bidadoo Ups Its Sales Through Rapidly Expanding Team bidadoo is expanding its sales and leadership team to meet the surge of online remarketing demand and activity.

As further fueled by COVID-19, bidadoo has attracted a 188 percent growth in site traffic during this period. bidadoo is expanding deeper into new regions and markets.

Organizers Postpone 2020’s GIE+EXPO Tradeshow to 2021

RDO Family Grieves Loss of Leaders RDO Equipment Company’s Steve Connelly, vice president of Midwest agriculture, and Mark Kreps, vice president of sales — Agriculture were killed in a two-vehicle crash on Aug. 19, 5 mi. west of Groton, S.D. Mr. Connelly was responsible for providing leadership to all agriculture stores in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Mr. Connelly started his career with RDO Equipment Co. 17 years ago as a general manager in the Red River Valley.

Before joining RDO Equipment Co., he was an instructor at Moorhead High School, as well as the head football coach.

He received his undergraduate degree from Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., and a master’s degree from South Dakota State University. He was active in his commu-

nity and served on many boards, including the Minnesota Agriculture in the Classroom (MAITC) Foundation Board of Directors and The Village Family Service Center’s Board of Directors.

Mr. Kreps was responsible for overall sales strategy and execution across the Agriculture division. In addition, he had responsibility for International agriculture sales and wholesale marketing.

Mr. Kreps had nearly 30 years of sales and management experience. He started his career with RDO Equipment Co. 25 years ago in a sales capacity for the Red River Valley stores. In 1997, he became a store manager, and in 2001, began leading the Core Accounts team and serving customers across the agriculture region. 

Steve knew the name of every member of his team, gladly shared credit with all of them and touched so many lives in our organization and our community as a mentor, friend and coach.

I worked with Mark my entire career at RDO. For 25 years, Mark built lasting and meaningful relationships with customers and team members all over the world. He was always enthusiastic, terrifically creative, and dedicated to the success of his customers.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and continued regulatory uncertainty, GIE/OPEI LLC announced that the 2020 show will be postponed until next year.

Show ownership and management of GIE+EXPO, the Green Industry and Equipment Exposition, have been monitoring the situation closely, and have been working with state and local authorities to put on the safest show possible.

Unfortunately, the unpredictable nature of such a rapidly evolving environment prohibited this year's show from taking place safely.

“The health and safety of our attendees and exhibitors is critical, and it is with profound regret that we announce the cancellation of our 2020 event,” said Kris Kiser, president and CEO of OPEI, and managing partner of GIE+EXPO. “We’re looking forward to 2021 and already gearing up to make our next show a dynamic and engaging experience for the entire industry. I encourage exhibitors and attendees that have already registered or secured exhibit space to roll those monies forward to the 2021 show.”

Next fall, attendees and exhibitors will experience several updates to the Kentucky Exposition Center grounds. The facility is undertaking $8 million in outdoor improvements and enhancements, including: • Replacing the main entry gates to improve ingress and egress; • Expanding paved areas on the north side of the building to increase exhibit space opportunities; • Relocating more than 126,000 cu. yds. of dirt, the equivalent of 63 football fields (or over 1 million wheelbarrows full), to the Outdoor Demonstration Area to improve drainage and irrigation to the grounds; • Adding permanent driving lanes to the Demo Area; and • Improving pedestrian access from nearby hotels by adding sidewalks that extend from Phillips Lane to the new main gate.

GIE+EXPO has called Louisville home since the tradeshow began nearly 40 years ago.

“We want to thank our host city for its ongoing support of our show,” Kiser said.

Despite the need to postpone this year’s show, the industry continues to thrive.

“Manufacturers, landscapers, and outdoor power equipment dealers have been deemed essential during this ongoing pandemic, and the industry continues to play a major role in keeping greenspaces around the country safe and accessible,” said Kiser.

“What we’ve learned during this period is the extraordinary importance of the living landscape to our mental and physical health, especially for homeowners who have a yard.

We saw the ongoing need for the TurfMutt education program by parents and educators, with the robust distribution of our curriculum by Scholastic, the U.S. Green Building Council's Global Learning Lab, and the Wildlife Habitat Council, among others,” Kiser continued. “The new voice of our Foundation, Mutt Mulligan, has been busy promoting the importance of living landscapes.”

Planning is already under way for GIE+EXPO 2021, scheduled to take place Oct. 20 to 22 in Louisville.

