But it’s not up to the mayor of any of our communities, even though we elected them, to hand-feed us information. It is our duty, as citizens and residents, to keep up on the happenings around us. I know that I should attend board meetings, at the very least, look up and read the minutes from those board meetings. I know we’ve voted in those we think will do what we want within our communities. But how can they do what “we” want if we don’t tell them? How do we tell them? Call, write letters, and go to the board meetings.

Murder Mystery Dinner

T

he Prairie Greens Resident Council held their first Murder Mystery Dinner on February 25 in the clubhouse. This event followed after the movie “Clue” in a “Who Dun it” type of murder event. The evening began with the butler seating 70 residents for dinner. Dinner was: Miss Scarlet’s killer rolls, Eliza Black’s Guilty Garden Salad, Ms. Body’s Lethal Fried Chicken, and Mrs. Peacock’s Drop Dead Cheesecake.

Twelve characters dressed as Mr. Green, Professor Plum, Miss White etc. began to

solve the murder mystery by finding clues around the clubhouse. The weapon was the candlestick, the room, the dining room and the murderer, Marla Mustard were all revealed. A Fun time was had by all.

Prairie Greens is a great community located in Frederick, where neighbors share in events like the Murder Mystery Dinner, St. Patrick’s Dinner, A Talent Show, Ice Cream social and Community Picnic.

Firestone Board Of Trustees Name Police Station Task Force

D

uring their meeting on March 15, 2017 the Firestone Town Board of Trustees appointed a Task Force to present the need for the citizens of Firestone to vote in favor of building a new Police Station Facility in the upcoming election on November 7, 2017.

The focus of the thirty-member Task Force is to present the residents with the understanding of the need, the over-all design and cost of building a new Police Station Facility. The first meeting of the Task Force was Thursday, March 23 at 6:00 p.m. at the Firestone Town Hall.

Other meetings are scheduled to be held at the Firestone Town Hall from 6:00 p.m.8:00 p.m. as follows: Thursday, April 27; Thursday, May 25; Thursday, July 27. There is no meeting scheduled for the month of June.

All meetings are open to the public.

Comments, concerns and questions need to be presented in written form to George Heath, Chairperson of the Police Station Task Force, prior to the meetings as public comments will be limited during the meetings.

In July a Campaign Committee will

be selected from the Police Station Task Force. Their goal will be to communicate detailed information concerning the Police Station Facility election scheduled for November 7, 2017.

The following citizens have graciously committed their time and energy to represent their neighborhoods on the Police Station Task Force: Sean Doughtery, Marlene Morris, Bailey Dotson, Derek Johnson, Whitey O’Malley, Chris Combs, Lee Athman, Julia Davis, Kirk Fry, Leo Martinez, Lou Mathews, Candice Bahnson, Ted Fritzch, Mike Mallorkey, Dave Fornoff, Matt Holcomb, Parker Ridgley, Ron Martin, Dave Evans, Purdy Outhouse, Ryan Bertram, Chris Martinez, Karl Kirschstein, Butch Walb, Wendy Darnell, Don Conyac and Jack Abughazaleh. In addition there will be six police officers from the Firestone Police Department who will have in-put into the need for a Police Station Facility prior to the November 7th election date.

z Happy Spring everyone; Don’t forget to change out the batteries in you smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Springtime brings out springtime cleaning so take advantage of the annual citywide clean-out day, it’s scheduled for Saturday, May 27 at Joe Baker the Front Range Landfill, 1830 Weld County Road 5, in Erie. Dacono residents, with valid ID, can obtain one voucher from Dacono City Hall for free disposal of one load of large bulk items.

Vouchers must be obtained at Dacono City Hall between Monday, April 24 and Friday, May 26. Dacono City Hall will offer extended business hours as well to enable residents to obtain a voucher. Only one voucher per household will be issued. The voucher must be presented to the gate attendant or landfill charges will apply. Vouchers will not be available at the landfill. All loads must be covered/tarped and/or secured in such a manner that no waste or debris can fly out, fall out or become airborne in any way. Uncovered/unsecured loads will be charged double, no exceptions. Residents 65 years of age or older or those with a disability, can contact Dacono City Hall by and request assistance with their bulk waste disposal. Items will be picked up the morning of either May 25 or

The steel structure will be finished by the end of March and by the end of the summer, they hope to have the buildings ‘dried in’ with exterior skin and roofing complete. At this pace, they hope to have the facility completely built and operational by Summer 2018.

