Libya

Libya Lays Foundation Stone for 650 MW PV Power Plant

Libya’s ministry of electricity is constructing a solar photovoltaic plant in southern Libya to generate power using the sun’s rays. Under-secretary for the ministry, Dr Mohamed Al, said it would be an excellent opportunity to experiment with new technology and to create jobs for young people in the region. He explained that the new power station will have a capacity of 650 MW. It will supply a large proportion of the country’s southern region with its power needs and enhance its entire network capabilities.

He added that this station is considered a major achievement in the electricity sector and within the ministry’s plan to develop energy sources in the southern region of Libya. All of Libya’s electricity has until now been supplied by fossil fuels. Most of its power stations were originally oil fired with some having been converted to natural gas.

In December 2012, the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), the state-owned company responsible for the production and distribution of electrical power, signed a contract with Siemens to supply and install spare parts at the Ruwais power station. GECOL said that the deal, which involves four gas-powered units, was worth US$75 million.

This plant is considered a major achievement in the electricity sector and within the ministry’s plan to develop energy sources in the southern region of Libya.

Ethiopia

US$120M Waste to energy plant for Addis Ababa A 50 MW waste to energy plant is to be constructed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, following the signing of a contract by the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) and waste to energy developer, Cambridge Industries.

The plant will cost an estimated US$120 million and Cambridge Industries says it is conducting detailed feasibility studies throughout Ethiopia to recommend future projects in various cities including Dire Dawa, Adama, Mekelle, Gonder, Behar Dar, Hawasa, and Jimma.

The company says that both effective power generation and waste management are among the principal challenges faced throughout Africa, particularly in its rapidly urbanising cities. The 50 MW waste to energy plant will be located in Repe (Koshe) and will provide some 100 skilled jobs in the area. The Repi waste disposal site, which started five decades ago, is described as a safe, distant and secure site, having been filled with massive amounts of waste.

South Sudan

South Sudan Pipeline Construction to Begin in October

Construction of a pipeline to carry South Sudan's crude oil from oil fields in the landlocked country to an export terminal will begin later this year according to the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining. This was announced during a briefing by the Petroleum and Mining Minister, Stephen Dhieu Dau, and senior executives from his ministry held for top officials of the ruling SPLM General Secretariat to enlighten them about the status of the country's oil industry.

In September 2012, South Sudan signed an Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) with Ethiopia and Djibouti to create a mechanism for the construction of a pipeline through their countries. South Sudan also expects to sign a similar IGA with Kenya, which would allow the construction of a pipeline to the Kenyan port of Lamu.

Ministry officials explained that a Japanese firm has completed feasibility studies on the Lamu route.

Chinese Firm to Build Sheraton Kigali Hotel

Rwanda

Century Park Hotels and Residences Ltd, a Chinese construction firm, has acquired 7.6 hectares of land near the Tennis Club in Remera sector for development. Solomoni Adede, the company chief operating officer, said the land will see the construction of Sheraton Kigali, a club house and villas. The company has already started developing in the area, located in Kibiraro Zone 11, Nyarutarama cell, where a manmade Lake Nyagahene sits.

According to Lillian Mupende, the director of urban planning in Kigali City, the area totaling about 75 hectares, was planned to host a manmade lake, club house, hotels, among others, but has been unproductive for more than 10 years. The land was owned by Bank Rwandaise de Development. Reports indicate that, Eugene Nyagahene, an investor, wanted to develop it but failed to meet environmental standards.

The company has bought 7.6 hectares for the first phase, but it plans to buy the entire land after Environmental Impact Assessment is done. Construction Companies Bid for Kano Roads

Thirteen construction companies have submitted proposals to the Kano State government for the construction of about 220 kilometers road medians on all the dual carriage ways in the 44 local government councils of the state. Work has officially started on the 138 MW Jeffreys Bay wind farm, in the Eastern Cape, which is the second-largest wind project to have advanced through the first bidding round under South Africa’s competitive Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP). This is the first wind farm to be constructed in Kouga, with several others in the pipeline.