More Than $2 Billion in Renewable Energy Projects Launch ENERGY from page 1

Total construction starts increased 6 percent in June, according to the Dodge Index, marking the second consecutive monthly gain in starts following the COVID-19-induced declines in March and April. In fact, utility/gas plants moved 108 percent higher in the month as more than $2 billion in renewable power projects were launched.

New York State announced 21 large-scale renewable energy projects. Four utility-scale wind projects and 17 major solar projects have been selected. Two of the solar projects will include energy storage to integrate solar energy into the electric grid.

With these projects, New York’s will advance its goal to obtain 70 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by the year 2030. The projects translate into more than 2,000 short- and long-term jobs and increases in local tax payments.

Once the projects are completed, New York’s carbon emissions should equate to 300,000 fewer cars on the road.

On the West Coast, the $600 million Golden Hills Wind Project in Sherman County, Ore., got off the ground, as did the $438 million Athos I solar facility in Desert Center, Calif.

With jobs to fill, the renewables sector is attracting workers from other markets. Unpredictable ups and downs — and the fast crash this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic — have driven many career employees from the fossil fuel and oil and gas markets toward jobs in wind and solar.

Jobs creation and an energized local economy are two of the points that sell renewable energy projects. In rural Colorado, more than 6,300 jobs have resulted from renewable energy ventures since the year 2000, generating almost $400 million a year in economic activity for the eastern part of the state.

A study from Denver, Colo.-based environmental group The Western Way shows that 40 projects, including seven in development or under construction, are set for completion by 2024. By year’s end, nearly 5,000 megawatts of power will have been generated, and another 1,100 megawatts will be added as projects are completed during the next four years.

Let the Sun Shine The study noted that the economic impact of renewable energy project construction in the region totals nearly $6 billion. Plus, it’s generated close to 13,000 jobs from both construction workers and the dollars they spend.

New York State will be the site of a large-scale solar project in Chautauqua County, that will include a 20 megawatt battery energy component. Renewal Energy Developer ConnectGen predicts the South Ripley Solar Project will create about 600 jobs during peak construction and 220 fulltime equivalent jobs.

The project will contribute a meaningful amount of renewable energy toward the state’s identified clean energy supply goal of 70 percent of electricity generated by 2030. It should supply enough electricity to power approximately 60,000 average homes in New York annually.

Under a plan to install 30 million solar panels in Florida by the year 2030, five solar projects recently launched in the northeastern part of the state. Approximately 200 jobs are anticipated with the newest project, in St. Johns County, according to Florida Power & Light.

Baker, Clay, Nassau and Union counties are home to other solar farms under construction, expected to add 500 permanent jobs to the area. Some 1,200 workers will be needed to fill jobs at the peak of construction.

The park will generate 117 million kWh annually once it’s completely online, in 2023. Community Energy announced in May a similar agreement with Big Rivers Electric Corporation for 100 megawatts of solar parks in the state.

Minnesota Power is investing $40 million into three solar projects with a goal of tripling its solar portfolio through the addition of 20 megawatts of renewable energy.

Daily Energy Insider reports that if the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission gives the project the nod, the three facilities will be located in the northern part of the state.

Drawing from existing electrical infrastructure, they’ll begin construction next year.

“Planned solar projects will boost the tax base of local economies, add solar panels from regional manufacturers when possible, and support local construction jobs,” said Bethany Owen, president and CEO of Duluth, Minn., energy company ALLETE. Blowing in the Wind The Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that utility-scale solar generating units are predicted to grow by 17 percent in 2020. Wind generation is close behind, and should see a 14 percent growth spurt this year. Both on- and

offshore wind farms are more visible than ever now.

In the Montana Rail Link Yard in Laurel, Mont., the towers for PacificCorp’s Pryor Mountain Wind project sit, waiting for delivery to the job site. Arriving by train, the towers will wind up in Bridger, Mont., on a large wind farm installation project there. Spencer Hall of PacifiCorp reported that four structures were being put up earlier this month.

“I think there’s going to be 10 in the next week or two,” Hall said in an interview with the Billings Gazzette. “Folks in the area can expect see a lot of trucks going by.”

At its peak, the project will see 300 workers on the 114turbine farm site. Some 240 megawatts of capacity is the goal for what will be the largest wind farm in Montana, providing renewable energy for out-of-state customers.

Specialized flatcars were designed to transport the lengthy turbine blades and other components.

“A single wind turbine blade runs over the length of two rail cars,” said Ross Lane of the Montana Rail Link.

