When Farmers Knocked, Agfinity Answered: How Mead Agronomy Reopened its Doors

Since 1903, Agfinity has been a trusted partner for farmers and ranchers, delivering products and solutions- from crop assistance and livestock feed to propane and fuel for families and local businesses. Rooted in agriculture and community support, Agfinity remains committed to helping farmers succeed year after year.

One branch of Agfinity is the Mead Agronomy Department. The team operates out of a building built in 2007. One distinguishing feature of the building is the tall blue elevator that manually transfers fertilizer into huge storage bins. Every part of the building was designed and built to meet the needs of the farming community surrounding the small town of Mead.

The building was built to serve the farming community, but what is truly

amazing is the people who work there. At Mead Agfinity, loyalty runs deep. Two of the team members, Steve the manager and Greg, have been with the company for over 25 years, with Greg holding the record for longest tenure. At the front desk, Megan loves sharing the story of JoEllen, saying, “When I started at Mead Agronomy, I had big shoes to fill. JoEllen trained me, and after 40 years with the company, she retired.

I want to follow her lead and dedicate that much time here too!”

Over the years the employees saw many changes in the farming community and in the company itself. The hardest change came in 2021 when the team received the heartbreaking news: the Mead office would be closing at the end of the season.

Megan had only been with the department for 3 short years, and the news was hard to take. Steve and the others could keep their job, but the store front would be closed to the public. The only silver lining? A role opened in Agfinity’s Energy Department, and Megan was offered the chance to stay with the company.

Years went by and the office doors remained locked.

But the farmers who had always supported Agfinity didn’t stop coming to the little Mead office. They knocked on the door till someone would let them in. They called headquarters and explained the need for the office to re-open. They would call Steve day after day and make plans to have products brought to their farm. Agfinity was their cooperative, and they weren’t giving up on it!

In 2023, Agfinity appointed a new CEO- Dan Riddle, a knowledgeable leader who had spent many years in the Agfinity Feed Department. Dan saw opportunity: If farmers were still knocking on Mead’s doors, why were they closed?

Changes started happening quickly.

Dan promoted Aaron Smith to VP of Agronomy, and by November of 2023, after nearly three years of locked doors, Mead Agronomy was officially open once again!

Megan is back at the front desk with a

smile, and her new favorite story to share: “It is all thanks to our customers and their persistence that farmers, landscapers, as well as the community can visit Mead Agronomy Department today!”

The future is bright for the Mead Department, and their cooperative spirit is stronger than ever. When You’re Tired of Being Brave I’ve been brave for so long that I don’t remember choosing it.

Bravery became my default setting at a young age. I didn’t sign up for it or raise my hand and volunteer. It appeared in circumstances I didn’t choose. Loss, disappointment, unanswered prayers, and the accumulation of grief that hangs heavily on my shoulders.

By the time I reached my mid-forties, bravery felt less like a virtue and more like a requirement. Get up. Keep going. Smile through everything. Keep trusting God. I used to think courage was a spiritual muscle I had to keep flexing. I feared that if I let down my guard, admitting how weary I felt, I’d disappoint God. He’d already carried me through so much. Shouldn’t I be stronger by now?

But there are seasons when even the strongest faith gets tired. And Scripture shares the perfect story.

It comes from the life of Elijah. After a dramatic victory over false prophets and a bold stand for God, Elijah collapsed under the weight of exhaustion and fear. He ran into the wilderness, sat down under a broom tree, and asked God to take his life.

Not because he lacked faith, but because he was spent and afraid.

The story is recorded in 1 Kings 19, and it’s striking what God doesn’t say.

God doesn’t rebuke Elijah. He doesn’t lecture him about perseverance or remind

him of his calling. Instead, God lets him sleep. He sends an angel with food and water. He lets Elijah sleep and eat again.

Then God speaks God cares for Elijah.

Like Elijah, there came a time when I realized I wasn’t afraid of hardship—I was simply tired of carrying it.

I’ve lived long enough to know the cost of prolonged bravery. I’ve learned that being strong for years on end drains the soul. When my children died—years apart, losses layered one on top of another—I learned how to function while shattered.

I kept showing up. I learned how to keep moving because stopping felt dangerous.

Bravery, in those seasons, wasn’t heroic. It was survival.

Later, when my family faced other unexpected upheavals: strained relationships, broken dreams, futures rewritten. I experienced a deep exhaustion.

Not the sharp pain of grief, but the dull ache of endurance. I thought, How long, Lord? My hope felt heavy.

Faith, I’m learning, doesn’t require constant endurance without rest. That idea we sometimes mistake for maturity. We assume strong Christians never collapse, never question, never need to be held. But Scripture repeatedly shows God meeting His people not at the peak of their bravery, but at the point of their exhaustion.

