CONSTRUCTION CHANGE MANAGEMENT: LEADING THROUGH CHANGE

The Construction Institute and Mix Education Services LLC. are offering a four-hour workshop for Construction Leaders, Executives, Project Managers and Superintendents on the topic of leading through Change.

The construction industry is evolving at a fast pace. In a time of change, many employees can resist, making it hard to keep your company on the cutting edge. Leaders and managers within the organization need to know how to build resiliency in their company by understanding the effects of rapid change on human performance.

Learning Objectives:

1. Be able to identify the guarantees of change

2. Understand the 5 stages of change on human performance

3. Identify how different personality styles react under pressure and change

BECOMING A PROBLEM SOLVER: DEALING WITH CONFLICT AS A NORMAL PART OF BUSINESS

Master problem solving skills you need to cope with unexpected conflicts that arise during the course of doing business - including on a construction project.

This is an interactive workshop with training and role-playing exercises. Participants will leave the workshop with a problem-solving toolkit and new approaches to support successful outcomes.

The Construction Institute

Nancy Greenwald, Executive Director of the Construction Institute, has 38 years of experience as a lawyer and business executive in the AEC/FM industry, dealing with projects ranging from $50,000 to $9 billion. A Fellow of the American College of Construction Lawyers, she serves on the American Arbitration Association’s Construction and Commercial Industry Panels and has been appointed as an arbitrator and mediator by numerous private clients and courts. She speaks frequently and teaches best practices in arbitration and mediation, construction project communication, and dispute systems design.

MOVEABLE BRIDGE ENGINEERING

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, at the University of Hartford, and the Construction Institute are offering a 1-day workshop for practicing engineers on the topic of movable bridges. This course will cover the civil and structural engineering considerations of designing movable bridges.

Participants will have a background in structural engineering, but not specifically in the field of movable bridges. The workshop will include photos of movable bridges and bridge components to better illustrate the lecture material. Each student will receive copies of portions of the AREMA and AASHTO manual sections relating to movable bridges. NOTE: This session does not cover mechanical or electrical design.

Learning Objectives:

1. Learn the basics of movable bridges, both highway and railroad

2. Discuss the current AREMA and AASHTO manual requirements regarding movable brudges

3. Learn the civil and structural engineering process of designing movable bridges

4. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of 3 types of movable bridges (vertical-lift, horizontal swing and bascule)

University of Hartford

David Jacobs teaches at the University of Hartford. He is retired from Metro-North Railroad and is an experienced senior manager. He was PM on Metro-North’s PECK drawbridge (Bridgeport), reconstruction of Manhattan’s Park Avenue tunnel and rehabilitation of Metro-North’s five movable bridges. Jacobs was the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers 2019 recipient of their prestigious Benjamin Wright Award. He is currently working as a consultant on the design of the new Metro-North RR vertical lift bridge in Norwalk. He holds a PhD in structural engineering from the University of Connecticut.

RAILROAD BRIDGE ENGINEERING

Participants should have a background in structural engineering, but not specifically in the field of railroad bridges. Each student will receive copies of portions of the AREMA manual sections relating to bridge design and rating, plus the PowerPoint presentation used during the workshop.

Learning Objectives:

1. Cover the basics of the different types of railroad bridge decks

2. Cover the current AREMA manual requirements regarding steel bridges

3. Go through a detailed step-bystep design of a railroad bridge, as well as the rating of an existing bridge

4. Although concentration will be on steel bridges, discussion of concrete and wood structures will also be included

Cocco serves on the Government Relations and 5/15 Leadership Committee with the NASBP and has been a frequent guest speaker at various construction summits representing the surety industry. He is a lifelong Connecticut resident and a graduate of the University of Connecticut.

Remember: many of our courses are streamed! Cancellations must be made 10 business days prior to the workshop, course, or webinar for a refund. If the invoiced amount is outstanding, the entire amount will still be due to the Construction Institute. Substitutions may be made before the start date of any workshop. Workshops may be rescheduled due to instructor conflict or severe weather. We reserve the right to cancel due to insufficient enrollment, in which case workshop fees will be refunded in full.
