary Geekland: Fan Culture in Memphis. “I was 10 years old when Revenge of the Sith came out,” she recalls. “My dad had tried to show me Star Wars, but it was just a lot of sand, and I wasn’t into it. My grandmother took me to see the Will Ferrell movie Kicking & Screaming. We bought the tickets, but the print was broken — back when prints were a thing. So my grandmother went back to the ticket counter, and said they needed to give us another ticket, because they sold us a broken movie … And I said, ‘The kids at school have been talking about this Star Wars movie.’ So we watch it, and my mouth was just hanging open the entire time. It was the most magical experience I had ever had. Before that point, I played softball. I was sporty. I was a jock. After that point, I was a geek.”

Memphis actor/director Drew Smith, star of the upcoming comedy Bad, Bad Men and creator of the viral video “Force for Good” starring Mayor-elect Jim Strickland, is at the con wrangling his two sons, Hank, 5, and Jonah, 11, who are dressed as a First Order Stormtrooper and Jango Fett. “Those of us who grew up with 4, 5, and 6 didn’t appreciate 1, 2, and 3 the way this generation did,” he says. “They get it, even if we don’t.

They’re a little bit into it.”

At that, Hank turns and menaces me with his lightsaber. “ALL into it!”

THE FORCE AWAKENS The parade of costumes continues. There are obscure anime characters like Vash the Stampede, and a flock of Harley Quinns, a fan-favorite Batman villain. We’re living in the world Lucas made, but geekdom has mutated into a thousand different subspecies. Surely, I can find someone at the con who doesn’t like Star Wars.

I stop Megan Rook, who is dressed as 1990s alt comic book hero Tank Girl. “I’ve always been into geeky stuff,” she says. “My dad’s a big Star Wars fan.”

Exactly. Doesn’t Star Wars seem like a relic of an older generation? “There are those guys who are like, ‘OMG, I saw it in the theater,’” she says, rolling her eyes. “But I don’t hate it. I’m actually pretty excited about the new movie!”

CUE THE EXCITEMENT Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opens Friday, is easily the most anticipated pop-culture event of 2015. It is the first Star Wars movie in a decade, and the first since Disney purchased Lucasfilm from Lucas for a reported $4 billion. Stung by criticism of the prequels, Lucas retired, leaving the franchise in the hands of producer Kathleen Kennedy, whose credits include everything from E.T. to continued on page 18

phones at Lucasfilm, the word of mouth that started at Comic-Con had reached critical mass. Sci-fi fan magazine Starlog declared, “Star Wars is a legend ahead of itself.” By the end of 1977, Star Wars had grossed $307 million, more than twice as much as Smokey and the Bandit, and 20th Century Fox’s stock price had doubled.

continued from page 17 Persepolis. The film, penned by Empire Strikes Back writer Kasdan, is set 30 years after Return of the Jedi and reunites the original cast of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, and, most importantly for many, Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia.

“Leia Organa is my favorite female character — no, my favorite character, period — in all of pop culture,” Johnson says. “She’s amazing. She watches her entire planet die, and she keeps going.

She can do anything and take it over.”

Johnson says Fisher’s sharp portrayal of the galactic freedom fighter broke open the sci-fi boys’ club and inspired a generation of female characters that included Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley from Alien and Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor from The Terminator.

“They are strong women, but they are also flawed. They save the day in the end, but they have a lot of depth as characters. They’re not just there to be an object to catch.”

A 21-year-old woman named Katie, who, along with her friend

Charlene, is dressed as a character from Mad Max: Fury Road, says “Princess Leia wasn’t like, a damsel in distress. She was like, ‘I’m going to take care of this, and if you can keep up, awesome.’”

Charlene, whose road to geekdom started with Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man, says Leia is a big reason she’s a fan of the “Orig Trig.” “I feel like it’s something every generation likes. There are a lot of little 6-year-olds now who are in love with Star Wars, and my dad’s a huge Star Wars fan.”

