Flatiron crews are making significant progress on the $54 million State Route 20 Timbuctoo Roadway Project taking place a half-mile east of the Yuba River in eastern Yuba County, Calif.

The project, financed by state and federal dollars, began last February, with delivery anticipated in September 2021. Flatiron is ahead of schedule with a projected winter 2021 final construction.

The initiative is upgrading a 2-mi. section of SR 20 from the Yuba River Bridge to approximately 1/3-mi. east of Smartsville Road, as well CEG CORRESPONDENT

as straightening curves on a section of the highway, widening segments of highway to create uniform 12-ft. wide lanes and shoulders to a standard 8-ft. width, constructing a new bridge on the realigned section of highway and increasing sight distances for motorists traveling on the highway.

In essence, the current two-lane highway, in an isolated hilly area with forests on either side and power lines and electrical infrastructure on both sides, is being widened by one lane in each direction with shoulders and intermittent passing lanes. see TIMBUCTOO page 14

Balfour Beatty, as part of the LAX Integrated Express Solutions joint venture team, completed an important milestone in the delivery of Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX) Automated People Mover (APM) by placing concrete for the first segment of the 2.25-mi. elevated guideway and completing structural

steel erection activities for the Maintenance and Storage Facility (MSF). When complete, the project will play a key role in delivering a longterm transformative transportation solution that eases traffic congestion, provides reliable access to airline terminals and brings jobs and opportunities to the Los Angeles community.

Like most companies adapting to these challenging times, Wacker Neuson shifted its annual in-person dealer meeting into the digital world. Construction Under Way on Solar Plant in Pinal County Salt River Project (SRP) and sPower, a leading renewable energy Independent Power Producer (IPP), announced construction is under way on “East Line Solar,” a new solar plant which will bring $10 million in 25 years of tax revenue and up to 350 construction jobs to Pinal County. “Concrete placement for the first segment of guideway represents the latest achievement in a series of significant critical construction milestones for our team,” said Sharon Gookin, project director at LINXS Constructors. “It is exciting to see our team’s hard work and effort has come together in a visually demonstrative way.”

An estimated 72,000 cu. yds. of concrete will be used to construct the entire guideway which includes foundation piles, columns, guideway deck and concrete tracks. A significant construction milestone for the LAX AMP project, approximately 304 major concrete placements will be delivered for the entire APM system which will lead the way for the construction of the system’s concrete tracks and the steel erection of the future APM stations.

To reach the structural milestone on the MSF, 1.5 million lbs. of steel were used to vertically erect the main, mezzanine and train wash buildings. With roofing installation underway, the 90,000-sq.-ft. facility will be built to LEED Gold standards and will incorporate several sustainable design elements including a solar photovoltaic generation system, and an onsite train wash that will use recycled water.

The MSF will be complete in 2021 in anticipation for the first APM train car deliveries. The APM electric train system will connect LAX passengers to airline terminals, a rental car facility, a parking facility and the Metro’s regional transit system. 

Volvo CE Boosts Uptime With QuickFit Engine Assurance From RPM Industries Oil changes are one of the most time-consuming routine maintenance activities, and also high risk for environmental and safety hazards.

The QuickFit Engine Assurance Program, offered exclusively through Volvo CE, shortens downtime by more than 50 percent per preventive maintenance service event, according to the manufacturer. It is coupled with a zero-spill, $10,000 guarantee and catastrophic engine coverage for up to eight years or 12,000 hours.

With the QuickFit system from RPM Industries, oil changes can be performed in the field or shop. It uses a ground-accessible, single service point for full oil and filter changes. The system is available for the engine, transmission and hydraulics with one fitting per compartment.

Technicians can complete an oil change service in less than 30 minutes with the system in place, according to the manufacturer. It eliminates ergonomic and safety issues caused by crawling under and around the machine, as well as the need for cumbersome pans.

The QuickFit technology also removes the threat of hot oil burns and spills from pans or filters.

