NYPD’s Jamaican American Law Enforcement Organization (JAMLEO) Embarks on Humanitarian Mission to Jamaica
In an inspiring display of international solidarity and community support, the Jamaican American Law Enforcement Organization (JAMLEO), a fraternal group within the New York Police Department comprising members of Jamaican descent, recently embarked on a significant humanitarian trip to Jamaica. This delegation, led by JAMLEO President Danae McFarlane, sought to strengthen ties and provide much-needed resources to various communities and institutions across the island.
One of the highlights of the trip was a courtesy call with Dr. Kevin Blake, Commissioner of Police of Jamaica, on May 1st. Dr. Blake, along with other high-ranking officials, welcomed the NYPD delegation in a formal meeting that underscored the importance of international law enforcement cooperation. This meeting highlighted shared goals such as enhancing community policing and boosting public safety, paving the way for future collaborations.
As part of their “Share the Wealth” Initiative, the JAMLEO team visited two prominent educational institutions: Cornwall College and Mount Alvernia High School. In a gesture that reflects their commitment to education and youth development, JAMLEO issued six grants to deserving students from these schools. These grants are intended to support the academic and professional aspirations of the young recipients, empowering them to contribute positively to their communities.
Recognizing the critical role of technology and literacy in education, JAMLEO has partnered with various stakeholders to facilitate the shipping of computers to 26 schools across Jamaica. This initiative is set to significantly enhance the digital infrastructure of these schools, thereby improving educational outcomes for thousands of students. Additionally, the organization has donated books to multiple libraries, enriching the resources available to students and the wider community.
The humanitarian trip by JAMLEO not only highlights the organization’s dedication to giving back but also reinforces the strong cultural and professional ties between Jamaica and members of the Jamaican diaspora in law enforcement abroad. The initiatives undertaken during this trip are expected to have long-lasting impacts, particularly in enhancing educational opportunities and technological access for Jamaican youth.
President Danae McFarlane expressed optimism about the ongoing impact of these initiatives, stating, “Our efforts to support education and provide resources are central to our mission of fostering a positive image and substantive connection between Jamaican law enforcement professionals in the United States and our homeland.”
As JAMLEO continues to build on this successful mission, their actions are a testament to the power of community, heritage, and professional dedication in making a tangible difference in the lives of many.
