Touched by Hannah A Dad with Aggressive Cancer and His One Pound Newborn Daughter Tread on Deathbeds

Chris and Betsy Hennessy, had defied medical odds to conceive but found themselves in crisis when daughter Hannah arrived three months premature—a micro-preemie weighing just one pound nine ounces. The prognosis was grim: even if she survived, doctors warned that her chances of leading a healthy life were poor. Just four weeks prior, Chris underwent radical prostatectomy surgery for aggressive prostate cancer.

Father and daughter fought for survival simultaneously against overwhelming odds. Yet, an extraordinary story of resilience and unbreakable bonds between father, mother, and daughter emerged from this dual medical nightmare.

Instead of succumbing to fear, Chris faced it head-on and lived entirely in the present moment.

Despite surgical complications and excruciating pain, he stationed himself beside Hannah’s incubator for countless hours. His giant finger was held tight in her tiny grasp as he sang improvised songs and prayers, his irrepressible wit lifting spirits throughout the NICU—a beacon of hope during the most challenging times.

Touched by Hannah is a gripping medical memoir and tender love story about Chris and Betsy, whose unwavering partnership anchors them through their darkest hours. Their parental love reveals how living life as usual amidst chaos became their pathway to healing.

Seventh Day Rest Supports Foster, Adoptive, and Kinship Families

Seventh Day Rest, a Colorado nonprofit, provides therapeutic coaching, self-care scholarships, and respite opportunities to foster, adoptive, and kinship caregivers.

By addressing burnout and secondary trauma, the organization helps caregivers stay healthy so children in foster care can heal in safe, stable homes.

The Need: • Over 50 foster families in Weld County.

• 30–50% of foster homes close each year.

• Children may face multiple placements annually.

Research shows financial and mental health support improves placement stability. Seventh Day Rest works to reduce failed placements and caregiver fatigue.

Founded in 2020 by Ashley Cox, LMSW, Seventh Day Rest began with respite care, family outings, and wraparound support. In 2021, Cox partnered with Colorado Kids Belong, and by 2024, the mission refined to three services: • Therapeutic Coaching: 12 sessions to address secondary trauma, helping caregivers align with strengths and values.

• Self-Care Scholarships: $200 monthly for practical needs such as house cleaning, transportation, or date nights.

• Enrichment/Respite: Family retreats and outings that allow caregivers and children to recharge together.

The team has since grown with Caty Jones (Social Media & Fundraising Manager) and Wendy Jo Faulhaber (Certified Coach).

So far in 2025, Seventh Day Rest has provided 26 therapeutic coaching sessions, awarded 32 self-care scholarships, hosted 7 family enrichment outings, and facilitated 3 respite retreats. In addition, the organization continues to provide emergency wraparound support, including grocery assistance and transportation to essential appointments, directly addressing the emotional and financial needs of families.

Kelly MartindaleOWNER/Publisher What's OnMy Mind Something Worse Than Death Both of my parents are facing imminent death due to age and disease. I’m surprised at the strong emotions I’m experiencing, especially since losing my 9-yr-old daughter and my 23-yr-old son. One brother has died and of course other family members. I have many loved ones with the Lord now. Life has not been easy.

But God… Some think if God is good, He’ll stop bad things from happening, like the death of children, disease in parents or other loved ones, earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis, and of course, active shooters, and war. So, when horrific situations occur, many people blame God or worse, lose faith.

The opposite happens as well. When good things happen, it’s not uncommon that humans take credit for success, instead of thanking God for the blessings.

I’m reading a book by Philip Yancey called The Question That Never Goes Away: Why? I’ve asked that myself, many times. It’s a difficult read, filled with hard truths of all the above situations.

Those tragedies listed happened during my life. They’ve certainly changed me.

Yancey acknowledges that Christians have not always responded to the problem of pain and grief with grace, but he helps us find meaning in the midst of the deepest suffering. This book is a deep and personal reflection on the ways that suffering both challenges and affirms our faith and how we can respond to the existence of evil in a manner that doesn’t dismiss it.

But God… I’ve suffered deeply and my life is now more than half over but I can say that there are many promises of God that He has fulfilled for me. However, there is one greater than most, for me.

For God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never abandon you.” Heb 13:5b, GNT And He hasn’t. He does not abandon His own. There is something worse than death. Hopelessness. Despair. Terrifying darkness. I get afraid, often, but deep within me, I know I am never alone.