We are excited about how many primary jobs Agilent Technologies is bringing to the community and are so glad they have chosen to call Frederick home. z Our Police department recently hired a fourth sergeant, promoting an officer who’s been with the Town since 2004. Sergeant Jared Bakes is a great addition to the leadership of the department with over 100 hours of supervisory classwork and certifications in firearms and driving instruction as well as a field training officer. He received a Distinguished Service Award during the 2013 floods and was named Officer of the Year in 2010. The addition of a fourth sergeant allows for more supervisory coverage

in the graveyard shift, which lends support and leadership to officers who are often dealing with the most challenging situations. z Frederick has been named a Tree City USA for the third year in a row and our annual Arbor Day celebration is a way to share that with our community’s youth. On April 28th, we’ll be going to each of the elementary schools in Frederick to talk about Arbor Day and give out seedlings to each third grader in our community. We’re excited to partner with the Frederick High School Theatre Department as the present a play about Arbor Day as part of this year’s celebration. Last month, I also had the pleasure of congratulating the 5th grade art students at Thunder Valley K8 who will be representing Frederick in the statewide Arbor Day poster contest. z Frederick’s Spring Clean Up Day is scheduled for 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday April 29th, so be sure to check our website for details about what will and won’t be accepted at this opportunity to beautify our community.

z April brings several community events that you should already be aware of and have marked on your calendar. The annual “Eggstravaganza” will take place on April 8th beginning at 10 am at Founder’s Park, this is more than a week ahead of the Easter holiday this year, so be sure to schedule it correctly. z The 9Health Fair will be held at Mead High School on April 22nd from 7:00 to 11:30 am, registration can be done either on site the day of the event or online by following the link on the town website.

Volunteers are still needed for the event and they will receive 20% off all blood draw services at the event. z Registrations for the Mead Summer Recreation Program are currently under way. The program is a state licensed child care program and the town is offering an expanded 5 days per week opportunity this year. For more information please visit the town website and/or contact the town hall as the number of openings are limited per state guidelines. z Updates to the Mead Comprehensive Plan are in process.

The Comprehensive Plan serves as a guiding tool for development and should be something that every citizen is familiar with. Having a thorough plan in place is instrumental in identifying and attracting the types of development we would like to have included in our town.

If you want to have a voice in the growth and direction of our town, this is the process to be involved with. I highly recommend contacting the town hall and letting them know that you would like to participate. z The Town Board has completed the first round of interviews for our new Town Manager and have narrowed the candidate pool down from 65 applicants to 2 outstanding candidates, in my opinion.

character of my childhood was an affable guy who tried to get through life as peacefully and cheerfully as possible.

But when provoked, Popeye was also well-known for saying, “I’ve had all I can stands; I can’t stands no more!” I guess we all have had a few Popeye moments in life, and I’m currently having one concerning the actions of elected leaders in Frederick.

There are petitions being circulated that call for the recall of the Frederick mayor and two trustees. The basis for the proposed recalls have to do with sweetheart deals with developers that violate the very zoning and land-use codes they adopted, and advancing projects that will reduce property values for some and diminish the private enjoyment of people who live nearby. Read on.

They voted in support of a 54-unit, four-story apartment project in Old-Town Frederick, when the code they adopted says three stories is the limit. What’s changed?

Why not six or eight stories? They voted for building a drive-in restaurant across the street from the high school that’s within fifty feet of a residential area when the land-use code they adopted requires a minimum distance of 250 feet. It’s no small detail that the Board of Trustees overrode their own Planning Commission who voted against constructing the drive-in restaurant, as proposed, because of proximity to homes, excessive noise, and traffic. But there’s more. According to the town Finance Director, the approved budget for this year calls for spending $5.6 million more than expected revenue. There may be good reasons for this unprecedented

spending, but our leaders have certainly not made their case to we taxpayers.

Yes, I expect there are counterarguments to these concerns, and I’d like to hear our leaders make them. Since our mayor writes in this very paper every month that he loves to meet with neighborhood groups, I sent him an email on March 10th inviting him or his representative to come to a meeting I was hosting for friends and neighbors on March 23rd to discuss the matters the recall petitions raise. I took him up on his offer, but didn’t even get the courtesy of a reply to my invitation.

I hope this recall initiative will garner the attention of current and future Frederick leaders. I simply ask that they comply with land-use codes that protect others’ property rights and truly listen to, and communicate with their constituents about matters of importance. When was the last time you saw an update in the Town’s monthly newsletter about their desire to acquire the assets of United Power that provide electrical service to most of Frederick? Do you wonder how much they’ve spent on this project so far? I sure do. Like Popeye, I have had all I can stands; I can’t stands no more!

16th Annual Firestone Clean Up Day

pril 29, 2017, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Firestone Public Works, 7500 Pine Cone Ave. (WCR 20), the Town of Firestone hosts an Annual Clean Up Day and Food Drive each spring to allow Firestone residents to bring all unwanted household debris to be disposed of through a community-wide effort. In addition to the cleanup, the Town of Firestone also welcomes residents to donate non-perishable food items as part of a food drive to benefit local food banks. Once items are disposed of, residents are welcome to join Town staff and elected officials for a free pancake breakfast and a hot dog or hamburger lunch.

Firestone Parks and Trails Committee Meeting Report Drew Peterson reported on the March 6th Parks and Trails Committee meeting.