Construction equipment is carried to the railyard by truck, and a crane will load the parts onto trucks for transport to Bridger.

Mortenson Construction of Minneapolis is the project’s general contractor. The company will oversee public road improvements and creation of access roads to each turbine site, as well as foundations, underground collection, substation, operations and maintenance building and towers. see ENERGY page 54

Komatsu Customers Surpass 3.3B Tons Moved Autonomously

Marking another industry first for autonomous haulage, mining companies have now hauled more than 3.3 billion tons of materials leveraging Komatsu’s FrontRunner autonomous haulage system (AHS).

Working closely with its customers, Komatsu teams developed the first commercially available autonomous haulage system to help mines move material more efficiently. First deployed in 2008 at CODELCO’s Gabriela Mistral (Gaby) copper mine in Chile, AHS brings together some of the world’s best-selling, ultra-class dump trucks with Modular Mining Systems' DISPATCH Fleet Management System, according to the manufacturer.

Today’s FrontRunner system operates around the clock, hauling copper, iron ore, oil sands and coal at 11 customer sites across three continents. At the end of June 2020, there were 251 trucks in operation, with an additional 100 (mainly from installing AHS retrofit kits) planned to deploy within FY2020.

“Our mining customers’ ongoing investment in technology and equipment to transition to autonomous haulage underscores the value the system pro-

vides,” said Toshio Kurokawa, general manager of marketing department, Mining Business Division, Komatsu.

“We are gratified to have helped our customers save hundreds of millions of dollars while autonomously moving another billion metric tons of essential minerals and driving for zero harm. The FrontRunner system is designed to enable manually operated equipment (such as loaders, dozers, graders, light vehicles, etc.) to seamlessly interact in an autonomous truck environment.

Komatsu recently introduced system functionality to enable manual haul trucks to also operate with the autonomous trucks.

To further support the growth of autonomy in mining for its customers, Komatsu is leading initiatives within ISO to develop standards for interoperability between Komatsu and non-Komatsu autonomous vehicles.

John Deere Introduces Its New E-Series Cold Planers Expanding on its established lineup of attachments, John Deere unveiled its new CP18E, CP24E and CP30E cold planers.

These new attachments offerings help operators who work on street repairs, leveling uneven pavement, texturing pavement and cleaning around larger milling machines. The CP18E, CP24E and CP30E are compatible with John Deere skid steers and compact track loaders, as well as equipment offered by competitors, according to the manufacturer.

“The E-Series cold planers are new solutions for our customers seeking more efficiency on the job by enabling all cold planer functions to be controlled from within the machine’s cab,” said Jessica Hill, program manager, global attachments at John Deere.

“The attachments deliver value to our customers through increased productivity and uptime, while maintaining low daily operating costs.”

The CP18E, CP24E and CP30E cold planer attachments are equipped with a heavy-duty planetary drive system that delivers high torque speed for the toughest and most demanding jobs. The planetary drive system is a wheel drive, which allows the operator to remove the side plate when the attachment works next to a curb, making it ideal for use in tight spaces.

Through complete in-cab controls, operators can easily maneuver the cold planer depth, tilt and side shift to increase overall productivity. With rear spoil clearance that reaches up to 9 in. (22.9 cm), operators can be more

Operators can expect an increase in uptime with the visible case pressure reservoir that was added to the three models to provide a visual indicator of high case pressure, according to the manufacturer.

If there is high case pressure, the reservoir will fill with oil and will give an indication to shut down the system so operators can spend less time waiting for maintenance and more time working. Additionally, the case pressure reservoir helps reduce contamination to the machine’s hydraulic system to maintain machine health and longevity overall.

The high-capacity gearbox on the CP18E, CP24E and CP30E cold planers includes a drain-and-refill plug for clean and easy maintenance fills, using only a funnel to keep daily operating costs low.

Additionally, oil will need to be replaced after 1,000 hours or on an annual basis. Operators should reference the operator’s manual for appropriate procedure and maintenance requirements.

Oklahoma Bridge Conditions Move Up in Rankings: Now Among Top 10 Oklahoma highway bridge conditions are making the grade by moving from among the worst in the nation to the head of the class, achieving Top 10 status for the first time by ranking ninth, according to the latest data from the Federal Highway Administration.

The state was as low as 49th place in 2004 in national bridge condition rankings due to the number of structurally deficient bridges on the state highway system.