One fan from Charlene’s dad’s generation is director J. J. Abrams. The creator of TV series Felicity and Lost was hired by Kennedy to direct the first film of the new Star Wars era after rebooting the Star Trek franchise for Paramount. Abrams’ work on The Force Awakens will be the the first test for Disney, whose stewardship of the franchise was initially met with skepticism by the faithful. But that skepticism melted away after a series of spectacular trailers that have been received by the geek community with something approaching religious awe.

“The new movie is going to be amazing,” says Memphis Star Wars fan page administrator Liza Andersen. “I hate that George Lucas doesn’t have anything to do with it, but I trust J. J. Abrams to do the right thing. I went to Star Wars week at Disney, and it was amazing. When the new park opens, I intend to fall off the face of the earth. I’ll be there in costume, working, and no one will know they even hired me.”

Andersen is not in costume at the con but says she’s dressed as Padmé, the mother of Luke and Leia who was played in the prequels by Natalie Portman. “But,” she says, “I plan on joining the 501st as soon as I can afford a costume.”

BLURRED LINES In the lore, the 501st Legion is Darth Vader’s personal Stormtrooper detachment, known as “Vader’s Fist.”

In real life, it’s an 8,000-member organization of Star Wars enthusiasts who make their own obsessively detailed costumes. Garrison DATE Commanding Officer Justin Bryant 12/14/15 says the Legion is often called upon to make public appearances, such as at the CLIENT recent Memphis Grizzlies Star Wars Southland Parkportion of what we do is Night.

This blurring of lines between fantasy and reality is no surprise to Johnson, whose next film project explores identity in international geek culture. “You see characters that you love, and you want to be them. So you dress up like them. It’s also a good shorthand that helps you meet other people who think like you.”

She says when the fans line up this weekend for The Force Awakens, their excitement will not just be about seeing a new movie, but about returning to a shared universe where they have found their friends. “You don’t have to have Harry Potter to make Harry Potter great. He’s got this whole magical world around him. And Star Wars is the same.

Nobody’s favorite character is Luke.

They love all of the tertiary characters.”

Johnson gestures to the crowded convention floor. “There are 2,000 people here. I’m sure if you asked anyone here if they could jump into their favorite universe, they would do it.”

TSC at the Dixon

It’s exciting to see local companies getting outside their comfort zones and staging productions of Shakespeare’s less frequently produced plays. October found New Moon Theatre Company wrestling with the famously bloody Titus Andronicus. This holiday season the Tennessee Shakespeare Company (TSC) moves into uncharted waters with a rare production of All’s Well That Ends Well, which runs through December 20th at the Dixon Gallery & Gardens.

TSC’s latest undertaking explores the mysticism at the heart of this dark comedy and asks what it means when women undertake the classic, usually masculine, hero’s journey. All’s Well That Ends Well — sometimes described as a “problem play” due to formal irregularities — is inspired by Boccaccio’s sprawling 14th-century story collection, The Decameron. It tells the story of Helena, the low-born charge of Spanish aristocrats with healing gifts inherited from her father. She sets out to marry a young nobleman named Bertram whose appetite for adventure includes a taste for fighting wars and rampant virgin defilement. The clever and gifted suitor, Helena, follows him first to Paris and later Italy in a play chock-full of life-or-death bargains, bed tricks, and faked deaths.

Like the wittier and more frequently produced Much Ado About Nothing, All’s Well That Ends Well lays bare the similarities between love and war. The journey is fraught with trouble and tragedy, but the play ultimately lives up to the promise embedded in its title.

Under the direction of founding executive Dan McCleary, TSC’s latest production is a neoclassical fantasy inspired by the artwork of Maxfield Parrish, an American illustrator whose work is most closely associated with A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Project: Motion at the Woodruff-Fontaine House

Project: Motion dancer and choreographer Louisa Koeppel wants to make your holiday just a little more luminous than it might be otherwise. “It’s been a challenging year,” she says, contemplating the theme to this year’s “House Happening,” Project: Motion’s third annual collaboration with the Woodruff-Fontaine House in Victorian Village. “It’s been challenging for so many people in so many ways, and if we can bring a little bit of light and lightness through our medium of dance, then we’re happy.”

