Considered a leader in sustainability amongst major U.S. cities, Portland, Ore., has developed cost-effect methods to recycle haul-back materials — generated from street maintenance operations — and reuse them for daily repair work conducted by the city’s

maintenance department. Portland’s haul-back material recycling program is conducted at its Sunderland Recycling Facility, where 30,000 to 50,000 cu. yds. (22,937 to 38,228 cu m) of concrete and asphalt-laden materials are processed annually, according to the Portland Bureau of Transportation. see EXPANSION page 10

Cat CFO: U.S. Economy Not Far From Liftoff BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) Caterpillar Inc. believes the American economy isn’t far from taking off again but needs a better idea of where government policy is headed in key areas such as taxes, Chief Financial Officer Edward Rapp said May 19. The company forecasts that the U.S. economy will grow by about 3 percent in 2012,

Rapp said before a speech at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. He said growth of 3.5 percent to 4 percent should kick off demand for new heavy machinery like the company’s construction equipment. “There’s a pent-up demand waiting to happen, but it’s going to take more robust growth see ECONOMY page 30

Construction spending inched up for the second straight month in April, 0.4 percent — following downward revisions to the March spending figures — due to increases in private nonresidential and home-improvement spending, the Associated General Contractors of America reported June 1 in an analysis of new Census Bureau data. Association officials noted, however, that the gains were tempered by sluggish homebuilding and declining levels of public investment in construction. “Overall economic conditions seem better than they have been for several years, which normally leads to well-rounded construction growth,” said Ken Simonson, the association’s chief economist. “But these figures may be deceptively positive, masking weakening public sector demand and still-weak demand for residential construction.” Simonson noted that the April results were boosted by a modest half-percent rise in private nonresidential construction and a deceptively large 3.1 percent leap in private residential spending. However, the residential growth was attributable to a 7.6 percent jump in the “improvements” category, a number the Census Bureau frequently revises down in later months, as it did in March. The economist cautioned that the figures from more reliable residential categories — new single- and multi-family construction —declined by 1.0 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively. Simonson noted that private nonresidential spending also was uneven. The largest category, power construction, grew 3.2 percent, and there were increases of 4.7 percent for communication construction and 0.8 percent for private health care construction. But there were decreases of 1.3 percent in commercial construction (retail, warehouse and farm), 1.0 percent in manufacturing consee SPENDING page 10

Road Machinery Expands Sales Group in Phoenix Area Road Machinery in Gilbert, Ariz., has expanded its sales group. “At Road Machinery, we have always known that the customer comes first. And by increasing our sales force, we feel that having more representatives available to interact with customers is well worth the investment,” said Weston, general manager. “With men like Corey Barton, I know our customers are in good hands,” continued Weston. “Road Machinery turned out to be his first job, which gave us the opportunity to train him from the ground up. After covering the southern region of Arizona from Casa Grande to the Mexico border and from California to western New Mexico, we felt he was ready for additional responsibilities. We added Corey to our staff and he now also covers the West Phoenix Valley.” Paul Lull brings experience from companies such as John Deere Ag and Bingham Equipment where he worked his way up to store manager and most recently, the JCB dealership in Phoenix. “With his 30 plus years in the industry, Paul has experienced most of what can be asked of him as far as customer requests and provide for the customers’ needs,” Weston said. Lull’s territory is the entire southeast side

of Phoenix, including Gilbert, Mesa and Tempe. Ken Galas started in the construction industry in the parts department of Case Power & Equipment. His successes in the industry includes selling over 110 million of equipment, the most ever sold by an individual for Case. “I plan on using my talents and contacts to help Road Machinery become the ‘go-to-

dealership’ when area contractors need a new piece of equipment or service on their existing equipment,” Galas stated. His assigned territory is all of Phoenix west of I-17 and north of the 202, which includes Phoenix, Scottsdale and Fountain Hills. “I feel confident that men such as Barton, Lull and Galas will only enhance Road Machinery’s relationships with our existing

Portland, Ore., Recycling Facility Numbers Get Boost From Nonresidential Expands, Improves Operation EXPANSION from page 1

