Caltrans District 7 in Los Angeles is working on a $247 million project to replace a historic, but aging Commodore Schuyler Heim bridge that was not designed for today’s taller ships to pass beneath. Work began in 2011 and completion is expected in late 2020. Crews have demolished much of the original bridge, a lift-span structure built in 1948. The new bridge, now under construction, is in the same location as the old — on State Route 47 between Ocean Boulevard and a quarter mile south of State Route 102. As discussions developed about improving or replacing the bridge, it was determined that the original bridge was eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. Built by the U.S. Navy, the eye-catching north-south lift-span bridge provided a link between Terminal Island and the mainland where Wilmington and Long Beach meet. Several times a day, traffic was halted to allow the bridge’s metal-plate roadbed to rise elevatorstyle to allow ships including tugboats, sailboats and large vessels to pass beneath. The well-recognized, green-painted crossing featured two cross-braced steel towers suspended by cables. Planners determined that it would be more cost effective to replace the bridge than attempt to retrofit it for earthquake safety.

So, the lift-span portion of the existing Commodore Schuyler Heim bridge is being replaced by a fixed-span bridge structure. It means the new bridge that spans the length of the channel will be permanently attached to support beams. The new bridge is tall enough to allow for tall ships to pass beneath without use

Arizona Builders Alliance...

ABA Members Answer Call to Help Soldiers With Donations The Arizona Builders Alliance participated in a cell phone drive to donate minutes to soldiers overseas. A total of 1,015 cell phones were collected by more than 100 ABA member companies between February and May of this year. The phones were donated to Cell Phones for Soldiers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing cost-free communication services to active-duty military members and veterans. They collect cell phones and sell them to recycling firms, and use those dollars to buy calling cards for soldiers overseas. For every two phones collected, onehour of calling time is donated. Due to the volume of phones collected by ABA members: • 507.5 hours of calling time for soldiers overseas were donated • 30,450 minutes of calling time for soldiers overseas were donated Kerwin Kortman, director of Business Development of Kortman Electric, was

instrumental in the success of the cell phone drive, acting as the liaison between the ABA and Cell Phones for Soldiers, promoting, sorting and packing the phones for delivery to Cell Phones for Soldiers, personally. Kortman said, “Thank you to all who have donated to the 2015 cell phone drive. Each year is a reminder to me that the people in the construction industry have the biggest and most generous hearts that I have ever seen. Your donation makes a difference.” The ABA collects cell phones for the drive all year-long, with a special emphasis on collection between February and May. The cell phone drive was discovered and is managed by the ABA’s Community Service Board, chaired by Josh Marriott of McCarthy Building Companies. ADOTP&F Tackles Challenges to Replace Capt. Moore Bridge By Cindy Riley

Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) expects to complete a $19 million project to replace the Captain William Henry Moore Bridge on the Klondike Highway near Skagway, Alaska, this fall. Construction began in April 2017, came to a halt in October and resumed in May 2018 due to seasonal weather restrictions. “This improvement is needed to support international trade, including the transportation of ore concentrates from Canada to the port facility in Skagway,” said ADOT&PF spokesperson Aurah Landau. “The Klondike Highway is an industrial use highway used by mining trucks to access the Yukon Territory and the Alaska Industrial Development and Export Authority ore terminal. In order to safely support the ore trucks from Canada, the trucks are restricted to cross only one vehicle at a time, along the center line of the bridge, traveling at five miles per hour.” The 110-ft. bridge’s foundations are weakening, following years of heavy-load traffic. Crews are replacing the bridge on the Klondike Highway between Skagway and the United States/Canadian border. The project includes paving, widening roadway approaches and work on a drainage structure. ADOT&PF teamed with Hamilton Construction LLC to complete the project. Once opened, the structure will carry traffic over William Moore Creek and replace the aging bridge. Rock excavation will allow the state to straighten the roadway and build a new wayside parking lot south of the bridge. The new bridge will safely pass the fully loaded ore trucks at normal speeds. The driving surface also includes shoulders for use by bicyclists and pedestrians, an important tourism use of the highway. “This was a challenging site to design for, and geology has partially driven it,” said Landau. “The crossing spans the 200-foot wide, 180-foot deep Captain William

