The dead space between stretches of interstate is coming alive across the country as states fill these neutral areas with solar panels. California is an early adopter of the concept, putting miles of otherwise empty expanses of land to good use. The Biden administration likes it as a straight path to reaching net-zero goals and is encouraging other states, such as Florida, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Maine, to join the bandwagon. A recent study determined that power to more than 250,000 homes could be generated through see JOBS page 48

Caterpillar Celebrates 130Years of Earthmoving Innovation

The year — 1893. Only 44 of today’s 50 states formed the union, and Grover Cleveland was elected the country’s 24th president. College basketball was in its infancy, holding its first official game, and the Bucyrus Steam Shovel and Dredge Company opened a new manufacturing facility in South Milwaukee, Wis., to improve and expand its production facilities.

Since this point in history, the management decisions and equipment produced in South Milwaukee have not only changed the construction and mining industries but also the course of history.

In the early 1900s, Bucyrus-produced equipment was a major contributor to the monumental excavation projects of the time.

“Dredges were used as part of the California gold rush, and shovels were a part of the vast Mesabi Iron Ranges,” said Shawn Paap, commercial manager of Cat electric rope shovels (ERS). “The New York State barge canal enlargement project, the largest U.S. earthmoving project between 19021912, also used Bucyrus dredges.”

The company’s 40- to 50-ton steam-powered shovels played a significant role in building the Panama Canal, one of the most exciting projects in human history. Over the course of the project, 77 shovels produced in South Milwaukee were used to construct the canal. When combined with the shovels produced by Marion Steam Shovel Company, a Bucyrus heritage company, 101 of the 102 shovelsusedintheprojectwerefromBucyrus.

World War II saw unprecedented demand for excavators in Europe, and virtually 100 percent of the company’s entire output from 1942 to 1945 was devoted to the war effort. Post-war, the company embarked on a $2 million project to increase plant capacity by 20 percent.

By the middle of the 20th century, Bucyrus was a global company with an expanded product offering, and more than 74,000 Bucyrus machines had been produced and used in more than 166 countries.

Important Innovations

Central to the strategy of moving production to South Milwaukee was to increase manufacturing efficiency of its core large machinery, such as rope shovels and draglines. Over the last 130 years, more than 32,000 machines have been produced at this location, and to this day, massive Cat electric rope shovels are being produced by the plant.

The heritage of today’s Cat 7495 and 7495HF models used for the mining industrybeganasrailroadshovels.Between18821930, more than 1,850 railroad shovels were produced.Thosefirstmodelsweren’tmobile by today’s standards, being pushed on rails or rollers. This manual process to move the

massive machines didn’t meet the efficiency needs of mining.

A series of early innovations originating from the South Milwaukee facility helped to improve rope shovel efficiency and durability. Borrowing Caterpillar’s technology of the 1920s, the steam-powered shovels adopted track-style rotating belts to significantly increase mobility. Prior to the 1930s, the entire rope shovel structure was riveted, but those rivets were replaced by welds to improve durability.

A major transition for rope shovels and

the industry was the shift from steam power to electric. Bucyrus pioneered the use of electricity as a power source more than 100 years ago, as early as 1917. The advent of a new DC electrical power system in 1919 ushered in the infancy of today’s modern ERS design, and the transition from steam power to electric was completed by 1939.

“As today’s mining industry increases its focus on the electrification of equipment to reduce carbon emissions and boost efficiency, Caterpillar is proud to be the leader in a product that has been electrified for several

decades,” said Caterpillar Product Value Stream Manager Flor Rivas.

Revolutionizing the market for Bucyrus and the industry at large, machine design transitioned to much less complicated AC electric motors from the rudimentary DC drive system.

“AC drive motors were simpler, lasted longer, required less maintenance, worked faster and more efficiently, and delivered greater power than DC motors,” said Mike Haws, technical steward of Cat electric rope shovels.

“The introduction of insulated gate bipolar transistor [IGBT] fuseless technology led totheevolutionintodigitalgateturnoff[GTO] systems. And a partnership with Siemens in the 1970s put Bucyrus on the cutting edge of AC drive technology, pushing drive system availability upward to 99 percent.”

Caterpillar Continues Rich History

Since Caterpillar acquired the Bucyrus product line in 2011, an excellent ERS product has been elevated to the next level of safety, productivityandreliabilitybymaking the machines safer, easier to access and maintain, perform better under extreme conditions, efficiently integrate technology and deliver higher availability, the company said.

Caterpillar introduced a liquid cooled motion regulator cabinet shortly after the acquisition to more efficiently dissipate the heat generated by electrical components. This enabled the global product to reliably operate in extreme temperatures ranging from -40 F to 120 F and at altitudes reaching 17,220 ft. without derating. The company also introduced a faster propel transfer switch to cut lag time by 70 percent, improving productivity.

Ferrovial Lands Nine Contracts Totaling More Than $1B

Ferrovial, a global infrastructure operator, announced, through subsidiary Webber, it was awarded nine construction projects in Texas and Florida, totaling more than $1 billion.

Work includes the reconstruction of bridges, widening of roadways and safety improvements for the surrounding communities.

Ferrovial, through its construction subsidiaries, is now working on projects across 10 states, strengthening its growing presence in the United States.

"I am proud of the work our team is doing to improve the safety of our roadways and alleviate traffic congestion in our communities,” said Jose Carlos Esteban, president and CEO ofWebber. “These projects position us for continued growth, developing our talent, and expanding our relevant backlog in Texas and along the East Coast."

Work

In Florida, the $79.9 million project is the company’s first large heavy civil project in the state, where it already maintains roads in Orange, Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, and the Port of Miami tunnel.

Webber will reconstruct one of the busiest interchanges in the city of Jacksonville — the interchange of I-95 and U.S. 1, also known as Martin Luther King Parkway. Work is under way and expected to be completed in spring 2025.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) awarded Webber eight projects throughout the state:

• IH-10 Reconstruction Colorado County, $365 million —This project will consist of the complete reconstruction of 12 mi. of IH-10 between Houston and SanAntonio. The proposed corridor will consist of three concrete main lanes and two asphalt frontage road lanes in each direction. Throughout the project, a total of 18 bridges will be completely replaced. Construction is expected to begin in January 2024 with estimated completion in 2027.

• IH-10 Guadalupe County, $245.2 million — Taking place in Seguin,Texas, this project will include a reconstruction and widening of approximately 4 mi. of existing road, along with new bridges and concrete pavement. Other scopes of work include the construction of new frontage roads, a new direct traffic connector between SH 46 and IH19, bridges built over the Union Pacific Railroad and side street reconstruction.

• U.S. 59 San Jacinto, $190 million — With a complete reconstructionof6mi.alongU.S.59,thisprojectwillconsist of the construction of three concrete main-lanes, two concrete frontage road lanes in each direction, and the replacement of 23 bridges. Construction will begin in January 2024 with an end date in 2028.

• U.S. 75 Collin County, $58.5 million — This freeway operational improvement project of the traffic barrier, signage, illumination and pavement markings will take place along 17 mi. of roadway. Work will begin in January 2024.

• Lubbock County Woodrow Road, $37.9 million — The 2.5-mi. project will reconstruct and widen an existing two-lane FM roadway into four lanes with a dedicated left turn lane from Indiana Avenue to U.S. Highway 87 in south Lubbock County. This roadway is the main corridor for the Lubbock Cooper Independent School District, and with the reconstruction of the roadway, traffic flow and safety will be improved for those in the district. Work will begin in October 2023 and estimated to be completed in 2025.

• IH-27 Bridge Replacement, $24.3 million — With the demo and reconstruction of three existingbridgesonIH-27,thisprojectwillfacilitatecargomovementintoandaroundLubbock, Texas. Because this area is a cargo route, two of the bridges must remain open to facilitate the movement of cargo, therefore each bridge must be demoed and rebuilt separately from the others.

• U.S. 59 Wharton, $7.1 million — This TxDOT Safety Improvement project that will consist of installing a single slope concrete barrier wall in the median to separate the northbound and southbound traffic. With the Hydraulically Efficient Barrier wall it will also maintain positive drainage should flooding occur in the 100-year floodplain portion of the highway.

• IH-635 Dallas County, $4.2 million — Planned to begin in October and last eight months, the barrier rail project includes the installation of 4.59 mi. of new median barrier to improve the safety for those in the surrounding area.