Hulu Is Shutting Down—What It Means For You

The Walt Disney Company is making a major change to its streaming strategy.

The company announced that the standalone Hulu app will be discontinued in 2026, forcing over 50 million subscribers to move to an updated platform centered on Disney+.

While Hulu content will remain available on Disney+, the Hulu app that customers know is being phased out.

“Today we are announcing a major step forward in strengthening our streaming offering by fully integrating Hulu into Disney+,” Disney CEO Bob Iger and CFO Hugh Johnston said statement last year. “This will create an impressive package of entertainment, pairing the highest-caliber brands and franchises, great general entertainment, family programming, news and industry-leading live sports content in a single app.”

Hulu has been around for almost two decades, making it’s elimination surprising to some. MSN explained that “Hulu began in 2007 as a joint venture between NBCUniversal, News Corp (Fox), and later Disney, offering a free, ad-supported way to stream recent TV episodes online.”

Changes to Hulu’s accessibility began last month.

On Dec. 9, Disney eliminated the “Hulu with Disney+ add-on” option, making Disney+ the only platform to access Hulu’s content from.

The Disney+ website still advertises bundle options based on what kind of content viewers want. Currently customers can purchase a Disney+, Hulu, HBO Max bundle for $19.99/month, a Disney+; Hulu, ESPN bundle for $29.99/month; or a Disney+, Hulu, ESPN “premium” bundle for $38.99/month.

Last year, Disney announced that users “will begin to see further integrations of Hulu across the Disney+ app as part of an ongoing and iterative slate of product updates on the homepage and beyond.” The company added, “These enhancements are just the beginning, with additional updates planned in the lead-up to the launch of a unified app experience next year.”

In a ScreenRant post sharing the news to Instagram, people in the comment section expressed mixed feelings about the changes. “Sooo how will this affect my bundle cause I doubt you’re making it cheaper,” one person said. Another added, “Hulu is the better app it’s a shame they don’t use its interface for Disney plus.”

However, Iger believes these changes will overall be a benefit.

“By creating a truly differentiated streaming offering, we will be providing subscribers tremendous choice, convenience, quality, and enhanced personalization,” Iger and Johnston said. “This will enhance our ability to continue to grow profitability and margins in our entertainment streaming business through expected higher engagement, lower churn, and advertising revenue potential, as well as operational efficiencies that over time may result in savings that we can reinvest back into the business.”

There was a season when I finally gave myself permission to stop being brave for a while. I didn’t quit believing or walk away from God. I simply stopped pretending I was okay. I stopped forcing myself to work when my soul needed to sit. I asked trusted people for prayers. I chose to believe that God loves me without requiring performance.

That season changed my understanding of courage. Sometimes it looks like endurance and pressing forward. Other times, it’s a strength that requires lying down and letting God do the carrying.

As we move into a new year, I feel this message more deeply than ever. New Year’s often comes with pressure. Fresh goals. Renewed expectations. Subtle reminders that we should be stronger, better, by now. But I’m learning to enter the year differently.

Here are a few signs I’ve learned to recognize when spiritual exhaustion and societal expectations are setting in:  I feel numb rather than sad or tired.  I keep saying “I’m fine” without thinking.  I avoid quiet because I’m afraid of what I’ll feel.

If any of those sounds familiar, remember, “God is not disappointed in you.”

He doesn’t require bravery every day. He invites honesty. He offers rest. He meets us with gentleness when strength runs thin.

Jesus Himself modeled this. He withdrew to quiet places. He slept in boats during storms. He wept openly. He didn’t rush pain, and He never shamed weakness.

If you need it, here’s a permission slip you can carry into the coming months.

You’re allowed to rest. You’re encouraged

Civil penalties for speed violations on Colorado Highway 119 to begin Jan. 12

CDOT’s Colorado Speed Enforcement Program cuts high speeds Starting Monday, Jan. 12, the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Colorado Speed Enforcement Program will start issuing $75 civil penalties to drivers exceeding the speed limit by 10+ mph in the CO 119 Safety, Mobility & Bikeway Project work zone in Boulder County. The move marks the next phase of the safety program, designed to curb excessive speed, which is the leading contributor to traffic crashes and fatalities in Colorado. Warnings in the corridor will remain active until civil penalties begin.

The transition from warnings to civil penalties follows a required 30day warning period. The warning period on CO 119 has been active since July 2025, providing motorists plenty of time to adjust to the new program.

Once civil penalties begin, any violation captured by automated cameras will result in a mailed notice of violation to the registered owner of the vehicle, who is legally responsible for the penalty regardless of who was driving. Recipients have 45 days to pay or dispute the violation by visiting coloradospeedenforcement.com.

Failure to take action may result in a Notice of Civil Penalty Assessment, Hearing Officer Final Order, and possible collection action, as provided by law.