Henry Moore Creek Gorge. The rock on the north side of the canyon is raveling. New bridge alternatives developed for this project were based on the assumption that at least the first 30 feet of rock for the abutments must be spanned.” The new crossing will be a roller compacted concrete (RCC) embankment with a 75-ft. opening at the base for the creek. ADOT&PF selected the design approach based on a number of criteria, including challenging geotechnical conditions of the rock on the north side of the crossing, as well as the life cycle cost structure. “While RCC is commonly used in the Lower-48 for constructing dams, it has rarely been used in Alaska. This is a unique and creative use as a bridge structure in Alaska. The design was done by some of the leading RCC engineers in the United States,” said Landau. According to James Colles, Hamilton Construction engineer, the project is extremely challenging due to the location. “The new bridge is constructed with RCC in lifts from the top of the structural steel plate pipe to the finished grade. RCC requires the use of heavy equipment to place, grade and compact. The canyon, at its narrowest point during RCC placement, is approximately 120 feet across and the RCC embankment will be 40 feet wide,” he said.

The excavators are used extensively in the excavation of blasted material and placement of material in the wayside embankment, as well as for clearing, grubbing and assembly and placement of the structural steel plate pipe.

The crew has approximately 4,800 sq. ft. to fit a dozer, roller and laborers. There also are walk behind compactors, consolidation equipment and hoses being fed grout from a grout paddle mixer. A crane uses buckets to deliver RCC from the mixing plant and down into the canyon where the crews spread and compact the delivered RCC. Workers then placed the structural steel plate pipe (75 ft. span, 25 ft. high, 40 ft. wide) into the canyon. Before winter shutdown, rock excavation, wayside embankment construction, the vast majority of rock bolting and aggregate production were completed. Prior to construction, the project

site was mountainous with sheer cliffs next to the roadway. Blasting was performed to create access roads to a lot of the site boundaries, and access roads were continually constructed to perform all of the blasting necessary to remove 120,000 cu. yds. of material. Excavators have been used extensively for removal of blasted material and placement of material in the wayside embankment, as well as for clearing, grubbing and assembly and placement of the structural steel plate pipe. Loaders and dozers create material stockpiles, grade material into the waste areas and maintain the material stockpiles. A dozer and loader were utilized when constructing the RCC embankment to

place and grade material. Articulating rock trucks transport blasted shot rock material; stockpile material to be processed into usable RCC material; haul waste material; and deliver loads of batched RCC onto the embankment, which is required to be compacted to 98 percent of optimum compaction density. A Manitowoc 2250 crane has been used for rock scaling; rock bolting; foundation bolting; form work; concrete placement; placing the pipe into the canyon; and the initial placement of RCC, due to the lack of access for other concrete conveying equipment. It also assists in the setup of the vertical formwork for the outer limits of the RCC embankment structure. The main materials used on the project consist of 10-in. minus shot rock, mass RCC and top course RCC. The 10-in. minus shot rock is used as the subbase material throughout the entire project, the mass RCC is 1.5-in. minus material used for the bulk of the RCC embankment fill and the top course RCC is .75-in. minus material used for the final structural surface under the roadway. The State of Alaska is keeping the old cable stayed bridge in place and building a wayside parking lot next to the old bridge. Access roads were built throughout the blasting process to allow the ECM 590 drills to reach all the blasting locations, so they could begin drilling. Drill hole locations were laid out by a surveyor. All shot plans were submitted to the state with drill logs, timing plans and estimated loading information prior to the shot being authorized. Landau added that although there will be no future access across the old bridge, it won’t be torn down once the new structure is in place. “The existing bridge has unique historical significance, so DOT&PF has chosen to turn it into a wayside attraction. The Hobbs News-Sun reported Lea County commissioners voted the week of Aug. 20, to seek a construction contractor to start expansion at the Lea County Regional Airport. Officials say the current 4,800-sq.-ft. facility contains a security section with no restrooms and an insufficient seating area for passengers. Commissioners were told that the Federal Aviation Administration and the New Mexico Department of Transportation likely will cover the estimated $4.1 million, 7,800-sq.-ft. expansion. Other amenities to be provided or upgraded include an improved baggage claim area, the ticketing area, spaces for food vending and room for three rental car agencies. Hoover Dam Cuts Number of Tours Due to Renovation LAS VEGAS (AP) — Officials say there will be fewer Hoover Dam tours starting next month as work begins on renovations to the visitor center and guest elevators at the iconic structure. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which operates the dam, announced Aug. 28 that the construction will begin Oct. 1 and will continue for about four months. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported the primary visitor center exhibit and other attractions will remain open during the work, but only a limited power plant tour will be offered during that period. Leonard C. Schilling, area manager of the Lower Colorado Dams Office, said in a written statement that the tickets for the tour will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. MB Crusher MB-R800 Evolves the City ‘Worth a Fortune’