Our Town Manager Bruce Nickerson gave updates on the trail system. In addition, our Town Engineer Dave Linsey provided details on the plans for the trail system. Mr. Nickerson addressed two major parts of our trail system. The first is the extension of Firestone Trail north of Firestone Blvd (this is just east of Oak Meadows subdivision) extending north 5 additional miles. This leads to an excellent open space with wetlands and wildlife.

The second is the connection of Firestone Trail to the west to Saint Vrain State Park.

The committee gave direction for the staff to pursue plans for enhancing our trail system. The staff pending approval from the town board will be working on developing a development plan for the trail system as well as cost estimates. This would be the first step in moving forward in completing our trail system.

The committee agreed that the initial focus should be on the connection of the trail to the west as this would connect our communities as well as provide access to a great state park. The extension of Firestone Trail to the north for the first mile or so is essentially already complete with the exception of some minor maintenance.

The additional 4 miles will require some development to be accessible by bike.

With all this said, I am happy to announce that Firestone is getting a new Bike shop in town. Rick Darenberg was in attendance at the meeting and I had the pleasure of meeting with him and his partner. They are opening “Two Brothers Bicycles” right next to the Pizza Hut Delivery in the shops in front of Home Depot. With the development of the trail west, this is a great location for a bike shop. Walter Realty is in an older home that’s been refurbished at 4967 Godding Hollow Pkwy (County Rd 18). Lori and her husband Paul are building their personal residence behind the refurbished home.

Lori, who has the real estate graduate and master’s designations of GRI and MRE, has been a real estate broker since 2002. She managed RE/Max Horizons in Firestone for five years. She founded Walter Realty in 2012 and has since brought on two associates. One is Ana Maria Botero who is a wife, mother, architect, artist and is fluent in Spanish. The other associate is Justin Noyes, who has been Salesman of the Year for Paint Pals for the past 5 years. Pam Solomon, wife, grandma and antique refurbisher serves as Lori’s personal assistant.

Rusty O’Neal Turns Hobby into Community Business and Resource

A

fter years of acquiring equipment and tools for his own Rusty’s Repair, Frederick resident Rusty O’Neal decided to make his quality tools and equipment available to others at a reasonable rental cost. In late 2016, he founded Rusty Rental LLC and started renting equipment to neighbors and friends. Many in the tritown area soon realized they could benefit from Rusty’s inventory and services.

Rusty felt a sense of accomplishment or “purpose” when he saw one of his client’s backyards transformed into an amazing oasis, using machinery from Rusty Rental.

Although Rusty Rental serves primarily the Carbon Valley Area, the company’s equipment can be used anywhere along the front range. Just a few of the items for rent are hauling trailers, bobcat with attachments, carpet cleaner, carpet fan, pressure washer, cement mixer, trencher and demolition saw and drill. Larger equipment consists of a Toro Dingo, a curb and gutter machine and a skid loader with available attachments to do most everything you’ve thought about doing and more. Most customers are small contractors and homeowners.

Rusty developed a strong work ethic at an early age, having grown up on a farm.

Rusty has been providing repair services

to the community for over twenty years.

He says, “I can just about always be found fixing, working, or tinkering on a project.”

He continues, “The community has been good to us. As Rusty Rental continues to grow, we intend to grow with it and offer a larger selection and great services. We take great pride in providing reliable, well maintained equipment to our clients.”

Rusty is managing and operating the day-to-day activities of the rentals. He is married to April, who is a teacher. They have two boys, Joseph and Matthew. The 6 and 16-year-old boys keep Rusty and April busy with everything from “Bob the Builder” to driving lessons. Rusty enjoys camping with his family and relaxing in the mountains.

W

ith the help of the Colorado Association of Realtors, the State of Colorado has set up a program to allow any Coloradan to set aside up to $50,000 toward the costs of closing on a home. The earnings on those funds (interest and capital gains) are free from Colorado state taxes.

FHSAs (First-time Homebuyer Saving Accounts) are a great way for future homeowners to start saving ahead if time for the costs of buying a home. The initial down payment and closing costs are often times the impediment that keeps people from getting their first home and this is a step to help solve that problem.

These accounts are simple and easy to set up. Not only can you open a new one, you can also designate almost any existing account as an FHSA. To create an FHSA, you simply include a form when you file your state taxes. The form will indicate that you should not be taxed on any earnings because of the account’s FHSA status.

After you use the money toward the closing costs on a first home (yours or

someone else’s, you send in a different for to the Department of Revenue showing that the funds were put toward an “eligible cost”.

The money can be used to pay for someone else’s closing costs as long as the person you’re giving the money to is a firsttime homebuyer. As with any tax related program, be sure to talk to your tax advisor to see exactly how this would work for you.

ocal Girl Scout Troop 71171 Juniors are working on their Bronze Award project. The Bronze Award is the highest award that a junior can receive from Girl Scouts and needs to be a project that gives back to the community in some way. Troop 71171 Juniors have chosen to help the Senior Citizens in our Tri-Town area.

In May, the Juniors would like to donate gift bags with items to benefit seniors.

