Single Interconnected Ecosystem Physical, Digital Infrastructure Overlap Muddies Concept of Lone Assets, Individual Issues
The waters that distinguish physical and digital infrastructure these days are becoming murky for governments investing in the bones of their boundaries. Survey results show that transportation, power, water, communications, public facilities and the built environment are losing their distinct separateness. The convergence of all of these individual systems is reshaping the whole of infrastructure planning.

Yellowhouse Demo Day Features Latest From John Deere
(L-R): Aaron Quijano, John Deere excavator product consultant; Ken Hively, John Deere compact construction representative; and Drew Staudt, John Deere field representative, attend Yellowhouse Machinery’s P-Tier Demo Day in Tulsa, Okla.
Y
ellowhouse Machinery brought contractors together in the Tulsa, Okla., area on Sept. 10, 2026, for a hands-on demonstration of John Deere’s latest P-Tier excavators, giving attendees an opportunity to operate the machines and explore new technology in working conditions. The event featured the John Deere 210, 230 and 260 P-Tier excavators — three models that are now being delivered to Yellowhouse Machinery locations. Jay Muniz, excavator specialist of Yellowhouse Machinery, walked attendees through the machines and demonstrated features including 2D and 3D grade control, virtual fencing, damage avoidance and SmartWeigh. One of the most noticeable changes is inside the redesigned cab, which provides additional space and features the new 12.8-in. G5+ touchscreen. Operators also can independently adjust the joystick armrests and select different performance settings based on the application. Much of the demonstration focused on technology designed to simplify grading and give operators greater control from inside the cab. Yellowhouse demonstrated the excavators’ 2D grade control by establishing a reference point with the bucket and programming a desired elevation into the machine. Once the reference was established, the excavator automatically coordinated movement of the boom, arm and bucket to maintain the selected grade as the operator pulled the joystick. “You could have a brand-new operator sit in one of these machines, and they can set up a 2D slope,” Muniz said. An operator digging a trench, for example, can establish the existing ground elevation and enter the desired depth and slope. The system then assists the operator in maintaining that grade throughout the excavation. For contractors working from a complete site model, 3D grade control allows a digital model of the project to be loaded into the excavator. Operators can then view planned elevations and job site information from the monitor. “As you’re moving around the job site, you know exactly what elevation that you’re on and what that site is supposed to look like,” Muniz said.
The John Deere 260 P-Tier excavator was one of three new excavator models on site.
(L-R): JEI’s RJ Morton, Matt Mosteller and Tyler Morton get a closer look at the John Deere 230 P-Tier excavator.
John Deere’s new 12.8-in. G5+ touchscreen puts grade control, machine settings and other technology at the operator’s fingertips.
Yellowhouse also demonstrated virtual fencing, which allows operators to establish limits for the excavator’s ceiling, reach, floor and swing. Muniz used working around power lines as an example. An operator can position the boom at the maximum desired height and establish that point as the virtual ceiling. The machine will then slow and stop the boom as it approaches the established limit. Similar boundaries can be used when working beside a
roadway or structure or when an operator needs to avoid digging below a predetermined depth. Damage avoidance provides additional protection by allowing limits to be established based on the attachment being used. The system can help prevent a bucket, hammer or other attachment from contacting the cab or boom. SmartWeigh also was demonstrated during the event, allowing operators to calculate the weight of material in the bucket and track material being loaded into trucks. Operators can select different materials and trucks within the system. As the excavator moves through the loading cycle, it calculates the bucket weight and adds it to the selected truck’s running total. For contractors involved in aggregate, excavation and site work, the system provides a way to monitor quantities and material movement from the excavator. The hands-on format allowed contractors to operate the machines and ask questions based on situations they encounter in the field. During one demonstration, a contractor involved in mass excavation and underground utility work asked how the 2D system maintains grade after an excavator is repositioned on uneven ground. Yellowhouse representatives demonstrated how the operator can establish a new reference after moving the machine and how a rotating laser can be used to automatically establish another reference. The machines can be configured with different levels of technology depending on the contractor’s needs, with additional capabilities including 3D grade control and expanded camera visibility. “Everybody’s different,” Muniz said. “Everybody’s going to have a different application that they’re using it for.” The demo day gave contractors an opportunity to move beyond specifications and experience the technology from the operator’s seat, while discussing how the features could be applied to their own jobs. Condit Excavation Grows Base in Competitive DFW KSM Technology Solutions Expert Eddie Garcia calibrates a Komatsu Smart Construction Base and Rover solution before Condit Excavation uses its Komatsu intelligent machine control (IMC) dozer.
In the fast-moving Dallas-Fort Worth construction market, opportunity favors those willing to move dirt quickly and accurately. Chris Condit saw that opening and built Condit Excavation LLC to fill it. Condit launched the Dallas-based company about a year ago after years in multifamily construction and development. He worked up from an assistant superintendent to an assistant project manager before shifting into site development, which is the direction Condit is taking Condit Excavation. The company handles pad preparation, mass clearing and mass grading across North Texas, mainly focusing on the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. “I’ve brought on a really good team and leaned on strong partners to get moving,” Condit said. “We stick to dirt. Utilities and paving are handled by trusted partners. That focus lets us do one thing — and do it well.” Condit began in East Texas completing residential pad preps and lot benching. As word spread, he expanded into commercial and multifamily work, which now makes up approximately 90 percent of Condit Excavation’s projects. Crews tackle jobs ranging from 1-acre retail sites to 20-acre multifamily developments. Saving With the Latest Technology By combining a lean operational structure with advanced machine control, Condit Excavation is positioning itself as a nimble, tech-forward contractor in the competitive North Texas earthmoving market, proving that even a young company can leverage digital tools to compete at a higher level. Condit Excavation’s fleet centers on a Komatsu D51PXi-24 intelligent machine control (IMC) dozer. Equipped with factory-integrated GPS machine control, it drives production on grading projects. Crews use a Komatsu Smart Construction Base and Rover system to establish site control, allowing operators to cut and fill to exact elevations without constant grade checking. Unlike traditional setups that require grade stakes and frequent survey verification, the integrated system gives