Even today in Bolivia, the phrase “worth a Potosì” means “it is worth a fortune.” Just by passing through the streets of Potosì and listening to the former miners retell the history of the city, you become aware of the beauty and magic of what was once one of the richest cities in the world. And not only one of the richest. Today, Potosì is one of the highest cities in the world. At 13,149 ft. above sea level, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. It is also famous for its silver mines, many of which are still active. Right up there, in a terrain that is not completely served by roads, MB Crusher’s MB-R800 drum cutter is involved in a large project, known to locals as the “Expansión Gasoducto Sucre-Potosì,” or Sucre-Potosì Gas Pipeline Expansion. This is the construction of an 187,000-ft. gas pipeline between

Mariaca and Karachipampa. The project will meet Potosì’s everincreasing demand for natural gas and will allow the expansion of commercial and industrial activities in the area. The Cutter That Is Not Daunted by Anything Working conditions in Potosi have proven to be difficult. The soil, in fact, is formed from a conglomerate of rock and granite that is very difficult to mill. Even geographically, the area is challenging: it is an area composed of upland and Andean mountains, with temperatures that fall to less than 8 degrees below zero. In a rarefied zone with extreme conditions and hard rock, the work was arduous, but not for the MBR800 drum cutter, which was designed and built to complete even the most difficult of jobs, performing like only a “100-percent-

Made-in-Italy” product can. For this project, the MB-R800 drum cutter is attached to a Komatsu PC200 excavator. The MB cutter is also equipped with an integrated security system that intervenes if the excavator’s parameters are not properly regulated. In cases where materials with different levels of hardness are being operated upon, MB cutters are able to adapt and use proportional force depending on the tenacity and hardness of the material. This reduces stress on the excavator arm and increases stability during processing. The two drums can be dismantled directly on site, and the direct drive twin motor system allows a differentiated distribution of force with regard to the two milling heads. The MB-R800 cutter was not working out there alone. The project also included a BF80.3 crusher bucket, which also bears the MB

Transportation Commission Awards $16M in Highway Contracts in August Crews will rehabilitate three interchanges near the Interstate 90 and 25 junction to improve pavement conditions. The Wyoming Transportation Commission awarded S & S Builders, of Gillette, a $3.9 million contract for slab and bridge work on a 3-mi. section of road near Buffalo in Johnson County. The commission awarded that and nine other contracts totaling $16 million at its meeting recently. For the I-25 and I-90 work, crews will repair cracked pavement and make bridge repairs to improve road conditions. The contract completion date is Oct. 31, 2019. Other contracts the commission awarded included paving, sign installation and rockfall mitigation. Northern Improvement Co., of Fargo, N.D., won a $2.1 million pavement project. Workers will remove the old pavement, put an overlay on top and then add chip seal to 7.5 mi. of U.S. 85 between Newcastle and Four Corners in Weston County. The contract completion date is Oct. 31, 2019. The commission awarded Kilgore Co., of Rock Springs, a $1.8 million contract for a pavement project and bridge work on 2 mi. of U.S. 189 near Kemmerer in Lincoln County. The contract completion date is Oct. 31, 2019. Mountain Construction Co., of Lovell, was the low bidder on a $1.5 million pavement project on 5 mi. of WYO 30 between Basin and Burlington in Big Horn County. Crews will remove the old pavement, add an overlay and then chip seal the pavement to prevent moisture from getting inside. The contract completion date is Oct. 31, 2019.

