OfficialsApprove Largest Demolition Plan in World History
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) U.S. regulators approved a plan todemolishfourdamsonaCaliforniariverandopenuphundreds of miles of salmon habitat that would be the largest dam removal and river restoration project in the world when it goes forward.
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s unanimous vote on the lower Klamath River dams is the last major regulatory hurdle and the biggest milestone for a $500 million demolition proposal championed by Native American tribes and environmentalists for years. The project would return the lower half of California’s secondlargest river to a free-flowing state for the first time in more than a century.
Native tribes that rely on the Klamath River and its salmon for their way of life have been a driving force behind bringing the dams down in a wild and remote area that spans the California and Oregon border. Barring any unforeseen complications, Oregon, California and the entity formed to oversee the project will accept the license transfer and could begin dam removal as early as this summer, proponents said.
“The Klamath salmon are coming home,” Yurok Chairman Joseph James said after the vote. “The people have earned this victory and with it, we carry on our sacred duty to the fish that have sustained our people since the beginning of time.”
The dams produce less than 2 percent of PacifiCorp’s power generation — enough to power about 70,000 homes — when they are running at full capacity, said Bob Gravely, spokesperson of the utility. But they often run at a far lower capacity because of low water in the river and other issues, and the agreement that paved the way for the vote was ultimately a business decision, he said.
PacifiCorp would have had to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in fish ladders, fish screens and other conservation upgrades under environmental regulations that were not in place when the aging dams were first built. But with the deal approved, the utility’s cost is capped at $200 million, with another $250 million from a California voter-approved water bond.
“We’re closing coal plants and building wind farms and it all just has to add up in the end,” he said of the demolition. “It’s not a one-to-one. You can make up that power by the way you operate the rest of your facilities or having energy efficiency savings so your customers are using less.”
Approval of the order to surrender the dams’ operating license is the bedrock of the most ambitious salmon restoration plan in history and the project’s scope — measured by
the number of dams and the amount of river habitat that would reopen to salmon — makes it the largest of its kind in the world, said Amy Souers Kober, spokesperson of American Rivers, which monitors dam removals and advocates for river restoration.
More than 300 mi. of salmon habitat in the Klamath River and its tributaries would benefit, she said.
The decision is in line with a trend toward removing aging and outdated dams across the U.S. as they come up for license renewal and confront the same government-mandated upgrade costs as the Klamath River dams would have had.
Across the U.S., 1,951 dams have been demolished as of February, including 57 in 2021,American Rivers said. Most of those have come down in the past 25 years as facilities age and come up for relicensing.
Commissioners called the decision “momentous” and “historic” and spoke of the importance of taking the action during National Native American Heritage Month because ofitsimportancetorestoringsalmonandrevivingtheriverthat is at the heart of the culture of several tribes in the region.

Doosan Bobcat Employees Donate More Than $250,000
Doosan Bobcat North America (Bobcat) employees recently wrapped-up their fall giving campaign, exceeding total donation goals.
The company donated more than $250,000 to local organizations in North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Georgia focused on education, community prosperity and health resources.
Bobcat’s fall charitable giving campaign took place over a twoweek period in October, allowing
employees to concentrate their efforts toward giving back to nonprofits working to cultivate local communities. In addition to the funds raised by employees, Doosan Bobcat matched nearly half of total employee donations to further amplify employee generosity.
New to this year’s campaign, employees could choose any organization with a 501(c)(3) status, rather than selecting from a set list of nonprofit organizations.
United Way remained a featured charity for the campaign, receiving
strong employee and organization support in addition to more than 100 other nonprofit recipients selected by employees. Doosan Bobcat has been a partner to United Way for more than 20 years, supporting its mission of inspiring and activating communities to improve lives.
“As an organization, our employees are passionate about giving back and improving the lives of those within our communities,” said Tina Amerman, director of talent experience at Bobcat. “By
providing employees with the opportunity to support organizations that are close to their hearts, we can accomplish more through our efforts to make a positive social impact.”
The fall giving campaign wrapped-up a season of volunteering and community efforts on behalf of the company. In September, Bobcat announced that more than 425 employees dedicated their time and talents to participate in 35 community projects toward the company’s annual
Doosan Days of Community Service events, a companywide volunteer effort aimed at giving back to the communities where Bobcat employees live and work.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s unanimous vote on the lower Klamath River dams is the last major regulatory hurdle and the biggest milestone for a $500 million demolition proposal championed by Native American tribes and environmentalists for years.
Measured by the number of dams and the amount of river habitat that would reopen to salmon, this makes it the largest demolition of its kind in the world.

