Rockland’s New Krypto Klaw Grapple Rake Gives Operators More Firm Grip
Combine the versatility of the Krypto Klaw with the land clearing abilities of an excavator rake, and you have yourself a Krypto Klaw grapple rake.
This new tool Rockland has added to its attachment arsenal allows operators to get a firm grip on large, bulky materials and debris using 100 percent of their excavator’s reach.
The dual cylinder clamp delivers more clamping force in all positions than any bucket thumb, making the Krypto Klaw Grapple Rake a much better alternative to a standard rake and thumb setup, according to the manufacturer. It provides better control and greater gripping power, plus users can quickly drop the entire attachment
when performing tasks that don’t require a clamp. In addition, installation is easy and costs are minimal because there is nothing to weld to the stick. Just pin on or connect with an excavator coupler. Then, connect the hydraulic fittings, and it’s time to get to work. Choose from two configurations: standard design with a cutting edge or equip with pin-on replaceable teeth of your choice. Rockland Krypto Klaw Grapple Rakes are made in the USA and backed by a no-nonsense, two year/4,000 hour warranty. For more information, call 800/458-3773 or visit www.rocklandmfg.com.

After 49 years in the foundation construction industry, Mike Elliott has announced his decision to retire.
Elliott started his construction career with Mississippi Valley Equipment in 1972. In 1987, he team up with partners Mark Rutland and Dick Nelson to buy out MVE’s Florida operations and established Pile Equipment Inc. When Nelson passed away in 1997, Elliott was named president of PEI.
Elliotts’s skills, knowledge and reputation in the foundation industry grew over the years, and the company flourished.
When Elliott and Rutland began looking for a succession plan for their business in 2014, ECA stepped in, and the companies merged in 2015. Elliott was immediately named vice president of ECA and branch manager of ECA Jacksonville.
“Mike has been a big factor in our expansion into the southeast, as well as a valued leader and mentor to many,” said Roy Kern Jr., ECA president/CEO.
Elliott’s retirement is effective Dec. 31, 2021, however he will remain on as a consultant.

Joining Forces… eBay, bidadoo Announce New Strategic Partnership
Building on a successful 18-year partnership, eBay — a global commerce leader that connects millions of buyers and sellers around the world — and bidadoo — an online remarketing and auction company of equipment, trucks and capital assets — announced a strategic partnership and investment.
The strategic partnership combines the powerful platform and global reach of eBay with the capabilities and experience of bidadoo.
“eBay is laser-focused on providing buyers with the best possible experience, including assurances and protections for big ticket, investment and alternate asset class purchases,” said Chris Prill, vice president of eBay Motors, North America.
“In the heavy equipment industry, which has rapidly transitioned from in-person transactions to online due to lockdowns, this is more important than ever. By harnessing the capabilities and experience of bidadoo — the largest industrial seller on the platform — eBay can offer end-to-end transactions that are more transparent and efficient, while boosting buyer confidence in their purchase without having to see an item in person.”
Globally, the used heavy equipment market is estimated to be $400B. This industry has seen the rapid adoption of online equipment marketplaces accelerated via the COVID-19 pandemic.
With live auctions events and in-personal sales sites shuttered during the pandemic, sellers have moved to the more efficient online model that doesn’t require the physical stockpiling and storage of equipment to create an auction event. Instead, sellers sell their equipment from where it sits, saving transportation costs. Buyers are flocking to the online model as they no longer have to physically to inspect equipment to make informed buying decisions.
Through this partnership, eBay and bidadoo will deliver industry-leading solutions for buyers and sellers by bringing together the core strengths of each company. To underscore the rapid online adoption, through Q3 of 2021, bidadoo has had a spike of more than 77 percent in onboarding new seller accounts through Q3, 2021 yearover-year. bidadoo brings specialized expertise in heavy equipment and truck remarketing. Through bidadoo, buyers have access used construction equipment from leading manufacturers, governments, rental companies, contractors and financial institutions, all supported by the bidadoo 100 percent guarantee and eBay’s Business Equipment Protection Program (BEPP).
Every bidadoo equipment listing includes a detailed condition report, photos and video demonstration. Every machine and truck is sold with the bidadoo 100 percent guarantee, providing for a full refund if a listing is not accurately represented. eBay’s Chris Prill elaborates on eBay’s and bidadoo’s shared objective to become the leading heavy equipment solution in the market.
“eBay is a leading destination for buyers and sellers worldwide and we’re doubling down on providing tailored solutions and value for each customer segment. This partnership accelerates our goal of better serving Business and Industrial (B&I) buyers and sellers by offering a single, trusted destination for the entire transaction.
“As eBay and bidadoo build on our 18 year relationship, we’ll expand marketplace offerings and hone existing ones to become the leading heavy equipment solution in the market.”
“We are excited to deepen our partnership with eBay to expand our remarketing and auction solutions,” said Howard Hawk, president of bidadoo.
“For over 18 years on eBay, bidadoo has been committed to delivering the best buying and selling experience in the industry. From day one, we chose to build our business on eBay. We share a DNA and similar vision: being passionately customer-centric and laser-focused on improving marketplace and e-commerce efficiencies. Beyond this, we are both centered around trust and transparency. This partnership and investment will enable us to bring new solutions and capabilities that will add significant value to our customers as we continue to grow our solutions and very passionate team.” bidadoo continues to grow and is accepting consignments across North America. bidadoo holds weekly online auctions every Tuesday, as well as its daily bidadoo Marketplace.

