Crews Make Emergency Fixes to I-10 Washout in California

On Aug. 24, monsoonal thunderstorms unleashed flooding that damaged east bound lanes that were serving as a detour past an ongoing construction site.
The second lane was restored on Interstate 10 near Desert Center, the California Department of Transportation announced on social media.
Eastbound traffic was completely blocked until Caltrans was able to open one lane the next morning, but warned of heavy delays. photos courtesy of Caltrans.)

Central 70 Project Achieves Major Construction Milestone

The Colorado Department of Transportation’s Central 70 Project has suc cessfully completed the last major milestone on Interstate 70, which marks the end of major construction impacts on the roadway. There is now a new and permanent alignment on west bound I-70 between Brighton and Colorado boulevards.“Therewas never a doubt that the main goal of CDOT was to complete the Central 70 proj ect within budget and on schedule and we are on track to do that,” said CDOT Executive Director Shoshana Lew. “We are grateful for the public’s patience as we work to complete this critical project. Our number one priority is to deliver a high-quality product to the people of Colorado. Having I-70 in its final configura tion now allows motorists to safely travel along the corridor and let crews focus on completing the 4-acre cover park above the interstate.” Central 70, between I-25 and Chambers Road, is one of Colorado’s economic backbones. It is home to 1,200 busi nesses, providing the regional connection to Denver International Airport and carrying upwards of 200,000 vehi cles per day. Since the project’s groundbreaking on Aug. 3, 2018, I-70 has undergone a complete reconstruction. A total of 19 bridges have been constructed. Many of the bridges were removed and replaced and some were newly built, including the Union Pacific Railroad bridge, BNSF Railroad bridge and all of the streets that are now above I-70 in the lowered section.
Interstate 10, east of SR-177, was closed in both directions due to flooding and overturned big rig on Aug. 24.
Monsoonal thunderstorms unleashed flooding that damaged eastbound lanes that were serving as a detour past an ongoing construc tion site. The second lane of I-10 was restored near Desert Center four days after the flood.

DESERT CENTER, Calif. (AP) Highway workers have opened a second lane for travel on the main route from Los Angeles east to Phoenix after repairing damage caused by monsoonal flooding during the last week of August.

Construction crews have created a new and permanent alignment on west bound I-70 between Brighton and Colorado boulevards, marking the project one step closer to substantial completion.
The Central 70 Project has reconstructed 24 ramps, bring ing them up to today’s safety standards, including extending acceleration and deceleration lanes which will help to reduce crashes as motorists come on and off the interstate. This 10mi. stretch of I-70 now also has wider shoulders, or in some instances brand new shoulders, for motorists to safely pull off the interstate in case of an emergency. The most dramatic change to this stretch of I70, however, was the removal of the viaduct between Brighton and Colorado boulevards. For the first two and a half years of the project, crews worked diligently next to the viaduct to excavate and build out the future westbound half of the lowered interstate. In May 2021, crews switched into a temporary configuration in the new lowered section as a part of the Mile High Shift. This con figuration allowed crews to demolish the existing viaduct, which was completed within four months, and excavate and build the eastbound half of the interstate. More than 2.4 million cu. yds. of soil was excavated. “More than seven million hours have been ded icated to building this project,” said Lew. “It has been incredible to watch this project come to life after an over 15 year study period. CDOT is proud of the partnerships we have developed with the Central 70 Project Developer Kiewit Meridiam Partners, the city and county of Denver, Northeast Transportation Connections, WORKNOW and our many dedicated subcontractors to make this project successful. It has been a long time coming and we hope the public will enjoy the many safety improve ments that come with the reconstruction of the corridor as well as the trip time reliability when the Express Lane tolling comes online in early 2023.”

Dakota AG Innovations was invited by Genie to introduce Dakota AG’s Power of Foam at Genie’s mid-year sales meeting July 19 to 21, 2022, at Genie’s North Bend, Wash., location. The afternoon of July 19 was spent introducing and training Genie’s regional parts managers (RPMs) on the Power of Foam and Dakota Shine product lines. Participants were given a hands-on tutorial of the products, and the Genie team will be equipped with a kit to give onsite demonstrations when visiting customers interested in learning more about the Dakota Ag product capabilities Lynn Odland, president, and Jon Odland, vice president, business development, from S.D.-based Dakota AG Innovations were invited by the Genie Global Leadership and North America Sales Team. Those in attendance included Armando Betancourt, director — parts AWP for the Americas; Logan Wood, product manager of Genie parts and serv ice; and 25 others representing Genie leadership and regional parts managers/sales team members.