“Top Ten isn’t just a slogan — it is the vision that helps form and guide our road map to improving state government and changing the future of all 4 million Oklahomans for the better,” Gov. Kevin Stitt said. “Transportation is the backbone of the economy, and this designation shows Oklahoma is a new national leader in highway bridge infrastructure thanks to the dedication of ODOT employees and an unprecedented investment in our bridges by the Legislature.”

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation embarked in 2005 on a massive effort to improve highway bridges after decades of under funding to transportation infrastructure took a toll, causing a backlog of critically needed projects. A targeted approach to

fixing bridges began taking shape through a series of legislative funding mechanisms and identifying key funding opportunities by the congressional delegation.

“This overhaul on our highway bridges took more than 15 years and has only been possible thanks to the consistent vision and support of our governors, legislators and congressional delegates,” Oklahoma Secretary of Transportation Tim Gatz said. “We also have to thank Oklahomans for making transportation a priority. With significant citizen support this issue rose to the top of state needs. This unprecedented program was only possible with a united focus on Oklahoma’s future.”

Bridges in Oklahoma: Key Facts • Value of highway system in Oklahoma is $60 billion, making it Oklahoma’s No. 1 physical asset.

• In 2004, nearly 1,200 of Oklahoma’s 6,800 highway bridges were considered structurally deficient, meaning they showed signs of needing major rehabilitation or replacement.

• This momentum took an even more aggressive approach in

2011, when the “Bridge Improvement and Turnpike Modernization Plan” was announced. One of its goals was to specifically reduce the structurally deficient highway bridges to 1 percent and have a manageable bridge system by the end of the decade.

• Today, 86 highway bridges are now considered as structurally deficient, based on bridge inspection data submitted to the FHWA by states for its 2019 report. Each of those remaining bridges is already scheduled for improvements through ODOT’s Eight-Year Construction Plan.

• Off-system bridges on city streets or county roads are separately maintained by local governments, which account for an additional 16,000 structures statewide that have their own critical needs and funding challenges.

• National studies often combine the highway and off-system bridges into one lump overview, but it’s important to note this new ranking is for the highway system.

The department will diligently look for ways to continue to address older bridges through consistent planning and preservation efforts to ensure that Oklahoma maintains its Top 10 bridge condition status, Gatz said. 

Workforce Development: Creating a Sense of Urgency in an Urgent World It’s hard to create a sense of urgency when we are immersed in an environment of change.

The past five months have been unrelenting, forcing us to continually adjust to ever-evolving circumstances around us.

The workforce landscape also has been dynamic, transitioning from a period of record-low unemployment to one of record-setting highs in mere weeks.

How does this impact the skills gap forecasted for manufacturing in the years ahead? Why should workforce development continue to be a relevant part of corporate strategic planning? What response is still needed?

These questions are the very ones addressed by AEM’s Workforce Solutions Summit, which was held on Aug. 10 to 12.

To plan for the future, we need to understand the road ahead. Although no one can truly claim to “see the future,” what we do know is U.S. manufacturing is predicted to have a shortage of 2.4 million workers in the next decade, with the number of new jobs growing by 1.96 million workers by 2028.

Mix in the more than 2.6 million baby boomers that are expected to retire from manufacturing jobs over the next decade, and the challenge quickly adds up.

But what about record unemployment? Unfortunately, even the fallout from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic won’t fill our skills gap.

Taking the First (or Next) Step Despite the growing skills gap and the economic impact that it can have on net earnings, many companies don’t see, or aren’t able to place, workforce development as a strategic priority.

AEM’s Q1 workforce survey indicated that many of our small to mid-sized members don’t have dedicated individuals or budgets when it comes to workforce development.

Sadly, the skills gap has no discrimination between company sizes. The time of resting on the idea that industry workforce challenges will be solved by the largest among us, or by some national marketing campaign, is done.

Like many industry challenges, each of us will be responsible for doing what we can do in our own backyard to address this gap. Fortunately, this work will directly benefit the companies who are willing to make a local effort.

Often, the biggest obstacle that prevents us from addressing a challenge is how to get started or what step to take next.

Our member-led workforce committee offered excellent insights into mainstreaming workforce development across the industry. These insights included asking AEM to clear the clutter and create immediate value through workforce development for our members, while making sure that getting started wouldn’t be overwhelming.

The committee advocated that members develop an “in it for the long game” mentality and change the focus on talent from being an HR issue to a business issue. Based on the committee recommendations, AEM has developed a strong plan that — along with member engagement — we believe can narrow the skills gap.

