Setting the sugar and creamer on the table, the two women sit across from each other, and share. The sweats and baggy T-shirts go unnoticed, as do the unkempt hair and yesterday’s makeup.

Frederick Police Department Unveils New SRO Vehicle For the 2022 spring semester, the Frederick Police Department partnered with Frederick High School to design the wrap for their School Resource Officer vehicle. On Thursday, July 28, student Kyle Richards was invited to be the first person on the scene to see the new addition to the FPD fleet with his winning design.

In January, SRO Fairbanks approached Ms. Johnson to ask if her Beginning Graphic Design class would be interested in taking on the vehicle wrap project since the school was changing mascots to the Golden Eagles. Over twenty students in Ms. Johnson’s class accepted the challenge to enter the contest for the official design. SRO Andy Fairbanks, police command staff, Ms. Johnson, and school administrators chose the winning design.

Kyle smiled wide as he said, “I’m glad I get to represent my high school and leave a legacy with my design. Seeing it for the first time, I am so excited to see how visually appealing the colors and design all go together!”

Kyle spent time over the summer with SRO Fairbanks making minor adjustments to the design to represent the FHS Golden Eagles while maintaining the look of a police car. “As a police department, we were happy to use this car as another way to show our partnership with FHS, the St. Vrain Valley School District, our families, and community,” reported SRO Fairbanks.

FHS Principal Dr. Russell Fox was also on hand for the big occasion to celebrate, stating, “What makes Frederick unique is the relationships we have with the Town and Police Department. Our genuine partnership through working together on community projects with our students makes FHS the best high school in Colorado!”

The new vehicle will be on-site at Frederick High School when students return to the classroom in August. The design will symbolize ownership and school spirit for students starting the school year with a new mascot, the Golden Eagles.

z Community Day is Saturday, September 10 at Town Park. Enjoy an evening of free activities, live music, vendors, food trucks, and fireworks! z Responsible Growth: Back in March, the Board of Trustees decided to move forward with deconstruction and final design for the new community center.

The old bean plant, located at 401 3rd Street, will be dismantled, with portions reused in the newly designed building. Our next steps include reviewing the proposals from both design firms and construction companies, followed by selecting a qualified

We are continuing to do our best with delayed timelines and yet-to-arrive supplies. Patience isn’t easy, but the result will be a much safer, cleaner, and hospitable intersection for all modes of transportation. To recap the project, The CO Blvd and Tipple Pkwy Improvement project is a major capital project impacting local traffic. Our consultant team provided a recommended

architect and contractor. We expect demolition work to begin later this year, and new construction to start in spring of 2023. z Reliable Infrastructure: The new Public Works Facility is substantially completed, and we expect public works and engineering staff to fully transition over to the new building by mid-September. The facility is located west of Mead Ponds and includes office space, maintenance shop, locker rooms, restrooms, a training room, and four service bays. The facility is designed to meet a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver Level, which provides highly efficient and cost-saving green buildings. It supports future solar power and will accommodate growth through phased-in service bays. z Public Safety: National Preparedness Month is observed each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. Now is the time to prepare an emergency kit, make a family plan, and find ways to protect your property. z Fiscal Stability: The Board of Trustees is considering an Occupational Warehouse Tax for the November 8, 2022,

election. Large warehouses and storage facilities cause a strain on town resources and do not generate sales tax to help ease the burdens they place on infrastructure and public safety. The proposed warehouse tax would not tax employees or residents. It would only apply to operators of large commercial and industrial warehouses, supply and distribution centers, and storage facilities, to ensure they pay their fair share and contribute to the sustainability of our town. z Connected Community: Join us on September 10 for our annual Community Day celebration! From 4-9:30, we’ll have live music, activities, food, vendors, cornhole, and fireworks!

As a result, the CO Blvd and Tipple Pkwy intersection is the area of highest need for the Town of Frederick. Parade & Burro Race: Stick around Downtown Frederick for the dynamic parade at 10 am and the burro race. Claim your spot early to see the fantastic floats and performances.

Our parade judges will decide who has the best float and best performance and award trophies and cash prizes. Burros will bring up the rear of the parade and line up for Frederick’s 4th annual burro race!