Genie also is offering to its cus tomers Dakota Shine, a product that has been rehabilitating faded paint worldwide for more than 20 years.“Our products are proven in the construction, auction and rental world,” said Odland. “It is our goal to get the Power of Foam with Dakota Wash HD into the hands of those that could really benefit from it. We feel that with Genie stocking our products in their distribution centers across North America, the Genie North America sales team will be able to provide our prod ucts to their customers and endusers with a higher level of service, while providing better accessibili ty, ease of ordering and faster turn around times.” CEG Dakota AG Innovations photo

The Power of Foam is a foam cleaning system that utilizes Dakota AG’s Dakota Wash HD foaming cleaner and degreaser. It is user friendly, biodegradable and will not interfere with wastewater recycling systems, according to the company.ThePower of Foam consists of a wall-mounted and air-operated foamer that sits above a refillable 55-gal. drum of Dakota Wash HD. The package includes a 70-ft. hose with a wand that will apply a layer of foam. Once applied, the foam penetrates, encapsulates and releases accumulated grease, grime and oil buildup. Let the foam sit and work for a couple minutes then rinse. Dakota Wash HD also will neu tralize corrosion in battery com partments. By applying the foam and letting it do the work, the chances of damaging electronics and circuitry will be reduced, the company said.

Lynn Odland, president, Dakota AG Innovations; Armando Betancourt, director – parts AWP for the Americas; Logan Wood, product manager of Genie parts and service; and the Genie parts sales team stopped for a group photo following the demonstration of the Dakota AG Innovations’ Power of Foam and Dakota Shine product lines introduced at the Genie Parts and Service Mid-Year Sales Event on July 19, 2022.
“The Dakota Ag products will reduce the time to clean machines and maintain overall appearance of the products. This will improve turn-around times to get machines back on rent and retain higher asset value, supporting Genie’s commit ment to helping equipment owners maximize the value they realize from their fleet.” Dakota Shine and Dakota Wash are now available through Genie distribution channels.

Sandvik Chooses Cat HVO Engines to Reduce CO2 Emissions
Collaboration With Cat Dealer Finning UK, Ireland Sandvik is a commercial and industrial equipment supplier, pro viding leading solutions for the mining, quarrying and construc tion industries. The company sup plies large volumes of mobile crushing and screening equipment that can contribute to CO2 emis sions when using traditional diesel fuel.To make the shift towards a more sustainable business, Sandvik Mobiles decided to invest in HVO as a renewable fuel and turned to Cat dealer Finning UK and Ireland to supply compatible engines. HVO is a form of renewable synthetic diesel, produced from certified waste fats and oils through hydro-processing. Its per formance is similar to regular diesel, but it reduces the carbon footprint associated with operating the engine and can lower nitrogen oxide (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) under certain conditions. Its chemical similarity to diesel means that the machine’s power output and uptime are not compro mised when introducing HVO as an alternative, and it also can be blended with diesel, the manufac turer said.
Sandvik has successfully com pleted testing on its range of machines to confirm that they can operate with HVO without modifi cations to either the engines or the fuel tanks. This helps Sandvik and its customers to reduce the net car bon dioxide (CO2) emissions by up to 90 percent compared with conventional diesel, according to the company.
Supporting Customer’s EnergyRequirementsTransition

Caterpillar’s long-standing com mitment to sustainability and sup port for customers during the ener gy transition to a lower-carbon future means its industrial engines have for many years been capable of running on a range of renewable and alternative fuels*.
Sustainability Solutions
“We are focused on developing our products and services to help our customers transition to a lowcarbon economy and fulfill our company’s purpose to help build and power a better and more sus tainable world,” said Steve Ferguson, vice president Caterpillar Industrial Power Systems. “Our Cat dealer Finning offered its expertise throughout the project, sharing its extensive knowledge on engines and fuels to provide Sandvik with all the information it needed,” said Ferguson. “Our Cat C-Series engines give customers the flexibility to use HVO as both a replacement and addition to their conventional diesel fuel, depend ing on their requirements.”