AEM’s Workforce Solutions Summit is the first of many solutions-focused opportunities that the association will begin offering its members as we embark on the challenging journey ahead. Our vision will be to build a community of AEM members who work together to influence industry perception and create a coordinated talent system, resulting in a continuous supply of qualified workers supporting long-term industry success.

We’ll do this by offering a tiered workforce initiative that focuses on small to mid-sized member support through a digital toolkit and individual member consulting services. To begin, we’ll focus on ensuring all members have access to the foundational elements that make up best practices for workforce development. After the basics are in place, we’ll begin to layer the digital toolkit with the successful initiatives of members in our industry in order to celebrate and share successful ideas.

Members can choose to craft their own workforce building activities, or they can choose to get support through remote or on-site consulting. Together, we will begin to close the skills gap that plagues our industry today.

Construction Plan The project has been divided into six phases: 1A, 1B, 1C, 2A. 2B and 2C. “We are in the first phase, which should be completed in about two weeks,” said Damian Sanchez-Carrasquillo, Bridges and Roads project manager. ‘Phase 1A covers two entrance and one exit ramp on I-35 of exit, two VIA parks and widening on the frontage roads and main lines. We’ll be starting on phases 1B and 1C soon.”

Phase 1A operations have included earth work, a fair amount of soil lime treatment and the demolition and reconstruction of existing lanes and entrance and exit ramps, as well as the construction of an MSE retaining wall; longitudinal drainage works using

crews will be using a couple of excavators for the removal of the asphalt and concrete and Bobcat Trucking will be moving the materials with their own vehicles. For the remaining sections, crews be using motor graders for the foundation work.”

Frontage road operational improvements have crews engaged in grading, surfaces, base and surfacing.

“We’re widening about three miles of frontage roads, adding one lane northbound and one lane southbound,” said SanchezCarrasquillo. “The work is advancing and we are working together with TXDOT and HNTB to keep the schedule moving to achieve this goal.The plan of attack for the next phases is to increase our resources, labor and equipment, as well as the combi-

nation of phases in order to accelerate our schedule. The installation of temporary barriers involves a great challenge with safety — there are too many moving parts — trucks, excavators, clamps, and everything can kill. We have taken this installation very seriously through significant planning and coordination to avoid mistakes. The installation needs to be smooth in order to be safe.

We have found that is faster and easier for our field crews to install these barriers with a John Deere 470 excavator.”

Project Progress Approximately 50 percent of the project has been completed. Phase 1B covers exit and entrance ramps and Phase 1C is a turnaround lane on Schwab Road. Both phases should be completed by early November.

“This is a high traffic area with motorists coming from Austin and San Antonio,” said Sanchez-Carrasquillo, “and when we finish the job, it will be good outcome for the traveling public. The greatest challenge is the traffic and exposure on I-35 and we have solved this through coordination with TxDOT and the city by setting closures at different times to minimize the impacts on traffic. Sometimes that impacts our schedule, but we always find ways to compensate for that.”

Barriers placed at work sites protect the

workers from oncoming vehicles. There have not been any serious soil, water or utility issues.

“Every so often we find something that should not be there,” said SanchezCarrasquillo, “but it’s nothing major and it can be solved very easily by readjusting the work item and through coordination with the field inspector. We have occasional night work to move barriers and do concrete pours due to the temperatures. Working through TxDOT’s area office has been great. They are always willing to help us and work together. They are very considerate when it comes to coordination and to advancing the work schedule.”

Partnering for Success B&R typically has three crews of its own personnel on site, which consists of 15 to 20 employees.

“Our subcontractor, Austin Material, has been great ,” said Sanchez-Carrasquillo. “It is always good to see them come and pave.

There’s a lot work to get to the point of paving, and it is refreshing to see how our hard work will improve the traveling public commute time while transiting I-35.”

“We’re working with a flexible base that requires proper coordination with your quality control and with your quality assurance personnel to make sure that you have your material at the right water content to achieve your density,” said Sanchez-Carrasquillo.

“It’s a bit of a challenge, but as long as you have cooperation with your QC guys, it’s doable. At the beginning we had a lot of excavation work, mainly the removal of old sections of road and grading of slopes along the road.”

John Deere 210G excavators and John Deere 277G motor graders have been helpful for these operations.

“After removing the old road with the excavators,” said Sanchez-Carrasquillo, “the motors graders come in and we’re using them for everything. For phases 1B and 1C,

Just more than 12 years ago, Ring Power saw an opportunity to further serve its existing customers and a rapidly-growing prospect base in the utility and telecommunications industries, for both power transmission and distribution work. The company seized the opportunity and created a new division named Ring Power Utility Equipment.