“Average speeds starkly decreasing on CO 119 means the Colorado Speed Enforcement Program is already doing its job to increase safety in the corridor,” said CDOT Chief Engineer Keith Stefanik. “Civil penalties are meant to curb the behavior of speeding drivers, not punish them. By moderating speed, we can save lives — plain and simple.”

Preliminary data shows the program is achieving its intended results even before penalties begin. Since the program began, high speeds have dropped more than 80% in the CO 119 work zone. Average speeds along the Diagonal Highway now sit between 53-56 mph. In the first month of the program, average speeds dropped by an average of 8 mph, demonstrating how automated enforcement can change dangerous driving behavior.

During 2025, data shows that work zone crashes in Colorado caused 532 injuries, a nearly 12% decrease from 2024 (602). Additionally, there have been eight work zone fatalities so far in 2025, marking a 73% decrease since last year (30). While this data is promising, there is still work to be done on our most vulnerable roads, CDOT says. Since 2015, there have been 129 work zone-related crash fatalities in the state.

Since the Colorado Speed Enforcement Program launched on CO 119, between Boulder and Longmont, there has been an 80% decrease in speeding within the work zone.

As of Dec. 8, CDOT has issued 34,050 warning notices to first-time violators on CO 119 during the warning phase. These notices carried no monetary penalty and served solely to alert drivers to the new enforcement zone.

Nationwide research has demonstrated that automated enforcement programs effectively combat high speeds among drivers. According to the Federal Highway Administration, point-to-point speed cameras reduce roadway injuries and fatalities by

20% to 37%. Several polls have also shown that there is often broad public support for the use of camera technology as a means of neutral, consistent enforcement.

Stopping distance, which is the distance between the moment a driver perceives a hazard to the point where the vehicle achieves a complete stop, increases exponentially with speed. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), stopping distance quadruples when speed doubles. At 60 mph, approximate stopping distance is 345 feet, over 36% longer than the distance required at 50 mph (240 feet), per the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). When drivers must navigate a work zone with shifting lanes, sharp curves and unpredictable obstacles, that distance could mean the difference between a close call and a tragedy.

Enforcement sites are selected based on considerations of crash and speed data indicating high-risk corridors, and the viability of in-person law enforcement. CDOT selected CO 119 as the first corridor to launch the program based on a variety of factors related to safety during the construction of the Safety, Mobility & Bikeway project. With traffic expected to increase on the corridor, the project will make necessary improvements to the roadway alongside multimodal integrations, including bus rapid transit and a continuous bike path. Construction began in September 2024 and is expected to conclude in 2027.

About the Colorado Speed Enforcement Program In 2024, speeding was the most common cause of fatal crashes in Colorado. The dangers of speeding are especially high in work zones, where challenging conditions and vulnerable roadside workers create hazardous circumstances. The Colorado Department of Transportation’s Colorado Speed Enforcement Program aims to reduce speed-related crashes and fatalities on Colorado roads and improve safety for drivers, road workers, vulnerable road users and law enforcement. Using Automated Vehicle Identification Systems (AVIS) in high-risk, CDOT-owned corridors, cameras identify vehicles traveling an average of 10 mph or more over the posted speed limit and automatically issue $75 civil penalties to the registered owner of the vehicle. The program will start first on CO 119 and is expected to expand into school zones and other high-risk corridors in the future. I wish for all of you and the town to have a safe and prosperous 2026.  In 2026, the town will have three overriding goals to maintain. I want to tell you about the first this month.  The first will that of water source diversification, resiliency, acquisition and distribution. As with all things in life, water is one of the  

 As we step into a new year, I want to thank our residents and businesses for the support and partnership that continues to move Frederick forward. Each January gives us a moment to reflect on our progress and set our sights on the work ahead, and I’m proud of how this community continues to show what “Built on What Matters” truly means.  In 2025, our community accomplished some truly meaningful milestones. The opening of the long-anticipated Silverstone Marketplace brought new businesses and energy to our local economy. We continued to put Frederick’s future first by adopting

Beyond Main Street, O’Reilly Auto Parts is slated to open near QuikTrip in 2026. As additional retail space is leased, Main Street’s expanding mix of shops and restaurants continues to create more opportunities for dining, shopping, and community connections.  Reliable Infrastructure: Work continues on the 3rd Street and Welker Avenue intersection improvements, a key project in the heart of downtown. The upgrades include left- and right-turn lanes on all approaches, medians, full sidewalk connections, drainage improvements, two railroad crossings, and a new traffic signal.

Although the project has experienced delays, construction continues.

