HOLT CAT hosted the 2018 Antique Caterpillar Machine Owners Club (ACMOC) National Show, but that wasn’t all — the longtime respected Cat dealer also celebrated its 85th anniversary with an employee event and showcased its recently completed spacious and state-of-art headquarters. ACMOC in San Antonio … It Just Made Sense The antique Caterpillar show’s setting and its host proved to be the most logical choices, outside of Peoria. “Our father and grandfather have always been collectors, so we have a long history of going to these shows,” said Peter J. Holt, CEO and general manager of
HOLT CAT’s new headquarters building in San Antonio, Texas. The company is the largest Caterpillar dealer in the United States.

HOLT CAT. “A couple of years ago a few of our employees became very engaged in ACMOC and wanted to bring a chapter to San Antonio. So we got the chapter started and got further involved and it just became a natural direction to have a show here. And then with almost divine timing it worked out that it was our 85th anniversary and we had just built our new headquarters. CDOT SELECTS STERLING JV FOR $200M I-25 PROJECT
The project will be constructed under Reclamation's Safety of Dams Program, and Midvale Irrigation District will be responsible to repay Reclamation up to 15 percent of the project cost.
Upon successful completion of design finalization and execution of the CMGC contract, the project is estimated to exceed $200 million and is expected to begin construction in mid-2019.
The new bridge will be the 12th pedestrian bridge along the Strip. It will be less than a block away from other pedestrian bridges. The county said safety was the main reason behind the project.

Feds OK Oil, Gas Production Facility in Federal Waters U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke announced on Oct. 24 a long-awaited development for oil and gas energy production offshore the state of Alaska. Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) issued conditional approval to Hilcorp Alaska LLC for its Liberty Project oil and gas development and production plan. If developed, the facility would be the first oil and gas production facility in federal waters off Alaska. Hilcorp proposes to build a 9acre artificial gravel island in the shallow waters of the Beaufort Sea, about 20 mi. east of Prudhoe Bay and about 5 mi. off the coast. The facility would be similar to the four oil-and-gas-producing artificial islands currently operating in the area’s state waters: Spy Island, Northstar Island, Endicott Island and Oooguruk Island. “Working with Alaska Native
stakeholders, the Department of Interior is following through on President Trump’s promise of American energy dominance. Today we’re announcing approval of the Hilcorp Liberty Project, which if completed, will be the first production facility ever located in federal waters off Alaska,” said Zinke. “American energy dominance is good for the economy, the environment and our national security. Responsibly developing our resources, in Alaska especially, will allow us to use our energy diplomatically to aid our allies and check our adversaries. That makes America stronger and more influential around the globe.” BOEM used a rigorous evaluation process based on the best and most recent science available to evaluate the safety and environmental impacts of the Liberty

Project. The plan was conditionally approved only after incorporating input from the public, and from North Slope communities and tribal organizations. As the project moves forward, BOEM will continue to work with Hilcorp to ensure all appropriate safeguards are stringently applied. Approval conditions include: restricted drilling into the hydrocarbon-bearing zone, which may occur only during times of solid ice conditions; seasonal restrictions on
activities and vessel traffic to reduce potential disturbance to Cross Island subsistence whaling activities; and obtaining all required permits from other state and federal agencies. “There are already four other gravel-island facilities off the North Slope, and we consider Hilcorp’s plan to represent a relatively conservative, time-tested approach toward offshore oil and gas development,” said Joe Balash, the Department of the Interior’s
assistant secretary of Land and Minerals Management. “Using input from North Slope communities, tribal organizations, and the public, we have developed a robust set of environmental mitigation measures and safety practices that will be applied to this project.” In August, BOEM published an Environmental Impact Statement that examined the potential environmental impacts of Hilcorp’s proposal, and looked at a range of alternatives. Today’s announcement follows publication of the Record of Decision issued by the Department of the Interior. BRC Awards $44M Contract Crews Begin Work on New for Bull Lake Dam Project Vegas Strip Pedestrian Bridge The Bureau of Reclamation awarded a $446 million contract on Sept. 20, 2018 to Malcolm International LLC, of Rancho Cordova, Calif., for construction services at Bull Lake Dam in Fremont County, Wyo. Safety of Dams construction activity began in the fall of 2018 and end in the summer of 2021. “The Bull Lake Dam spillway project is necessary to address deficiencies in the existing spillway and provide for the continued safety and functionality of Bull Lake Dam,” said Carlie Ronca, Wyoming area manager. Construction activities will include the construction of a temporary access road for construction traffic; construction of cofferdams; construction of a new concrete spillway structure; removal of the existing spillway; and replacing the existing spillway with a section of earthen dam embankment. The project will be constructed under Reclamation's Safety of Dams Program, and Midvale Irrigation District will be responsible to repay Reclamation up to 15 percent of the project cost. The existing road for recreational access to Bull Lake Reservoir for tribal members and those with Wind River Indian Reservation recreational or fishing permits will not be affected by the construction.