Webber, a Ferrovial construction U.S. subsidiary, specializes in heavy civil, waterworks, energy and infrastructure services, dedicatedtosafelyprovidingintelligentsolutionsto its clients and community. Webber is currently working on more than 50 construction projects and managing 40 infrastructure maintenance contracts in North America. 

CGAInitiativeReleasesPILOT:NewVisionaryGISCaseStudy

Common Ground Alliance (CGA), the national nonprofit trade association dedicated to protecting underground utility lines, people who dig near them and their communities, recently released a groundbreaking case study as part of its Next Practices Initiative titled “PILOT: Improving Efficiency and Reducing Damages by Providing Ticket-Level Visualizations of Underground Facilities to Designers, Locators and Excavators.”

The case study introduces the ambitious Minnesota Utilities Mapping Project (MUMP), which aims to provide real-time, ticket-level mapped visualizations of underground utilities to accredited designers, locators and excavators to improve the damage prevention system’s efficiency and outcomes. The pilot project leveraged widely accessible technology to create a first-of-itskind tool that has the potential to revolutionize viewing of underground utility maps for major stakeholder groups.

The pilot program was led by Gopher State One Call (GSOC) with input from the Minnesota Geospatial Advisory Council to address the persistent challenge of inaccurate or incomplete maps, which contribute to a significant number of damages to buried utilities.

The pilot program uses an open-source software solution that connects to the GSOC ticketing system and captures all relevant ticket information, including the geographic area indicated on the ticket. The program then returns a digital report of the area of interest in the form of a visualization of buried facility data, which can be accessible to end users, including designers, locators, excavators and others, for the life of the 811 ticket.

“We are proud to have designed a scalable tool that will improve the safety of industry stakeholders and communities, as well as the longevity of our vital underground infrastructure,” said Barb Cederberg, chief oper-

ations officer of Gopher State One Call.

“We’re excited about the possibilities that this technology has to improve damage outcomes as we look to build out the program on a state and then possibly national level.”

This case study was documented by CGA’s Next Practices Initiative, which seeks to encourage innovation and new practices to address the most critical challenges facing the damage prevention industry. The Next Practices Initiative identified “pursuing an accurate, accessible GIS-based mapping system/database,” as one of the opportunities for improvement in the damage prevention system with the greatest potential return on investment for the industry. In an effort to encourage the deployment of new technology, CGA provided a small grant to MUMP to help develop an open-source software module for broader use based on the unprecedented pilot program.

“The Next Practices Initiative is a critical component of CGA’s efforts to recognize

and address areas of improvement in damage prevention, while also promoting groundbreaking technologies and innovations that can help us overcome our most pressing challenges,” said Sarah K. Magruder Lyle, president and CEO of Common Ground Alliance.

“This case study highlights the power of Next Practices in driving positive change within our stakeholder industries, and we encourage all stakeholders to work on furthering technologies and targeted strategies to help us achieve our ‘50 in 5’industry goal to cut damages in half over the next five years.”

VolvoCEAnnouncesChanges, StrengthensLeadershipTeam

On the Horizon... Construction Job Sites Will See Digital Transformation

Technology has been evolving quickly, and it isn’t stopping anytime soon. As a result, the equipment used on job sites has evolved to meet the ever-changing needs of the construction professionals, and the industry must find ways to adopt these new technologies in order to be successful.

In recent years, there has been talk of an oncoming digital transformation coming to the job site — and while there are some components of this transformation that have yet to be realized, in many ways the industry’s digital transformation has already begun.

ance in real time. This is currently happening, whether in the cloud or through interconnected apps. There are a variety of sources in which digitalization is present, and it’s a concept that has been at work in the industry for years in some shape or form.

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has announced a number of changes to its executive management team (EMT) with three senior appointments designed to strengthen its global leadership and transformation journey.

All three appointments will support the company’s leading cultural, sustainable and technological transformation, while demonstrating the expertise and dynamism that is

already embedded across all regions of Volvo CE.

Melker Jernberg, head of Volvo CE, said, “Our leadership team will be greatly strengthened with the addition of Scott, Mats and Jay, as they join during a significant time of change for our industry. With their diverse experience, cross-functional understanding and genuine passion, I have no doubt we will continue to lead our companys sustainable transformation going forward.”

As the new head of Volvo CE Region NorthAmerica, ScottYoung will continue to oversee the strategic direction of one of the largest markets for construction equipment and will be responsible for meeting its customers’ diverse needs. He has assumed the role from Stephen Roy who recently took on a new position within the Volvo Group executive board as president of Mack Trucks.

Mats Sköldberg will replace Thomas Bitter as the new head of technology, leading the development and delivery of Volvo CE’s global technology strategy and continuing the company’s journey into electromobility, connectivity and automation. Meanwhile, Bitter will be heading up the recently announced compact business unit.

Jay Parker, already head of digital and IT for Volvo CE since 2020, also will be joining the EMT. His appointment on the board will bring the company’s digital transformation into renewed focus — demonstrating the increased need for digitalization across every aspect of the business.

In addition to this, Joakim Arndorw has been appointed the new head of Volvo CE sales region international. Arndorw is currently managing director of Swecon Anläggningsmaskiner, the retail operations for Volvo CE in Sweden. Arndorw will be part of Carl Slottes head of sales region Europes management team. During his ConExpo-Con/AGG 2023 educational session, “Digital Transformation of the Job Site,” Jason Anetsberger of AEM member company Komatsu spoke on the technology that is available to us today, as well as where the industry could be headed.

• Automation has been in use for years. However, tech capabilities continue to be siloed. It’s critically important recorded data and automated parts are able to work together, and that all data is able to be recorded and utilized. Automation empowers safer and more optimized job sites by leveraging increasingly automated equipment and processes. This is a reality currently in the form of self-driving personal vehicles, and automated vehicles have been in use for decades in mining.

• Sustainability connects customers with both product level and jobsite level tech to minimize carbon emissions and improve efficiency. Sustainability has been thrust into the spotlight in recent years, and strides can be made with the help of digitalization and automation. Ultimately, jobsite efficiency leads to sustainability, and that can be realized through the digital transformation.

“You see these themes of digitalization, automation and sustainability — in my mind those are not just industry trends, they are a reality today,” said Anetsberger. “And the progression of these trends is the medium in which the digital transformation will take root.”

Adigital transformation in any industry is defined as the process of adopting and implementing new digital technologies in order to enhance current products and services, or to create new products and services. In the construction industry, the digital technologies that will enhance the products and services of the future include automation, digital modeling and smart equipment.

In the equipment manufacturing industry, it is essential that OEMs grow their capabilities and build trust in these new technologies with their end-users.

During his session, Anetsberger outlined the phases of the digital transformation while mapping out what technology is already available to consumers:

• Digitization allows the industry to integrate technology and product offerings to provide customers with data-driven guid-

“When I go to end-users and ask them what the future of the job site looks like, they say automation. And we are progressing in that direction. But what’s just as important is the sophistication and optimization of the jobsite processes,” said Anetsberger. “What good is an autonomous vehicle if it doesn’t know where to go?”

According to Anetsberger, this is the biggest challenge today. Many times, customers give directives verbally, but if the construction industry can get on the same page in terms of digital processes, the digital transformation will occur much more efficiently.

In the future, the construction industry will work toward achieving a job site in which digital tasks are created from the optimal construction plan, and autonomy works in harmony with the machinery on a job site. So much of what we use on a job site currently collects data — from telematics to terrain data. Drones allow for surveying the jobsite accurately. And a worker with a smart phone is the most flexible and perhaps useful information source available, as end-users can take that data and compile it to utilize it to its fullest.

“If we do it right a lot of these solutions are fairly simple and easy to adopt, and the value they bring is almost immediate,” said Anetsberger. 

Tsurumi Boosts Inventory toAid Disaster-StrickenAreas

Preparing for and handling severe rains in NorthAmerica is becoming increasingly challenging. Storms have become stronger, and residents in vulnerable areas are experiencing more frequent flooding and wind damage.

Waterpumpsareessentialtoolsinmitigatingtheeffectsof yard, basement or neighborhood floods. Yet, maintaining inventory in disaster-prone areas can be difficult due to sudden increases in demand.

