The Power of a Child’s Heart How One Act of Kindness Sparked a Movement

IN 1992, JEFF AND KRISTI LEELAND were facing every parent's worst nightmare. Their six-month-old son, Michael, had been diagnosed with leukemia, and his only chance at survival was a bone marrow transplant they couldn’t afford. Overwhelmed and out of options, they didn’t know where to turn.

But sometimes, hope comes from the most unexpected places.

Jeff, a middle school teacher, shared his heartbreak with his students, not expecting a miracle. One of his students, Dameon, an unassuming yet big-hearted young boy, heard his teacher’s story. Dameon wasn’t rich—he was just a regular kid. But after hearing about Michael, Dameon did something extraordinary. He went home, emptied his savings account, and handed his teacher $60—the only money he had—to help save baby Michael’s life. It wasn’t much, but to Jeff and Kristi, it was everything. That small act of kindness set off a chain reaction that would change not just their lives, but countless others as well.

Word of Dameon’s generosity spread through the school, inspiring other students, teachers, and community members to join forces. In less than four weeks, over $227,000 was raised— enough for Michael’s life-saving transplant. It was proof that when a community comes together, even the impossible can become reality.

Four years later, Dameon’s selfless act gave birth to Sparrow Clubs USA, a movement that empowers students to help children in need. Through Sparrow Clubs, students adopt a “Sparrow” child battling serious medical challenges, raising funds and

spreading awareness. But it's more than just fundraising— it’s about teaching empathy, compassion, and the power of community service.

Matt, the Executive Director of Sparrow Clubs USA since 2006, has devoted his life to nurturing this movement. With a deep passion for helping young people discover their own capacity for kindness, Matt finds joy in watching students rally around their Sparrow child. "It’s the spark of compassion that makes a difference," Matt says. "Seeing kids come alive with empathy and realizing they can change someone’s life is what makes this all worth it."

Outside of work, Matt lives life to the fullest with his adventurous wife, Kena, and their children. He finds joy in hiking, singing, and spending time with his two dogs. But it’s his work with Sparrow Clubs that gives him the greatest sense of purpose.

The spirit of Sparrow Clubs remains as strong as ever today. Schools across the country continue to partner with sponsors, igniting compassion in students while raising funds to support a child in need. The ripple effect of Dameon’s gift all those years ago still flows through every Sparrow Club project—proof that one act of kindness can change the world. So, what are you waiting for? Get your school involved and help make a difference in a Sparrow child’s life today. After all, as Dameon showed us, no gift is too small when it comes from the heart.

Autumn's Splendor

A Season of Color, Comfort, Connectionand Splendor

As summer fades and a crispness begins to creep into the air, Southern Oregon transforms into a landscape of vibrant hues, cozy comforts, and heartwarming traditions. Fall is a time when nature puts on its most spectacular show, painting the valleys, mountains, and vineyards with fiery reds, golden yellows, and deep oranges. It’s a season that invites locals and visitors alike to slow down, savor the moment, and embrace the bounty and beauty of this unique region.

The Colors of Southern Oregon

In Southern Oregon, fall’s arrival is heralded by a stunning display of autumnal colors. The region’s diverse geography—ranging from rolling vineyards to the towering pines of the Siskiyou Mountains— becomes a canvas for nature’s brushstrokes. The Rogue Valley, in particular, is home to a dazzling array of deciduous trees that shed their summer green in exchange for vibrant foliage. As you drive along Highway 62 or stroll through Jacksonville’s historic district, it’s impossible not to be captivated by the leaves transforming into shades of amber, rust, and burgundy.

Lithia Park in Ashland is a must-see during this season. As you walk along Ashland Creek,

the peaceful sound of rushing water provides a serene backdrop to the fiery autumn display. The park’s 100 acres of Japanese maples, oaks, and sycamores are bathed in golden light, making it the perfect spot for a leisurely afternoon or a scenic fall picnic.

The Harvest of Southern Oregon

Fall in Southern Oregon isn’t just about visual beauty; it’s also a time of harvest, and the region’s thriving agricultural scene comes alive in full force. From September through November, local farms, vineyards, and orchards are bustling with activity. Southern Oregon’s wine country, renowned for its award-winning Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, offers endless opportunities for visitors to sip and savor the fruits of the season.