I made a decision when I was much younger, and every human has the same choice; acquaint yourself with Jesus. It’s a relationship that evolves daily and ultimately, won’t disappoint.

I couldn’t have survived the deaths of my children without Jesus. He never leaves me alone. He is my comforter in all things, including death.

Community Day is our largest annual event hosted on the second Saturday of September (9/13/2025) from 4 to 9:30 p.m.

As with previous years, Mead-area residents, organizations, and businesses are invited to a day of games and activities, live music, vendor booths, food trucks, a beverage garden, and fireworks! All the festivities happen at Mead Town Park, 441 Third Street.

American Legion Auxiliary Event The American Legion Auxiliary, Unit #1985, will host their 19th annual scholarship fundraiser. There will be a car show (any car clubs out there?) Sponsorships are welcome and you will be recognized at the event! This is open to the public, Sept. 13. Registration begins at 10 am, the fee is $25.00 per entry and the car show begins at noon until 4 PM. Open to cars, trucks, bikes and other oddities. We love to see the ones “in the works”.

There will be food and drinks available plus raffles and drawings.

We have a mini craft show to add to the day as well. Space rental is $25.00. Display some of your favorite items for sale. Donate an item for a door prize. Since this is an indoor event, space is limited. We do not have enough tables to host this large of an event, so you are required to bring your own set-ups. Open @ 10 am and the show is from noon to 4 PM.

Area Mayors’ Report—For those of us who don’t attend meetings MEAD MAYOR, COLLEEN WHITLOW

 Responsible Growth: St. Vrain Valley School District is constructing a new PK-8 school in Mead, scheduled to open in fall 2026. The facility is located by Mead High School, near County Roads 7 and 28, and will share a campus with the high school. The design addresses how the two school communities will interact, with careful planning around fields, parking, and traffic flow. Students living north of Highway 66 will continue to attend Mead Elementary and Mead Middle School, while those living south of Highway 66 will attend the new PK-8 school once it opens.

 Miners Day is right around the corner on Saturday, September 20.

It’s more than a fun day filled with burro races, a hometown parade, live music, food trucks, and fireworks; it’s a celebration of the hardworking individuals whose grit and determination laid the foundation of our community. Hello Firestone Residents, Welcome to September. The time of year where summer is winding down, but the temperatures stay high. This month’s report will be shorter than normal.  As all of you are aware, there has been a lot of road maintenance and construction occurring here in Firestone. A large part of the road maintenance has been Sable Ave., and Birch St.  

 Reliable Infrastructure: The Mead Community Center is set to open in September, with a ribbon-cutting celebration on September 8 and doors opening to the public on September 9. Funding for this project came from new development impact fees, $1 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), and a $1.5 million grant from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs (DOLA). The Community Center will serve as Mead’s first dedicated space for recreation, programming, and community connection.  Public Safety: Registration is now open for Mead’s Citizens Police Academy. Join Mead Police on Thursday evenings, September 11 through October 16, from 6 to 9 p.m., for a behind-the-scenes look at local law enforcement. This free program covers topics such as department policies, Special Operations, and more. Graduates gain a deeper connection to their community and learn how to support crime prevention efforts. Applicants must meet eligibility criteria to participate: http://bit.ly/40WqJ61.  Fiscal Stability: The Town of Mead was awarded a $1.36

million grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Community Clean Transportation Assistance Program. This funding supports the construction of a pedestrian trail and underpass at Highway 66 and Weld County Road 7. The project aims to improve safety, reduce air pollution, and connect all Mead schools with a continuous pedestrian route. Once complete, the underpass will offer a safe and accessible crossing for pedestrians and cyclists at this hightraffic intersection.  Connected Community: Community Day is set for Saturday, September 13, at Town Park. Enjoy an evening packed with family fun, food trucks, live music, and more than 50 booths. National Family Day, a meaningful reminder of the value of spending time with the people who matter most. Here in FREDerick, the “F” stands for Family - and that’s not just a tagline, it’s a core value and guiding principle. Thank you for being a part of our extended Frederick family.  We’re also gearing up for Fall Clean-Up Days. Starting Monday, September 29, residents can pick up a free landfill voucher valid through October 31 for one trip to the Front Range Landfill. Plus, electronics recycling and tree limb disposal are available during designated days throughout the year.  Office Hours: Have questions or concerns about public safety, traffic congestion, road repairs, or anything else related to life in Frederick? Please stop by and chat during my open office hours in September: Thursday, September 18, 4:30-6pm.  In my April message, I shared that the Town is expanding high-speed internet access through a broadband infrastructure buildout. This initiative is designed to enhance connectivity for homes and businesses by offering an additional option for internet service.