finished files are formatted for the integrated Topcon system, but Kirby-Smith supports multiple platforms, including Trimble and Leica.” Garcia and other KSM technology team members work with contractors to tie the digital model to real-world coordinates through localization. Using known control points on the site, they set up the base station and calibrate the rover and data collector to ensure the machine’s GPS signals align precisely with the project’s layout. “What that does is it ties your jobsite together,” Garcia said. “We’ll help with localization, help you set up your base station, do training with your rover and data collector, and help set up the machine, trying to make it as easy as possible for you. Our goal is to train contractors to do it themselves and support where needed.”
Chris Condit, owner of Condit Excavation
operators real-time elevation feedback directly in the cab. “We can see exactly where we are in relation to finish grade in real time right on the dozer’s screen,” Condit said. “It makes the whole operation more efficient and reduces our costs because we have less labor and there’s no overcutting, so no wasted effort or need for replacement fill. The accuracy is spot-on and allows us to get to grade faster and take on more jobs.” Eddie Garcia, technology solutions expert with KirbySmith Machinery Inc. (KSM), said that successful GPS machine control implementation starts long before the machine ever tracks onto the jobsite. “We’ll come out and help you set up your base station, especially anytime you’re using GPS machine control,” Garcia said. “We initially consult with you about what you’re trying to accomplish and tailor technology solutions to fit your needs. There are many ways we can help, including helping with the creation of jobsite models. In Chris’ case,
Confidence for Bigger Work Garcia emphasized that adopting GPS technology isn’t reserved for large, long-established contractors, and Condit Excavation is a prime example of how it can benefit contractors of any size. “You don’t have to be a big company to use technology,” Garcia said. “Chris is a smaller company — first dozer, first GPS system. Whether you’re a one-man show or have a hundred people, you get the same support from KirbySmith.” Condit was introduced to the technology through KSM Territory Manager Matt Probey and later attended a Demo Days event, where he operated a Komatsu IMC dozer firsthand. Garcia and the KSM technology team provided initial setup and operator training when the machine was delivered and continue to support Condit Excavation nearly a year later. “When we call, they answer,” Condit said. “They understand how to put us in the right machines and use the technology to our advantage. That gives us confidence to take on bigger work.” * The opinions expressed here are based on the customer’s specific experience. Results may vary. (All photos courtesy of Kirby Smith Machinery.)

WW Builders Inc. Adds Tadano PM Knuckle Boom Crane
The Tadano PM 38525 SP + J813.20
Based in Duncan, Okla., WW Builders Inc. has been a stalwart construction services firm for more than 30 years, offering general building, earthworks, concrete, plumbing and roofing. And the company has added a new crane that will help with many of their construction applications — a Tadano PM 38525 SP + J813.20 (38.5 ton-meter knuckle boom crane and jib). WW Builders Inc. worked with Tadano distributor BTE Body Co. Inc. to find a solution for lifting items at distance and getting materials moved on and off job sites. “Everyone knows the quality of Tadano machines, and this new knuckle boom and truck setup will be a great fit for our project work throughout the region,” said Scott Fowler, a WW Builders project executive. “We loved the functionality and controls of the crane, the horizontal and vertical reach, the activations on the boom Tadano photo for tools and the Mack chassis. Plus, the service from both BTE Body and
Tadano has already been excellent.” WW Builders had never owned a knuckle boom crane but is excited for the potential to be a problem solver on several building applications. The crane will begin its work in Arkansas, performing materials handling on an important Air Force base project. “Our customers expect reliability, capability and support after the sale,” said Jeremy Rendon, regional equipment salesman at BTE Body. “Tadano’s expanding parts and service infrastructure, combined with the strength of the PM product line, gives us confidence that we are putting our name behind equipment that will perform in the field. We are very excited for the wonderful fit with this crane and WW Builders Inc.” The PM 38.5 SP Series belongs to the Gold line of knuckle boom cranes, designed to provide outstanding lifting capacity while maintaining compact dimensions and relatively low weight for its
class. Built with a robust rack-andpinion slewing system, it guarantees durability and dependable operation even under heavy-duty use. Available with up to eight hydraulic extensions, the PM 38.5 SP achieves significant outreach in standard configurations. For greater versatility, jib versions with up to five extensions and negative angles of 20 degrees are available, further expanding both horizontal and vertical working range. “This crane represents more than equipment — it represents alignment and strong partnership,” said Tony Hampton, director of Tadano’s sales PM group. “WW Builders Inc. is a trusted construction name in their region, and the 38.5 SP crane and jib will be great for their array of services. And BTE Body is known for their service and aligning clients with elite equipment. Tadano is very excited to partner with both companies to help everyone achieve their goals.”

complexity of the Cooper Landing Bypass. “Having the opportunity to serve as both the design manager and now the construction manager has been especially rewarding because I’ve been able to see the project evolve from design concepts and environmental commitments into something that is actually being built in the field.” The bridge is a critical part of the Cooper Landing bypass, which will eventually reroute 10 mi. of the Sterling Highway to improve safety and traffic flow through the area. Among its superlatives, the bridge will be: • the highest crossing in the state at 285 ft.; Hurricane Gulch is about 250 ft.; • longest single-span bridge in the state since 1982; and • longest erected and launched bridge in the state. Crews with contractor Quality Asphalt and Paving and Traylor Bros. Inc. Joint Venture (QAP-Traylor JV) launched the bridge across the canyon in June. The steel girders were assembled on one side of the canyon and pushed across to the other side.

