For almost 30 years, Operation Smile has been giving smiles to children and young adults around the world. Some 160,000 patients, who previously suffered from a debilitating cleft, have benefited from Operation Smile’s services that have allowed children to be healed, regardless of their financial standing. The good will that the organization has garnered over the years is now being returned to them, in part, through a land donation from the city of Virginia Beach where the organization’s new Global Headquarters is being built. The groundbreaking for the new $20million Global Headquarters occurred on Sept. 29, 2010, with a multitude of dignitaries present for the ceremony, including Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell; Donald Trump Jr., who serves on Operation

A small fleet of powerful JCB machines is playing a big role in paving the way for rebuilding in part of earthquake-devastated Haiti. Two JCB excavators and a wheeled loading shovel have been bought by the international charity Oxfam and donated to the not-for-profit organization Disaster Waste Recovery (DWR), which is clearing damaged houses and recycling the resulting debris in one of the poorest areas of the Caribbean island’s capital Port Au Prince. The JCB JS220XD and JS145W excavators and JCB 426ZX machines are working in partnership demolishing damaged properties and loading a crusher and screening plant. The resulting debris is then recycled and used in the reconstruction of buildings, roads and pavements. The order — which was won in the face of competition from other major global manufacturers — also included a JCB HM1560Q Hammermaster breaker and a JCB MP200U multi-processor attachment for use on the JS220XD and a JCB HM860Q Hammermaster breaker for the JS145W. JCB also provided seven days’ on-site operator training in Haiti. Oxfam’s Logistic Co-ordinator in Haiti Hubert Ballaman said, “The location where the JCB

Smile’s Board of Directors; and Virginia Beach Mayor William D. Sessoms Jr., to name a few. The donated parcel of land, which is 9.37 acres (3.748 h) and valued at $3.5 million, is located in the midst of Virginia Beach’s “Academic CONEXPO COVERAGE Village,” a new area that CONTINUES... focuses on higher learning. see page 10 Some neighbors include the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center, the Advanced Technology Center, Tidewater Community College (TCC), the soon-to-be-built city of Virginia Beach Joint Use Library, and numerous organizations within the local health care industry. The parcel of land is considered a “collaborative parcel” that has a shared service yard and shared outdoor space and common areas with TCC’s Regional Health Professions Center building. see SMILE page 16

JCB Adds West Coast Parts Distribution Center in Fontana JCB has opened a new West Coast parts distribution center in Fontana, Calif., bringing its total number of distribution centers in North America to three. The new facility is part of JCB’s ongoing commitment to enhance customer support in North America. The distribution center will primarily serve customers in the Mountain and Pacific time zones, helping to reduce freight costs and shorten delivery times. JCB’s other North American parts distribution centers are located in Burlington, Ontario and Savannah, Ga. “As we expand our North American dealer network, it’s important for us to continue providing each of our customers with the parts they need as quickly as possible,” said John Patterson, chairman and CEO of JCB Inc. “At JCB, we understand that time is money, and with this new distribution center, our customers will be able to benefit from less equipment downtime and enjoy greater productivity on their job sites.” JCB will use SAP inventory management solutions and Syncron global supply chain management software at its west coast distribution center, bringing it in line with all of JCB’s distribution facilities around the world. While the new distribution center certainly supports JCB’s customer support philoso-

phy, it also underscores the company’s strong global commitment to the environment by promoting more sustainable practices, according to the manufacturer. “The world is changing, and we need to realign our responsibilities accordingly,” Patterson said. “That includes placing a greater emphasis on environmental stewardship and sustainability. Our new distribution center will allow us to ship parts shorter

diWtances, reducing fuel consumption and costs as well as the amount of pollutants created during the transportation process.” JCB’s dedication to sustainability extends beyond its efforts to streamline parts availability. The company has developed a number of sustainable equipment innovations in recent years, including a 23-percent reduction in direct carbon emissions since 2007, and a 16-percent decrease in fuel consump-

