pub LETTER
High Spirits Dear Readers, I hope this letter finds you in high spirits anticipating the winter season. As the snowflakes blanket our beautiful state, I am delighted to share an exciting and exhilarating adventure that unfolded right in our backyard – a week of snowboarding in Oregon at the renowned Mount Bachelor and the picturesque Mount Ashland. Last year specifically just for this issue our editorial team embarked on a thrilling journey to explore the snowboarding wonders that grace the landscapes of Mount Bachelor and Mount Ashland. Nestled within Oregon's breathtaking scenery, these two destinations offered not only pristine powder but also a unique and unforgettable snowboarding experience. Our week began at Mount Bachelor, a true alpine paradise that never fails to captivate with its vast terrain and consistent snowfall. The diverse range of trails catered to riders of all skill levels, from beginners seeking gentle slopes to advanced riders craving challenging descents. The panoramic views of the Cascade Range served as a stunning backdrop, enhancing the overall snowboarding experience. We had the pleasure of witnessing the vibrant snowboarding community at Mount Bachelor, where enthusiasts from all walks of life gathered to share their passion for the sport. The après-ski scene was equally impressive, with cozy lodges providing the perfect setting to recount the day's adventures while sipping on warm beverages. Transitioning to our local hidden gem, Mount Ashland, only an hour away was a delightful shift from alpine grandeur to the intimate charm of a hidden gem. This family-friendly mountain offered a welcoming atmosphere and a sense of community that truly set it apart. The slopes, adorned with fresh powder, beckoned riders to carve their own trails through the serene surroundings. Mount Ashland's laid-back vibe and approachable terrain made it an ideal destination for riders seeking a more relaxed and intimate snowboarding experience. The breathtaking views of the Siskiyou Mountains added a touch of magic to each descent, creating memories that will linger in our minds long after the snow has melted. The week-long escapade has not only reaffirmed the allure of snowboarding in Oregon but also underscored the unique character each mountain brings to the snowboarding community. From the alpine grandeur of Mount Bachelor to the intimate charm of Mount Ashland, Oregon's diverse snowboarding culture shines through. In this issue, we will delve deeper into the details of our snowboarding adventure, providing insights, tips, and firsthand accounts from riders who call these slopes home. We invite you to join us on this thrilling journey as we celebrate the beauty and excitement of snowboarding in our beloved state. Thank you for being a part of our community, and here's to a season filled with powdery days, unforgettable descents, and the camaraderie that makes snowboarding in Oregon truly special. Warmest regards,

Who is Leaf Barret? IN THE REALM OF JOURNALISM and literary prowess, few names emerge that captivate readers with an enigmatic allure quite like Leaf Barret. With a writing style often compared to the legendary Hunter S. Thompson, Barret has carved a niche for himself as an elusive and no-nonsense journalist who prefers to navigate life off the grid. Despite his acclaimed work, Barret remains an enigma, and the question lingers, "Do you know Leaf?" Many have asked, who is this Leaf? Leaf Barret is a recluse in the truest sense, a phantom writer who has never been seen in public. His absence from the public eye adds an air of mystery to his persona, inviting readers to delve into the depths of his written words rather than his physical presence. Barret's anonymity raises questions about the nature of fame and the role of the writer in the digital age. Leaf Barret's writing style has earned him comparisons to the iconic Hunter S. Thompson, a founding father of Gonzo journalism. Like Thompson, Barret employs a visceral and immersive narrative style that blurs the lines between fiction and reality. His prose is laced with a raw and unapologetic tone that grabs readers by the collar and pulls them into his unique perspective. Barret's no-nonsense approach to storytelling mirrors Thompson's fearless exploration of the darker corners of society. Both writers share a commitment to truth-telling, even if it means traversing unconventional paths to get there. Barret's work, like Thompson's, challenges readers to question the status quo and confront uncomfortable truths.
The Power of "Do You Know Leaf?" In the world of Leaf Barret, the tagline "Do you know Leaf?" acts as a gateway to a literary journey. It serves as a challenge, urging readers to not just read his words but to understand the mind behind them. This tagline encapsulates Barret's ethos — a direct and assertive invitation to explore the depths of his thoughts, ideologies, and the world as he sees it. Leaf Barret's decision to remain off the grid reflects a deliberate choice to let his words speak louder than his physical presence. In an age dominated by social media and self-promotion, Barret's commitment to anonymity is a radical departure from the norm. It forces readers to confront the essence of his work without the distraction of a public persona. Leaf Barret stands as a literary maverick; his preference for life off the grid only adds to the mystique surrounding his work, inviting readers to immerse themselves in the pages of his writing and ponder the question, "Do you know Leaf?" gp