Lowering the standard time for preventive maintenance by more than 50 percent allows for higher machine availability. Technicians can shift their focus during the service window to machine inspection and identifying and correct-

ing issues that could lead to future downtime. Beyond the environmental benefit of no spills, the system also reduces waste consumables like gloves, rags and buckets.

Customers can enroll in the program through a repair maintenance agreement (RMA) with their local Volvo dealer. Once enrolled, customers own the QuickFit system for the life of the machine, and both system and engine warranty are transferrable with the machine for higher residual value at resale.

“This program extends our commitment to customer uptime. Our dealer technicians can be proactive during the service while also improving the work environment with a focus on safety. When coupled with a repair maintenance agreement, customers can secure uptime in a proactive and planned way,” said Ken Silverman, director, aftermarket sales at Volvo CE. The QuickFit Engine Assurance Program is currently available for a range of Volvo excavators, articulated haulers, medium-large wheel loaders and compactors.

Machines can be ordered with the system factory-fitted or installed pre-delivery by their local Volvo dealer. Customers with existing Volvo equipment also can participate in the program and have their machines retrofitted.

Flatiron Crews Encounter Big Challenge Blasting Rocks TIMBUCTOO from page 1

“The primary challenge was the topography and site geology,” said Resident Engineer Aaron Chamberlin. ”Large amounts of hard rock were encountered that required controlled blasting to be conducted.

The design and construction needed to balance the roadway geometrics with environmental, land use and physical constraints.

Roadways are designed with a 50-year life, structures are built for 100 plus year life. The construction is one of the first in the state to heavily utilize unmanned aerial systems [UAS] for the inspection and measurements of earthwork. The structure design is a standard cast-in-place box girder structure. This design minimizes construction costs and maintenance over the life of the structure.”

Project Challenges Flatiron’s Project Manager, Charles Marrow, indicated that crews encountered challenges when it came to the rough terrain.

“We didn’t get back onto the grade until mid-April, once the weather cleared up a little bit,” said Marrow. “The clearing operation had challenges due to the hilly undulating terrain that is a signature of this region.

“The biggest challenges on this job were the rock excavation and of understanding how much rock blasting we would have,” added Marrow, “and also being able to accommodate that work and schedule impact, because that was done by Edick & Watt, a subcontractor. We had to coordinate that with our dirt moving operation. It’s kind of a dance – we can’t blast as fast as you can move the material and so we had to pick and choose when and where they would blast.

It’s a very expensive operation moving the dirt/rock – $40,000 to $50,000 a day. Any day that you lose can hurt your project’s bottom line, so we performed some additional rock blasting quantity investigations beyond what Caltrans provided us as far as rock and seismic refraction tests.

“We paid our blaster on a force account basis to do some test holes to determine where the metamorphic greenstone rock was and at what elevation,” Marrow continued.

“This let us know where the rock is and how much no-rock laden dirt we could move. We built our schedule on this information.

There’s a metamorphic formation in the Smartsville area, right next to the Yuba River Bridge, and there’s a quarry across the river from us – the Nordic Quarry. The rock is very hard, some at as much as 30,000 psi.”

The rock can be tough on the equipment.

“You can blast it, but you still have to deal with large boulders and we went through tons of ripping teeth and breaker tips,” said Marrow. “It’s a rough job and you have to make sure that you take excessive equipment wear and tear in your estimation

process.”

The drill team – Hillside Drilling Inc. – used a hammer and steel drill rig with a down-hole hammer clusterhead-type of drill that is designed for drilling through very hard rock at the bridge site.

“The clusterhead drill really did the trick when it was running well,” said Marrow. “It was very tough drilling and there were mechanical issues. They used the right piece of equipment, but it was just very finicky.”

hilly and steep ravines,” said Marrow. “Our strategy was to spend money and direct efforts upfront and create some good access for the bridge site. A lot of the other contractors that bid this job planned on using driven pile, because traditionally that is what you do when building falsework in a ravine and don’t have the luxury of building it on a pad.

As we were self-performing the dirt work, we also created our own access to bridge the construction site, which has allowed us to build it more efficiently.”