We are asking for help from the community to help fill the gift bags.

Shred It Now Event To Support The Carbon Valley Help Center Get rid of all your sensitive paper documents and electronics at a community-wide SHRED IT NOW event coming to the Carbon Valley this month.

Support the Carbon Valley Help Center by taking advantage of RE/MAX Nexus and Apex Shredding’s co-sponsorship of SHRED IT NOW, a one-afternoon event on Saturday, April 29, from Noon to 4 p.m.

The SHRED IT NOW event will be held at the RE/MAX Nexus office Parking Lot at 11409 Business Park Circle, in Firestone.

Cost per box of paper shredding is “3 non-perishable food items.” All canned food will support the Carbon Valley Help Center. Monetary donations will also be accepted.

Veterans Stand Down Day The Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Weld County is hosting a Veterans Stand Down Day to benefit ALL Veterans on April 28th from 9am-1pm at the Colorado National Guard Armory (4050 Co Rd 22, Firestone). In addition to services such as haircuts, hot meals, bike repair, health and dental screenings, there will also be bags of personal care items such as towels, disposable razors, shaving cream, feminine hygiene products, shampoo, soap/body wash, nonperishable food, washcloths/hand towels, combs/ brushes, toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotion, deodorant, and wet wipes available to those Veterans in need. Mead Establishes its First Police Department A New Energy Focused on Success

T

he idea of forming the police department began years ago, and previous Town Boards have evaluated the possibility for a number of years. Having a local police department is incredibly helpful to a community. It allows the opportunity to develop strong relationships between the police department and the citizens they serve. The partnerships are critical to maintaining public safety, promoting a reputable quality of life and over all preserving the peace.

Prior to forming the police department, Weld County Sheriff ’s Office provided police services to the Town which included two dedicated officers. The Town is grateful to the Sheriff ’s Office for its years of service and for their support in establishing the new police department. The Town Police Department and the Sheriff ’s Office will be cooperating to provide coverage to Mead and the surrounding area.

Financially, the new police department is comparable in annual costs for what the Town was already paying to the

Weld County Sheriff ’s but results in much better coverage for the Town. The budget immediately covers a chief, two officers and a school resource officer. This change does not result in higher taxes to the community. In fact, the Town has applied for the Justice Assistance Grant to help alleviate the cost of adding an additional officer in the future.

Future plans for the department include building a new office that will be shared with the public works division, a large emphasis on community outreach and adding additional officers as the Town grows and can afford it.

Citizens of the Town of Mead are encouraged to attend and welcome Chief Mauldin & Officer Aldana, who is currently the Town’s Code Enforcement Officer at the Swearing in Ceremony on March 13th. The ceremony will begin with an open house at 5:30 pm at Town Hall. More information on the police department and the ceremony can be found on the Town of Mead’s website at www.townofmead.org.

hen I take on a new challenge, I do so with my whole heart and give it all I have-it’s who I am! I took the reins of the Executive Director position at the Mead Area Chamber of commerce (MACC) in late November 2016, and I’ve never looked back! In the short time I have been in the position, I’ve met some incredible people who are passionate and welcoming to this incredible community.

There’s a new energy and life that’s been plugged into the Mead Area Chamber, a re-branding of sorts! What does that mean for our current members and those new members coming aboard?…BETTER, BIGGER, BRIGHTER! The MACC membership is one of the best values in business because of all the inclusive benefits and discount services we offer to our members. We realize that our roots are planted in our members.

We’re small but mighty!

There are many reasons I can list for joining, but in my mind, there are three.

Three really important ones!

The first reason is PUBLICITY BOOST. This increases our member’s exposure in all formats, including on-line contacts. The MACC has a monthly Newsletter, we run newspaper articles often, tons of Sponsorship Opportunities through the Mead schools and all Chamber events, and a facebook page where we “Showcase” our members.

DIRECT MARKETING would be my second reason on becoming a Chamber member. You have access to directly market to other business owners who may require your services. I believe that chamber members prefer to purchase products or services from other Chamber members; because they understand when

local businesses are successful, we grow. At the MACC, you can utilize the member Directory to see business listings in the area, attend monthly meetings and some of our Chamber members even offer member to member bartering.

Last but certainly not least, the third reason to become a MACC member would be NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES. This puts our members in direct contact with other professionals with like-mind thinking. There are so many opportunities for networking at all of our Chamber events which include Business After Hours that are held frequently and look to add more this year! We have our bigger events coming up with the Derby Dash 5K Fun Run/Walk on May 6th , our Taste of Mead Summer Festival set for June 10th, the Annual Golf Tournament on July 28th and we take part in the Mead Community Days and Sugarbeet Festival in the fall and also the Parade of Lights and Tree Lighting in December…all of which are fantastic networking opportunities!

he Longmont Area Chamber of Commerce volunteers and staff hosted its signature event “The Unity of the Community” on February 25th at the Plaza Event Center in Longmont.