As an essential route for both daily commuters and pedestrians, these improvements will enhance traffic flow, safety, and accessibility. The project is expected to be completed in 2026.  Public Safety: The Mead Police Department encourages residents to register their security cameras with Flock. Registering cameras such as Ring or Blink adds a pin to the local camera map, helping law enforcement know where cameras are and who to

contact if footage is needed. Agencies do not have live access to your cameras, and you decide what to share.  Fiscal Stability: The Town of Mead’s budget has been approved and provides a roadmap for responsible management of expenses and revenues. This year, the Town will focus on longterm planning to guide growth over the next decade and explore sustainable funding options for priority projects, ensuring resources are available to support community needs and initiatives.  Connected Community: Coffee with the Mayor resumes on January 3 at the Mead Community Center from 8 to 10 a.m. This event is held on the first Saturday of every month and gives residents a chance to ask questions and engage with town leadership. The first town-wide event of 2026 will be the Egg Hunt at Ames Park, scheduled for later this spring. most, if not the most important subject that we deal with. Like the human body, water is the most important thing for life to occur. Yes, there are other elements that complete the job, but without water, nothing happens. This is also true for the life of cities and towns. Without the water to sustain the life of a town, it cannot survive.  This year the towns top priority will be to further this goal. In the past, the town has relied completely on only one source of water, that being the water from the Colorado-Big Thompson Project(C-BT).

The town owns this water, and it is distributed to us from Central Weld County Water District. Since 2020, the town has been working on a Water Action Plan to diversify the towns water sources by building a water plant. This plant is on property that the town owns on the Northeast corner of Colorado Blvd and Zinnia (CR-26). This plant at this time can produce up to 1.5 million gallons a day to Firestone residents. The town is also working to develop water storage and other

water infrastructure. All this new storage and infrastructure will be paid by new development that comes to Firestone. Yes, there is a portion of your water bill at goes into this infrastructure upgrade, but it is a very small amount and was put into place decades ago.  This last year has proven to the Board that it is imperative that we continue to diversify of water sources, due to the contract dispute between the town and Central Weld County Water District.

Relying on only one source of water puts the town at the mercy of others who we cannot control. I for one want the town to be able to control our own destiny. Can we work with other partners to achieve this goal? Of course, but we do not want to be doing so in a disadvantaged position. The town and Central Weld County Water District will work out our differences. But this situation was needed, as it put a spotlight on how precarious a single source of water can be.

By adding a Community Liaison Officer, expanding behavioral-health–focused police services, and investing in road improvements, we worked to ensure that every resident feels supported and can travel our Town safely and smoothly.  This past year, your voices guided us. The successful 2025 National Community Survey and the launch of the Go Outdoors Frederick 2050 Plan reflect our commitment to thoughtful planning shaped by the people who call Frederick home. At the same time, downtown continues to blossom with beautification and revitalization efforts. Our new Music in the Park concert series brought joy to the heart of the town, and record participation in our tree program added beauty to our natural spaces.  2025 was a year defined by partnership and progress.

None of this would have been possible without the support of our

community and the dedication of our incredible staff.  Looking ahead, 2026 will bring new opportunities and important decisions for our Town. We will continue investing in mobility and transportation - maintaining our roads, expanding connectivity, and advancing long-term planning that supports responsible growth. We will also build on our efforts to foster a vibrant and thriving downtown while increasing opportunities for businesses and employment.  Most importantly, we begin this year with a shared commitment to community. Whether it’s volunteering, supporting local businesses, attending events, or sharing your input on Town projects, you play a crucial role in shaping Frederick’s future. Your voice matters, and I encourage you to stay engaged throughout the year. Household Waste

Regardless of if you are thinking of making a move, or just doing a bit of purging, it is a good idea to get rid of unused or 1999-2026 outdated household hazardous waste. Getting rid of things like cleaners, paints, batteries (from hearing aid to AAA to car batteries), aerosols, motor oil & filters, antifreeze, pesticides and other household items will not only make a potential move easier but will free up much needed storage space. Many products can cause harm to people, pets and the environment if not disposed of properly.

Weld County has a FREE program that is in place to help residents with the safe disposal of most all of these items. Funded by the County under the Department of Public Health and Environment, the County operates a couple of waste facilities, including one right here in the Carbon Valley area at 5500 Highway 52, on the south side, about ½ mile west of Colorado Boulevard.

Rather than putting these hazardous materials in the trash, gutter, ground or just keeping them forever, Weld County residents can bring up to 200 pounds a day per household to the facility so that they can recycle and safely dispose of the items. You just show up during their normal business hours (currently Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 9am to 4pm), with the items (in containers not larger than 5 gallons) in a box (not plastic bags) and the staff will determine that the items are acceptable. Keep items in their own containers as it can be dangerous to mix things. Then they will even unload it from your vehicle!