ConExpo Helps Show WhereConstructionIndustryIsGoing
As ConExpo-Con/AGG continues to draw near, Stephen Roy, president, Region North America, at AEM member company Volvo Construction Equipment, discussed his thoughts on the show and the direction of the construction equipment industry.
Roy discussed what attendees and fellow exhibitors can expect from Volvo at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2023, what he looks forward to most about the upcoming edition of the show, and why it’s so important for equipmentmanufacturerstomaketheirpresence known to construction industry professionals in attendance this coming spring in Las Vegas.
We’re just a few short months away from ConExpo-Con/AGG, and it’s been almost three years since the construction industry came together in Las Vegas for the show. With that in mind, what are you personally looking forward to most about the 2023 edition?
Roy: For me, it’s really being able to highlight where Volvo is and where we’re at in our journey during a time that has been transformative in our industry. ConExpoCon/AGG offers us a chance to showcase whatwehave, gatherfeedbackfromourcustomers and engage our industry partners.
To really make a show like ConExpoCon/AGG work, the face-to-face aspect of it is so important. I think that’s why Las Vegas is the perfect venue for it. It attracts so many people, and with all the changes we’re seeing in our industry, I think it’ll be the perfect environment for people to find the latest and greatest innovations, as well as learn what will help their business succeed.
What does it mean for Volvo to be a part of the largest trade show in North America? And along those same lines, what should people expect to see from Volvo this coming year?
Roy: At Volvo we consider ourselves a change agent in this industry. Our theme is actually “Change starts here. Be ready for it.” So, for us at Volvo, we want to be at ConExpo-Con/AGG to help illustrate where we see the industry going and how we are preparing our customers to be ready for it.
We’re not alone in this, but some of things we will showcase at the show will really highlight how Volvo is driving a focus on sustainable power and automation, and how we can help our customers be more productive, more efficient and more successful in their efforts to serve their own customers.
We always say our goal is to make customers successful with their customers, so that’s the approach we’re taking. More specifically, we’ll have a mix of existing product, product that’s coming out soon and some forward-looking product that — like I mentioned before — will illustrate where the industry is going. That means a focus on sustainability, using electric machines and other sustainable power. We’ll showcase small compact electric equipment, all the way to larger equipment that has a mix of electric and diesel.
One thing that’s extremely important for us, and an area of focus for Volvo, centers on solutions for our machines. There’s no doubting the value and importance of the machines themselves. However, to maximize productivity and uptime, it takes the right solutions. So, at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2023, we’re going to showcase a lot of telematics platforms, a lot of productivity platforms, as well as machine controls — solutions, to increase productivity and uptime.
You’ve mentioned Volvo will have a lot in store for folks that stop by and visit your booth at the show. We’ve seen industry exhibitions and events continue to evolve, change and even grow over time. In what ways has Volvo responded to ensure attendees at shows like ConExpoCon/AGG get the most out of their time spent with your organization?
Roy: We’re very focused on making events and exhibitions like ConExpoCon/AGG a really valuable experience, so when our attendees are in the booth, they have access to the right information and the right experts who can answer their questions — and we want them to have fun in our booth too.
However, we don’t want to forget all those folks who won’t be able to be with us
in Las Vegas this coming March. And, while there’s every reason to expect the show to welcome another record-breaking crowd, we’re also aware there are probably just as many people who are interested in what’s taking place in Las Vegas, but they aren’t able to travel there. So, we’re really focused on offering a valuable virtual experience as well.
We know for sure that we’ll have a lot of folks from the construction industry at the show in Las Vegas. But there are still plenty of people who are considering it and making that decision at this point. If you could provide a piece of advice or a thought for them to consider, what would you say?
Roy: This show is once every three years. The technology shifts since the 2020 show are quite significant. And I think being there face-to-face helps secure a true sense of where the industry is going. Additionally, as an OEM, we want feedback from our customers, too. We want to hear what they struggle with and how can we support them as we continue to develop leading-edge machinery, but also solutions that will support their fleet and their job operations.
Turning that question on its head a little bit, we know it’s important for attendees to be there, but on the exhibitor side of things, what do you think the value proposition is for those who decide to make such an investment in exhibiting at ConExpo-Con/AGG every three years? Why is it so important for companies to make their presence known at this particular show?
Roy: I think there are a couple of major reasons why. For me, I think it’s a great time toseecustomersinoneplace, reconnectwith customers and talk about the business at hand, as well as how we can support them. But it’s also for OEMs to reach new customers and new customer segments.
The construction equipment industry is quite diverse. We’re seeing customers and applications today that maybe we weren’t talking to in the past — especially with the
introduction of zero-emission, low-noise electric machines — so it’s exciting for us to pursue some of these new and valuable opportunities.
It’s a really exciting time to be in the construction industry, as well as the equipment industry serving construction customers. With that in mind, as you look forward to this show and even beyond, what industry trends are you excited about in the future, and what trends do you think are going to be on display or showcased at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2023?
Roy: First and foremost, I think our customers are looking to make sure they become more efficient, more sustainable, and how they can support their customers. I think that you’ll see that when it comes to electrification, we’ll have discussions around autonomous and teleoperations machines as labor continues to get tight. And we’ll continue to focus on how to improve safety, productivity and uptime for our machines. Those are things customers today say consistently are important and will be more important in the future.
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Roy: One thing we’re very excited about is having our Gold Rush stars with us at ConExpo-Con/AGG, and it’s really exiting that we’ll have an electric-powered rallycross car that’s part of the FIA World Rallycross racing organization, right now in Europe, but making its way across the globe soon.
And then, on behalf of my fellow colleagues at Volvo, I just want to say ConExpo-Con/AGG is our time as an industry to show where the construction equipment is going and the changes that are coming, as well as an opportunity for equipment manufacturers who support to the show to be recognized for their efforts in driving transformational change within the construction industry.

Interview With an
Aggregate Production and Recycling Section
Cat 340 UHD Demolition Excavator Features Higher Reach
Built to withstand difficult demolition of tall structures, the new Cat 340 UHD ultra high demolition excavator boasts a more than 13 percent higher pin height than the 340F UHD to reach up to eight-floor structures.
More UHD and retrofit boom/stick configurations, along with a range of Cat demolition attachments, deliver increased machine flexibility to meet contractors’ jobsite needs to maximize machine utilization. Its unique coupling system allows for switching between two UHD fronts and Retrofit booms and sticks with no special tools in 15 minutes, according to the manufacturer.
Design updates have increased transportation simplicity of the 340 UHD excavator. The hydraulically actuated variable-gauge undercarriage is built to deliver both outstanding stability and efficient transport by offering a 13 ft. 4 in. extended width that retracts to only 9 ft. 10 in. with 24 in. track shoes for transport. A new one-piece cradle design, compared to two-piece on the 340F UHD, reduces UHD boom transportation height to less than 9 ft. 10 in.
Flexible Efficiency
The new 340 UHD allows for the sticks to be configured with Cat couplers to optimize machine versatility and productivity. With two UHD front options available, the 72 ft. 2 in. front offers a maximum 8,160 lb. weight at stick pin and maximum horizontal reach of 44 ft. 5 in. at stick nose over the front and side of the machine.
Working with a 7,280 lb. maximum weight at stick pin, the 82 ft. front offers a 43 ft. 9 in. maximum reach at stick nose over the front and side of the machine. It matches the line of Cat multi-processors, specifically the MP332 and MP324.
The hydraulic boom lines are quickly connected/disconnected by hand and without special tools, allowing the UHD front to be switched to the retrofit boom in a matter of minutes. Contractors can choose between one- or two-piece boom options for highproductivity truck loading or low-level demolition work.
Three stick options are available at lengths of 9 ft. 2 in., 10 ft. 6 in. and 12 ft. 10 in., providing ultimate flexibility for maxi-

