Powered Paramotorists: From Friday, June 26 through Sunday, June 28, Frederick in Flight will be held at Centennial Park under a special event permit. During this period, the Town of Frederick has the authority to approve or deny any use of the park.

When Grief Lives Next Door In small communities, we often celebrate life together. We show up for graduations, weddings, new babies, football games, and ribbon cuttings. We wave at each other in grocery store aisles and recognize familiar trucks parked downtown. But one of the greatest tests of a community is not how it celebrates.

It’s how it responds when someone’s world falls apart.

Many families in our Carbon Valley communities have experienced heartbreaking loss. Some losses have been sudden. Others came after long illnesses and exhausting care-giving journeys. Behind many front doors are grieving spouses, parents, grandparents, children, friends, and neighbors trying to figure out how to keep breathing while carrying unbearable pain.

Grief is isolating. Even people surrounded by others can feel forgotten after the funeral ends and daily life moves on for everyone else.

I’ll never forget staring out the living room window watching moms push children in strollers, a family piling into the car for an outing, and people walking their dogs. Why wouldn’t everyone just stop for a minute and realize my daughter was gone forever.

How did they immediately get back to life as normalcy when I couldn’t even figure out what day it was?

That’s why community matters so much.

Most grieving people don’t need perfect words. They need consistent love. They need neighbors willing to step

closer instead of backing away because they feel awkward or unsure what to say.

The bereaved need reminders they’re not carrying their sorrow alone.

Scripture reminds us in Galatians 6:2 (NLT), “Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ.”

Sometimes being Jesus to hurting people looks less like preaching and more like quietly showing up with compassion, patience, and practical help.

Many grieving people remember simple acts of kindness for decades. A handwritten note. Weeds pulled in a garden. A text on a difficult anniversary.

Someone willing to sit in silence and listen without trying to fix everything.

Love becomes healing when it is lived out consistently.

Here are six meaningful ways neighbors and friends can support those who are grieving: 1. Keep checking in after the funeral. Support often fades after the first few weeks, but grief usually intensifies once the crowds disappear.

A simple text saying, “I’ve been thinking about you today,” can mean more than we realize.

2. Mention the loved one by name. Many grieving people fear their loved one will be forgotten. Sharing a memory or speaking their name reminds them their person mattered and is still remembered.

3. Offer specific help. Instead of saying, “Let me know if you need anything,” offer something concrete.

children. Run errands. Grieving people are often too overwhelmed to ask for help.

4. Remember important dates.

Birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and the anniversary of a death can be incredibly painful. Mark reminders on your calendar and reach out during those difficult seasons.

5. Don’t try to rush grief.

Statements like “everything happens for a reason” or “you need to move on” often deepen pain. Grief has no timetable. Compassion listens more than it speaks.

6. Stay present long term. Some people disappear because they feel uncomfortable around sorrow. But one of the greatest gifts you can give a grieving person is your continued presence months and years later.

Romans 12:15 (NLT) says, “Be happy with those who are happy, and weep with those who weep.”

That verse captures what healthy community looks like.

In a world that often feels increasingly disconnected, our small towns still have something precious: the ability to truly care for one another. We still notice when someone is missing. We still know each other’s stories. We still have opportunities to love our neighbors in tangible ways.

Sometimes the most powerful ministry is refusing to let grieving people suffer alone.

Nicholas Bartz left this world four years ago, and nothing in our lives has been the same since. Not a single day passes without us thinking of him and missing him deeply.

Nicholas was a bright light to everyone who knew him. He was kind, loving, funny, and unforgettable. His presence brought comfort, joy, and laughter into the lives of so many people, and his absence is felt every single day.

We remember not only the heartbreak of losing him, but the incredible person he was and the love he gave so freely. Nicholas was always there for his family and friends, offering support, encouragement, and compassion without hesitation.

Though he is gone from our sight, he will forever remain in our hearts. We ask all who knew Nicholas to remember the beautiful soul he was and the light he brought into this world.