The theme to this year’s happening is “All Is Bright.” In addition to their illuminating performances, Project: Motion will move beyond the four walls of the 19th-century mansion-turned-museum to spotlight pathways and backhouses. “We’re treating the main house as a portal to the rest of the grounds,” Koeppel says. “We want to shed light on the carriage house, the root cellar, the gingerbread house in the back, and more of the grounds.”

Audiences of not more than 60 per show will split into groups and receive docent-guided tours through three revolutions of the house and grounds. Along the route, they’ll encounter works by Koeppel and her fellow choreographers Rebecca Cochran, Wayne Smith, and Emily Hefley, in addition to teddy bear installation-artist Sheri Bancroft and monologist Adam Remsen.

“Rebecca has choreographed a piece for me about a cold, lonely person on Christmas looking for a bit of warmth,” says Koeppel, who’ll be performing in the gingerbread house. She is also reviving “Oh Brother,” a piece originally performed for Voices of the South’s 2008 installment of the company’s ever-changing holiday grab bag, Present/Present. It was inspired by Christmases spent with a beloved sibling and includes text from Dylan Thomas’ “A Child’s Christmas in Wales.”

“House Happening,” a benefit for both Project: Motion and the Woodruff-Fontaine House, has been designed as a brief escape from the holiday hustle and bustle. Running just over an hour, it provides audiences a chance to take a break and sip some cider or brandy punch and sample a double scoop of Memphis culture. But it’s not too much of a commitment at a time of year when there’s never enough time.

Top Ten Releases of 2015 Thoughts on my favorite non-local releases of the year.

W

hile we pride ourselves on covering as much local music as humanly possible in this music section, 2015 had some amazing albums released by artists who don’t call Memphis home. I guess it’s safe to say I have a thing for Australian bands. Pick up next week’s issue to find out what Andrew Earles and I chose as the best local releases of the year.

10. Royal Headache — High (What’s Your Rupture?)

Royal Headache had their work cut out for them trying to duplicate the massive waves generated by their selftitled debut album. High does not disappoint. An amazing sophomore record from a band that can get even the most serious crowd dancing and singing along.

9. Courtney Barnett — “Boxing Day Blues (Revisited)” B/W “Shivers” (Third Man Records) Normally I wouldn’t include a record on a year-end list just for the B-side, but “Shivers” is no ordinary B-side.

Barnett had a breakout year with her album Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, but her cover of the Boys Next Door’s “Shivers” sealed the deal for me. She absolutely nails the Nick Cave classic. Expect to hear a lot more about Barnett in 2016, and hopefully she’ll dig more into Cave’s discography in the process.

8. Leon Bridges — Coming Home (Columbia) An amazing debut of a modern soul record from Houston, Texas, native Leon Bridges. This record sounds old enough to satisfy soul purists but modern enough to get a new generation interested in artists like Sam Cooke and Otis Redding. “Coming Home” is definitely the breadwinner track on this album, but songs like “Pull Away” and “Shine” are also instant classics.

7. Cheena — S/T Single (Sacred Bones) 2015 wouldn’t have been a successful year for punk rock without a few super groups, right? Meet Cheena, the New York band featuring members of Hank Wood and the Hammerheads, Crazy Spirit, Pharmakon, and Anasazi. After an amazing demo tape, Sacred Bones released the band’s debut single, featuring the slide-guitar slasher “Did I Tell You Last Night.” The band will be releasing their debut LP on Sacred Bones sometime next year, and if it’s possible for a New York punk band to gain more hype than any of the former bands listed, Cheena will be the group to do it.

6. Destruction Unit — Negative Feedback Resistor (Adult Swim) Adult Swim gave these Arizona psych lords some money to record an album, and then gave the whole thing away for free through their website. While this might have been some kind of weird publicity stunt similar to Scion’s attempt to infiltrate random facets of the underground music scene, Negative Feedback Resistor is anything but some sort of half-assed promotional tool. Those who caught the band live in Memphis this year might still have hearing loss, and the album captures the band’s live sound better than any of their previous work. Essential noise rock.

