FLAGSTAFF BRIDGE PROJECT EARNS NATIONAL AWARD RECOGNITION

After the old bridge was demolished, crews used hydraulic jacks to “slide” the new bridge into place. The method cut an estimated two months off of construction time and saved nearly $7 million over traditional bridge construction methods.

Contractor Crews Come Together After Train Derailment Volunteer emergency responders, firefighters, law enforcement, medical providers, contractor crews and regular citizens all worked together to help those whose trip was so suddenly and violently interrupted by the derailment of an Amtrak train on Sept. 25 in Montana.

With the help of Volvo, John Deere and Komatsu excavators, emergency responders were able to remove the train cars and other debris caused by the accident.

Investigators do not know the cause of the accident, but they are studying video from the train and another locomotive that went over the same track a little over an hour earlier, National Transportation Safety Board Vice Chairman Bruce Landsberg said.

Sometimes rail lines can become deformed by heat, creating buckles in the tracks known as sun kinks, according to officials. That was the cause of a derailment in northern Montana in August 1988, when an Empire Builder train veered off the tracks about 170 mi. east in the tiny town of Saco. The NTSB concluded that an inspection failed to catch a problem in the track, and officials did not warn trains to slow down on that stretch. The crew saw the track had shifted, but the train was going full speed and could not stop before derailing.

“We have experts that are studying the camera footage frame by frame to make sure that we see exactly what the engineer saw — or maybe didn’t see,” Landsberg said.

The train derailed before a switch in the line, where one set of tracks turned into two, on a stretch of track that had been inspected just two days before, he said.

Sarah Robbin, the Disaster and Emergency Services coordinator, said the response across the Hi-Line was “fantastic.”

“We can’t thank our partners enough, who came from everywhere and did what they needed to do, and it’s just going to be one of those things that I don’t know that we’ll ever be able to repay, but know that when they put out the call, we will be there for them,” she said.

The derailment was approximately 150 mi. northeast of the capital of Helena and about 30 mi. from the Canadian border. CDOT Demolishes 57-Year-Old Aging Viaduct On I-70 Crews from the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Central 70 Project successfully demolished the 2-mi.-long Interstate 70 viaduct between Colorado and Brighton boulevards in four months, one month ahead of schedule.

“Safe, successful and timely demolition has been our priority since day one,” said

Bob Hays, CDOT's Central 70 project director. “The intricacies of conducting demolition in such a confined area close to homes and businesses were a challenge. But from careful planning and execution, the team completed another major project milestone and Denver’s I-70 viaduct is now a thing of the past.”

The Central 70 Project will reconstruct a 10-mi. stretch of I-70, add one new Express Lane in each direction, remove the aging 57-year-old viaduct and lower the interstate between Brighton and Colorado boulevards.

Since May, demolition statistics include: • More than 45,000 hours worked to complete demolition; • 18 excavators used in tandem to carefully remove sections of the viaduct at a time; • A total of 52,000 cu. yds. of concrete and 1,025 tons of steel removed and recycled; • More than 4,500 dump truck loads of debris removed.

“With the viaduct demolition happening just feet away from some of these businesses, we wanted to help encourage customers to continue to frequent these local shops and

With viaduct demolition now complete, crews will continue excavating for the future eastbound lanes of I-70 between Brighton and Colorado boulevards, which will mirror the current lanes motorists are traveling on today.

During the construction of these future eastbound lanes, traffic on I-70 through the lowered section will remain as is, with three lanes of traffic open in each direction of I-70 during peak travel times.

The future eastbound I-70 lanes are on track to open in 2022. At that time, four lanes of traffic (three general-purpose lanes and one express lane) will be open in each direction.

Intel Breaks Ground On $20B, 670,000-Sq.-Ft. Chip Factory Construction is now under way on the largest private sector investment in Arizona’s history.

Intel broke ground on its new $20 billion project on its Ocotillo campus “This builds on 40 years that Intel has been in Arizona,” Intel CEO Patrick Gelsinger said.

Intel once again is investing in Arizona with its two new leading-edge chip factories. The project spans 670,000 sq. ft.

“If you want to get an indication of how big it is, if you look at this [current] facility, our new facility is three times larger,” said Dominic Greensmith, director of construction.

“They're going to go down about 60 feet in the middle and then we’re pouring about 400,000 cubic yards of concrete, 40,000 tons of structural steel going in. That’s about eight Eiffel towers so it’s phenomenal size, but inside the building, we’ll have hundreds of miles of cable and pipe. These are the most advanced buildings in the world.”