Construction of New Terminal Under Way at San Diego Airport
AIRPORT from page 1

Nineteen gates are expected to open in mid-2025. The old terminal will then be demolished and the remaining 11 gates should be finished by 2027.
Other early stage work includes utility relocation, a significant undertaking, said Sabrina LoPiccolo, airport spokeswoman. A 5,200-parking garage also will be built, as well as an elevated departure roadway similar to the one serving Terminal 2, which previously underwent a $1 billion redevelopment.
Preliminary work will begin on the new inbound roadway, which airport planners said will remove 45,000 vehicle trips per day from North Harbor Drive. And the following month, the contractor overseeing construction of a new taxiway and related airfield improvements will commence pavement removals and utility work, LoPiccolo said.
An outdoor deck off the future food hall will offer panoramic views of the harbor and downtown skyline. Nineteen gates are expected to open in mid-2025. The old terminal will then be demolished and the remaining 11 gates should be finished by 2027.
The San Diego Regional Airport Authority was notified Oct. 22 that the FAA had determined that the project could move forward, concluding that it “would not cause any significant environmental impacts that cannot be mitigated, and is the most reasonable, feasible and prudent alternative.”
That final hurdle cleared the way for construction on what is the single biggest undertaking in the airport’s history. The redo of Terminal 1, along with planned airfield improvements, is triple the cost of the $1 billion redevelopment of Terminal 2 eight years earlier.
The cell phone lot will be relocated in December and 500 parking spots in Terminal 1 will be eliminated in January.
The Turner-Flatiron team has completed previous work together at San Diego International Airport and at airports in San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento and Denver. The team brings together Flatiron’s experience in airside construction as well as runway and taxiway operations with Turner’s experience in airport terminal and concourse commercial structures.

System Transport Drivers Get ‘Experience of a Lifetime’

James Edward Mills photo
Santa and Mrs. Claus stopped by Williamsport, Md., to get a peak at the tree.
For six System Transport drivers, the opportunity to transport the 2021 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree from the Mad River Ranger District of the Six Rivers National Forest in California to Washington, D.C., was an experience of a lifetime.
“Christmas has always been such a special holiday to me and my family, so to spread the holiday cheer throughout the country was truly an honor,” said Jeremy Bellinger, who has driven 3 million miles over the course of his 21-year career with System Transport.
“I’ve been involved in transporting equipment to British Columbia for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and have hauled utility poles in response to wildfires in California, but being one of the drivers responsible for transporting the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree is truly the highlight of my career.”
System Transport, the official U.S Capitol Christmas Tree Tour carrier, selected driver Terry Jefferson and yard manager and former company driver Robert E. Lee to transport the special tree from the harvesting site through U.S. Forest Service roads. Other System Transport drivers, including Bellinger, Bill Brunk, Mike English and John Schnell Jr. (driver of James J. Williams Transport, a sister company of System Transport) split time hauling the 84-ft. White Fir U.S Capitol Christmas Tree from Northern California to Washington D.C., in the company’s new Kenworth T680 Next Generation.
The 2021 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Tour, which began Oct. 29 in Crescent City, Calif., featured 17 community celebration stops in towns, cities and national parks along the 3,300-mi. journey to Washington, D.C. The tree was delivered to the U.S. Capitol Building on Nov. 19.
According to Schnell, who split time driving the Kenworth T680 Next Gen with fellow driver English from Sacramento to Tulsa, Okla., the holiday spirit was on full display at the tour stops during their leg of the tour.
“The turnout at the tour stops, especially in small towns, was really something. To bring the holiday spirit to each of the stops and see so many people come out to participate in the celebrations was special,” said Schnell. “I’ve known about this tour for quite some time but never imagined I’d be one of the drivers involved. To have the opportunity to transport the Capitol Christmas Tree is something I’m proud of and is an experience I’ll always remember.”
For System Transport’s drivers, the tour was the first time each got behind the wheel of Kenworth’s latest addition to its Class 8 lineup, the Kenworth T680 Next Gen. The T680 Next Gen is Kenworth’s most aerodynamic truck to date and features the new customizable 15-inch digital display, latest Kenworth SmartWheel, signature LED lighting, and additional advanced driver assistance systems.
According to English, who drives a Kenworth T680 classic for System Transport, the technology inside the T680 Next Gen is what initially caught his attention when he stepped inside the cab for the first time.
“The new electronics, like the [Kenworth 15-inch] digital display, was something I grew fond of once I learned how to adjust the gauge settings to show the ones I wanted to appear on the screen,” said English. “The Next Gen offers a comfortable and enjoyable ride and is a step above the T680 that I drive regularly for System Transport.”
With prior experience hauling windmill blades and utility poles for System Transport, the drivers were prepared heading into the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Tour to handle the challenges of hauling a more than 100-ft. long trailer.
“It was difficult at times navigating some of the narrow streets along tour stops, but we all have plenty of experience hauling oversized equipment for System [Transport], so we were ready for it,” said Schnell.
Bellinger, who drove the last day of the tour and was responsible for delivering the Christmas tree to the U.S. Capitol, said he worked out a deal with Brunk for the opportunity. Bellinger and Brunk were responsible for hauling the tree from the tour’s first stop in Crescent City to Sacramento and again from Tulsa to Washington, D.C.
“I have some family in D.C., and planned on flying my family out from Washington [state] to see us deliver the tree to the Capitol, so I wanted to be the one behind the wheel when the tree arrived,” said Bellinger. “The deal was, if I got to drive the truck to the Capitol, Bill [Brunk] would drive the truck over the Golden Gate Bridge. It was a win-win. It was an incredible experience to be involved in this tour and celebrate the holiday season with my family at the end of it.”
The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree lighting ceremony will be held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol Building on Dec. 1.
