UNESCO Empowers Future Engineers at Robotics, Programming, and AI Training Boot Camp

nesco in collaboration with the Engineering Council of South

Africa (ECSA) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, concluded a four-day Robotics, Programming, 3D Printing, and Artificial Intelligence Training Boot Camp as part of the 9th UNESCO Africa Engineering Week and 7th Africa Engineering Conference.

The event, held recently, at the Innovation Hub in Pretoria, South Africa, saw enthusiastic participation from students of J Kekana High School, in Pretoria.

Rovani Sigamoney, UNESCO Education Programme Specialist and a chemical engineer, highlighted the imperative behind this initiative: “We started the robotic STEM boot camp because we realised that we don’t have enough young people coming into the pipeline and we need to excite learners about subjects like maths, physics, and chemistry from a young age.

It’s not just a challenge in Africa or South Africa. It’s a global problem. We are working towards stimulating and empowering youth, particularly young girls, in STEM worldwide.” According to the Global Gender Gap Report 2021, there are only 13% of women in STEM related professions in South Africa and only 7% accounted for in the engineering industry.

Through engaging sessions in 3D printing, robotics, coding, and AI, the learners gained hands-on experience and learned about the potential careers in these cuttingedge fields. The boot camp, which forms part of UNESCO’s broader effort in ‘Reimagining STEM education for the Fourth Industrial Revolution’, equipped STEM instructors and students with innovative instructional strategies, emphasizing hands-on experiences, creative problemsolving and business skills.

“The students were required to form four groups and tasked with devising company names while leveraging their entrepreneurial skills to develop robust business strategies for their respective companies as well,” Sigamoney explained.

Throughout the four days, from 25-28 September, the programme featured a line-up of STEM role models and successful women engineers, including the ECSA’s Dr. Bridget Ssamula, who shared their journeys and motivated the students to pursue careers in these fields.

“This personal interaction left a profound impact, evident in the enthusiastic response from the students who expressed a newfound interest in science and engineering,” Sigamoney explained.

The event also included the distribution of UNESCO microscience kits, designed to make science education more accessible and engaging for students. These kits provide practical experiences in robotics and 3D printing, empowering young learners to explore these technologies first hand.

Speaking prior to the Deputy President, Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, the Honourable Sihle Zikalala, stated, “We call on everyone including the private sector to join government in investing in the development of engineering professionals for the built environment sector to function effectively by enhancing collaboration between academia, industry, the private sector and government.” He emphasized that engineers must not consider themselves as pure technicians with no role in policymaking, “We must collaborate and your practical knowledge must inform the policy direction for our country to succeed.”

Refilwe Buthelezi, the President of the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) in her welcome conference opening address stated that the 9th UNESCO Africa Engineering Week and 7th Africa Engineering Conference is a convergence of like-minded individuals from different spheres coming together to transform the sector through an orchestrated researched effort, that prioritizes infrastructure development.

She added: “The African continent is undergoing a transition period, a period where we need to focus on rapid transformation and economic growth. This event aims to increase visibility of engineering in South Africa, but also within the continent and the role that we play in creating a sustainable future. We are calling for more collaboration in growing the engineering pipeline. And this we believe, can be done by focusing more on basic education.

STEM education is essential for Africa’s future development as it produces students with the skills and knowledge, they need to solve some of the complex problems that we are facing on a day-to-day basis.” She concluded by stating that we need to find ways to build the Africa that we want.

In his address, Martiale Zebaze Kana, UNESCO Regional Director, said: “Since inception, nine years ago,

Africa engineering week has grown, evolved and taking on a new board, bringing engineers and stakeholders from Africa and beyond to engage in discourse, collaborate and work together on solving the challenges of our continent. No one institution or individual country can achieve sustainable development on its own - collaboration and partnerships and access to reliable data are key.”

Mustafa Shehu, PresidentElect of the World Federation of Engineering (WFEO), stated: “As we celebrate engineering excellence in Africa, we must also acknowledge the need for diversity and inclusivity within our profession as we celebrate the remarkable achievements of African engineers, whose contributions have played a crucial role in transforming their communities and societies and other themes celebrating and growing and growing in generic excellence in the African region.”

uman Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi has called on public servants, and representatives together with relevant institutions, to work around the clock to fast-track the processing and issuing of title deeds to the rightful beneficiaries, emphasizing that no title deeds should be kept in government offices.

This is also a testament that when the government partners with community members, nothing is impossible to achieve”, added Minister Kubayi.

The MAWIGA Ministerial Project was declared in 2022, with a committee established and tasked with the responsibility of facilitating the transfer of uncontested properties to the rightful owners. The handover of the first batch of title deeds took place as part of the launch of the Title Deeds

Friday Campaign. The Title Deeds Campaign is aimed at mobilizing beneficiaries of governmentsubsidized homes or Breaking New Grounds (BNGs) to collect their title deeds at municipality offices.

The Minister, echoed Deputy Minister Pamela Tshwete’s sentiments in commending the commitment demonstrated by the Petitions Group, which stayed on course over the years relentlessly representing affected community members, citing that “we are using MAWIGA to showcase the importance of working together with the community

to resolve our challenges”.

Speaking on behalf of the community, Mr. Moota Mfulwane, said they are happy that finally, working together with the government, they made some breakthroughs.

“Although some of those who were also waiting for this day have since unfortunately passed on, we are hoping as a community that the targeted handover of 14,000 title deeds will be realized,” said Mfulwane.

Meanwhile, the Ministry has undertaken to convene an urgent meeting with the municipalities to unlock existing bottlenecks. Interventions required, working with all three spheres, include the urgent establishment of townships to pave the way for the registration of title deeds. She made a clarion call to all councilors to champion the Title Deeds Friday Campaign by working with municipal officials to issue all title deeds on hand.