Now Accepting Applications for the Vacant Firestone Board of Trustees Position The Town of Firestone Board of Trustees is now accepting applications from Firestone residents who are willing to fill a vacant Trustee position. This position will fill a vacancy until the next Regular Municipal Election in November 2026.

The Town of Firestone operates as a council-manager form of government.

This system of local government combines the strong political leadership of elected officials through a council (Board of Trustees) with the managerial experience of an appointed local government manager.

As an elected body, the Mayor and Board of Trustees are the Town’s policymakers, providing overall policy and direction.

The Board of Trustees conducts regular meetings on the third Wednesday of every month, and Work Sessions are scheduled on the second Wednesday of each month or as needed.

32nd Annual Pig Roast Family Event Rinn United Methodist Church, established in 1905 and celebrating 120 years, is hosting its 32nd pig roast from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on June 13th this year. Eating will be outside under a big canopy as other years. If weather is bad it will be moved indoors.

Entertainment will be by Dean Himes who offers a mix of country and popular songs and has been inducted into the Colorado Country Music Hall of Fame and will have CDs available for purchase.

Our classic menu includes pulled pork and beef, baked beans, coleslaw, pasta salad, potato salad, dessert and a beverage. The price for the meal is $15 for adults and $6 for children 5 – 10.

We will again have a bake sale inside the church.

Frederick-Firestone Fire District Receives National Recognition for Budget Excellence The Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District (FFFD) is proud to announce it has been awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), a national organization representing public finance professionals across North America.

This prestigious honor recognizes the District’s commitment to excellence in government budgeting and reflects the dedicated work of its governing board and staff in maintaining the highest standards of financial planning and transparency.

“Earning the GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Award reflects the financial discipline and transparency that the Frederick-Firestone Fire District owes to the residents and businesses we serve,” said FFFD Fire Chief Jeremy Young. “This recognition belongs to our Finance Director Mike Cummins and our entire administrative team, whose commitment to excellence in public financial management ensures that every taxpayer dollar entrusted to us is managed with integrity and clearly accounted for. Firestone’s Sagebrush Park Playground Replacement Project A contractor for the Firestone Parks Division will close the playground at Sagebrush Park (10645 Echo St.) and start the replacement project next week, May 4, 2026. The work is expected to take 4 weeks, and the playground will reopen once it is finished.

The current playground equipment at Sagebrush Park is nearly 20 years old and has reached the end of its useful life, with areas beginning to rust, materials weakened, and outdated design features.

The new equipment will meet current safety regulations and provide inclusive play opportunities for children of all abilities.

2026 Colorado Fallen Firefighters Memorial Remembrance Ceremony On Saturday, May 16th, members of our Honor Guard and Frederick-Firestone Fire District crews attended the Colorado Fallen Firefighters Memorial ceremony as Community Risk Reduction Specialist Kristen Hayes’ name was formally added to the memorial wall.

Kristen’s compassion, dedication, and commitment to serving others left a lasting impact on our district and the community she cared so deeply for. While one year has passed since her loss, her legacy continues to live on through the relationships she built, the lives she touched, and the work she inspired.

We remain honored to remember Kristen alongside firefighters and EMS professionals from across Colorado who gave so much in service to others. Our thoughts continue to be with her family, friends, and everyone who had the privilege of serving beside her.

The team is also preparing presentations for the Planning Commission and Board of Trustees. Once adopted, the plan will help guide the future of parks, recreation, open space, and trails in Mead. Residents can continue to stay informed and provide input through the PROST website.

Free Weld County Electronic Waste Recycling Event Coming to Frederick Weld County residents have a free opportunity this spring to recycle old or unwanted electronics through the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) program. Hosted by the Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment, the event takes place in Frederick.

The event will follow on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Frederick High School, 5690 Tipple Pkwy in Longmont.

Advance reservations are encouraged through the HHW website. Drive-up participants may be accepted as space allows, however, waiting times may be longer if event capacity is reached.