5. Earl Sweatshirt — I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside (Columbia) My favorite hip-hop release by a nonMemphian (Juicy J and Yo Gotti killed it this year) was created by Earl Sweatshirt, the California MC who is so effortlessly cool on I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside he sounds like he could stop rapping and light up a joint at any moment. The most promising member of the nowdefunct Odd Future rap crew still writes rhymes with ease, and the production on I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside is some of the best in recent memory with its ability to meld all kinds of genres into a laid-back yet powerful record.

4. Drinks — Hermits on Holiday (Heavenly/Birth) I’m admittedly a fan of almost everything Tim Presley does. His latest band with songwriter Cate Le Bon caught me off guard with its stripped-down approach and effortless post-punk grooves. Mix Le Bon’s Velvet Underground-esque songwriting and Presley’s bedroomrecording genius, and you’ve got a winner. Album-opener “Laying Down the Rock” is the best I’ve heard all year.

3. Power — Electric Glitter Boogie (Cool Death) A late entry to the 2015 class, Electric Glitter Boogie might have taken the No. 1 spot if I had more time to digest it. Taking all the best parts of glam rock, proto-metal, and pub rock, Power created an insane, rock-and-roll monster with Electric Glitter Boogie. From the ridiculous snake skin-embossed cover to the amazing Motorheadmeets-Coloured Balls-influenced lyrics, this album is one of the most promising Australian debuts since Royal Headache’s self-titled album or Total Control’s Henge Beat.

2. Institute — Catharsis (Sacred Bones) When it comes to original-sounding punk bands, Austin, Texas, seems to have something figured out that the rest of the United States can only hope to imitate. Much like San Francisco had the psych-scene on notice during the mid-’00s, Austin seems to be America’s punk mecca.

Catharsis might have nods to U.K. bands like Crass and Crisis, but the songwriting is still original and light-years ahead of any other band dabbling in that style. Singer Moses Brown turns self-loathing into an art form on songs like “Perpetual Ebb” and “Cheaptime Morals” while the band churns out meticulous post-punk behind him.

1. Rule of Thirds — S/T (Nopatience) My favorite record of 2015 came from a band I’d never heard until they played Murphy’s to about 20 people this past April. Rule of Thirds immediately demand attention with album opener “Any War,” the most abrasive, unrelenting song on the record. From there, the band flits between calculated synth-punk and goth rock, making for an instant Australian classic that is still being criminally underlooked. A flat-out amazing album.

Top Local Shows of 2015

Jessica Pratt at Minglewood Hall, September Jessica Pratt opened for Beach House on their most recent tour that stopped through Minglewood Hall, but to me the only thing that mattered that night was Pratt and her amazing acoustic folk rock.

Her delicate music might be best-suited for a smaller setting, but the show was still excellent. –CS. Hank Wood and the Hammerheads at the Hi-Tone during Gonerfest 12, September Widely considered a favorite of this year’s Gonerfest for a reason, these NYC insular punk/hardcore weirdos brought a doubledrummer onslaught that was as heavy with nuance as it was … heavy. –AE. Cities Aviv and PreauXX at the HiTone, August The battle for the best underground rapper in Memphis is between two MCs who frequently collaborate with each other, and this late-summer show at the Hi-Tone proved that both Cities Aviv and PreauXX are fit to wear the crown. –CS Jack Oblivian and the Sheiks at the Harbor Town Amphitheater, April The River Series at the Harbor Town Amphitheater wrapped its second season this year, with each show well-curated and well-attended. Seemingly made for this type of gig, Jack O. and the Sheiks rocked on the river to a packed crowd, and the free hot dogs and Wiseacre beer made this show one of the best of the year. –CS Torche at the Hi-Tone, March The reliable deliverers of one of the best marriages of pop hooks and insane heaviness returned after a little while away from their perennial stops in town and didn’t stop short of expectations. –AE.