Over the past few years, Tsurumi America has made meaningful efforts to provide customers with speedy access to pumps when they are most needed. The company monitors developing weather patterns and strategically supplies distributors near the most susceptible areas to help with recovery efforts following a storm.

“Historically at Tsurumi, we have taken pride in having reliable, efficient equipment in stock to meet the immediate and inevitable needs when disaster strikes,” said Ben Houk, portable product manager at TsurumiAmerica.

“We track tropical storms throughout the Gulf of Mexico anduptheEastCoast, aswellasotherweathereventsacross the U.S., and have stocked inventory in strategically placed satellite warehouses to ensure our products are available to those in need. Maintaining inventory levels in these warehouses is key to our response time because, in the aftermath of many of these storms, long-distance shipping becomes a challenge.”

Houk explained that different types of pumps can be used

in flood applications, especially after severe storms or hurricanes.Themaindistinctionliesbetweenelectricsubmersible and engine-driven pumps.

“When a power source is available, electric submersible pumpsarethepreferredsolution,”Houksaid.“Thesepumps provide reliable dewatering capabilities in an extremely efficientmanner.Whenelectricityisaffected, andgeneratorsare not available, engine-driven pumps are the obvious choice. These pumps are capable of rapidly moving large amounts of water but require priming and repeated refueling.”

Several Tsurumi pump and generator series are used in disaster remediation, including:

ï HS semi-vortex electric submersible trash pumps

ï LB top-discharge electric submersible dewatering pumps

ï NK heavy-duty, high-head electric pumps

ï LSC and LSR electric submersible low-level drainage pumps

ï EPT and TE engine-driven trash and dewatering pumps (powered by Honda and Vanguard engines)

ï TPG contractor-grade portable generator (powered by Honda)

“When flooding occurs, fast and efficient dewatering is imperativetopreservingpublicsafetyandminimizingfinancial loss. Those in disaster-stricken areas need dependable products during and after an extreme weather event. Bobcat Company has extended five grants, each worth $50,000, to parksacrossthenationaspartofits partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).

In addition to the grant offering, every park and recreation department that applied for the grant — regardless of receiving the grant or not — will receive a new Bobcat zero-turn mower to help them accomplish more for their community spaces.

“Our commitment to positively impactcommunitiesisingrainedin all of us at Bobcat, and we are humbled to give back to these deserving communities in support of this mission,” said Mike Ballweber, president, Doosan Bobcat North America. “By supporting sustainability efforts today, we can offer a better tomorrow to the generations to come.”

Through Bobcat and NRPA’s shared commitment to creating vibrant and sustainable community park and recreation areas, the grant dollars will support various restoration, sustainability, beautification or enhancement activities at these sites.

The grant recipients’ plans include:

• City of Stonecrest in Stonecrest, Ga.: The city of Stonecrest, located east of Atlanta, plans to develop a walking trail at Everett Park. The new trail aims to encourage community residents to engage with the outdoors and attend the park and recreation department’s programs, which include forest therapy programs, bird watching walks, summer camps, fishing and camping opportunities. The local park and

recreation team will utilize the grant dollars, plus Bobcat equipment for forest mulching, grading and compacting to support development of this new ADA-compliant trail.

• Davidson County Parks and Recreation in Lexington, N.C.: A pollinatorgardenandboggardenis being developed at a newly created park calledYadkin River Park. The project is being led by the Davidson County Parks and Recreation Department in collaboration with the master gardeners of Davidson County, Catawba College Department of Environment and Sustainability, North Carolina state agencies, town of Spencer and Friends of Rowan County. The gardens will demonstrate the resilience of the native bog plants in North Carolina, and it will also protect the surrounding community from adverse effects like water pollution and flooding. Educational signage will be on display for the public and local educators to use these spaces to teach children as they play at the nearby playgrounds. The agencies will work together to plant, mulch, maintain and teach people how these plants help the environment.

• City of Buffalo in Buffalo, N.Y.:The city of Buffalo Parks and Buffalo Niagara River Land Trust are partnering on a 22-acre conservation easement known as Houghton Park. What was once a dumping ground of large broken concrete slabs, bricks and stones, will become an open nature conservation area in a dense urban neighborhood overlooking the Buffalo River. The project team will leverage compact equipment

Wirtgen Cold Milling Machine Performs in Narrow Spaces

Wirtgen’s high-performance W 150 F(i) rounds off the top end of the compact milling machine class.

With a milling width of 6 ft., this model is an ideal choice for use on major construction sites with restricted space, for example in inner city locations. Compact dimensions and optimized machine weight for easy transportation means these machines are predestined for a multitude of different construction site scenarios. In combination with the intuitive operating design, digital assistance systems and the LEVEL PRO ACTIVE leveling system allow for efficient one-man operation.

Environmentally-Friendly Engine Technology From John Deere

The agile front loader with a standard working width of 5 ft. features the latest and currently most eco-friendly engine technology compliant with EU Stage 5 / U.S. Tier IV Final exhaust emission standards. The 9-liter John Deere engine offers a maximum rated output of 315 kW and has been specially adapted to meet the special needs of cold milling applications. It’s impressive with its high torque and simultaneously low noise emissions under all load conditions.

The machine’s fuel consumption also is significantly lower, even when delivering the highest milling performance and milling to a maximum working depth of 330 mm, the manufacturer said.

Digital Assistance, Leveling Systems

Mill Assist, Wirtgen Performance Tracker (WPT) and the leveling system LEVEL PRO ACTIVE assist operating personnel and increase milling efficiency. These systems have already provided clear proof of their potential in the other Fseries cold milling machines.

In the case of the W 150 F(i), the largest milling machine in the compact class, users also benefit from higher milling performance, increased efficiency and, due to an automatically-generated construction site report, clearly structured documentation of all site-relevant data.

Mill Assist for Increased Milling Efficiency

In automatic mode, Mill Assist selects the operating strategy with the most favorable balance between milling performance and operating costs. This increases the milling performance while simultaneously reducing diesel fuel and water consumption, pick wear and CO2 emissions.

Mill Assist controls engine speed automatically according to the needs of the operator. The wide range of possible engine speeds means that the machine’s uses are equally broad. The lower speed range enables a significant reduction of diesel fuel consumption and pick wear. In the upper speed range, an optimum milling pattern can be achieved even at higher area performance rates.

The operator can also select one of three performance strategies. These are: “ECO”, “performance-optimized”, and “milling pattern quality.” This makes it possible, for example, to pre-define the required milling pattern quality incrementally from coarse to very fine at the press of a button.

Precise Leveling With LEVEL PRO ACTIVE

The LEVEL PROACTIVE leveling system is installed as a standard feature of the W 150 F(i). Developed by Wirtgen especially for cold milling machines, the leveling system features an intuitive operating design and ensures precise milling results. The machine has an improved basic configuration for the integration of 3D and laser leveling systems and a revised Multiplex system with three-fold scanning.

All sensors and measurement values are displayed in an easy-to-read format on the control panel in order to maximize process efficiency. The system is fully integrated in the control system of the cold milling machine. Important

machine functions are directly interconnected, allowing for a high degree of automation.

Modern Cockpit, Also Available With Enclosed Cabin

The operator’s platform is characterized by ergonomically-designed control elements with high-quality haptics and maximum ease of operation. The machine’s laterallyadjustable operator’s platform ensures an excellent view along the zero-clearance side.

Acamera/monitor system with two to six cameras enables an ideal overview of areas that are otherwise hard to see from the operator’s platform. The 5-in. control screen in the multifunctional armrest displays all machine-relevant information. The optional enclosed cabin minimizes the negative effects of noise, dust, and other site-related irritants on the operator and provides a comfortable working environment.

Wirtgen Cutting Technology Reduces Toolholder Wear

The cold milling machine W 150 F(i) is equipped with the wear-resistant quick-change HT22 toolholder system with the field-proven top part HT22 PLUS. In combination with the new Generation X² round-shank picks, this reduces toolholder wear by up to 25 percent. Customers benefit from longer pick replacement intervals and the ability to quickly and easily change picks on-the construction site.

The quick-change system for milling drums, MCS (Multiple Cutting System), enables rapid adjustment of working width and ensures outstanding flexibility.