Accepted items include a wide range of electronic devices, such as computer monitors, laptops, televisions, microwaves and much more. Weld County To Host Free Health Fair Focused On Chronic Disease Prevention The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment will host a health fair this spring and summer to help residents better understand their health and connect with resources that support chronic disease prevention and wellness.

The health fair will offer a variety of free screenings, including blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes (A1c), oxygen/pulse, loneliness screening, facial sun damage screening, InBody body composition, colorectal cancer screening kit, and blood lead testing for children. Health department staff and community partners will also be available to provide referrals and information about programs, services, and additional screenings that can help residents take proactive steps toward better health such as radon test kits (by mail) and Dementia resources.

“The Health Fair is a simple way for residents to come out and learn more about their health and about the resources available in a close community,” said Community Health Chronic Disease Prevention Manager Kelly Martinez. “Our goal is to help people get screened and connect them with support that can make a difference.”

Aims Community College Honors John W. Haefeli with 2026 Distinguished Fellow Award The Aims Community College Board of Trustees proudly awarded John W. Haefeli posthumously with the 2026 Distinguished Fellow Award.

His wife, Delia Haefeli, accepted the award on his behalf during the afternoon commencement ceremony on May 15. “John was especially grateful for the opportunity to serve on the Board of Trustees,” she said. “He believed Aims to be a truly special place, which cultivated many educational opportunities for its students. “ Haefeli was selected for a lifetime dedicated to education, student success and community service. A respected educator, coach and public servant, he spent decades championing learning opportunities for students across Northern Colorado. He served on the Aims Board of Trustees from 2023 until his passing in 2025.

“The Distinguished Fellow Award recognizes individuals who embody the values and mission of Aims Community College,” said Dr. Leah L. Bornstein, Aims Community College CEO and President. “John Haefeli’s lifelong dedication to students, education and community service made him an exceptional choice for this honor. His impact continues to be felt throughout Northern Colorado and the Aims community.”

Throughout his career, Haefeli served as an educator and coach, mentored countless students and athletes, and remained deeply involved in civic and educational organizations throughout the region. He also served on the Greeley-Evans School District 6 Board of Education from 2013 to 2021 and dedicated more than 40 years to officiating collegiate and national-level athletics.

Aims Program Director of Student Life, Janet Chase, nominated Haefeli for this honor. “He exemplifies the spirit and intent of the Distinguished Fellow Award through unwavering service, leadership and devotion to education.”

Colleagues and community members remembered Haefeli as a passionate advocate for students who believed deeply in creating inclusive learning environments where “all means all.” His leadership, integrity and compassion left a lasting impression on students, educators and community members alike. “John did not simply teach; he invited students to rise to their fullest potential,” Chase said.

Haefeli’s time on the Aims Board of Trustees may have been brief, but his impact on the board was impactful. “His passion for student success was evident in every board discussion, every decision, and every interaction with students and employees,” Chase said. “He approached trusteeship not as a ceremonial role, but as an active extension of his lifelong mission to elevate learners and strengthen educational opportunity. As a trustee, he continued to serve as a visible example of integrity, preparation, humility and heart.”

The Distinguished Fellow Award honors individuals who demonstrate longstanding efforts to advance higher education, champion student learning and service, and strengthen the reputation and relationships of Aims Community College. Our real estate market has seen substantial increases in prices over the past few years as well as a limited number of homes available on the market. This has led to an increase in practices that can be detrimental to uninformed sellers. Often times these are the elderly, people that have been in there home many years, estates, or distressed owners.

With all the information that is available on line, it is fairly easy to target these groups of potentially vulnerable homeowners.

One way this is happening is that an investor or agent contacts a homeowner who has been in the home a long time and likely has a lot of equity. The investor may offer a cash, quick sale at what appears to be a good price to the uninformed seller, even though it may be tens or hundreds of thousands below the actual market price. With the home contracted at a below market price, the investor then would assign (flip) the contract to another buyer for the market price.