Bull Lake Dam is located in the Wind River Indian Reservation in central Wyoming. It is on Bull Lake Creek, a tributary of the Wind River. Bull Lake Dam was constructed from 1936-1938, is owned by Reclamation and is operated and maintained by Midvale Irrigation District. Water stored in Bull Lake provides a supplemental irrigation water supply to approximately 70,000 acres served by Midvale Irrigation District. LAS VEGAS (AP) Construction has begun on a new pedestrian bridge on the Las Vegas Strip. KLAS-TV in Las Vegas reports workers broke ground on the project on Oct. 22. The new bridge will allow pedestrians to cross Las Vegas Boulevard between the Park MGM and the Showcase Mall. Clark County officials said it will help improve traffic flow when people leave
events at the T-Mobile Arena. The new bridge will be the 12th pedestrian bridge along the Strip. It will be less than a block away from other pedestrian bridges. Building to Resume on Okla. American Indian Museum OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) Construction is expected to resume in January on the longdelayed American Indian Cultural Center and Museum in Oklahoma City. Blake Wade, CEO of the Native American Cultural and Educational Authority that is building the museum, told The Oklahoman that the fund to finish construction has $50 million. That includes $25 million in stateissued bonds, $16 million in private donations and $9 million from Oklahoma City.
The museum began as a state project and spent about $90 million from 2006 until 2012. The exterior of the museum was almost done when money ran out. Legislators passed the responsibility of the museum from the state to the city in 2015. The museum is slated to open in 2021. For more information, visit newsok.com. MDT Submits Bridge Improvements, Paving Project Details The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is notifying the public and seeking comment on two projects. One project implements improvements on bridges near Wolf Creek in Lewis and Clark County. The second project involves a paving project along 11.8 mi. of highway in McCrone County. Bridges Near Wolf Creek The project includes two bridges at the Wolf Creek Interchange (Exit 226) on Interstate 15 and the Little Prickly Pear Creek bridge on Walsh Street in Wolf Creek. Proposed work includes bridge deck milling and overlays on the interstate bridges and replacing the bridge deck on the Little Prickly Pear Creek bridge. Bridge rail modifications also are within the scope of the project. The project is tentatively scheduled for construction in 2020, depending on completion of all project development activities and availability of funding. CDOT Selects Sterling JV for I-25 Project Sterling Construction Company Inc. announced that its subsidiary, Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction Company LLC and its joint venture partner, SEMA Construction, have been selected by the Colorado Department of Transportation to design and perform the reconstruction work on I-25 in Weld and Larimer counties in Colorado. Upon successful completion of design finalization and execution of the Construction Manager/General Contractor (CMGC) contract, the project is estimated to exceed $200 million and is expected to begin construction in mid-2019. The project will entail the widening of a stretch of Interstate 25 in the vicinity of Mead, approximately 35 mi. north of Denver between SH-66 and the SH-402 Interchange. Sterling and SEMA will expand the highway from two lanes in each direction to accommodate two general purpose lanes and one express lane in each direction. In addition to the roadway widening, all interchanges within the project limits will be rebuilt, which includes replacing the existing bridges. PCL Names Pres., COO of U.S. Ops PCL Construction welcomes Deron Brown to the role of president and chief operating officer, U.S. Operations. Brown takes over responsibility for PCL’s U.S. buildings and civil operations from Shaun Yancey, who will retire in February 2019. Since then the family business has evolved into the Caterpillar dealership of HOLT CAT today that is based in San Antonio.” Among the many fun activities over the course of the three-day ACMOC event included an antique equipment display, a machine demo area, merchandise, food & entertainment and a daily machine parade. This included a wooden model Holt Manufacturing combine from 1910 and a Cat Experimental 20 from the 1927 World’s Fair. A New Holt Leadership Team Peter J. Holt and his sister, Corinna Holt Richter, assumed leadership [HOLT CAT] on January 2018 and both were well positioned to take the helm of the company. Corinna Holt Richter is president and chief administrative officer of HOLT CAT. She has a formidable list of responsibilities. Holt Richter leads the administrative and support divisions at HOLT, including