Higher Application Diversity for Cone, Impact Crushers

As an option, the conveyor can be swivelled hydraulically by up to 100 degrees, which also makes side discharge possible. A kidney-shaped stockpile can thus be created manually.Ifanapplication is only to produce one classified final grain size, the post screening unit can simply be used as a single-deck version.
The wind sifter can only be used in conjunction with the post screening unit. With the double-deck post screening unit, a second wind sifter can be used as an option for cleaning the medium grain. For more information, visit www.wirtgen-group.com.
As the MOBIREX MR 110(i) EVO2 is frequently used in recycling applications, wind sifters are used here as an option. They provide better material quality because lightweight material (e.g. wood and plastic) contamination is removed from the material, according to the manufacturer. The air flow can be controlled precisely depending on the material, reducing manual sorting work.

Double-Deck Post Screening Unit Guarantees High Application Diversity, Flexibility

Wind Sifters for Effective Cleaning
Kleeman’s mobile cone crusher MOBICONE MCO 90(i) EVO2 and the mobile impact crusher MOBIREX MR 110(i) EVO2 can now be fitted with a double-deck post screening unit as an option. Cone crushers are mainly used in hard stone, impact crushers in soft to mediumhard stone and in recycling. A very high product quality is expected from both plant types. Due to the new optional double-deck post screening unit, it is now also possible, with a single machine — without the use of an additional screening plant — to produce two classified final grain sizes.
The large screening surface makes effective screening possible especially for grain sizes below 7/8 in. The discharge height of the fine grain conveyor is designed for a maximum stockpile volume. Oversize grain can be processed in a closed material circuit via a return conveyor.