The new bridge will have three standard 12-foot lanes with 10foot shoulders in each direction and one southbound auxiliary lane.” The Heim bridge is one of three bridges accessing Terminal Island and carrying high truck traffic to and from the Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach. The new fixed-bridge configuration is expected to improve traffic flow for trucks and passenger vehicles. The new bridge will conform to higher seismic standards, enhancing safety. Also, replacing a deteriorating structure with a new one will reduce maintenance costs and lead to improved roadway connections in the future. The bridge is being constructed in stages: • Stage 1 involved construction of the northbound portion over Cerritos Channel. • Stage 2 required shutting down the northbound half of the existing bridge and shifting traffic to the existing southbound section, which is being built on the same alignment as the original structure. • In Stage 3, traffic was shifted to the newly completed northbound bridge. The remainder of the existing bridge was then demolished. Crews began demolition of the Heim bridge superstructure in August 2015 and finished that part of the project in April 2016. The above-water portion of the original bridge has been demolished and the approach ramps for the new southbound bridge have largely been completed. However, about 45 percent of the original bridge foundation still needs to be demolished and the new southbound span across the harbor channel must still be constructed. MCM Construction Inc. grown from a small hard-working general contractor to one of the construction industry’s major bridge-builders. Caltrans District 7 provided design oversight and currently provides construction administration for the work. The project features about 20 subcontractors. Some of the top names include Payco Specialties (painting and striping) of Chula Vista, Calif.; Select Electric of Vista, Calif.; Ace Fence Co. of La Puente, Calif.; L. Riley Trucking & Dispatch of Harbor City, Calif.; and JAFEC U.S.A. of San Jose, Calif. About 70 workers are at the job site during peak periods. Southbound Portion As part of stage 3 crews will construct the southbound portion of the new bridge. Stage 4, 5 and 6 will be finishing work. The new bridge will provide a permanent navigable channel that is 180 ft. wide with a vertical clearance of 47 ft. The height is adequate for passage of ships underneath. With the elimination of the lift, traffic will no longer be delayed because of passing ships. Replacing the lift span bridge with a fixed-span bridge is expected to improve safety and benefit the local, state and national economy and international trade. Heavy Equipment on Site Equipment for the bridge project includes heavy-lift cranes; drilling machines; earth movers; loaders; and road pavers. Crews have used more than 10 heavy lift cranes ranging from models with 140-ton lifting capacity to

top lifters with 330-ton lifting capacity. Workers will lay about 95,000 cu. yds. of concrete and 3,000 tons of asphalt over the course of the project. Estimated Construction Cost Has Risen In 2011 the amount was set at $181.3 million. Planners envisioned the overall project including contingency and state-furnished materials to come to about $210 million. But construction alone topped $200 million. The project construction cost has increased primarily because of the complexity of constructing large and deep foundations in the marine environment. As a major undertaking including underwater work, the project also required added time for study and expert analysis. Main Materials Have Changed The old Heim bridge was built mostly of steel. The new bridge will be mostly concrete spanning 4,120 ft. in length. It is a fixed-height structure made from pre-stressed concrete box girders. When completed, the bridge will conform to seismic and roadway standards. It is expected to reduce future maintenance costs. Materials from the original bridge are being recycled including steel, concrete piers and roadway decks. But the hot Texas economy is only one factor in the rapid growth of the company, whose sales now exceed $1.3 billion annually. Always looking for opportunities to grow its John Deere footprint, Doggett has acquired three separate Deere dealerships with 17 locations since 2005. Doggett performs above the national market share average in all markets served. “In some cases, that represents a tripling of where Deere was before we came into the market,” Ortiz said. Dramatic increases in inventory, unmatched commitment to service and innovative sales approaches have all contributed to the growth, he said. The company’s goal is to “perform at 30 percent market share or better ultimately,” according to Ortiz. The 2010 purchase of Rush Enterprises’ John Deere Dealerships in East Texas is Doggett’s most recent acquisition in the construction division, and it put the company in the Houston market. Three years ago, the company opened its new Houston branch, which also houses the corporate headquarters for all of Doggett’s holdings and boasts 36 service bays. The new facility was a $24 million capital investment. Across all branches, Doggett now has more than 150 service bays along with 150 service technicians in the field, and a total of 300 service technicians. Approximately 1,300 people are employed by Doggett across all industries.