human resources, safety and environmental, information technology, organizational development, facilities management, continuous improvement, legal, marketing and strategy. She is the great-great granddaughter of Benjamin Holt, who introduced the first practical track type tractor in 1904, which he named the Caterpillar. She represents the fifth generation of the Holt family business and is now leading the Holt legacy of service and innovation into the 21st century. AQ4XL Makes Quick Work of Difficult Rock Conditions The production goal for the contractor in Knoxville, Tenn., was to lay five 20-ft. sections of pipe per five-day work week. The site required a trench to be dug through dense limestone rated between 16,000 and 22,000 psi. The contractor tried many other conventional trenching methods, but none of them were able to keep up with production goals and keep project costs in line with the budget. With a hydraulic breaker, for example, it was a struggle to lay one 20-ft. length of 36-in. diameter pipe in a week, far short of the five sections goal required. Antraquip Site Analysis and Proposal The contractor reached out to his local Antraquip’s dealer in Tennessee in search of a better solution to the trenching challenge. After a site inspection by both dealer and Antraquip factory personnel, a production and cost proposal was presented to the contractor. The proposal was made to do a trial with an AQ4XL hydraulic rock cutter mounted on a Kobelco SK350 LC excavator. The proposal also included a guaranteed production of no less than 200-plus ft. of 20-ft. pipe (10 sections) in a five-day work week, double the contractor’s initial production goal.
Results The contractor reported that during the trial of the AQ4XL on the Kobelco SK350 LC excavator, the production rates exceeded the guaranteed production quota listed above. This equates to 10 to 12 cu. yds. per hour of production vs. approximately 1 cu. yd. per hour achieved with hydraulic breaker. The AQ4XL’s 215-hp motor provides up to 28,120 ft.-lbs. of torque and up to 24,068 lbs. of cutting force to cut the very dense and hard limestone. Even so, the pick/bit consumption has been reported to be very low due to the low abrasion nature of the limestone. Since the trial period began, the AQ4XL has allowed the contractor to exceed his production goals and is helping to bring the project back into budget. diers so valued by our nation. Joe Hall, Second Class Petty Officer, served in Vietnam from 1968 to 1974. “I was a builder in the Seabees,” Hall said. “I poured a lot of concrete. We built aircraft runways, bridges, buildings… even fixed broken windows when we had to. Our motto was ‘We Build, We Fight.’ “We were the laid back guys of the service. If it needed to be done, we did it, no questions asked. I learned to drive everything from a wheelbarrow to a 50-ton crane. In Vietnam, we did a lot of work in the jungles. We did encounter snipers, but mostly we were scared, not hurt. Remember, some of us were just 18 years old when we went overseas. Some guys weren’t scared at all. It’s just how you’re made, I guess. “I think the hardest thing was to come back to our own U.S. Navy Seabee Museum photo country where people didn’t like soldiers who’d been in Vietnam. career. We’re a self-sufficient construction force that prides itself on doing great things with the least amount of people. We do this by perfecting our construction skills across all of the different skills of our Seabees. We cross train a lot. Other branches of the military have construction forces, but none are as self-sufficient as we are. We do more with less. We jokingly say we essentially work 36-hour days seven days a week.” Jim Mattas, another former Seabee (E-3 construction man/builder) who has served more recently said, “The thing I take away from it is that it was the foundation that my whole life took off from. I’ve worked in the construction trade ever since I got out in ‘93. I don’t have any student loans, I raised one son and have nearly raised the second one now, and he’s special needs. I never finished 10th grade. Only in America, right?” While the history of the Seabees is indeed impactful, current projects are no less valuable. As recently as Sept. 28 in Guam, Seabees reacted quickly to news of an airplane crash in Chuuk, Micronesia. There, sailors from the Underwater Construction Team (UCT2), initially tasked with improving the wharf area and building structures to protect the coral reef from damage due to boat anchors, responded immediately to the news of a downed airplane at risk of sinking in a local lake. Not only did the sailors complete an underwater sweep of the plane to ensure all occupants were free, but also arranged for Medevac service for the most injured to the closest Naval Hospital. Six doctors from the Coast Guard arrived on scene at Chuuk to care for those who received local hospital care. Yet the assistance provided by the Seabees didn’t end there. When it was learned that at least three of the injured passengers required blood transfusions, volunteers from the UCT-2 unit swiftly donated a pint each, proof positive of just how natural “giving your all” has become for the group. In fact, so tireless were and are their efforts on behalf of the residents in each of the countries in which they serve that they’ve earned yet another nickname: “the Navy’s Peace Corps.” Even more recently, Seabee sailors assigned to Naval Mobile Construction