Evil Army Record Release Show at Murphy’s, December The kings of Memphis metal recently returned to Murphy’s for a packed show, and all was right in the heavy music realm of Memphis. After everything that Evil Army has been Yo Gotti through over the past few years, it was good to see the three-piece back in action, with a killer new EP in tow. –CS. Destruction Unit, Ex-Cult, and Gimp Teeth at the Hi-Tone Small Room, March I fancied myself accustomed to extremely loud live bands until Destruction Unit’s brutally intense yet oddly hypnotizing set literally caused something close to vertigo, and a few minutes of fresh air were required to set my head straight. –AE. House of Lightning, WRONG, and Mayfair at the Hi-Tone, June I went for the melodic prog-metal guitar acrobatics of the Torche/Floor-related House of Lightning, but got there early enough to be blown away by local heavy post-emo shoegaze outliers Mayfair, who have recorded a full-length (for release next year). Keep an eye on this band. –AE. Public Image Ltd. at the New Daisy Theater, November The New Daisy brought the prince of punk back to Memphis, and the band absolutely destroyed the place. John Lydon may be all about peace, love, and understanding these days, but his ability to captivate an audience with his abrasive stage antics and hilarious stage banter is still very much intact. –CS Coliseum at the Hi-Tone, March The busy but still unfairly overlooked Louisville trio that’s played Memphis many times put on a fantastically tight show of their heavy and dark post-punk earlier this year in the wake of their first full-length on Jacob Bannon’s unstoppable Deathwish Inc. label. –AE. Show I wish I went to: Tommy Wright III at Juicy Jim’s, May Tommy Wright III played at Juicy Jim’s this summer, and I’m still kicking myself for not being at what had to be one of the weirdest and best shows of 2015. Oh well, there’s always next year. -CS.

LUCERO FAMILY CHRISTMAS AT MINGLEWOOD HALL Lucero kick Christmas off early this year when they play Minglewood Hall Saturday night. The band will play two sets — one acoustic and one electric — and a portion of the night’s proceeds will go toward an undisclosed charity. More than 1,500 people attended Lucero’s Family Picnic this summer, and a turnout that size on Saturday is a safe bet. 2015 saw a new record from Lucero called All a Man Should Do, and singer Ben Nichols described it as an effort that took 25 years of mistakes to get done, in addition to calling it the album he’s wanted to make since he was a teenager. All a Man Should Do was recorded at Ardent Studios with Ted Hutt (a producer the band has worked with multiple times) and features a cover of the Big Star classic “I’m in Love With a Girl.” Jody Stephens is featured on the recording of that track, and one can only hope Lucero brings him onstage for a live version this Saturday. While they might be a national treasure to alt-country fans nationwide, Lucero is still definitely a Memphis band, and the upcoming Christmas show as well as the block party are testaments to their love for the Bluff City.

After releasing All a Man Should Do, Lucero hit the road. Currently on tour in the South, the Family Christmas gig will serve as a homecoming show as well. The band is also set to tour Europe extensively early next year, presumably making Saturday’s show the lone local Lucero show in the immediate future. If you feel like starting the party early, the second annual “Deck the Hall” event that benefits Le Bonheur kicks off at 4 p.m. at Minglewood. Ben Callicot, Drew Erwin, and more will perform. Noise-making toys. Tinsel everywhere. I have four children, so this is how my Christmases have looked and sounded for the past 17 years. And that’s great. This is just how it should be — loud and colorful and joyful.

But I need my alone time, so every year I’ve managed to carve out a little space just for myself during these endof-year celebrations. While the kids are watching those television specials or playing with their toys or baking cookies, I’ve made it a point to take a book off the shelf, sit, and read. And for many years — more than I can remember, really — that book has been Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger.

I can’t even recall why this is the book. It isn’t about Christmas or the New Year.

Santa doesn’t appear, nor do reindeer or a trimmed tree. And yet, this book gives me comfort, each page filled with a nostalgia of my own making.

The copy I’ve been reading for all these years — a Bantam Books paperback edition published in 1964 — has been carried from house to house as we’ve moved, and from room to room as I find a new spot to read. This year, though, is even more poignant for me. Among the words of Salinger within these dog-eared, sepia pages with the covers taped together, are favorite passages, sentences, and whole paragraphs underlined. These marks aren’t just mine. Many were made by my old friend Jim Phillips.