Once complete, the Ocotillo campus will house a total of six fabrication factories. This new project is said to create 3,000 new Intel jobs, 3,000 construction jobs and indirectly support 15,000 additional jobs in the state.

“So all of the power we use is renewable. In addition, we just built a massive water reclaim facility. Water from our factory goes to the facility, where it can be treated and cleaned and then reused at Intel. That's up to 9 million gallons of water a day we can do that with.”

The Arizona Department of Transportation’s Fourth Street Bridge replacement project in Flagstaff is receiving national recognition. The project is among a list of 12 in line for national awards from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

The innovative bridge project has already won western regional recognition. For the national award, the three highest-scoring projects from each regional competition earn a place on a “Top 12” list of projects competing for the national Grand Prize — selected by an independent panel of industry judges — and the People’s Choice Award, chosen by the public through online voting. In addition, those top national winners each receive $10,000 in cash awards to be donated to a charity or scholarship of the state DOT’s choosing.

“This project has provided improved access to our campus for our students and families. It also has created safe and healthy alternatives for students who want to walk to school or ride their bikes,” said David Lykins, superintendent at Northland Preparatory Academy, a charter school locat-

ed near the southern end of the Fourth Street Bridge.

The new, wider bridge not only benefits the academy, helping students get safely to and from school, but also boosts economic development in the area with better traffic flow and more mobility options.

ADOT State Engineer Dallas Hammit explained the innovative bridge-slide method utilized for the project: “We used a slide technique where the new bridge was built, just east of the old one. That allowed us to move the new structure into place in about two weeks. This greatly decreased the inconvenience to the traveling public.”

After the old bridge was demolished, crews used hydraulic jacks to “slide” the new bridge into place. The method cut an estimated two months off of construction time and saved nearly $7 million over traditional bridge construction methods. This reduced the impact to the local community during construction as well as creating a wider bridge that allows vehicles and pedestrians to safely cross. Planning for Future — Expert Offers Volvo CE Recognizes 2021-2022 Construction Economic Forecast Ascendum Machinery The pandemic effectively ended the longest period of expansion in the U.S. economy since World War II and is negatively affecting many industries, weakening the economy, decreasing GDP and causing a lot of uncertainty in the markets.

It can be difficult to be confident in your plans for your company in 2021 and 2022 when you’re not sure how larger macro-economic forces will impact your business.

Looking for Upswing Everyone wants a recovery in 2021. And, according to Alex Carrick, chief economist, ConstructConnect, there will be a recovery in 2021, but it will be uneven.

For example, travel and tourism will not see a recovery.

“The airline sector is tumbling further,” said Carrick. “Tourism and business travel are far below normal. Security clearances at airports are down by 70 percent. Disney Inc. is reducing employment at its theme parks by the tens of thousands.”

However, technology and entertainment has grown through the pandemic.

“High-tech has come to the rescue of the economy through the pandemic,” said Carrick. “’Big Data’ management and video conferencing have saved the day for many corporations. But Zoom is now being valued by investors at a figure higher than the combined worth of America’s four largest airlines. Is that justified?

Apparently, a lot of people think so.”

And, business fixed investment (BFI), which is the purchase of new equipment, structures, and intellectual property products, is expected to increase 13.4 percent in 2021 after decreasing by 15.8 percent in 2020, says the CBO. If true, the 2021 figure will be 4.5 percent lower than the same period in 2019.

U.S. exports are expected to grow at a rate of 7.6 percent in 2021 after a 40-percent gain in the second half and a 21percent loss in the second quarter of 2020, said the CBO. This growth, however, will still put real exports in the fourth quarter of 2021 at 1.2 percent lower than their value in the fourth quarter of 2019.

CBO expects labor market conditions will improve in 2021, and the unemployment rate will reach 8.6 percent by the fourth quarter of 2021, which is about 5 percentage points higher than it was in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Manitowoc Company to Acquire Crane Togal…

Business of H&E Equipment Services Construction Tech Start-Up Debuts Its Estimating Product

The acquisition of H&E’s crane business will expand Manitowoc’s ability to provide rentals, new sales, used sales, aftermarket parts and service to a variety of end market customers.

The Manitowoc Company Inc., a global manufacturer of cranes and lifting solutions, announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the crane business of H&E Equipment Services Inc., one of the largest rental equipment companies in the United States.