Many wineries in the Applegate Valley and Rogue Valley offer fall harvest tours, where you can witness grape-picking, participate in wine tastings, and even stomp grapes in traditional style. Dancin Vineyards in Jacksonville is known for hosting special events during this time, pairing their wines with fall-inspired dishes and live music, all while offering sweeping views of the colorful autumn landscape.

It’s also apple season, and there’s no better way to celebrate than with a visit to one of the region’s many orchards. Phoenix’s Pheasant Fields Farm and Fort Vannoy Farms in Grants Pass are popular spots to pick apples, sip fresh cider, and explore pumpkin patches. Many farms also host annual harvest festivals, offering hayrides, corn mazes, and family-friendly activities that celebrate the joy of the season.

Cozy Comforts and Culinary Delights

As the days grow shorter and cooler, the desire for warmth and comfort takes hold. Southern Oregon’s fall cuisine reflects the shift, with local restaurants and cafés incorporating seasonal ingredients into their menus. Larks Home Kitchen Cuisine in Ashland, for example, serves up dishes featuring locally-sourced squash, root vegetables, and mushrooms, paired perfectly with wines from nearby vineyards.

Comfort foods reign supreme this time of year. Imagine sitting down to a bowl of savory butternut squash soup, topped with roasted pumpkin seeds, or enjoying a hearty venison stew with a glass of rich red wine by your side. And don’t forget dessert: nothing says fall like a warm apple pie, or for something uniquely Oregonian, try a

huckleberry cobbler, made with berries foraged from the surrounding hills.

As evening approaches and the temperatures drop, locals know there’s no better way to unwind than by warming up by the fire. Southern Oregon’s inns and bed-and-breakfasts are known for their cozy, welcoming atmospheres. Bybee’s Historic Inn in Jacksonville, with its antique-filled rooms and wood-burning fireplaces, offers the perfect retreat after a day of exploring the fall scenery.

Outdoor Adventures Under the Autumn Sky

Southern Oregon’s mild fall weather makes it an ideal time to get outdoors and experience the natural beauty of the region. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just enjoy a leisurely walk in nature, the trails of Southern Oregon are calling. Table Rocks, with their flat-top summits, offer panoramic views of the Rogue Valley and the colorful forests below. This time of year, the trails are less crowded, and the cooler temperatures make for comfortable hiking.

For a truly unforgettable fall experience, take a drive up to Crater Lake National Park. The deep blue waters of Crater Lake are contrasted by the surrounding ridges cloaked in autumn foliage. If you’re lucky, you might even catch the first dusting of snow on the rim, adding a touch of winter’s preview to the scenery. The park offers guided hikes, scenic overlooks, and photography opportunities that capture the splendor of fall in this iconic location.

For those seeking more thrills, the Rogue River is still an excellent spot for fall rafting, especially for those wanting to experience the river's beauty without the summer crowds. Outfitters in the area offer trips that range from mild floats to more adrenaline-pumping rapids, perfect for adventurers looking to see fall from the water.

Fall Traditions and Festivals

The sense of community in Southern Oregon is strong, and fall brings out some of the region’s most beloved festivals and traditions. The Ashland Halloween Parade is a lively, quirky event that draws families from all over, with children (and adults!) dressed in creative costumes parading down the town’s charming main street. The Grants Pass Growers Market continues to thrive throughout the fall, with vendors selling seasonal produce, handmade crafts, and locallymade goodies, offering a taste of autumn’s abundance.

One festival not to be missed is The Jacksonville Harvest Festival, held every October in the heart of the historic town. It’s a celebration of all things fall, with live music, artisan booths, and plenty of seasonal treats like caramel apples, spiced cider, and roasted chestnuts. The festival brings the entire town together in a celebration that feels as nostalgic as it does vibrant, a perfect reflection of the season.

A Time to Connect and Reflect

There’s something about fall in Southern Oregon that encourages connection—whether it’s gathering around a bonfire with friends, taking a family hike through the woods, or simply enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of spiced tea, watching the leaves fall. The season provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on the beauty of nature, the bounty of the harvest, and the comfort of community.

