The 2011 International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition (ICUEE), the second largest in show history, was held Oct. 4 to 6 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Ky. The show attracted nearly 16,600 registered attendees to interact with more than 800 exhibitors, showing equipment and products on more than 1.1 million net sq. ft. of displays and extensive hands-on equipment demonstrations in joblike conditions. “We’re very pleased and gratified by industry support of the show with these strong numbers during a still-recovering economy,” said ICUEE Show Director Melissa Magestro. “Despite some uncertain market conditions, our industry is looking ahead to be ready for future business."” Registrants came from all 50 states, all 10 Canadian provinces and more than 40 other countries worldwide. Returning to ICUEE were the H2O-XPO of the National Rural Water Association and the iP Safety Conference and Expo. The Association of Equipment Management Professionals (AEMP) sponsored a new Fleet see ICUEE page 28

The amount contractors pay for a range of key construction materials held steady in September but climbed 8.1 percent from the year-earlier level, according to an analysis of producer price index figures released Oct. 18 by the Associated General Contractors of America. Meanwhile, the price contractors charge for new nonresidential building construction edged up only 2 to 3 percent over 12 months, depending on building type. “Feeble demand for construction is forcing contractors to absorb the bulk of materials price hikes, instead of passing them along to owners,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “This pattern has persisted for more than two years, and many contractors are increasingly at risk of going under.” Simonson noted that key materials showed divergent price trends in September but all posted double-digit year-over-year increases. Those materials include diesel fuel, which was up 3.3 percent for the month and 39.4 percent since September 2010; copper and brass mills shapes, see PRICES page 32

Okla. Governor Announces Plan to Fix Bad Bridges By Tim Talley ASSOCIATED PRESS

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin is supporting a plan to repair all 706 deficient highway bridges in the state by 2019. Fallin and state transportation officials revealed details of the plan Oct. 3. It includes increasing the amount of revenue set aside for road and bridge repairs by $15 million a year and raising total funding for transportation to $550 million.

Fallin also supports recycling structural steel from the Interstate 40 Crosstown Expressway to rebuild deficient county bridges. The expressway is scheduled to be replaced next year. Oklahoma ranks second in the nation, behind only Pennsylvania, in the number of bridges rated structurally deficient. But a report by Washington, D.C.-based The Road Information Program in April indicated the state had reduced the number of structurally deficient, state-maintained bridges by 32 percent.

SANY America has established a program with GE Capital to expand wholesale and retail financing solutions for distributors and their end user clients. Western States CAT Holds First Rodeo Championship

he inaugural Western States Rodeo championship was held Aug. 27 near the College of Western Idaho campus in Nampa. More than 250 spectators watched Stephen Bauman, project manager of Pipe of Washington Inc. win the event. The championship event was the conclusion of a heavy equipment rodeo tour held throughout the summer at 12 locations across Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington where Western States CAT has a local branch location. The rodeo series kicked off in late May and featured a total of 767 competitors with 3,500 spectators watching the events. The championship win earned Bauman a 2011 Ford F-250 pickup truck grand prize and the title of best heavy equipment operator in the territories Western States serves. He also won a Cat 226B3 skid steer for his sponsoring company, Pipe of Washington Inc. During the championship 12 finalists competed for the grand prize in skillfocused contests using a variety of equipment, each with a new twist or substantial change from the regional events to provide additional challenges. A fifth mystery round was not unveiled until the final event which ultimately determined Bauman as the winner, when he overcame a considerable margin held by then front-runner Tyler Crofts of McAlvain Construction. Finalists were split into groups on random draws for the first four events, which included a Cat 420 backhoe tire-stacking event with more tires, a more complex Cat 299 CLT (compact track loader) obstacle course and Cat 320 excavator and Cat 950 wheel loader challenges with larger equipment and additional elements that involved engaging and disengaging buckets and other fork attachments. As part of its commitment to giving back to the communities where its employees live and serve customers, Western States CAT has donated more than $7,000 to local charities at every rodeo location throughout the series. Cat, Ford, Carhartt and DeWalt were among the more than twenty industry sponsors that have provided prizes to participants and event attendees.

Crushing, Screening & Recycling Section MB Crusher Bucket Celebrates 10 Years of Innovation in Construction It has been 10 years since MB made the crusher bucket available to the earth movement world. The crusher bucket works by taking advantage of the excavator system and can be used in many fields of application. The excavation site must then be filled in again, thus requiring other trips to the waste dump, but this time to purchase the same material that was dumped just a few days before, which in the meantime has been crushed and prepared in the right size to fill in the trenches.

Obviously, the material must be paid for and hauled to the work site. Using an MB crusher bucket reduces costs and times needed for the disposal and procurement process, up to fully eliminating them. In fact, the material is already at the work site, where it can be reused after having gone through demolition processes using pneumatic hammers and pliers. Subsequently, with the MB crusher bucket the material is collected and crushed in the desired diameter and unloaded directly by the bucket onto the truck or in another location, and can thus be used again, for example, to build yards, road embankments, drainage works and to fill in various excavations. The Associated General Contractors of America will launch a new fall protection safety training program next year due to a new federal safety grant the association is being awarded. The association will use the $130,000 Susan Hardwood Training Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to tackle one of the most pressing safety issues in construction, officials said. “The new training program will help us continue to make construction safer for millions of workers,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “This is another sign of the commitment our association and our members have to improving construction safety.” Sandherr said that while the overall number of construction fatalities has declined by nearly 50 percent over the past five years, fall-related fatalities remain the single largest cause of construction deaths, Sandherr said. Sandherr. “Even if construction prices rebound in the near future, it is still a lot less expensive to maintain infrastructure while it is operating than to fix it once it breaks.”

Case 327B, 330B Artic Trucks Feature More Horsepower The Case 327B and 330B articulated trucks feature more horsepower, an ergonomically designed cab and a variety of service and maintenance features. They also feature the same technology as the rest of the Case 300 Series ADT line, such as an integrated differential, variable geometry turbocharger, auto warm-up system and selfdiagnosed fluid-level checks. The certified, electronically controlled Case 10-L engines provide greater performance, efficiency and reduced emissions. The four-stroke, turbocharged, air-to-air cooled diesel engines utilize unit injectors that increase the pressure of fuel entering each cylinder, above and beyond the pressure coming off the common rail. The engines also feature a variable geometry turbocharger that provides an optimized air-to-fuel mixture for peak performance to move more material per hour, according to the manufacturer. design that offers enhanced forward visibility, the 327B and 330B also feature a floor-toceiling glass cab door, providing more visibility to the side. The upper window in the new glass door opens for ventilation while controlling dust entry into the cab. Along with swing-out fenders and flipforward hood, the Case 327B and 330B articulated trucks offer a tilt cab that gives service technicians accessibility to the drivelines, transmission, hydraulic valves and lines, so preventative maintenance checks are completed with minimal effort. Maintenance checks are performed at ground level, with fluid sight glasses and access panels mounted on the hood. An automatic lubrication system continuously greases all lubrication points from a central distribution block. The 327B and 330B models retain the wide frame and low dump body. The wider bottom of the bed provides a lower center of gravity and increased stability.
