Steady progress is the byword for the ongoing upgrade and rehabilitation of the Sweetwater River Bridge in Chula Vista, a $25.7 mil-

lion project (total cost) along the I805 in the South Bay area of San Diego County that is a joint-project between the California Department of Transportation and the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG).

The bridge and safety improvements are part of the I-805 South Express Lanes Projects, which cover more than 11 mi. between East Palomar Street in Chula Vista and the I-805/SR 15 interchange.

Flatiron West Inc. was awarded

Modular, prefabricated bridge designs have proven to be a critical component of accelerated bridge construction (ABC). The FHWA favors the ABC bridge construction technique especially in the design of highway bridges that feature varied spans, skew angles and construction materials. Prefab’s contributions to the ABC process has earned it a place at the state and city transportation levels, as well.

Research has shown that ABC techniques expedite construction of bridges through shortened project duration, lower material costs, less personnel and increased safety on the job site.

Technology such as Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil-Integrated Bridge Systems (GRS-IBS), Slide-In Bridge Construction (SIBC) and Prefabricated Bridge Elements and Systems (PBES) are major components of these ramped-up techniques.

High-performance materials used in prefabrication of bridge elements enhances the entire

construction operation. Their integration is expected to significantly improve the condition of the United States bridge network, increase the life-span of bridges and minimize the need for maintenance and repair, according to FHWA research.

site with a goal to reduce onsite construction time and mobility impact in building new bridges or rehabilitating or replacing existing bridges. Components are built outside traffic areas and transported to the job site where they’re installed quickly and efficiently.

ABC reduces traffic impacts, onsite construction time and weather-related delays and can minimize both environmental and roadway alignment impacts. PBES enhances ABC in improving site constructability, total project delivery time, material quality and product durability and work zone safety for the public and construction crews.

Over the past 20 years, the construction industry has transitioned to the ABC approach. Once prefabrication is completed off site, bridge components can be slid and moved into place quickly to reduce inconvenience to the public and also enhance the safety of construction workers, according to PCI Northeast, a chapter of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute.

The prefabricated bridge components undergo quality controls before they are transported to the site for assemblage. The use of ABC is now employed all over the world for the construction of roads and bridges because of all the benefits associated with it, which include improvement of workers’ safety, the overall quality and reduction of inconvenience to the general public.

The organization believes that “from the perspective of the client, accelerated bridge construction may require a change in how projects are approached and justified.�

The chapter’s website explains that an advan-

tage of employing ABC is reduced mobility impacts or, better still, reduced traffic flow. “This is because the flow of transportation network and the general safety of road users are linked directly to the impact of the activities associated with onsite construction.�

Onsite construction has been associated with significant social impacts on safety and mobility, according to PCI Northeast. The direct and indirect costs of traffic detours which can arise from the loss of a bridge during construction are sometimes greater than the actual cost of constructing the structure itself. “Other good reasons to use ABC have to do with site constructability issues. Most times, the ABC approach can provide solutions that are economical and more practical compared to solutions provided by conventional construction methods.�

Strength of Prefab Prefab bridge construction methods are proving to be a boon for the Lechmere Viaduct transit construction project across the Charles River in downtown Boston. The concrete arched viaduct, which opened to streetcars in 1912 and now carries Green Line trains, is being rehabilitated, and some of its track replaced.

The goal is to allow more Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) trains to pass over the bridge. “We will strengthen the structure of the 110-year-old viaduct to handle heavier loads and increased train frequency while also preserving its historic façade,â€? said MassDOT in announcing the project last year. On Aug. 3, the Oklahoma Transportation Commission approved the nearly $880 million County Improvements for Roads and Bridges plan that has been updated for State Fiscal Years 2021 through 2025.

FELLING ACQUIRES 2-CELL GANTRY ROBOT, INCREASING EFFICIENCY

Union Pacific Railroad demolished a 150-ft. portion of the century-old Tempe Town Lake Train Bridge at 8:13 a.m. on Aug. 2 to facilitate debris removal after the bridge was damaged in a train derailment and fire.