The Jeffreys Bay project, which spans 3 700 ha and eight farms between the towns of Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp, in the Kouga local municipality district, will involve the deployment of 60 Siemens SWT 2.3 MW wind turbines, which each have a rotor diameter of 101 m. The wind farm is also within close proximity to a 132 kV Eskom transmission line and is, therefore, expected to begin supplying energy to the national grid by mid-2014.

The 20-year power purchase and implementation agreements for these first projects were signed on November 5, 2012. State-owned power utility Eskom will buy the power arising from the initial eight wind farms for R1.14/kWh. 10

Czech High-speed Link to be Constructed

National Construction Authority Kenya's National Construction Authority (NCA) will subject all contractors operating in the country to an audit that begun in February this year. National Construction Authority chief executive officer, Daniel Manduku, said the decision was reached after National Construction Authority data showed that 80% of the 10,000 contractors in the country are fake.

The National Construction Authority chief executive officer added that the vetting process will make sure contractors are awarded jobs for which they are qualified adding that at least one building collapses every month in Kenya, and NCA has a responsibility to prevent construction accidents by ensuring that contractors are properly vetted.

The exercise will be completed on June 30 and anyone found undertaking construction works without a valid registration certificate will pay a fine of KES1 million, a three-year jail term or both. The NCA is empowered to undertake the vetting process under the National Construction Authority Act 2001, signed into law by President Mwai Kibaki in December 2011.

Guest Sindile Ngonyama Pr Arch / MIArch, South African Institute Architects When Mr. Sindile Ngonyama visited the City of Cape for the first time, in 1975, as a high school student and a son of a migrant labourer, it never dawned to him that a noble profession called architecture even existed. Registering with the University of Cape Town as an architectural student in later years, was not even a pipe dream, as it was completely beyond anybody’s imaginations due to the socio- political situation that existed at the time.

14th September 2012 marked yet another milestone in Mr. Sindile Ngonyama’s life and his professional career, as his name will be added to the list of men and women whom he dearly pays homage to, for having sacrificed their families quality time, and some even their lives, in ensuring that today there is a thriving and respectable body called The South African Institute of Architects.

Mr. Sindile Ngonyama was elected as the new President of SAIA and was officially inaugurated and accepted the chain of office at the CorobrikSAIA Awards Gala Dinner held in Cape Town on the 14th of September, 2012.

This is what he had to say on the day of his inauguration.

It is my view that as SAIA we need to commit to engage in the economic activities happening within our space, promoting responsible utilization of financial, human and biophysical resources, with the view of attaining sustainable future.

“You have afforded me an opportunity to steer this ship, I therefore make an appeal to you all, to give me a chance to do just that. Allow me to take this opportunity to recognise and acknowledge excellent work and massive strides taken by my predecessors, the Past Presidents of SAIA whose names are engraved on this chain, together with all their support teams:- nationally and regionally, some of which were eloquently spelt out earlier by the Immediate Past President Fanuel Motsepe, in his President Report. There is no doubt in my mind that all what SAIA has achieved to date under very trying circumstances, can only be attributed to the vision and leadership of these giants before me”.

Problem Statement As a country, we need to recognise the fact that we are in a state of a crisis, therefore we cannot operate as if it is “business as usual”. We are faced with a situation whereby our economy is not performing well on a global stage, as a result of this, we are experiencing high levels of unemployment, job losses, loss of skills to other countries due to a number of reasons and socio economic challenges which render our country to be an unsustainable welfare state.

Drastic population mobility to urban centres which, themselves have inadequate or no support infrastructure. Like everyone else in the globe, we are faced with challenges associated with

the changes in the climatic and weather patterns, which will continue to affect our Built Environment.

Vision Review of SAIA Engagements with other bodies.

Much as it is my vision and wish to carry through the historical and traditional professional engagements SAIA has had in the past, with various sister bodies, government departments and international structures, we need to pause and take stock of; Whether all these engagements reinforce and enhance our relevance as an Institute to our broader society or whether they allow our Institute to take its rightful position and positively contribute in this dynamic 21st century discourse or whether (without us even knowing) this engagements just stifle our existence in the eyes of our society, and reduce us to an ineffective body that sits somewhere in an ivory tower, singing inaudible praises and beating drums to itself.