Ortiz said the company knew early on that it would need more capacity for both sales and service operations in order to meet its growth objectives. “We wanted to build a premier service facility. We truly wanted the building to be a statement as to our commitment to the Houston market,” he said of the structure that stands along the North Freeway, just outside of downtown. Prior to the Rush acquisition, the company bought four J.C. Brown Deere locations in 2005 and followed up in 2007 by purchasing the Nortrax locations in Louisiana and northeast Texas. “Same store growth has easily doubled in all locations since Doggett’s involvement in the markets,” said Ortiz, a 12-year veteran of Doggett Machinery who has worked with the John Deere brand for more than two decades. The company’s territory for Deere is now contiguous, stretching from I-45 east through Texas and the entire state of Louisiana. “Although our markets are contiguous, they are very diverse,” Ortiz said. Energy Dept.: Wind Power Projects Continue in U.S. OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) â€” The U.S. Department of Energy reported that the continued construction of windpower generating stations is bringing down both the cost of building the installations and the price for wind-generated electricity. The recently released report shows Texas leads the nation with 22 gigawatts of wind capacity, followed by Oklahoma, Iowa, California and Kansas with each at more than 5,000 megawatts. A gigawatt is 1 billion watts of power; a megawatt is 1 million watts. The report says wind energy provided 6.3 percent of the nationâ€™s electricity supply in 2017. The average price for wind power has fallen from 7 cents per kilowatt hour in 2009 to about 2 cents per kilowatt hour in 2017. The U.S. Energy Information Administration said the average home in the U.S. uses 897 kilowatt hours per month. Morbark Introduces Two New Models at Expo Richmond Morbark LLC, a manufacturer of forestry, biomass, tree care, sawmill and wood recycling equipment, debuted two new machines at this year’s Expo Richmond show: the 6400XT wood hog horizontal grinder and the 50/48X whole tree drum chipper. “Morbark listened closely to our customers when we developed both the 6400XT wood hog and the 50/48X drum chipper,” said Michael Stanton, Morbark director of industrial sales. “We took our previous proven design technology and added the features our customers want and the versatility they need when we created these high-production units.”

Vermeer Announces Its BC1500 Brush Chipper Now Available With Gas Engine Vermeer now offers its BC1500 brush chipper with a gas engine. The new model is equipped with a powerful 165 hp (123 kW) PSI gas engine and delivers comparable chipping productivity as its diesel counterpart, according to the manufacturer. Using a precisionbalanced drum with two A8 doublesided knives, the new Vermeer BC1500 gas brush chipper is capable of chipping logs up to 15 in. (38.1 cm) in diameter. “Faced with emission regulations, many arborists are converting their

