Kenworth recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to announce the start of construction on a $45 million, 105,000 sq.ft. test building addition to its Class 8 truck assembly plant in Chillicothe, Ohio.
The expansion represents a nearly 17 percent increase to the 622,000 sq.ft. Kenworth Chillicothe plant, which is located on a 120acre site 50 mi. south of Columbus, Ohio. Kenworth will construct the new test building on the north side of the plant.
When completed in the second quarter of 2023, all testing and validation activities will relocate from current operations to the new test building and further enhance efficiency, productivity and quality.
“Kenworth’s major investment in the new test building demonstrates our continuing commitment to produce industry-leading Class 8 trucks, while supported by the dedication of our employees,” said Doug VanZuiden, Kenworth Chillicothe plant manager.
In addition to VanZuiden, other Kenworth Chillicothe participants in the groundbreaking ceremony were assistant plant managers J.D. Pinkerton and Jack Schmitt, and Craig McGuire, manufacturing engineering manager. Dignitaries included Tammy Eallonardo, director of economic development, Jeff Doles, board chairman and Jeff Graham, board vice chairman, all from Greater Chillicothe & Ross County Development; Matt Arnold, vice president of preconstruction operations, and Christian Simpson, preconstruction leader, both of Rudolph Libbe Inc., and Taylor Stepp, project manager, Ohio Southeast (OhioSE) Economic Development.
The Kenworth Chillicothe assembly plant recently received two 2022 Manufacturing Leadership Awards from the Manufacturing Leadership Council of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). The plant was honored for its Kenworth Paint Facility and Henrob Error Proofing project.
Last fall, Kenworth Chillicothe earned the 2021 Encouraging Environmental Excellence “E3” Platinum Award, the top award presented by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. The award honors a business or organization that expands its environmental program beyond its facility and demonstrates how its environmental stewardship efforts benefit the local community, region or larger geographical area.
Kenworth plants in Chillicothe, Ohio, and Renton, Wash., hold the prestigious International Standards Organization (ISO) 14001:2015 certification for effective environmental management systems established to help build Class 8 trucks in an environmentally sustainable manner. Kenworth’s medium duty trucks are produced at the PACCAR Ste. Thérèse, Quebec, assembly facility, which also achieved ISO 14001:2015 certification.

Felling Trailers continues to go “green” with its air operated bi-fold ramps system.
The air bi-fold ramps system, which first debuted at ConExpoCon/AGG 2020, is part of Felling’s controlled flow air ramp series, which the company launched more than a decade ago.
The new air bi-fold system is a revolutionary system that is perfect for the paving and low clearance markets, according to the manufacturer.
A key feature of Felling’s design is in the operation of the flip ramp. The flip ramp locks out fully when extending, preventing scraping or marring of the ground, which is undesirable, especially if it’s a new surface of any kind.
Another key feature is Felling’s controlled flow air ramp technology, which provides for soft ground contact of the ramp, keeping new surfaces free from being damaged.
“The last thing that you want if you just paved a new parking lot is getting new asphalt down and scraping it with your trailer when you load up at the end of the day. This system eliminates that. It’s all air-powered, a totally green system,” said Patrick Jennissen, Felling’s VP of sales and marketing.
Felling Trailer’s air bi-fold ramps are 45 in. wide by 11 ft. (7.5 ft. +3.5 ft.) wood inlaid. The 11 ft. air bi-fold ramps were designed to accommodate the load angle necessary when loading cumbersome low clearance equipment such as paving equipment and directional drills.
The air bi-fold ramps’ length provides the operator with a gentler, more gradual incline to provide ease in loading/unloading with its 9.5-degree load angle with the option of air ride suspension when the air is dropped.
Felling Trailers’ air-ramp technology allows operators to use the tow vehicles’ onboard air system to power the ramps,

SmithCo Unveils Side Dump With Hydraulic Suspension
SmithCo Side Dump Trailers mining side dump trailer with a fully dedicated hydraulic suspension system reduces issues for mines in cold climates and further enhances the advantages SmithCo side dump trailers offer to the mining industry.
Compared to conventional haul units, SmithCo side dumps, which were engineered by Simard Suspensions, offer lower ton-mile costs, a smaller footprint, less fuel use and many other benefits, the company said.
“SmithCo is helping to transform the mining industry and this is another example of how SmithCo is at the forefront of hauling innovations,” said Scott Lovell, SmithCo president and CEO. “We’re always pushing ourselves and our partners to offer more capabilities for our customers.”
Advantages of Hydraulic Suspensions for Mining
The advantages of side dumps with hydraulic suspensions for the mining industry are many. The Simard suspension system allows axle ends to move independently of one another to navigate washboard roads more easily, reducing wear and tear and improving stability.
A trailer with this system allows optimal axle load distribution whether fully loaded, partially loaded, or empty. It offers automatic transverse leveling before dumping and semi-active roll stabilization. The hydraulic system also eliminates the need for replacing air springs, shocks or trailing arms, which cuts down on maintenance and downtime. For mining operations in Arctic conditions, the hydraulic system eliminates the risk of air freeze-up issues.

Side Dump Trailers Open Doors for Mining
Mine operations around the world are discovering the advantages of hauling with custom SmithCo side dump trailers instead of conventional haul trucks. The smaller footprint of the tractor-trailer combo improves the feasibility of opening satellite mines.
Ton-mile costs are further lowered with less fuel use, less tire wear and less expensive tires, more easily serviceable parts and more uptime. Side dumps can dump their loads over barriers, berms or into crusher chutes and deliver payloads up to 200 tons when trained together, making them a nimble competitor to conventional mining trucks.
“We don’t know of any trailer that’s been built like this, and we’re eager to show what’s new and what’s next for mining trailers,” said Lovell.

Volvo Introduces Fossil-Free Steel With Hydrogen in Trucks
Volvo is now introducing fossil-free steel in its trucks. The steel is produced by the Swedish steel company SSAB and the heavy-duty electric Volvo trucks will be the first to include it, the company said.
The steel from SSAB is produced using a completely new technology, based on hydrogen. The result is a much lower climate impact than conventionally produced steel. Small scale introduction of the steel in Volvo’s heavy electric trucks will begin in the third quarter of 2022.
“We will increase the use of fossil-free materials in all our trucks to make them net-zero not only in operation — but also when it comes to the materials they are built of,” said Jessica Sandström, senior vice president product management, Volvo Trucks.
The first steel produced with hydrogen will be used in the truck’s frame rails, the backbone of the truck upon which all other main components are mounted. As the availability of fossil-free steel increases, it also will be introduced in other parts of the truck.
Ninety Percent of a Volvo Truck Can Be Recycled
Today, approximately 30 percent of the materials in a new Volvo truck come from recycled materials. And up to 90 percent of the truck can be recycled at the end of its life.
“We are continuously striving to further minimize our climate footprint. We are also moving towards greater circularity in both our operations and our trucks,” said Sandström. Volvo Group is collaborating with SSAB on fossil-free steel since 2021. The first machine, a load carrier made of fossil-free steel, was showcased in October 2021. Fossil-free steel will be an important complement to the traditional and recycled steel used in Volvo’s trucks.
Volvo Trucks is committed to the Paris agreement and to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in the value-chain by 2040, at the latest.