tion from its new and improved range of backhoe loaders and skid steer loaders. “We’re confident that this new distribution center will enable us to better serve our growing customer base while also making it possible for JCB and its dealers to reduce their collective carbon footprint,” Patterson said. Big Role for Small Fleet of JCB Caterpillar Provides Update Machines in Earthquake-Hit Haiti

on Impact of Crisis in Japan North and Central Florida’s Cat dealer, Ring Power Corporation, reported Caterpillar’s ongoing commitment to aid in Japan. Recently, Caterpillar Inc. and Caterpillar Japan Limited have actively monitored the on-going developments in Japan following the devastating earthquake and tsunami to report ramifications for Cat and the Caterpillar dealer network. While continuing to provide support for all employees living and working in Japan, Caterpillar is focusing resources from around the world to determine the full scope and impact on the company’s supply chain. Caterpillar’s facilities in Tokyo, Akashi and Sagami were not damaged by the earthquake, and are outside of the current area the Japanese government has declared as a mandatory evacuation zone. To date, both the Sagami and Akashi facilities have continued to operate and produce product, and the disruption to the supply chain in Japan has not stopped production at other

Caterpillar facilities around the world. Cat is actively developing alternative sources for components produced by Japanese-based suppliers, should they not be able to fulfill orders. Although Cat’s Japanese interests appear sound, Caterpillar cautions it is possible some facilities may be sporadically impacted throughout Japan’s recovery. In addition to Caterpillar’s economic research on behalf of suppliers, employees, dealers and customers, Caterpillar Japan Limited has pledged $1 million to support disaster relief through in-kind equipment donations of machinery and generators to Japanese governmental agencies. In America, the Caterpillar Foundation has announced a $1 million grant to the American Red Cross with an additional promise to match up to $500,000 in contributions made by Caterpillar employees, retirees and dealer employees to the Red Cross before April 14, 2011.

machines are working is in the town and often in-between houses and the decision on which houses are demolished is often down to local residents who request their plot to be cleared. “This particular part of the project should see [178,574 t] of rubble cleared, allowing 16,200 people to be re-housed in 4,500 properties. “The team is working in very difficult conditions; it’s busy, hot and dusty and controlling lots of curious passers-by can be an issue for the operators and residents. “All the operators are very pleased with the JCB machines and they particularly appreciate their ease and precision of operation and working in an air-conditioned cab with a comfortable seat.” The demolition and clean-up operation follows the earthquake on Jan. 12, 2010, which measured 7.0 on the Richter Scale and killed an estimated 230,000 people. More than a year later, 800,000 people are still living in camps. Immediately after the earthquake, JCB

Chairman Sir Anthony Bamford donated two JCB 3CX backhoe loaders worth $150,000 to help with the relief effort. They are currently working for not-profit organization Food for the Poor and have so far been deployed to clear rubble, excavate sewage pits, dig out foundations and reconstruct walls and build schools and sanitation facilities. The UN Development Program estimates that 200,000 buildings collapsed in Port au Prince, creating 13 million cu. yd. of rubble — only 20 percent of which has so far been cleared. DWR’s project is financed by Oxfam GB with funding from the UKbased Disasters Emergency Committee and is working in neighborhoods of Port au Prince, demolishing damaged buildings and clearing away debris, so that people can return to their homes. DWR is a specialized UK registered not for profit organization that focuses on designing and implementing waste and debris management projects in postdisaster and postconflict situations.