Rosco, a LeeBoy company, displayed the new electric Maximizer 2 Distributor at ConExpo 2023. The machine is designed to give users consistent, reliable heat for spraying emulsion, but also do so in a way that helps contractors reduce their carbon footprint.

“We wanted to take the proven performance of our Maximizer 2 Distributor and enhance it for current and future market demand,” Chris Broome, senior product manager at LeeBoy said. “A lot of what you see on the Electric Maximizer2isaresultoftheprovenperformancetheindustry is familiar with, engineered for electric heating.”

The Electric Maximizer 2 features a 13 kWgenerator that powers two 6,000 Watt heating elements that maintain the heat of the material inside the tank. The machine does not require an additional battery, and has proven performance with the generator that is being used as it is the same generator featured in the LeeBoy 8520 asphalt pavers.

“Thismachinewasspecificallydesignedtoreducetheuse of diesel and help contractors lower their carbon footprint,” Broome said. “We are taking power off of the engine and converting it into electricity for the two heating elements.”

Flameless, Reliable Heat Equals Improved Productivity

Not only is this flameless heat reliable, it will also help contractors improve their productivity each day, the manufacturer said.

“With flame type burners, whether they’re propane or diesel, youcan’theatwhileyou’redrivingandoneofthebig bonuses with the Electric Maximizer 2 is you’ll be able to run the generator to heat or maintain heat while you’re driving to the job site,” Broome said. “This will all but eliminate the downtime needed to heat material once you’ve arrived at the job site.”

Oncethetruckispoweredoffforthenight, themachineis plugged into 240 VAC (50 Amp) single phase shop power. The electric elements will maintain material temperature without the use of diesel.

“The material temperature is thermostatically controlled so it’s only heating when it needs to, keeping the material at the target temperature at all times,” Broome said.

Both the radio remote control and object detection are currently available for select BOMAG conventional single drum rollers andwillbeexpandedtoadditionalmodelsin the future.

Theroadtofullyautonomousoperationof a single drum roller is achieved in stages by various technologies. The first stage is the automation interface plus special ROBOMAG software that enables a remote connection to the roller. The next stage allows for the operator to control the roller off-site without visual contact. This type of operation, office controlled machine, also is currently feasible, and the ROBOMAG single drumrollercanbeequippedwiththistypeof operation.

required to test and develop a fully autonomous roller. Machine and technology design allows it to flexibly operate through bothmanualandautonomouscontrol, andits compact design affords efficient work at confined job sites, the manufacturer said.

The ROBOMAG BW 177 features an automation interface, which equips the roller for close-range remote control. This affords the operator complete roller remote

The final stage to fully autonomous operation is a single drum roller guided by advanced computer software with no human intervention. With all the safety systems installed on the ROBOMAG BW 177, BOMAG is preparing the machine to be operated by different types of controls, including fully autonomous operation. This last development stage requires significantly more advanced technologies, such as automatic shutdowns, special camera systems and reliably secured systems that remove all potential safety risks.

Construction Progressing at Sempra’s PortArthur LNG

Major earth work operations are ongoing at the massive construction site for the $13 billion Phase 1 of the LNG terminal that Bechtel is constructing for Sempra Infrastructure, a unit of Sempra Energy, in Port Arthur along the Texas coast, aprojectthatisexpectedtobecompletedoverthenext several years.

Earth work and site prep began in 2022, with construction starting after the full notices were given to proceed on engineering, procurement and construction (EPC).

The construction site is a hive of activity, with the area divided into subsections, each with their own functions. Many of the subsections have large crawler cranes at work. Operators also are utilizing excavators, backhoes, dump trucks, dozers and other large pieces of iron.

Construction activities included site preparation; Entergy Substationpadconstruction;dredgingforPioneerDocksand MOF; test piling; monitoring, maintaining and documenting stabilization efforts for the currently completed facilities and all newly disturbed project areas.

The construction activity summary noted that ground disturbing activities were conducted in relation to future project facilities and construction of the future Entergy Substation pad and access roads continued.

Bechtelcontinuedtomobilizeequipmentandpersonnelto the project site, conduct safety and environmental training, conduct clearing and grubbing activities, soil stabilization and dewatering of inundated areas, according to the project report.

Withamplespace, crewsareabletopursuetheirschedules and they have plenty of room to set up piles of earth and rock that is collected on a regular basis. Earth work crews are preparing the sites for the installation of pipes and underground infrastructure and future buildings with concrete foundations.

Equipment paired with GPS ensures that specifications for foundations are met. The facility, which has many components, are linked via pipes, electrical systems and safety featurestodealwithemergencies.Theinternalroadnetwork, which is being laid out, will ensure that personnel can access various buildings and storage sites.

Theconstructionscheduleisbasedonphasestomaximize areas for layout yards, materials storage facilities, field offices and other construction needs. The temporary construction roads reflect the plan of attack. The work site itself is close to existing port facilities and gas and oil storage tanks.

As the work site is adjacent to the Gulf of Mexico, it could be impacted by hurricanes and Bechtel has developed plans to deal with hurricane evacuations and shutting down construction when storms do hit the area.

“We’re proud to partner with Sempra to deliver a worldclassLNGfacility,”saidBrendanBechtel,chairman/CEOof Bechtel. “Building from mature, scalable energy technologies helps safeguard our energy supplies and promote the transition to lower-carbon energy. Bechtel has a record of delivering LNG infrastructure on the U.S. Gulf Coast and bringingqualityjobsandtrainingopportunitiestolocalcommunities. The 5,000 construction jobs this project creates will provide outstanding opportunities for craft professionals — growing a skilled workforce that will benefit the region for years to come.”

Site preparation — site clearing, grubbing, stripping, soil

stabilization activities, piling and maintenance of ECD’s — is moving ahead. In preparation for later work, Bechtel has received deliveries of concrete piles by road and water and has started driving piles in areas of the Train 1 main pipe rack.

Dredging and survey activities have been completed at Pioneer Dock 1 and dredging began at the MOF area. The project also includes the construction of roads and a future Entergy substation pad, which have already commenced.

Since securing the project, the engineering and construction giant awarded Port Arthur LNG contracts to Air Products, Elliott, and Great Lakes Dredge & Dock.

The monthly status report provides a good summary of the work that is being done.

“Construction related activities during the reporting period included maintenance and site clearing, grubbing, stripping activities, and hauling spoil materials offsite,” it stated. “Additionally, dewatering of these areas continued. Construction of the future Entergy Substation and access roads continued. Mobilization to the site continued by Bechtel personnel. Environmental and safety training was conducted for all new personnel, prior to site construction activities. Site environmental inspections continued. One environmental noncompliance was issued. No safety or lost time accidents occurred during the reporting period. PALNG hosted a community wide ‘meet and greet’event for citizens and vendors in the Port Arthur/Sabine Pass area that was very well attended. The site received approximately 8.2 inches of rain duringApril.”

Project permits are being approved.

“PALNG continued working with FERC staff regarding a variance request for the relocation of a concrete batch plant to the Lease Dock area,” stated the report. “PALNG submitted a nationwide Permit No.13 preconstruction notification application to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-Galveston District for approval of a design modification to the south loading berth.”

PALNG personnel ensured compliance with permit conditions.

The safety of the crews is a high priority for Bechtel.

“Minor, non-reportable safety incidents occurred during this reporting period,” stated the report. “However, there were no health-related issues, landowner complaints, agency inspections, or reportable spills for this reporting period. One environmental noncompliance was issued, and corrective actions taken. PALNG will continue to inspect construction related activities per the PALNG Environmental Plan.”

Busy days have more than 100 Bechtel and subcontractor employees on-site. Local and regional subcontractors are being brought in.

With so much equipment on-site, Bechtel and its subcontractors are keen to ensure they operate efficiently and that repairs are completed rapidly. The large work site allows for the establishment of maintenance yards to do repairs and store replacement parts.

About Port Arthur LNG

Kubota Awards $600,000 in Its 2023 ‘Kubota Hometown Proud’ Grants

Kubota continues its commitment to invest in hometowns across America with its Kubota Hometown Proud community grant program, awarding $600,000 in grants to five deserving communities.

Kubota Hometown Proud is an annual grant program that encourages municipalities and nonprofit organizations to partner with their local Kubota dealership to apply for grant funding consideration.

