a family
tradition
Fields Ace Hardware’s History in Grants Pass is more
than just Lumber
THE STORY OF FIELDS ACE HARDWARE traces back to its humble beginnings as Plywood Country in 1977 when Ron Fields, alongside his wife Sonja, embarked on a journey of entrepreneurship by initially selling plywood products. As the years progressed, their venture expanded to encompass a broader range of building materials and hardware supplies, culminating in the establishment of the locallyowned ACE hardware store known as Plywood Country in 1992. Through several evolutions, including a rebranding of Fields Home Center in 2011, the essence of family tradition persisted.
Today, this tradition thrives under the stewardship of the Fields family, embodied by their unwavering commitment to community service and customer satisfaction. With over three decades of experience in the business, Jason, and Kristine along with their sons Jacob and Brandon, continue to uphold the values instilled by their predecessors.
Grants Pass Magazine sits down with Fields Ace Hardware, and dives into all the glory of operations, its strategies for meeting the diverse needs of the Grants Pass community, and its aspirations for the future amidst the ever-evolving retail landscape.
"Everything that we do is about our customers or our community."
Can you share the story of how Fields Ace Hardware came to be in Grants Pass? What motivated you to continue the family tradition? The origin of what you know as Fields Home Center began as Plywood Country in 1977 when my dad, Ron Fields started selling plywood blows. Over the years, he and my mom, Sonja expanded, selling lumber, additional building products, and then all other elements of a hardware store. In 1992, your locally-owned ACE hardware, known as Plywood Country opened its doors. Over the years, the business has changed names a couple of times before becoming Fields Home Center in 2011. The family tradition lives today through my me and my wife, Kristine. After spending more than 30 years in the business, we purchased the business in 2019 and have never looked back. Our boys, Jacob and Brandon are team members at the store as well. We have several staff members that have been with us for 15-30 years and they feel like family.
How do you ensure that Fields Ace Hardware meets the unique needs of the local community? Are there specific products or services that have been particularly well-received by customers in Grants Pass? Fields Home Center is in a unique location, nestled between the rural Applegate Valley and Grants Pass. The rural

folks rely on us for a set of products such as feed, irrigation, supplies from our full Stihl shop, and all of their home needs. The more urban folks in Grants Pass may have less need for the items you’ll find on a field, farm, or ranch, but more items for the weekend DIY projects. The ACE way is all about service and we take great pride to provide the premium service that our customers deserve. Service aside, our customer know that they can find quality products in the store along with premium lumber and building products for their dream home or remodel.
As business owners, what values or principles guide your decision-making at Fields Ace Hardware? How do you maintain a positive and customer-focused culture within the store? Everything that we do is about our customers or our community. The ACE way across all stores nationwide is built on a foundation of service. If we’re not operating to provide our customers with the very best experience every time they walk through our doors, then we’re not meeting our core value. From our receiving operations, to ordering, to merchandising, to sales; it is all focused on our customers.
In the ever-changing retail landscape, what strategies have you implemented to stay competitive and adapt to the evolving needs of your customers?
We are so thankful for our customers and their candor. Plain and simple, we listen. We listen to our customers to ensure that we have what they need at competitive pricing. We also do our own research to find new products and services to be current in a fast-paced retail environment. As a retail business, you have to be diligent to compete with your local brick and mortars in addition to the online retailers that provide the ease of shopping anywhere.
Community involvement is crucial for local businesses. How does Fields Ace Hardware contribute to and engage with the Grants Pass community?
We believe in community. We know that if it wasn’t for our community, we wouldn’t be the business that we are today. Our customers support us every day and we want to support them. We take part in many events throughout the year including livestock auctions, Boys & Girls Club events, Boatnik, local Children’s Miracle Network events, and supporting local high schools. All-in-all, we have been ranked in the top 15 nationwide amongst all ACE stores for our community contributions.
Given the current economic climate and global challenges, how has Fields Ace Hardware adjusted its operations or offerings to better serve customers and remain resilient? It’s been a tough few years through the pandemic and the current economy. We understand that and we feel it too. We do our best to find the most affordable options for products that people need. We do our best to keep costs down for customers through our inventory management procedures. We also improved staff training to allow us to operate in a leaner, more efficient manner while still providing the best service we can to our customers.
Customer service is a cornerstone of any successful retail business. How do you and your team ensure that customers have a positive experience when shopping at Fields Ace Hardware?
It starts from the moment they walk through the door. They are greeted by a staff member and the smell of fresh, hot popcorn. We’ll direct them to the products they need and address questions to help them solve their problems. We’ll
"We wouldn’t be doing this for over 30 years if we didn’t love what we do."
meet our extra mile promise, which means that we will ensure you get everything you need for your project in one trip. We pride ourselves in a clean, organized store that is laid out in a way that helps everyone reach their needs. A customer recently described our store as special. She couldn’t quite list all the reasons why, but went out of her way to tell us how special our store was. That’s enough said for us.
In the realm of hardware and home improvement, what trends or innovations do you foresee having an impact on Fields Ace Hardware in the coming years?
Lumber and plywood prices over the last couple of years caused a stir in the building world. They seemed to have settled for now, but that always causes a strain through the whole process. Online shopping has become more and more prevalent in all retail markets. That channel for shopping will be a major priority for all building products in the very near future.
Managing a family-owned business can be both rewarding and challenging. How do you balance the professional and personal aspects of your lives while running Fields Ace Hardware?
The same level of passion and commitment to our business can be seen in our personal lives. We wouldn’t be doing this for over 30 years if we didn’t love what we do. We love where we live, but we also love seeing new places all over the world. We love our community and we love spending time with our family and friends.
Looking ahead, what are the future goals and aspirations for Fields Ace Hardware? Are there any exciting developments or projects on the horizon for the store or the business as a whole?
We’ve always had goals to grow our business. If that means opening new Fields Home Center locations, then so be it, but we always want to ensure we’re doing the very best we can at our roots in Grants Pass.