Early this year the facility’s processing capabilities were expanded, as Tualatin, Ore.-based Construction Equipment Company (CEC) streamlined the facility’s product handling/preparation operations by combining the separate processes into one. The streamlining and efficiency upgrade was part of a $500,000 design and build contract that included the design and installation of new equipment and alterations to existing facility equipment. The services conducted by CEC enabled the facility to process a typical year’s worth of materials during the first four months of this year, according to Gary Smith, owner of CEC. The main service involved the reworking of the facility’s yard flow, which included the integration of crushing and scalping processes to eliminate double handling of materials. To achieve this, CEC built and installed a new 133 by 152 ft. (40.5 by

46.3 m) horizontal shaft impact crusher — with a customized 4.3 by 20 ft. (1.3 by 6.1 m) vibrating Grizzly feeder and separate conveyor for scalped

The services conducted by CEC enabled the facility to process a typical year’s worth of materials during the first four months. material — and installed a new, company-built 2.5 by 60 ft. (0.8 by 18.3 m) stacking conveyor, and an Okadabrand processor for initial material prep. CEC also custom designed a feeder system that removes any dirt from the system and takes it directly to an existing 5 by 12 ft. (1.5 by 3.7 m) Screen-It for dirt removal, scalping, and rock

recovery. The rock is then fed back into the crushing circuit. As part of the facility redesign, CEC used and made alterations to the facility’s existing 5 by 16 ft. (1.5 by 4.9 m), three Deck El-Jay finish screen and several conveyors. Asphalt processed at the Sunderland facility is typically over-sized and requires some downsizing to make it usable for the production of rock. The asphalt is mixed with concrete as it is fed into the crushing machine to ensure an end product that meets construction specifications. Concrete chunks brought to the facility are downsized and mixed with asphalt as it is fed through the crushing machine to make 1.5 in. (3.8 cm) minus aggregate. Construction Equipment Company provides portable rock crushing and screening equipment for the aggregate, recycle, compost and wood waste industries. The company is currently known for manufacturing the largest screen machine in the world.

struction, and 3.2 percent in private office construction. The economist said the steep drop in public construction, which fell for the seventh straight month in April — by 1.9 percent — and shrank to a four-year low, was cause for concern. “It appears that federal stimulus and military base realignment work are tapering off, while state and local budgets for infrastructure have been shrinking for some time,” he said. The four largest public categories, accounting for threefourths of public construction spending, all declined in April: highway and street construction, minus 1.6 percent; educational, minus 2.7 percent; transportation facilities, minus 3.8 percent; and sewage and waste disposal, minus 2.5 percent. Association officials said the mixed results show the importance of enacting long-term infrastructure funding bills for transportation, wastewater and drinking water, as well as having a tax and regulatory environment that encourages private investment in structures. “Economic recovery will remain sluggish and uneven unless construction and the sectors that depend on it share in growth,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer.

Crushing, Screening & Recycling Section Metso’s HP4 Proves Its Value in Multiple Applications Miller Machinery President Mike Miller has been tearing down crushers, identifying their problems, machining parts and getting involved in the start-up and evaluation of their performance since he was 14 years old. So it’s no small compliment when he says that Metso’s HP4 is one of the most versatile pieces of machinery he’s ever used. “I just think it’s an amazing crusher,” he said. “We bought three of them from Metso and they have been outstanding in every application where we’ve used them.” As a Metso distributor based in Longview, Wash., Miller covers large areas of the Pacific Northwest, and the demands on his machinery vary considerably. Of the three HP4s he operates, he said that “We put one in an extremely demanding stationary application in a large quarry in the Seattle area to replace a failing competitor’s machine; we swapped out another competitor’s crusher on a customer’s portable plant; and we have a portable plant we built ourselves which has been very successful in several different applications as a rental unit.” Consistent Output The HP4s have continually yielded higher production and produced a consistent output gradation due to the unique on-plant feed hopper/belt feeder that helps optimize the choke level in the cone. “It’s essential to maintain consistent cavity level in the crusher’s feed hopper to yield a consistent output gradation,” said Miller. “Our HP4 portable plant can handle that comfortably with our on-board cone feed belt and 6 cubic yard feed hopper that can swallow the surges in feed coming from the primary side of the plant. Our customers informed us that they were able to achieve less than 1½ percent variance from target values in their gradations, a feat they never achieved with their previous crushing spreads. ” Customers also are impressed with the crusher’s ability to pull upwards of 450 amps with absolutely no ring bounce. “The HP4’s claim to fame is its tremendous crushing force and ability to run at tight settings that were never possible before and pull maximum power from the motor,” said Miller. “It has exceptionally high tramp

relief forces that virtually eliminate your concerns for ring bounce, which is one of the leading causes of catastrophic failure in cone crushers.” With changing product requirements and the trend towards finer materials requirements, the crushed aggregate mix for an asphalt plant requires a lot of power. “The tighter you can maintain the setting on the cone crusher, the more productive and efficient the crusher will be,” said Miller. “And that’s what really separates the HP4 from its competitors.”