This year, the program launched a call-for-entries in April and received nearly 800 applications before Kubota selected its five $100,000 regional grant winners. Then in August, all five community revitalization projects were put up for a public vote to determine one lucky “Community Choice Grant” winner to receive an additional $100,000, which ultimately was awarded to Lucasville Community Park, a new park concept for a small town in Ohio that needed a community gathering place.

“Kubota is proud to give back to the communities where our dealers live and work,” said Todd Stucke, senior vice president of Kubota North America, and senior vice president of marketing, product support & strategic projects of Kubota Tractor Corporation.

“This year, the Kubota Hometown Proud grant program saw applicants from nearly every state in the country. We are incredibly honored to support this year’s projects and hope our funding and equipment will assist in bringing each winner’s vision to life to serve each hometown for many years to come.”

The 2023 Kubota Hometown Proud Grant Program winners include:

• Lucasville Community Park (Lucasville, Ohio): Every hometown needs a community gathering space, and that is what this project is all about: Together with their local Kubota dealer, Ricer Equipment, Lucasville Community Park is the 2023 Community Choice grant recipient. The $200,000 will be used to build an amphitheater and construct the next phase of the park that consists of building a ¼ mi. paved walking path to make the space accessible to all.

• BlackFarms,FoodandFamilies Project(Lebanon,Tenn.): The Black Farms, Food and Families project, in partnership with Absolute Kubota, the

New Farmer Academy at Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Tennessee State University (TSU), will use a Kubota Hometown Proud Grant to build an educational greenhouse, to help revitalize minority interest in agriculture through an heirloom “seed-tofeed” project.

• The Children’s Village (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho): “Every family deserves a village” is the belief of Children’s Village, a trauma-responsive safe haven providing crisis youth housing and family support services. PartneringwiththeirlocalKubotadealer, Coeur D’Alene Tractor, The Children’s Village applied for and won a 2023 Kubota Hometown Proud grant of $100,000.

• Hunger Task Force (West Milwaukee, Wis.): Hunger Task Force, Milwaukee’s Free & Local food bank, is a unique program that includes a 208-acre urban farm that grows fresh produce for local families. The Farm is supported by 5,000 volunteers and equipment from their local Kubota dealer, Lochen Equipment and the

Kubota Hometown Proud Grant will help to purchase much-needed equipment for the farm.

• The Giving Grove (Dallas, Texas): The Giving Grove community orchard program helps volunteers install and maintain fruit trees and berry bushes that provide a free source of fresh food for urban neighborhoods. With the support of Schaffer Kubota, this grant will allow GROW North Texas to purchase a truck and landscape trailer to transport trees and supplies to the 24 existing orchard sites around the region.

Kubotaishonoredtoinvestinhometowns across America and help make sustainable impacts for the future — from building agriculture centers and barns, to supporting community gardens and vocational farming programs — which is exactly what the brand’s hard-working equipment is built for.To date, the company has awarded $1.2 million in Kubota Hometown Proud grants.

EPA, Department of Army Amend 2023 ‘Waters of the United States’Final Rule

On Aug. 29, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of the Army (the agencies) announced a final rule amending the 2023 definition of “waters of the United States” to conform with the recent Supreme Court decision in Sackett v. EPA.

The agencies are committed to following the law and implementing the Clean Water Act to deliver the essential protections that safeguard the nation’s waters from pollution and degradation. This action provides the clarity that is needed to advance these goals, while moving forward with infrastructure projects, economic opportunities and agricultural activities.

“While I am disappointed by the Supreme Court’s decision in the Sackett case, EPA and Army have an obligation to apply this decision alongside our state co-regulators, Tribes and partners,” said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan.

“We’ve moved quickly to finalize amendments to the definition of ‘waters of the United States’ to provide a clear path forward that adheres to the Supreme Court’s ruling. EPA will never waver from our responsibility to ensure clean water for all. Moving forward, we will do everything we can with our existing authorities and resources to help communities, states and Tribes protect the clean water upon which we all depend.”

“We have worked with EPA to expeditiously develop a rule to incorporate changes required as a result of the Supreme Court’s decision in Sackett,” said Michael L. Connor, assistant secretary of the Army for Civil Works.

“With this final rule, the Corps can resume issuing approved jurisdictional determinations that were paused in light of the Sackett decision. Moving forward, the Corps will continue to protect and restore the nation’s waters in support of jobs and healthy communities.

While EPA’s andArmy’s 2023 rule defining “waters of the United States” was not directly before the Supreme Court, the decision in Sackett made clear that certain aspects of the 2023 rule are invalid. The amendments issued Aug. 29 are limited and change only parts of the 2023 rule that are invalid under the Sackett v. EPAdecision. For example, the final rule removes the significant nexus test from consideration when identifying tributaries and other waters as federally protected.

The Supreme Court’s Decision in Sackett v. EPA, issued on May 25, 2023, created uncertainty for Clean Water Act implementation. The agencies are issuing this amendment to the 2023 rule expeditiously — three months after the Supreme Court decision — to provide clarity and a path forward consistent with the ruling.

With this action, the Army Corps of Engineers will resume issuing all jurisdictional determinations. Because the sole purpose of this rule is to amend specific provisions of the 2023 Rule that are invalid under Sackett, the rule will take effect immediately.

The agencies will work with state, Tribal and local partners to safeguard waters in need of protection following the Sackett v. EPAdecision and will continue to use all available

tools to protect public health and provide clarity for stakeholders.

The agencies will host a public webinar on Sept. 12, 2023, to provide updates on the definition of “waters of the United States.” For registration information, visit EPA’s webpage for the amendments rule. The agencies also plan to host listening sessions this fall with co-regulators and stakeholders, focusing on identifying issues that may arise outside this limited rule to conform the definition of “waters of the United States” with the Sackett v. EPA decision.

Learn more about this action on EPA’s “waters of the United States” website.

Background

On Jan. 18, 2023, the agencies published a final rule revising the definition of “waters of the United States”, which became effective on March 20, 2023. On May 25, 2023, the Supreme Court issued a decision in the case of Sackett v. EPA.

The Clean Water Act prohibits the discharge of pollutants from a point source into “navigable waters” unless otherwise authorized under the Act. “Navigable waters” are defined in the Act as “the waters of the United States, including the territorial seas.” Thus, “waters of the United States” is a threshold term establishing the geographic scope of federal jurisdiction under the Clean Water Act. The term “waters of the United States” is not defined by the Act but has been defined by the agencies in regulations since the 1970s and jointly implemented in the agencies’ respective programmatic activities.

American Road & Transportation Builders Association

“After eight years of litigation, five contradictory regulatory actions spanning three administrations, hundreds of thousands of public comments and one Supreme Court decision, EPA’s rule spurns the opportunity to deliver a lasting solution to protect the nation’s wetlands and brazenly hands this responsibility back to the courts,” saidARTBAPresident and CEO Dave Bauer.

“We are back to square one.”

Associated Builders and Contractors

“Unfortunately, these revisions fail to fully implement the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Sackett v. Environmental Protection Agency, which placed clear boundaries on the scope of the federal government’s authority while maintaining reasonable environmental protections for America’s waterways,” said Vice President of Regulatory, Labor and State Affairs Ben Brubeck.

“Instead, this rule, issued without meaningful opportunities for input from the construction industry and other stakeholders, will contribute to continued regulatory uncertainty and unnecessary delays for critical infrastructure projects across the nation. ABC urges the Biden administration to issue broader revisions to WOTUS in full compliance with the Supreme Court’s decision.” 

solar grids at interchanges in just three counties.

The open space between busy traffic does not support wildlife, but in places like southern California it does get a lot of direct sunlight. In fact, Environment California and The Ray found that highway interchanges and off-ramps offer ideal installation sites.

Across the state, that adds up to “almost a gigawatt of potential solar power just from empty land,” the two organizations found.

Tracking Positives

An article from electric vehicle news site electrek.co also cited the fact that these neutral spaces are often situated near transmission lines.

State ownership, noted electrek, makes these sites easier to develop than “contracting and leasing for land, building transmission lines and so on.”

Clean energy advocates Steven King and David Peters say there are other benefits to installing solar grids on highway neutral sites. Locating at these spots contributes to a clean energy future, said King, of Environment California and Peters with The Ray. They can mitigate the effects of extreme heat on the electric grid in place, the two told advocacy federation Environment America.