 As installation work continues, I want to ensure every resident feels informed and supported. If you have concerns about how the installation may impact your property, please reach out directly to Intrepid Fiber. Their contact information is available on our Town website. While the Town receives regular updates from Intrepid and actively monitors the process, contacting Intrepid directly is the most efficient way to resolve any property-specific issues.  Frederick Arts Committee purchased four of the Masterpiece Carvings from this year’s Chainsaws and Chuckwagons event to display throughout town. Have you spotted any of these incredible works of art yet? Murphy the Moose is giving a warm welcome outside Meco Coffee – keep your eyes peeled for the rest!  Thank you, Frederick family, for giving meaning to how we define community. I’m honored to serve as your mayor and look forward to continuing to build on what matters for a resilient, sustainable community - together.

Both roads have had minor repairs made and chip sealed.  Some other work regarding transportation here in Firestone that has been completed is the upgrading the signal lights systems at the intersections of Booth Farm drive and Colorado Blvd, and Sable Ave and Colorado Blvd. These upgrades incorporated new adaptive timing of the lights at these intersections. Hopefully this will keep traffic flowing better along this area.  The preliminary injunction hearing regarding the towns’ contract dispute with Central Weld County Water District, that I informed you about a couple of months ago has concluded.

It will be a few weeks before we hear the results of that hearing.

When we do know about the results, you will be notified what the decision is.  The third annual Friends of Firestone Day of Service

will be held on Saturday, September 27th from 8:00am2:00pm. If you are interested in helping your fellow neighbors with some home improvement projects, go to firestoneco.gov/ Dayofservice and sign up.  If you are needing to rid your yard of tree limbs, Saturday, September 13th is tree limb drop-off day at the Firestone Public Works facility. You can drop off your tree limbs between 7am and 11am.  Make sure you know what is happening in Firestone.

(C) cloudtweaks.com Do you have a reliable backup system in place? We never know if we’ll be evacuated because of a major weather event. Using the Cloud to back up your data just makes sense.

Our Recommendation: Our recommendation continues to be to store your data in three separate locations.

1. Your computer 2. The Cloud 3. An external solid state drive (SSD) stored in a place that’s not near your computer. Most people who do this have two SSDs. One they keep with their computer for a current back-up. The other goes to a friend’s house, a safety deposit box, or their office. They swap those two drives – every week or two, so one is always current.

Most of us already have one or more backup systems that come with their device. Your iPhone comes with iCloud.

Your Android comes with Google Cloud.

If you use Microsoft Office or Outlook, you probably already have OneDrive. You can generally extend what you backup by finetuning the configuration (and paying more for the additional storage).

The Cloud: What if you want something different? Different people have different requirements. What I look

for are good privacy policies and the ability to access files from any of my devices, or at the public library. These are the Cloud storage systems we see most frequently.

Dropbox has a Professional plan for $20/month which includes 3 TB of storage.

I’ve been using Dropbox since 2011. It was easy to set up and transfer from one computer/ phone to the next.

Google Storage (with plans from 100 GB to 2 TB) also includes Google Drive and Google Photos. The Google cloud works best if you have an Android phone. iCloud stores the photos I take on my iPhone and iPad, my music, and to synch data between the two devices. They have several plans available, billed monthly, from 50 GB ($1/month) to 12 TB ($60/month). iDrive is PC Magazine Editors’ Choice because it is fully encrypted, has fast upload speeds and allows unlimited devices on each account. iDrive will back-up to an external hard drive. iDrive is $100/year for 5 TB. Microsoft OneDrive is included with Microsoft 365 so if you have Office or Outlook, you’ve got it. The storage capacity depends on the plan you’ve chosen, from 5GB to 1 TB. Proton Drive provides end-to-end encryption. I like overall privacy policies.

Proton Drive is $5/month for 200 GB. (They don’t seem to have larger storage plans available.)

Your Road to Home has always been about interesting people and places in the Carbon Valley, as a way to get to know your neighbors but also as a guide to the resources in the region. Rolf & Andrea Kaumann intentionally relocated to Firestone almost 10 years ago to enjoy a different quality of life and to continue their careers as public servants with the State of Colorado.

Theirs is a love story of sorts, as they met much later in life and built a solid relationship foundation, first as friends.

