Negotiation and Conflict Resolution Skills You Can Use

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Construction Institute, University of Hartford are offering a session for practicing engineers on the topic of movable bridges. We will cover the civil and structural engineering considerations of designing movable bridges.

This 4-hour workshop provides an overview of why conflict feels stressful, how we can overcome the stress, and the importance of negotiation and conflict resolution skills in our personal and professional lives. Participants will be given negotiation role playing exercises which will then be discussed as a group.

Learn the basics of movable bridges, both highway and railroad.

• Discuss current AREMA and AASHTO code requirements regarding movable bridges.

• Learn the civil and structural engineering process of designing movable bridges.

Workshop participants should have a background in structural engineering, but not specifically in the field of railroad bridges.

Meeting the varied scheduling needs of those involved in a construction project may be the most difficult challenge we will face as we create and manage a project schedule.

The project schedule must be presented in a format that clearly communicates the project goals to multiple entities. This workshop leads participants through a hands-on application based learning exercise using an example project that reflects the challenges we face when scheduling a project.

Every project participant makes decisions that have potential legal ramifications and resultant additional costs. This workshop, with an attorney and claims consultant as instructors, will show participants how early knowledge of potential problems is the price of success.

Discuss contractual issues to be considered when developing and managing a project schedule.

Become aware of common schedule manipulation tricks and ploys.