This event is the largest free networking opportunity in Northern Colorado and was open to everyone! The Unity draws over 1,000 people including elected officials, candidates, municipalities, business and non-profit leaders. As always this was a great opportunity to network and communicate with hundreds of people in one place at one time.

This year the fiddling group from Silver Creek High School directed by Paul Trapkus created a lively, upbeat atmosphere through their music. It was an evening dedicated to building relationships between everyone who lives, works, and plays in and around the Longmont area.

arbon Valley Rotary is excited to again partner with the Carbon Valley Park and Rec District for our 10th Annual Easter Egg Hunt to be held Saturday, April 15, from 1 to 2:30 pm at Hart Park in Firestone.

The event is FREE to attend, and there will be four “hunt” areas divided by age and height for the 10,000 candy stuffed eggs.

Only 10 to 12 children will be allowed in each area at a time – and the Easter Egg Hunt will last the entire 1 1/2 hour period.

the Last Supper Passover meal and the faith heritage of Jesus and his followers.

New Creation Church to Portray Final Week of Christ’s Earthly Life New Creation Church, 737 Bross St., Longmont is presenting its third annual free public event called The Passion Experience, more commonly referred to as the final week of Christ’s earthly life. The event will include a one-hour audience experience to be held on Thursday and Friday, April 13 and 14.

The experiential event begins with a market scene that includes live animals such as chickens, goats, and camels. Jesus has a triumphant entry as he rides a donkey into the market place. The remainder of his final earthly week of his last supper, betrayal, persecution and crucifixion is told in a clarifying manner through scripture and song.

Performances will be held hourly each night at 6pm, 7pm, 8pm and 9pm. Free tickets are used to help with crowd flow and to expedite the experience. New Creation can accommodate approximately 100 patrons for each performance. Although the event is free, please contact the church office for tickets. ESTINY CHURCH in Fort Lupton, that church behind the Middle School, is pleased to announce the arrival of a new Youth and Music Pastor team. Stephen and Danelle Fox and their family joined Destiny’s leadership team March of 2017. After serving as Youth Pastors and worship leaders in Clifton, CO, they came to the Front Range to make an impact on the lives of teens and church attenders through their ministry. Stephen has attended Southwestern Assemblies of God University and has also engaged in Rocky Mountain School of Ministry, and Danelle is a graduate of Fire School of Ministry in Pensacola, FL. Stephen plays drums and also has a passion for graphic media, digital video, and is creative in construction.

They both have been actively involved in drama and theater as well. Stephen has served the Rocky Mountain

Ministry Network of the Assemblies of God as a Sectional Youth Rep helping to organize statewide camps and fine arts events for teens. They have 4 kids Elijah, Elianna, Lily and Evelyn. Stephen loves coffee (which is a good thing if he is going to work well with our Lead Pastor, Rob Rocca), and Danelle seems to have a passion for Siriacha! They also both love Sushi. High Altitude Archery Celebrates Anniversary with Free Archery

n April 1, 2017 High Altitude Archery will be celebrating their anniversary by inviting the public to try archery for free. Archery ambassadors from our JOAD competition teams will be on hand to explain archery equipment, talk about the sport, training, competitions and what it’s like to be on the team.

Peak Performance Sprinklers Specializes in Sprinkler System Repair and Start-Up

raig Hall, owner of Peak Performance Sprinklers, repairs sprinkler systems and helps with the startup process in the spring and early summer. With over 20 years’ experience, he tends to find himself at one client’s home and then a neighbor’s home and then another neighbor’s and so it goes.

Craig started working on sprinkler systems when his older brother, who lived south of Denver, excelled at the trade and needed Craig’s assistance.

F

inding volunteers is not always an easy task so when 33 students from the Students Today Leaders Forever (STLF) chapter at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota offered to assist the Town as part of their 2017 Pay It Forward Tour, the Town was quick to accept their help.

The STLF Pay It Forward Tour is a community service road trip that travels from city to city doing different service projects. Students pay $450 to travel on a charter bus to visit these cities and learn about a variety of social issues, with the hopes of learning more about themselves, their community and the world. They focus on three main components including reflection, education and action.

The 33 students exchanged 4 hours of work for having a place to stay for the

night. The team set up camp at Mead Town Hall. When they awoke, they assisted with cleaning and organizing the storage unit full of records and recreation supplies, inventoried all records and maps, and inventoried and prepped the basketball equipment to go into storage.

The Town of Mead is grateful to these students and the STLF program for including the Town of Mead to their incredible journey. The Town also thanks the ever-gracious Red Rooster Restaurant for supplying a free breakfast for these students as well.

I am hoping for most of you reading this, you have already filed your tax returns by now and if you are one of the lucky ones that have and hopefully received a refund, then YAY for you! Filing your taxes quickly is the best way to avoid income tax fraud.