In this method, steel cables inside the concrete are tensioned with a significant force, elongating them. Before the strengthened con crete carries loads, the strands are released, compressing the concrete.
“All this information can feed structural life management tools and lead to more efficient mainte nance schedules.”
“I hope our ongoing work gen erating new knowledge and tech niques will positively impact safe ty across the board,” said Brendy Rincon Troconis, assistant profes sor and co-principal investigator.
The goal is to increase the dura bility of reinforced concrete in a sustainable way while minimizing risks to humans and the broader environment.“Corrosion is a significant risk to safety in many fields,” Troconis said. “Therefore, I hope our ongo ing work generating new knowl edge and techniques will positively impact safety across the board.”
No Whitewashing the Importance
Though the resulting carbonates improve the strength and durability of the concrete, they also allow chloride to corrode the reinforcing steel inside.
At the Corrosion Research Laboratory at the University of Texas at San Antonio, work aimed at making building products safer is proving Foundedsuccessful.in2016,the Corrosion Lab is home to student researchers, collaborators and visiting scien tists, all using the space “to inte grate experimental approaches with accelerated degradation through harsh environments” including salt, temperature and humidity.
The reinforced concrete and steel used not only in today’s roads and bridges but in other transporta tion venues including airport run ways, railways, sewers and tun nels, are threatened by weather and environment.Researchhas found that in the right environment steel can retain its strength for 100 years. But exposed to salt and wind, it begins to rust and Coatingsweaken.thathelp slow down the effects of water and oxygen can only do so Carbonationmuch.causes concrete failure when carbon in the air mixes with compounds used in cement.
The team also is expanding their testing to include accelerated cor rosion chambers and field testing related to reinforced concrete applications.Theresearch team also is collab orating with Universidad de Costa Rica and Texas A&M University to test an environmentally sustain able corrosion inhibitor.
that aircrafts are also exposed to mechanical stress, it’s important to best understand how they affect corrosion.
This can be done through the evaluation of corrosion and attack on structural alloys in relevant con ditions, said Troconis.
The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is tack ling carbon corrosion in bridges with a revolutionary method: Carbon fiber reinforced bridge beams.
In 2001, LTU, MDOT and the city of Southfield, Mich., deployed the first three-span carbon fiber prestressed concrete bridge in the coun try.The Bridge Street bridge was out fitted with sensors so it can be mon itored by MDOT until 2025. Since then, more than a dozen bridges have been built throughout the state using carbon fiber components.
“That role might be in making certain that the material selection and the physical design of these infrastructure projects is done in such a way that the asset is protected for as long as possible,” he said. “Now, it all needs to be done in a sustainable manner. That has AMPP written all over it, from the front-end design, selection of materials, and the specification for the long-term corrosion protection systems.” Ask simple questions, said Adley: “How is our state receiving these funds? What’s its vision on how they should be dispersed? And are we incorporating sound corrosion design, management and oversight provisions in the utiliza tion of these funds to ensure that our investment is sustainable?” Adam Christopher, AMPP man ager of government relations, believes the key for coatings pro fessionals and other contractors is to be a part of the process. He said the goal is “to make sure policymakers understand the need for actively planning and engaging and making sure that things are protected.”Christopher said that’s one of the reasons our nation’s infrastruc ture is in such a state of disrepair today.“It’s that we haven’t had that tra ditional focus of making sure the best policies are in place to make sure that assets are properly main tained.” CEG
Prestressing also reduces or eliminates cracking from concrete shrinkage; it allows thinner and longer spans, according to MDOT.
“We have previously demon strated the efficiency of Twin Hawk’s product and are now bringing the chemical production onto campus to optimize the sur face preparation and coating process parameters,” she said.
He said the technology is becoming wildly popular well beyond Michigan’s borders.
An expert in corrosion in rein forced concrete, Troconis is work ing with Texas-based Twin Hawk on a commercial grade coating that minimizes corrosion and improves the durability of the reinforced concrete over time.
Prestressing concrete with highstrength materials is one method of strengthening it.
President Biden’s infrastructure bill may stave off materials deterio ration as it improves the nation’s roads and bridges — and benefit corrosion professionals in the process.Coatings experts weighed in on what the infrastructure legislation means for the corrosion sector as a whole and members of the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) specifi cally.Dan Adley, retired CEO of engi neering consultant KTA-Tator, Pittsburgh, Pa., said every aspect of the infrastructure bill involves con struction materials, where the corro sion and coatings sector has a role.
“A report from aircraft teardowns showed that nearly 80 percent of cracks on military aircrafts have been found in close proximity to corrosionConsideringsites.”
“Rusting of steel elements is the leading cause of deterioration in our bridges,” said Matt Chynoweth, chief bridge engineer of MDOT. “Since carbon fiber is non-corrosive, we are eliminating that potential for damage. Using a material that will not corrode is a real game-changer.”
Since 2001, MDOT has collab orated with Lawrence Technological University (LTU) on research into carbon fiber reinforced polymer materials in concrete bridge beams. MDOT reports that research has reached the field stage and projects utilizing it have been deployed.
Researchers Look for Ways to Mitigate Material Corrosion
The research coming out of the long partnership between the state transportation agency and LTU hopes to optimize the design process and encourage more widespread use. The team has subjected beams to 300 freeze-thaw cycles, com bined fire/loading events, severe weather and other trials.
Page 26 • September 11, 2022 • www.constructionequipmentguide.com • CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT GUIDE

The material is prone to corrosion and deterioration from extreme temperatures, water and deicing chemicals.Preventing corrosion and repair ing damaged areas requires time and money and can limit the lifes pan of the structure, said MDOT. But carbon fiber, an innovative alternative to steel, has strands as strong as those of steel, but resist ant to corrosion. They also require less maintenance over time, so they offer longer service life.
By Lucy Perry CEGClimateCORRESPONDENTchangeis
They’re also utilizing computa tional modeling to characterize materials to better understand cor rosion and help mitigate its effects.
Steel has been the go-to material for prestressing concrete for high way bridges, but it has drawbacks.
In the right environment steel can retain its strength for 100 years. Exposure to salt and wind can weaken and deteriorate the construction material.
Chynoweth said MDOT is deploying the materials strategically, using them on higher-volume routes. On a span of southbound I75, the carbon fiber-infused beams are some of the longest in the state, at 140 Twoft.bridges are currently being built with carbon fiber reinforced beams as part of MDOT’s massive I-94 modernization project in Detroit. They will use beams with newer 0.7-in. diameter carbon fiber strands, allowing greater initial ten sioning than steel, said MDOT.
Bridging the Future
Today’s bridges are built to withstand both the daily loads of thousands of vehicles and decades of extreme temperature changes.
The goal is to engineer a 100year bridge, said Paul Ajegba, state transportation director. “The aim is bridges that last a century with minimal maintenance.”
being blamed for accelerated infrastructure cor rosion. Increases in temperature and humidity are weakening con struction materials and eating away at America’s roads and bridges. The transportation design and con struction industry hopes with President Biden’s major infrastruc ture bill their structural preserva tion efforts will gain traction.
Not Taking It Lying Down
Subsequent loads on the beam have to overcome this built-in com pression to actually stress the beam.