The season provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on the beauty of nature, the bounty of the harvest, and the comfort of community.

As autumn unfolds in Southern Oregon, it’s more than just a change of weather—it’s an invitation to slow down, to savor, and to immerse yourself in the season’s natural beauty. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, there’s no better time to experience everything this region has to offer. So grab your favorite sweater, take a deep breath of that crisp autumn air, and let the magic of fall in Southern Oregon sweep you away. gp

A Stellar

FOR OVER SEVEN DECADES, WILLIAM SHATNER HAS GRACED SCREENS — BIG AND SMALL

At 93 years old, William Shatner stands as a living testament to the staying power of passion, talent, and an unwavering work ethic. For over 70 years, Shatner has graced screens—big and small—bringing to life an array of unforgettable characters. Though best known for his portrayal of Captain James T. Kirk in the Star Trek franchise, Shatner's legacy reaches far beyond the helm of the USS Enterprise.

The Early Days: From Stage to Screen

Shatner’s career began in the early 1950s on the Canadian stage before he transitioned to television and film. His breakthrough role came in 1966 when he took on the iconic role of Captain Kirk in Star Trek: The Original Series. Though the show lasted only three seasons, its impact on pop culture was seismic, and Shatner quickly became a household name. But Star Trek was only the beginning. Shatner's versatility as an actor allowed him to explore a wide range of genres— from horror in The Twilight Zone to legal drama in Boston Legal, where his portrayal of Denny Crane earned him critical acclaim and multiple awards.

Reinvention and Resilience

One of the most remarkable aspects of Shatner's career is his ability to reinvent himself time and again. After Star Trek ended, he faced a period of typecasting and struggled to find work. But Shatner persevered, taking on roles that allowed him to showcase his comedic chops, as seen in his self-parodying role in T.J. Hooker and his numerous appearances in commercials and TV shows that played on his larger-than-life persona.

His resilience was rewarded, and by the time he landed the role of Denny Crane in The Practice and its spinoff Boston Legal, Shatner had solidified his place as one of television’s most beloved actors. His portrayal of the eccentric, gun-toting lawyer earned him two Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe, proving that Shatner was far more than just a space captain.

Beyond Acting: A Multifaceted Career

Shatner's contributions to entertainment extend beyond acting. He is a prolific author, having written numerous books

on Star Trek, his career, and even science fiction novels. He is also a talented musician, releasing several albums that range from spoken-word performances to country music.

In 2021, Shatner added another feather to his cap when he became the oldest person to travel to space. At 90 years old, he embarked on a suborbital flight aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket. The experience was profoundly moving for Shatner, who described it as the most profound experience of his life. It was a fitting moment for a man whose career has been so intertwined with the stars.

A Legacy of Inspiration

As Shatner continues to work in Hollywood, he remains an inspiration to generations of actors and fans alike. His ability to adapt, evolve, and remain relevant in an industry that is constantly changing is a testament to his talent and dedication. He has not only entertained millions but also inspired countless individuals to pursue their dreams, regardless of the obstacles they may face.

Shatner's legacy is one of perseverance, creativity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Whether he's commanding a starship, delivering a courtroom monologue, or singing country tunes, Shatner does it with a flair that is uniquely his own.

The Man Who Won't Quit

Even now, Shatner shows no signs of slowing down. He continues to take on new roles, engage with fans, and explore new creative avenues. His enduring presence in the entertainment industry is a testament to his passion for his craft and his desire to keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

As William Shatner enters his eighth decade in the business, his legacy is secure. He will be remembered not only as Captain Kirk but as one of the most versatile and enduring talents in Hollywood history. And as he continues to work, it's clear that, for Shatner, the final frontier is still very much ahead

Discover the Benefits of Shopping at the Saturday Farmers Market

IN

THE

HEART OF DOWNTOWN

Grants Pass, the Saturday Farmers Market offers more than just fresh produce — it provides an opportunity to embrace a healthier lifestyle, support local farmers, and cultivate a sense of community. Every weekend, the market transforms the city center into a bustling hub of vendors, families, and health-conscious shoppers. Here’s why you should make it a weekly tradition.