Believe it or not, thieves’ filing for your tax refunds before you have a chance to do so is one of the fastest growing forms of identity theft. We work all year long for this moment and if you are one of the unfortunate to have to deal with a fraud case...it could ruin the rest of this year or more!

s real estate agents, we get this question all the time. You can ask ten different agents and you’ll get the same answer every time - YES! Now, this might seem like a biased answer based solely on the fact that we will be paid a commission, but the best part about that is it’s paid by the builder! If the question is CAN you work without an agent, the answer is also yes, but it would be pretty similar to walking into a courtroom without a lawyer who is willing to volunteer their services at no cost to you. Let’s take a look at the process from start to finish.

In general, the salesperson on-site at any given community is an employee of the builder and ultimately, they’re going to operate based on the company’s best interests. That’s not a bad thing; it should be expected. Shouldn’t you have the same thing - someone looking out for your best interests as well? We will be able to help during negotiation, lot and upgrade selections, construction, the walk-through, securing financing and sit with you at the closing table, available to answer any questions and make sure you find the right home at the right price.

Experienced agents already have knowledge about the various builders in your area and they have most likely worked with many of them already. They know the product quality, the negotiation margins and which ones follow through with warranty issues after the sale has closed.

Many times, new home builders will have significant incentives if you use their preferred/in-house lender. Although we’re not mortgage brokers, we will know how competitive the loan products are and have a couple recommendations if a second opinion would be to your advantage.

Don’t like shoveling? You definitely won’t want a driveway that faces north in Colorado because it becomes an ice rink if you’re not diligent about clearing snow. You probably won’t want a corner lot either because you’ll be responsible for shoveling the sidewalks along your property line. Some of these are intuitive, others aren’t so much.

For example, we would advise against you building on the lot at the end of the street across from the stop sign, which will inevitably have a constant stream of headlights beaming through the windows as residents come home in the evenings.

T

he verses in Romans 12:14-21 are not there for God to do, but for His followers.

Grab your Bible and look at them. Equally valuable to us are things to avoid as well as those we should practice. The first one is a shocker- bless those who persecute you! What? God really expects us to pray for their well-being and ask God for their happiness? Yes, indeed He does. This is the same God who said in His first statement about love (Matthew 5:44) that we should “love our enemies”.

I guess Jesus really was a radical.

Normal for most people is to curse those who terrorize us, but God says bless them instead. That is the Christian way. It’s yet another way we can let our love be without hypocrisy (Rom. 12:9). This standard of excellence is so high there is only one way to follow it, and that is by being filled with God’s Holy Spirit. Otherwise our human ’unholy spirit’ will just want to curse them.

Relatively easier is verse 15 telling us to rejoice and weep with others. Not pretending to be with them, but sincerely united with their rejoicing or weeping.

Like brothers and sisters ought to be. And this thought gets amplified in verse 16, where we should realize we are all part of one Body (the church of Christ) and have genuine concern for one another, and

compassion. Whenever we are “wise in our own estimation” we are failing God, because He says this is a no-no. Ambition and contempt for others is not Christ-like.

No species of pride is more insidious or more injurious than the pride of intellectan imaginary superiority to those around us which leads to contempt of their opinions and reliance on our own.

Next in v 17 comes a “never”, and never is a long time. Retaliation and revenge should not appear on any Christian’s resume’. Only our flesh wants “an eye for an eye”. Jesus says no to this immature idea. We are to live in such a way that we win the trust and good opinion of men. Let this saying soak in for maximum understanding of this verse: “No revenge is so complete as forgiveness.” Verse 18 reminds us we are called to be peacemakers, not war-mongers. Retaliation for injuries real or perceived only leads to more strife and contention. It will not always be in our control to dictate the outcome, but “so far as it depends on you”, do all you can to live in peace with all men and women. And don’t be the CAUSE of conflict.

Finally in v 20 we see more of how we need to interact with evil and those who would pursue it. Does the concept of returning good for evil resonate with you? It should, because Jesus wants us to learn this fully. All acts of benevolence are fair game in overcoming evil with good.

Learning to treat the opposition with affection and kindness resembles what our Lord said as the spikes were being driven into His hands- “Father, forgive them…”

The Christian way to subdue our enemy is to overcome evil with good. Kindness is powerful and love is stronger than hate, and we should know that mercy triumphs over judgement. The days of an eye for an eye are over, and our goal as believers is to win lost ones to Jesus, not hasten their journey to hell. Let us not be provoked by evil, or overcome by it, but actually overcome

it. God’s mercy can easily triumph over the rebellion and disobedience of men. I know, because He did this for me 47 years ago. As you and I let these truths soak into our lives, we will be much better able to let our love be without hypocrisy.

Dr. Amy Johnson joined the team of providers at the UCHealth W o m e n ’ s Care practice at Longmont Clinic, 1925 W. Mountain View Ave. She has been caring for patients in Longmont since 2001. t this time of year many people tend to do “spring cleaning” in the home, so I thought it would be fun to share some information about the importance of spring cleaning to help keep our mind and body happy and healthy. According to Chinese Medicine, the Liver and Gallbladder are the internal organs associated with spring.