- Property Developement Balwin Properties, SA’s specialist residential property developer, is investing R415m in bulk infrastructure projects in the City of Tshwane.

These include a water reservoir at La Montagne, as well as bulk water and sewer upgrades. It is also doing road and electrical upgrades in the Mooikloof Mega City area.

The investment is part of the developer’s ongoing commitment in terms of the government’s Special Infrastructure Project (SIP) works.

Last week, Balwin unveiled a new R94m road — Hazeldean Boulevard — which forms part of the R415m being spent. Hazeldean Boulevard, which links Mamelodi and Silver Lakes east of Pretoria, will alleviate traffic congestion in the area.

Balwin said the construction of the road created about 658 direct and indirect jobs — with total employment of about 2,000 direct and indirect jobs expected from these projects.

“Infrastructure development is the life blood of Africa — it brings about growth and jobs — and we believe we are doing our part for the economy,” Balwin CEO Steve Brookes told Business Day.

Consulting engineers have a valuable role to play in facilitating the implementation of new methodologies

Navigating water as the new frontier in industry A s South Africa grapples with the escalating concern of water scarcity, water engineering is undergoing significant

transformations with new methodologies and standards, alongside innovative technologies, are shaping the landscape of water management, says SRK Consulting.

While the country boasts robust waterrelated regulations and industries are keenly aware of the mounting threats to water security in this parched region, factors such as population growth and climate change pose imminent challenges.

“The mining sector serves as a pertinent example of the pivotal role water availability plays in initial project planning. During pre-feasibility studies, if an overwhelming water challenge is identified, the likelihood of the mining venture progressing to implementation 26

diminishes significantly. Consequently, the resilience of water infrastructure has become a paramount consideration in the strategic planning of mining projects and, indeed, for businesses and municipalities alike.

In this context, a comprehensive analysis of vulnerable areas, susceptible to either water scarcity or excess, is imperative.

Implementing effective mitigation measures has become essential, ensuring the sustainability and success of ventures amidst South Africa’s evolving water crisis.

Legacy issues

There has certainly been a ready embrace of treatment technologies to address mining’s legacy in some areas. Mining companies in the Middelburg area of Mpumalanga took the proactive step of establishing a large treatment plant that could produce water of potable standard for surrounding municipalities. This was

an ambitious task of treating water in a coal mining area, where contaminated water was typically very high in sulphides and total dissolved solids.

There is growing recognition that mineimpacted water is a considerable threat to the country’s net availability of fresh water – highlighting the need to treat excess contaminated water volumes to potable quality for distribution and reuse by other stakeholders as opposed to discharging to the environment.

Mines have engaged the issue in other ways too, including helping to make the most of urban wastewater effluent.

In Limpopo province, at least one mine has been taking treated wastewater from nearby towns and using it in mineral processing applications – reducing the amount it needed to draw from surface or groundwater.

New approaches

While technology is an important enabler of these positive initiatives, the field of water engineering in industries like mining is driven significantly by rising standards and evolving approaches to meet these standards. The focus on mine closure, for instance, has thrown a spotlight on water impacts that outlive the life of a mine. Sustainable water management, therefore, has to feature upfront in the early stage studies, along with all the traditional technical and financial considerations.

Going back in history, the lack of such a focus – and its enforcing regulations – now haunts South Africa’s coal producing regions. The voids created by mining over the decades have been filled with water, creating acid mine drainage and decanting into the environment. Today, mine closure plans are expected to deal with this eventuality before it occurs, and ensure that long term solutions – and financial provisioning – are in place before mines reach end-of-life.

Among the most recent reinforcements of this approach is the Global Industry Standard for Tailings Management, which demands that closure is part of the initial design – even before the mine physically begins operations. Closure is no longer an afterthought that arises in the final years of a mine’s life.

A range of sustainability tools have been developed to guide practitioners who are implementing this responsible approach.

One of the most useful and practical methods is the water demand and conservation management assessment for mines’ water strategies. By applying tools like this, mines can potentially re-use most of their water, minimise the volumes that require treatment and reduce the water volumes being imported, while also cutting down on the dirty water produced.

Mines can make use of a step-by-step algorithm, with formulae to classify the sustainability levels achieved by the various interventions, based on information such as the ratio between water re-use and clean water imports.

There is still plenty of scope for the sector to take up tools like these, which has been designed for use in South African conditions.

Raising the bar

Consulting engineers have a valuable role to play in facilitating the implementation of these approaches and methodologies.

In our work with mining clients, for instance, it has been invaluable to workshop the opportunities for water sustainability with plant management, process engineers and operators. By exploring the specific needs of the various mine processes, we can define the different water streams and their required quality levels – taking into account water volumes and demand in each stream.

In this manner, water re-use can be optimised, as well as the scope for retreatment to qualities appropriate for either of the process streams.

Where water needs to be disposed of, the necessary qualities for discharge as stipulated in national legislation need to be planned. Minimising the requirement for clean, potable water is also considered. In one case, a mine was able to formulate a plan to optimise its process to the extent that it would no longer have to buy in water supply from the local municipality. Separating the dirty water streams – which had previously been combined – was a central factor in achieving this result.

Stewardship

This kind of innovative water engineering is increasingly engaging with issues beyond the borders of the mining licence – and considering other stakeholders within the catchment of the mine. In line with the water stewardship approach, SRK advocates that clients take a broader view of their water management. This aims to build collaboration with other users in the catchment area – from communities, municipalities, businesses and other mines. This approach is becoming increasingly relevant as competition for water resources grows; without a fuller picture of usage patterns and resource volumes, all users could be equally at risk of unexpected water shortages.

Water engineering today can take advantage of fresh approaches and constantly evolving standards to raise the bar in terms of applying sustainable and responsible water management.