Holt joined HOLT CAT in September 2011 as a trainee in Holt’s Leadership Training Program and subsequently completed a similar program for Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria, Ill. In 2012, after completing a comprehensive rotation through every department in the company, he was promoted to general service manager of Holt’s machine division, the largest division of HOLT CAT. He led all
service operations for heavy equipment, including technical services, lube service and Caterpillar support. In March 2014, as vice president for commercial engine sales, he was responsible for diesel and natural gas engines sales to the electrical power generation, petroleum, industrial and other commercial markets. In January 2015, he took on the role of senior vice president of diversified businesses where he was responsible for leading HOLT CAT’s new Rental Services Company, Texas First Rentals; HOLT Agribusiness, and HOLT Crane and Equipment. In March 2016, he was promoted to executive vice president and general manager where he was responsible for all enterprise operations of HOLT CAT before taking on his current role. He graduated from the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Holt currently serves as chairman on the SA Works Board. He also serves on the board of directors for the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, the Board of the Alamo Academies of the Alamo Community College District and Workforce Solutions Alamo. Felling Trailers Introduces New EZ Tilt Technology Felling Trailers Inc. debuted its EZ Tilt Technology with the FT-12 EZ-T tilt trailer at the 2018 Rental Show in New Orleans, La. Felling’s EZ Tilt Technology allows for ground level loading with its rotating torsion suspension, providing a 5-degree load angle. This low load angle makes it possible to load and unload low clearance equipment such as floor sweepers, scissor lifts and rollers. The EZ-Tilt trailer is great for rental shops or rental yards, offering the versatility to load a variety of equipment safely and quickly, getting the customer on their way, according to the company. “The EZ Tilt is what I would call a universal trailer, the electric/hydraulic lift system with the power up and down gives the operator the ability to load and deliver two scissor lifts at a time. Plus, with the EZ Tilt’s low load angle, it gives the operator the ability to load the hard to load floor sweepers and has the capacity to haul a skid steer,” said Ed Steinemann, Felling’s national account manager. Peterbilt Unveils OnGuardACTIVE Peterbilt Motors Company announced the availability of WABCO’s OnGuardACTIVE safety system on its medium duty Models 348, 337 and 220. OnGuardACTIVE is an advanced driver assistance system that provides the driver with acoustic, visual and haptic alerts in potentially dangerous situations. The system also will engage the braking system to prevent a collision with a moving or stationary vehicle in the event the driver does not respond soon enough. The system is always on for vehicle speeds above 15mph even when cruise control is disabled. The adaptive cruise control function will help reduce driver fatigue in congested traffic and make cruise control a more useful feature by automatically adjusting vehicle speed relative to the vehicle ahead in order to maintain a pre-set following distance. “Providing our customers with the best possible solutions for the safety of the driver is the top priority for Peterbilt,� said Peterbilt Chief Engineer Scott Newhouse. “Adding WABCO’s OnGuardACTIVE to the medium duty line up is a big step towards giving those customers an option to increase safety.� The safety system will be available for order on Peterbilt Models 337 and 348 beginning March 2018. The amount of partnership that HOLT CAT’s customers are asking the company to be integrated with has grown and that has pushed the venerable Cat dealer to be dynamic — and one of the outcomes of that is growing rental inventory. “We have over $750 million of rental inventory that is highly utilized,” Peter J. Holt still has close associations with the industry in which he was a longtime leader. “He is, I think, enjoying himself,” said Corinna Holt Richter. “My dad is not the type to retire and not do anything.