day dominate the South Texas market, which is served by Doggett’s Victoria and McAllen branches. The lignite mines in East Texas have bolstered sales in the Longview, Tyler and Lufkin branches. Southern Louisiana also is energy driven, with equipment needed for offshore drilling support operations. Northern Louisiana is more diverse. At the end of the day, though, oil and gas are still what keeps the company on a growth pattern that is projected for the next several years. Doggett has been a major equipment provider for the Rover, Ruby and Valley Crossing pipelines, and over the next six months expects to put machines to work on three more huge lines. Both the Cactus and Gray Oak Pipelines will carry oil from the Permian Basin to the Gulf Coast, while the Gulf Coast Express will be a 42 in. line carrying natural gas from the basin to the coast. The projects total more than $1 billion in costs. “The Permian Basin is huge for us,” Ortiz said, explaining that while the dealership does not have locations in West Texas, the oil and gas has to get to the refineries and shipping facilities on the coast, and therefore are constructed largely in Doggett territory. In addition to energy, general site prep, underground utilities, and roadbuilding are all important markets for Doggett and its product lines. The company sells Dynapac compaction and paving equipment to complement the Deere line of earthmoving machines. While Doggett does not sell John Deere agricultural equipment, the huge cotton farms of Texas provide a big market for Deere’s wheel loaders.

Crews will soon begin work to improve mobility and save lives along I-25, one of the most heavily traveled corridors in Colorado. On Aug. 30, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper led a groundbreaking ceremony for the I-25 South Gap project, officially kicking off construction on the 18-mi. project between Monument and Castle Rock. Joining Gov. Hickenlooper and CDOT were representatives from Colorado State Patrol (CSP), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Douglas County, El Paso County, the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority and several elected officials who played major roles in getting the project from the study phase to construction. “Getting this project to construction would not have been possible without the leadership of many of our elected officials along the corridor at the federal, state and local levels,” Gov. Hickenlooper said. “It’s an example of great collaboration that will go a long way in saving lives, reducing congestion and providing reliable travel options.” The I-25 South Gap is a four-lane section of I-25 connecting Colorado’s two largest cities, Denver and Colorado Springs. Over the years, congestion, crashes and delays have grown, along with Colorado’s population. Safety along this vital transportation corridor has been a key concern. “Our trooper family knows too well the hazards of this corridor,” said CSP Chief Col. Matthew Packard. “The I-25 South Gap is a tough place to work. We’re thankful to all the partners that came together to accelerate this project for everyone’s safety.” The I-25 South Gap project will: • Add one lane in each direction between Monument and Castle Rock. The new lane will operate as an Express Lane so motorists will always have the choice of taking the two general-purpose lanes for free or taking the Express Lane for a reliable trip in exchange for a toll; • Widen shoulders to allow room for enforcement zones, maintenance and detours around incidents; • Rehabilitate structures and pavement, including the replacement of four bridges; • Build four wildlife underpasses and expand the existing one at Plum Creek; and • Improve lighting, signage, fencing and other features. “This is the fastest delivery, from planning to construction, of a project this size that CDOT has ever accomplished,” said CDOT

Executive Director Michael Lewis. “We couldn’t do it without our funding partners. We also need drivers’ help. We appreciate your patience as our crews complete this critical work.” Construction Impacts Throughout the project, drivers can expect: • two lanes in each direction to be open during daytime, peak travel hours; • nightime, off-peak-travel-hour lane and ramp closures; • narrower lanes and shoulders to accommodate the workzone; • speed limit reductions to 65 mph on I-25 and 45 mph on the frontage roads during construction; • construction trucks entering and exiting the median; • single-lane closures from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. on I-25; • intermittent frontage road closures for various construction activities; and • flaggers directing traffic during frontage road closures to maintain local access. Road work will begin in early September on the northern portion of the project near Castle Rock. Overnight lane closures will be ongoing along I-25 between Plum Creek Parkway and Sky View Lane as crews begin restriping I-25 and installing concrete barrier to make room for work in the median, where the new Express Lane and inside shoulder will be constructed. Putting all four lanes of traffic in this new, temporary alignment will occur over several weeks, but drivers could see new traffic patterns along this stretch as soon as Friday, Sept. 7. Traffic will be pushed to the far outside shoulders. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained during daytime hours throughout the duration of construction. Most of the initial traffic impacts will be focused in the northern section. Still, motorists will see some construction activity corridor-wide where crews are relocating the fiber optic lines east of I-25. Work in additional areas along the corridor will begin in phases. By summer 2019, the entire 18-mi. stretch will be experiencing active construction. Substantial construction completion is planned for late 2021, with tolling to begin in 2022. The new eight service bay location at 4224 Ruby Vista Drive is 2.0 miles from the previous site and sits on 6 acres on the North side of I-80, a major east-west transportation corridor. Startup Kodiak Robotics Tries Hand at Self-Driving Trucks Ex-Uber employee Don Burnette partnered with Paz Eshel, an ex-venture capitalist, to create California-based Kodiak Robotics in April 2018 to tap into the autonomous long-haul trucking market. With $40 million in funding, the company plans to build an employee base of engineers before testing a series of self-driving trucks equipped with laser Lidar sensors, radar, cameras and computers, Forbes reported. â€œLong-haul self-driving trucks are the first place that weâ€™re going to see this technology out into the world and weâ€™re really excited about bringing that to bear,â€? said Burnette. Burnette is no stranger to self-driving truck initiatives; he and two Google employees cofounded trucking startup Otto, which Uber acquired in 2016, Wired reported. Research-Driven Approach While details of Kodiakâ€™s business plan are scarce, Burnette did say that the company has put effort into learning more about the