SAKAI Marks 50 Years in North America, 25 Years in Georgia Katherine Petrik
S
CEG SENIOR EDITOR
AKAI’s roots go back more than a century. Founded in Japan in 1918 to manufacture and repair diesel locomotives, the company gradually transitioned into construction equipment in 1929, developing the heavy and light compaction equipment for which it is known today. SAKAI equipment is now distributed worldwide. That history includes 50 years in North America and 25 years of manufacturing in Adairsville, Ga., milestones the company is celebrating in 2026. The anniversaries mark the evolution of a Japanese compaction equipment manufacturer from a small North American sales and service operation into a company with manufacturing, parts, sales and dealer support based in the United States. SAKAI America Inc. was established April 8, 1976, as a wholly
owned subsidiary in Wilmington, Del. Although its initial purpose was sales and service, company leaders were already considering establishing a U.S. manufacturing operation as the business grew. Its first North American dealer, Clark Machinery Company of Arkansas, signed on in 1977 and remains a SAKAI dealer today. The company initially shipped SV100, R-II, SV40 and TS7409 machines to the United States as product samples. Strong customer interest quickly resulted in additional machines being sent to North America. One early success was the ER160, SAKAI’s first milling machine exported to the United States. The machine was put to work on nine construction sites in Washington, D.C., completing approximately 70,000 sq. ft. of paving and milling work. The project generated orders for approximately 10 additional milling machines. see SAKAI page 25

The first machine completed at the facility was an SV510D smooth-drum soil compactor, which was sold to an Adairsville contractor in 2001 and remains in operation. (L-R) are Dave Brown, sales manager of SAKAI America Inc.; Steve Fox, president of Fox Brindle; Seigo Harada, president of SAKAI America Inc.; Randall Patterson, foreman of Fox Brindle; and Yasuyuki Kanno, president of SAKAI America Manufacturing Inc.
The company was founded in 1918 by Kinnosuke Sakai.

The ER160 also demonstrated that American contractors needed equipment capable of handling the size and pace of North American projects. Customer feedback that the machine was underpowered for some U.S. applications helped lead to development of the larger ER300, ER400 and ER500 milling machines.
Yasunori Azumi, president of SAKAI America, said that the most important part of the day is to thank the employees. “This anniversary event is not simply about celebrating years in business. It’s about recognizing the people whose dedication has made SAKAI America what it is today.”
Developing North American Market SAKAI’s equipment development continued to evolve as paving practices changed. A major shift came around 2000 with the growing use of Superpave asphalt mixes in the United States. According to Ichiro Sakai, president of SAKAI Heavy Industries, who spoke with Construction Equipment Guide during the anniversary celebration, the new mixes were designed to extend pavement life but created a difficult compaction window. “As the asphalt cooled, the mix became unstable within a certain temperature range, requiring contractors to

compact it quickly.” Sakai said the challenge was to increase roller speed while maintaining proper impact spacing. The solution was to increase the frequency of vibration. SAKAI responded with equipment designed specifically for the North American market. The SW800, SW850 and SW900 series featured the first 4,000 vpm high-frequency vibration systems intended to allow rollers to work at highSAKAI photo er speeds while maintaining proper In 1929, the first road rollers were introduced. impact spacing. The machines were introduced at ConExpo-Con/AGG 1999 in Las Vegas. The North American market also led to development of equipment for specialized applications. The SV510DVC-1 and CV550 series, for example, were designed for steep-slope work such as dam faces and landfill containment applications. Their rubber-tracked rear propulsion systems were designed to maintain traction on steep embankments. see SAKAI page 30
Southeast dealers turned out to join their SAKAI representatives and to enjoy the festivities of the day, (L-R) including Jesse Beasley, National Equipment Dealers (NED); Grayson Taylor and Ed Tabor of Taylor Construction Equipment; Nick Zessack, SAKAI America; and Zach Kavanaugh, NED.
Matthew Gambill (L), Georgia state representative of District 15 and co-chair of the Georgia-Japan Caucus, presented Gov. Brian Kemp’s commendation plaque to Ichiro Sakai, president of SAKAI Heavy Industries.
Dealers and guests had an up-close view of final stages of building asphalt rollers during a guided tour of the assembly line.
The newest SAKAI dealer made it all the way from the West Coast for the event. Ichiro Sakai Discusses Century-Plus of Company History SAKAI from page 25
Manufacturing in Georgia SAKAI’s commitment to North America reached another level with the establishment of SAKAI America Manufacturing Inc. in Adairsville. The company established the facility in January 2000, selecting the Georgia location because of its proximity to suppliers, state incentives and transportation infrastructure. The plant became operational in April 2001, initially assembling SV510 and SV400 series vibratory single-drum soil compactors. The first machine completed at the facility was an SV510D smooth-drum soil compactor, which was sold to an Adairsville contractor and remains in operation, according to the company. SAKAI America subsequently moved its headquarters from Delaware into the Georgia facility, bringing manufacturing, sales, parts distribution and dealer support together at one location. The first asphalt roller built in Adairsville was a 79-in. SW800 double-drum roller, produced beginning in 2004. In 2006, the plant produced its 1,000th machine, an SV505D smooth-drum soil compactor. By 2019, production had reached 2,000 machines with an SV540D smooth-drum soil compactor. Today, more than half of SAKAI rollers sold in the United States and Canada are manufactured in North America. Sakai said maintaining domestic manufacturing demonstrates the company’s long-term commitment to its customers.
After the event concluded, Ichiro Sakai (L), president of SAKAI Heavy Industries, and his son-in-law, Chris Takara, executive officer and general manager of the corporate strategy office of SAKAI Heavy Industries, sat down with Construction Equipment Guide and took a moment to reflect before visiting supplier factories in the North Georgia area.
Manufacturing staffers and dignitaries packed into the assembly area for lunch and for speakers to acknowledge the excellence of manufacturing at this facility.
The beginning stages of assembly receive a lot of attention as the dealers wanted to see the “core” of how these machines are built.
“Initially, the thinking behind having a foothold and having a factory here is to show our customers, hey, we’re here for the long haul,” Sakai said. “We’re not just here to sell you rollers. We’re committed to this.” SAKAI currently has manufacturing operations in Japan, Indonesia, China and the United States. Sakai said the company could consider expanding the Adairsville facility but currently is not considering a second North American manufacturing location.
Technology, Future While SAKAI continues to emphasize reliability, simplicity and durability, the company also is developing technology for increasingly automated equipment. Sakai said automation and electrification do not have to change the basic philosophy behind SAKAI machines. see SAKAI page 36

