2018 WOA EYES SHATTERING RECORDS The 2016 World of Asphalt Show & Conference and AGG1 Academy & Expo in Nashville, Tenn., broke records. With record attendance, exhibit and education numbers, the show registered attendance of more than 9,000, which represented 18 percent over the previously record-setting 2015 shows and 38 percent growth compared with 2013. Attendees came from all 50 states, nine of the 10 Canadian provinces and more than 60 other countries worldwide. Houston Is Open for Business — and Ready to Set Records The city went through a lot in 2017. Hurricane Harvey may have wreaked havoc in Houston, but true to the Texas’ strong reputation, it could not keep Texans down for long. The city has been rebounding and with optimism abounding in the construction industry, the 2018 World of Asphalt Show and Conference to be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston is expected to set even more records. In addition to an incredible number of exhibitors signed up to showcase their products and services and registered attendees, educational opportunity will be in abundance, too. A Plethora of Learning Opportunities Aggregates and asphalt industry professionals can take advantage of more than 120 learning opportunities at the 2018 World of Asphalt and AGG1 Academy & Expo to explore industry trends, technologies, solutions and best practices. A mix of new and back-by-popular-demand sessions covers areas including technology, regulatory, safety and health, environment, operations/production and management. The focused education complements the shows’ exhibits of the newest equipment, products and services from leading industry manufacturers and suppliers. The sessions are brought to you by the

People, Plants & Paving Conference from the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) and the AGG1 Academy from the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA). For maximum flexibility, the conferences offer several ticket options, with no pre-selection of specific sessions required. Additional learning options, presented by NSSGA, include two Quarry Tours and Basic Supervisory Training and Strategic Sales Training programs. Developed and delivered by industry experts, the targeted sessions emphasize realworld strategies and offer actionable knowledge that both beginning and experienced professionals can use in their business operations and on the job site.

“Education has always been at our forefront to meet a real demand for quality asphalt industry education that is comprehensive and conveniently offered. Attendees can learn directly from the experts and interact with peers; it’s a great opportunity to invest in themselves to increase their knowledge and help their companies prosper,” said Kevin Kelly, president of Walsh & Kelly and World of Asphalt 2018 chair. “Our employees are our most valuable resource, and the AGG1 Academy offers a tremendous value for aggregates producers to invest in that resource by boosting our workforce’s skills and knowledge,” said Joel Galassini, regional president of CEMEX and see WOA page 21

ARTBA Sees Growth in 2018 As part of ARTBA’s contractor survey, they ask for contractors’ outlook for equipment fleet size. The vast majority of transportation contractors expect to maintain their fleet size, which projects a perception of market stability. For paving and compaction equipment, the outlook is even more positive, with 12 percent expecting to grow their fleets and only 3 percent expecting to reduce fleet size. Here are some highlights from ARTBA’s 2018 transportation forecast: • ARTBA is estimating a 3.2 percent increase in total domestic transportation construction in 2018 after last year’s 2.8 percent drop. • ARTBA estimates that public and private highway, street construction and related construction markets will see a 2.4 percent increase in 2018 after last year’s drop. • The biggest markets for overall growth include California, Florida, Hawaii, New York, Virginia and Washington. • The real value of public highway, street and related construction in 2009 was $68 billion. That dropped down to $52.2 billion in 2013, and had begun to climb upwards again to $60.6 billion in 2016, before dipping down again to $56.8 billion last year. Over the next five years, ARTBA is predicting slow but steady growth, up to $63.2 billion in 2022. • Voter support for transportation funding remains strong, approving $4.25 billion in transportation funding Nov. 7, 2017. • Almost half of contractors surveyed by ARTBA expect normal or above normal growth in the next 12 months. This optimism has been trending upward since a low of 4 percent in the third quarter of 2011, spiking at 60 percent and 59 percent in Q1 of 2016 and 2017, respectively. • Airport runway investments have been all over the board since 2009: up and down, with a big dip down in 2017. They’re expected to increase year upon year through 2022.

Guardian is a telematics tool that records and transmits valuable machine data, in real time.

Paving jobs need to be completed on time, on budget and safely. Time is money and ignorance is no excuse, so it is essential to be aware of all job site activity in real time. That’s easier said than done. With multiple jobs in remote locations, it’s challenging to know exactly what is happening at each site. A product from Roadtec solves this issue: Guardian Telematics.