Relevance and Repositioning of SAIA to its rightful place in the Built Environment Acknowledging that the construction sector plays a crucial role in the economy of the country, and acknowledging the inherent value of our environment and the limited natural resources, it is my view that as SAIA we need to commit to engage in the economic activities happening within our space, promoting responsible utilization of financial, human and biophysical resources, with the view of attaining sustainable future.

I make this commitment acknowledging the fact that: any country’s wealth, is its people, and that architecture serves the people of the country, it is therefore the duty of our institute to enable our membership to participate meaningfully in the shaping of our built environment so as to ensure that it is suitable for socio-cultural, economic, physical and spiritual activities.

Transformation Agenda With respect to the transformation agenda, let me categorically state that this programme is meant to cut across all our activities as an Institute, therefore it is needless for me to spell out my intentions as my entire Presidential Agenda will directly or indirectly revolve around this issue.

Personality Jeanne Gang Chief Principal, Studio Gang Architects.

Jeanne Gang born in 1964 in Illinois leads Studio Gang Architects, a Chicago-based architecture and design firm.

Jeanne is an architect challenging the aesthetic and technical possibilities of the art form in a wide range of structures. In 2011, for the first time in more than a decade there was an architect among the winners in the annual list of MacArthur Fellows.

Jeanne Gang became the first architect to win the MacArthur Foundation award since Samuel Mockbee, the founder of Auburn University's Rural Studio. Jeanne Gang joined 21 other honorees with each of them receiving a $500,000 cash prize from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation that famously comes with no strings attached.

Always responsive to the specific geography, social and environmental context, and purpose of each project, Gang creates bold yet functional forms for residential, educational, and commercial buildings. Her most highly acclaimed building, Aqua (2010), is an 82-story, mixed-use skyscraper in Chicago of which its balconies create what Gang calls 'an inhabited facade' and give the building, as its name suggests, a liquid personality.

The effect is particularly dramatic if you stand at the base of the tower and look up. From that angle the facade resembles the rolling surface of the ocean.

Her other project is the SOS Children's Villages Lavezzorio Community Center, a 16,800-squarefoot (1,560 m2) foster care community center on Chicago's South Side.

Gang earned a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Illinois in 1986 and a Master of Architecture with Distinction from Harvard University in 1993. In 1989, she was an International Rotary Fellow, and she studied at the ETH Swiss Federal University of Technical Studies in Zurich, Switzerland. Prior to founding her own firm, she worked with OMA/Rem Koolhaas in Rotterdam.

Studio Gang's work has been exhibited at the International Venice Biennale, the National Building Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago, and Gang has been featured in publications such as Metropolis and Architecture Magazine. She has received high honors for her work, including an Academy Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2006.

Gang has taught architecture as an adjunct associate professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology since 1998. She was visiting professor

at the Harvard Graduate School of Design in 2004, held the Louis I. Kahn professor chair at the Yale School of Architecture in 2005, and was the Graduate Design Studio Visiting Lecturer at Princeton University in the spring of 2007.

Her achievements include; Fellow, American Institute of Architects, 2009, "Cultural Heroes," Time Out Chicago, 2008, Iakov Chernikov Prize Nominee, 2008, Academy Award in Architecture, American Academy of Arts and Letters, 2006, Emerging Voices Award, Architecture League of New York, 2006, Rave Award Nominee, Wired Magazine, 2004, Chicagoans of the Year, Chicago Tribune, December 2004 and Design Vanguard, Architectural Record, 2001.

Gang's mastery of the balance between novelty and urban practicality is also evident in the media production Center (2010) for Columbia College of Chicago, an imaginative fusion of found material, engineering, and structural economy that reflects the avant-garde nature of the school's work in film, television, and interactive media.