The bridge is 800 ft. long and 60 ft. wide, with one lane in each direction, with an additional passing lane in the East uphill direction.

The project was not able to utilize scrapers due to rocky conditions.

Approximately 280,000 cu yds. were removed, with approximately one-third of that quantity requiring blasting. All of the material has been utilized on-site for the embankment construction.

“When we dug out a section of a hill, we had to move the soil to the most efficient location to build a fill area in which the new highway is placed on,” said Marrow. “This project is designed to be a balanced job and we connected all the dots. Caltrans, when they design and build highways and freeways, always strives for that because the taxpayer benefits by having more efficient construction.”

Building the cast-in-place concrete box girder bridge that is tall and has equally tall falsework, is no easy task.

“It’s in a section of the project with very

(CIDH), some shafts being as deep as 90 ft. and others as shallow as 30 ft.

“That operation wrapped up at the end of June and in July we started building the substructure and columns and we’re now working on the falsework and soffits for the superstructure,” said Marrow. “So far it’s going really well.”

Sitech automated guidance systems (AMG) were placed on some of the dirt moving equipment. This AMG technology allows an operator to perform the equipment operation, but also the grade control all at the same time.

“We developed a site model and outfitted certain pieces of equipment with survey heads on the blades, which allowed us use fewer survey people on the grade,” said Marrow. “This eliminated the safety issue of having personnel moving out and around equipment, and also reduces our costs because now you don’t have to carry additional grade setters.”

In addition to earth work, Flatiron started all the permanent road work.

“We’re still not done with it, but are very glad that we started it when we did,” said Marrow, who noted that early on, Flatiron knew that PG&E had to relocate some power lines and AT&T some communications lines. “They didn’t end up impacting us, but it was something that was a little too close for comfort. PG&E had some poles in the way of the new highway and they had to move. About two or three weeks ago we achieved a majority of the hot mix paving.

Nearly half of the eastern side of the paving has been finalized — we’re going to do a final striping and install all final bells and whistles soon.”

Drainage upgrades are an important part of the work for the stretch of highway in which some components were last updated in 1939.

“There might have been drainage system improvement over the years, but a lot of this old corrugated metal pipe gets corroded over the years,” said Marrow, “so when you do a project like this, you always want to upgrade or replace systems because you’re changing the hydrology of the highway and the hills. Here we have about 40 drainage systems that have to be upgraded or replaced.”

Another challenge is to meet the many benchmarks before the end of 2020 as possible.

“We know the weather in the foothills does not always agree with construction work,” said Marrow. “It was quite a push on our part – a lot of long hours and work on Saturdays, the schedule we gave ourselves was aggressive and the efforts of the rock investigators helped. We had some good luck, but it’s also because of the execution of team out here – we were able to set those high goals and hit them.”

Peak days have had approximately 55 people on-site, with the main subcontractors being Hillside Drilling Inc. for the CIDH piles; Pacific Steel Group for reinforcement install; Green Vista for temporary and permanent erosion control; Teichert Construction Inc. for HMA paving; Nevada Barricade and Sign Co. for metal beam guardrail installation; and Roll ‘N Rock Construction for traffic control.

When done, new materials should include 10,000 tons of concrete, 25,000 tons of asphalt and 643 tons of reinforcing steel.

Equipment on-site also includes: a Manitowoc 4000W and a Grove 90-ton cranes; Cat 390F and Komatsu PC490 LC excavators; a Cat 966 loader; a Cat 825 compactor; and various 4,000 –gal. water trucks.

Making Headway on Houghton Road Project

An entirely new kind of traffic interchange for southern Arizona will start to take shape. Local construction crews, along with the Arizona Department of Transportation, have been working on a project to improve access to Interstate 10 at Houghton Road.

The new $24.4 million interchange — an innovative design called a diverging diamond — will improve safety and traffic flow in a rapidly growing area of Pima County east of downtown Tucson.

The diverging diamond design has a major difference from the existing standard diamond interchange in place today: Traffic on Houghton Road will make a temporary shift to the left side of Houghton Road while crossing the freeway. This allows for left turns onto entrance ramps without waiting at an additional traffic signal. The design promotes safety because

drivers turning left don’t cross traffic while entering the onramp.