mum machine utilization. Standard Cat payload provides on-the-go weighing and realtime estimates of the payload so operators can achieve precise load targets when working with the one piece retrofit boom.
Rated at 311 hp, the U.S. EPA Tier IV Final Cat C9.3B engine powering the new 340 UHD excavator runs on either diesel or biodiesel fuel up to B20 to meet jobsite requirements. Three engine power modes — Power, Smart and Eco — match the machine to job needs to significantly lower fuel consumption over the 340F UHD, according to the manufacturer.
Smart mode automatically matches engine and hydraulic power requirements, providing maximum power output when needed and reducing power on less demanding tasks to save fuel. A new high-efficiency hydraulic reversing fan cools the engine on demand to also help reduce fuel consumption.
Operator Productivity, Comfort
Operators efficiently navigate machine configuration and operating parameters on the new 10 in. high-resolution touchscreen monitor. Viewed through the new monitor,
the Cat active stability monitoring system continuously informs operators if the work tool is positioned within the safe working range and provides audible and visual warning alerts when approaching the stability limit. Ranging from 1.5 to 100 percent, the stability ratio side bar changes length and color from green to yellow to red, depending on the ratio.
Built to comfortably accommodate operators of all sizes, the width of the new premium heated and cooled seat has been increased by 5 percent over previous designs. Its new left-hand tilt-up console helps to improve ingress/egress up to 45 percent. Operators can program machine operating settings, including the joystick button controls, and the system stores each setting, based on the operator ID.
The 340 UHD features a 30-degree tilt-up cab design for more productive demolition and a comfortable sight line without neck strain when working on eight-floor buildings. For better visibility of the tool when working at height, the UHD front is work tool camera ready.
The demolition cab is equipped with
Falling Object Guard Structure (FOGS), and front and roof P5A, 0.4 in. laminated glass for safety. The windshield and roof glass feature one-piece parallel wipers with three intermittent settings with washer spray. Standard rearview and sideview cameras provide enhanced visibility of the operating area on the in-cab monitor. A 360-degree bird’s eye camera system is optional.
Simplified Maintenance
Maintenance intervals are extended and more synchronized on the Cat 340 UHD Excavator to lower operating costs and reduce service time. Offering a 50 percent longer service life, the new hydraulic filter improves filtration and features a 3,000-hour change interval while anti-drain valves keep the oil clean during filter replacement. The engine air intake filter with pre-cleaner delivers double the dust holding capacity of the previous design.
Grouped on the right-hand side of the machine, all fuel filters change at a synchronized 1,000-hour interval. Operators conveniently track filter life and maintenance intervals on the new in-cab monitor.
A ground-level shutoff switch stops all fuel to the engine and shuts down the machine, improving safety while servicing. The machine’s new flat engine hood improves rear visibility and incorporates a wide opening design for simplified servicing and oil level checking. All other daily maintenance routine checkpoints are easily accessible from ground level as is the location for draining fuel system water and fuel tank water to help save time. To efficiently collect fluid samples for analysis, all Cat S·O·S ports are conveniently accessed from ground level.
Technology Increases Management Efficiency
Beyond Cat payload, the new 340 UHD with the single retrofit boom is equipped with a host of Cat technologies designed to drive productivity and service efficiency. Cat E-fence and Cat Grade with 2D automatically guides depth, slope and horizontal distance to grade through the touchscreen monitor to boost machine productivity.

Supertrak Introduces SK190TR Rubber-Track Loader
Supertrak has announced the return of the dedicated rubber-track loader high horsepower option for its compact size product offerings.
For years, Supertrak has offered 120 to 140 hp in compact machines with dedicated closed loop high flow high pressure systems to meet the demand of increased production and retain cooling in the vegetation industry.
The SK190TR is the industry’s first most powerful 190 hp stage 5 rubber-track loader in its size class that meets the 1-ton towable market, according to the manufacturer.
The SK190TR is equipped with a 4.5 stage 5 Cummins engine matched with a high flow high pressure pump and separate cooling circuits from its brother, the SK190RTL.
The SK190TR is towable, nimble and versatile when needed. It is still using all the standard skid steer settings for the amount of attachments needed, yet is powerful enough to match or exceed 150 to 200 hp.
The SK190TR, with its dedicated closed loop high flow, high pressure system now completes the compact dedicated mulcher lineup within Supertrak’s product line. For more information, visit www.Supertrak.com.

Nonresidential Construction Spending
Up Slightly in Sept., According to ABC
National nonresidential construction spending was up by 0.5 percent in September, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of data published Nov. 1 by the U.S. Census Bureau. On a seasonally adjusted annualized basis, nonresidential spending totaled $883.9 billion for the month. Spending was down on a monthly basis in 11 of the 16 nonresidential subcategories. Private nonresidential spending was up 1.0 percent, while public nonresidential construction spending was down 0.3 percent in September.
“The disconnect between contractor confidence, which remains elevated according to ABC’s Construction Confidence Index, and nonresidential construction spending continues,” said ABC Chief Economist Anirban Basu.
“While nonresidential construction spending is below February 2020 levels, many contractors report operating at capacity. This has much to do with worker and equipment shortages.
“Many projects under construction in America began prior to the rapid increase in borrowing costs that started earlier this year,” said Basu.
“With interest rates on the rise and the economy expected to slow, nonresidential spending will likely decline further, at least in segments vulnerable to economic downturns. Contractors that focus on public construction work stand to be in far better shape given recent federal legislation and excess pandemic relief funds waiting to be spent by many state and local governments.”