Centennial Park Main Stage: After your morning in Downtown, head over to Centennial Park (630 Eighth Street) for vendors, food trucks, kid’s activities, and live music throughout the day. All-day entertainment will celebrate our community, from martial arts demonstrations to local dance studios. Bands will take the stage at 2:30 pm with Denver’s best blues band, Delta Sonic. At 4 pm, prepare for the Jason Larson Band to take the stage. After them, Thumpin will perform some soul and R&B at 5:45 pm. Finally, Knot Rock ends the night with soft rock from the 1970s and 1980s.

Fireworks: Per tradition, Miners Day concludes with a spectacular fireworks display brought to you by Stevinson Lexus of Frederick.

To begin with I am very cautious and reluctant to make dental appointments. This stems from bad experiences I had as a child. I wasn’t fortunate enough to be born with a beautiful set of teeth and spent much of my elementary school years in the dentist office. Ugh! But, after reading the reviews for Oak Meadows Village Dental I took a deep breath and called for an appointment to have a complete dental assessment. Upon arrival I was quickly put at ease and welcomed as though I was a returning friend from way back when.

It didn’t take long to receive the results of the assessment and to set up a plan of action to give me a bright new smile. Each one of the 10 member staff has a job and they make things work like a well-oiled machine.

They are very careful to insure the patient is comfortable, without pain and understands every move they make.

He is from the Midwest having grown up in Iowa and graduated from Laros College in Dubuque, Iowa. Don’t let his tall, lean physic fool you. He’s a human dynamo and his personality compliments his stature. When he’s not working he enjoys being outdoors hiking and cycling. He is an avid lover of basketball having played the sport in high school and college. But the one thing that brings him the most joy in his life is his family which besides his parents consists of a fiancé and a dog.

When I asked him if he could change one thing about himself what would it be he responded by saying adapting to changes. He feels he pushes himself to the limit and needs to be more patient in keeping up with the latest technologies. His goal for his practice is to give quality care to each patient no matter what their need is.

Through resident feedback and using the Transportation Master Plan to guide priorities, the Frederick Board of Trustees approved over $4 million in the 2022 budget for capital improvement roadwork projects, including the Colorado Boulevard and Tipple Parkway Intersection Improvement Project. The intersection improvements include: z Added turn lanes z New traffic signals z New ADA curb ramps & sidewalk connections z Pedestrian crossing controls z Enhanced safety for students z Improved drainage in the area As the project progresses, lane closures, slowdowns, and a full intersection closure are expected. The Town is working with surrounding businesses, Frederick High School, and organizations on traffic flow planning during the project.

Celtic Fest Brigit is Canceled for 2022 It is with a heavy heart and much time in soul searching and discernment by both us and our board that we, in total agreement, must cancel the 4th annual Celtic Fest Brigit. We do this for the following reasons: We have noticed that after the first flush of excitement at the beginning of the festival season, promises made either would not or could not be kept on many levels. There has been a waning mentally, physically, and financially in the support of not only the Celtic community, but in communities generally that they had come to depend upon until, in some cases it disappeared altogether.

We attribute this in a major part to the two-year pandemic-induced hiatus that has affected so many of us whether it be through losses due to illness, jobs, rising cost of living, increased physical and mental stress etc. For these reasons we

found that we were unable to present Celtic Fest Brigit 2022 in a way that our friends and family, both known and unknown, deserved. To do so would not only be a detriment to us, but to them as well. And that we would not do.

The Parkinson’s diagnosis changed everything for Liz and Joe.* Needing to be closer to medical services, they made the decision to move from their long-time mountain home where they’d raised their family. North Range announces the retirement of Janis Pottorff, longtime mental health advocate and Program Director of Family Connects, which provides early childhood and family services. Beginning her work in 1978, Janis dedicated herself to the service of little ones and their families in our community; effectively transforming the way children’s mental health in Weld County is understood, funded, and supported.

Early on, Janis built her work around evidence from early childhood development research that suggests responsive relationships with caregivers are the single most protective factor that help babies develop into healthy, resilient adults. Under Janis’ direction, Family Connects grew into a network of services for children 0 to 6 that encourages families to build strong, stable environments where children can feel safe and supported. These services focus not on ‘fixing’ the child, but on supporting the adults who care for them.