Traffic engineers chose this design because it can handle higher traffic volumes in the growing southeast Tucson area, where traffic is expected to increase by as much as 50 percent by 2045.

The new Houghton Road bridge will feature six lanes of traffic, compared with two lanes on the existing structure.

Also, the project will improve access for pedestrians and bicyclists. ADOT has developed a construction plan that minimizes traffic impacts by building the new Houghton Road bridge while traffic continues to use the existing structure.

During the first week of construction, traffic impacts were minor as crews began clearing areas in the work zone and mobilized equipment.

The entrance ramp from Houghton Road to eastbound I-10 and the exit ramp from westbound I-10 to Houghton Road have closed, and will stay closed for nearly three months. The full closures of the two ramps will allow crews to reconstruct the ramps in one phase. Traffic will be detoured to the Colossal Cave/Wentworth Road interchange.

The project is scheduled for completion in late 2021.

More than 115 diverging diamond interchanges are in use in the U.S. as of mid-2020, including two half-diverging diamond interchanges on the Loop 202 South Mountain Freeway in Phoenix. A full diverging diamond interchange is scheduled to open at Interstate 17 and Happy Valley Road in Phoenix later this year.

Rockster Duplex-System Crusher Conquers Casablanca Since February 2020, the Rockster R1100D impactor with screen box and return belt has been creating valuable aggregate for CSB Mobile. The easy handling and good performance of the crusher as well as the possibility of processing various materials were key criteria for the purchase.

CSB Mobile S.A.R.L., with its headquarters in Casablanca, is a reliable specialist in earthworks. With 10 employees and a machine fleet of three bulldozers, three excavators and one flatbed truck, it can cover a wide range of contracts from roadbed preparation all the way to quarry stone mining.

Expansion of Business Field With a Mobile Crusher Since one of the CEOs of CSB is from Ukraine, he got in touch with Rockster’s Russian dealer Maksim Perminov, who offered him a range of possibilities. CSB wanted to put more emphasis on demolition, recycling as well as quarry stone mining and one of the key requirements was a crusher with large inlet opening and a good performance.

“I recommended them a track-mounted Rockster R1100D impact crusher because the handling of this hydrostatic driven machines is quite simple and the output is remarkable,” said Perminov.

The main benefit of the hydrostatic drive is the constant crushing performance due to the continuous adjustment of the hydrostatic pressure to the power requirements of the

crusher. This leads to a noticeably reduced diesel consumption per ton of production. An additional benefit of having a crusher with hydrostatic drive is reduced wear costs in comparison to a conventional clutch system.

Duplex Creates More Flexibility Another reason why CSB Mobile chose this Rockster crusher was the Duplex-system. The R1100D is Duplex-able and can be quickly modified from an impact to a jaw crusher and vice versa. This allows the customer to achieve maximum machine utilization and rapidly adapt to different job requirements. Besides concrete and asphalt, the CSB Mobile also crushes gravel, sand and different types of hard rock.

Water Reservoir in Mohammedia Water is a rare and therefore valuable commodity in Morocco. So, one of the first projects for the R1100D impact crusher was to process 10,000 cu m of gravel that comes from a pit under a water storage reservoir in Mohammedia near Casablanca. Gravel is a rather abrasive stone that includes pure iron ore with a high specific gravity weighing up to 2.8 kg/cu m. The size of the loaded material was up to 1000 mm, the final fraction 0 to 40 mm is called “GNF”.

It usually contains 10 to 15 percent soil, but due to Rockster’s prescreen in combination with the side discharge belt, CSB receives a very high-quality end product that they can sell for about 70 to 90 Dirham ($7 to $9 USD).

Mobile Crusher in the Sand Quarry To crush heavily compressed sand in a sand quarry was a second, very different task for a Rockster impactor. The sand is excavated with a vibro-ripper from an extremely strong quarry wall.