Jim Umpleby to Continue as Caterpillar Chairman, CEO
Caterpillar Inc. announced that its board of directors has waived the policy requiring Caterpillar’s Chairman and CEO, Jim Umpleby, to retire at age 65. Umpleby has agreed to remain in his position beyond February 2023, when he turns 65.
“Waiving the mandatory retirement policy for Jim provides the board greater flexibility with its CEO succession process,” said Debra Reed-Klages, presiding director, speaking on behalf of Caterpillar’s board of directors.
“Jim has provided strong strategic and operating leadership for the company, and we look forward to his continued leadership of the Caterpillar team.”

YanmarIntroducesAGVSolution to Ga. Manufacturing Facility
Yanmar America Corporation has introduced an advanced automated guided vehicle (AGV) solution to its Adairsville, Ga., manufacturing facility.
The addition of the modular AGV system toYanmar’s Powerpack series generator production line has boosted production capacity ten-fold and increased the quality of products delivered to customers, according to the manufacturer.
“We brought Powerpack assembly inhouse to ourAdairsville facility as a way to offer more solutions and maintain high levels of product quality reaching the end user,” said Zach Morgan, a production engineer at Yanmar America. “Demand began to quickly increase, far outstripping the ability of the small cell that was originally constructed to support the effort.”
At this point, the team got together and came up with several potential solutions including conveyor systems, assorted carts, overhead cranes, and the current implementation — automated guided vehicles. The AGV solution was selected as being highly
capable, scalable, flexible and cost competitive. Also, the lead time, at two to four months, was significantly less than the conveyor implementation timeline of more than six months.
The system does not require in-depth programming knowledge or an automation engineer for implementation and can even be controlled through an app from the Google Play store.
Looking forward, Yanmar America’s AGV solution has the flexibility to grow with its business. The engineering team can easily change the path, extend, shrink, change shape or add additional stops or stations to accommodate demand and meet market requirements.
“As we continue to grow not only in Powerpack, but also in the rural lifestyle and other businesses, we’re taking a step back and reexamining our manufacturing approach,” said Scott Shorrock, director of operations at Yanmar America. “Yanmar is all about embracing change and taking on new challenges.”

Teichert, MCM Team Up for SR 70 Improvement Project
lane in the center); creating a continuous two-way left turn; widening the shoulders to 8 ft.; upgrading the existing drainage systems; and establishing an area for vehicles veering off the roadway to return to the main highway. The passing lane segment, between East Gridley Road and Lower Honcut Road, opened to traffic on Nov. 23, 2022.
The new 1,400-ft. long bridge over Honcut Creek will have two westbound lanes with 8-ft. wide shoulders. The existing bridges cover eastbound traffic.
“It’s a single-span bridge — the longest single-span structure that Caltrans has designed and built,” said Danny Warren, Teichert’s project executive. “We started with the foundation work in the middle and then worked towards one side and then the other based on the dimensions of the piles and the equipment that MCM needed to construct them and the foundations. Once the foundation work was complete, they did something similar for the deck pours.”
A fair number of piles were drilled.
“Not counting the abutments for the pier,” said Warren, “there were 14 foundation CIHD piles ranging from 100 to 150 feet deep, and some of them were eight and 10 feet in diameter. There were two abutments and each one had 12 24inch piles.”
The falsework included a temporary trestle constructed over the creek.
“It was set upon the field piles and on the floor off of the soffits of the bridge deck,” said Warren, who stressed that meticulous planning was required to construct the bridge with all of the challenges associated with the work.
Project Progress
At this point, the JV has made considerable strides work-wise, with Teichert constructing the road element and MCM building the bridge.
“MCM has made good progress,” said Warren. “The bridge deck is all poured out and they are working on stressing the deck over the next couple of weeks. Then they’ll work on wrapping up the abutment deck wall
and barrier walls on the bridge. Roadwork-wise, we’ve completed the drainage systems and just under three miles north of the roadway. We’re putting the touches on that and once it is complete, we will be able to move traffic across the new bridge so we can complete the last bit of the roadway surrounding the existing bridges for the current traffic pattern.”
Despite the fast-track nature of the schedule, crews are pushing forward.
“We got started in last September [2021] and we had to import fill, which was set back a little bit with some of the crazy rain events we had last year,” Warren said. “We got one in October that caused a little bit of flooding in the area and then we caught some more around Christmas that held it up, but we pushed through and we got a good early start on the work this season that allowed us to get three miles of new road built. We finished paving it in midNovember. Most of the work is taking place during the day, although there is some night work when we have to restrict traffic to one lane with flagging.
The new bridge has been built through a flood plain and there were some environmental timing restrictions that the contractor had to work around, according to Warren.
“Once the bridge is stressed, they can release the falsework and get out of the floodplain,” Warren said. “We did not really have any utility issues where we are working. There are very few existing utilities, save for Caltrans electrical wiring for lighting and intersections. We’ve modified these already.”
There are some giant garter snakes living in the project area which, according to Wikipedia, is “relatively rare, it is a semi-aquatic snake with a limited distribution in the wetlands of central California.” This led to some timing restrictions for the schedule.
“There also is an osprey nest adjacent to the project that posed a challenge,” said Warren, “but working with Caltrans environmental team and our biologists, we observed those and worked safely around those without disturbing their nesting period. We have a