Technology Doesn’t Change SAKAI’s Basic Philosophy SAKAI from page 30
“My design philosophy is still simple and durable,” Sakai said. “The machine itself won’t change.” He said autonomous and electric capabilities can be added without changing the fundamental machine design. “We have autonomous rollers,” Sakai said. “It’s called ARMS.” ARMS (Automatic, Remote, Manual, representing the three modes of operation) autonomous roller technology is operating in Japan. The system is being used for dam construction and other large-scale soil compaction applications where there are relatively few people around the machines. Sakai said the transition to autonomous operation on highway projects will take longer, with development progressing from machine assistance to systems capable of coordinating multiple rollers and eventually fully autonomous operation. Safety technology also is an area of development. SAKAI’s Guardman system uses radar or 3D LiDAR to detect people, equipment and other objects and can automatically stop a roller in an emergency. Sakai said he expects technology such as Guardman eventually to become standard across the equipment industry, much as advanced safety systems have become common in SAKAI photo automobiles. The technology currently has greater acceptance in Japan, where Sakai said approximately 30 to 40 percent of new SAKAI machines sold there are equipped with Guardman. The percentage is less than 10 percent in North America. Sakai said differences in how paving projects are organized in Japan and the United States may contribute to the different approach to job-site safety. In Japan, several companies may come together on a paving project and meet for the first time on the job site. In the United States, a single contractor more commonly has its own paving crew and can establish safety procedures before the work begins. Labor shortages are another issue influencing equipment development. “In Japan and America, it’s very similar,” Sakai said. “Number one, there’s not enough people.” He said the shortage is a worldwide construction industry issue, although it may be
more severe in Japan. The labor shortage, he said, will increase the need for technology that allows contractors to improve productivity. SAKAI encounters significant differences in road-building practices around the world. “Road building is a culture,” Sakai said, explaining that Japan, North America and Europe approach paving differently. One example is paving speed. Sakai said pavers in the United States operate approximately three times faster than those in Japan, while European paving operations are approximately twice as fast as those in Japan. Despite the differences, Sakai said he does not see a need for the American approach to change. He explained that U.S. paving operations generally separate the responsibilities of the paver and roller: The paver places the asphalt while the roller performs the compaction. In Japan, the paver travels more slowly and performs more of the initial compaction before the roller completes the process. Sakai said the American approach is logical and efficient because each machine has a specific responsibility. For SAKAI, the 50year North American anniversary and 25 years of manufacturing in Georgia also represent a family history. “The second generation of the Sakai family established the company’s first regional sales office in North America 50 years ago. The third generation was involved in finding and purchasing the land for the Adairsville factory and establishing the manufacturing operation. Now the fourth generation is involved in the company.” Looking back at the progression from the original North American sales operation to a full manufacturing facility, Sakai described the milestone as emotional and humbling. “It’s been a journey,” Sakai said, reflecting on the step-by-step development of the North American operation. The next chapter will continue that progression, with SAKAI building on its manufacturing base in Georgia while developing equipment around the changing needs of contractors. ALASKA from page 22
Launching is a construction method where pre-built parts of the bridge, such as the 13-ft.-tall girders on this project, are incrementally pushed across piers rather than lifted into place. “This will likely be the longest launched bridge in North America,” according to Alaska DOT&PF. Since the launching, construction crews have been removing the temporary launching equipment, jacking the bridge down onto its bearing pads, completing final crossframe connections, repairing and completing metallization on portions of the steel and advancing the backwalls and wingwalls. “The next major piece of work is pouring the bridge deck in summer 2027,” Tymick said. When complete, the Juneau Creek Bridge will stand approximately 250 ft. tall, stretch 928 ft. long and be 63.5 ft. wide. Construction will call for 6.75 million lbs. of structural steel, 1.12 million lbs. of reinforcing steel, 16.7 million lbs. of concrete, and more than 35,000 bolts holding it all together. “A significant amount of temporary equipment and temporary works had to be designed specifically for the bridge launch,” Tymick said. “The bridge itself was designed not only for the loads it will experience throughout its service life, but also for some very unusual temporary loading conditions that occurred while it was being launched across the canyon. “The contractor developed specialized launching equipment and temporary works to support, guide, jack and control the bridge during the launch. That coordination between the contractor and our Bridge Design Section was a major part of the design process.” Work on the bypass project began in about 2019, though studies on updating the Sterling Highway have been on the books since the 1980s. The highway was built in the 1940s and ‘50s as a gravel road and not designed for the traffic it carries today, Alaska DOT&PF said. “It had become increasingly congested, especially during the summer months, creating safety issues for travelers,” the agency said. see ALASKA page 61