Guardian do the work for you,” said Eric Baker, director of marketing and sales support of Roadtec. Guardian records data that can be accessed anytime, anywhere. Even if a machine is functioning well and there are no error codes, there is still a wealth of useful data that can be recorded and accessed. This data can be used to schedule labor, plan preventative maintenance, and accurately bid jobs.

2-Way Communication Guardian is a telematics tool that records and transmits valuable machine data, in real time. While other systems sound similar, there is nothing exactly like it because Guardian enables a live two-way wireless communication between the machine and a remote location.

More Than Error Codes While some systems may send only GPS location or faults codes, Guardian provides much more, such as real time, detailed monitoring of the engine, hydraulic, electrical and grade control systems. Roadtec customer service personnel can remotely view the machine in real time and provide customer service, anytime, anywhere. When issues arise, operators and service technicians work together to make necessary modifications immediately. All that’s needed is a smart phone, computer or other web-enabled device. With Guardian, owners, onsite teams and remote technicians are all immediately aware of issues, so they can be solved as efficiently as possible. The owner can view the machine’s speed, location, engine load and fuel usage, all in real time, without being on the job site. For more information, call 800/272-7100 or visit Roadtec.com.

Work Smarter Data is great, but only if it is timely, accurate and used in a purposeful way; otherwise it’s just a bunch of numbers that don’t mean much to anyone. Guardian makes it easy. The information is displayed in a simple format so it can be used right away and to the best effect. Guardian’s intuitive Live Schematics lets owners and technicians view electrical circuits in a simple, efficient layout with real time status of switches, valves, and settings. “Our goal is to preserve uptime through the power of information. SCREEN MACHINE From coast to coast and industry to industry, the new Screen Machine 4043TR recirculating impact crusher is a machine for a variety of purposes and a variety of finished products. First made available at ConExpo in 2017, the 4043TR is now doing work in a variety of applications, from asphalt to concrete to demolition. “We developed the 4043TR because we knew there was a need for a midsize impact crusher/screen with recirculating capability,” said Matt Brinkman, director of engineering at Screen Machine. “It’s ideal for locations where a smaller footprint is needed, like road construction or demolition. “But customers also are taking advantage of the fact that the recirculating conveyor can be used as a side stacker, to provide two products.” The 4043TR begins with all the power of the Screen Machine 4043T impact crusher. The crusher unit measures 40 by 43 in. (101.6 by 109 cm) with two active blow bars and two dummy bars. What makes the 4043T — and the 4043TR — unique, however, is both are equipped with Screen Machine’s crusher relief system. This system allows the crusher lid to be raised via remote control up to 6 in. (15 cm) — while the unit is in operation. The result is fewer stoppages due to overloading the crusher, and more production time, according to the manufacturer. Where the 4043TR distinguishes itself from its older brother is the front of the unit, where a 5 by 12 ft. (1.5 by 3.6 m) shaker screen with a relief deck are mounted. The 4043TR features another Screen Machine exclusive on the screenbox, Smooth Start technology. Smooth Start eliminates stress to the machine due to slow speed, violent shaking that is typically encountered during start-up and shut-down. At slow speeds, a spring-loaded counterweight is retracted, which allows the screen to rotate smoothly, with very little “shake.” Once the machine has achieved operating speed (1,100 rpm), however, the counterweight extends to create the shake necessary for screening.

The 4043TR performs the work of two separate machines — a crusher and a screen — in a single, more compact unit.

Customers may choose from a variety of screen sizes for the 4043TR, based on the material they are crushing and screening. After the material is crushed and screened, the 4043TR routes them accordingly. The primary desired product rolls off the fines conveyor. Overs are routed to the recirculating conveyor, where they can be put back in the hopper for reprocessing, or the conveyor can be positioned perpendicular to the unit for use as a side stacker. A pre-crusher side stacker also is located under the hopper to collect material that does not need to be run through the crusher. A pre-crusher flop gate allows the operator to direct that material to the main conveyor or to the side stacker. The 4043TR performs the work of two separate machines — a crusher and a screen — in a single, more compact unit. As noted above, this is important when space is limited — such as in an urban demolition setting or along a highway. Customers also appreciate the fact that the 4043TR does the work of two units at a more economical price than purchasing, operating and maintaining a separate crusher and screening plant.