Paired with battery storage systems, they said, these fields “can continue providing clean energy to the electric grid even after the sun sets.”

The technology also can save money and generate revenue at the state level, said King and Peters. It “presents an opportunity for California to generate revenue while saving money by reducing ongoing roadside maintenance expenses.”

When solar developers maintain their sites along highways, maintenance costs drop for the state. Finally, utilizing these areas to develop solar power leverages existing highways to full productivity, said the two advocates.

FHWA noted in 2021 guidance that these projects also reduce pollution and greenhouse gasses, promote energy security and foster green jobs.

Additionally, the Biden administration considers repurposing rights-of-way for energy infrastructure to be a “netzero game changer” that can help the country meet its climate goals.

Leading Charge

In 2021, FHWAsuggested states adopt legislation in favor of utilizing land along the interstates in this way.

The Ray mapped such opportunities on a national level and noted several states, including Georgia, Oregon, Maine, Pennsylvania and Maryland have seen the light. And the sites don’t require massive spans of acreage to shine. In west Georgia, a 4-acre stretch on the shoulder of I-85 has been transformed.

Currently generating energy through 2,600 solar panels, the site was established by The Ray working with state organizations.

Allie Kelly, executive director, told the Columbus, Ga., Ledger-Enquirer that The Ray seeks to combine transportation land and energy needs. The idea is to create clean energy from utilization of the green turf along highways.

“Georgia alone has 19,000 suitable acres for right-of-way solar installation,” Kelly told the Ledger- Enquirer. “This is empty land that the public owns. Using that land for solar is simple and elegant.”

Though the campaign in Georgia is not the only one of its

kind, the fact that it’s a collaboration among multiple agencies makes it unique. The state entities came together with The Ray to develop a one-megawatt project featuring native plants and pollinator gardens. The site also encourages bees to perform their pollinating magic under cover of the solar panels.

Kelly said the project had its challenges: “It was like crawling over broken glass to get [the project] done at times.”

In fact, it “nearly died and had to be resuscitated, because the Federal Highway Administration did not have a unified vision” back then, she said.

“Our pain developed a national plan for the FHWAto create consistency vand conformity of how it would treat these projects.”

The Georgia project became a model for the FHWA to set a consistent national program to encourage and support these types of projects, said Kelly.

Tina Hodges, an FHWAenvironmental protection specialist, and Amy Plovnick, a USDOT community planner, foresee technological advances. The two tracked solar highway infrastructure programs across the country and highlighted advanced DOT programs for an article in Public Roads magazine.

They found that once Maine DOT got on board, the result was three solar projects in Augusta, Maine, developed with Central Main Power. The three will generate eight megawatts of energy, enough to power 1,850 homes and reduce state electricity costs by $5.5 million over the next 20 years.

They should reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 8 million lbs. annually, the equivalent of 8,393 barrels of oil. Instead of shelling out funds to mow green turf, the Maine DOT receives $56,000 a year from the solar developer, Synergy, who leases the property.

In 2007, Oregon directed state agencies to meet 100 percent of their electrical needs in renewable energy by 2025. That pushed the state DOT to implement the first large-scale solar roadway projects in the country as demonstration projects, noted Hodges and Plovnick.

By the next year, the state completed a 104-kilowatt, 594panel project at the interchange of I-5 and I-25 outside of Portland, Ore. Because of a successful deal with Portland General Electric on that site, four years later the partners installed a large-sale project at a rest area along I-5. A 1.75megawatt project, it features nearly 7,000 solar panels on a 7-acre state-owned site. The solar field produces about 2 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy each year.

Massachusetts DOT researched the potential of ROW solar in 2012, identifying and vetting approximately 60 potential sites in the process. A contract was awarded two years later for a 6-megawatt solar ROW project across multiple locations.

The majority of Massachusetts ROW sites are along the state turnpike, I-90. One site is located on Route 3 in Plymouth.

“MassDOT’s solar projects were public-private partnerships and required no upfront funding from the state,” said Hodges and Plovnick.

The state leased the sites to the developer for 20 years and agreed to purchase all the energy generated through power purchase agreements (PPA).

“MassDOT also benefits from a net metering policy in which the agency receives credits on identified utility accounts,” the two said. “The developer benefits from the

guaranteed sale of electricity to MassDOT and through state renewable energy credits and federal tax incentives.”

As of August 2018, the eight sites combined produced 10,750 megawatt-hours of electricity, saving MassDOT more than $1 million. The state agency expects to save approximately $525,000 annually, in addition to $75,000 coming in from annual lease payments.

Maryland DOT began installation of solar power at 35 MDOT sites including buildings and parking lots. The state agency licensed land to the developer who constructed, owns, operates and maintains the renewable energy infrastructure.

“MDOT will buy power at a fixed rate for 20 to 25 years, and expects electricity cost savings of 30 to 40 percent,” said Hodge and Plovnick.

In addition, the program is expected to generate 298 construction and 28 operations and maintenance jobs, with more positions added as solar expands.

“This project allows MDOT to save money, support jobs and create a renewable energy source,” said Pete K. Rahn, then Maryland transportation secretary.

The 35 sites generate 46,000 megawatt-hours per year, or approximately 12 percent of the state’s annual electricity usage. The energy will be used at MDOT facilities or by neighboring residents or businesses that are part of Maryland’s Community Solar Pilot Program.

Full Federal Support

This past spring, the fed added $2.5 billion to the $5 billion in place to support installation of electric chargers every 50 miles of interstate.

Kelly sees forward movement: “The transportation sector is now intertwined with the energy sector,” she said. FHWAfully supports highway renewable energy. Through resource development and workshop funding, the agency encourages information sharing.

Early right-of-way solar users and those exploring renewables provide lessons based on their experiences for those considering future options.

“By sharing their challenges and successes with their peers, state DOTs are learning from each other,” said FHWA. Most state renewable energy projects are ground-mounted panels along the right-of-way (ROW) and on the roofs of carports and buildings at rest areas. Some small wind turbines can be spotted at rest areas. FHWA foresees solar roadway surfaces, photovoltaic noise barriers and under-bridge turbines.

“As technologies advance, opportunities may arise to incorporate additional types of renewable energy beyond pilot projects,” Hodges and Plovnick said.

Examples include solar roadway surfaces, photovoltaic noise barriers, tidal turbines under bridges or micro-wind turbines.

“We’re thrilled to see DOTs generating clean, renewable energy on their properties where feasible,” said Michael Culp, FHWA sustainability team leader. “This gives us an opportunity to help them save money and also protect the natural environment.”

In fact, FHWAoffers resources designed to aid state DOTs in developing renewable energy projects, including solar power infrastructure. As interest in right-of-way renewable energy grows at the state level and available technologies expand, the agency plans to be visible and accessible to DOTs.  CEG 1

HEAVY MACHINERY

SmallBizGrowstoBecomeMasterDistributorforMorooka

In recent years, the demand among contractors for more compact construction equipment has increased dramatically in the United States, with no signs of slowing down.

As part of that market expansion, builders and machine operators also have discovered how well a line of smaller, more maneuverable rubber-track carriers can bring more efficiency to their job sites, while also combining better traction with a high load capacity.

One of the trailblazers in bringing these types of versatile equipment to market in North America is Morooka USA, a master distributor of Japan’s Morooka Co Ltd. The U.S. distributor, based in Ashland, Va., just north of Richmond, supplies its versatile machines to approximately 150 dealers across the United States and Canada.

A related company, Morooka America LLC, owned by the Japanese conglomerate, serves as the exclusive American manufacturing plant for the rubber-track carriers, and also is located in Ashland. The more than 80,000-sq.-ft. factory makes 16 Morooka products, including various-sized utility machines and rotators, as well as rubber-track carriers with HST hydraulic systems. The facility builds approximately 300 machines a year.

Morooka Finds Perfect American Partners

After Morooka had imported its machines to United States for many years, by the early 2000s, its Japanese leadership realized that distribution efforts in America were not performing to the level that they had hoped.

At the same time, a pair of brothers, Ronnie and Kenneth Byrd, were running Wakita Distribution, a construction equipment parts warehouse started in 1998 in the Richmond area.