HP series cone crushers, which means more mass to wear on. It also has a unique antihead spin device which significantly reduces liner wear during initial feed stage of operation. Additionally, the HP4 liners do not require epoxy backing material, which means that when they’re replaced cure-time for the epoxy is eliminated. The resultant increased availability of the crusher to resume production yields higher annual plant output than previously possible.

Wears Reduced Miller noted that the HP4 has proven to yield exceptionally good mantle and bowl liner wear life as compared to other cone crushers. A couple of factors influencing this are that the HP4 design allows for the use of thicker liners by comparison to the original

Development Team Miller recently joined the Metso construction group’s North American Crusher Development Team. Adrian Quigg (VP Distributor Sales, Americas) invited Miller to participate in the team, which had its first meeting in York, Pa. “We focused on reviewing existing prod-

ucts to see where they fit in the market and to identify niche opportunities for other new and improved products,” said Miller. “We discussed HPX technologies and identified a wide range of applications where we could put the HP4 to good use to benefit of our customers.” The group’s goal is to further develop crushing machinery that will most efficiently yield the best quality crushed aggregate products, while minimizing the overall operation costs, in a safe and environmentally friendly manner for the customer. “Metso’s support and dedication to offering high performance crushing machinery has been a key factor in allowing our company to be successful in the pursuit of offering our customers results they can count on,” Miller said. Powercrusher™ Crushers & Screeners from Atlas Copco

Rock Star

The Raptor XL1100 cone crusher can draw up to 1,200 hp (894 kW), delivering production capabilities of up to 2,240 tph (2,000 t) at a 1-1/3-in. (3.3 cm) closed-side setting.

There are many reasons why the Powercrusher is a star. The 11 models of crushers and six models of screeners offer capacities ranging from 250 to 500 tons per hour. Other features include: t Jaw crushers that use Quattro Movement, a figureeight motion that increases feeding capacity and produces a post-crush at the outlet—like two crushers in one. t A pre-screen feature available on the PC 6 model for higher value end product. t Track mounted for mobility and maneuverability in a smaller footprint. t National support for parts and service from Atlas Copco Powercrusher—POWER is just the beginning. 800-732-6762 Atlas Copco Construction & Mining www.atlascopco.us

Raptor XL1100 Ideal for High-Tonnage Operations The Raptor XL1100 cone crusher, from FLSmidth Pekin LLC can draw up to 1,200 hp (894 kW), delivering production capabilities of up to 2,240 tph (2,000 t) at a 1-1/3-in. (3.3 cm) closed-side setting. Ideal for hightonnage mining operations, the unit handles feed size up to 24 in. (62 cm) and allows a reduction ratio of up to 6:4. The Raptor XL1100 cone crusher incorporates a heavy-duty hydraulic design that improves the durability of the tramp release components, while reducing the number of accumulators required. This hydraulic configuration reduces ongoing maintenance costs while delivering performance and reliability, according to the manufacturer. FLSmidth’s “fail safe” hydraulic protection system also provides an external relief that prevents severe structural overloads if an accumulator bladder should fail — protecting both the hydraulic system and the crusher. Advanced overload sensing technology detects crushing force overload. A simple alarm is activated, or the system can be automated to take corrective action. This same advanced automation system can be used to optimize crusher performance, with feed control, setting adjustment and monitoring of all critical lubrication and hydraulic parameters. Powered by a 1,000 hp (745 kW) motor, the XL1100 cone is designed to operate and

remain mechanically sound at a wide range of eccentric speeds. Because of this versatility, the eccentric speed can be selected to maximize throughput, size reduction and product yield. Eccentric surface finish is critical to bearing longevity under high-performance crushing conditions, and the XL1100 cone’s advanced eccentric is a nodular iron casting of high-strength material with machinability and surface finish characteristics. The Raptor XL1100 cone has an alloyed cast steel threearm frame with one oversized arm used for the countershaft cartridge. The Raptor XL1100 cone crusher employs spiral-bevel gear technology for a combination of durability and reliability while minimizing gear noise. Available with shorthead or standard bowls, the XL1100 cone is practical for secondary, tertiary and quaternary applications. An additional safety feature standard on all Raptor models is the counterclockwise rotation crushing action that protects the machine if adjustment ring movement is excessive or if the ring gear brake fails, according to the manufacturer. The growing family of Raptor high-performance cone crushers includes the XL300, XL400, XL500, XL600, XL900, XL1100, XL1300 and XL2000. Attachments Transform Off-the-Shelf Machine Into Producer “We were chomping at the bit to use this thing. They did a lot of work to make this thing right and to make it work for us. In terms of fit and finish, we couldn’t ask for anything more.” Bruce Howard Bruce Howard Contracting

