Phase 2 is under way on a $30 million project to add an I-70 underpass that connects north and south frontage roads in the town of Vail, Colo. Colorado Department of Transportation and the town of Vail are partners in the connector project located between the main Vail and West Vail interchanges on I-70. Vail will front $8.73 million of the project cost and Colorado Department of Transportation will pay the remainder through Responsible Acceleration of Maintenance Projects funds. The project does not add additional I-70 exits or interchanges into the town of Vail. Phase 2 kicked off after the Fourth of July holiday. It includes lowering and constructing the frontage roads. The underpass is being built out of necessity. Population growth and tourism in and around Vail have led to increased congestion on the roads see UNDERPASS page 44

The United States has the largest network of energy pipelines in the world, with more than 2.5 million mi. (4 million km) of pipe, according to Pipeline101.com. They can be designed for everything from natural gas, gasoline, home heating oil and crude oil. The use of pipe for oil transportation reportedly began soon after the first commercial oil well was drilled by “Colonel” Edwin Drake in Titusville, Pa., in 1859. Of course, many changes and improvements have been made since that time, and the latest technology is used today to build and operate the pipelines. These days, many of the projects are met with opposition from various groups, and sometimes lawsuits are filed and construction is slowed or even halted. CEG compiled a brief summary of some of the main pipeline projects currently under construction, proposed and on hold across the country.

Under Construction Ohio Valley Connector The proposed Ohio Valley Connector (OVC) project includes approximately 36.2 mi. (58 km) of new 30-in. (76 cm) diameter natural gas pipeline from Wetzel County, W.Va., to Monroe County, Ohio, as well as the installation of a new compressor station in Monroe County, the installation of approximately 0.2-mi. (.3 km) of 20-in. (51 cm) diameter pipeline in Monroe County, the installation of a new compressor station in Wetzel County, and the construction of approximately 0.6-mi. (.96 km) of 16-in. (40 cm) diameter pipe in Wetzel County. The OVC will be operated by Equitrans LP, based in Pittsburgh, Pa. The estimated cost is reportedly $416 million. According to the website, this pipeline is projected to be in service in 2016. For more information, visit www.ohiovalleyconnector.com. see PIPELINE page 32