“When we were operating Wakita, we found a niche in supplying used Yanmar equipment parts to the U.S. market, and that led us to Morooka,” said Ken Byrd. “At that time, most machines in the country were imported from Japan used, so there was an almost immediate need for parts for that equipment. Morooka was aware of our success with

Yanmar, so they asked us to distribute their products here in the U.S. as a master distributor and we signed an agreement with the company in 2003.”

In the early days of the collaboration with Morooka, Ken Byrd, now president of Morooka USA, said they slowly built the dealership network from scratch.

“It was a clean slate for us to develop the U.S market because we had no dealers in the beginning,” he said. “Between 2005 and 2009, we had the territory east of the Mississippi River and Morooka controlled everything to the west through its Portland, Ore., office.”

After Morooka Japan had reached the point where it was confident in the Byrds’ ability to build a dealer network, the overseas equipment manufacturer struck another deal with the Virginia-based company to build product close to Morooka USA’s operations. The Japanese conglomerate later decided to run the Morooka America factory itself in 2019.

Product Lines Built to Be Adaptable

During its early years as a distributor, Ken and his partners, Ronnie Byrd and Yoshi Tanaka, learned that the pipeline industry could be an excellent market for Morooka products, leading them to target and obtain their first dealers and customers from pipeline installation companies in the South.

Morooka carriers also are easily adaptable to multiple segments of the construction industry beyond pipeline work. Its machines can add cabs to the trailers, attach different rigs to the beds, or remove the beds entirely to suit any type of project.

Early on, Byrd said, Morooka USAexclusively represented Morooka’s dump carrier line, with the flatbed being the only option available to customers.

“Along the way there would be the occasional contractor who wanted to do something different with our standard machine and as long as he could mount it to a flatbed or to the back of a machine on its own platform, he could do what he wanted with his Morooka,” he said. “Our early successes at offering products that could be more versatile came about when the pipeline industry began adapting our traditional flatbeds to mount small core drilling, sandblast and welding rigs for on-site use.

“Later, in 2012, we saw a real need to make our machines more customizable when we wanted to become a player in the utility industry,” he added. “The various OEMs that we do business with today were frustrated at that time with the carrier makers that would only offer one machine, one size and one style. We took a different approach to that and, rather

than say, ‘We have one machine; it has to fit your need,’ we decided to work with these manufacturers by building custom frames and mounting options to fit what they needed. I think some of our competitors are now following our lead and trying to do the same thing.”

Now, Byrd said, Morooka products are excellent rental machines for their dealers, adding “the return on investment from the dealers’perspective has been they are about the best in their fleets, making them a very attractive addition to their equipment lineup.”

Machines Designed to Work in Challenging Environments

The middle of the Morooka product line, according to Byrd, has the maker’s current best-selling models, with carrying capacities of between 24,000 lbs. to 35,000 lbs. — what he calls “the strength of our entire line.” Among that group are the Morooka MST-1500VD rubber-track and utility carriers, and the MST-2200VD rubber-track model, all made in the Virginia facility, and noted for offering low ground pressure and perfect for working off-road in more boggy areas.

“Their undercarriages use a floating bogie system that distributes the weight of the load across the entire track and the total ground pressure,” he said.

The manufacturer also builds a rotator model, the Morooka MST-700VDR, a cutting-edge rotating dump carrier built with reliability and durability in mind. The machine has proven to be ideal for transporting loads across rough terrain and challenging environments.

Additionally, the MST-700VDR features a powerful rotating system that allows the operator to easily maneuver in tight spaces.

“The top structure rotates 360 degrees independently from the tracks so you can pull into a spot, turn the top around, dump your load, and drive out without moving the tracks and disturbing the ground further,” said Ken Byrd’s son, David, Morooka USA’s marketing manager, who also handles social media and trade show logistics for the company.

“And the MST-700VDR does provide another level of

Wacker Neuson Introduces DT12p Mini Track Dumper

Wacker Neuson introduced a new mini track dumper with a focus on concrete applications. The DT12p features a 15-cu. ft. poly skip designed to haul liquid concrete. Two skip configurations will be available.

The front tip skip that is designed to get the dump height as low as possible to the ground and the 180-degree swivel skip allows for maximum flexibility and precise placement of the concrete.

In addition to concrete applications, the DT12p with a payload capacity of 1.3 tons is an excellent dumper for smaller material handling jobs that need the advan tages of a tracked machine, the manufacturer said.

Powered by a 23-hp Vanguard gasoline engine and two speed drive sys tem, the DT12p can travel up to 5.6 mph increasing efficiency of

cycle times.

The DT12p is designed for smooth travel while maneuvering across rough terrain and in confined areas. The hydrostatic drive train plays a key role in providing easy and comfortable operation with no gears to change during operation. The rubber tracks with optimal weight distribution reduces ground pressure and prevents damage on sensitive surfaces, as well as providing added stability.

Wacker Neuson’s new DT12p mini track dumper’s compact dimensions are ideal for traveling through narrow passages and the easy operation make it ideal for a variety of applica-

safety on the job site because the operator never has to back up,” Ken Byrd added. “We were among the first manufacturers of track carriers to put cameras in them to help the operators see what they were doing.”

Speedy New Compact Carrier Being Developed

Soon, Morooka will be bringing an exciting new machine to market that David Byrd described as one that its dealers and customers have been requesting. A prototype of the new model was unveiled earlier this year at ConExpo in Las Vegas.

“The MHS1300 High Speed compact carrier has a twoman cab that customers have been asking about and wanting for years,” he said. “It also travels more than twice as fast as your standard Morooka with a top speed of about 17 mph, as opposed to 7 mph.”

The advantage of a higher speed on a rubber track carrier is simple: the ability to traverse big job sites more quickly.

“When you get out there in one of these machines and you have a mile or two to cover on a big flat job site, it gets tiring doing that repeatedly,” David Byrd added. “If, on the other hand, you can do that job two-and-a-half times quicker, you are going to be much more efficient.”

The diesel MHS1300, with a Cat-built engine, will offer a relatively small payload of about 4,000 lbs., but the simplicity of what it will be asked to do — and in a more rapid amount of time — should make it attractive to buyers and renters.

“The nice thing about Morooka is that its machines are simple,” said Ken Byrd. “They have diesel engines made by two manufacturers, Kubota, and Cat, for our U.S. models, plus they have hydraulics and undercarriages, so there is nothing unique about them from a service standpoint.”

Building Morookas Stateside Gets Them to Customers Quicker

The need to build Morooka carriers in the United States, rather than relying on imports from Japan, he said, was to have enough available inventory on hand for the North American market, particularly as the demand for compact equipment shows no signs of diminishing.

“Another advantage to having Morooka products built here rather than in Japan is that it gets them into the U.S. and Canadian dealerships more quickly,” he said. “It only takes about two weeks to build a Morooka, but if it comes from Asia, it ends up spending 30 days at sea, and the shipping cost is higher.”

David Byrd added, “Building the equipment here is also what has allowed us to dive so deeply into the utility market. We have been able to work closely with the OEMs to make changes on the fly when it comes to customization and getting it exactly right for whatever attachments are going on the back of our products.”

Key Contributors to Morooka USA’s Success

The success the Byrd family has enjoyed over the past 25 years in growing from a small parts distribution outfit into a master distributor for a Japanese equipment manufacturer,

complete with an expansive North American dealership base and a Virginia factory, is due in large measure to two other people, as well.

“My other brother, Ronnie, is the managing member of the holding company that owns Morooka USAand Morooka Rents, a small rental outfit that supplies product to our dealers for re-rents whenever either their fleets are maxed out or they do not have a specific size available. He is actively involved in that business,” Ken Byrd said.

“Ronnie is the reason that we have any of the relationships we have with Japan. In the 1980s, he began going over there to bring in used equipment for refurbishing and resale through either an auction or dealer network in the U.S. He also had strong ties with many Japanese companies and had connections to both Morooka and Hitachi.”

In addition, a third partner to Ken and Ronnie Byrd is Yoshi Tanaka, an American citizen born in Kyoto, Japan, who came to this country when he was 20 years old.

“He is now in his seventies, but he is vital to Morooka USA because he knows the business acumen and culture of Japan,” Ken Byrd said. “He was able to make introductions and often lead us onto the correct path in many of the negotiations we had with several Japanese companies over the years, including Morooka. Mr. Tanaka has been an important part of the operations here behind the scenes and key to our discussions and open lines of communication with Morooka Japan.”