The wholly owned Manitowoc subsidiary will be called “MGX Equipment Services LLC.” “We believe this acquisition will allow us to better understand and respond to the market needs, and to more effectively deliver solutions that positively support the customers’ business,” said Ion Warner, VP, marketing and investor relations, Manitowoc.

“For Manitowoc, there is also the benefit of a recurring revenue stream in aftermarket services, new & used equipment sales, in addition to rentals [bare rental]. With this new business, we plan to continue improving these services by investing in best-in-class sales and technical support in the assigned territories."

Under the terms of the agreement, Manitowoc is expected to pay approximately $130 million funded by a combination of cash on hand and existing debt availability. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2021 and is subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.

The acquisition of H&E’s crane business will expand Manitowoc’s ability to provide rentals, new sales, used sales, aftermarket parts and service to a variety of end market customers. H&E’s crane business operates with 11 full-service branch locations.

Artificial Intelligence construction technology start-up Togal.ai has announced it will enter the marketplace in September.

Following months of beta testing and sampling by more than two dozen general contractors and trade partners, Togal offers software that revolutionizes the estimating process in construction, according to the company.

“We are compressing weeks of work into seconds, and nobody has focused on this space yet,” said Togal CEO Patrick Murphy. “This is something every construction company needs, especially now. With construction delays and labor shortages due to the pandemic, the industry is under even more pressure to innovate.”

Togal recently was featured on Cafecito Talk with Miami Mayor Francis Suarez. During the interview Murphy discussed how Togal and artificial intelligence could revolutionize the construction world.

“I’m so proud of the progress that Togal.ai has made,” Suarez said following the interview. “It is so great to see a Miami born and Miami based tech company launch and grow successfully. The use of AI in construction will revolutionize the industry and I’m excited to see what the future holds for them.”

Togal automates the estimating process, which includes measuring the size of each room’s square footage to accurately price the cost of construction. Typically, estimators do this manually with rollers and rulers, or with a click and drag of a computer mouse. Plans for major projects can be hundreds of pages, taking weeks to complete. Togal can finish those jobs in mere seconds.

“Togal is faster than an experienced estimator, more accurate and a fraction of the cost. I haven’t talked with a construction company that wouldn’t use this. It makes them all more efficient,” Togal co-founder Patrick Hughes said.

The goal isn’t to replace humans, but to allow estimators to spend more time helping their clients save money and build better jobs, thus increase their win rate.

The Engineering and Construction sector is ripe for disruption. The $10 trillion industry has grown labor-productivity just 1 percent in the past 20 years, compared to 3.6 percent for manufacturing, according to a McKinsey Global Institute study.

This is no secret to Murphy. When the former U.S. Congressman joined Miami-based Coastal Construction Group as executive vice president, he was struck by the lack of machine learning and technology used across the industry.

So Murphy enlisted the help of various PhD’s in mathematics and AI experts to look for ways to improve production with technology. The estimating department stood out as the clear frontrunner because the work is repetitive and time consuming.

AUSA Grows U.S. Market for Its Unique Compact Equipment

AUSA has become a global manufacturer of compact industrial vehicles for moving materials and road maintenance.

In 1956, four friends in Spain came together to form a company to design and build microcars for the European market. Their business, Automóviles Utilitarios Sociedad Anónima (AUSA), only produced the diminutive automobiles for five years, but the cars were noted for their comfort and the quality of their workmanship.

Then, AUSA abruptly shifted its focus in 1961 to make small dumpers for the construction sector. Although more commonly used in Europe, dumpers are different from dump trucks in that they are designed to be open four-wheeled vehicles with the load skip in front of the driver. In contrast, most dump trucks are larger and have their cab mounted in front of the load. A dumper gets its name from the fact its skip can tip to dump the load.

Sixty years later, AUSA has become a global manufacturer of compact industrial vehicles for moving materials and road maintenance. From its headquarters outside Barcelona, Spain, the equipment maker now produces a line of 16 different dumpers as well as forklift and telehandler models.

But it has only been since 2015 that AUSA has had a market presence in the United States, after the Spanish company decided to take a crack at America’s lucrative construction equipment business.

“AUSA hired me in 2014 because of my expertise in the U.S. market and knowledge of how to create distribution networks in this country,” said Ignasi Moner, CEO of AUSA US Corp., from the company’s American offices just outside Charleston, S.C. “AUSA asked if I was ready to create a U.S. corporation and do state-by-state growth. I did so and we opened our American subsidiary in December 2014.”