It was Jim who, when I was a young man in that moment when reading might seem like something not to be carried in the baggage from childhood to adulthood, rekindled an interest in reading for me that had been dormant since grade school. We were roommates and would sit for hours discussing Salinger and Vonnegut and Kesey and Kerouac. There were late nights in bars when we each hinted that we, too, might

be writers someday. It’s the sort of thing said aloud only between the closest of friends and after too many beers.

Jim would go on to be a songwriter, fronting bands and playing solo shows in Memphis and, later, his adopted home of Albuquerque, New Mexico. I hear so much of that literature he loved in his songs now. This copy of Franny and Zooey was his, packed up with my own books at some point during one of our many ill-conceived moves as nomads in our early 20s.

Jim died last May, far too young at the age of 46. While I still have his songs playing in heavy rotation at home and my wife and I share stories of our friend with our kids, this will be the first year reading Franny and Zooey without being able to talk with him about it. But there will be his inspiration, underlined in ink on every other page.

Jim loved reading books, but more than that, I think, he loved talking about them. Books beget conversation, something in shorter and shorter supply these days as we opt for texts and tweets.

We were friends long before technology caught up, though it did help us to keep in touch over the years since he moved away.

Memory is what we get from books, nostalgia tucked neatly in the gutter like so much ephemera found in used bookstores. During this time of new and shiny gifts, where new books will certainly be stacked up on my night table, it’s the old that I go for, the familiar, the comfortable. Like a good song and the smell of Mom’s cookies baking in the oven, a book’s title or opening line can transport us back to a time that might have been happier if not simpler. W

hen you were a little girl, was it your dream to work with ham?”

Suzanne Bryan Sampietro of the Good Ham Company laughs and says no.

But, yes, meat is a family trade. Her grandfather founded a meat company, Bryan’s Market, in 1936.

That business was sold, and about three years ago, Sampietro and her father started the Good Ham Company, which sells five-pound smoked, boneless hams seasoned using an old family recipe.

Hams were sold initially through word-of-mouth, then Good Ham got into a food show and then a catalogue. They were picked up by a distributor that got the ham into restaurants such as Aldo’s Pizza Pies.

Good Hams ($35) are available online at goodhamcompany.com with free delivery in Memphis. The last day to order for the holidays is Friday, December 18th. The hams are sold at Buster’s as well.

Sampietro says the hams are pretty much a no-brainer: They’re precooked and have a long shelf life (five to seven days in the fridge; six to eight weeks in the freezer). Plus, she says, “Even people who don’t like ham, love it.” goodhamcompany.com JC Youngblood, manager of Central BBQ downtown, has what he calls a “cheat sheet.” The list, filled with restaurants and must-see points of interest, is printed out whenever tourists ask him where they should go next. It’s his way of spreading the love.

Memphis Flavors also offers gift baskets. The 3Peat ($29.95) is a trio of sauces, from the Rendezvous, Central BBQ, and Germantown Commissary. The Competition Set ($29.95) features barbecue sauces and spices from barbecue teams Killer Hogs and Victory Lane BBQ. Then there’s the Memphis Flavor Holiday Sampler ($79.95) with sweets from Dinstuhl’s, hot sauce from Crazy Good, a bag of Makeda’s butter cookies, a jar of Flo’s, and barbecue sauces and spices.

“I thought it was a lamebrain idea,” says Youngblood, recalling when he first heard the pitch for Memphis Flavor. “But then we got to talking about it … ” Youngblood is the face of the business; his partner handles the logistics.

Initially, the idea was to focus just on barbecue sauce and spices, but Youngblood thought they should broaden the scope. He is thinking of expanding further —

he Christmas holiday’s power as an inducer of seasonal affective disorder lies in its rigid family decorum and enforced good feeling.

That’s why Christmas movies like Bad Santa, Gremlins, and Die Hard resonate: Their blood and vulgarity ridicule that decorum and the sinking sense of not living up to an impossible ideal.

The horror film Krampus invades the suburbs with blood and shock, but wrapped around that is a disgust with annoyances of the season that isn’t as lived-in. It opens with a slow-motion montage of a Black Friday shopping riot, which segues into our main character’s onstage fight in a Christmas play.