Many of the items that the County receives are recycled through recycling partners or through their Product Reuse Program. Some items that are brought into the facility are perfectly good, so they place these items on their shelves for other residents to take for FREE. United Way of Weld County Honors Kay and Tom Norton as Humanitarians of the Year United Way of Weld County is proud to announce Kay and Tom Norton as its 2025 Humanitarians of the Year, recognizing their decades-long commitment to leadership, service, and strengthening communities across Weld County and Colorado.

Tom Norton’s journey began in Bremerton, Washington, eventually leading him to Colorado State University, where he earned an engineering degree and moved to Greeley in the 1960s. His career spanned more than 60 years, including 30 years as an engineer and 30 years in public service. During his time in state government, Tom helped shape policies supporting early childhood development, nonprofits, and communities across Colorado.

Kay Norton’s path began in Louisiana and led her through Mississippi, Oklahoma City, and Massachusetts, where she attended Wellesley College before continuing her education at the University of Denver College of Law. She arrived in Greeley in 1976 with a passion for environmental and land-use issues. The two first met at a Weld County Commissioners hearing over a proposed feedlot expansion — a moment they now recall with humor and fondness, recognizing that their shared values and commitment to responsible community planning brought them together.

Both Tom and Kay credit their upbringing for instilling a lifelong dedication to service. Tom’s mother was deeply involved in their Wyoming community, while Kay’s parents modeled integrity and civic responsibility. Together, the Nortons embraced what they call the “three-legged stool” of a healthy community: strong public leadership, a thriving private sector, and active philanthropy working in balance.

Inspired by local philanthropic leaders and mentors, including the Monfort, Tointon, and Farr families, as well as Tom Hailey and Mike and Nomie Ketterling, the Nortons became deeply involved in strengthening Weld County. They supported major projects such as fundraising for the Union Colony Civic Center and the Greeley Chamber of Commerce’s relocation to the train station. Their passion for education led them to advocate for the University of Northern Colorado’s arts and athletics programs and to establish a scholarship fund for students committed to community service.

Their involvement with United Way of Weld County began in the 1970s and continued to grow. From 2018 to 2024, Tom served on the United Way of Weld County Board of Directors, witnessing firsthand the organization’s ability to unite partners, reduce duplication of services, and direct resources where they are most needed. Kay shares that belief, noting that United Way provides donors with trusted guidance and ensures contributions make the greatest possible impact.

Though the Nortons relocated to the Glenwood Springs area in 2025 to be closer to family, their connection to Weld County remains strong. They continue to support local programs, including the PASO Institute, and remain advocates for strategic, impactful giving.

As they reflect on their legacy, the Nortons emphasize the importance of future generations stepping into leadership and service.

“Weld County is generous,” they shared. “United Way has the potential to raise twice what it does now. But it will take new donors, young leaders, and community-minded families to step forward. Learn what your community needs. Support the organizations doing the hard work. And stand with United Way — because when we all give a little, our community gains a lot.”

The Town of Firestone Parks Division is excited to host its first-ever Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, April 18, 2026! To mark the occasion, we’re giving away 40 free trees for Firestone residents to plant on their properties.

Help us grow a greener, healthier community. Trees provide shade, improve air quality, support local wildlife, and add long-lasting beauty to our neighborhoods.

The Town of Frederick is now accepting applications for the 2025–2026 Frederick Scholarship Program, which supports graduating high school seniors in Frederick. The scholarship awards $2,000 per year, for up to four years, with funds paid directly to the student’s school.

New this year, there are two application paths. Students attending St. Vrain Valley School District (SVVSD) high schools will apply through the St. Vrain Valley Schools Foundation, while students attending other accredited Colorado high schools or homeschool programs will apply through the Town of Frederick application. Both applications are available on the Town’s Scholarship Program webpage.

Let’s Study the Bible: Emotions How do we respond to being yelled at? Do we respond in kind? What is the proper response? There is righteous and unrighteous anger & silence. How do we know what one we are dealing with in any given situation? “Those who are shamed but do not shame in return, who hear themselves abused and do not retort, who serve the Lord out of love and rejoice in afflictions.” (Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan), this man is seeking the ways of God. This is a great teaching, even Jesus was able to keep silent when wrongly accused (Acts 8:32; Matt 26:63). Jesus could have very easily and righteously reacted in anger. After all, he was being wrongly accused. The sages explain that there are 3 steps to mastering this trait: 1) not being ashamed when his friend shames him, but possibly retorting. 2) compelling himself not to retort so as not to draw down upon himself, even more shaming by his friend. 3) serving out of love and rejoicing in afflictions. That is, our not retorting stems from our loving the Lord and accepting these afflictions with joy. And when we reach the third level, we merit all this honor. For this trait comes to a man from the holiness of his soul and his pure faith in the Lord that He directs all his ways, as it is written (Job 34:21): “For His eyes are on the ways of a man” and He does all for his good. When Cain was angry God tells him: “Sin is crouching at the door, and its desire is for you, but you must master it” (Genesis 4:7). We can master this, with practice. There is a beautiful Jewish tradition called Mussar, that is for self-improvement “which focuses on living a more conscientious life and heightening awareness of the world and one’s responsibilities; it aims to help us become more holy, and more whole.” (L. Here’s what to know:  Town Hall will now handle all in-person services, including utility bill payments.  Administrative Services (311 Fifth St.) will be open by appointment only for Human Resources, Communications, and Finance.  The utility payment drop box will stay open at 311 Fifth St. These changes reflect our continued commitment to efficiency, accessibility, and excellent customer service.

