In Carla issue 20, we trace the lineage of Carla alongside the changing fabric of the Los Angeles art scene, remembering the shows and moments that shaped
our coverage. In place of ads, we have included a gallery viewing room, offering space and visibility to some of the hundreds of exhibitions across Los Angeles that have been postponed indefinitely or canceled. All of the essays and reviews included in this issue were written in quarantine (featuring shows our writers were lucky enough to squeak into before the stay-at-home order). Travis Diehl profiles Gala Porras-Kim, and Catherine Wagley delves into New Images of Man—both the original exhibition and the redux. Jessica Simmons looks at pandemics of the past and how artists have found creative solutions throughout some of civilization’s darkest days, and Aaron Horst has been walking, and writes about how his focused attention while ambling through his neighborhood leads to contemplation of artworks, memories, and reflections on the city.