The slo-mo isn’t subtle, but it is special. From there, things get less so. Max (Emjay Anthony), a true believer in Santa Claus, has his love for Christmas challenged by the arrival of in-laws and the resulting tension between his mother and father (Toni Collette and Adam Scott). In anger, he rips up a letter to the North Pole and tosses it into the wind, where the mythological German monster Krampus finds it, thus precipitating his family’s ruin.

Krampus, a reverse Santa Claus who steals naughty children, is a perfect premise for horror. Director Michael Dougherty makes the mistake of taking his sweet time getting to his horned monstrosity, alternating between Max’s trite wishes for family togetherness and the in-laws’ one-dimensional idiocy in a slow build to the supernatural. The result is the first half plays like a weaker version of National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

Old pros like Scott, Collette, and David Koechner can’t elevate the material. The slow build only leaves those beats for brief, imaginative stops in a German-speaking granny’s animated backstory, and wonderful It Follows-like visuals of Krampus stalking the rooftops. A magical storm descends upon the family, stranding them in their house. The sudden claustrophobia of electricity loss, missing neighbors, and blocked streets is well done. But the film only

truly comes alive when the characters visit the attic, and are attacked by a league of wonderfully designed nightmare toys.

This structure won’t matter to the older children the film seems pitched at — the two-dimensional Christmas love-hate will be fresh to them. For their benefit, the film has been denuded of gore that would ordinarily punctuate every monster attack.

(Several characters helpfully sink into the snow without blood.) Lovingly terrifying images, from a gingerbread man catching children with a hook and pulling them up a fireplace, to a kid’s slo-mo fall into Hell, will stick in the mind even when the script fails.

I particularly liked the Gremlins-esque gingerbread men’s nailgun attack, a teddy bear with sharp teeth, and a Christmas tree angel with gargoyle wings.

The film’s ending also strikes the right horrific note for kids, in the manner of an old Twilight Zone.

Dougherty, who has done seasonal horror before with Trick ‘r Treat, is very spirited when it comes to visuals, and when we finally see Krampus up close, he’s a wonderful Guillermo del Toro-like creation.

He should have had more to do, in the manner of frequently seen villains like Freddy or Jason. Future Krampus films letting forth the bloodcurdle everyone feels at the group-schmaltz belch of our collective winter holiday should just get right to it.

Mick, on the other hand, is at the hotel with a staff of writers creating his next film, which he calls “my testament.” His love of creation is intact, and that keeps his mind young, even if he can’t get it up for the fetching young prostitute who haunts the lobby.

Beside the ace cinematography, Caine and Keitel’s buddy routine is the best thing about Youth. Mick tries to puncture Fred’s growing cynicism and apathy, while Fred works hard at doing absolutely nothing. Sorrentino’s screenplay bounces the pair off of an unlikely group of well-heeled hotel guests, none of whom seem to be having any fun whatsoever.

About three-quarters of the way through Italian writer/ director Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth, Fred Ballinger (Michael Caine) and his best friend Mick Boyle (Harvey Keitel) watch a totally nude Miss Universe (Madalina Diana Ghenea) slowly enter a hot tub. “Who is THAT?” Fred says.

“God,” Mick says.

Waiting to meet God is the primary theme of Youth, which recently took home Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actor for Caine at the European Film Awards. When we meet Fred, the retired composer is meeting with a representative of Queen Elizabeth, who is offering him knighthood if he will only agree to come out of retirement and conduct his composition “Simple Songs” in a command performance. He refuses, citing “personal reasons.”

He and Mick are staying at an ultra posh resort in the Swiss Alps that cinematographer Luca Bigazzi has a grand old time filming. But the constantly excellent food, happyending massages, and medicore entertainment somehow only add to the funereal atmosphere. The name of the sculpture in the hotel lobby says it all: Alpine Prison. Fred has lost his hunger for creation, and thus his IN will to live.

Some of Sorrentino’s digressions work, and some of them don’t. The dialogue is occasionally clunky in an English-as-a-second-language kind of way. But as long as Caine and Keitel are around, ogling the young women and antagonizing the bored rich, Youth remains compelling.