He noted that AUSA chose Charleston because of its desire to be on the mid-Atlantic coast where the time difference between South Carolina and the AUSA factory in Barcelona is a relatively short six hours. Its U.S. warehouse in Houston, Texas, is only one additional time zone behind

the Mediterranean port city.

With much of AUSA’s equipment and parts being transported via ocean vessels, establishing facilities in key shipping port cities like Houston, Charleston and Baltimore was a logical step.

Dumpers Have Become AUSA’s Top Sellers Of the three machine types that AUSA makes and sells, Moner characterized its compact dumpers as the company’s most popular line, although that was certainly not the case when he arrived in the United States.

“It started with our forklifts because we saw a real need for the rough terrain models, but now I would certainly say

it is the AUSA dumpers,” he said. “On my visits to construction sites around the world, it is common to see dumpers at work. When AUSA came here, we were among the top three dumper manufacturers in the world, but not only did I not see our dumpers in America, I could hardly see dumpers at all.”

Moner noted, though, that after beginning its American operations, the product promotion that AUSA did at large industry events, like the annual Golf Industry Show and the World of Concrete convention, began to pay off for the manufacturer.

“We also worked with golf course builders and general construction contractors, and since then, more contractors have come to see the benefit of using dumpers,” he said. see AUSA page 42

Despite being small, they can still pick up and handle large materials and are equipped with a fall prevention valve, guaranteeing safety on the job site. The parts prone to wear are made of Hardox steel.

Both models are designed to have an electrical kit installed for dual-acting hydraulics: this way, the two grapples can utilize 360-degree rotation even with mini excavators that only have two hoses.

Like the larger models, the MB-G450 sorting grapple comes with interchangeable blades, which can be flipped around, extending the life of the blades. Finally, both units have two versions: with or without a rotation turret.

Both grapples can have accessories installed to simplify managing materials: the clamshell kit is perfect when collecting and handling small material, picking up soil, gravel and sand. The multi-purpose blade kit helps pick up oddly shaped materials.

For the MB-G450 sorting grapple, users can install the tilting lift rubber protection kit to manage angular blocks and delicate material.

Engcon, Takeuchi Prepare Excavators for Tiltrotators Japanese excavator manufacturer Takeuchi has improved lead times for its dealers by introducing an Engcon Ready option for the TB295W excavator. This is the start of an expanded collaboration between Takeuchi and Engcon — with the goal of offering factory-installed and integrated solutions.

Engcon’s tiltrotator, intelligent control systems and automatic machine couplers can increase the flexibility, efficiency and safety of smaller excavators at a time where there is great interest in these products, the manufacturer said.

Simultaneously as interest and demand for Engcon products increases, so does the demand for shorter lead times. So, minimizing the time equipment stands at the dealer and providing customers quicker access to their machines is becoming increasingly important in times like these, where “time is money”.

The Engcon Ready option for the TB295W is the result of a collaboration between Engcon and Takeuchi to enable plug and play installations, reducing the installation times for Engcon products. This in turn works to the advantage of common customers.

TB295W — The First Machine With an Engcon Ready Option The launch of this Engcon Ready option is the first step in an expanded collaboration with Takeuchi with the goal of offering factory-installed and integrated solutions.

“The TB295W is the first machine to have Engcon Ready as a factory installed option. A smart choice as we see in many markets excavators equipped with an Engcon tiltrotator,” said Fredrik Eklind, product owner at Engcon Control Systems.

Eklind explained that the factory installation of Engcon’s proportional control system, ergonomic handles and a locking system for safe tool changes, reduces the time it takes to get the machine ready at the dealer.

“The only thing missing when the machine reaches the dealer’s workshop is an Engcon machine coupler and a tiltrotator for the configuration to be complete,” Eklind said.

A Fully Integrated Solution With Benefits In addition to a faster lead time, being factory-installed has

additional benefits compared to the traditional process where the dealer undertakes installation. The factory-prepared Engcon Ready solution has the components of the Engcon control system fully integrated as a part of the machine.

The Engcon Ready option for the TB295W means that the machine is delivered with Takeuchi-labeled Engcon handles, machine-adapted cable gland and a hydraulic locking solution that is adapted for Engcon’s fully automatic machine couplers that connect tools, hydraulics and electronics without the driver having to leave the cab.