Bruce Howard’s excavator has been custom accessorized.

Geith and Case worked together to design Bruce Howard’s dream machine.

To everyone else it’s an excavator. To Bruce Howard’s team, the machine with its customized suite of Geith attachments is part dream come true and part Swiss Army Knife — an incredibly versatile tool, capable of tackling any job, big or small. And Howard has more than a few jobs that needed doing…and doing well. “We’re a small business that’s been fortunate enough to grow,” said Howard, owner of Bruce Howard Contracting in Lenaxa, Va. “We do a variety of projects, from site clearing work to projects for utilities, as well as work for residential and commercial construction companies. I need machines and equipment that can be as flexible as the jobs we take on.” So with a need to be productive

and profitable on his mind, Howard went to Lawrence Equipment, the Case dealer in Ashland, Va. He knew his jobs and crew would get a boost from a modified excavator and trustworthy attachments that were strong and reliable, but also versatile and precise. He made a list of what his dream machine would include: wider tracks for maximum flotation in wet areas, extended dozer blade, short stick… the list went on… That’s where Steve Kelly, service manager of Lawrence Equipment, came into the picture. The two men had known each other since Howard’s earliest days in business when he bought his first equipment from Joe Gomer at Gomer Equipment, a widely

respected figure in the region’s construction sector. Kelly and Howard did business occasionally over the years, and Kelly was intrigued by this new challenge. They talked it over and ultimately agreed that Geith attachments on the recommended CX135 excavator would provide the durability, versatility and functionality to cover the full spectrum of jobs Howard’s company tackles. Kelly (along with Sean O’Reilly at Geith) worked with Howard as a guide and problem solver on the ambitious package: a Geith hydraulic quick coupler, shortened boom, hydraulic progressive link thumb, 60-in. (152 cm) hydraulic see ATTACHMENTS page 28

tilt bucket and 36-in. (91 cm) digging bucket, the extra-wide tracks and an extra long custom-welded dozer blade. Modifications completed, all that was left were the final touches. “We had our painter clean it up and make it look factory fresh,” said Kelly. “We were chomping at the bit to use this thing,” Howard said. “They did a lot of work to make this thing right and to make it work for us. In terms of fit and finish, we couldn’t ask for anything more.” The moment of truth: taking the “mini on steroids” (as nicknamed by Howard’s foreman Jamie Parsley) out on its first job. “It worked flawlessly,” said Howard. The operator could sit by himself, switch attachments in a matter of moments and grab logs with the thumb or a piece of concrete on the fly, according to Howard. “It’s about as close as you can get to digging with a human hand,” Howard said. Now Howard is taking on new jobs …

unusual jobs… using this machine with its zero tail swing, quick coupler and diverse tools. “It allows us to switch buckets and clean up behind us,” said Howard. “We don’t have to use additional equipment. We don’t need additional rentals. So we don’t end up with wasted time.” And there’s no money wasted on excess rentals, as well, he said. While Howard’s confident the machine and its Geith attachments will pay off in productivity, he’s not sure if getting the tricked out machine was the best or worst decision he’s ever made. “I’m going to need four more of these machines because my guys are always fighting over who gets to use it” he joked. “They keep it looking like new because they know that the longer they take better care of it, the more they’ll get to use it. So now it’s the prettiest machine around.” For more information, visit www.geith.com.

Rototilt combines continuous rotation, 40 degree side tilt in each direction, and a hydraulic quick coupler all in one package.

With the maneuverability of wheeled excavators, and the flexibility of the Rototilt attachment, this versatile combination is ideal for highway, county, or municipal applications. Very common in Europe, wheeled excavators and the Rototilt attachments are becoming more popular in North America. Rototilt combines continuous rotation, 40 degree side tilt in each direction, and a

hydraulic quick coupler all in one package. It allows a bucket or other attachment to be rotated and tilted at the same time, making it simple to operate around or under obstacles, and for any type of ground contouring. The combination of continuous rotation and side tilt lets the worker approach the job from any angle. For more information call 519/754-2195 or visit www.indexator.us.