Curriculum also includes a Slag Cement 101 slide deck and recorded webinar that will help introduce students to the benefits of this materials use in con crete construction.
According to Lori Tiefenthaler, president of the SCA board of directors, this offering will serve to enhance con crete materials instruction with new and exciting slag cement information, projects and tools for use in university courses.
*While the slag cement university platform is a great way to expand your knowledge on slag cement use, this is not a certification program. As with all concrete mixtures, trial batches should be performed to verify concrete properties. Results may vary due to a variety of circumstances, including temperature and mixture components, among other things. You should consult your slag cement professional for assis tance. The motor is protected by a rugged chas sis designed to help withstand crutching loads up to 10 metric tons. Severe-duty bear ings — rated to 77,000 lbs. and protected by a labyrinth design and triple steel ring seals — offer additional strength, while an abra sion-resistant AR 400 liner minimizes wear fromOversized, debris. serrated skid shoes hang off the sides of the attachment head to control, position and manipulate downed material for more effective material processing.
This new boom head offers the same per formance and benefits as the excavator drum mulcher, including a larger-than-industrystandard hydraulic motor, optimized infeed system, and removeable bolt-on door for controlling and containing debris.

Diamond Mowers Introduces Pair of New Mulching Heads
Featuring an unobtrusive design that opti mizes visibility, Diamond Mowers’ new boom drum mulcher is a must-have addition for any municipal fleet faced with cutting, processing, and eliminating woody materials from areas that are unreachable with a skidsteer or excavator, the manufacturer said.
Pages 31-37 For more information about these attachments and more, visit our Attachments Section on our Web site at www.constructionequipmentguide.com SECTIONAttachments
Additionally, customers have access to Diamond’s customer service resources, including an experienced team of customer care experts, a dedicated parts team readily available to address any needs that may arise, and a 72-hour parts shipping guarantee on most common components. “We have so much confidence in our drum offerings that we wanted to share that confidence to our customers as well,” said Stachel. “This extended warranty not only applies to our newest attachments but to our entire drum portfolio, including those cur rently in the field furthering our commitment to being the best partner in this industry.”

Excavator Drum Mulcher DC Pro X Delivers More Productivity Per Pass

More to Come
“These additions bring new and improved performance features to the forefront of veg etation management,” said Dan Stachel, executive vice president of Diamond Mowers. “Engineered for heavy-duty mulching applications, these game-changing products promise to optimize productivity, diversify work opportunities and create new revenue streams.”
The new excavator drum mulcher increases the versatility of any midi-excava tor while delivering more productivity per pass, according to the manufacturer.
“Historically, a rotary head has been the go-to for maintaining fence lines, bridges and overpasses, but the open design of those attachments typically leaves branches strewn on the ground, creating a two-step process requiring two different tool heads,” Stachel said.

“Our new boom drum mulcher can reach, cut, process and eliminate material with one attachment, one pass and one operator.”
In conjunction with the introduction of these new attachments, Diamond Mowers has extended its warranty to two years across all of its drum products — doubling down on its confidence in the power and perform ance of its offerings and further reinforcing the company’s commitment to being a lead ing provider in the mulching category.
Diamond Mowers will continue to roll out new drum mulching attachments throughout the year. In addition to the new excavator and boom drum heads, as well as the recent ly introduced drum mulcher OD Pro X, cus tomers can anticipate enhancements to the company’s depth control drum, along with a low-flow skid drum. For more information, call 605/977-3300, email info@diamondmowers.com or visit DiamondMowers.com. This new boom head offers the same performance and ben efits as the excavator drum mulcher, including a largerthan-industry-standard hydraulic motor, optimized infeed system and removeable bolt-on door for controlling and con taining debris. The forward drum exposure allows for optimum tree engagement and feeds materials from left to right as it sweeps the ground for greater productivity per pass. Material is thoroughly processed in the cham ber, producing an aesthetically desirable chip size without the need for reprocessing. Offered in two widths (30 and 50 in.) to accommodate excavator carriers from 4.5 to 10 met ric tons, the excavator drum mulcher comes equipped with a Rexroth 63cc adjustable dis placement hydraulic motor.
Diamond Mowers, a manufacturer of industrial mowing, mulching, and brush cut ting equipment for the municipal, skid-steer, and excavator markets, has introduced a pair of new mulching heads specifically for use with midi excavators and tractors, respec tively. The excavator drum mulcher DC Pro X and boom drum mulcher are the next inno vations to be rolled out in Diamond Mowers’ expanding portfolio of mulching attachments, further reinforcing the brand’s commitment to innovation and to being a full-service solutions supplier for vegetation management professionals.