Engcon Ready has been specially developed in collaboration with Takeuchi, installed at the Takeuchi Nagano factory in Japan and is covered by the same factory warranty as the rest of the machine.

Production of the TB295W installed with the Engcon Ready solution started in August 2021 and the first units will be delivered shortly to selected markets in Europe. It will then be launched globally.

“The collaboration with Takeuchi provides benefits to everyone involved and enables customers to experience the harmony created by Takeuchi TB295W and the range of compatible Engcon products, control systems, tiltrotators and automatic machine couplers,” said Eklind.

The list of AUSA’s most popular dumpers, according to Moner, begins with the D601A, of which there are three different models, each featuring slight variations from the others, and all with payload capacities of 13,200 lbs., or 4.1 cu. yds. Behind that model is AUSA’s D350AHG, which can haul up to 7,700 lbs., or 2.75 cu. yds.

“Contractors also like our more compact models — the D100A, D120A and D150A dumpers — because we realized a need from customers using small concrete buggies who wanted seats behind the skip,” Moner said. “We can also offer them with seatbelts, giving customers more safety, and extra capacity ranging from 2,200 to 3,300 pounds. Each of these are articulated dumpers.”

Moner insisted there is no real comparison to be made between AUSA’s compact dumpers and larger dump trucks as the scale of the projects they take on are so different, he said.

Still, he noted, “Ours is a smaller, more maneuverable machine that is centrally articulated with a 180-degree swiveling skip. They are built to go up and down hills and over rough terrain with ease.

“The contractors that use AUSA dumpers save more money because ours are more efficient,” he said. “For instance, you will often see skid-steers and front-end loaders at a site moving earth to where crew members spread the dirt. With AUSA’s line of dumpers, excavators dig the dirt, put it into our dumpers, which can then better spread the dirt because of the 180-degree swiveling skip.

As a result, AUSA’s dumpers work very well in applications like landscaping, smaller earthmoving jobs and projects involving concrete.

“What you usually see on those jobs are flat dumpers, which cannot swivel and don’t work well on rough terrain.

Why? Because there has not been a tradition to use compact dumpers,” he said. “I see that in other construction work in the U.S. Once builders see the benefits of products where they save money, gain more efficiency, help the environment and make workers safer, they will usually use those machines.

Moner is proud of AUSA’s ability to build its dumpers to have such power, safety, efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Available for only a relatively brief amount of time in the United States, the product stands out because of its unique attributes, he said.

“Now, I think dumpers are the most demanded products in this country,” he said.

Forklifts, Telehandlers Also Excel in Tough Spots AUSA’s line of rough-terrain 4x4 forklifts, like the dumpers, are compact, powerful and versatile, according to Moner. Their reduced size and small turning radii give them excellent maneuverability on even the steepest hillsides. The company’s six forklift models also can handle heavy load capacities, ranging from 3,000 to 11,000 lbs., and have proven ideal in moving a large volume of hefty payloads.

Moner listed the C251H and C401H forklifts, able to transport 5,000- and 8,000-lb. loads, respectively, as being AUSA’s best-selling among that line. Each of the forklifts have a maximum lift of 17.88 ft.

The manufacturer’s three compact 4x4 telehandler models utilize a telescopic boom that provides better handling despite the machine’s smaller dimensions in terms of width.

It is positioned on the right side of the machine to provide the operator with improved visibility and increased safety while loading and unloading materials.

Growing U.S. Market Now a Priority for AUSA When asked in July how many distributors AUSA had in the United States, Moner prefaced his answer by saying that the number was still trending upward.

“Currently, we have 20 dealers and 48 points of sale, since some dealers have multiple branches,” he said. “By the end of 2021, we plan to raise that total to 25 dealers and 50 locations that sell AUSA products. There are still states where we

With its product availability spanning five continents, and with subsidiaries in Germany, France, the United Kingdom and China, Moner said expansion in the American market has now become a priority.

To boost the number of distributors across the country, he said the manufacturer has designed an attractive dealer program to assist with marketing, service and parts for AUSA machines.

“We want them to become more of a partner and not simply a place to stock and sell AUSA equipment,” Moner said.

“I don’t think we are very demanding — we just want them to succeed. Although many dealers know now who we are, for other dealers we are a new name, and we have a new line of products, like our dumpers. We want to help them locate customers for those machines.