Another thing that can be detrimental to a seller is an agent or potential buyer wanting to purchase the home before it goes on the market which often times happens after a death or divorce. While there may be some benefits to the seller, anytime you limit the exposure of a property to the market, the likely effect is to sell for a lower price. Getting your property exposed to the entire marketplace and all the potential buyers is the best way for you to get

the best deal for yourself in price, proceeds, inclusions and timing.

These practices are not necessarily illegal or unethical, but may be victimizing an unsuspecting or uninformed homeowner. Don’t be pressured or rushed into making a decision. Check with a local Realtor to get a 2nd opinion on what your property is worth. Listen to your gut instincts.

Be wary of anyone that approaches you about a sale you weren’t planning on. Talk to friends or family to get a reference for a Realtor that can give you trusted advice. If you are not sure if the person is a licensed broker, check them out at www.dora.colorado.gov/dre.

If you consider their offer, get advice or representation for yourself.

Have a Realtor or attorney on your side. The investor that is making the offer is looking out for their best interests, not yours. If they aren’t licensed brokers, they don’t have to follow the rules of the Real Estate Commission and if they are not Realtors, they don’t have a Code of Ethics to follow.

Remember, exposing a property to the entire market is the best way for a seller to know that they’ve received the best price for the market.

Firestone’s Water Tank #2 Project During Wednesday night’s meeting, the Board approved an agreement with Kimley-Horn for professional design engineering services related to the Town’s proposed 3.0 milliongallon elevated water storage tank and associated transmission improvements identified in the 2026 Potable Water Master Plan.

The elevated storage tank is a critical infrastructure project intended to improve system pressure, increase water storage capacity, enhance fire flow capabilities, and strengthen overall system redundancy and reliability. The project was identified as the highest-priority capital improvement in the Water Master Plan to address existing system deficiencies and support future growth.

The Central Park site was previously selected by the Board as the preferred location for the tank due to its hydraulic performance, system integration benefits, and ability to support long-term operational needs and public safety.

Let’s do Bible Study: Vision of the White Sheet Begin by reading Acts 10-11. Cornelius is a ‘God-fearer’ who worships with and gives charity to the local Jewish community. While praying God tells him that both of these things are good and that he needs to speak to Peter. Cornelius sends aides to go find Peter in Jaffa. Meanwhile Peter is praying and sees a vision, a white sheet full of unclean animals (Lev. 11 & Deut. 14). A voice says “Get up Peter, kill and eat” to which Peter replies, “I have never, eaten anything unclean” This is approximately 3-10 years after the ascension of Jesus, and still Peter is following the commands about clean and unclean foods. (Mal. 3:6, Heb. 13:8, Jam 1:17). Peter is confused about what the vision means (10:17). A spirit says to him: “Go with the men who are coming.” Then there’s a knock at the door, Cornelius’s aides had arrived. When Peter arrives at Cornelius’s house he says: “You know that it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with a foreigner…. but God has shown me not to call any man unclean.” The Bible never says that it is illegal for a Jew to hang out with a non-Jew, this is actually Oral Law. After hearing Cornelius’ vision, Peter explains his: “I most certainly understand now that God is not one to show partiality… anyone who fears Him… is welcome to Him (10:34). Peter tells the house of Cornelius about Jesus and they are saved. When the Jewish believers in Judea hear that Gentiles had been saved, they questioned Peter. He used the vision of the white sheet to explain that Godfearing Gentiles can be included in Salvation (11:1-18). At no point in time does Peter eat unclean food, or disobey the commands of God. This story is about Gentile inclusion, not invalidating the Old Testament. When you call 988, you have three options: Press 1 to connect with the Veteran Crisis Hotline Press 2 to receive help in Spanish The third option which everyone else can use, is to remain on the line to connect with a local crisis center. You’ll also have the option to talk to a trained specialist with similar experiences. As of July 17, 2025, the national 988 system will streamline its call routing. All help seekers—including members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community who previously used the “Press 3” option—will continue to receive affirming, compassionate, and confidential support from trained specialists.