Janis also worked with local, state, and national partners over four decades to identify gaps and inefficiencies in our community, which increased funding for services to promote family resilience and early brain growth for children. Janis has written hundreds of grants that supported the creation of numerous programs for children across the community, many of which have turned into sustainable services for Weld County.

“It is a blessing to watch her work. Those who have worked alongside Janis describe her impact with words like mentor, friend, ally, and partner.” said Becky Wyperd, North Range Behavioral Health Administrative Director.

As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with Infant Mental Health Endorsement IMH-E® III and a Zero to Three National Trainer, Janis trained and consulted with countless staff, community peers, and caregivers in the network of care across the community around maternal mental health, two-generational trauma, special education, and prevention work. She helped Weld County understand that early childhood development and mental health go hand in hand, thus changing the landscape of Weld County’s early childhood supports.

North Range Chief Clinical Officer, Kim Collins says of Janis, “For forty-four years, Janis has blessed the community with her humility, unmatched skill, and generous heart. Her collaborative style and training of others has resulted in countless “touches” that echo out into the community and will continue her legacy for years.”

Janis leaves Family Connects in a strong position to continue supporting Weld County Families.

Her successors developed professionally under Janis’ leadership and are as committed to carrying on the message that responsive relationships are at the core of healthy child development.

As she embarks on this new chapter of life, Janis looks forward to nurturing her relationships in new and meaningful ways.

Local 4th Grader Raises Over $1,000 for K9 Unit On Tuesday, August 23, nine-year-old Bridget Morgan delivered her donation of $1,007 to K9 Dobby of the Frederick Police Department. Accompanied by her parents and grandparents, the family spent private time with K9 Dobby and his handler, Officer Ian Austin. Bridget and Dobby immediately bonded while the two discussed his training needs and favorite ball on a rope-style toy.

Bridget Morgan is a young philanthropist passionate about dogs and supporting local police departments. After meeting Officer Austin and K9 Dobby at the Town of Frederick’s annual Halloween event, Tiny Terror Town, in 2021, she started setting her goal of raising $1000 for the Frederick Police Department K9 Unit.

“I want to help to Police and their dogs because they work hard to keep the community safe, and I want to help repay them,” said Bridget.

Bridget began fundraising in December 2021, selling slime at her school craft fair. She continued her efforts this summer by hosting four lemonade stands from June through August in front of her home. With help from her mom supervising oven duties, Bridget also offered homemade treats such as sugar cookies, snickerdoodles, peanut butter cookies, brownies, crispy rice treats, and blondies.

Entering the fourth grade, Bridget is in Girl Scouts, and loves art, reading, running, school, baking, soccer, and playing with her friends.

She is hoping to raise money for Longmont’s K9 department next summer.

Who’s Responsible for the Sewer Line?

With most home sales, the buyers have an inspection of the property done.

Sometimes, as part of the inspection, or as an additional service selected by the buyer, there is an inspection of the sewer line.

A video sewer scoping of the line is the most common inspection. This can show obstructions, debris, cracks, breaks, roots, separations, sags or other issues with the line running from the house to the main sewer line.

While sewer line problems are not very common at the time of a sale of a property, I’ve seen issues with a wide range of concerns.

Older homes tend to have more issues, but I did see a new property where the line was damaged during the construction process, and fortunately, the builder took care of it.

When sewer line issues arise during a sale, most sellers are surprised to find out that they are responsible for the sewer line all the way to the main

line. The misconception is that their responsibility ends at their property line, which it does not. So, if you have a problem with the line under the street or sidewalk before it gets to the main line, it would be your responsibility, and that can get expensive to dig up a street or sidewalk.

Issues can also occur under the basement floor and require tearing up the concrete to repair or replace a line, which ca also be costly.

If possible, have an inspector, or someone that isn’t looking to do the repair work do an evaluation of the sewer scope to get an unbiased opinion on potential issues. As with most any repairs or contracting, getting more than one estimate is very important and can save thousands of dollars.

The local sewer district, in our case, St. Vrain Sanitation District can also be of help in letting you know the location of the main line. They also have tips and advise for care and what not to put down your sewer line in order to avoid some of the potential problems.