Fresh, Local, and Nutrient-Packed

At the farmers market, you’ll find a vibrant selection of seasonal fruits and vegetables, often picked just hours before the market opens. This means the produce is at peak ripeness, full of flavor, and brimming with nutrients. The shorter travel time from farm to table preserves freshness and minimizes nutrient loss, making the market a go-to source for wholesome ingredients.

Shopping locally also allows you to ask farmers directly about their growing methods. Many of the market’s vendors use organic or sustainable farming practices, free from synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, making it easier to avoid harmful chemicals in your diet.

Boosting Your Immune System

One of the greatest health benefits of shopping at the farmers market is the opportunity to buy seasonal foods. Eating with the seasons means you’re getting a wide variety of nutrients, which helps boost your immune system. For example, during the fall, you'll find pumpkins rich in betacarotene and apples full of antioxidants. These seasonal powerhouses can help protect your body from illness and improve overall well-being.

Supporting Local Farmers

Every dollar you spend at the market supports small, local farms and helps preserve Grants Pass’ agricultural landscape. It’s a direct way to invest in your community’s economy, and it encourages sustainable farming practices that benefit the environment.

By supporting these farmers, you're also helping to reduce your carbon footprint. Local produce doesn’t need to travel thousands of miles to reach your kitchen, which decreases the carbon emissions associated with long-distance transportation.

Fostering a Sense of Community

The farmers market is more than just a place to shop — it's a community gathering spot. You’ll see familiar faces, meet new friends, and exchange recipes and tips with fellow marketgoers. Many vendors are happy to share cooking suggestions, meal ideas, and insights about their products. The market offers a social experience that large grocery stores simply can’t provide.

Live music, local artisans, and food trucks often add to the festive atmosphere, making the Saturday market a fun, familyfriendly outing. Bringing your children along is also a great way to teach them about where food comes from and encourage healthy eating habits from a young age.

Affordable, Healthy Eating

A common misconception is that shopping at farmers markets is more expensive than conventional grocery stores. However, by shopping seasonally and locally, you can often find competitive prices. Many farmers sell produce in bulk, and because you’re buying directly from the source, the middleman costs are eliminated. Additionally, the superior quality and flavor of the produce means less food waste, as fresh items tend to last longer and taste better.

In Grants Pass, some vendors at the market also accepts EBT and offers a matching program, allowing everyone access to affordable, nutritious food.

Variety You Can’t Find Anywhere Else

From heirloom tomatoes to artisanal cheeses, the farmers market offers a variety of foods that are hard to find in standard supermarkets. You can explore exotic fruits, hand-crafted jams, pasture-raised meats, and unique herbs, all while knowing exactly where your food is coming from.

Not only does this variety make your meals more exciting, but it also helps you maintain a well-rounded, nutrient-dense diet. Trying new foods expands your palate and ensures you’re getting a diverse range of vitamins and minerals.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re a health-conscious individual, a food enthusiast, or someone looking to support local farmers, the Saturday Farmers Market in downtown Grants Pass has something to offer. It’s more than just a shopping experience; it’s an opportunity to invest in your health, your community, and the environment. Make it part of your weekend routine, and you’ll reap the benefits for years to come.

So next Saturday, grab your reusable bags, head downtown, and discover the best of what Grants Pass has to offer! gp

Once done, use a fork to scrape out the strands, creating spaghetti-like strands. Set aside. Make the Lamb Meatballs: 1 | In a large bowl, combine the ground lamb, breadcrumbs, egg, garlic, Parmesan, parsley, oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined. 2 | Form the mixture into small meatballs (about 1.5 inches in diameter). 3 | Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the meatballs and cook, turning occasionally, until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 7-8 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside. Make the Marinara Sauce: 1 | In the same skillet, add olive oil and sauté the chopped onion until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes. 2 | Add the garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant. 3 | Pour in the crushed tomatoes, basil, oregano, salt, pepper, and sugar (if using). Bring the sauce to a simmer and let cook for 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. Adjust seasoning to taste. Assemble: 1 | Serve the roasted spaghetti squash on plates, top with lamb meatballs, and spoon over the homemade marinara sauce. 2 | Garnish with fresh parsley and grated Parmesan if desired.