“And we also know that people that own AUSA products love their equipment,” he added. “We offer a very solid collection of products.”  CEG

Construction Crews Performing $480M Upgrade On Fix50 Project in Sacramento

Construction crews from Flatiron are embarking on one of the largest highway construction projects in the California region.

Overseen by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the $480 million Fix50 project will see a longawaited upgrade of the busy section of Highway 50, a key corridor in mid-town and East Sacramento (Sacramento County), with the addition of high-occupancy vehicle lanes; widening of 12 bridges; and newly-built retaining walls.

“This is one of the largest projects in the Sacramento region, one of the largest projects we've seen in a very long time,” said Angela DaPrato, public information officer of Caltrans District 3.

One main purpose of this massive project is to replace the existing Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavement, reduce maintenance expenditures and reduce congestion. The existing PCC pavement was built between 1967 and 1971 and has reached the end of its service life. It is deteriorated and has a poor ride quality that requires annual maintenance to repair and maintain.

A recent pavement condition survey conveyed that there is severe slab cracking and faulting in the third and fourth lanes in both directions and minor slab cracking in the first and second lanes in both directions.

A portion of Highway 50, between W and X streets, is comprised of elevated bridges. Flatiron Construction will be tasked with building and connecting a third bridge between the east and westbound sides of the freeway to make room for the new HOV lanes.

The project also includes the restoration of other roadway elements such as drainage, lighting and intelligent transportation systems.

“In addition to widening 12 bridges and adding three miles of retaining walls, crews will replace all lanes with new concrete pavement and long-life asphalt,” said Flatiron Construction. “The project also includes adding a sound wall on the south side of the highway in the Elmhurst neighborhood, between Stockton Boulevard and 65th Street. [This is] an innovative project to serve the expanding needs of the Sacramento community. The U.S. 50 Multimodal Corridor Enhancement and Rehabilitation project will add seven miles of new carpool lanes in each direction to complete the U.S. 50 carpool system from the eastern Foothill communities into downtown Sacramento.

“The sound walls are designed to be 8-to-14 feet tall and will make a total of 10,400 feet in length,” said Flatiron Construction. “The team applied masonry aesthetics best used in neighboring communities and anti-graffiti clear coating to minimize future maintenance costs. The sound walls, once complete, will provide a significant improvement to lessen highway noise in neighborhoods south of U.S.-50 between Stockton Ave and 65th Ave.” Construction Progress Currently, Flatiron crews are working along and on U.S.50 from the I-5 Interchange to Watt Avenue around the clock. Nighttime demolition work is taking place in the Elmhurst area. The median section is being demolished to provide space for the new lanes.

According to Flatiron, in order to improve clearance for truck traffic, the highway will be lowered at seven overpass-

es. The project also includes rehabilitation of three pumping plants that move groundwater away from the highway as well as upgrading all signs, ramp metering and intelligent transportation systems.

K-rail installation also is underway to complete the traffic split on eastbound U.S 50 from Howe Avenue to Watt Avenue.

"I know the residents in the Elmhurst and South Park area are very excited about the sound wall that’s going to be extending from U.S. 50 from Stockton Boulevard all the way down to 65th Street,” said DaPrato.

Light rail riders also will see some improvements with the addition of a second track along the Gold Line between Sunrise Boulevard and downtown Folsom.

Additionally, crews continue to perform piledriving and other construction activities on/under U.S. Highway 50 between W & X Streets from 6th Street to 26th Street in Sacramento.

Currently, the California Highway Patrol is performing rolling breaks and lane closures in both directions of U.S. 50 between Howe and Watt avenues for utility work with the Sacramento Municipal Utility District replacing power lines.

Overall, the project also proposes to: • Allow connectivity and consistency with the planned HOV system in the Sacramento Region; • Enhance mobility and provide incentives for ride sharing during peak period travel; • Achieve the goals of the current SACOG MTP by promoting ride sharing; • Provide an option for reliable peak period travel time; • Use the highway facilities as efficiently as possible; • Improve general traffic operations by reducing congestion and travel time; • Improve bicycle and pedestrian access.

Project Background The project is being funded by the State Highway Operations and Protection Program (SHOPP), Roadway Rehabilitation Program, Solutions for Congested Corridors Program (SCCP) by the State of California’s Senate Bill (SB) 1 – Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017 and Sacramento Measure A Transportation Sales Tax Program managed by the Sacramento Transportation Authority (STA).

The estimated capital cost is $398 million and the estimated support cost is $62 million.