It’s not the most exciting topic, but as with many other details of a real estate transaction, this is something that your experienced Realtor can help guide your way.

Professional Highway Maintainer Apprenticeship Available in Greeley Area The Colorado Department of Transportation is encouraging people interested in a public safety career to apply for a position through a new maintenance apprenticeship program.

This position is a two-year paid mentorship in Greeley. It includes both hands-on and classroom training. An apprentice will earn their Commercial Driver’s License and qualify as a Highway Maintenance Specialist. Starting pay is $16 per hour and includes full benefits worth nearly $16,700 per year, 11 paid holidays, paid leave, and a retirement package.

A candidate must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license. The apprentice will train and specialize in either maintenance, tunnel operations or traffic and safety. This position is based at 10601 10th St., Greeley, CO 80634.

At the end of two years, a successful apprentice may qualify for a permanent, fully operational Highway Maintenance Specialist position, which provides another pay increase upon promotion. Additional opportunities for career advancement in both leadership and technical tracks throughout the state should be anticipated.

Firestone Lease Agreement with CVPRD Approved

During the Wednesday night meeting, the Board of Trustees approved Resolution 22-101, approving a lease agreement with Carbon Valley Parks & Recreation District (CVPRD) for the use of the former Town Hall site located at 151 Grant Avenue for a Senior Center. The initial term of the lease is fifteen years and allows for two 5-year extensions.

CVPRD will pay the Town $1 per year for the duration of the lease and will be responsible for planning, designing, and constructing various site and building improvements before occupancy is allowed. In addition, CVPRD will be responsible for maintenance and utilities while occupying the building. To ensure the project is completed in a timely manner, CVPRD will be required to submit the appropriate plans for their improvements on or before March 15, 2023.

Health&WELL BEING Food for the Soul: I Will Remember Your Sins No More

I’m sure you’ve heard this 1999-2022 ph i lo s oph ic a l q u e s t i o n before: “Can God create a rock that He can’t lift?” We know God to be omnipotent, or allpowerful, yet if He cannot make a rock large enough to challenge His strength to lift it… then His creative power is in question. On the other hand, if He creates too large of a rock with His creative power but lacks the strength to heft such a colossal object, His power is inadequate. The answer to this trap is that the original question is flawed because it is a logical contradiction, the scenario is not possible.

We do need to understand that there are things which God cannot do, however. He cannot lie. He cannot sin. He cannot force a person to have LIFE through Jesus. There are a lot of things an all-powerful God cannot do, and it’s not because He doesn’t have enough power. Here we’re going to talk about something else God cannot do, and that is…

God cannot forget your sins.

Omniscience is a term that means all-knowing. We could ask another absurd question: “Is God so powerful that He can make Himself forget?” The answer is no, it is not possible for our God to willingly or unwillingly forget any fact, whatsoever. He is omniscient! The reason I’m writing about this is not because I want people to feel badly about themselves or their sin. It is not to say the Bible is wrong…because it clearly states, “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days…I will put My law within them and on their heart, I will write it…They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the LORD, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more” (Jeremiah 31:33, 34).

that what God was after was not possible under the Old Law. One of the major contrasts between the Old and New Covenants deals with sacrifice. Under the Levitical sacrificial system, there was a yearly Day of Atonement, which the Hebrew’s writer says was a “reminder of sins year by year” (10:3). God knew the blood of bulls and goats could never take away sins, and even though God forgave the ancients in anticipation of Christ’s sacrifice, these ongoing and yearly sacrifices were a reminder of sins. The people themselves were reminded of their sinfulness, and God was constantly seeing and being reminded of the nation’s sins. But a perfect sacrifice came. One that truly did accomplish perfection for God’s people, the forgiveness of sins. Hebrews 10:18 says, “Now where there is forgiveness of these things, there is no longer any offering for sin.”

And when there are no more offerings made for sin…. there also are no more reminders of sin. So, when God spoke through His prophet Jeremiah so long ago it was not that God would have amnesia concerning sins under the

New Covenant, but instead, what was in view was that in the New Covenant…. there would actually be true forgiveness obtained, noted in a most obvious way because after Christ, there would be no more offerings for sin, ever!