In the fall of 2019, Felling acquired a 2-Cell Gantry Robot with Fanuc R-100iC Robotic Arms. The Gantry Robot addition helps to reduce lead times by increasing production capabilities and efficiencies.

Using an innovative bridge slide technique that accomplishes in days what ordinarily would take months, construction crews have placed a new Fourth Street bridge over Interstate 40 in Flagstaff.

Mack Trucks introduced the Mack S852, an 85,000-lb. GAW (gross axle weight) rating of its proprietary tandem drive axles. The new rating comes as Mack celebrates 120 years of drive axle design, engineering and manufacturing.

Appealing a Ruling...

Court Reverses Its Decision on Dakota Access Pipeline BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) A federal appeals court on Aug. 5 reversed a judge’s order that shut down the Dakota Access pipeline pending a full environmental review.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit sided with pipeline owner Energy Transfer to keep the oil flowing, saying a lower-court judge “did not make the findings necessary for injunctive relief.”

But the appellate court declined to grant Energy Transfer’s motion to block the review, saying the company had “failed to make a strong showing of likely success.”

The appeals court said it expects the parties to “clarify their positions” in the lower court.

On July 6, U.S. District Judge James Boasberg ordered the pipeline closed within 30 days while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers fulfills his demand to conduct a more extensive environmental review than the one that allowed the pipeline to start moving oil near the Standing Rock Indian Reservation three years ago. This process could take more than a year.

Boasberg cited the “potential harm” that

the pipeline could cause before the Corps finishes its survey. He rejected the company's request to halt the order, sending the case to the three-judge appeals panel. The appellate court paused Boasberg's order in mid-July to give it time to consider the case.

Jan Hasselman, the EarthJustice attorney representing Standing Rock and other tribes who have signed onto the lawsuit, said the appeals court most recent ruling was not a setback.

“There is more to like than dislike in this ruling,” he said. “There will be a review and a new permit during the next administration.”

Standing Rock Tribe Chairman Mike Faith said the tribe was committed to continuing its fight.

“As the environmental review process gets underway in the months ahead, we look forward to showing why the Dakota Access Pipeline is too dangerous to operate.”

Energy Transfer spokeswoman Vicki Granado said the ruling “allows this important pipeline to continue to operate” and that the company looks forward to “continuing to work through the legal process to resolve all matters related to this pipeline.”

North Dakota state officials had lamented

the shutdown order as damaging to the state's economy, and Gov. Doug Burgum welcomed Wednesday’s appellate ruling. He said it cleared the way for “continued safe pipeline operations.”

In arguing against the closure, Energy Transfer said the line couldn't be shut off by the judge’s Aug. 5 deadline. The company said it would take three months to empty the pipe of oil and perform the time-consuming and expensive steps to keep the line from corroding without the flow of oil.

Texas-based Energy Transfer estimated it would cost $24 million to empty the oil and take steps to preserve the pipe. The company said it would have to spend another $67.5 million each year to maintain the line while it's inoperable.

The pipeline holds about 5 million barrels of oil when full.

It was the subject of months of protests in 2016 and 2017, sometimes violent, during its construction near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation that straddles the North Dakota-South Dakota border. The tribe took legal action against the pipeline even after it began carrying oil from North Dakota across South Dakota and Iowa to a shipping point

The $3.8 billion, 1,172-mi. (1,886 km) pipeline crosses beneath the Missouri River, just north of the reservation. The tribe draws its water from the river and has concerns about pollution. The company maintains the line is safe.

Permits for the project were originally rejected by the Obama administration, and the Army Corps of Engineers prepared to conduct a full environmental review. In February 2017, after President Donald Trump took office, the Corps scrapped the review and granted permits, concluding that running the pipeline under the Missouri River posed no significant environmental issues.

The Corps said that opinion was validated after an additional year of review, as ordered

by Boasberg, an Obama appointee, in 2017.