DEVELON ADTs Include Enhanced Cab, New Auto-Hold Brake Features Building on the performance of its predecessors, the new DEVELON DA30-7 and DA45-7 articulated dump trucks (ADTs) feature a newly redesigned cabin designed to enhance operator productivity, comfort and safety through advanced automation and intuitive technology. “The most significant update from the previous -5 models to the new DA30-7 and DA45-7 is a completely reimagined interior layout,” said Jay Patel, product manager of DEVELON. “The truck’s interior transitioned from a traditional heavy-equipment feel to a high-end, automotive-inspired environment.”
New Auto-Hold Brake Function DEVELON has simplified ADT operation on job sites with the new Auto-Hold brake function for hill assist. This new feature provides several key benefits: • Stationary security: When loading or unloading the ADT, pressing the Auto-Hold button engages the truck’s brakes and puts it into neutral automatically. • Intuitive reengagement: When the operator is ready to move the machine, simply engaging the drive and accelerating will automatically release the hold brake. • Uphill/downhill assistance: During uphill situations, the Auto-Hold brake system removes the need for two-foot operation. The brake releases automatically once the driveline torque is sufficient to create forward motion. DEVELON also updated the parking brake switch in the new DA30-7 and DA45-7. The updated control more closely resembles an automotive-style parking brake. Operators simply pull the lever up to activate the truck’s parking brake. When operators are ready to move the truck, they press down the lever to deactivate it. Intuitive 12-In. Display The new DA30-7 and DA457 ADT comes standard with a 12-in. touch screen display monitor. This upgraded interface provides operators with a

critical machine data, status updates and settings. Positioned at eye level, the monitor allows operators to view machine data, gradients and camera feeds without looking down or away from the area in front of them. Real-time monitoring includes the following: • Active payload measuring system: Displays the weight of each individual load on-screen to help optimize productivity and prevent overloading. • Gradient meter: Monitors the machine’s incline and pitch in real time to enhance safety and prevent tipping. • Operational gauges: Show travel speed, engine rpm, and fuel and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) levels and consumption rates. • Temperature readings: Monitor engine and hydraulic oil temperature to ensure that the machine is operating within safe limits. Core Performance, Stability According to the company, while the ADT operator environment
overhaul, the trucks maintain the superior mechanical design that DEVELON ADTs are known for, including: • Unique driveline: A frontmounted turning ring ensures equal weight distribution to the front axle even during maximum steer articulation. • Superior traction: The freeswinging rear tandem bogie provides permanent 6-wheel ground contact and power distribution on difficult terrain. • Self-leveling suspension: The hydro-gas front suspension system continues to provide superior shock absorption and a smoother ride. DEVELON ADTs come standard with MY DEVELON fleet management (telematics). Owners can use a smartphone app or web browser to remotely monitor their ADTs for fuel usage, machine health, operator productivity and more. Owners can use the telematics tool to monitor an ADT’s active payload meter data to verify that trucks are consistently filled to capacity without being overloaded, which protects the machine from excessive wear. Komatsu Commissions Its 1,000th Ultra-Class Autonomous Haul Truck
Komatsu reached a historic milestone in autonomous mining, commissioning its 1,000th autonomous ultra-class haul truck equipped with the company’s FrontRunner Autonomous Haulage System. The milestone reinforces Komatsu’s position as the pioneer in autonomous haulage, having been first to market with a commercial autonomous mining solution in 2008 and now the first OEM to commission 1,000 autonomous ultraclass trucks worldwide. The 1,000th commissioned autonomous haul truck is a Komatsu 930E-5AT, an ultra-class electric drive truck (EDT) with a 290-metric-ton payload, deployed at Barrick’s Nevada Gold Mines operation in the United States, marking a significant milestone that extends Komatsu’s autonomous haulage into gold mining with a key strategic partner. The 930E-5AT is part of Komatsu’s electric drive haul truck lineup that underpins FrontRunner deployments around the world. The 930E ultraclass EDT stands as the most widely deployed model, representing more than 500 autonomous trucks across customer sites today. Beyond haulage, Komatsu continues to expand automation across mine-site operations, including autonomous water trucks to help further improve safety, reduce manual equipment interactions and support road maintenance. Additional autonomous and remotely operated equipment within Komatsu’s unified control and fleet management framework extends automation beyond individual machines to deliver minewide performance gains at the system level. Since its commercial introduction, Komatsu customers using FrontRunner have collectively moved more than 11.5 billion metric tons of material, demonstrating the scale, reliability and productivity of autonomous haulage across some of the world’s most demanding mining environments. Deployed at mine sites across North America, South America, Australia and Europe, FrontRunner’s global footprint and support infrastructure spans diverse commodities and operating conditions. Beyond operational performance, FrontRunner generated approximately $2.4 billion in social impact globally in 2024 based on impact accounting methodologies developed jointly by