good relationship with the Caltrans road construction team. We have successful quarterly partnering meetings and weekly progress meetings, which helps and provides full-time communications.”
Teichert and MCM have a good amount of room for the road work.
“We were essentially building three new lanes adjacent to the existing lanes, just west of them,” said Warren. “The bridge site is a little bit tight because we’re building a new bridge next to the existing three bridges, and then there is the environmentally sensitive area to the west of the bridge. The workspace is somewhat limited, but we managed to do what was needed to get it done.”
Road Work Construction
For the road work, traffic was shifted and K-rail was placed to separate traffic from the crews. Once the new lanes were built, traffic was shifted to allow crews
to reconstruct the existing lanes.
Teichert had one crew engaged in grading and earth work, a second crew that installed all of the drainage systems and a paving crew poured the asphalt.
“There was a lot of clearing and grubbing that had to take place prior to the earth work,” said Warren. “We had to import almost 90,000 cubic yards of fill material to build the new abutments and then we had another 50,00 cubic yards of roadway excavation — moving dirt around on-site to build the new roadway section. Then we imported about 100,000 tons of Class 2AB base rock for the road section and we placed 52,000 tons of dense grade asphalt and 20,000 tons of rubberized asphalt.”
The base section is 1.5 ft. and the asphalt topping is 9 in. The newly paved areas were ready to take traffic by the end of the shift. The excavated material was reused on-site.
Teichert is using mainly Cat equipment for the road work, which included a 14M motor grader, a skid tractor, 352 and 336 excavators, 815 and 825 pad drum rollers for compacting and D6 and D8 dozers for the maintenance builds. The motor grader and dozers were equipped with Trimble GPS systems.
The roadwork included new 8ft. wide shoulders on each side.
The drainage work had crews install corrugated metal pipe.
“Most of that is just across the highway,” said Warren. “There is a new drainage ditch on the left side of the highway. We brought in all the pipe at once, staged it there and we installed all the storm drain systems in two separate [phases].”
The area for vehicles veering off the roadway to return to the main highway was part of the safety improvements, along with the wider shoulders.
“It’s graded at two to one for a certain width for Caltrans to have a clear recovery zone that gives motorists time to recover should they veer off the highway or when mechanical failures occur,” said Warren. “That was all built up with grading work. We excavated the ditch, shaped the shoulders up and then built the roadway section, working from the outside in.”
The MCM and Teichert management teams worked well together.
“The dynamic of the two teams was very good,” said Warren. “We’ve been working together very well. Our work overlaps a little bit, so there is a lot of communication and coordination to keep us on track. There have been a few times when we helped each other out. We’ve had to borrow their forklifts once or twice and we moved some items for them. The efforts of both crews have been tremendous. They accomplished a huge amount of work in a very short period of time. The quality is excellent thus far and going really well.”
Peak days have had 40 to 50 people working on the bridge and more than 20 for the road work. Local and regional subcontractors were brought on board by both JV partners. CEG

Aside from the bridge, crews also are widening the existing twolane highway to five lanes (two lanes in direction, with a turning lane in the center); creating a continuous two-way left turn; widening the shoulders to 8 ft.; upgrading the existing drainage systems; and establishing an area for vehicles veering off the roadway to return to the main highway.

Hilltip Introduces IceStriker 6000CM Combi Spreaders
Hilltip is now offering its IceStriker combi spreaders in a 6 cu. yd. capacity, 12-in. pintle chain-drive unit. The new 6000CM model is the largest Hilltip model available in the North American market.
Along with the new size, Hilltip is adding chain-driven options for all other IceStriker combi spreaders, including the 2000, 2800, 3400 and 4200 models. Previously, these models were only offered as auger-driven machines. Hilltip is expanding the option to meet the preferences of all winter care professionals. The new 6000 model will only be offered in the chain-driven system at this time. Customers can expect all chain-driven models to be available for the 2021/2022 season.
Designed for ½-ton trucks and larger, the electric-powered IceStriker spreaders (12- or 24-volt dual motors) are now available in capacities of 2.0, 2.8, 3.4, 4.2 and 6.0 cu. yds. They not only offer the ability to spread granular salt, sand and gravel, but also can be transformed into a liquid deicing sprayer — either pre-wetting material as it’s spread or directly spraying brine to the driving surface for anti-icing applications.
Every IceStriker spreader features liquid tanks integrated into both sides of the double-walled poly hopper, which hold up to 220 gal. of liquid. By simply adding the optional prewet liquid kit, which includes a pump and spray nozzle, an operator can pre-wet spreading materials to help activate the salt as it’s spread and to reduce material bounce.
Furthermore, by adding the optional 6-ft. 7-in. dual spraybar, an operator can now spray brine directly onto the driving surface with a maximum 16-ft. spraying width. This makes
Designed for ½-ton trucks and larger, the electric-powered IceStriker spreaders (12- or 24-volt dual motors) are now available in capacities of 2.0, 2.8, 3.4, 4.2 and 6.0 cu. yds.
the spreaders ideal for all operations, whether they are just getting into liquid applications or are well experienced in brine.
The addition of a 40-ft. hose reel and hand-held spray nozzle allows for easier spraying in hard-to-reach areas, such as on sidewalks and steps. Also, an optional bladder tank increases the unit’s overall brine capacity to 550 gal.
All spreader and sprayer functions are operated using the advanced StrikeSmart controller. Featuring a detailed color screen, the controller allows operators to customize virtually every aspect of their spreading sessions, such as adjusting vibrator settings, blast settings and much more. Also, the controller allows for exact material feed and spreading width settings (between 2 and 40 ft.), and all systems can be calibrated from within the cab.
Using the GPS speed-control function, the spreader will automatically adjust the chain or auger speed depending on vehicle speed to achieve consistent material delivery, while the manual mode allows for setting a fixed speed.
The controller also automatically collects and saves essential data. Logging data 24 hours a day, seven days a week, this feature provides operators with spreading reports that can reduce potential liability issues. Accessory buttons are built into the controller, making the actuation of any standard
or optional accessories simple.
Another exclusive ability with the advanced controller is the optional adjustable spreading symmetry function. Typically only found on larger truck spreaders, this feature allows the operator to adjust the direction of material off of the spinner from the cab-mounted control. This is ideal when working in parking lots or when working on properties adjacent to other businesses, so the operator can ensure that material is only being directed onto a paying customer’s property and away from vehicles.
An easy-to-understand graphic indicates the current direction of the material, which can be easily adjusted with the integrated dial.
For maximum control and observation of an equipment fleet, all IceStriker spreaders come standard with Hilltip’s HTrack tracking software option. This allows for complete remote tracking and management of all spreaders from a computer, table or smartphone. One can monitor treatment routes, vehicle speed, GPS location and material usage in real-time.Also, the two-way GPRS communication channel allows application rates to be remotely set and adjusted for each customer’s site, depending on weather conditions.
Other standard equipment on the IceStriker combi spreader includes a sealed, weather-resistant motor enclosure, automatic vibrator, integrated tie-down loops, top screen and prerouted accessory wire for simplified light/rear camera installation. Auger models include an inverted-V structure over the auger drive to reduce heavy start-up loads on the feed mechanism.
Additional accessory options include an LED work light, strobe lights, illuminated license plate kit, rear and indicator lights, leg stand for more convenient storage/installation, end material alarm sensor on the spinner, tarp cover and an extended auger for axle loading optimization. One also can choose to get the hopper in orange instead of the standard gray color.