Boasberg ruled then that the Corps had “largely complied” with environmental law when permitting the pipeline but ordered more review because he said the agency did not adequately consider how an oil spill under the Missouri River might affect the Standing Rock Sioux's fishing and hunting rights, or whether it might disproportionately affect the tribal community. 

Crews Demolish Tempe Bridge After Train Derailment Union Pacific Railroad demolished a portion of the Tempe Town Lake Train Bridge at 8:13 a.m. on Aug. 2, 2020 to facilitate debris removal.

A 150-ft. portion of a centuryold bridge was demolished as part of the cleanup process after the bridge was damaged in a train derailment and fire in the city of Tempe and many partners assisted Union Pacific in the demolition.

Partners included Valley Metro, Southwest Gas, APS, SRP, ADOT, EPA and ADEQ. The demolition involved small precision charges placed in precut locations around the base of a small portion of the bridge, so that the damaged section and cars fell in a controlled manner between the south bank of the lake and Rio

Salado Parkway onto a grassy area.

Three days after the derailment, crews successfully finished removing the flammable industrial chemical, cyclohexanone, that was in three tanker cars at the scene. The chemical was removed to other cars and taken away from the site.

Now that the demolition is completed, crews will be able to clean the cyclohexanone residue from the tanker cars that had contained the chemical so that they can be safely disassembled and removed from the area.

Investigations are ongoing into the cause of the derailment.

Union Pacific Railroad officials said the demolished portion of the bridge will likely be cut into smaller pieces so it can be removed and there isn't a timeline yet for when

New I-40 Fourth Street Bridge Slides Into Place in Flagstaff Using an innovative bridge slide technique that accomplishes in days what ordinarily would take months, construction crews have placed a new Fourth Street bridge over Interstate 40 in Flagstaff.

The new, wider bridge will improve traffic flow and have a dedicated path for bicycles and pedestrians connecting the Flagstaff Urban Trail System across the interstate.

For its use of accelerated bridge construction techniques on this project, the Federal Highway Administration granted the

Arizona Department of Transportation an extra 5 percent of the construction cost on top of the normal federal allocation under its Increased Federal Share program. The federal allocation applies to the state’s costs, and this extra money allows ADOT to put that portion of state Highway User Revenue Fund proceeds toward other priorities.

The city of Flagstaff is paying for half of the cost of the new Fourth Street bridge in addition to covering the cost of landscaping and aesthetic enhancements.

This project also includes a resurfaced bridge deck and repairs to the pavement approaches to the Butler Avenue bridges over I-40. The total cost of the project for both bridges is $13.9 million.

The Fourth Street bridge scheduled its reopening for Aug. 3.

ADOT has been using different innovative methods to accelerate bridge construction for different bridges along I-40. This is the second time ADOT has used the bridge slide. The first time was installing new

Bellemont bridges at I-40 and Hughes Avenue, formerly Transwestern Road, west of Flagstaff.

Also last year, the agency used a process known as a geosynthetic reinforced soil-integrated bridge system to rebuild the bridges on I-40 at Meteor City Road, creating abutments by putting in alternating layers of granular fill reinforced with synthetic material. That process also cut construction time by months. 

Volvo CE Divests Blaw-Knox Paver Biz to Gencor Industries Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has signed an agreement to divest the North American Blaw-Knox paver business and associated assets to asphalt equipment manufacturer Gencor Industries (Gencor).

The Blaw-Knox business and associated assets will shift to Gencor, including the transfer of the manufacturing production line currently located in Shippensburg, Pa. Gencor has announced that it plans to continue the manufacturing of the Blaw-Knox paver line in south-central Pennsylvania and move to a location in Letterkenny Township.

The deal, which is expected to be finalized in the fourth quarter of 2020, will allow Gencor to manufacture and develop Volvo CE’s

current North American paver product line and market it under the Blaw-Knox brand. Gencor has announced that it will continue marketing and servicing the BlawKnox paver line through selected Volvo CE dealers in North America.