Hourigan Construction Leads Operation Smile Project SMILE from page 1

Virginia Beach-based Hourigan Construction is providing construction management and design/build services for the project. Clark Nexsen Architecture and Engineering, Norfolk, Va., is the architect of record, and the Virginia Beach office of Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. (VHB) is overseeing the civil engineering aspects of the project. Furthermore, there will be various subcontractors on site as the project progresses, including Chesapeake, Va.-based Higgerson-Buchanan Inc., which has already performed approximately 10 percent of the work on the project. Bids for other portions of the project, including concrete and structural steel work, will be awarded in early April. Initial work on the project began in December with earthwork and site development performed by HiggersonBuchanan. Utility work, parking lot construction and retention pond installation have commenced. The parking lot consists of 142 spaces and is made of asphalt and geogrid pavers. Furthermore, the lot has a bioretention system which is meant to capture and filter run-off from storms. As of the middle of March, the architectural, structural and MEP design aspects were approximately 75 percent complete. The building construction will begin this spring, with an anticipated project completion date of April 2012. Starting in April, work will include removing the surcharge and pouring the concrete foundations, which will consist of approximately 2,000 cu. yds. (1,520 cu m) of concrete. In addition, there will be about 250 tons (225 t) of structural steel used on this project. For its portion of the work, Higgerson-Buchanan used GPS navigation-controlled excavators, off-road dump trucks and bulldozers. Additional equipment on hand for site development and utility work include: Caterpillar 330C and 330L excavators, Caterpillar D5M and D6R LGP dozers, a Caterpillar CS563C compaction roller, and a Hitachi 160 excavator. Some of these pieces of equipment were used to move “One hundred and fifty thousand cubic yards of raw material within the site from the retention pond itself and surface areas of the parcel itself,” like parking lots, said Ron McIntosh, executive vice president, Hourigan Construction. All raw material remained on site in keeping with the LEED certification. A key component of the headquarter’s design is its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

Silver certification. This certification indicates that the building was designed and constructed using green solutions. The design also features a limestone colored brick veneer with a two-story office and exhibit area and a highbay warehouse. According to McIntosh, the building will be “integrated with curtain wall and curtain wall systems and metal paneling.” The layout of the new headquarters consists of 72,300 sq. ft. (6,507 sq m), which includes the 16,000-sq. ft. (1,440 sq m) warehouse, about 50,000 sq. ft. (4,500 sq m) of office space, and approximately 8,000 sq ft (720 sq m) of dedicated public space. The warehouse portion is a “clean” warehouse that will be used to store surgical supplies, pharmaceuticals and medical equipment as well as provide an area for logistical purposes. The dedicated public space is a unique multipurpose feature that Operation Smile incorporated into the design in order to create a sensory experience so visitors can be immersed in various global environments and in the lives of actual patients. One such exhibit allows visitors to live through the story of a child with a cleft. The story will show how the child moves from a life with little hope to a life with a brighter future and dignity. Exhibits also will show how Operation Smile has evolved over the years and demonstrate future goals. “It is an educationally focused building,” said Jessica Kraft, director of public relations of Operation Smile. The move from Norfolk, its present location, to Virginia Beach will provide more space for these educational programs as well as for collaborative meetings. “A key goal for Operation Smile,” explained Kraft, “is to build sustainability in our partner countries so that incountry medical personnel can provide year-round quality care for the thousands of children around the world who suffer from cleft lips and cleft palates.” In addition to providing medical services to children, the organization also contributes medical equipment and provides hands-on training for medical professionals in the partner countries. Operation Smile, one of the world’s leading volunteerbased children’s medical charities, was founded in 1982 by Dr. Bill and Kathy Magee and has annual revenue of $67 million. (This story also can be found on Construction Equipment Guide’s Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com.) CEG

A Caterpillar CS563C compaction roller and a Hitachi 160 excavator are being used for site development and utility work at Operation Smile’s new $20 million Global Headquarters.

Virginia Beach-based Hourigan Construction is providing construction management and design/build services for the new $20 million Global Headquarters under construction for Operation Smile.

A Caterpillar 330C excavator and a Caterpillar D5M dozer are on hand for site development at Operation Smile’s Global Headquarters, which is under construction in Virginia Beach, Va.

An off-road dump truck awaits a load at the construction site for the new Global Headquarters of Operation Smile in Virginia Beach, Va. The site development included moving 150,000 cu. yds. (114,683 cu m) of raw material within the site.