FluidAnalysisIDsProblemsEarly;KeepsMajorWoesatBay
“Perhaps nothing is so important and so often overlooked in machinery maintenance as fluid levels,” said Indianapolis, Ind.-based Caterpillar dealer McAllister Machinery. “Analyzing engine oil, fuel, coolant and hydraulic fluid tells an internal tale describing the health of your machine.”
These analyses also are indicators of maintenance effectiveness and predictors of potential failures, believes the company.
Why, How of Fluid Analysis
Fluid analysis detects problems early, so they can be repaired before they become major failures, said McAllister.
The process helps in scheduling machine downtime and in developing a complete service history for a machine. It improves the opportunity to get top dollar for used machines when the decision is made to offload older rigs through resale or trade-in.
“For maximum protection, you need oil sampling for all major oil-lubricated systems and coolant sampling for your cooling systems,” advised McAllister. “By pinpointing fluid troubles early, you can avoid shutdowns for unplanned repairs and even catastrophic failures.”
Hand in hand with fluid maintenance goes monitoring equipment condition. It should be an overall part of a contractor’s preventive maintenance plan, said the Caterpillar dealer.
Adedicated program of equipment condition monitoring helps prevent breakdowns and unnecessary repair costs that can rob a company of efficiency and profit.
McAllister’s list of key elements involved in the monitoring process includes advanced fluid diagnostic capabilities that allow the equipment manager to better assess the condition of a rig.
“Regular care and preventive maintenance of machines are priorities for heavy equipment,” said McAllister. “That includes routine machinery maintenance you do as the owner as well as outsourced maintenance with assistance by equipment professionals.”
Set Maintenance Schedule
An unexpected breakdown, forcing unscheduled maintenance, can be a huge crimp in a project schedule, especially if the machine plays a major role on the job site.
Poor equipment productivity due to downtime and neglect is a leading contributor to increases in unexpected project costs, believes Phillips66 Lubricants.
Approximately 800 to 900 productive hours annually is what a contractor can expect from a piece of equipment, according
to the company, based in Houston, Texas.
“Based on a 40-hour work week that translates at best to a productivity rate of only 62 percent,” Phillips said. “That means most pieces of heavy equipment have a productivity rate improvement window of nearly 40 percent, which can have a big impact” on the bottom line.
Phillips believes one of the easiest and most impactful ways to improve productivity is to adhere to a preventive maintenance schedule for each piece of equipment.
At the same time, a dedicated, fleet-wide preventive maintenance program reduces downtime and increases revenue.
“Preventive maintenance occurs on a predetermined schedule, regardless of whether the equipment shows problems operating or not,” according to Phillips. “It allows you to identify and address any defects before they can evolve into more expensive and largescale issues.”
Though maintenance tasks will be dictated by an equipment manufacturer’s recommendations and the vehicle itself, most rigs have engines that require similar checks, including:
• Engine oil: Use top quality engine oil and other lubricants, advised Phillips66.
“Although engine oil represents just a small fraction of your total maintenance costs, it can have a big impact on your bottom line.”
Skimping on quality or selecting the wrong type of engine oil can lead to more serious issues, costly repairs, longer downtime and lower productivity later on.
“Find the right high-quality oil for your vehicles and keep your equipment running smoothly.”
• Fluid levels: Check the coolant, transmission, brake, fuel and other fluid levels, advised the company. Frequent drops in fluids indicate a leak that must be identified and repaired.
“As with engine oil, make sure you are using correct type of high-quality fluids to prevent costly repairs.”
Among Phillips’ tips for extending the life of heavy equipment is to regularly maintain and service your machines with high-quality lubricants.
“Regularly inspecting and changing the oil and other lubricants is the most important part of preventative maintenance,” said the company.
Because the demands put on a lubricant vary greatly with different components and operating conditions, lubricants have significantly different physical and chemical characteristics.
That’s another reason consistent use of the correct oil maximizes the life and per-
formance of equipment. “Don’t top off with an incorrect oil for convenience,” said Phillips.
But using the right amount of lubricant matters too. Too little can increase the risk of friction and equipment wear, while too much can build up and cause performance issues.
Prevent Equipment Failure
As Phillips sees it, in an ideal world there would never be breakdowns and equipment would operate 100 percent of the time at 100 percent capacity.
“But in the real world, equipment failure happens. The business impact can range from minimal and easily fixed to catastrophic.”
A catastrophic failure happens suddenly and causes a rig to cease operation, not only damaging the machine, but causing collateral damage as well.
Equipment continues to operate during a functional failure, but it cannot function according to design specs and likely requires a shutdown to correct the problem.
Understanding the why behind equipment failure can prevent an occurrence. It’s your first line of defense against unexpected equipment downtime, said Phillips.
Surface degradation, consisting mainly of corrosion and mechanical wear of machine parts, results in equipment failure in 70 percent of cases.
Corrosion is particularly problematic in equipment operated in harsh climates or conditions where moisture, dirt or salt can contaminate components.
Water increases the speed at which oil oxidizes, which ultimately leads to the part operating within an acidic environment.
Corrosion of vital industrial parts is among the most common causes of equipment failure, said Phillips.
Mechanical wear — abrasive or adhesive — happens when machine surfaces mechanically rub against each other.
Abrasive wear occurs when particle contaminants, such as dirt or wear debris, cause metal surfaces to become pitted and scored.
Adhesive wear occurs when two surfaces come into direct contact with each other and transfer material from one surface to the other.
To prevent machinery failure caused by surface degradation, keep machinery and internal parts well lubricated and sealed particle contaminant ingress, said Phillips.
The company advises contractors to make sure equipment is well maintained and has parts regularly replaced.
“Also, keep it clean and stored in an appropriate place, and only allow it to be
operated by those trained to do so.”
Proper lubrication — using the correct type and amount of oil, grease and fluids — is integral to avoiding equipment failures and to keeping your business running smoothly.
One of the best ways to prevent corrosion and wear, lubrication also protects against heat and contamination and decreases noise in bearings.
“When equipment is properly and regularly lubricated, it has the highest chance of maximum service life,” according to Phillips.
Avoid Improper Greasing
Improper lubrication results from lack of procedures, over- or under-greasing, poor labeling, the wrong lubricant, mixing products and improper handling and storage.
“Without the right technician for the job or the correct procedure, improper lubrication may occur,” warned Phillips.
Over-greasing, the company said, leads to higher operating temperatures and aggressive machine contamination. While highly damaging under-greasing can cause noise, it can go unnoticed in a loud environment.
Correct labelling decreases the risk of cross-contamination and resolves confusion over which lubricants to use.
Applying the wrong lubricant can cause component failures and voids equipment warranty. Mixing products leads to component failures.
“Maintenance personnel need training on the correct ways of handling and installing bearings and using lubricants,” advised Phillips. “Even the most minute particles can enter a small dent and cause contamination.”
Key is implementing and adhering to documented lubrication procedures and making sure every technician is properly trained on them.
In fact, it is one of the most important things you can do to make sure your equipment is properly lubricated at all times.
Another critical step is integrating a labeling system and determining the output of grease guns while calculating the regrease requirements for bearings.
Doing so will avoid both over-and underlubrication, and is a great place to start the program, said Phillips66.
“Finally, check the owner’s manual to ensure that you are using the OEM-recommended lubricant for each piece of machinery.”
Consistently using the correct, high-quality lubricant “is the most important thing you can do to avoid costly equipment failures and to keep your equipment and your business running smoothly.”