Fred’s daughter, Lena (Rachel Weisz), endures the dissolution of her marraige. Actor Jimmy Tree (Paul Dano) is sullenly preparing for a role in a historical drama that, when revealed, gets the film’s biggest laugh. The once-youthful superstar footballer Maradona (Roly Serrano) is now morbidly obese, but still mobbed by fans.

Veteran actress Brenda Morel (Jane Fonda) arrives late in the action to drop some plot bombshells and throw the most epic fit of the 2015 film season.

I wish I loved Christmas more. It should be easy, right?

What’s not to love about parties and gifts, food and booze — a shortlist of my favorite things? The problem is, the holiday just doesn’t seem to love me back. I’m no good at Christmasing.

Let’s just say I’m not my best self this time of year.

When I was in third grade, I sang in the children’s choir at church. It must have been open to all kids regardless of talent, because my singing voice is Roseanne-Barr-singingthe-national-anthem bad and always has been. As with ballet, baton, piano lessons, and every other activity, I suspect it was just another excuse for my parents to get me out of the house for a few hours. Well, I sure showed them.

We were scheduled to sing at Christmas Eve Mass. At the end of rehearsal a few days before the service, the director addressed the entire group.

“Please remember to wear your church clothes, and not the costume you wore in the program. Do you understand? Do not wear your costume. Wear what you would normally wear to Christmas Mass. Everyone nod, so I know you’re paying attention.”

“What are you supposed to wear for church?” my mother asked me the night before the Mass.

To this day, my response is more of a mystery than how the virgin Mary became pregnant. “I think we’re supposed to wear our costumes,” I said.

I deserved what happened next.

“Oh yeah. She did say that,” I thought to myself as the director explained to my mom that she had very clearly and adamantly told us what to wear.

In my defense, she should have sent a note home to the parents. These were elementary school kids! Forget that I was the only one in the group who could not be trusted to relay the message.

There wasn’t enough time to go home and change. I ditched the halo headband, but the wings were not detachable. I had my very first “walk of shame” at age 8 as I cried in the line to get Communion. At least I was small for my age, so I could pass for a younger kid. Hard to believe I was a “gifted” child, huh?

That was the beginning of a long legacy of Christmas debacles, which also includes nearly ruining Santa for multiple children, countless awkward company parties, and a lengthy unlucky streak in white-elephant gift exchanges.

I’ve seen one white Christmas in Memphis, and I’ll only remember it because I face-planted on the sidewalk in front of a Cooper-Young bar … while sober. This weekend I’ll be wrapping gifts for charity, so I’m really looking forward to seeing how I manage to humiliate myself there, too.

Also harshing my Christmas cheer is my tendency to buy all Christmas gifts at the last possible moment. I’m no procrastinator — I just utterly and completely lack impulse control when it comes to shopping.

I don’t observe many traditions, but I do this one thing every year where I spend the entire holiday shopping season lavishing myself with discounted merchandise instead of buying gifts.

I blame email marketing. It’s the same thing every morning when I open my Gmail account: “Whoa. Extra 30 percent off sale items at Madewell? Let me see if they have anything for, um, my cat.” Now the cat has two new sweaters, a pair of jeans, and a dress. But he really needed that stuff.

For winter. Because it’s so cold in Memphis right now.

I bought two pairs of earrings on Black Friday and put them in my own stocking. If that wasn’t sick enough, I almost took out a pair to wear to a holiday party and had to talk myself out of it using the same kind of language they use on Intervention.

Right now, as I write this, I have purchased a grand total of three items to give as gifts. I will undoubtedly be spending part of Christmas Eve in the Oak Court Mall parking lot cussing and crying and the rest pacing the front porch on the lookout for an 11th-hour Amazon Prime shipment.

Otherwise, I hope everyone enjoys the free pizza cards I stole from my husband’s wallet. Or whatever gift cards Walgreens has left. Or maybe I can part with one of those pairs of earrings.

Good luck to my family and friends. I’m sure whatever I come up with will be great.
