Contemporary Craft is more than an organization, it is a community. We exist in relationship through conversations that happen in our gallery, weaving together narratives in our studio spaces, and by connecting people to an object to hold in their hand or wear on their body—made from another person’s hand.
Our residency programs are bringing artists from both local neighborhoods and from across the country to share their lived experiences and showcase their artistic practices with us. And the Fiber Studio is not only bursting with active looms, it’s an incubator for new products and the formation of strong friendships.
The Community Days that we’ve been hosting see families returning to our space for creative experiences; and our exhibition tours bring people together through discussion— to learn from one another.
We are putting the final touches on our archives and permanent collection, and we’re looking forward to how we will begin to engage with the larger field of craft through research and sharing.
Building community is at the heart of Contemporary Craft, and I feel fortunate to walk through our spaces and see people laughing together, learning with one another, or experiencing something new in a group. I want to thank all of you for the role that you play in this—and the support that continues to make our space open and accessible.
Sincerely,
Rachel Saul Rearick Executive Director
Craft has long been both an individual and collective activity, with knowledge and techniques being passed person to person, one generation to the next. At Contemporary Craft, we continue to be part of this lineage by providing opportunities for makers of all ages, abilities, and skill levels. Craft brings people together, quite literally, to build community and create something more.
Through the Partners in Craft program, CC works with local partner organizations to develop artist-led craft activities in CC’s studios. Each partner program is unique, and designed to meet the organization’s needs and goals for engaging and supporting their participants. This year, Partners included Creative Citizens Studios, Lawrenceville United, Department of Veterans Affairs, Latino Community Center, Highmark Caring Place, and Pittsburgh Public Schools for activities in woodworking, weaving, enameling, basketry, broommaking, bookbinding, fabric dyeing, and metalsmithing.
Weave-a-Thon
As the weaving community at CC has grown dramatically over the past few years, Weave-a-Thon is an important opportunity to bring our regional weavers together for a day of fiber fun. The atmosphere at the 12-hour marathon event in November was joyous and lively as 29 weavers created 71 dishtowels, which were then sold in the Contemporary Craft Store (and were one of the hottest items in the Store in November!). Perhaps the largest celebration of the event was the final fundraising announcement: the weavers raised over $9,000, which supported the purchase of a new Macomber 12-harness loom. This loom, which will join CC’s Fiber Studio in fall 2024, is special because it is much larger than what most of our weavers have at home—enabling weavers to create more intricate patterns or take on more elaborate projects.
Behind the scenes, Loom Club members and the Weave-a-Thon weavers spent weeks before the event designing the warps and dressing the looms, and additional volunteers helped hem and finish the towels in the days after the event. A huge thank you to everyone who made this event possible!
Local high school students learn how to use the Rabbit Laser and other craft techniques in CC’s Studios in this free after school program focusing on the intersection of craft and technology. Students design and create their own capstone project to be featured at CC’s spring Community Day Celebration, have access to CC’s Studios throughout the program, and learn about career opportunities that utilize craft and technology from creative professionals. The third cohort of TACT participants went through the program during the 2023-24 school year.
CC’s 2024 Weave-a-Thon will be on November 15—click here for more information about how to get involved!