WelchPlacesWinningBidforFelling’s2022‘TrailerforaCause’
Felling Trailers Inc. conducted its 10th annual online auction of an FT-3 drop deck utility trailer to benefit a non-profit organization: Eagle’s Healing Nest.Awinning bid of $7,752.00 won the auction that ended at noon on Aug. 27. The bid winner was Joe Welch of Caledonia, Minn.
Welch, an equipment dealer, has followed Felling Trailers’Trailer for a Cause auctions for a few years.
“This was the first auction I was able to catch before it closed. When I saw the cause, I really wanted to help support the Eagle’s Nest’s ‘Promises Made Promises Kept’ mantra. This is an exceptionally important mission they are undertaking that not only affects the people getting assistance by the entire community and the community of volunteers that assist in their cause,” said Welch.
With just six minutes left in the auction, Welch placed his bid of $7,752.00, winning the bid at the close of the auction.
A week after the auction had finished, Welch and his father, Jerry, anArmy veteran who served from 1955 to 1957, made the close to four-hour drive from Jerry’s home in Gilbert, Minn., to Sauk Centre to pick up the Patriot Blue, FT-3 Trailer for a Cause.
Once at Felling Trailers, they met with Felling Trailers’ owners Brenda Jennissen and Bonnie Radjenovich, along with Chris Senger, Felling Trailers’ senior material handler, who also is on Eagle’s Healing Nest’sAdvisory Board and a volunteer. Chris shared with Joe and his father how Eagle’s Healing Nest came to be nine years ago.
“The Nest is run by veterans and volunteers. Many of the vets who have moved on from the Nest still come back to visit and help. We currently have two to three new vets coming to the Nest each week needing to heal, with over 100 vets calling the nest home,” said Senger.
Welch shared with the Felling team that he had a proxy bid set of $10,000 and that he would be writing an additional check for $2,000 to be donated to Eagle’s Healing Nest.
“This was the right trailer, the right cause. Our veterans are very important. We need to take care of them,” said Welch.
“A very big thank you to you, the Felling family, and team members for all they do to help support their community. It’s organizations and people like you that go beyond what is expected and give back to our communities, helping them grow and prosper. I am very glad I could be a small part of this cause.”
Welch will be using the trailer for a little bit of fun hauling his side by side, but primarily for his busi-
ness, Joe Welch Equipment, selling used farm and industrial equipment.
“I am looking forward to people asking what the promises made promises kept means,” said Welch.
Along with his father, Jerry, Welch’s brother Bill served in the National Guard, and a very good friend Bob Hosch served in WWII.
“It’s important that we take care of our veterans however we can. Each person that steps up to volunteer and to help makes such a difference,” said Welch.
The 2022 Trailer for a Cause FT-3 utility trailer was painted a custom metallic “Patriot Blue” with chrome pinstriping and bared the Eagle’s Healing Nest’s emblem along with its credo “Promises Made. Promises Kept.” Several Felling Trailers’ suppliers joined to support Eagle’s Healing Nest by sponsoring the trailer build, from lighting to tires to decking.
The 2022 Trailer for a Cause sponsors were Trans-Texas, PPG, Dexter, Sealco, Peterson, Industrial Wood (Blackwood), Demco, Pacific Rim, and Metal Crafters/Flexco.
Felling Trailers wanted to generate awareness about the invisible wounds of war that our veterans carry and how Eagle’s Healing Nest helps them restore their honor, dignity, pride, and purpose. The online auction ran for six days, from Aug. 22 through 27 (during Eagle’s Healing Nest’s Annual Nest Fest), ending with Welch’s winning bid of $7,752.
One hundred percent of the $7,752, plusWelch’s additional proxy bid for a total of $9,752, will benefit Eagle’s Healing Nest.