The heavy-duty cylinder guarding system, designed to protect the cylinders and internal components, is easily removed for maintenance.” Other changes Raihala cited include reverse-mounted cylinders to protect rods from damage, large-bore hydraulic cylinders to maximize clamping force, and long-life, abrasion-resistant steel tips that are easily replaced with a simple perimeter weld. “We also recognized that our customers want a choice in tines, and Genesis now offers the widest variety,” he said. “We provide flat bottom or pointed tine shapes and augment them with three spade types — half-, narrow- and widewidth — to meet specific application needs.” Additional GSG features include large-diameter hardened steel pins with integrated shear-proof retainers, high-torque 360 degree continuous rotation for better material access and placement, and an overall footprint designed to easily fit inside trailers. Major Wire Names Westate Machinery Clear Direction of New Screen Media Dealer in Northwest Taxes, Trade Policy Could Spur Growth

Montreal-based Major Wire Industries Limited has named Westate Machinery Company as its new screen media authorized dealer in Montana, eastern Idaho and parts of Wyoming. The dealership offers all of Major Wire’s screen media solutions, including the Flex-Mat 3 self-cleaning screen media in tensioned and modular versions and optimumwire woven wire. Westate has worked directly with aggregate and mining customers for more than 60 years, providing screen media and other crushing, screening and replacement part solutions. The dealership has built a reputation for supplying screen media with very short lead times. This is made possible because Westate keeps track of and stocks the screen media wire diameters and opening sizes its customers regularly use, according to the company. “Westate is an ideal fit for Major Wire’s product line because they understand how to prove the value of advanced screen media technology to their customers,” said Jean Leblond, Major Wire president. “Flex-Mat 3 tensioned and modular helps producers achieve higher throughput, increase screen capacity and production and eliminate common blinding and pegging problems. Combine that with Westate’s commitment to serve its customers with highquality solutions, and we have a very good team.” Major Wire’s advanced Flex-Mat 3 high-performance, self-cleaning screen media technology is available in a ten-

sioned version as an alternative to traditional woven wire and a modular version designed to replace polyurethane and rubber modular screen panels. Independently vibrating wires increase product throughput by up to 40 percent over traditional woven wire or polyurethane panels by increasing screening action and open area and eliminating blinding, pegging and clogging. Flex-Mat 3 panels provide up to 30 percent more screen capacity than woven wire and up to 50 percent more screen capacity than polyurethane and rubber panels, according to the manufacturer. Major Wire’s optimumwire woven wire has a unique chemical makeup that provides up to 40 percent longer wear life when compared to traditional woven wire of the same diameter. Delivering a combination of ductility, hardness and tensile strength, OptimumWire is less susceptible to breaking in high-impact conditions and with highly abrasive materials, so it lasts longer and minimizes labor, maintenance and lost production costs. “Our 60 years of screen media experience has taught us that a customer-driven approach is beneficial to both parties,” commented Josh Reno, Westate sales manager. “We try to be your partner in screening, unlike a lot of typical hands-off dealerships. We can identify your screen media options quickly over the phone or make a personal visit to determine a screening solution for you.” For more information, call 800/999-6676 or visit www.westate.com.

in the U.S. to make that happen,” Rapp said. But Rapp added that the business community needs to hear more about the government’s plan for taxes, trade and key drivers like highway construction. Earlier May 19, Caterpillar said its April sales were up 66 percent over a year earlier. Overseas sales that drove that growth are a product of continuing urbanization in developing countries, Rapp said. Rapp added that while not many other companies in Illinois are publicly joining Peoria-based Caterpillar in its drive to push the state to lower worker’s compensation costs and other factors that make it more expensive to do business in the state, he believes the state’s businesses recognize the need for changers in Illinois and the country. Caterpillar CEO Douglas Oberhelman earlier this year complained to Gov. Pat Quinn about the cost of doing business in Illinois and said the company is regularly courted by other states. Oberhelman later said Caterpillar has no plans to move.