This article will provide background and discuss the importance of taking good care of these vital organs.

This season of renewal and rejuvenation is a great time to do simple “cleansing,” especially for the Liver and Gallbladder. Both of these organs are always working to renew the body in several ways, such as their role in digestion and ridding the body of toxins. For instance, the Liver is the largest internal organ and functions include storing and distributing nourishment throughout the body, filtering toxins from the blood, and is involved in the formation and breakdown of blood. The liver, or hepatic cells, make bile which aids in digestion and stores the bile in the gallbladder to be used in the intestines for the breakdown of fats, and for enhancing the small intestine’s ability to absorb fatty acids.

In addition to physical function, these organs have spiritual and emotional function as well. The Liver involves regulating emotions, particularly anger, resentment, forgiveness, flexibility, and planning. It is a smooth and healthy Liver that contributes to our ability to visualize and make flexible plans. If the Liver were a person she would be the one who writes the mission statement for a company.

And, if the Gallbladder were a person, he would be the one to carry out the plans, and delegate responsibility to the best and appropriate people in order to get the job

done right. They work fabulous together.

There are some very general dietary guidelines to keep in mind during early springtime which include eating less, limiting or avoiding heavy foods such as meat, dairy, poor quality fats, and intoxicants. A general list of foods that help the Liver and Gallbladder function include the onion family, vinegar, basil, lemon, mint and leafy greens, especially dandelion and mustard greens.

Carrying out a springtime cleanse can be very simple, or more involved depending upon individual need. It is a good idea to do a cleanse with the guidance of a healthcare practitioner, or along with a friend or family member so that there is someone to ask questions and talk with about the experience. In general, people notice that even though doing a cleanse may have been trying at times, they feel much more vibrant when it’s finished.

fter months of preparation, the Carbon Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Auxiliary Post #9741 was instituted March 28th at Prairie Green in Frederick.

Established in 1914, the VFW Auxiliary is one of the nation’s oldest veterans’ service organizations and our members are the relatives of those who have served in overseas combat. There are nearly 470,000 members in more than 4,000 Auxiliaries nationwide who volunteer millions of hours and fundraise millions of dollars for charitable projects that benefit veterans, military service personnel and their families. Through National Programs, the auxiliary assists the VFW pass or block legislation that impacts veterans and their families. They provide nearly a million volunteer hours in the VA medical system, conduct patriotic programs with thousands of students and offer hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships for our nation’s youth.

he FHS Booster Club invites the community to an After Prom Open House. Come see what After Prom is like.

Starting at 8:00 pm and going until 9:00 pm on Saturday April 8th, the community, parents and donors are invited to walk through the school and see what all is in store for the students when they arrive after the Prom.

Frederick High School Prom is being held in Broomfield at the Chateaux at Fox Meadows. The dance starts at 8:00pm and runs until 11:00pm. After the dance the students are invited to come to the After Prom for a night of fun and activities.

At 11:00 the school is opened up to all Juniors, Seniors and their dates. The kids typically bring a change of clothes so they can move freely in shorts and t-shirts while trying out inflatables like the Velcro Wall

and Hamster Balls. They have plenty to eat with food donated by Dominoes, TCBY, Chick Fil A, Daylight Donuts, and more. DJ Mass will be there playing music all night while the kids enjoy free photos from the photo booth, drawings done by caricature artists, carnival games and high energy activities like 9 square, bungee run and joust.

After Prom provides a safe, drug and alcohol free place for the students to hang out with their friends and have a memorable night. After Prom is FREE to all the students. The students do not need to attend Prom to come to After Prom.

Patty Torrey Relocates to Redz

P

atty Torrey, former owner of Oak St. Hair Studio, has changed locations.

She now serves clients from her home salon by the business name Redz. All the same haircare services are available in this unique family friendly salon.

Patty shares, “I have previously operated home salons in both Thornton and NM. It allowed me to help provide for our family and still have a presence at home for our children. I have been so fortunate to have a career that allowed for active parenting. I am now on the other side of it. As many of your readers have learned for themselves, just because your children have grown, certainly does not mean they don’t need you anymore!” She continues, “I also am in that stage of life caring for aging parents. I am incredibly blessed to still have them and be available to them. I can better manage my time to “hopefully” keep a balance. It’s truly unfortunate there are not more careers

that allow and encourage home-based employment.”

Patty also shared something unique she now offers. When she lived in NM, she worked part time at a local elementary school in the special needs department along with working in her salon. She received training that was valuable to both jobs. Since Patty’s home salon offers a “less stimulating” environment for clients with disabilities, it is a comfortable setting for families, especially those with the challenges such as autism.

With gratitude, Patty says, “I am grateful for the time at Oak St. Studio because it gave me the time I needed to build a clientele again and form relationships with the Frederick business community.”

an Paderewski, the great Polish concert pianist and statesman, was to give a matinee performance in a beautiful world concert hall. A mother attended the concert along with her five-year-old child who was beginning music lessons.