Capitals Coalition and Value Balancing Alliance, analyzed by ABeam Consulting Ltd., and reported in the Komatsu Report 2025. This milestone builds on Komatsu’s recent achievement of autonomously operating a power agnostic electric drive truck while connected to a dynamic trolley line, an industry first that demonstrated the integration of autonomous haulage with advanced electrification technologies. Together, these accomplishments underscore Komatsu’s ability to deliver solutions that enhance productivity while supporting customers’ decarbonization and sustainability objectives. “Commissioning our 1,000th autonomous haul truck is a defining moment for Komatsu and for the mining industry,” said Peter Salditt, president, mining business division and CEO, Komatsu Mining Corporation. “It reflects nearly two decades of innovation, collaboration with our customers and a relentless focus on creating real operational value. We are incredibly proud of this milestone, and even more excited about what lies ahead as we continue to advance autonomous, electrified and software-defined solutions that help our customers operate more safely, productively and sustainably.” Customers continue to play a central role in shaping the evolution of autonomous haulage, with FrontRunner delivering measurable benefits in asset use and safety while enabling new pathways for energy efficiency and
emissions reduction. Partnerships such as Komatsu’s work with Barrick at Nevada Gold Mines demonstrate how autonomy is creating shared value while expanding into new commodities, regions and operating environments. “FrontRunner has elevated both the quality of work for our people and the way we meet production goals at our Nevada operations,” said Mark Hill, president and CEO of Barrick. “By transitioning operators away from haulage activities and enabling more predictable operations, autonomy supports safer, more skilled roles while helping us use energy more efficiently and reduce our environmental footprint. Together with Komatsu, we see a significant opportunity to advance productivity further while benefiting our workforce and community.” Looking forward, Komatsu is accelerating the next generation of autonomous mining equipment through the advancement of a software-defined vehicle strategy. By developing a unified vehicle and autonomy platform, Komatsu is laying the foundation for mining machines that continuously evolve, adapt to site-specific conditions and unlock new levels of productivity and sustainability over the life of the asset, according to Komatsu. Komatsu remains focused on creating value for customers by delivering solutions that help meet rising demands for essential minerals and safer operations. Hyundai Expands Next-Generation Operator Experience HD Construction Equipment Hyundai North America announced the availability of updated HA30 and HA45 articulated dump trucks featuring a redesigned operator environment, enhanced serviceability and a common digital interface that aligns with Hyundai’s latest generation of heavy equipment. As construction fleets continue adopting connected equipment and standardized controls, Hyundai has extended the same intuitive interface introduced on its newest HX excavators to its articulated dump truck lineup. The result is a familiar operating experience regardless of machine type, allowing operators to move between machines with greater confidence while reducing setup and training time. The redesigned cab combines productivity with comfort. Larger front and side windows improve visibility around the machine, while a heated air-suspension seat, automatic climate control, and ergonomic positioning of key interfaces and controls make long shifts more comfortable. A new 12.5-in., eye-level touchscreen monitor serves as the machine’s central command center. The display provides quick access to payload information, performance data, diagnostics, camera views and machine settings. A redesigned color-coded keypad further simplifies machine operation. “We’re working to make every Hyundai machine feel familiar to operate,” said Joe Hodges, product manager, HD Construction Equipment Hyundai North America. “Whether an operator moves from an excavator into an articulated dump truck or vice versa, they’ll find the same interface design, reducing their learning curve while helping owners
maximize productivity across their fleet.” Hodges said Hyundai plans to apply this hardware and software to other new heavy equipment models moving forward. New Hyundai ADTs also include enhanced productivity, safety and serviceability A new “auto squat” feature lowers the truck’s front end for easy entry and exit. The updated ADTs also introduce an automatic brake-hold system for smoother loading cycles and include integrated payload weighing and gradient monitoring to help improve productivity while supporting safe operation. Routine maintenance was simplified through ground-level service access, grouped maintenance points, easier access to filters and fluid fill locations and a tilting cab with selfpositioning safety locks that provides convenient access to the engine compartment. Built for earthmoving, quarry, mining and infrastructure applications, the HA45 and HA30 continue to deliver outstanding traction, maneuverability and stability while pairing with Hyundai excavators and wheel loaders on highproduction job sites. The HA45 features a 45-ton payload and a 489-nethorsepower Scania engine, while the HA30 offers a 30-ton payload with a 367-net-horsepower Scania engine. Both models incorporate ZF 8-speed automatic transmissions engineered for demanding production environments. Every new Hyundai articulated dump truck comes with five years of complimentary Hyundai Connect telematics, giving owners remote access to fleet performance, diagnostics, maintenance information and machine location. Hyundai
backs both models with a standard 3-year/3,000-hour fullmachine warranty and a 5-year/10,000-hour structural warranty, with Hyundai Extend coverage also available. (All photos courtesy of HD Construction Equipment Hyundai North America.)
The keypad in the Hyundai HA45 and HA30 ADTs is now color coded, making it easier to see and use during operation.

Data-Driven Technology Transforms How Modern Job Sites Work With Accuracy Technologies like machine control, which help accurately position earthwork machinery using 3D design models and GPS systems, are not just common on the job site, they are critical components of it. Coupled with advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and 3D modeling tools such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), the modern job site is now almost entirely driven by data — or at least it should be, according to Leica. Data makes it easier to keep track of what’s happening on site. It’s simple to share with everyone involved, so people can stay up to date and adjust when things change. Machine Control Machine control technology evolved with the introduction of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) satellites and robotic total stations. Communicating directly with machine hydraulics to automate
blade and bucket movements enables operators to achieve precise, planned designs. Design models can be loaded directly into machine control systems, eliminating an unnecessary middle step and a possible point of failure. Consistent, specification-level performance has fueled adoption, driving efficiency gains across both personnel and assets, according to Leica. Safety Solution The biggest advantage of machine control and other jobsite technologies is helping keep people safe on the job. For example, 3D machine control and virtual wall solutions let companies mark restricted areas. Machines are automatically slowed or stopped to prevent entry, protecting vulnerable areas where workers may be, such as walkways, underground utilities or structures. Collision-avoidance solutions
provide an extra layer of safety by warning operators about other nearby machines and vehicles, helping to prevent mishaps. Additionally, personal alert systems notify the wearer that they’ve entered a hazard zone and alerts the operator of nearby machinery. Road Ahead As adoption of machine control increases, projects are expected to become more efficient, adhere more closely to specifications and remain on budget, according to Leica. This widespread adoption is driving greater accuracy and confidence in project delivery, added the company. What began as a novelty has become a necessity, and machine control’s evolution continues, even as it is now a standard across all machines. By helping crews work smarter, these tools could address the skilledworker shortage and ensure jobs are completed safely, on time and on budget, concluded Leica.