Sennebogen Hosts Demo Day at Its HQ

n June 18, 2020, Sennebogen held a live demo day of its 718 tree handlers at the company’s Stanley, N.C., headquarters.

Greg Roberts, Sennebogen tree care manager, said that his initial focus will be on building awareness of the Sennebogen brand and familiarity with the 718 and 738 tree handlers within the industry.

“I’ll be working to increase the number of demos so more people have a chance to touch and feel and see what these machines can do. The more exposure this machine has, the more successful it will be. These machines certainly have a ‘wow’ factor to them.”

The Sennebogen rubber-tired 718 M is a 47,180 lb. (21,400 kg) purpose-built tree care machine equipped with a hydraulic grapple saw attached to its 43 ft. (13 m) telescoping boom. It dismantles trees up to 75 ft. high, and is on rubber tires.

Its high-rise and tilting Maxcab operator station elevates the operator for an unobstructed view into the work zone, according to the manufacturer.

Its powerful hydraulics provides lifting capacity to grip, load and stack up to 3,700 lb. (1,700 kg), with the precise controls necessary to let operators perform delicate tree surgery.

The 718 R-HD E Series also dismantles trees up to 75 ft. high, and is on tracks for added stability.

The 718 is practical for municipal projects; roadside maintenance; commercial work; right of way clearing; utility line clearance; storm work; along rivers and streams; slopes and embankment maintenance; and other jobs that require the removal of more than trees.

MB Crusher Drum Cutter Knifes Through Hard Job Sites Construction projects on bridges and major roads often have a big impact on people travelling in and out of the city and motorists who are faced with road closures and an increase in traffic congestion.

While the work is carried out, city centers and major roads suffer from congestion.

The companies carrying out road works, road maintenance, excavation, renovation and trenching operations are well aware of the challenges as well as the operational and logistical problems they are faced with. Not to mention the added pressure to complete the work quickly and reopen the roads, these requirements substantially increase costs.

How to manage excavation and demolition projects, on bridges, tunnels and major roads effectively, efficiently, and smoothly.

Renovation work was required at the historic Augustusbrücke bridge over the Elbe river in Dresden, for the removal of the concrete which filled the arches and had caused structural damage.

The customer was seeking a solution that would be suitable for the machine already in use at the site — a Liebherr 918 excavator — and that would not cause any damage to the 18th-century structure.

MB Crusher provided the solution by recommending the use of an MB-R800 drum cutter (suitable for excavators between 10 and 22 tons).

First, the MB drum cutter was

used on the diagonal cement lines on the bridge to free up the expansion joints. This was the most challenging phase. However, the MB drum cutter was used without causing too many vibrations or any damage to the structure. Following this phase, the MB-R800 drum cutter was used to remove some of the concrete that filled the arches of the bridge, grinding as far as 9.8 ft. deep.

While in Berlin, an old bridge over the busy AVUS motorway needed to be completely demolished. One of the contractor’s objectives was to allow the traffic to continue moving on the carriageways across the bridge.

machines were used, after which two MB drum cutters were chosen — the MB-R800 drum cutter (suitable for excavators between 10 and 22 tons) and the MB-R900 drum cutter (suitable for excavators between 19 and 35 tons) to remove the various layers of cement and tarmac and to complete the project.

Another example, this time in Corsica, is provided by a company which needed to build a 1,476 ft. suspended footbridge, 16.4 ft. above the sea.

The challenge was the construction site itself, which was located between the land and the sea, on the cliff and was very narrow, with very little room for maneuver.

Therefore, it was a place where only a compact machine could be used. MB Crusher provided the solution by advising the customer to install on its Bobcat E85 midiexcavator the MB-R500 drum cutter, an extremely versatile machine that can be customized according to customer requirements, as in this case, with a rotation kit which enables the operator to rotate the cutter directly from the cab without

stopping work.

The MB-R500 drum cutter also features the cutting depth adjustment kit, the dust suppression kit, and the drum cover kit to reduce dust emission.