The new facility was speculation-built by Carroll Estes. The company is looking at renting this facility in Texas to establish the business before considering whether to build a completely Ring Power owned purposebuilt facility. The overall footprint of the new facility is approximately 10,000 sq. ft., which includes just over 2,000 sq. ft. for office space and the remaining space dedicated to shop space and parts warehousing.

The building includes more than two acres of secured fenced area for truck and equipment storage.

The scope of equipment types available at this location includes: bucket trucks; digger derricks; boom trucks; vacuum trucks and trailers; utility cargo trailers/pole trailers; rear easement equipment; tooling; and all come with complete parts and service capabilities.

Intense factory training of all staffing has been conducted by such manufacturers as Terex Utilities and National Crane. The new team at Temple, Texas, already has more than 60 years combined experience of service experience.

Specialty utilities trucks are rolling into the Texas branch on a regular basis.

Right from the start, this branch already has close to a half a million-dollar inventory of parts and has a 24-hour parts guarantee on more than 95 percent of standard orders.

The Ring Power Utility Equipment division is headed by a duo of vice presidents: Mike Beauregard, division general manager; and Andrew Kurz, division sales manager.

“The reason we chose this location [in Texas] is because the facility and yard space here will allow us to ensure our customers ample volume of local equipment resources within a three- to four-hour drive of all major cities,” Beauregard said. “The facility is brand new and built almost as if it were tailored to a Ring Power Service facility. The bays and office space are well appointed and provide a clean and controlled environment for quality service repairs.”

When asked the question, “why Texas?”

Beauregard said, “Texas was decided on from a need to expand west, as a result of a demand of our customers. We needed to be better positioned geographically to serve our customers with more cost-effective delivery options, Ring Power controlled service and parts and quality-trained and appointed technicians.”  CEG

Support, Practice Safe Digging: Why It’s Important

While many have adapted to working remotely, one thing that may have not crossed our minds is the importance of utility infrastructure.

None of the video calls that we’ve all grown to love so much would be possible without high-speed connectivity to our homes. Much of that data is traveling across fiber-optic lines located underground. So, when a strike occurs and a

Unfortunately, telecommunications continues to be the leading reporting damaged facility, according to the DIRT Report put out each year by the Common Ground Alliance (CGA).

While many damages occur due to improper locating and/or not following best practices while digging around an underground facility, one of the major root causes of damage is related to a failure to notify the local One Call Center. This can be done by calling 811 or going to the state 811 center’s website a few business days before digging to request that the approximate location of buried utilities be marked.

To help increase awareness for both professional excavators as well as homeowners who plan to dig, each year (CGA) designates Aug. 11 as 811 Day. It serves as a convenient reminder to “call before you dig.” Even though numerous awareness efforts have been made, and it’s the law to Call 811 before digging, the number of reported damages continues to increase year-over-year.

All the change that 2020 has forced upon us may actually contribute to more unsafe digging practices. As mentioned, many of us are staying home more than we typically do, which allows for many of those previously pushed aside projects to finally be tackled.

• An estimated 31 million homeowners are planning to complete home improvement projects that involve digging this year.

• Nearly 40 percent (36 percent) of homeowners planning to dig will put utility service at risk by not calling 811 before starting a project.

• This means that over 11 million homeowners will risk knocking out utility service to themselves and their communities by not calling 811.

The most popular planned DIY home projects that involve digging include: 1. Planting a tree or shrub (61 percent) 2. Building a patio or deck (30 percent) 3. Building a fence (28 percent) 4. Installing a mailbox (13 percent) AEM encourages everyone planning a digging project to take the following steps: • Always call 811 a few days in advance of a digging project, no matter the depth or familiarity with the property.

• Plan ahead and provide ample time for the approximate location of lines to be marked.

• Confirm all lines have been marked with the one call service and look for evidence of any utilities that may have been missed and ensure all underground utilities are located

prior to excavating.

• Strongly consider moving the location of the project if it’s near utility line markings.

• Know the tolerance zone in the state where the project is taking place along with any rules and best practices related to excavating in the tolerance zone.

If a contractor has been hired, confirm a call to 811 has been made, and don’t allow work to begin if lines haven’t been marked.