Her design for the in-progress Ford Calumet Environmental Center, a 27,000-square-foot resource center on an industrial site south of Chicago, includes salvaged materials from the surrounding area and incorporates advanced systems in heating, cooling, and water reclamation.

International projects, such as a major residential complex in Hyderabad, India, that makes use of traditional Indian building methods and materials, further demonstrate Gang's integrative approach to contemporary building. An emerging talent with a diverse and growing body of work, Gang is setting a new industry standard through her effective synthesis of conventional materials, striking composition, and ecologically sustainable technology.

Gang and her firm have lately been pursuing a wide range of projects, including a residential complex in Hyderabad, India, and the Ford Calumet Environmental Center south of Chicago.

Studio Gang is one of five firms engaged by the Museum of Modern Art to explore new prototypes for residential architecture as part of the 2012 exhibit "Foreclosed: Rehousing the American Dream."

Burj Khalifa World’s Tallest Building Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world, and the magnificent centerpiece of Downtown Dubai, a new, world-class destination.

By Emmanuel Onsomu The Burj Khalifa (formerly Burj Dubai) is a large scale mixed-use project primarily consisting of luxury condominiums, and a five-star luxury hotel consisting of hotel units and hotel residences.

Burj Khalifa was officially inaugurated in January 4, 2010. It is the tallest building in the world at 828 m (2717 ft) in all three categories recognized by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), which compiles and ranks the world’s tallest buildings.

CTBUH ranks buildings on the basis of height to the architectural top, to the highest occupied floor and to the tip.The Burj Khalifa is the first mega-high rise in which certain elevators will be programmed to permit controlled evacuation for certain fire or security events. The Burj Khalifa also contains the world’s highest elevator installation. These elevators will be among the world’s fastest at 10 m/sec (25 mph). The tower’s gross area is over 275,000 sm (3,000,000sf) above grade, with a total of 450,000 sm (nearly 5,000,000 sf) including below grade levels.

On a clear day; the tip of the spire can be seen by a person 95 km (60 miles) away. A person in the Observation Deck can see as far away as 80 km (50 miles), which is more than twice the distance from Dubai to Al Ain. (The above viewing distances are based on calculations which include the curvature of the earth). The successful design and engineering of very tall buildings requires an advanced level of knowledge and expertise that few possess. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP were the Project Designers of this magnificent piece of architecture.

They also provided the engineering team. In addition to these key project participants, SOM had a team of over 90 people at work on the project, including architects, structural and MEP engineers, and administration personnel.

Burj Khalifa reflects the patterning systems embodied in Islamic architecture and reflects the global community it is designed to serve.

The tower is composed of three “wing” elements arranged around a central core. As the tower rises from the flat desert base, setbacks occur at the end bay of each “wing” in an upward-spiraling pattern, decreasing the mass of the tower as it reaches toward the sky.

A high performance exterior cladding system allows the building to withstand the extreme temperatures experienced during the summer months in Dubai. Engineering Design SOM invented a new structural system, called a buttressed core, which enabled the building’s efficient and economic build out. The design for Burj Khalifa went through extensive wind tunnel testing, resulting in a building that resists high winds while minimizing vibration. Taking advantage of the height, SOM invented a “skysourcing” cooling system to maximize ambient air. It pulls cooler air from the top of the building (which is on average 7° C cooler than the ground) and forces it back down through the building to keep it cool.

Interior Design Planning of the building’s interior space began at the earliest stages of structural and architectural development, was integral to the design process and informed the building from within. The interior design was inspired by the dual influences of the building’s technological accomplishments and the regional culture and heritage. As the tallest living and working spaces in the world, the interiors of Burj Khalifa’s highest floors take celestial influences similar to a stationary spacecraft. This is in contrast to the lower floors, which are inspired by natural elements of the land.

Structural System Safety Considerations The Burj Khalifa has been designed and engineered to maximize occupant comfort and safety. Extensive wind tunnel testing enables the building to resist high wind loads while minimizing vibration. The tower’s structural system is designed for seismic conditions (similar to a Uniform Building Code zone 2A). Reinforced concrete slabs and corridor walls provide an inherently high resistance to fires.