Since the early days as The Store in Verona, providing support for artists has been a key activity for Contemporary Craft. ‘Support’ encompasses many things—financial support through sales of work and teaching opportunities; access to studio space, tools, and equipment; classes to learn new skills and deepen existing knowledge; connecting artists with those who will enjoy and be moved by their work; and more. Everything that CC does—at its core— supports artists, and some big changes in the past year have elevated the ways in which we offer opportunities.
CC has recently begun to welcome its second cohort of National Artists-in-Residence.
To learn more about them, click or scan this QR code!
In summer 2023, Contemporary Craft launched its first National Artist-in-Residence program. This program provides artists from around the country, and around the world, with dedicated time, space, and resources to further their artistic process during the one-month or six-month residencies. If you’ve visited CC over the past year, hopefully you have had the chance to meet some of our Artists-in-Residence, take a class from them, or perhaps buy something they created in the Store.
National Artists-in-Residence in 2023-24 included:
Jason Stein metals and jewelry
Jason’s work was featured in Contemporary Craft’s Gerri Kay exhibition cases in summer 2024.
Adrien Segal sculpture
Adrien spent her residency creating site-specific work for CC’s Climate Awakening exhibition.
Sarah Byrd fashion and textile history
Sarah’s knowledge of fiber history was extra helpful for investigating quilts in Contemporary Craft’s permanent collection.
Carl Johnson fiber
Carl weaves with wire, which allows him to create 3D sculptures with his weavings.
Yael Braha ceramics
Yael was recently selected for the American Craft Council’s Emerging Artists Cohort.
Dongyi Wu jewelry
Dongyi was a finalist for Contemporary Craft’s LEAP award in 2019.
Many of CC’s exhibitions feature multiple artists—like the Transformation series or Fiberart International—to show the variety of techniques and artistic styles within a material. Others bring multiple artists together to show different perspectives or knowledge of a topic, such as in Climate Awakening. But a solo artist exhibition enables an artist to show a more complete view of their repertoire, and for the viewer to gain a deeper understanding of an artist’s style and evolution. Recognizing the importance of solo exhibitions for advancing to the next stage of their careers, CC launched an annual series featuring the work of an exceptional craft artist who has yet to have an exhibition dedicated to their work. The first artist to be featured in this series was New Mexico-based ceramic artist Brie Ruais, whose large-scale yet intimate works investigated the connection between the internal self and the external world, particularly with nature. Working with an individual artist to imagine and design an exhibition has been much more of a collaboration between the artist and CC, and is an opportunity for the artist’s vision to shine through the thoughtful selection of works and how they are presented in dialogue with each other.
To hear more about Brie Ruais’s work from the artist herself on CC’s podcast Sounds from the Studio, click or scan this QR code!
A special thanks to the Tomayko Foundation, for their generous support of this exhibition series.
Pittsburgh has a rich history in craft, and creating opportunities for regional artists has been an important part of Contemporary Craft since its inception. CC hosts two Regional Artists-in-Residence each quarter, many of the artists in CC’s Store are from the Pittsburgh region, and a new exhibition series highlighting skilled regional craft artists kicked off in spring 2024.
The first exhibition in this series delved into artists’ interpretations of grief, mourning, and celebration of life, showcasing works by Sue Amendolara, Kimberlyn Bloise, Dan Brockett, Cheryl Capezzuti, Thomas Kieran Doyle, Meryl Engler, Sharon Massey, Zach Mellman-Carsey, Jada Patterson, Lucas Pointon, Katie Rearick, Kate Strachan, and Hee Joo Yang.
Regional Artists-in-Residence in FY24 included Christina Kingerski, Sophia Park, Carolina Alamilla, Addoley Dzegede, Kathryn Shriver, and Teresa Audet.
The Janet Krieger Artist Spotlight highlighted a different working artist in CC’s Store each quarter; pictured is Tammy Schweinhagen and her work, one of the artists selected for this feature.
During the exhibition Climate Awakening, CC hosted a day-long forum, bringing people working in a variety of areas related to climate change including beekeeping, public policy, architecture, textile production, and artist studio practices together for discussions with the community.

Contemporary Craft is a place for creativity, bringing people together for handson learning in formal and informal settings. Over the past year, CC has grown and expanded its Studio spaces and community offerings in response to the popularity of programs and the needs and interests of visitors. Every day, there are people making and learning in the Studios, engaging with art in the gallery, and finding objects that inspire them and bring them joy in the Store—just being at Contemporary Craft inspires creativity.