“This project will also increase the deficient vertical clearance at seven over crossing structures in the project limits as identified in the District 3 Goods and Movement Study,” DaPrato said. “This increased vertical clearance will reduce the frequency of ‘high load’ hits, reduce maintenance worker exposure to traffic, and improve freight mobility in this corridor.”

The design-build initiative, which received project and environmental approval in May 2017, strives to deal with many inter-connected issues.

CHP is designing the new lanes and highway infrastructure.

Flatiron secured the design-build contract in the fall of 2020 and between November 2020 and last January, crews were removing debris and trees on the south side of US 50, from Stockton Blvd. to 65th Street to prep the sit for the construction of a sound wall.  CEG

At Least 18 Manufacturers Lead Way for e-Revolution EMISSIONS from page 1

found that there is currently an electric alternative for at least seven different types of construction machines.

Bellona started tracking the manufacture of zero-emission construction equipment, establishing a database that “combines all the available electric construction machinery and equipment that can help eliminate emissions and reduce noise from the job site.”

Getting the Word Out The organization has found that at least 18 manufacturers offer equipment and components to support the electric revolution. These companies are cranking out eco-friendly excavators, wheel loaders, dumpers, vibratory plates, slew and track drives and cement mixers. And that’s just what Bellona has logged. Other manufacturers are joining the cause.

“Even though there is already a good selection of products available on the market today, it seems like potential buyers are not informed well enough about the availability and the specifications of electric construction equipment,” the organization said.

Bellona added that due to these advances in the market sector, contractors now have the opportunity to make an active choice for construction equipment that neither harms the surrounding environment nor the local community while still doing the job. “For the market there is only room to grow,” the organization said.

The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) wants its members to stay informed as they grow with the market.

The newly-formed Engine Emissions Strategy Task Force (EESTF) has a goal of helping guide AEM’s efforts to keep members and the off-road industry up to date on equipment emissions regulations.

EESTF will work to educate professionals on potential future emissions requirements, changes to power trains, the impact on equipment design and cost implications, according to AEM. Another potential goal is to help others understand that a different technology solution for different applications and machine types may exist.

Alternative Technology Solutions Different eco-friendly technology solutions have existed and continue to launch each year. Electric and hybrid small machines have been used in indoor construction and maintenance for years now. But, as Volvo put it, “quietly in the background, electric vehicles have been heading off the road and onto construction job sites.”

Heavy equipment manufacturers were out in front, putting lower-emission engines in their machines over the years, adding features that reduce fuel consumption and

developing telematics systems to help operators reduce fuel usage and idling time.

But heavy equipment like excavators and wheel loaders are just now becoming available in electric options, ushering in a new era of electromobility.

“Electric machines are going to build the roads, bridges and utility lines of tomorrow, and they’re going to do it without producing greenhouse gas emissions,” said Ray Gallant, head of product management and productivity of Volvo CE. “There are already early adopters successfully using electric construction equipment, and they’re finding that they can lower their carbon footprint while keeping their performance high.”

He believes the industry has come a long way in reducing emissions, and there is still room for improvement but “we’re at a point where most of the benefits have been realized. New technologies like electric machines are the next frontier in emissions reductions.”

The challenges in bringing electromobility to the construction industry include building out the charging infrastructure.

Manufacturers are finding work-arounds.

Volvo’s electric excavator and wheel loader, coming to the United States this year, can be charged in a 220/240-volt electrical socket. They also are available with fastcharge options, getting them close to peak charge in a couple of hours. The company believes that with fast-moving development the industry will soon see options such as mobile power banks for charging in remote locations.

“Our customers will not notice a difference between the power and performance of the electric machines versus the diesel models,” said Lars Arnold, Volvo CE electromobility product manager. “In fact, they’ll enjoy several benefits with the electric machines thanks to the lack of a diesel engine, including lower noise, less machine vibration and no exhaust fumes.”

Power and performance are being generated through natural gas and hydrogen cell technology, both of which are gaining ground in the zero-emission front.

Representatives from the California Natural Gas Vehicle Partnership (CNGVP) recently reported that fleets are increasingly turning to near-zero emission natural gas vehicles and carbon-negative renewable natural gas.

Today, fleets across California and the nation are investing in commercially available and proven natural gas vehicles, said Ashley Remillard, vice chair of CNGVP. Fleet owners are “choosing sustainable

technology that meets their wide ranging and intensive operational needs while keeping an eye on future opportunities to incorporate electric trucks,” she added.