SAE Publishes Vacuum, Sewer Equipment Standards SAE has published a second standard for vacuum excavators and sewer cleaning equipment with the publication of J3107 to complement the already published J3106 Standard.

The members of AEM’s AEM’s Underground Equipment Manufacturers Committee (UEMC) understood the need for standards for the growing vacuum excavation equipment industry. Vacuum excavators have been in production for many years, but the full use of this equipment for assisting with the safe excavation around underground utilities has just started to be realized in the last few years. The industry responded with substantial growth.

AEM’s UEMC committee drafted the initial scope of the vacuum excavator standard and then approached SAE, a standards development organization, to expand the efforts to the entire industry. Those efforts included several manufacturers and industry experts to build the standard.

Since many of these industry manufactur-

ers involved manufactured a combination sewer cleaner and vacuum excavator machine, it was only practical to include both machines in developing a standard.

After many meetings, the joint efforts of industry experts and countless hours, the SAE MTC9 sub-committee, successfully led by Susan Harmon of Charles Machine Works (Ditch Witch), completed and navigated the two standards through the SAE channels and process.

The publication of SAE Standards J3106 and J3107 has complemented the significant efforts that the underground construction industry has delivered to their workforce to improve safety and send all workers involved home safely after a hard day on the job.

“This joint effort was an excellent example of how AEM facilitates the industry coming together to support the safety of our equipment and operators,” said Harmon.

ALLU Announces New Training Partnership With IUOE ALLU and the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) — a trade union that represents heavy equipment operators, mechanics, surveyors and stationary engineers in the United States and Canada — announced a new cooperation and partnership in pipeline training.

Through this partnership, IUOE has begun using an ALLU Transformer screening bucket for its pipeline application training program. The first training was held in Texas, beginning on June 17, 2020.

IUOE will be using the ALLU Transformer unit, donated by ALLU Group Inc., for all future pipeline training sessions.

The IUOE and the Pipe Line Contractors Association (PLCA), in joint cooperation, hold more than 170 training classes, working with more than 700 students each year, in programs that train operators from beginner through advanced levels. Sessions range from one to three weeks, and traditionally incorporate six days of 10 hours daily with classroom and field training in pipeline construction.

Because the ALLU Transformer is recognized as an effective tool for pipeline

padding and backfilling applications, IUOE/PLCA National Pipeline Training Director Bryan D. Abel and ALLU Group Inc. President Edgar J. Chavez began discussing its potential as a tool for the IUOE pipeline training program.

The ALLU Transformer allows material to be screened onsite and then backfilled directly into a trench, thus eliminating the need for dedicated stationary screening or the purchase of fine soil.

“We had spoken previously, but we developed the partnership more fully during ConExpo-Con/AGG 2020 in Las Vegas,” said Abel. “We sat down at the show, and Edgar told us, ‘We want to help.’ We have IUOE operators who use the ALLU buckets, and we agreed this would enhance our training. So, we ironed out the details.”

The ALLU Transformer was delivered to IUOE’s Texas training facility just prior to the June 17 session. Chavez and ALLU Group Inc. Vice President, Training and Application, Bernie Olender attended for initial setup and to observe and assist with the class, which hosted 19 students. Moving forward, the ALLU Transformer will be

used with IUOE’s intermediate pipeline training classes, in field training sessions where students will operate the unit in threeto four-hour rotations.

According to Chavez, “Safety is one of ALLU’s core values. The partnership with ALLU, IUOE and PLCA solidifies this value in the pipeline industry, as better training means safer overall operation.”

The pipeline training at the IUOE facility near Houston, Texas, covers all pipeline techniques from digging trenches, to laying pipeline, to padding/backfilling, to removing old pipeline. The mock pipeline job site accurately simulates real pipeline job sites and situations. With the ALLU unit, training will include padding and backfilling, as well as maintenance of the unit.

“Our Texas training facility is first-class,” said Abel. “We fly our members in and pick them up at the airport. We have a 225-room dormitory onsite, with a fully staffed kitchen and amenities. We serve three meals a day, we have a swimming pool and a recreation area — and our training is at no cost to IUOE members.”

Abel said the addition of the ALLU

Transformer to the pipeline training program is a great benefit to IUOE membership, as it is an excellent embodiment of the advances in technology within the pipeline industry.

“Right down to the ability to use Bluetooth to communicate between a smart phone and the bucket – ALLU is really on top of its game with technology.”

Additionally, Abel said participants were grateful to have Chavez and Olender onsite during training.