Returning to Germany, in Witzeeze, where a company needed to remove some of the concrete walls of a bridge and some of the rock found at a depth of 4.9 ft. at the bottom of the river to widen the river bed and increase water capacity. For this challenging operation, which is becoming increasingly frequent to prevent flood damage, the MB-R700 drum cutter was used as it is capable of operating underwater without damaging its hydraulic and mechanical systems, as with all the other MB drum cutters.

NFL Las Vegas Stadium Reaches ‘Substantial Completion’ LAS VEGAS (AP) Officials declared “substantial completion” of Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas after nearly 1,000 days were spent building the $2 billion home for the NFL’s relocated Raiders.

Aug. 7 had been the target date for completion since ground was broken in November 2017 for the 65,000-seat domed stadium just off the Las Vegas Strip.

“We still have to finish the job,'' Raiders team owner Mark Davis told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. He referred to a “punch list” of items still to be done.

Finishing touches in coming weeks wouldn't have prevented the stadium from hosting events, but officials acknowledge the coronavirus pandemic is affecting scheduling.

Felling Acquires 2-Cell Gantry Robot, Increasing Efficiency Felling Trailers has always strived to be at the forefront of innovation — from the trailers it manufactures to the equipment its team uses to build them.

In the fall of 2019, Felling acquired a 2Cell Gantry Robot with Fanuc R-100iC Robotic Arms. The Gantry Robot addition helps to reduce lead times by increasing production capabilities and efficiencies, according to the company.

“Our [Felling Trailers’] goal with adding the 2-Cell Gantry Robot is to provide a consistently high-quality product while reducing production lead times,” said Paul Radjenovich VP of operations of Felling Trailers.

Felling is no stranger to robot weld systems. The Gantry Robot is one of several robots that Felling has put into service throughout the years.

In early 2000, Felling Trailers purchased its first robotic welding system, an OTC Robotic Welding Cell. The OTC was utilized to produce a variety of ramps for its 90A production operator staging the fixture for the next gantry robot program run. plus ramp trailer models.

Then in 2010, the company purchased its second robot, a Genesis Robotic Welder. The Genesis is utilized in the production of ramps, dump trailer doors, and other trailer components.

With the recent addition of the 2-Cell Gantry Robot, the company can weld a trailer to framelevel, hitch to tail including cross members, frame rails, headboard, and tailboard.

No matter the level of automation that a robot can provide, there remains the need for an operations team. The Gantry Robot’s operations team consists of the production operator, CWI weld trainer, fixture designer, and a maintenance technician.

The weld trainer and fixture designer work together to layout the fixtures needed for trailer builds and the programming.

The production operator’s role is to place trailer components into the fixture and verify tolerances Felling Trailers’ 2-Cell Gantry Robot during production run. before the robot starts its work.

The robot’s objective then is to weld the trailer to its “frame-level.”

While the robot is welding the frame, the operator monitors the welding process while staging the next fixture to run through the gantry robot program. Overall the framelevel weld production process is completed roughly 30 percent faster than a manual process.

With the frame-level weld complete, the trailer moves on to an assigned weld team to add axles, tie-downs and other customer-specific weld-on options.

To date, the 2-Cell Gantry Robot has completed 150 units built between two of Felling’s most popular model lines. As more model lines are added, new fixtures will be designed and programming written.

“The continuous addition of fixtures will help develop multiple teams to work together and advance their training,” said Chris Berg project manager.

Along with adding more model lines to the Gantry Robot’s database, Felling also will be adding trailer components such as beavertails to maximize its productivity based on product demand.

“We have seen significant growth over the last several years, and with that comes the need to increase manufacturing capacity to meet market demands for our product,” said Radjenovich.

The addition of the 2-Cell Gantry Robot has created a new step in the production cycle of trailers. The increased production capabilities have, in turn, created additional jobs on the front end of the build cycle for engineers, fixture designers, fabricators and material handlers to feed the robot. Then on the backside of the production cycle, once the robot has completed the trailer to frame–level, there is the need for weld teams to complete the weld production cycle, bringing the process full circle.