Kristen’s Closet at FFFD Kristen’s Closet was inspired by fellow fire departments in Colorado that offer free medical equipment to the communities and residents they serve. The program opened in 2025 in a small shed owned by the Frederick-Firestone Fire District (FFFD), located directly between FFFD’s Administration Building and Station 2 in Frederick.

The story behind the name, Kristen’s Closet, is to honor and remember FFFD’s Community Risk Reduction (CRR) Specialist, Kristen Hayes, who passed away in February 2025 after a battle with leukemia. Kristen was an inspiration not only in the community but also within the District, due to her passion for risk reduction among the residents in the communities she served. Kristen’s passion and work will always be remembered, and Kristen’s Closet will be a small mark in doing that. Her love of CRR, her passion, and kindness represent the FFFD as we work toward providing this free service of free medical equipment to the residents within our District.

During the meeting on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, the Board of Trustees approved an Appointment & Temporary Assignment Agreement to appoint Raelynn Ferrera as Interim Town Manager. To ensure continuity of operations and leadership within the organization, the Board found it necessary to appoint an Interim Town Manager while a recruitment process is conducted to fill the position permanently.

As Interim Town Manager, Ms. Ferrera will assume and perform all duties, responsibilities, functions, and authority of the Town Manager. The Board of Trustees are discussing the recruitment process for a Town Manager.

Aims Community College hosted a signing ceremony with Frontier Airlines to formalize a new hiring pathway for graduates of the College’s Aircraft Maintenance Technician program.

Aims Community College Invites the Community to 2026 Aims Day Aims Community College will commemorate its 59th birthday with a community celebration on January 23.

The event, known as Aims Day, offers an opportunity for community members and local leaders to engage with Aims administrators, faculty, staff and students. Held at the Welcome Center, 4901 West 20th Street on the Greeley Campus, the event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The institution will highlight its impact and future initiatives. Attendees will gain insights into the college’s contributions to education and workforce development in Northern Colorado. Interactive activities will be on-site to spotlight state-of-the-art technology and programs. A sit-down lunch will be provided for attendees.

Tracy L. Toberman

Tracy L. Toberman went to be with his Lord and Savior on December 23, 2025 at the age of 63.

He is survived by his wife Rebecca, and three children, Jessica, Nicholas and Danielle.

A man of faith, Tracy deeply loved God and Jesus and carried his beliefs into how he treated others, consistently going out of his way to help those in his community. He would routinely help strangers, with a special place in his heart for stranded motorists and bikers.

Tracy was a highly skilled artisan, his talent evident in the buildings and structures he helped construct and in the many handmade items he created. He supported his family through his expertise in welding and the entrepreneurship of owning and operating his own business. Whether welding an outdoor flower stand for his wife or making an accessory for his daughter’s Halloween costume, his love was evident in every piece he crafted. Though his fondness for reusing and upcycling oftentimes had him producing solutions with character, there was no doubt in the structural soundness of his fixes around the house.

His dedication and compassion were reflected in his love of gardening. With an unmatched green thumb, he could coax life from anything—most memorably the discarded, uprooted hollyhocks he found by the roadside, which now bring vibrant beauty to our backyard.

He will be remembered for his generosity, craftsmanship, and willingness to help others. Tracy was a true fanatic and loved many sports. He loved his family, America, fishing, nature and music. He was happiest riding one of his Harleys and lived his life with the knowledge that “It is by grace that ye are saved”.

His hands were capable, his work thoughtful, and his legacy lives on in the things he built and the people he helped. He had a booming laugh that could fill a roomTracy will be missed dearly.

Laurie A. Nelson of Firestone Colorado passed away on November 2, 2025, at her home. She was born April 19, 1960, in Iowa to Robert A. Mott and Elizabeth M. Mott (Weets). Laurie had several jobs in her life, she worked at the local market (the only market at the time in Firestone Star Market), Hugh M Wood in Gunbarrel, bookkeeper, and had her own house cleaning business. Laurie enjoyed traveling with her fiancé Robin Brodie, spending time with friends, and loved dancing.