“One participant told us it was refreshing and encouraging to see executives with ALLU step up, want to help and personally see it through.”

Beginning this fall, a new ALLU AC Crusher bucket will be delivered to an IUOE sister affiliate — Local 181 in Kentucky — to assist with hill and winch training. Abel said the rocky and hilly terrain in Kentucky lends to challenges that are unique from conditions in eastern Texas. The ability to train with the ALLU AC will be an additional benefit for IUOE members.

A large maintenance shop allows Liebherr staff to service cranes of all sizes, concrete pump trucks and earth moving equipment such as bull dozers, excavators and loaders.

The $60-million investment underlines to the continuous success in Liebherr’s 50 years of business operations in the United States.

“A lot of the material that we have removed has gone to other contractors in the area that needed backfill for their projects,” said Sanchez-Carrasquillo.

New materials will include 106, 000 tons of asphalt, 31,000 tons of flexible base and 1,500 tons of concrete.

“We’ve had a lot of tire punctures due to metal and sharp pieces of rock and concrete,” said Sanchez, “and it can take of couple of hours to replace the damaged ones.

Some of our equipment on this job to support B&R operation is rented, and the dealerships regularly check on the equipment and do the routine maintenance.”

For this project, B&R is mainly renting equipment from dealerships such as RDO Equipment Company, United Rentals, Inc. and Central Texas Equipment.

Mega Energy Projects Could Be Boon to State Economies ENERGY from page 16

Once it’s online, Pryor Mountain Wind will increase energy by 30 percent and generate enough power for 76,000 homes.

Other Renewable Projects Clean energy storage is trending in the renewable energy construction sector.

Electrical energy can be stored when electricity is plentiful and inexpensive or when demand is low. The energy can then be returned to the grid when demand and prices go up.

Storage facilities are part of the current wave of renewable energy construction projects. The Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) tapped Catamount Solar of Randolph, Vt., and Northern Reliability of Waterbury, to construct the Pinnacle Ridge Solar and Storage Project at VELCO’s headquarters in Rutland.

Work includes a 500 kW solar array tied to a 1.2-megawatt energy storage system designed to reduce VELCO’s energy use at times of high-cost, peak system demand and increase electric grid stability.

As prime contractor, Catamount is responsible for site work and construction of the infrastructure, power distribution and utility connections. Northern Reliability will oversee the battery energy storage system, including design, component integration and containerization, on-site construction, installation and testing.

The Pinnacle Ridge Solar and Storage project is slated for completion by the end of this calendar year.

Robbie Hunter, president of the State Building and Construction Trades Council of California, wants urgent action to create local jobs and fight climate change. His solution is long-duration clean energy storage construction to address California’s “longterm needs, help us build a cleaner, more reliable electric grid, create and support thousands of good-paying jobs and provide new economic opportunity in long economically neglected communities.”

Writing for calmatters.org, he points to two shovel-ready storage projects, the Eagle Mountain pumped hydroelectric project in

the Inland Empire and the San Vicente Pumped Storage Project in San Diego.

“Together, these projects will support more than 20,000 good paying jobs, many in underserved areas with skyrocketing poverty and unemployment rates,” said Hunter.

The projects also will support industries ancillary to construction, such as building materials, heavy equipment and transportation. And, apprenticeships will be a part of these construction crews, he said.

Another trend in the energy sector is renewable reformation, where fossil-fuel processing facilities are retooled to handle renewable energy in one form or another. In Cheyenne, Wyo., the last barrel of crude was being processed at the Cheyenne Refinery before the plant is repurposed to produce renewable diesel.

“We ran the last barrel of crude on August 3 and expect to run the off final intermediates and products inventory in August,” Tim Go, HollyFrontier’s chief operating officer said during the company’s second-quarter call to investors. “We will then begin the conversion of certain units for renewable diesel production and continue to anticipate the Cheyenne Refinery conversion to be completed in the first quarter of 2022,” he added.

The company also plans to build a pre-

treatment unit at its Artesia, N.M., refinery for feedstock flexibility for the renewable diesel unit being built at the plant.

Hybrid ventures demand construction projects as well. In a tdworld.com article, Enel Green Power detailed its approach to construction of the Lily solar + storage project.

The company’s first hybrid project in North America marrying a renewable energy plant with utility-scale battery storage, Enel can store generated energy for delivery when needed.

Enel has a goal of expanding its position in the national market. The company plans to install about 1 gigawatt of battery storage capacity across its new and existing wind and solar projects in the United States over the next two years.