Navistar Showcases Comprehensive Mack Unveils New Lineup of Alternative Energy Vehicles Rear Axle Carriers At the Green Truck Summit at the National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) Work Truck Show, Navistar showcased a number alternative fueled vehicles for the work truck market. On display at the event were the Class 2-3c all-electric eStar truck, an International DuraStar hybrid, and an International WorkStar equipped with a compressed natural gas (CNG) powertrain. “Work truck customers have diverse business needs and are looking for a wide range of truck features to help perform their jobs,” said Jim Hebe, senior vice president, North American sales operations, Navistar. “We’re proud to offer the broadest, most energy-efficient line of trucks in the industry, helping deliver real-world savings to the bottom line.” eStar All-Electric Commercial Truck The latest in Navistar’s commercial truck line-up is the allelectric eStar truck, the first purpose-built medium-duty commercial vehicle to receive U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification as a clean fuel fleet vehicle as well as California Air Resources Board (CARB) certification as a zero emissions vehicle. This Class 2c-3 eStar all-electric truck — the first in its category — has a range of 100 miles per charge, making it ideal for many urban applications. When it returns to its home base at the end of the day, it can be plugged in and fully recharged in approximately 6 to 8 hours. Unlike other electric trucks that are reconfigured models of fossil-fuel trucks, the eStar truck has been purpose-built for electric power, with a low center of gravity (the battery is between the frame rails, not mounted on top) and a 36-ft. (11 m) turning circle. The eStar is engineered with aerodynamics, a walk-through cab and a quick-change cassette-type battery that can be swapped out in 20 minutes, enabling around-theclock operation. It is capable of carrying payloads up to 2 tons (1.8 t). With zero tailpipe emissions, each eStar truck can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 10 tons (9 t) annually. The windshield provides nearly 180-degree visibility, the low-floor design provides easy loading/unloading and the noise level is near zero, which makes this nimble vehicle ideal for urban areas facing noise challenges, according to the manufacturer. The eStar all-electric truck transitioned from concept to reality in August 2009, when President Barack Obama visited Navistar’s manufacturing plant in Indiana to announce $39.2 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds from the Transportation Electrification Initiative administered by the U.S. Department of Energy. A year later, Navistar completed testing and validation, developed and delivered prototype vehicles, and received EPA and CARB certifications. The eStar meets all Federal Motor Vehicles Safety Standards (FMVSS) and Navistar is currently taking orders and building these all-electric trucks. International DuraStar Hybrid While the International DuraStar hybrid truck looks like an ordinary work truck, it can deliver fuel savings of up to 60 percent in utility-type applications, when the MaxxForce engine often can be turned off and electric power still operates the vehicle. Beyond the fuel savings potential, the DuraStar hybrid pro-

duces zero emissions when auxiliary equipment (like an overhead utility bucket) operates solely on the truck’s battery power. The International DuraStar hybrid diesel-electric hybrid utility truck is powered by the MaxxForce DT diesel engine in conjunction with a mild parallel-type, diesel-electric hybrid architecture, developed by Eaton Corporation, which leads to less diesel fuel use and fewer emissions. The hybrid-electric system utilizes a regenerative braking system to recover energy normally lost during braking, stores the energy in batteries and adds power back into the driveline during starts and acceleration. This capability makes the truck more efficient in standard driving, particularly in city and stopand-go driving. When the truck reaches a work site, the hybrid system can power booms, aerial devices and other tools needed at the location for up to 90 minutes without the engine running, significantly reducing noise, emissions and fuel costs. Natural Gas International WorkStar During the Green Truck Summit, Navistar demonstrated a natural gas powered International WorkStar vehicle. The WorkStar features a DT-466 based natural gas engine developed in conjunction with Emissions Solutions Incorporated (ESI) of McKinney, Texas. ESI offers engine ratings from 175 to 300 hp (130 to 223 kW) with 460 to 860 lb.-ft. torque. The engines are capable of supporting both liquefied and compressed natural gas. The natural gas powered WorkStar model with either frame mounted or back-of-cab mounted natural gas tanks is available for customer ordering through International truck dealers and will be built at Navistar’s Garland Assembly Plant and Truck Specialty Center in Garland, Texas. Like the other vehicles in Navistar’s portfolio, the natural gas-powered WorkStar will be fully certified to meet 2010 emissions. “The utility industry is very conscious about their environmental image,” Hebe added. “Recognizing the abundant supply of natural gas in the United States and Canada, we felt very compelled to invest in our products in such a way that enables our customers to expand their usage of very low emissions technologies through our engines. The use of natural gas certainly accomplishes this and we are proud to partner with ESI to install this advanced engine at our facilities.” In 1989, Navistar was the first original equipment manufacturer to release the smokeless diesel engine and, in 2001, Navistar was the first engine manufacturer to gain certification from the EPA for meeting particulate and hydrocarbon emissions standards — six years ahead of schedule. The company also was the first to enter line production of hybrid commercial trucks and hybrid school buses. About Navistar Navistar International Corporation is a holding company whose subsidiaries and affiliates produce International brand commercial and military trucks, MaxxForce brand diesel engines, IC Bus brand school and commercial buses, Monaco RV brands of recreational vehicles, and Workhorse brand chassis for motor homes and step vans. The company also provides truck and diesel engine service parts. Another affiliate offers financing services. For more information, visit www.Navistar.com/newsroom.

