The family has been in industry for 20 years, opening their Mead location, in September 11, 2013, as demand for new and used restaurant equipment and equipment consignment increased.

The entire staff here worked with me, helped choose product for me, and really were instrumental in me getting going,” Brian said. “Because of all the cost over runs, I ended up having to get some used items at another dealer – and it was a real mixed experience but in the end it probably wasn’t worth it. Route 66 is the only dealer I will use from now on if at all possible.”

Building Life Long Connections Locally

High School Exchange Year, a non-profit organization, connects caring families with students to share an opportunity of a lifetime. After hosting an exchange student from Finland, Melissa Gardner, joined the EF family, connecting students with caring host families. Seven years and over 100 students later, her love for her work and her experience has only grown. Once students and host families are connected, Melissa organizes outings and activities for everyone to museums, ski trips, National Park tours, etc.

During the 2014-2015 school year, Maria, one of Melissa’s exchange students, from Italy, attended Mead High School.

Maria maintained straight “A’s” and scored a “33” on her ACT, while taking the test in a 2nd language. The average composite score for Colorado is 20.6, according to ACT.org. Mead High has placed a plaque in the lobby, to recognize Maria for achieving one of the schools highest scores to date.

Thanks to the love and support she has found with her host family, Maria has blossomed and excelled in the U.S. Melissa, is currently looking for host families, for four students, all maintaining “A” GPA’s: Luca (17), from Italy – speaks English, French, Chinese and Italian – is a martial arts black belt. Annika (17), from Norway – loves sports, especially Volleyball and children. Pauline (15), from Germany – speaks English, French and German – enjoys golf, running, dancing, and plays

piano. Numwan (female, turning 16 in fall), from Thailand – speaks 3 languages – plays piano and violin.

A LETTER FROM MAYOR GARY SHIELDS Change, Change & More Change...All Good Dear Residents, As you may have noticed, there are a lot of projects currently going on around town and there are sure to be more to follow. I know that change is sometimes a very uncomfortable thing to experience so I thought that I would communicate what some of these projects are in hopes of alleviating some of the potential discomfort. Please bear with me as this article will be longer than usual.

Probably the most inconvenient project thus far and throughout the summer months is the Welker Avenue road project. This road is being widened to three lanes allowing for a center turn lane between Main Street and 7th Street. These improvements will provide for a safer road near our schools and should help eliminate the congestion experienced both in the mornings and afternoons.

The initial work being done on Welker Avenue ahead of the road project is the upsizing of the water line by Little Thompson crews. This project is being done now to avoid tearing up the new road in the future. The larger water line will help accommodate for better water pressure in homes and will ultimately tie-in to a new water line that will be installed from the

east side of I-25 and into town. At that time, we will have a redundant feed of our water supply which will again add to the overall integrity and usefulness of the system. I am anticipating that the new line will be constructed in the next year or two.

At the intersection of Welker Avenue and 3rd Street, you may have noticed that the old gas station, the house and the outbuildings were demolished. While this was a quaint building that added a certain charm to the town, a large portion of the property was needed to continue improvements to Welker Avenue and the 3rd Street intersection. The town board worked very hard to move and preserve the gas station building but in the end it was not financially feasible and we did not have a location to move it to and put it to use. I am expecting that the intersection improvements will be budgeted in the next year or two.

The trails project along 3rd Street between Welker Avenue and Adams Avenue has been completed. There may be some repairs made to the trail prior to accepting the project and I expect that the final grade work and seeding will happen in the coming weeks. In JulyAugust, the trails project should start again with the trail extension from Adams Avenue to Highway 66. While we enjoy a substantial trail system in the north end of town, the addition

of trails to the south should provide for a nice balanced system and provide families from both areas with alternative access to the old town area.

The Downtown Revitalization Committee has completed the addition of benches, planters and trash receptacles along Main Street.

Upcoming projects will add trees and antique style street lights. In addition, the town board and staff continue to work on incentives ideas for potential development and completion of the Main Street vision.

The area of 1st and 2nd Street will see the addition of the Lighthouse Storage facility. This project has been contemplated for a while now and the town board just approved two waivers that should get it going once again. The new facility will offer a limited number of garage suites along with some RV and residential storage opportunities.

I hope that you find this information to be helpful. As I said in the beginning, change can be uncomfortable and I believe this to be particularly true when it impacts our daily routines. Please be patient in knowing that there is a plan and that the temporary inconveniences should be outweighed by the final product. I appreciate your patience.

The town of mead downtown revitalization committee has been working diligently for the past two years on beautification and development efforts in the downtown area. The vision of the committee is to create a vibrant downtown in a small community where families, locals, and tourists can gather to enjoy the town, local events, dining, and shopping.

Previously, there were no convenient locations along Main Street for people to comfortably gather to talk, watch parades, enjoy town events, or just be outdoors.

The recent installation of benches, planter pots, trash cans, bike racks, and seasonal banners has created fun gathering spots for individuals to enjoy the amazing Colorado sunshine and downtown area.

To further involve the community in development efforts, the committee has created a Legacy Program for individuals, families, and organizations to donate funds toward a specific streetscape item.

A personalized bronze plaque is then installed on the chosen streetscape item, memorializing the donor’s legacy.

The next phase of streetscape efforts will be the planting of trees along Main Street and installation of light poles. Trees will provide some much-needed shade to the recently added gathering areas and will enhance the overall aesthetics of the strip.

New light poles with additional banners will tie into the aesthetic enhancements and create a safer Main Street for individuals to enjoy at night.

The committee has several long-term goals they hope to see accomplished as well, including the installation and landscaping of Mead gateway signs, local art installations, and a downtown park/ piazza.

Along with beautification efforts throughout the downtown area, the committee is focused on creating new business and expanding exposure for local businesses. One of the major projects the committee helped start is the Downtown Mead Farmers’ Market, which will run

on Sundays from June through August.

The mission of the farmers’ market is to “provide a community gathering place where local farmers, artisans, and entrepreneurs can sell directly to consumers. Our goals are to improve opportunities for all in our community by promoting local economic development, as well as social and community building through educational and family-friendly activities.” Along with the sale of fresh local produce and products, the Town hopes to incorporate gardening classes, live music, local art, public education, and special events as the market progresses. The goal of the farmers’ market is to help improve the quality of life in Mead by providing a community activity that promotes a wholesome social gathering for all.

publish your events and accomplishments, FREE, every month. Simply email your information, photos, flyers, etc. to us around the middle of each month and we'll publish it as long as there is space available. Even during the off-school months.

Parents and grandparents love to see their kids in the paper so parents and grandparents can ALSO submit photos and information, including birthdays, births and other milestones in your lives. ALL FREE. Simply email high resolution photos and information to townofmeadnews@ gmail.com as close to the middle of the month as possible for the next month's edition. If you are late, send it anyways and if we cannot get it into that next month's issue, it'll be in the following month's.