God may not literally forget our former sins, but He certainly is the only one who treats us as if we have never committed a single one. Oh, the blessing of justification in Christ! Thank you, Lord!

United Way of Weld County Announces Melanie Woolman as New President and CEO The United Way of Weld County Board of Directors announced today Melanie Woolman will be the next President and CEO of the organization. She will start in her new role September 15.

Woolman has most recently served as the Vice President of Community Impact for United Way of Weld County overseeing more than 30 programs and services, managing 27 staff members and 55 grants with a $5.8 million dollar budget. She is a regional and statewide leader in addressing and preventing homelessness, including leading the process of founding the federally recognized Northern Colorado Continuum of Care for Weld and Larimer counties. She’s received multiple community awards and recognitions for her impactful and visionary work. Woolman started her career with United Way in 2014, serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA. She was hired as the Community Impact Coordinator in 2015 and then served as the Director of Community Impact from 2016 to 2020.

Woolman will follow long-time leader Jeannine Truswell, who will retire this year after 36 years of loyal service to the organization.

The United Way of Weld County Board of Directors appointed a search committee of board members and community members who engaged in an extensive national search and interview process since posting the position in May. “We are very excited to have Melanie as United Way of Weld County’s next leader,” shared Sara Seely, United Way’s board chair. “She brings strong experience and proven outcomes in developing strategic and collaborative community-wide solutions that improve lives. Melanie understands the importance of the caring power of our community. Her vision, passion and leadership approach will guide the organization as we continue to build on United Way’s substantial role in Weld County.”

Woolman said the various roles she has held at United Way of Weld County have uniquely positioned her for the duties of president and CEO, and she is excited to lead the organization and serve the residents of Weld County.

“I hope to capture and sustain the growth and momentum of United Way, honor the work and culture of the past, and move confidently and boldly into the future,” Woolman said.

“United Way is uniquely poised to lead the entire Weld County community into the future.”

Health&WELL BEING Alternative Medicine: Autumn The change of seasons presents an excellent opportunity for self reflection, introspection, and renewal. The Five Element Theory of Chinese Medicine associates all energy and substance to five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Each element corresponds to a particular season. Autumn is characterized by the Metal element.

At this time of year, we take the ripe fruits and vegetables from our gardens. We pick the jewels which we carefully planted in the spring, and nurtured throughout the summer. The concept of “harvest” and “metal” are important aspects relegated to Autumn, as metal / jewels are also harvested from the ground. The concept of living life in cooperation with the seasons is the traditional Chinese view of a healthy internal balance with respect to nature.

Metal corresponds to the Lungs and Large Intestine. These are the organs of inspiration/ exhalation, and elimination. The lungs receive necessary oxygen and eliminate carbon dioxide, taking in what we need and eliminating what no longer serves a purpose. The large intestine functions to eliminate waste products. Both organs need to eliminate properly for survival. If the large intestine is not functioning properly, waste can build up and begin to rot or leak toxins into the body, and these toxins usually try to then escape through the skin . Constipation, emotional stagnation, acne, and accumulation of phlegm can result from a sluggish large intestine or lung.

The emotional process of elimination and “letting go” is not an easy practice for many people. Generally, in this culture we have the desire to hold on. We collect mementos, clothing, pictures, and we hold onto relationships, pain, ideas and values that may not be serving us anymore. The lesson of autumn and the metal element is that of trusting that letting go of what no longer serves a purpose will bring us what we need to receive.

Autumn is a good time of the year to eliminate unwanted materials, emotions, habits and beliefs. It is also a good time to take the opportunity to clean out both emotional and physical spaces. As we breathe in, we accept what is necessary and favorable, and as we breathe out, we get rid of anything that is not serving us anymore. As we go through the house and get rid of the accumulated stuff that no longer serves a purpose, we tend to think about what we value both materially and spiritually.

What is no longer valuable to us may be absolutely essential to another. The elimination process is vital to prepare for receiving what is essential.

Nat’l Adoption Day Saturday, Nov. 19, 2022

Due to COVID-19 protocols, many National Adoption Day events are virtual or in a hybrid format. We are so grateful to the many courts that held celebrations over the past two years and those that plan to hold celebrations this year.