Physical, Digital Infrastructure Distinction Is Fading ECOSYSTEM from page 1
Business management consulting firm Deloitte surveyed government institutions in 21 countries recently and found a definite trend in this reshaping. Anant Dinamani, Mahesh Kelkar, Thomas Schlaak and Tiffany Fishman found from the survey that “infrastructure is becoming a system of systems.” Their Deloitte Center for Government Insights report found that the distinction between physical and digital infrastructure is quickly disappearing. The individual infrastructure systems are a challenge to sustain anymore because they are all so interconnected and dependent on one another. “Physical assets depend on digital platforms, sensors, connectivity, data and operational technologies to function,” the team wrote. They found that at the same time digital infrastructure depends on reliable power, communications networks and other physical infrastructure to operate. “As these interdependencies deepen, decisions made within one infrastructure system affect capacity, performance, and risk across others,” they wrote. The shift in connection is being recognized by governments. Survey respondents stressed the need to better understand these dependencies. Respondents see the critical need to address the overlaps across infrastructure assets, sectors and geographic locations, noted the Deloitte team. The 2026 Future of Infrastructure survey involved 985 infrastructure executives from government, private sector and not-forprofits in 21 countries. The goal was to understand how leaders approach infrastructure investment, delivery, resilience, financing and AI, according to the Deloitte report on the findings. The report identifies shifts shaping the future of infrastructure, according to the team of analysts. “They show how infrastructure is evolving from individual assets to interconnected systems and what this means for governments and infrastructure leaders.” Ripple Effect Tied to Interconnectivity The Deloitte team found that this interconnectivity requires of governments greater visibility into how decisions for one system affect outcomes across others. “That visibility enables more coordinated planning, investment and operations across organizational and sector boundaries,” they wrote. Ultimately, it requires governments to plan, govern and operate infrastructure as an

In today’s world of infrastructure investment, construction and maintenance, individual infrastructure systems are dependent on one another.
interconnected system instead of a pool of independent assets. “The digital-energy nexus is one of the clearest examples in the survey of this emerging system-of-systems model,” said the writers. As AI, connected assets and digital services demand power and connectivity, modern energy systems depend on digital controls, analytics and real-time data. Survey results show similar interdependencies are emerging across infrastructure systems. As a result, they are reshaping how governments manage data, technology, assets, institutions and partners as part of a single interconnected ecosystem. Deloitte’s team found that digital capabilities embedded in physical assets are accelerating infrastructure convergence. Respondents expect digital technologies to fundamentally reshape how infrastructure is built, operated and experienced. These capabilities are being embedded by design, although their role differs across infrastructure domains, said the writing team. The survey found: • 69 percent of respondents expect demand for smart, connected and resilient urban infrastructure to significantly impact infrastructure. European respondents foresee the highest at 75 percent. • 66 percent expect greater integration of digital technologies in social and entertainment venues. Latin American respondents, at 82 percent and Asia-Pacific respondents at 80 percent reported the strongest expectations. • 59 percent anticipate adoption of
advanced technologies in infrastructure and transportation operations will have significant impact on infrastructure. North American respondents reported the highest level of anticipated adoption, at 67 percent “Infrastructure systems are not becoming digital in identical ways,” wrote the team. “But their performance now depends on a shared digital foundation, including data, connectivity, controls and analytics.” The writers noted that at the same time that shared digital foundation also is changing how infrastructure is managed. Scheduled inspections and reactive maintenance have given way to real-time intelligence. This data in turn enables infrastructure operators to monitor conditions, optimize performance and respond more quickly to changing circumstances. This shift is being enabled through capabilities such as command-and-control systems and digital twins. “The survey suggests that organizations have moved beyond foundational use cases toward broader operational intelligence capabilities,” the writers said. The goal now, they said, is not simply to monitor individual assets, but to improve the coordination and management of infrastructure systems. As a result, real-time monitoring, performance optimization, energy forecasting and operational coordination are becoming central operational priorities. The Deloitte survey found: • Predictive maintenance remains the most widely implemented AI use case today, at 61 percent. Its projected decline over the
next three years likely reflects the maturity of these applications as organizations shift their focus to newer AI use cases, rather than a decline in interest. • Real-time asset monitoring and performance optimization currently ranks third, at 46 percent. Looking three years ahead, real-time asset monitoring is expected to become the leading operational AI use case, at 45 percent. • Other AI use cases expected to grow over the next three years are those that rely on real-time intelligence and deeper operational insights, including energy demand forecasting, 44 percent; traffic management and mobility optimization, 38 percent; AI-enabled workforce optimization, 38 percent and grid management, 35 percent. The goal is to create infrastructure systems that continuously sense, analyze and respond to changing conditions, according to the writers’ findings. “This shifts the focus from monitoring individual assets to understanding how conditions across connected systems affect service delivery,” they said. Industry trends show infrastructure dependencies are widespread. As Deloitte noted, power disruptions can affect communications and transportation. And transportation systems rely on cloud platforms and digital controls. Water utilities depend on sensors and operational technologies. Digital infrastructure needs reliable power generation, connectivity and energy storage. “Together, these interdependencies are reshaping infrastructure planning and decision-making,” said the writers. “The survey indicates that respondents recognize cross-system interdependencies as a defining characteristic of modern infrastructure planning.” Survey analysis found that respondents recognized a strong need to better understand these dependencies. They also want to better process the interconnectivity of infrastructure assets across sectors and geographic locations. In fact, 45 percent of Deloitte survey respondents identified this point as a “defining characteristic of modern infrastructure planning.” The analysts noted that response was highest among APAC (49 percent) and Latin American (47 percent) participants, although no region fell below 42 percent. “However, these dependencies go beyond technical integration,” said the team. “Connected infrastructure creates value by bringing together data” from across systems. This sweeping data gathering gives leaders a broad view of how decisions in one domain affect others. see ECOSYSTEM page 58