trucking industry, talking with truckers and shippers to gain a full understanding of the business, Wired reported. Part of Kodiakâ€™s approach includes talking with sensor-making companies to find the best option for its vehicles. â€œWe take a holistic approach; we want to use all the different sensors that are available,â€? said Burnette. â€œWeâ€™re not trying to build this super cheap or make it super expensive. HDOT Reports Effects of Storm on Hawaii’s Roads The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) responded to flooding events on Kauai late Monday, Aug. 27, 2018. HDOT engaged in flood response on Kauai and Oahu on Aug. 28, 2018. Kauai The preliminary 24-hour rainfall total for Hanalei as of 6 p.m. was 11 in. This resulted in the continuing closure of Kuhio Highway at Hanalei Bridge and on the road between Waikoko and Wainiha. HDOT Highways Division Kauai District plans to clean mud and debris from the roadways once flood waters recede and to continue repair work on Kuhio Highway at mile marker 1, which saw rockfall and a fallen tree the evening of Aug. 27. HDOT will announce when access to Hanalei, Wainiha, and Haena is restored. Travel on Kuhio Highway at mile marker 1 (the hill leading up to Hanalei Bridge) will be contraflowed as additional emergency repairs are made to the slope. The hours for the alternating one-lane access will be given after assessment of the area and weather conditions. Oahu HDOT Highways Division Oahu District responded to flood related closures of Likelike Highway between Valley View Drive and Nalanieha Street in both directions and cleared Honolulu-bound lanes as of 9:25 a.m., Aug. 28, 2018. HDOT crews also cleared a small landslide on the eastbound H-201 Moanalua Freeway before the Puuloa Off Ramp and removed flood debris from underneath the Kalihi Stream Bridge on Dilligham Street (area before Middle

Street). Removal of the flood debris beneath the bridge engaged HDOT crews and contractor HTM, until 6 p.m. on Aug. 28. Maintenance crews involved in the debris removal were unable to complete repairs to the flashing beacon at the entrance to the Kalanianaole Highway Contraflow HOV Lane, which runs westbound from West Halemaumau Street to Ainakoa Avenue. The Contraflow was opened Aug. 29 between 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. for those with two or more in their vehicle, motorcycles, electric vehicles with proper licenses, and permit holders. Contraflow users were asked to use caution when entering the contraflow and to avoid entering before the 5 a.m. opening time for their safety and the safety of the crew setting up the lane.

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — A 300-ft. mining tunnel in central Wyoming that was abandoned soon after its construction in 1868 is being opened to the public. The Casper Star-Tribune reported that the horizontal tunnel carved into rock on a hillside at South Pass City State Historic Site opened for tours Sept 1. Superintendent Joe Ellis said the tunnel was constructed largely by hand, with workers using picks, shovels and gun powder to excavate about 3 ft. of tunnel a day.