AUSAOffers Extensive Range of Site

Dumpers in Lineup of 20 Machines

Contact

AUSA has 20 different models of dumpers in its catalog, with payloads ranging from 2,200 lb./0.74 cu. yds. for the most compact model, up to 22,000 lb./5.1 cu. yds. for the largest one.

The site dumper is a product that is becoming increasingly popular on NorthAmerican job sites. General contractors are starting to see the benefits of these modern machines for the American public, as has long been the case in other markets.

On the surface, site dumpers stand out for being compact in size and having a large skip at the front, but what really makes them so popular is their operating cost efficiency, due to a combination of agility, high payloads and safety.

AUSA, a European manufacturer of compact, all-terrain industrial vehicles, has been designing, manufacturing and selling dumpers since 1961 and is currently a global leader for this type of vehicle.

The company has 20 different models of dumpers in its catalog, with payloads ranging from 2,200 lb./0.74 cu. yds. for the most compact model, up to 22,000 lb./5.1 cu. yds. for the largest one. They are all customizable with a wide variety of accessories to suit virtually any situation.

In terms of product ranges, they are split into three main categories according to their payloads: Firstly, models up to 3,300 lb./1.18 cu. yds., the smallest. These are extremely compact, ranging from 40 to 60 in. wide, depending on the dumper. This range is mainly used in jobs where maneuverability is an important factor. Some examples of applications are residential landscaping, small public works, ditch backfilling, demolitions and concrete work. Their small size also allows them to work indoors.

For larger jobs, AUSA has a mid-range category of dumpers with payloads ranging from 4,400 lb./1.7 cu. yds. to 9,900 lb./3.5 cu. yds. This category includes one of the most popular models in North America, the AUSA D350AHG, a dumper with a 7,700 lb./2.78 cu. yd. payload and a powerful 44 hp engine that allows it to handle any terrain with a gradeability of 54 percent.

The D350AHG site dumper is highly effective for civil engineering and concrete works, with a machine specifically designed for earth moving in off-road conditions. This machine also is perfect for landscaping work and there is even a version available that is equipped with turf tires, which is extremely useful for golf course builders.

At the top of the range, are dumpers with payloads up to 22,000 lb./5.1 cu. yds. for larger job sites where efficiency is a priority, along with maneuverability and machine safety. In this range, the DR601AHG model with 13,200 lb./4.1 cu. yds. is particularly impressive because it also features a reversible driving position: the seat, steering wheel, pedals and dashboard rotate 180 degrees so the driver is always driving forwards. This innovative feature maximizes the driver’s visibility, ensuring greater safety for the entire surrounding area.

This category also includes various versions that are equipped with turf tires. Safety is one of the key aspects of these site dumpers, as most of them are equipped with numerous standard features that make them top of the line vehicles in this segment. One fairly common feature is the electronic negative brake, a parking brake that is automatically engaged when the dumper’s engine is turned off to ensure it comes to a complete standstill.

They also can be equipped with full-view cameras at the front and rear of the machine to view everything that is happening in the vicinity during the operation, or even with a seat with a presence sensor or a seat belt with a buckle sensor. This prevents any unintentional movements and maximizes the safety of the entire job site. Site dumpers are here to stay in North America and more and more industries are taking advantage of their greater cost effectiveness.

CATERPILLAR from page 8

After intensely studying the habits of operators with varying skill levels, Caterpillar introduced its first technology advancement package for the Cat 7495 series shovels in 2016, Operator Assist — Enhanced Motion Control (EMC). This innovation delivered machine protection and simplified operation to boost longevity and improve productivity.

Protecting the dipper, the software automatically limited swing forces when the operator attempted to swing the dipper through the bank. It also safeguarded the crowd ropes and brake, and it prevented boom jacking situations to improve machine cycle times and productivity.

Today, more ERS technologies to improve efficiency and lower costs are being introduced at a faster pace than ever before. This year, Caterpillar launched two new technology packages for ERS models — the Integrated Technology Package (ITP) and OperatorAssist Package (OA).

Eliminating the need for additional in-cab displays from one-off tech packages, ITP and its modules serve as the foundation for launching current and future technologies. It also provides seamless integration and quicker installation of Cat MineStar

Solutions’operational technologies that help to track, monitor and manage the shovel.

OA offers more advanced machine protection and operating simplicity. It features a LiDAR vision system — similar to the technology found on autonomous mining trucks — to scan the front of the shovel, helping to avoid accidental collisions between the dipper and machine.

Cat ERS Models — Moving Mountains

Since the acquisition, Caterpillar has produced more than 200 of the 134.4-ton capac-

ity ERS models in South Milwaukee, initially under the Bucyrus name and now as Caterpillar.

The average lifespan of today’s Cat 7495 shovel is 20 years with machines working in some of the harshest operating conditions around the world, from the subfreezing oil sands of Canada to the arid Chilean deserts whereaverageannualrainfallislessthan1.0in.

From1990to2022,roughly237machines

— both Bucyrus 495 and Cat 7495 series — have moved more than 116 billion tons of material. If this quantity were moved by the 400-ton Cat 797 mining truck, it would have

resulted in 290.1 million truckloads and have takenover13.9millionhourstocomplete,given a 2.88-minute cycle and truck spotting time.

“We are proud of our long heritage in South Milwaukee, the impact the equipment produced at this location has had on the global market over the last 130 years, and the talented and dedicated team continuing the tradition of excellence in the production and support of Cat electric rope shovels and draglines,” said Jeremy Niedens, facility manager — South Milwaukee for Caterpillar.

Bill Hasbrook Jr. Earns DBIA’s LifetimeAchievementAward

The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) announced William G. “Bill” Hasbrook Jr. as the recipient of the prestigious 2023 Brunelleschi Lifetime AchievementAward.

With more than 40 years of dedicated service to the understanding, advancement and effective use of design-build, Hasbrook has left an indelible mark on the industry.

Named after Italian Renaissance architect, engineer and sculptor Filippo Brunelleschi, the Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award is the highest individual honor DBIAbestows.

It is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to the design and construction industry through outstanding leadership and innovation in the advancement of design-build project delivery. Recipients of this award have exhibited originality, vision and breadth over the course of their professional life, with 30 years or more of strong and welldocumented commitment to design-build project delivery.

“Each year, DBIA is proud to recognize an industry leader with the prestigious Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award,” said DBIA National Board Chair Deb Sheehan. “We welcome William Hasbrook to this select group of Brunelleschi winners who have contributed tirelessly to ensuring design-build continues to exemplify the whole-team approach and flexibility that drive high-performing teams and exceptional project outcomes, shifting it from an alternative to a mainstream project delivery method.”

Hailing from New Braunfels, Texas, Hasbrook’s influence spans various industries with a substan-

tialprojectportfolioapproaching $20 billion. He is a dedicated advocate for designbuild, actively championing it, serving at every level at DBIA and receiving the DBIA LeadershipAward in 2010.

Hasbrook’s most significant impact lies in education, where he focuses on cultivating a skilled workforce and engaging with youth outreach programs to ensure the next generation embraces design-build. He’s also been pivotal in spreading designbuild advocacy to the Department of Defense (DOD) through SAME University, teaching the “DesignBuild for DOD Projects” course.

His regional engagement in states like California, Texas, Florida, Alabama and Georgia has furthered design-build’s transformative potential, and his leadership styleencouragesgrowthandexcellence among his peers.

Throughout his career, Hasbrook’s unwavering commit-

ment has played a crucial role in establishing design-build as a leading project delivery method.

On winning the 2023 BrunelleschiAward, Hasbrook said, “Receiving the 2023 Brunelleschi Lifetime Achievement Award is a tremendous honor and the highlight of my lifelong journey of shaping and elevating this transformative approach to project delivery.

Throughout my 40-plus year career, I’ve been unwavering in my commitment to advancing design-build and championing the cause of DesignBuild Done Right, and I wouldn’t be here today without the invaluable contributions of the dedicated professionals I’ve had the privilege to learn from and work with along the way.”

DBIA will honor Hasbrook at DBIA’s 2023 Design-Build Conference & Expo evening awards program Nov. 2, in National Harbor, Md. 