Sept. 21, 1943 – Nov. 5, 2025

Stanley Dufour, 82, of Frederick, passed away peacefully on November 5th, surrounded by his loving children and grandchildren.

Stan was the son of Armand and Esther Dufour and was born in California in 1943. The family later moved to Dacono, Colorado, where Stan enjoyed helping his father run the family store.

He attended schools in the Frederick school system and proudly graduated as a Frederick High School Warrior with the Class of 1961. During his high school years, Stan met the love of his life, Nancy Figurilli, beginning a lifelong partnership built on love, laughter, and family.

Stan and Nancy were blessed with four children — Rod, Randy, Roger, and Ranissa — whom they loved and supported deeply. Whether at a game, match, or meet, you could always find Stan and Nancy in the stands cheering on their children and, later, cheering even louder for their grandchildren.

Stan’s work ethic was one to be admired. He spent several years as a machinist at Gardner Denver before moving on to Rocky Flats, where he eventually retired.

Beyond his professional life, Stan was deeply committed to his community. He volunteered with the Frederick Fire Department and served on the Town Board of Frederick. He was also a proud and active supporter of the Frederick High School Alumni Association. When he wasn’t volunteering, you could often find Stan playing softball, bowling, playing golf, and enjoying time with his brother and sister.

Stan’s family will miss him every day but find comfort in knowing he is now reunited with Nancy, watching over everyone from above—alongside his beloved parents and the many pets he adored throughout his life.

Stan is survived by his children Rod (Jody) Dufour, Randy (Melinda) Dufour, Roger (Melissa) Dufour, and Ranissa Dufour (Robert Digesualdo); grandchildren Jason Breazier, Ashlie Dufour, RJ (Caitlin) Dufour, Alex Dufour, Dylan Dufour, Aspen Dufour, Tori Dufour, Riley Dufour, and Reno DiGesualdo, great-grandchildren Haven Dufour and Silas Breazier, brother Larry (Florence) Dufour; sister Cheri (Rocco) Villiani, and numerous nieces and nephews. Stan was predeceased by his parents Armand and Esther Dufour and infant brother Kevin Dufour.

A visitation was held at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel & Crematory, located at 326 Terry St., Longmont, CO, 80501, on November 13, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The funeral service followed at the same location from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm on the same day. and Legion Riders. She donated her time and made dinners for the Legion so she could give back to the ones that served our country (everyone loved her Chile Rellenos). She was preceded in death by parents, her husband Harvey Nelson, her fiancé David Wagy, and her son Christopher. Laurie is survived by her son Dustin Nelson, daughter Kathy Nelson, Sister LeeAnn Johnson (Mott), Two brothers Bryan Mott and Lynn Mott, grandchildren Amber Tatkenhorst, Travis Tatkenhorst, Christopher Nelson Jr., Savanna Nelson, great grandchildren Nash and Maya May. There was a celebration of life on December 7th, 2025, at the American Legion in Firestone.

Rocky G. Figurilli

March 30, 1954–Dec. 14, 2025

Rocky Gene Figurilli was born into a large Italian family March 30, 1954 in Longmont, CO to Rocco Nick & Betty Louise (Forshey) Figurilli. He attended high school in Erie, CO and graduated in 1972. After high school, he worked at Gardner Denver and then in the oil fields for a short time. Rocky met Debbi Lynn Rundquist and they were married in 1974. To this union two children were born; Jeffrey Kyle and Julie Kay. In 1982 Rocky married Gail Ann (Wulff ) Figurilli and to this union one girl was born; Margaret Louise.

Throughout the years, he was employed with Mapleton Sales hauling gas, as a long-haul truck driver with NW Transport, and hauled food for both Cub Foods and Safeway. During that time, Rocky also owned and operated the Little Touch of Italy catering business on the side, catering all different kinds of events.

After retiring from driving semi, he turned his attention to his Fig’s Catering Food Truck, serving fresh Italian sandwiches and lasagna at different breweries and businesses around the Frederick and Longmont areas. Rocky fully retired from everything in 2020.

His true passion in life was fishing, especially around the old family cabin in Gould, CO with his mom & dad, wife, brother, children, niece, nephews, and too many family friends to count. Many laughs and comedy of errors were had by all on every fishing trip... and yes, it’s true, the fish always got bigger in size the more the stories were told. Rocky also enjoyed goose hunting in his early days and pheasant hunting “with the boys” in Sharon Springs, KS. in his later days - hunting with co-workers, cousins, nephews, his youngest daughter, and close family friends. And, he really enjoyed the days he was able to play Cribbage with his hometown pals in his later years.