Rooting themselves in the community, earlier on Andrea became a Board member on the High Plains Library District, while they both started more recently participating in HOA and Firestone Board of Trustee meetings, possible due to their work at home schedules.

However, two years ago Rolf was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease and has done his part doing everything in his control to get accepted onto the kidney transplant list at UC Health Anschutz’s Transplant Center. Andrea is doing what she can, “Rallying for Rolf” since she is disqualified from donating her own kidney.

Most patients waiting for a “harvested” kidney, as a result of the organ donor checked box on a driver’s license, have a long wait which can be highly discouraging. But with the Living Donor program, a kidney patient can receive an altruistic or living donation, which can significantly shorten the wait list while receiving a longer lasting organ.

Some interesting facts about kidney donation: -Humans can live with 1 kidney, in fact many are born with just 1.

- If someone tests and is deemed an eligible donor but not the blood type for 1 person, there is a Paired Exchange,”” or SWAP program, making it possible for multiple parties to receive a donation.

- You can read many success stories of those individuals who have donated a kidney and went on to continue living healthy lives and achieving athletic goals - If someone donates their kidney and later on they or a family member needs one, they become fast tracked up the wait list due to their previous act of kindness.

Manufactured Home, Modular, Mobile Home, Factory Built, Trailer. You hear all these terms to describe housing that is built in a factory and moved onto a lot. What is the difference between the terms? It really depends on who you are talking to. Some descriptions have to do with technical specifications, and some descriptions are mainly marketing.

Years ago, many of these homes were called trailers, but that name has gone away due to negative connotations (the image of a tin building with old tires on the roof ). Next, they were referred to as mobile homes, but this term is going away as well, because of the image as well as the fact that many of the homes are on permanent foundations.

Manufactured and Factory Built are terms more commonly used today. They still refer to a home built in a factory but have an image for higher quality and better construction. Modular is the most popular marketing term today, but again, definitions can make a difference.

The non-marketing definition that is usually most important in a real estate transaction or financing of the property comes from HUD (the Department of Housing and Urban Development and overseer of the FHA program). The main part of HUD’s definition regards the chassis that the home is built on (the I-beams under each section of the home). If these I-beams are a permanent part of the structure the HUD considers the home “Manufactured”. If the home is brought to the site and lifted off the beams, and therefore, the chassis is not a part of the home, HUD considers that a “Modular” and it is treated just like a site built home.

Most factory built homes in the area are “Manufactured” but HUD’s definition, even though they are often marketed as “Modular”. The easiest way to tell is to look underneath in the crawl space. If there are I-beams running the length of the home, it is Manufactured. If there are not any I-beams from the transport of the home, it will usually have wood floor joists like a site-built home and would thus be a Modular. Another way to see a difference is that a Manufactured home originally has a title (like a car title), which is often purged when the home is permanently located on a Greg Zadel, CRS, CRB, GRI, ePro lot. Modular homes usually do not have titles.

Health&WELL BEING Food for the Soul: What God Will Not Do Thus says the Lord to this people, “Even so they have loved to wander; they have not kept their feet in check. Therefore the Lord does not accept them; now He will remember their iniquity and call their sins to account.” So the Lord said to me, “Do not pray for the welfare of this people. When they fast, I am not going to listen to their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and grain offering, I am not going to accept them. Rather I am going to make an end of them by the sword, famine, and pestilence” (14:10-12).

This excerpt, from Jeremiah, is striking. Not only might it sound foreign to our ears in our thinking of God, but it also may seem…wrong. Though it may seem wrong, in reality, it is not. God is consistent in this expectation throughout the whole Bible. Three times God orders Jeremiah not to pray for the people. Don’t intercede, don’t utter a prayer or a cry for them. God says He will not hear, and He will not listen. What has happened?

Jeremiah was sent to God’s people of Judah, specifically to Jerusalem, to prophesy about the impending destruction of the city and the captivity of the people by Babylon.

When studying Jeremiah, we learn that all forms of leadership have failed. The rulers, priests, prophets, and scribes are corrupt, and in general everyone has forsaken the Lord and His ways. Though it may be said that God was on their lips, we read that God was far from their hearts. We read of a people who go through the motions of worship, but who also give their hearts to specific pagan gods and to idolatry in general. It’s syncretism, a blending and an appealing to a plurality of gods, perhaps to cover their bases. It was at the foot of Sinai when Aaron said about the golden calf, “This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.” Syncretism goes way back, and even though God made it clear that he was jealous for their attention saying, “You shall have no other gods before me,” and “You shall not make for yourself an idol,” the people continued to struggle.