Energy Systems Reliant On Digital Tech to Manage Operations ECOSYSTEM from page 54
“A disruption or policy decision in one domain can reshape demand, capacity, risk and service quality across several others,” the writers said. But these dependencies also cross institutional boundaries, they found in analyzing the survey results. Public infrastructure relies on privatesector capabilities and capital, while private infrastructure depends on utilities, permitting, transport, water and other public resources. And as infrastructure systems become more interconnected, failures that begin in one system can cascade into others. This, in turn, can force infrastructure leaders to shift from asset-level planning to system-level planning to compensate. The survey identified the relationship emerging between digital infrastructure and energy systems as one of the clearest examples of interdependence. Digital services, connected devices and advanced infrastructure technologies are driving significant increases in electricity demand, the Deloitte staffers found. At the same time, expanding energy systems rely more heavily on digital technologies to manage generation, storage,
forecasting and grid operations. “The relationship is reciprocal,” said the team of writers. “Each system depends on the other.” The survey also found: • 69 percent of the respondents expect demand for smart, connected and resilient infrastructure, including the proliferation of connected devices and Internet of Things will have a significant impact on infrastructure. • 64 percent expect that exponential growth in electrification and AI solutions will fuel rapid growth in energy demand. Latin American respondents, at 79 percent, believe it is the defining interdependence of this era. Simultaneous Growth in Connected Resources Viewed together, these demandand supply-side trends highlight the growing interdependence between digital infrastructure and energy systems. The survey points to simultaneous growth in connected infrastructure, AI-related demand, connectivity, alternative energy sources and storage, said Deloitte. “Meeting this demand will require coordinated growth in connectivity, energy capacity and energy storage,” wrote the

staffers. “The challenge is to expand capacity while ensuring supporting infrastructure grows at the same pace as demand.” The biggest demand at present is on expanding and strengthening foundational connectivity infrastructure, the survey found. High-speed, reliable and universal connectivity through multiple technologies was pinpointed by 68 percent of respondents. Those technologies include, fiber-based wired broadband, low earth orbit satellites and 5G. “A corresponding demand can be seen in foundational energy infrastructure, with
a specific focus on alternative sources of energy” at 64 percent. And 64 percent of survey respondents see significant growth in energy storage solutions. APAC respondents expressed the strongest expectations. “Interdependence delivers better outcomes when leaders understand how systems interact, coordinate decisions and align investments,” said the writers. “The same need for coordinated planning extends across transportation, water, communications, public services and the built environment.” CEG

Takeuchi-US Launches Its New Website Purple Wave Auction, for Easier Research, Comparison Options Watkins Construction Tout Partnership Construction owners and operators worldwide can bid on construction equipment in the Watkins Construction Fleet Replacement Auction. This Watkins-specific auction gives the Purple Wave buying community a unique opportunity to take home equipment they can use on their next project for years to come. “Take care of equipment, and it’ll take care of you.” That’s the motto Jerry Watkins has lived by for nearly 54 years running Watkins Construction, a Corsicana, Texas, company that has served the southern United States for almost 70 years, since 1957. Watkins Construction works across a wide range of project types, including heavy civil, pipelines of all sizes, compressor and pump stations, pipeline integrity, maintenance as well as emergency response and repair. Purple Wave said equipment has always been Watkins’ passion, an investment that got him where he is today. The equipment being sold was used within Watkins Construction on past projects and has been well maintained, ready for its next owner to go straight to the job site.
Takeuchi-US launched a completely redesigned website that makes it easier to research and compare machines, configure equipment, connect with a local dealer and access product and support information from virtually any device. The new Takeuchi-US.com is part of a broader, company-wide website initiative and shares a common platform with Takeuchi’s new global corporate website. The shared platform provides a more connected and consistent digital experience across Takeuchi’s worldwide operations while allowing content to be tailored to different audiences and markets. “Our new website reflects the way we’re seeing customers access our information online,” said Stephen Odum, national marketing manager for Takeuchi-US. “Because much of our website traffic now comes from mobile devices, we wanted to provide an online experience that works seamlessly on smartphones and tablets. We also wanted to make
it simpler to research and explore equipment options online, regardless of location.” Before beginning the design process, Takeuchi conducted extensive interviews with customers and other stakeholders to identify and prioritize the website capabilities that would provide the most value. The project also included close collaboration among Takeuchi teams around the world, beginning with inperson meetings at the company’s headquarters in Japan and continuing throughout the development process. “Our website was built with the same commitment to quality, reliability and attention to detail that goes into every Takeuchi machine,” Odum said. “Our goal was simple: create a digital experience that works as hard for our customers as our equipment does.” That research helped place equipment exploration at the center of the new website experience. Users can browse equipment by product category, with redesigned product
pages that make specifications and other important information easy to find. A new machine configurator makes it possible to build a machine with specific features and options, while a comparison tool makes it easier to evaluate specifications across different models. An enhanced Dealer Locator quickly connects visitors with their local Takeuchi dealer. The new site also features simplified navigation and expanded access to brochures, videos and support resources, along with the latest Takeuchi news and information about financing, current offers and promotions. “Whether you’re standing on a job site with a phone in hand or researching your next machine from the office, we want you to be able to quickly find the information you need and confidently explore your options,” Odum said. “The new website helps you find the right machine for your needs and take the next step by connecting with a Takeuchi dealer.”

Project Adds Four Wildlife Undercrossings, Overpass ALASKA from page 38
Challenges include those technically related, but the biggest hurdle stems from the state’s use of an alternative procurement method, “in this case, Construction Manager/ General Contractor (CM/GC), Tymick said. “... consistent funding and continuity are required for that delivery method to work as intended. That is something this project has never had. Without consistent funding and a clear plan to advance successive phases, contractor equipment has at times sat idle or been underutilized, and some equipment has even been mobilized off the project only to later be brought back. “So, the biggest challenge has been delivering a project of this magnitude through years of funding uncertainty while trying to maintain momentum — keeping contractors and their equipment working, progressing design, meeting environmental commitments and keeping future phases ready to advance when funding becomes available.” In addition to the steel girder bridge spanning Juneau Creek Canyon, the bypass project features four wildlife undercrossing structures and the first wildlife overpass of a

Ninety percent of the funding for the project is anticipated to come from the Federal Highway Trust Fund, according to the Alaska DOT&PF, with the state of Alaska supplying the remaining 10 percent. The bridge is expected to be completed in 2028, and the full bypass is expected to open in 2032. CEG (All photos courtesy of the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Facilities.)