10

The 4043TR also features a PMC control panel with touchscreen display that provides total insight on the performance and upkeep of the unit. The 4043TR was the first Screen Machine product to feature this panel, but all Screen Machine crushers produced in 2018 will have this technology included. Screen Machine has been producing screening plants, crushers, trommels and conveyors in central Ohio since 1966. Screen Machine products are manufactured with U.S. Standard components (not metric). Much of the structure of Screen Machine products are built with USA-made Grade 80 steel. “For more than 50 years, Screen Machine has built a reputation for making tough, reliable, innovative and hard-working machines,” said Brinkman. “With the 4043TR, we have taken all those qualities to a higher level. The response from customers from coast to coast has been extremely positive and demand has been very high.” The 4043TR will be the featured product in the Screen Machine booth (#1134). RUBBLE MASTER The crushing world has changed over the past decades. Crushing and recycling is no longer exclusive to quarries, road builders and large contractors. As markets change and the industry develops, small and medium-size contractors are realizing that the only way to increase profits is to start crushing and recycling on site. Compact crushers offer contractors the ability to crush on site, generating profits and saving their customers money like never before. With virtually no change in jobsite process, the contractor now has the flexibility of recycling construction debris, revolutionizing their business and bidding processes. The days of trucking and disposing concrete, asphalt and natural rock rubble are over. Large and small contractors alike benefit from a compact machine. Instead of building massive piles of rubble they can mobilize a compact machine quickly and efficiently between different yards and job sites. For more than 25 years Rubble Master has been designing and developing high production compact crushers. Through its designs and innovations, Rubble Master has developed machines with industry leading weight and performance far outshining conventional crushing

make it right for our customer. We have learned many lessons along the way. It almost seems like we never took the easy way,” said Gerald Hanisch, owner and president of Rubble Master. The Rubble Master RM 120GO! Compact Crusher is Rubble Master latest addition and current flagship machine. This unit proves that Rubble Master can build a 385 tph (depending on material) closed circuit impactor weighing less than 90,000 lbs. The result is a high production machine that can still be moved with a single lowboy. Machine setup takes a single operator 15 minutes without the need of any hand tools. The RM120GO! places Rubble Master in the same caliber of other machines weighing 30,000 lbs. more and requiring laborious onsite assembly. The RM 120GO! is an ideal tool for any size contractor, custom crushing contractors, quarry operations and road builders. And because it’s a Rubble Master, customers can expect to see 30 percent less fuel burn over traditional crushers of the same size. For more information, visit www.rubblemaster.com.

KASI INFARED Potholes, trench cuts and other asphalt repairs are the bane of property managers, public works managers and road crews . . . ubiquitous, time-consuming, expensive to repair, tie up traffic and are hazardous to passenger cars, trucks, cyclists, skaters and pedestrians. Infrared asphalt repair technology enables property managers, city, county and state road crews to save tons of time, material and labor costs in repairing hazardous potholes, alligator cracking, failed utility cuts and other surface defects that plague their asphalt streets and parking lots year round. The infrared technique also provides repairs to roads, parking lots and driveways at savings of up to two-thirds the cost of conventional methods. As opposed to conventional repair, which requires the removal of old asphalt from a damaged site and its replacement with new asphalt, infrared technology expedites repair by heating, fusing, and compacting recycled asphalt, saving equipment, labor, and new material in the process, according to KASI Infrared Corp. The infrared system has enhanced operations by reducing repair time and allowing repair of larger surface areas. It also does a better repair then just filling a pothole or alligator cracking with new asphalt. A road crew can load up a couple of tons of asphalt and be busy all day. In addition to saving time, infrared repair technology enables crews to recycle a substantial portion of the old asphalt, saving on materials costs as well.

Truck- and trailer-mounted units.