It’s no secret Rocky had a big heart and loved to help and provide for others; handing out King Size candy bars for all the kids at Halloween, being the first to volunteer to cook food for a large gathering, annually making homemade wine so he could take it to every family party, making prosciutto for the old family Christmases, volunteering to drive his Auntie Jane and Uncle Fervio “up the mountain” to gamble and eat the King Crab leg buffet – he was willing to go anywhere and do anything for anyone he knew so they would feel at home. He considered everyone to be family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Rocco & Betty, his sister Nancy Dufour and her husband Stanley Dufour, his brother Richard Figurilli, along with numerous aunts & uncles on both sides of the family.

He is survived by his wife Gail of Frederick, CO, son Jeffrey (Cathryn) Figurilli of Granbury, Tx, daughters Julie (Figurilli) Salazar of Seattle, WA, and Margaret Figurilli of Sharon Springs, KS; one grandson, nieces & nephews, and many cousins far and wide.

A funeral service was held at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel on December 29th, 2025 at 10:00am. A graveside service for Rocky’s Internment will be held in Weskan, KS at a later date.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity in Rocky’s name.

Do School Phone Bans Actually Work?

Phone bans in schools have helped children eliminate screen time and improve the overall learning environment, so the Wall Street Journal wonders why more schools aren’t jumping on the trend.

“For most schools in the US in states that adopted #phonefreeschools policies, it’s only been 3-4 months since these rules took effect. It’s been a transition period, and yet right away we’re seeing very encouraging results,” social psychologist and The Anxious Generation author Jonathan Haidt said on Instagram, responding to the WSJ’s query.

The WSJ reported that school districts are seeing a major change in students following phone bans.

“When you have 267 incidents of threats and physical injury in the first 10 weeks of a school year, that’s a serious problem,” April Moore, superintendent of the Sierra Sands Unified School District, said of last year’s disciplinary issues.

This year, though, everything’s different, thanks to eliminating phones.

“Incidents involving threats and physical injury in the first 10 weeks this school year declined by almost half to 142. The number of disciplinary actions for harassment dropped by nearly 83% to 19. Total suspensions were down 69% to 72,” the WSJ said.

“Early data on the effects of school phone bans confirm what teachers and administrators have long suspected — that phones in the classroom were the primary culprit behind bad behavior and low engagement,” the outlet continued.

Haidt said, “I love this feedback from a teacher: ‘I’m seeing a bit more of the innocence of childhood coming back.’”

The author hopes these results encourage other states to take up the cause. ,” his post concluded. “Just 10 “Here’s to more #phonefreeschools in 2026 more states to go, and another 20 to go from instructional-time-only to full-school-day (bell to bell) policies. With results like these, it’s just a matter of time before all of the US has this new norm in its classrooms, and kids are engaging more deeply in learning and play while at school.”

Whether or not your state has restricted phone use in classrooms, parents should take steps to ensure their children have healthy boundaries when it comes to devices.

Haidt recommends four things: “no smartphones before high school, no social media before 16, phone-free schools” (if possible) and “more independence, free play, and responsibility in the real world.”

CDOT Permanently Closes I-25 East Frontage Road Access to WCR 34 on Jan. 5 The Colorado Department of Transportation will permanently close the I-25 East Frontage Road access to Weld County Road 34, in Mead, on Monday, Jan. 5, at 5 a.m.

Closing frontage road access to WCR 34 is required for crews to extend the North Creek Box Culvert as part of the I-25 North Express Lanes Project.

This closure is part of CDOT’s continued coordination with the Town of Mead and Weld County, who are building a 2-mile portion of High Plains Boulevard between Weld County Road 32 and Weld County Road 36. Once opened, (projected summer 2026), traffic that previously used the frontage road will use High Plains Boulevard, and the frontage road use will transition to private property and utility access only.

As shown on the map, local motorists will be able to access their properties between WCR 34 and WCR 36, but thru traffic will not be allowed. Similarly, local motorists will be able to access their properties between WCR 34 and WCR 32, but no thru traffic will be allowed.

Starting late January, in preparation for accommodating the I-25 northbound lane widening and the frontage roadway transition, construction crews will begin to reduce the asphalt roadway width on isolated sections of the frontage road, from Mulligan Street (northeast quadrant of Colorado Highway 66 and I-25) to Colorado Highway 56.

During construction, the frontage road will be closed south of WCR 32 so crews can complete I-25 widening and drainage work. Viable detour routes and speed limit reductions will be posted. Please drive carefully through the work zones and reduced roadway sections.

Drive with caution.  Don’t change lanes unnecessarily.  Avoid using mobile devices such as phones while driving in work zones.  Turn on headlights so that workers and other drivers can see you.  Be especially alert at night while driving in work zones.  Expect delays, especially during peak travel times.  Allow ample space between you and the car in front of you.  Anticipate lane shifts and merge when directed to do so.  Be patient!