MOUNTAIN IT F O R P N O N NCEMENT A H N E S E C ANNOUN UDING PLANS INCL LIFT NEW CHAIR
18 | gp MAGAZINE | V2N4
COMMENCING ITS 60TH ANNIVERSARY celebration, the Mt. Ashland Ski Area is unveiling a fresh logo and theme for the upcoming season, accompanied by ambitious plans. The chosen theme, "Elevate Mt. Ashland," underscores the ski area's dedication to improving the visitor experience, particularly for those new to mountain sports. Since its initial opening in 1964, Mt. Ashland has retained a significant portion of its original infrastructure and is now poised to breathe new life into the facility as visitor numbers continue to climb. The focus is on revitalizing the facility to meet the growing demands of increased visitation. “We just came off our biggest winter ever, and opening in summer for the first time,” said Andrew Gast, Mt. Ashland’s General Manager. “Our 60th anniversary is a time for us to celebrate the rich history of our mountain, and to look forward to ensure that the next generation of mountain enthusiasts can have the same experiences as those who have been visiting Mt. Ashland for many, many years.” Mt. Ashland is set to embark on a significant project involving the installation of a new chairlift, serving as a replacement for the former Poma surface lift. The upcoming Lithia Chair, funded by the largest donation in the history of Mt. Ashland, a generous $2 million contribution from the Sid and Karen Deboer Foundation, and an additional $500,000 from Sid and Karen Deboer, is anticipated to reintroduce access to beginner and intermediate terrain that has remained inaccessible since the removal of the original lift in the 1980s. Construction of the Lithia Chair is set to commence in the upcoming summer, marking a pivotal step towards enhancing the skiing experience at Mt. Ashland. As part of the comprehensive revitalization efforts for
the 60th anniversary, ski area management has unveiled a series of projects, with an initial investment of $1 million in ongoing upgrades. A notable initiative involves the acquisition of two demo-used snowcats by Mt. Ashland, aimed at enhancing slope grooming operations while prioritizing fuel efficiency and minimizing the carbon footprint. The broader "Elevate Mt. Ashland" initiative encompasses planned improvements addressing various facets, including night skiing experiences, enhancements to lodge and arrival services, and upgrades to the aging infrastructure surrounding the ski area. These strategic enhancements aim to elevate the overall visitor experience at Mt. Ashland “This is a historic time for us, as we truly look to ‘Elevate Mt. Ashland’ in everything we do,” said Gast. “We will continue to make it easier and more accessible for everyone to learn mountain sports, while also making some improvements for our experienced visitors who come up to play year-round.” For the 60th anniversary season, Mt. Ashland is expanding its schedule to include Saturday night skiing. Traditionally, twilight skiing has been available until 9 pm on Thursdays and Fridays from New Year until early March. This year, the mountain introduces Saturday nights in January and February, offering an extended and diverse skiing experience. The celebration continues with a vibrant event schedule, featuring the 60th Anniversary Party, Slopestyle and Rail Jam series, the culminating Big Mountain Bash at the end of the season, and more. Weather permitting, Mt. Ashland is scheduled to open for the winter season in mid-December and will remain open every day during the December holidays. gp

FROM the radish
So, you’re an Influencer? IF YOU MEET SOMEONE in today’s world and they tell you that their job is an ‘influencer’ … is that really code for un-employed? In this era of likes, filters, and virtual validation, a new deity has emerged from the depths of social media to claim its throne: the influencer. With a legion of followers hanging on their every filtered photo and sponsored post, these modern-day digital prophets are hailed as trendsetters, lifestyle gurus, and dare we say, the guiding lights of our time. But what exactly is an influencer, and how did they ascend to such influential heights? Brace yourselves, dear readers, for an enlightening exploration of this phenomenon. First and foremost, an influencer is an individual who possesses little to no formal education with the sacred ability to influence others through their social media presence. Usually those that are willing to show themselves in little to no clothing to attract the perverted armed with an arsenal of pouty selfies, artsy brunch shots, and meticulously curated #OOTD (outfit of the day) posts, they inspire sheeple followers to aspire to a life filled with avocado toasts, designer handbags, and an endless parade of aesthetically pleasing experiences. They weave an enchanting web of sponsored content, transforming even the most mundane products into musthaves, making us question our very existence without the latest detox tea or non-psychedelic mushrooms that have somehow found their way to become the next gimmick!
These self-proclaimed Tok Tickers, with their flawless selfies and meticulously crafted captions, have become the modern-day equivalent of ancient Greek philosophers. Why ponder the mysteries of life, the universe, and everything when you can learn the secrets to the perfect contour or how to achieve that coveted beach body in just seven days? Move over, Socrates, we have a new sage in town, and they're armed with a smartphone and a perfectly angled selfie stick to sell you crap that you don’t need. But let's not forget the true essence of being an influencer — the absolute necessity of obtaining an absurd number of followers. It's a numbers game, dear reader, and only the elite influencers with six-figure followership’s shall be crowned as the golden kings and queens of the digital realm. Influencers, in their infinite wisdom, have also discovered the secret formula for converting followers into devoted acolytes. Step one: Generate envy-inducing content. From luxurious vacations to carefully staged moments of indulgence, they tantalize their followers with a carefully curated glimpse into their seemingly perfect lives. Step two: Promote "authenticity" by sharing carefully selected moments of vulnerability or #woke captions that make us believe they are so much more than just glorified product placements. And finally, step three: LIE, and establish an online cult of personality where followers hang onto their every word, praising their existence like mere mortals worshiping their godlike presence. So, the next time you find yourself falling under the spell of an influencer's perfectly curated feed, take a moment to reflect: Are they truly influencing you, or are they just selling you another gimmick by flashing their big eyes at you … gp

3 ripe bananas, mashed 1 cup granulated sugar ½ cup unsalted butter, melted 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans) 1 cup Skittles Candy
INSTRUCTIONS:
1 | Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9x5-inch loaf pan. 2 | Mash the Bananas: In a large mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas with a fork or potato masher until smooth. 3 | Mix Wet Ingredients: Add the melted butter to the mashed bananas and stir until well combined. Add the granulated sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix thoroughly. 4 | Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and ground cinnamon. 5 | Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. 6 | Fold in Nuts and Skittles: Gently fold in the chopped nuts and half of the Skittles candy into the batter. Reserve the other half of the Skittles for later. 7 | Pour into Pan: Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan, spreading it evenly. 8 | Add Skittles on Top: Sprinkle the remaining Skittles over the top of the batter, pressing them in slightly. 9 | Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 60-70 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The baking time may vary, so start checking around 50 minutes. 10 | Cool: Allow the banana nut bread to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely. 11 | Slice and Enjoy: Once cooled, slice the Holiday Banana Nut Bread with Skittles Candy into thick, delicious slices. Serve and enjoy the festive burst of color and flavor!