The PTO’s factory supplied DIN 5462 ports and SAE 1410 flanges are interchangable with the SAE 1310 flange and SAEC and SAE-BB ports, which are all offered through Volvo’s parts distribution network. The factory-installed dual PTO, which carry the same warranty as the I-Shift transmission, also includes dash switches to provide independent left and right side control.

Volvo Trucks Expands Capabilities of I-Shift With Upgrades
The I-Shift transmission with the dual PTO improves functionality, productivity, fleet utilization and versatility. It also complements the existing single, double and triple PTO suite of offerings.

Volvo Trucks North America has upgraded IShift, an automated manual transmission with dig ital intelligence. I-Shift now offers a dual power take-off (PTO) that expands the efficiency bene fits, transmission functionality and overall cost sav ings. The new dual PTO allows I-Shift to incorporate two independently clutched DIN 5462 drives, or one SAE 1410 flange and one DIN 5462 drive, separated by the vehicle’s cen terline. By separating the two drives, space is created to allow for the installation of two pumps, simplifying installations and serv iceability in the field. The output drives are independently clutched, enabling the vehicle to serve applications either separately or “Leveragingsimultaneously.the new capabilities of a dual PTO in Volvo’s IShift transmission increases the truck’s operational versatility — a customer can haul portland cement one day and aggregate material the next,” said Andy Hanson, product marketing manager at Volvo Trucks North America. “Volvo’s factory installed PTOs and pumps make the up-fitting process easier, increasing first-time quality and overall reliability for our customers.”
To view our current comparison trailer specification charts visit www.constructionequipmentguide.com

An expanded benefit of the I-Shift transmission is that it comes in 12, 13 and 14-speed configurations. I-Shift also is available with an overdrive gear and crawler gears of either 17.5:1 or 32:1, providing the ability to cruise at highway speeds while still allowing for excellent efficiency, “startability” and slow-speed maneuverability.

Volvo installed PTOs also can receive factory installed Parker gear and piston pumps.
“For more than 15 years, Volvo Trucks’ I-Shift intelligent automated man ual transmission has set industry benchmarks for fuel efficiency, vehicle performance, safety and driver comfort. “The biggest challenge was in how to move the nearly 300,000 cubic yards of excavated material in place alongside a func tional highway,” said Danny Warren, Teichert Construction’s project manager.
“Due to the number and size of the rocks, both before and after blasting, it wasn’t fea sible to use highway trucks to move the material. We were able to create a plan of attack that allowed us to use non-highway articulated rock trucks to move the majority of the material while maintaining two-way reversing traffic control. We worked on one side of the road at a time, keeping two lanes of either existing, or temporarily constructed highway open for traffic at the end of every shift. We had to work both sides of the high way to construct the widening, sometimes with traffic in the middle. However we were able to mostly work one side at a time.
“We are able to put traffic on the new asphalt the same day it is placed,” said Warren.Forthe roadwork, Teichert utilized Cat 352 and 390 excavators; Cat D5, D6, D8 and D10 dozers; Cat 623 scrapers; and Volvo A45G or equivalent articulated haul trucks.
The $65.5 million Highway 20 Browns Valley Project, awarded to Teichert Construction, covers the area between Marysville Road and Parks Bar Bridge. The work has crews resurfacing, restoring and rehabilitating a 4.5-mi. section of road way; widening shoulders to standard 8-ft. widths; and constructing a new Dry Creek
“It was placed on temporary steel piles,” said Warren, Various sized cranes, brought in by the subcontractors working on the bridge, were used, with excavators helping with the demotion operation. The Teichert management team also included Project Engineers Anthony Pietrobono and Sara Weimer, as well as intern Parker Jenks. “We had a great team and we worked extremely well with the Caltrans project team,” said Warren. “Our crews are amazing and performed tremendously on this project. They achieved all production goals set for them, while suffering zero lost time inci dents.”Thedemolition and excavation operations generated 8,000 tons of asphalt and 600,000 tons of earth and rock.