This year, CC added a Studio space dedicated to the Rabbit Laser—a special piece of equipment that can cut and engrave a variety of materials—allowing the wall between the Fibers and Mixed Media Studios to be opened for a larger ‘extended’ Studio space. CC has also been the recipient of a number of donated looms, allowing multiple weaving classes to be offered during the same time period while still having looms available to rent. A generous donation of metalsmithing and jewelry tools and equipment is being integrated into the Metals Studio, providing studio users a larger selection of tools and access to other techniques through new equipment.
Beyond workshops, CC offers Open Studio time for makers looking for studio space, access to tools and equipment, and a community of artists.
Did you know that Contemporary Craft offers private workshops for team building, birthday parties, and other special events? This year, CC hosted groups from Google, Duolingo, Allegheny Health Network, PPG, and other organizations for custom workshops.
“Our Duolingo team was thrilled with the private workshop we took on enameling at Contemporary Craft. The team at Contemporary Craft (led by stellar artist and teacher Maria Camera-Smith) facilitated a 2-hour diveright-in session that got our group of 11 people learning, building, and having an all around great time together. We were inspired by the space, got to wander through open exhibitions, and were awed by all the cool works that people design and build.
In the workshop, we each had the chance to make our own (cool!) unique pieces, and to learn more about different techniques and approaches in this type of metal working. The experience really brought us together and I hope to return soon - it was a 10/10.” - Grey, Director of Strategy @ Duolingo

CC’s three annual Community Day celebrations offer a variety of free exhibition-focused and hands-on activities for visitors of all ages and abilities, and have been very popular since starting in 2022. However, May’s Community Day looked a little different— there was no exhibition in the gallery! This day focused on the “behind the scenes” process of what goes into putting on an exhibition. Visitors tested their art packaging skills in a ‘Fragile & Fancy’ art drop, curated their own exhibition from an assortment of objects, designed and made their own exhibition catalog, and viewed an exhibition of student work from the Teen Apprentice in Craft and Technology (TACT) program.
Beyond just viewing art in the gallery, CC has been adding ways to learn about and engage with the work in its exhibitions. For Climate Awakening, a tactile station featuring models and materials used in the works gave visitors the chance to interact with the exhibition in a different way, and the Climate Awakening Library offered a selection of books for children and adults on different topics related to climate change.
Oneness included a video projection showing the artist working in her studio as well as out in the environment, offering a peek into the very physical process of creating the large-scale works in the gallery.
For Hereafter, an audio guide recorded by artists and CC Staff accompanied each work, offering additional context and artistic perspective beyond what is included in the gallery.
For all exhibitions, CC has added opportunities for visitors to engage directly with artists through artist-led guided exhibition tours and artist talks as part of the exhibition opening weekend activities.
Regional Artist-in-Residence Carolina Alamilla designed and installed two custom wallpapers with ceramic features in CC’s public restrooms, adding an exciting pop of color to these spaces.
CC’s podcast Sounds from the Studio is a unique opportunity to hear from artists first hand about their work and process.

Contemporary Craft has always believed that craft is more than utility; while function is an important part of craft, it also has the potential to be so much more. The artist’s vision and message, skill, and understanding of material and process for any craft is as in-depth as any other field. Craft is art, and it is everywhere—from a beloved and well worn quilt to a couture gown, a pinch pot to an elaborately decorated ceramic vessel.
Contemporary Craft maintains a small permanent collection, mostly made up of objects from The Store, commissions and reproductions from the Sociable Workshop, and exhibition acquisitions—nearly all of which were added prior to 2010. Rarely have works from the collection been showcased at CC in recent years, but attendees of CC’s annual Out of Hand Gala (‘The Archive Edition’) got a special peek at stunning works by Lenore Tawney, Dale Chihuly, Christian Burchard, Sunkoo Yuh, Marie Kelly, Jerome D’Angelo, and others. CC plans to begin activating this collection more often, to draw parallels between the past and the future of craft.
In addition to the Permanent Collection, CC holds a comprehensive record of its past exhibitions, catalogs and publicity materials, key programs, press coverage, artist correspondence, and other materials that illustrate the role CC has played in the craft field over the past 50+ years. Significant work has taken place over the past year to inventory and organize the materials, update the storage systems to preserve the materials, and prepare materials for future display and public access.