BOAT MAINTENANCE, BY NORMAN ELDERS
Annual jet boat maintenance on the Rogue River
SOUTHERN OREGON, the Rogue River offers a playground for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers alike. Among the most thrilling ways to experience the Rogue's wild beauty is aboard a jet boat, gliding through its rapids with speed and precision. However, to ensure these vessels remain in peak condition for navigating the river's twists and turns, diligent annual maintenance is paramount.
Understanding the Importance of Annual Maintenance
Jet boats are subject to constant exposure to the elements, debris, and the abrasive effects of river water, which can take a toll on their performance and longevity. Annual maintenance serves as a proactive measure to address wear and tear, prevent potential breakdowns, and prolong the lifespan of these high-performance vessels. By adhering to a comprehensive maintenance regimen, jet boat owners can ensure optimal safety, reliability, and efficiency on the Rogue River.
Key Components of Annual Maintenance
Hull Inspection: The hull is the foundation of a jet boat's structure, responsible for buoyancy and stability. During annual maintenance, a thorough inspection of the hull is essential to identify any signs of damage, cracks, or corrosion. Any issues should be promptly addressed to prevent further deterioration and maintain the boat's integrity.
Engine and Jet Drive Service: The engine and jet drive are the powerhouse of a jet boat, propelling it through the water with precision and speed. Regular servicing of these components is crucial to ensure optimal performance and efficiency. This includes checking fluid levels, inspecting belts and hoses, lubricating moving parts, and cleaning or replacing filters as needed.
Electrical System Check: The electrical system plays
a vital role in the operation of a jet boat, controlling various functions such as navigation lights, bilge pumps, and instrumentation. Annual maintenance should include a comprehensive inspection of the electrical system to identify any wiring issues, loose connections, or malfunctioning components. Ensuring the electrical system is in good working order is essential for safety and reliability on the water.
Propeller and Impeller Inspection: The propeller and impeller are critical components responsible for generating thrust and propulsion. These parts are prone to damage from debris, rocks, and other obstacles encountered in the river. During annual maintenance, the propeller and impeller should be inspected for signs of wear, damage, or misalignment. Any issues should be addressed promptly to maintain optimal performance and efficiency.
Fluid Changes and Lubrication: Regular fluid changes and lubrication are essential for the smooth operation of a jet boat's mechanical components. This includes changing engine oil, gear oil, and coolant, as well as greasing bearings, fittings, and moving parts. Fresh fluids and proper lubrication help reduce friction, prevent corrosion, and extend the lifespan of critical components.
Annual maintenance is a fundamental aspect of responsible jet boat ownership, particularly for those navigating the rapids of the Rogue River in Southern Oregon. By adhering to a comprehensive maintenance regimen, jet boat owners can ensure their vessels remain in peak condition, ready to tackle the challenges of the river with confidence and reliability. With proper care and attention, these highperformance watercraft can continue to provide countless hours of exhilarating adventure on the Rogue's wild waters for years to come. gp

Turkey Pot Pie Meatloaf wrapped in Turkey Bacon
Indulge in a guilt-free twist on a classic favorite with Lean Turkey Pot Pie Meatloaf. This innovative recipe offers all the comforting flavors of traditional pot pie without the carb overload, making it a perfect choice for health-conscious individuals. With lean ground turkey as the star ingredient, this meatloaf promises to satisfy cravings for the hearty flavors of pot pie while keeping your wellness goals in check. Whether you're seeking a wholesome weeknight meal or a satisfying dish to impress guests, Lean Turkey Pot Pie Meatloaf is sure to hit the spot without compromising on taste or nutrition.
When preparing the Turkey Pot Pie Meatloaf, it's essential to use the condensed mushroom soup sparingly to achieve the desired texture of your loaf. While the soup adds flavor and moisture to the meat mixture, adding too much can result in a loaf that's overly wet and may not hold its shape well during baking. By using just the right amount of soup, you'll strike the perfect balance, ensuring a moist and flavorful meatloaf without it becoming too soggy. Remember, the more soup you add, the moister your meatloaf will be, so use it judiciously to achieve the ideal consistency for your taste preferences.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1 | Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). 2 | Lightly grease a loaf pan with non-stick cooking spray and set it aside. 3 | In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground turkey, frozen peas and carrots (no need to thaw), shredded mozzarella cheese, condensed mushroom soup, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until all ingredients are well combined. 4 | Transfer the turkey mixture into the prepared loaf pan, pressing it down evenly to form a loaf shape. 5 | Take the slices of turkey bacon and wrap them around the turkey meatloaf, ensuring the entire loaf is covered. You can crisscross the bacon slices for added coverage. 6 | Place the loaf pan in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the internal temperature of the meatloaf reaches 165°F (74°C) and the bacon is crispy. 7 | Once cooked, remove the meatloaf from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing. 8 | Serve slices of the turkey pot pie meatloaf warm, alongside your favorite sides such as mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or a fresh green salad.
Enjoy your delicious and comforting Turkey Pot Pie Meatloaf, packed with flavor and wrapped in savory turkey bacon!