God is perfectly just in his punishment of the people by Babylon. He sent prophets and promised to relent the disaster if they would repent. Twice in chapter 7 do we read, “Amend your ways and your deeds, and I will let you dwell in this place.” But the people and their forefathers have lived a legacy of sin. Jeremiah is ultimately a grim picture of God’s judgment poured out on a “totally worthless” people (13:7, 10). God will not forgive them without repentance. And that is a vital lesson for Christians today because the same is taught in the New Kingdom.

Jesus said, “Repent and believe in the gospel,” (Mk 1:15). God will not forgive without repentance.

Let’s study the Bible: Fall Festivals The first time the word Moedim is mentioned in the Bible is in Genesis 1:14-15 ‘Then God said, “let there be lights in the expanse of the Heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons (Moedim) and for days and years; And let them be for lights in the expanse of the Heavens to give light on the Earth”; and it was so. This word is also translated into feasts(KJV), or appointed times(NASB). The Bible speaks to these seasons regularly. In Leviticus 23 God tells Moses to tell His people about His appointed times, His seasons, because they will bring light to the world.

There are weekly, monthly and yearly moedim. Weekly is the Sabbath(Shabbat), Monthly is the New moon(Rosh Chodesh).

But today I want to discuss the yearly appointed times. They are divided up into two groups, Spring and Fall. The Spring festivals, which represent our Savior’s first coming (Lev. 23:421) The Fall festivals (Lev 23:2344) represent our Savior’s second coming.

Let’s focus on the fall festivals, since that is where we are today.

The first one listed happens on the 1st day of the 7th month(Sept. 23-24), Rosh Hashanah(New Year, Yom Teruah). This is observed by blowing of trumpets, resting, presenting an offering, gathering together in holiness.

Compare this to Matthew 24:31, and 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 Next is Yom Kippur(Day of Atonement), on the 10th day of the 7th month (Oct. 1-2), this is marked by fasting, repentance, humbling our souls, a gathering together in holiness, and resting from work. Compare this to Luke 24:47, Acts 2:38, 3:19, 17:30, Matthew 4:17 Third is the 15th of the 7th month (Oct. 6-13) and lasts for 7 days. Sukkot (Feast of booths) is celebrated by 2 days of complete rest, an offering to the Lord, gathering our crops, and taking branches & willows(lulav), living in booths for 7 days, as a reminder of the 40 year wilderness wanderings.

Consider Zechariah 14:16-19, and John 1:14.

Local Family Hosts 5K Run/Walk to Raise Awareness for Kawasaki Disease

September 20, 2025 – Peninsula Park, Barefoot Lakes The Kawasaki Kids Foundation is excited to announce the upcoming 5K Run/ Walk for Kawasaki Disease Awareness, happening on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at Peninsula Park in the picturesque Barefoot Lakes neighborhood of Firestone, Colorado.

This special community event is being organized by a local family deeply connected to the cause. Their son, Parker, was diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease when he was just three years old. It was a terrifying time filled with unknowns and uncertainty. Fortunately, Parker received early treatment and has since made a full recovery. Today, he is a vibrant, healthy child. But many families are not as lucky.

“This cause is especially close to our hearts,” shares Parker’s mom. “We’re incredibly grateful for Parker’s outcome, and we want to do everything we can to raise awareness and support for other families who may not yet have answers, or who are still fighting.”

Kawasaki Disease is a rare but serious illness that primarily affects young children, particularly those under the age of 5. It causes inflammation of the blood vessels throughout the body (a condition known as vasculitis) and can lead to serious, long-term heart complications if not treated promptly and effectively.

Funds raised from this event will go directly to the Kawasaki Kids Foundation, a nonprofit committed to raising awareness, advancing research, and supporting children and families affected by the disease.

During the Wednesday night meeting, the Firestone Board of Trustees approved Resolution 25-90, calling for an election to be held on November 4, 2025. The purpose of this election is to submit TABOR ballot questions to the eligible electors of the Firestone Downtown Development Authority (FDDA).

The ballot questions seek authorization for the FDDA to collect, retain, and expend revenues.

Approval of the measures ensures the FDDA has the financial flexibility to reinvest revenues into downtown redevelopment, infrastructure, and community enhancements consistent with the Development Plan and goals of the Authority.