“This ripper produces solid lumps of sand. Then the excavator loads lumps into the crusher with a 5 mm screen, and we get great sand,” said CSB owner Lurii Lisnichenko.

With the screening system mounted onto the crusher it is easy to produce an exact defined final grain size in one pass.

In Morocco, sand obtained from a quarry is a product of high demand. The cost can range from 100 to 110 Dirham per cu m ($10 to $11 USD) and it is sold directly from the quarry.

Easy Transport The mobility of the machine is a very important factor in Morocco. Most importantly for working directly on a job site or where a material extraction takes place. The customer can put the crusher on his own flatbed truck and transport it anywhere depending on the job.

Flexibility not only plays a role when it comes to moving the crusher but also it expands customer’s mobility in taking on jobs that were previously not possible. In that case the size and weight of the crusher also are very important in combination with its performance. 

Cedarapids Unveils MJ55 Jaw Module for Large Quarry Operations Designed around its JW55 jaw crusher, the Cedarapids MJ55 modular jaw crusher is designed for large quarries or contractors that want a stationary type design without the complexity of a normal stick-built plant.

The module combines the JW55 jaw crusher, sloped hopper, Cedarapids 52x20 feeder and straight line conveyor on a galvanized steel structure.

The standard structure can be transported in standard shipping containers plus a flat rack for the crusher and can be bolted together quickly on site with basic tools.

The three configurations offered for the feed hopper allow for the optimum size to match up to the equipment that is being used to load the machine.

Manufacturer Sees Enormous Potential for Tiltrotators Although the tiltrotator phenomenon has been around for over 30 years, more than 97 percent of the world’s excavators still don’t have one.

This is despite the fact that it streamlines digging and turns the excavator into an allround multi-tool.

The concept is well established in the Nordics and through Engcon the tiltrotator has gradually extended its reach globally.

Excavators recognize the flexibility and efficiency the tiltrotator brings, improving profitability, enhancing safety and reducing the environment impact, according to the manufacturer.

For a very long time the tiltrotator has been relatively unknown outside the Nordics. Due to Engcon’s communication work sharing information via its website, trade shows, advertising, press releases, articles, social media and influencer marketing, the concept has become a global phenomenon. At this year’s ConExpo it became clear that many attendees were aware of the phenomenon and familiar through articles and videos of how it helped excavators work smarter, according to Engcon.

“From the fact that the excavator previously only dug a pit, new accessories have developed the excavator into a multi-tool that can dig, lift, pack, sweep. Most contractors want to be able

to take on more jobs and solve them faster and smarter to make more money. We believe that the tiltrotator is the key to that,” said Krister Blomgren, CEO of Engcon Group.

Change World of Digging Engcon has been working with its motto “Change the world of digging” for a long time and decided in 2020 to also use it as its vision.

“That is exactly what we want to do in the long run. If we can get more excavators to be equipped with a tiltrotator, digging will be more profitable, efficient, flexible, environmentally friendly and also safer. We are simply changing the digging world,” said Blomgren.

Only 2 to 3 percent of the world’s excavators today have a tiltrotator, which means that there is an enormous development potential for streamlining the industry and making it more environmentally friendly by using less resources in the form of materials, fuel and time.

“To invest in a tiltrotator is to invest in the future and we believe that it is only a matter of time before it expands in larger markets like the USA. It is simply impossible to ignore the tiltrotator’s advantages,” Blomgren said.

When installing an underground conductor, precautions must be taken to ensure the integrity of the material being paid out.

The application the trailer would be used for would require the ability to transport three reels, each equipped with a tensioning brake system that could be operated by one person from a centralized location.

The trailer also would need to have a fifth-wheel style hitch with air brakes.

Trauma Safety Strap Enhances Fall Protection for Construction Workers

A trauma safety strap that attaches to a harness construction workers wear on the job enhances fall protection for workers.

3M of St. Paul, Minn., the company that makes the Fall Protection Suspension Safety Strap, is now including it with all harnesses it sells.

“We’ve gotten feedback from frontline workers, so we’re making it a standard feature on every harness,” Tim Thompson, a 3M global marketing manager said.