The structural system of the Burj Khalifa utilizes high performance concrete as its primary material. The tower’s lateral load resisting system provides resistance to wind and seismic forces.

It is comprised of high-performance, reinforced concrete core walls linked to the exterior columns through a series of reinforced concrete shear wall panels at the mechanical levels.The typical floor system consists of a reinforced concrete flat plate. The building’s foundation is a thick high performance reinforced concrete mat supported on piles. At the top of the tower, a spire (with occupied space inside) makes the building the tallest tower in the world. The lateral load resisting system of the upper steel structure consists of a structural steel megabracing system that is founded on the top of the reinforced concrete core wall.

Galleria Centercity in Cheonan Eye Shopping, Re - conquering the public domain within a commercial destination

By Emmanuel Onsomu UNStudio's Galleria Centercity department store in the Korean city of Cheonan reclaims the social and cultural space within the private, commercial large scale department store.

Rather than being the outcome of a prescriptive, standard-critical approach, the design of the Galleria Centercity is based on observations of current behavioural tendencies in large commercial spaces. Particularly in South East Asia, department stores serve a highly social function. People meet, gather, eat, drink and both shop and window shop in these venues.

The department store is no longer solely a commercial space, it now offers the architect the opportunity to build upon and expand the social and cultural experience of the visitor. If today we are seeing the museum as a supermarket, then we are also now seeing the department store as a museum.“If museums are turning into supermarkets, why then should department stores 20

not turn into museums?” says Ben van Berkel, CoFounder / Principal Architect UNStudio. He adds that the Galleria Cheonan responds to the current retail climate in Asia, where department stores also operate as social and semi-cultural meeting places and that because of this, the quality of the public spaces within the building was treated as an integral aspect of the design.

An expanded interpretation of utility beyond efficiency and profitability is at the heart of the design. In view of this, along with a more varied programme, UNStudio’s design seeks to provide a stimulating experience for the visitor. On the outside, this is translated into an appearance that is almost impossible to fix. The double layered facades are articulated in a trompe l’oeuil pattern of vertical mullions. The vertical lines on the façade make the scale of the building unreadable; does it contain three floor levels, or fifteen?

On the inside, this play with scale and dimension is continued in a way that is at least as radical as

the outside. Upon entering, the department store is revealed as a layered and varied space which encourages investigation and unfolds as you move through and up the building. Programmatically, the Galleria Cheonan incorporates a number of cultural and public spaces, including an art and cultural centre and a VIP room. In the basement, a food court and specialty supermarket constitutes another distinct destination within the building, which is simultaneously integrated with the overall design strategy.

Cheonan –New city development as platform for innovation Situated some 80km south of Seoul, Cheonan is well connected to the capital by railway and road, with a new high speed rail link having recently been completed. The area around the new high speed terminal is under development and - prominently visible from the main road - the Galleria Centercity marks the entrance to this new development area. that, because of the organisation of the atrium and the moiré treatment of the facade, Illusions are created which result in the seeming alteration of scales and the creation of double images. No image is permanent in this building." says Ben van Berkel.

Dynamic Flow and optical illusion on a grand scale The main architectural theme for the Galleria Cheonan is that of dynamic flow. This is found both inside and outside. The architecture of the 66,000 m ² building responds to its central position by presenting a deliberately changeable aspect all-around. Moiré effects, special lighting and animations ensure that the outside changes appearance constantly.

are linked to the central void. This organisation propels a fluent upstream flow of people through the building, from the ground floor atrium to the roof terrace. As the plateaus are positioned in a rotational manner in space, they enable the central space to encompass way finding, vertical circulation, orientation and act as main attractor of the department store. The spatial and visual connections within the space are designed to generate a lively and stimulating environment, in which the user is central.

The double layered facade encloses the building, with a number of strategic openings incorporated into the inner facade layer. These openings provide daylight to the interior. At the same time, the lamellas of the outer façade prevent direct sunlight from entering the building, ensuring a cooler environment, while the use of white finishes throughout the interior minimises the need for artificial lighting.