Mack Trucks Inc. brought more than a century of experience building drivelines to the design and engineering of the new Mack C150/151 rear axle carriers. The new carriers combine Mack design with improved rear axle ratios for highway and vocational applications. “The new C150/151 carriers play a key role in the Mack Pedigreed powertrain,” said David McKenna, Mack director of powertrain sales and marketing. “They’re lighter, stronger, and stiffer than previous designs and represent what Mack has learned about integrated drivetrains in the last 110 years. The rear carrier is absolutely critical to a successfully-spec’d truck, including the gear-fast/run-slow highway tractor. The new and expanded ratio coverage reflects the continuing evolution of North American powertrains.” The C150/151 retains Mack’s traditional and unique top-load, dual-reduction design. The top-loaded carrier — where the driveshaft connects to the carrier above the axle — results in near-zero driveline angles, which minimizes noise, vibration and harmonics. Potential oil leak paths are significantly reduced since the carrier joint is on the horizontal plane, above the level of the oil reservoir. Dual reduction reduces gear face friction and related parasitic losses, component stress and excess heat, increasing overall component life, according to the manufacturer. Mack’s power divider is standard with the new C150/151 carriers. The automatic power divider remains a standard feature, with an optional power divider lockout and optional differential locking systems. Rear axle ratios run from 3.11:1 to 5.66:1. The new carriers are compatible with all suspensions offered by Mack. For information, visit www.macktrucks.com.

Member Program Promotes Excellence The National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) has made enhancements to its member verification program (MVP). MVP members are recognized distributors, manufacturers and upfitters who have implemented quality business practices and have verified compliance with specific government safety regulations. The refinement of the program will include implementing two new optional MVP criteria and further modifying two existing criteria. Implementation of the two new optional criteria will go into effect July 1, 2011. The first criterion addition is to provide documentation of a written or published environmental or sustainability policy. The second new criterion requires companies to have written and documented customer post-sale follow-up processes. In addition, the quality assurance program criterion will become required and the already-required certified shop employees criterion will increase from having 10 percent of the shop employees certified to 20 percent in order to meet MVP status. For more information, call 1/800-441-NTEA.

Texas’s Bane Machinery Becomes Sennebogen Dealer Bane Machinery has expanded its offering with Sennebogen’s green line of purpose-built material handlers. Constantino Lannes, president of Sennebogen North America, recently announced that Bane Machinery has been appointed as the newest addition to the company’s growing distributor network for Sennebogen. From its headquarters

Scott Bane (L), president of Bane Machinery, and Constantino Lannes, president of Sennebogen North America, are looking forward to joining forces.