DOT Officials Discuss Different Ice Melting Techniques
By Ruksana Hussain CEG CORRESPONDENT
Municipal ice melting techniques are varied, and different regional and state departments of transportation have fine-tuned their approach to include a combination of methods and materials depending on the amount of ice and snow their areas experience every winter. Solutions have included using salt, brine, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride and a few other alternatives, along with sand application for traction.
Salt has by far been the most used given its low cost and abundance, though the corrosion and contamination in the long term are cause for concern. But crews and technology have improved over the years to ensure effective results with lesser materials, better application using the latest equipment and more environmental awareness among teams.
Where other materials might lead to lesser corrosion and contamination, the availability and cost effectiveness has been a matter of debate. Nonetheless, using methods such as pre-wetting, de-icing and anti-icing alongside have helped DOT crews combat some of the most intense winter weather in recent years.
“We have 31 melters that we use during major storms, to melt snow in dense areas with narrow streets where piles of snow could become a safety issue,” said Vincent Gragnani, press secretary, NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY). “We work with the city’s Department of Environmental Protection to identify sewers that can accommodate large amounts of melted snow.”
DSNY clears snow and ice from New York City’s more than 19,000 lane-mi. of roadways and uses salt and brine to keep streets safer in winter storms. Salt spreaders are the first line of defense, used before a storm begins. Spreaders are loaded with a mix of rock salt and calcium chloride and pre-positioned to begin spreading at the first sign of frozen precipitation. While rock salt begins to lose effectiveness once temperatures dip below 24 F, the added calcium chloride increases the salt’s effectiveness, even at low temperatures. Depending upon
conditions, some locations that are more prone to earlier freezing may be pre-treated.
“In 2019, we piloted the use of liquid salt brine, which reduces the adhesion of snow and ice to the pavement, which can suppress snowfall accumulation, increase the effectiveness of DSNY’s plowing operations and provide greater traction to motorists,” said Gragnani. “When weather conditions permit, we pre-treat some roadways — entrances and exit ramps of major highways and other challenging locations — up to 24 hours in advance of a snowstorm. We have an anti-icing fleet of 30 vehicles, as well as seven brine storage tanks citywide, storing 9,800 gallons each, for a citywide total of 68,600 gallons.”
Pre-treating with liquid deicers has been practiced at Ohio DOT for quite some time now, Matt Bruning, press secretary, ODOT Central Office, said.
“We’re now increasing our application of liquid deicer on roadways during and after a snow event. The application rates can be as much at 80 gallons per lane mile, which is the equivalent of approximately 184 pounds of salt.”
The advantage of using liquids is it works faster and does not have the “bounce and scatter” as with rock salt applications. There is little waste, which helps the environment while saving costs.
“It also allows us to remove the snow and ice faster, thus reducing the number of cycles we have to travel,” said Bruning. “If we can keep the snow from bonding to the roadway, as soon as the snow stops falling and the winds are not blowing drifting snow, roads will be clear. The only drawback is maintaining a two-hour cycle time during the storm, which includes loading materials. If you cannot maintain the cycle time, you need to shorten your route distance or have a follow truck applying rock salt.”
ODOT has found that using semi-tankers is one of the best practices for application. A case study in northwest Ohio showed an average cost savings of 27.2 percent and dramatic reduction in post-storm cleanup time.
Pre-treating and de-icing also are common at Tennessee DOT.
“Whenever a wintry precipitation storm event is forecasted and one inch or less of rain is predicted prior to the wintry precipitation falls, we pre-treat roadways using a 23.3 percent salt brine [mixed with 10 percent calcium chloride] spread at 35 to 40 gallons per lane mile,” said Beth Emmons, director of community relations division. “If there is one inch or greater rain forecasted, we will spread rock salt at a rate of 100 pounds per lane mile as a pre-treatment. During the storm event we continue to utilize the same brine mixture or spread rock
salt at rates ranging from 250 to 400 pounds per lane mile depending on storm severity. Once temperatures drop below 25 degrees, we pre-wet the salt with calcium chloride at the spreader. Once a quarter-inch of wintry precipitation has accumulated on the roadway, we will plow to remove the precipitation by mechanical means.”
While solid salt, liquid deicer, sand and snowplows are all used by Oregon DOT depending on the winter weather experienced, Katherine Benenati, assistant communications director said, the goal is to maximize safety while minimizing the environmental effects each of the different winter toolbox tools can cause.
“Liquid magnesium chloride with corrosion inhibitor has proven to be an effective way to provide reasonably safe road surfaces in winter conditions. It is used before and during a storm to prevent ice and snow from bonding to the pavement.”
She added, “We use the lowest application rate at the right time and place to achieve the desired road conditions. To protect water quality, we only use deicers that meet strict quality specifications.”
When deicers are not cost effective (dependent on a variety of environmental and pavement variables), ODOT uses sanding material for better traction while driving.
“We use sand only when and where appropriate," she said. “We try to avoid applying sand to bare pavement to avoid bounce and scatter. We often pre-wet sanding material with liquid deicer to help it stay where we placed it and we place barriers to capture scattered sand along sensitive waterways.”
Some crews have experimented locally with agricultural byproducts as an effective solution that is inexpensive, environmentally safe and less corrosive in nature. For instance, North Dakota DOT has added BEET 55 as part of its arsenal for snow and ice control, aside from salt and salt brine. BEET 55 is an agricultural product derived from sugar beets that is blended with salt brine (80/20 ratio of salt brine to BEET 55).
“We have increased the amount of liquid storage and the number of tanks on snowplow trucks as a result,” said Barry.