Media facade - The largest illuminated surface of its kind in the world The strategy for the building enclosure consists of creating an optical illusion. During the day the building has a monochrome reflective appearance, whilst at night soft colours are used to generate waves of coloured light across the large scale illuminated surface. The lighting design was developed in parallel with the architecture and capitalises on the double layered facade structure. Computer generated animations specially designed by UNStudio are incorporated into the lighting design and refer to themes related to the department store, such as fashion, events, art and public life.

The interior derives its character from the accumulation of rounded plateaus on long columns. The repetition of curves, enhanced by coiled strip lighting in the ceilings of the platforms, gives the interior its distinctive character. A kitchen is not something you fit often and you are likely to have to live with any mistakes for years to come. Before embarking on looking for a supplier consult friends who have installed a fitted kitchen.

They are likely to give you some invaluable advice on the do’s and don’ts. In addition scour design magazines for ideas and tips. This should give you a pretty good idea on costs, design and layouts that will work for you. When time comes to pick out a supplier, look up any online reviews.

These are likely to be from dissatisfied customers unfortunately but they will be a valuable pointer.

Also ask for references. A supplier should be glad to offer these if he is proud of his workmanship.

Wind Turbines

By Yvonne Andiva Wind power is plentiful, renewable and widely distributed. It is also the fastest growing renewable energy source in the world despite its higher capital requirements. Today, many countries have put in place policies to promote the development of wind power as a supplementary source of electrical energy. Wind farms have proved beneficial for supplying power to remote locations as well as a source supplying the national grid.

In Kenya, the Lake Turkana Wind Power Project (LTWP) aims to provide 300MW of reliable, low cost wind power to the Kenya national grid, equivalent to approximately 20% of the current installed electricity generating capacity.The Project is of significant strategic benefit to Kenya, and at Ksh75 billion (US$880 million) will be the largest single private investment in Kenya’s history. These are but one of several projects being mooted or in development stage in several countries in Africa.

Turbines The most important component required to generate electricity from wind power is the turbine which converts the kinetic energy from the rotating rotors to electricity.The turbines and rotor

blades are undergoing continuous technological development to ensure higher efficiencies are achieved. In this article we look at the key players and the emerging trends in wind power generation that you should know about.

ALIZEO’s tiltable turbines.

ALIZEO designs and manufactures wind turbines in its own factories produce wind turbines dedicated to strong winds (tilting to the ground level) and has other proprieties as ground assembly and easy maintenance which are useful for Developed Countries. You don't have to use big cranes for installation and services.

Their wind turbines have defined three innovations which are premiums in the world, 1st wind turbine to use a low depth concrete foundation (2 meters) that is fully dismountable in end of using (Patented and a nice ecological approach), 1st wind turbine in the world using a counterweight, hydraulic controlled balanced system (Patented) that are by simply pressing on a button in less than one hour, 1st tiltable wind turbine with a synchronous generator; permanent magnets and a direct drive.

The ALIZEO tiltable mast has specially adapted on its top a SOFTWIND generator. SOFTWIND is an Aero generators’ builder (Subsidiary of

ALIZEO). There are currently 52 machines installed for customers in production since several years; they give excellent results. These electrical generators have three added values: reliability, quality of produced current and are relatively silent. This technology is considered to be top of the range. On the market, a fixed 1MW wind turbine is generally fitted with 50m diameter blades to prevent them from winds destructions.

But the blades are the motor of a wind turbine, they need to be the largest possible!!!

The tiltable wind turbine (IEC Class S Special Protection against strong winds) allows fitting 70m diameter blades, normally not allowed for a 1MW turbine due to risks of their destruction. The electricity produced by an Alizeo turbine reaches the double than a fixed 1MW / 50m wind turbine in medium winds (due to the blades diameter going from 50 to 70m). 70m diameter blades are normally fitted on a 2MW fixed wind turbine; it’s to say that our 1MW tiltable wind turbine annual production with 70m diameter blades could be compared to a fixed 2MW /70m production in medium winds.