National Adoption Day is a collective effort to raise awareness of the more than 115,000 children waiting to be adopted from foster care in the United States. A coalition of national partners — the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, Alliance for Children’s Rights and Children’s Action Network — founded National Adoption Day. On November 18, 2000, the coalition and the Freddie Mac Foundation encouraged nine cities to open their courts on or around the Saturday before Thanksgiving to finalize and celebrate adoptions from foster care.

The first National Adoption Day was inspired by the innovative efforts of Michael Nash, a former presiding judge of Los Angeles County’s Juvenile Court. He opened the court on Saturdays, engaged the volunteer efforts of court personnel and finalized adoptions to reduce the backlog of one of the busiest courts in the nation.

Policymakers, practitioners and advocates have collaborated to plan these annual events in 400 cities across the United States. To date, the dreams of more than 75,000 children in foster care have come true as part of National Adoption Day.

Commissioners Propose Collective Bargaining Amendment To Home Rule Charter, Pass Resolution Putting Question To Voters In November Weld County Commissioners passed a resolution to put a question on the November ballot to amend a portion of the Weld County Home Rule Charter with regard to collective bargaining.

In May 2022, Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed S.B. 22-230, which grants employees of Colorado counties, including home rule counties, the right to engage in collective bargaining with their board of commissioners, despite Weld County’s (and 37 other Colorado counties) opposition to the bill.

Citing significant costs to Weld County taxpayers, the county’s Director of Finance Don Warden provided a detailed report on the impact collective bargaining could have to Weld County’s budget, including an estimated $42,943,426 - $60,120,796 in additional annual costs to the county.

“In 1975, voters in Weld County voted and passed the home rule charter, which outlined how voters wanted their government run. Since that time, the voters have elected commissioners to handle the business of the county, including how to manage their tax dollars,” said Commissioner Chair Scott James. “This bill undermines the direction of the voters, takes

Sister Mary Regis Leahy April 9, 1927 to August 13, 2022

Sister Regis was born in Denver, Colorado, on April 9, 1927, to parents William Dewey and Marguerite (Mickelson) Leahy. Her baptismal name was Patricia. Her father was in highway construction after WW I; as a result, his job required the family to live in many locations across the state of Colorado.

This was where Patricia began her life as a pilgrim living in a log cabin high in the mountains at the base of Berthoud Pass, where her Dad helped construct the motor highway over the Continental Divide. From there, the family moved to Ault CO on the high plains. Patricia was in 7th grade and this was her favorite school experience.

When entering eighth grade, Patricia attended St. Peter Catholic School in Greeley. It was here she met the Sisters of Mercy. When she was ready for tenth grade, she went off to Council Bluffs, Iowa, to attend Mercy Preparatory. During this time the family settled in Frederick CO. After graduating high school at the age of 17, she returned to Frederick to live with her parents. But within a year, Patricia decided to enter religious life thus returning to Mount Loretto in Council Bluffs in 1945.

Regis was a true “pilgrim provider.” She herself was a pilgrim who provided for other pilgrims. She expressed her Vow of Service by bringing her gifts of deep spirituality and witty humor; music, poetry, and photography; insight, common sense, and abiding friendship to those she met on the way.

Sister Regis taught religion and music for 23 years to elementary students wherever there was a community need. This included Omaha, Nebraska; Kansas City, Joplin, and Independence, Missouri; Durango and Greeley, Colorado at her alma mater; and Buhl, Idaho, where she served as principal at Immaculate Conception. She earned two master’s degrees, one in education and the other in religious education.

In 1972, Sister Regis began devoting her time to religious education. She worked as Director of Religious Education at three Colorado parishes: Loveland, Greeley, and Boulder.

In 1975 Regis moved back to Frederick and was able to bring her mother back from an assisted living home to their own house. Sisters of Mercy from the area often met there for holiday meals and picnics. We always referred to this as “the Motherhouse,” because it was the only house with a “real Mother!”

In the late 1970s, Regis and three other women started the Tri-Area Volunteer Ambulance Service to serve her hometown and two other neighboring communities.