Cat 775G Off-Road Truck Meets Tough Emissions Standards The Cat 775G off-highway truck sets new performance standards for the model while meeting U.S. EPA Tier IV final emissions standards. A combination of new drive train strategies and a five percent power increase over the previous model enable the 70-ton (63.5 t) payload class truck to hold a higher gear when climbing 10 percent grades in most applications. A number of new components and control changes boost efficiency. A key is the next generation of Cat transmission controls, named advanced productivity electronic control strategy. The system enhances productivity, fuel efficiency and drive train durability, and it enables enhanced machine control. For example, to balance fuel savings and production, two different economy shift mode selections enable the customer to tailor performance to the needs of the business, according to the manufacturer. Advanced control systems also integrate the optional engine compression brake with automatic retarder control to enable faster downhill travel and reduced cycle times ― without increased fuel consumption. To meet Tier IV final emissions regulations in the United States, the Cat C27 ACERT engine includes the Cat NOx reduction system and diesel oxidation catalyst. Working in combination with ACERT technology, the Cat NOxreduction system continually diverts and cools a small volume of the engine exhaust gases, then returns the cooled gases to the combustion chamber. This process reduces cylinder temperatures and, consequently, lowers NOx formation. The no-maintenance diesel oxidation catalyst reduces

certain hydrocarbons in the exhaust. The system requires the use of ultra low sulfur diesel fuel and does not use a diesel particulate filter. In the European Union and other areas, the 775G will be configured to meet EU Stage II emissions standards, which is the EU regulation applicable to the power output of the engine. The 775G engine produces net power of 779 hp (581 kW), and target gross weight of the truck is 246,500 lbs. (111,811 kg). As with the previous model, a number of different body options enable a customer to configure a truck to

achieve optimum capacity and durability. The 775G will replace the 775F when it goes into commercial production in the fourth quarter of 2011. Designs to Help Operators, Maintenance Techs The 775G also features a new cab and other changes to help the operator do the job safely and efficiently. The operator seat is in the center of the cab, which provides more space for the operator, and the cab has access and egress from either side. The access system is equipped with stairs illuminated by LED lights.

The new cab provides a 4 dbA reduction in noise experienced by the operator, which helps the operator fight fatigue over a long work period. The left window is electrically powered for convenience, and the cab heating and cooling feature automatic temperature control. An enhanced cab precleaner is available as an option to further increase air quality and extend the lives of HVAC components. For easy access by maintenance technicians, the 775G has a ground level electrical service center and diagnostics port on the front bumper. The Cat VIMS data

collection system now is standard equipment on the 775G. It allows the customer to access prognostic and diagnostic information. The optional VIMS service light on the front of the truck will indicate any machine event that affects performance. Fluid level indication and fluid fill ports are grouped for efficient service, and fluid filters are grouped. Filter service intervals for steering, hoist/brake and transmission/torque converter have been increased from 500 to 1,000 hours. For more information, visit www.cat.com.

Developers Pitch Arena Complex Plans to Nevada Lawmakers By Michelle Rindels CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) Developers are making a last-minute pitch to lawmakers for authority to create elaborate arena and event complexes they say will transform Nevada city centers. Senate Revenue and Assembly Taxation committees June 2 considered a bill authorizing Clark and Washoe counties to establish special taxing districts to fund one proposed project. “This is one of the more exciting opportunities this session. We’re giving communities in Clark County the opportunity to create jobs in the short and long term,” said Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford, DLas Vegas. Three plans are in play for Las Vegas and the ultimate decision on which one to back would be up to local jurisdictions. One proposal seeks to create a stadium at University of Nevada, Las Vegas surrounded by a shopping center and housing. Proponents said it would reinvent the commuter culture on campus and forge a bond between the school and its students.

A second plan promoted by International Development Management CEO Chris Milam seeks to create a privately-owned Las Vegas National Sports Center that could accommodate major league soccer and hockey and minor league baseball. The complex includes an arena, a ballpark and a stadium and would be located on the west side of I-15 behind Mandalay Bay. A third plan co-sponsored by the city of Las Vegas and developer Cordish Company creates an events center connecting Symphony Park and downtown Las Vegas. Proponents of all three projects urged lawmakers to pass the bill as a way to create construction jobs and stimulate the Las Vegas economy. SB501 was introduced late May 30 by the Senate Finance Committee in a hastily called meeting on the floor. Assemblywoman Marilyn Kirkpatrick, chairwoman of the Assembly Taxation Committee, had a litany of questions for project proponents and said she wanted to hear the nuts and bolts of the financing proposal during hearings scheduled over the next few days. Her committee heard the bill the morning of June 3.