At the same time, research and development of hydrogen and fuel cells for construction applications is g r o w i n g .

Hydrogen is considered a good fuel source for the on-highway sector, but several manufacturers are combining forces to bring the technology to earth work, mining and other off-high applications.

Hydrogen fuel cells are no-combustion technology that requires a constant source of fuel and oxygen to create electricity and emits only water.

Hydrogen tanks on a fuel cell electric car or truck can be refilled in about the same amount of time as liquid fuel tanks, eliminating the lengthy recharging times required by battery-dependent electric vehicles.

Hydrogen is available today from a variety of carbon-free and low carbon sources, providing low or even negative total carbon emissions from transport fleets, and zero smog-forming pollutants.

How Feasible Is It? The vehicle group of power technology manufacturer Eaton announced a partnership with Ballard Fuel Cell Systems and the National Renewable Energy Lab to develop heavy-duty truck fuel cell technology using hydrogen fuel cells.

The Green Car Congress reports that Eaton received a grant from the US. Department of Energy to develop highly efficient fuel cells capable of powering heavyduty machinery.

Eaton’s Twin Vortices Series (TVS) technology is at the heart of the partnership, according to Karl Sievertsen, vice president and CTO of Eaton’s Vehicle Group.

“Our TVS supercharger technology provides fuel cell manufacturers with a precise amount of controlled air to increase power and efficiency,” he said. “The efficiency of competitive fuel cells is lower because most hydrogen fuel cells use simple fans for air flow, which produces less pressure and is not controllable.”

ABB, Zurich, Switzerland, has signed an agreement with MEDATech of Ontario, Canada, to explore net-zero emission technology in the mining industry.

The goal is to explore solutions to decarbonize mining operations through charging solutions and optimized electric drive systems in battery electric vehicles for heavy-

duty applications.

Electric vehicles and matching charging infrastructure must meet demanding requirements for mining customers, including high power, automated and safe operations and ruggedized design for harsh environmental conditions.

“The mining sector has set clear and ambitious targets to decarbonize operations for a more sustainable future,” said Nic Beutler, ABB’s global product manager power system & charging solutions.

An agreement between Caterpillar and Nouveau Monde to develop zero-emissions mining equipment was announced this summer. Nouveau Monde hopes to become the exclusive supplier of all electric mining equipment at Matawinie Mine in Quebec, Canada, by 2028.

Cat will work with the company to incorporate the customer’s voice throughout the development, and for testing of the zeroemission fleet and infrastructure prior to commercial production.

Meanwhile, back at ACT Expo, a sustainably focused hybrid truck powertrain offering reduced weight and simplified installation, service and operation was on display this year.

Newcomer Hyliion, based in Cedar Park, Texas, produces electrified powertrain systems to augment or replace traditional dieselor natural gas-fueled powertrains.

This enhanced version of the company’s Hybrid powertrain is aimed at Class 8 diesel and CNG commercial trucks. Deliveries are planned for late this year. Thomas Healy, Hyliion founder, said the company expects the improvements “to make the system easier for fleets to adopt while also helping them achieve their emissions targets.”

Also at the expo in Long Beach, Calif., was a Class 6 and 7 fuel-cell electric truck powered by Hexagon Purus of Norway and Ballard Power Systems of Canada. Hexagon Purus’ turnkey electric drivetrain and hydrogen storage system was combined with Ballard’s fuel cell module.

The partners said the truck will provide a range of more than 400 mi. and refueling times comparable to conventional trucks.

They’re marketing it as a zero-emission solution for fleet owners with demanding operations, moving goods through the ‘middle miles,’ without the need to expand their fleet.

This truck should land on California’s hybrid and zero-emission voucher incentive program list in 2022. First fleet deployments are planned for the Los Angeles Basin area.

Kenworth T680 FCEV Climbs to Pikes Peak Summit A new Kenworth video features the zero emissions Kenworth T680 fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) on the road to the 14,115-foot summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado.

Kenworth became the first company to reach the summit of “America’s Mountain” with a Class 8 fuel cell electric vehicle. The milestone occurred during a Kenworth T680 FCEV zero emissions performance demonstration.

Kenworth and Toyota Motor North America R&D worked closely together on the successful summit attempt.

The Kenworth T680 FCEV features a Toyota hydrogen fuel cell electric powertrain offering 470 hp, along with a 350-mi. range with a 15-minute refill time.