She hoped the performance would have a positive impact on her child and touch his heart regarding the world of music.

As the mother stood gazing at the splendor of this great hall, she suddenly noticed that her child was gone. Frantic, she began going up and down the aisles searching for him.

Suddenly the lights dimmed, the announcer came on stage and introduced Paderewski. The curtains then parted and, to her horror, there sat her child on the bench of the concert piano plinking out “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star,” his first memorized piece.

To her even greater horror, Paderewski walked across the stage toward her child.

But rather than remove him from the bench, the great musical genius took a seat beside the child, smiled, and said, “Let me help you.” With his left hand, Paderewski filled in the musical voids in the child’s composition. Before long they were playing a beautiful rendition of the “Star” song.

At the conclusion of their performance,

they both stood, took a bow to thunderous applause, and the boy was escorted off the stage with a huge smile on his face.

The audience, at the end, said it was one of the most memorable performances they had ever witnessed. Why? Because a child was involved.

ased on recommendations from the Cultural Committee, the Firestone Board of Trustees launched the Town’s First Annual Firestone Design-a-Flag Contest. The contest is open to all Firestone children aged eight to eleven years old.

Designs for the Firestone Town Flag are to be submitted either in person at Town Hall or by email to events@firestoneco.gov by May 31st. The flags will initially be reviewed by the Firestone Cultural Committee during its June 6th meeting and recommend the top 3 to be forwarded to the Board of Trustees for consideration. The Board of Trustees will then pick the winner during its June 14th meeting and formally make an announcement during the 4th at Firestone celebration.

“The program is a great opportunity for our children to show their creative talents and to show their love for our community,” said Mayor Paul Sorensen. “This annual tradition will stimulate our children’s interest in government and the community they call home.” See www.firestoneco.gov/designaflag

Rotary Donates To The I Have A Dream Foundation

arbon Valley Rotary recently presented a $1,035 check to the local chapter of the I Have a Dream Foundation for use at their discretion. The funds were raised through the club’s weekly “Happy Dollars” tradition of over a period of several months.

The club is focused on Literacy for Youth in the Carbon Valley area and the I Have A Dream Foundation is a prime example of their literacy campaign.

High Altitude Archery Offers a Unique Day Camp this Summer for Kids and Teens

H

igh Altitude Archery is offering unique summer day camps for kids and teens this year. In addition to the expected archery skills and athletic training, participants in our camp will be able to make their own functional bow and arrows to take home.

Life in the 21st century is busy for all of us. Archery is a great outlet to focus the mind and get away from the 9-hours per day teens spends in front of a screen [4] causing kids to be moody [1,2]. Archery combats these effects by being a sport that, in order to succeed, one must be focused and methodical. This helps students become more grounded in the moment, and can help them achieve higher levels of focus across the board.

This summer, High Altitude Archery is offering a series of 8-day summer camps

that will help teach participants the sport of archery. In this series of eight 3-hour classes, students will learn the basics of range safety, the 4-step shot process, and mindfulness techniques like meditation that support focus in the sport of archery.

The highlight of the class will be the creation of a longbow that the students will be able to shape and decorate themselves under the supervision of a bow builder (bowyer). As part of the price of the camp, materials for a rattan longbow and cedar arrows will be provided, and the finished product, expected to be fully functional, will be the student’s to keep as a lasting memento of their time in archery camp.

Patrick Casey

December 3, 1941 to February 25, 2017

Patrick Casey, 75, of Frederick, CO died February 25, 2017 at home surrounded by his family.

Pat was born December 3, 1941 in Sioux City, Iowa to Harold and Opal (Maurer) Casey. Pat graduated from Oakland CA High School in 1959. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served as a jet mechanic and Air Crew member on the A3D and F4 aircraft until his honorable discharge in 1962. While stationed at NAS San Diego, he met his future wife Mary Ellen Coulson.

On November 23, 1963, they were married at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Longmont. After their marriage, they moved to the bay area of California where Pat became a motorcycle officer for the

California Highway Patrol until 1973 when they moved back to Longmont. Pat then joined the Westminster Police Department where he served as a motorcycle Officer, Sergeant, and Lieutenant until his retirement in 2003. During his time at the Westminster PD, he was selected to attend the 149th session at the FBI Academy.

After retirement, he worked at the Howe Mortuary in Longmont until 2017 when his health would no longer allow him to work.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary, of Frederick, sister Joan Del Piano of California; children Brian (Sheri) of Wyoming; Tim (Susie) of Washington and Katie (Jeff ) of Frederick; grandchildren: Nichole, Alyssa, Brieanne, Shelby, Shanley and MaKenna; in addition, three great grandchildren also survive.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Frederick, CO. In honor of Pat, Harley shirts and casual attire was worn. The United States Navy provided military honors and the Westminster Police Department Honor Guard provided police honors.

Private family inurnment was held at Mountain View Cemetery in Longmont.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Pat’s memory are requested to the St. Theresa’s Building Fund.