Two EMTs and a driver rotated a 24-hour shift once a week, alerted to an accident by the communication radios they handed off every 24 hours. Regis rotated Thursday as her shift for six years. Later she served another six years on the Ambulance Board.

She captures in poetry her experiences as a pilgrim providing for other pilgrims, describing night rides we’ve never experienced and night meetings we’ve all shared. The title is OLD EMT’s DON’T DIE.

I remember when my night control was radio and lights and sirens to a scene.

Hurling through time we went to give more time and some small comfort to a country pilgrim.

That was in the noontime of my life and now I tend to matters of consequence here in life’s evening….

Oh, dear I hope this board meeting won’t last until midnight again.

In 1986, she was asked to serve the Archdiocese of Denver as the Media Center Coordinator for Northern Catholic Education Services where for 15 years her gifts as a pilgrim provider influenced educators in ways to share the Good News with kiddos ranging from tots to teens. During this time, she also worked as Weld County Coordinator for Mercy Housing headquartered in Denver. She coordinated dealings between the bank, the construction crews, and those who would have the joy of home ownership. Ten houses of varying sizes were built in her hometown of Frederick.

Regis’s Master Gardener finished paying her mortgage on the last of these homes just before Regis moved to Omaha. Oversight was an important component of Regis’s job. One evening as she was touring the day’s progress, she discovered that the excavation for the foundation was not on the property that Mercy Housing owned, but the lot next to it. She called the head of construction and said, “I don’t care how you do this, but have that hole filled in by morning!”

Regis also served on the Frederick

Planning Commission, which oversaw the growth of the community, the Interfaith Task Force which maintained a food bank for the needy, and “Bags of Love” which contracted with the Weld County Sheriff’s Department to provide personal and comfort items for children of all ages who were removed from their home because of drugs or other abuse situations. As a cancer survivor, Regis participated in the American Cancer Society Carbon Valley Relay for Life.

She started a Scripture group of women, not all Catholic, who gathered at her home on Sunday morning to enjoy treats and break open the Word of next week’s Scripture readings.

Regis loved her pets: “Miss Molly from Kansas City” who as a kitten attempted to walk on the water of Regis’s fish tank and her two dogs: “Pepi” short for Pepito and “Doxy” short for “Doxology.”

She loved gardening and as a pilgrim provider stationed a chair in front of her gate to hold fruits, vegetables, and a sign to share her produce. Neighbors would come by to tell Regis what recipes they had put together and the FedEx driver stopped for a tomato to go with his lunch. There is a picture of Regis the pilgrim provider in the front yard of her little home in Frederick with the chair, the produce, and the sign.

In case you don’t recognize Regis, she is portrayed as a polar bear standing in the front yard. The original painting appeared on a calendar by Regis’s friend, Barbara Stone who is an international artist and polar bear explorer, and who for over 35 years has produced a calendar which each month features polar bears.

Regis moved to Omaha about a year ago just before her 94th birthday. She continued to Bless those around her with prayer, a smile, a twinkle in her eye, and a humorous, witty remark.

Bear Grylls Encourages People to S-T-O-P Fighting Against Fear

Bear Grylls, a former British Special Forces soldier and TV star on the survival adventure series MAN VS. WILD, recently shared a helpful acronym to address fear in our everyday lives.

“Fear is a huge part of my life, it’s part of my job,” he told NPR in a recent interview.

“Fear isn’t an enemy. It’s something that nature gives you to allow you to stay sharp and perform well and to have all your senses firing.”

Grylls said that the goal in life should not be to avoid fear but to train it like any other muscle.

“When you’re thrown into a scary situation, that fear muscle isn’t strong, so you get kind of an overload of adrenaline,” he explained. “And an overload of adrenaline is always going to create a kind of a fog of war.”

To help people and himself fight off that “fog,” Grylls uses a version of the acronym, S-T-O-P, created by psychologist Marsha M. Linehan.

S – Stop and step back | T – Take a break | O – Observe | P – Plan “If I had to choose three things [to bring on any expedition], I would make them a resourceful spirit, a determined heart, and a courageous attitude – that you’re going to walk towards the difficult stuff and do whatever it takes to get out of that,” Grylls added.