in Dallas, Texas, Bane Machinery will represent Sennebogen products from its locations in Dallas and Fort Worth. Third Generation Family Business Scott Bane, the president of Bane Machinery said his company has a long history in the equipment and machinery market that started in 1963 when his grandfather George P. Bane purchased Texas Tractor Company. He was joined by his son George P. Bane II who became president of the company in 1980. Eight years later, the company opened a second location in Dallas. Scott and his brother Phil are the third generation of Banes to join the family business. In 2001, their father passed along the company reins into their hands and the following year, they expanded with a third location in Fort Worth. Bane Machinery represents off-road equipment manufacturers serving a wide range of markets in commercial and residential construction. Scott Bane said the company is mostly known for its earthmoving machinery and road maintenance equipment. “Our excavator and wheel loader business has been our primary focus for the last several years, mainly used for highway construction and new residential construction,” he said. With the objective of continuing to grow the company, Bane is always looking out for quality manufacturers to partner with. However, with the soft residential construction market being slow to recover, he said, it was time to look for new opportunities. He utilized his contacts in the industry asking about manufacturers making quality machines for the scrap and recycling industry. “Sennebogen was a line that was highly recommended by many of the dealers I know.” “It made sense for us to diversify and we thought the Sennebogen line of material handlers would help us get into markets that we have not really been in before,” he said, adding that the bulk of this new business will come from the scrap industry. “Recycling will be our focus and then possibly waste facilities and transfer stations, but I anticipate that 80 percent of our business will be with the scrap guys.” Strong Talking Points Despite being relatively new to this industry, Bane said he doesn’t expect it to be a hard sell. “These machines are available on tracks as well as rubber tired units. This is new to us, so having that for the first time is exciting. Once you get anything that is purpose-built, you have an advantage. The guys in the scrap business are very familiar with these features and the benefits they offer, and it will give us some strong talking points.” Although the company does have some customers in these markets, Bane said the Sennebogen line will provide

them with the opportunity to sell additional equipment. “We have carried items such as shears in the past, but you are not going to sell a shear unless you can get in the front door,” he said. He noted that his company needed a purpose-built material handler to be taken seriously in this industry. “This is really a close-knit industry and if you don’t have a true material handler, it is really hard to get into this market. But once you get in, the word spreads and we are hoping to get included in that sector,” he said. Even before the company took delivery of its first machine, an 821 M, it already laid down the ground work for promoting the new product line. Bane said the company attended the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) convention in May in San Diego, and it will launch a promotional campaign that will include trade magazine advertisements, direct mail, hosted equipment demonstrations and personal visits. The company also will utilize its seven sales representatives in the DFW metroplex and has already appointed a designated specialist, an employee with the company who is already familiar with the markets best suited for the Sennebogen line. Hands-On Approach “He has the background and he knows how it all works. Plus, he is already covering much of the territory, so he is a perfect fit to be the go-to-guy for scrap,” said Bane. He added that his sales team will take the same hands-on approach to covering this market that has worked well for more than four decades. “We have built our reputation around service for the last 47 years. We pride ourselves on taking care of our customers, and in a smaller family business, we are able to give customers that first-line of service that you are not going to get at other places,” said Bane. He added that he also is at the frontline in having direct contact with customers. “The initial response has been very positive and I look forward to being involved with this new venture on a day-today basis.” “Sennebogen’s purpose-built machines are very recognizable and the company is known as a market leader in the scrap industry so that’s what really drew me to them more than anything,” said Bane. “I liked the idea of Sennebogen being a family business like we are. It is a proactive company that has grown quickly. Sennebogen has just opened up a new facility and we are very excited by the opportunity in front of us. The company is going in the right direction and that’s where we want to be.” For more information contact 704/347-4910, e-mail sales@sennebogenllc.com or visit www.sennebogenna.com.

There are many reasons why the Powercrusher is a star. The 11 models of crushers and six models of screeners offer capacities ranging from 250 to 500 tons per hour. Other features include: t Jaw crushers that use Quattro Movement, a figureeight motion that increases feeding capacity and produces a post-crush at the outlet—like two crushers in one. t A pre-screen feature available on the PC 6 model for higher value end product. t Track mounted for mobility and maneuverability in a smaller footprint. t National support for parts and service from Atlas Copco Powercrusher—POWER is just the beginning. 800-732-6762 Atlas Copco Construction & Mining www.atlascopco.us