While public safety from road hazards is always a high priority, exposure to liability claims may also be important to many property management companies and local governments, particularly those who are self insured. Potholes and other types of failures have to be taken seriously, It doesn’t take much to create a hazard. It could be cracks or potholes or any type of imperfection. Infrared equipment

18

has a unique capacity in overcoming asphalt failure problems quickly. You simply drop the heater on it, heat it up for awhile, rejuvenate much of the old, damaged asphalt, and then you resurface and seal it. The road surface is pretty much back to new when the process is completed. Using an infrared asphalt reclaiming and repair system, the savings on labor and repair time as well as materials are very substantial. Infrared restorations fuse to the existing pavement, creating a continuous surface. This eliminates the need for tack-coating the edges because the seams have been eliminated, enhances durability, and allows roads to be opened to traffic immediately. It also makes the repair process less expensive, since existing asphalt is recycled, crew size is typically limited to two; and only a single truck or trailer is used. These benefits have made the use of infrared systems highly popular with independent contractors and state and local governments.

EAGER

BEAVER

Eager Beaver 50GSL-PT-BW

The Eager Beaver 50GSL-PT-BW is a cross between a standard lowboy with a boomwell and the company’s PT paver trailer. Over the past several years, Eager Beaver’s paver trailer line has become its most popular style of lowboy. Whether loading a paver or an excavator, customers have found that the low

loading angle of the PT series is just a better way to load their equipment, according to the company. The customer base for the PT series is no longer limited to asphalt contractors so Eager Beaver has opened up the rear deck to make it even more useful for all types of equipment.

19

The boomwell allows for the transportation of larger excavators while the low approach angle and the wood-covered riser still allow for the loading of rollers, skid steers and other small equipment up onto the rear deck. This new line is available in 35, 50, 55 and 60 ton (31.7, 45, 50 and 54 t) capacities.

T

he World of Asphalt has changed immensely over the last 50 years. Today nearly all asphalt pavement resurfacing projects require milling. The tailings are recycled by blending a percentage into a new mix. Milling is also performed in highway reconstruction and during new construction as well. The equipment and methods employed in asphalt paving has also experienced a revolution of technological change.

The Lane Construction Corporation set up this 3-ton Hetherington & Berner asphalt plant to handle paving the southern 37 miles of the Maine Turnpike extension in 1954. Lane held a $4,178,388 contract for the work. Lane setup a quarry near Gorham, Maine, to crush the 250,000 tons of stone needed. Lane remains in business today with a 125 year legacy. It is one of the largest transportation contractors in the nation.

FAE USA INC . By Stefano Leghissa SPECIAL TO CEG

With thousands of miles of road, the United States of America relies on its infrastructure for business, leisure and military purposes. Now more than ever, the state of infrastructure, and its rehabilitation, are a central piece of discussion in Washington, D.C. Several highly qualified contractors will be bidding on infrastructure projects to streamline travel and communication. Most of these key players will be attending World Of Asphalt in Houston, Texas, from March 6 through 8, where the most advanced pieces of road construction equipment will be displayed. The FAE Group, a leader in engineering, manufacturing and marketing of mulchers and road construction attachments, will be at the frontline showcasing its tractor-driven MTL225 and MTH225. Both machines belong to FAE’ s MultiTask line and are capable of reclaiming/milling asphalt, mix lime/cement, crushing rocks and rock slabs and grinding stumps all with the same tooth and rotor. The MTL is FAE’s smallest multitask unit and requires a 180 - 240 hp tractor equipped with IVT/CVT transmission. This attachment supports an 87 in. (221 cm) wide rotor and can reach depths of up to 6 in. (15 cm) in asphalt

and 11 in. (28 cm) in soft, broken up terrain. The MTL also is capable of grinding 8 in. (20 cm) rocks and stumps. Looking at the MTH, FAE’s largest Multitask unit, an IVT/CVT transmission is required along with 320 – 400 hp to get operating. The MTH has a 92 in. (233.6 cm) wide rotor, is capable of grinding up to 13 in. (33 cm) of asphalt, and can reach a depth of up to 20 in. (51 cm) when mixing in soft, broken up terrain. The MTH also is capable of grinding rocks and stumps up to 12 in. (30.5 cm) wide. Due to its independent rotor, gearboxes and fully integrated water system, the MultiTask

line presents itself as a valuable alternative to self-propelled units. They have lower CAPEX and OPEX, along with better maneuverability and visibility. Another advantage is the versatility of having a tractor in a fleet. When the MultiTask attachment is not in use, the tractor can still be used to run other equipment. Several contractors have chosen FAE for railroad construction, airport projects, heavy highway work, federal projects, pipeline construction, wind farm installation and many more, according to the company.