Project Challenges Like any major construction projects, this one had its challenges.
“The project team worked very well together and we would categorize the work ing relationship with Caltrans as world class,” added Warren. “Through numerous partnering workshops, we developed a lot of trust with each other and were able to solve issues at the lowest level possible, only ele vating when necessary.”

TeichertBridgeutilized Cat 352 and 390 excavators; Cat D5, D6, D8 and D10 dozers; Cat 623 scrapers; and Volvo A45G or equivalent articulated haul trucks.
The highway was built via an asphalt sur face, with a subbase and base. “Portions of the existing highway had to be rehabilitated by cold planning portions of the existing roadway surface and overlaying with new asphalt,” said Warren. “A few existing drainage systems were also rehabil itated in place with concrete lining or a cured in place pipe liner.” The new roadway section is approximate ly 9-in. thick.
The new bridge, a cast-in-place box girder structure on cast-in-drilled hole pile founda tions, is approximately 400-ft. long and has three“Welanes.started with the center bent founda tions, then the eastern abutment followed by the western abutment,” said Warren. “The superstructure was worked on all at once. The foundation work was very challenging due to the existing soil conditions and bedrock plus groundwater.” The bridge took about one year to con struct, which included a falsework system.
“All traffic was left on the existing bridge while the new one was constructed,” said Warren, “then traffic was moved over so the old bridge could be demolished.”
The widening of the shoulders to standard 8-ft. widths was completed at the same time as the roadway rehab and repaving. The straightening of the curve between Stacy Ann Drive and Sicard Flat Road and flatten ing of the slope of the roadway between Valhalla Way and Digger Pine Lane fol lowed a similar plan of attack and used sim ilarTheequipment, oldDry Creek Bridge had two lanes and was 400 ft. in length.

“There was a significant amount of hard rock that required drilling and blasting prior to excavation,” added Warren. “It was a tight work zone, however we were able to work with the State to rearrange the staging and sequencing of the widening to allow for a lit tle more room and less traffic pattern swaps.”Theproject has been a day and night oper ation.“Safely handling public traffic through the roadwork was one of our primary concerns and as such, we spent a lot of time reviewing the stage handling plans and revising them with the state to keep the public’s conven ience as a priority,” said Warren. “We were able to make some changes to the sequenc ing of work to minimize the number of lane closures and traffic pattern switches, which we believe made the public’s conveyance through the job both safer and less restrictive while also allowing us to be more produc tive. We believe progress was more than sat isfactory as we will end up completing the project in less overall working days than the contract allowed for.
“All of the earth and rock was used for new embankment fills on the project,” said Warren. “The asphalt was taken to Teichert Materials’ Hallwood plant where it is being recycled into new asphalt. Recycling is very important to us. We are always looking for ways to reuse materials on-site wherever possible.”Theamounts of new materials, including concrete, asphalt, steel and pipe are being tabulated.“Mostwear and tear is to tires and other wearing surfaces such as cutting edges and teeth,” said Warren. “Teichert has its own mobile equipment division with in-house mechanics that can generally get things moving for us the same day. We have mobile mechanics that can be called out to jobs for service as necessary. Good maintenance starts with good housekeeping and inspec tions. Our crews visually check the equip ment each shift before operating and report any wear and tear to our mobile equipment division ASAP, so we can catch things before they become catastrophic.

paving and striping work was recently com pleted in August while the remainder of the project checklist is expected to be completed in TheSeptember.$65.5 million Highway 20 Browns Valley Project, awarded to Teichert Construction, covers the area between Marysville Road and Parks Bar Bridge. The work has crews resurfacing, restoring and rehabilitating a 4.5-mi. section of roadway; widening shoulders to standard 8-ft. widths; constructing a new Dry Creek Bridge that meets current design standards and has a multi-use pathway; straightening the curve between Stacy Ann Drive and Sicard Flat Road; and flattening the slope of the road way between Valhalla Way and Digger Pine Lane.
“Our mobile division works directly with the dealers and rental companies to ensure that all parties are treated fairly and equitably so that we can get the best service possible,” said Warren. CEG (All photos courtesy of Teichert Construction.)