This summer, massive precast concrete pier caps were lifted into place atop new viaduct support columns. Joe Pesaturo, MBTA director of communications said prefab construction was chosen for the bridge project because of limited construction site access and limited to no construction material staging and storage areas.

He said the project enhanced safety for construction workers by reducing fall hazards.

“Quality control is better in a manufacturing environment that is out of weather conditions and provides an ergonomic work environment,” he added.

Pesaturo attributed improved scheduling to prefabrication and support foundations being able to advance in parallel.

Cost savings, in addition to the notion that prefabricated elements have less errors and create greater efficiency, also were benefits of this construction method, he said.

“A major benefit is the efficiency of construction field operations,” said Pesaturo. “In the dense areas of Cambridge, Somerville and Medford [Massachusetts], work timeframes for the installation of large pre-cast beams are limited to weekends, due to the project’s proximity to a highway and commuter rail corridors.

“Prefabrication allows for manufacturing to occur offsite during the standard work week. Pre-cast beams are transported to the work site late Friday. Then the beams are installed in their final locations during roadway closures over the weekend. Roadways are then reopened early Monday morning.”

Economical, High-Quality Prefabricated girders are providing faster and safer construction on the Northgate pedestrian and bicycle bridge project in Seattle this summer. In July and August, Seattle DOT (SDOT) crews will be installing the first set of bridge spans linking a major residential and employment destination neighborhood.

Ethan Bergerson, SDOT media relations lead, said that prefab girders on the project “are more economical and of superior quality because they are manufactured in a controlled environment.”

He explained that “the girders we are using on the Northgate Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge are also prestressed, which provides long-term durability and fewer maintenance requirements.”

SDOT designed the new, accessible pedestrian and bike bridge over Interstate 5 in Northgate to improve access to communities, services and opportunities as it connects the east and west sides of the interstate.

“It’ll also reduce travel time for people walking and biking between the east and west sides of I-5,” according to an SDOT project update. “When complete, the bridge will help connect the neighborhood’s thriving job and retail centers with the rest of the city and region.”

The new bridge, for which the girders were pre-built, will span about 1,900 ft. over I-5, landing at North Seattle College on the west side and near a future light rail station on the east side. The spans being installed make up the portion of the bridge that’s referred to locally as the “hairpin turn.”

The first hydraulically-driven temporary lift bridges in the United States, the steel detour structures are expected to be in service for two years. The north lift bridge is 24 ft. wide with 60- and 100-ft. approaches and a 66-ft. lift span.

The south bridge, at 30 ft. wide, has 80- and 100-ft. approaches, a lift span of 90 ft., and a 5-ft. walkway along the south side of its 210-ft. length.

The north lift bridge was commissioned in October 2019 and the south lift bridge in December 2019, according to Acrow.

Bob Rose, Northeast regional sales manager, said there were challenges that made the project technically difficult during the installation stage. Even with “an extremely congested construction site and a very small build area, we were able to successfully build, install, test and get the structures completely operational in a short period of time,” said Rose.

The heavily traveled Unionport Bridge is the only link between the Bruckner Expressway and Cross Bronx Expressway to the Hutchinson River Parkway and destinations north. The bridge had deteriorated and was deemed structurally deficient and in dire need of replacement.

“The rise of module assembly yards — strategically located sites for fabrication and assembling building elements that can then be transferred to a building site for rapid assembly — borrows some of the cost-efficient practices of manufacturing for the construction industry,” the report said.

“Modularization has potential to significantly affect productivity and margins for engineering and construction [E&C] firms. In the year ahead, E&C firms could consider evaluating the potential for adding a module assembly yard to production. They can explore the potential cost savings that pre-assembly and modularization could bring to projects,” it continued.

New Foundations Make Job Challenging BRIDGE from page 1

Work began in March 2019 and is scheduled to be delivered in February 2022, but due to the fast-paced progress, Flatiron West is looking at a fall 2021 delivery date.

The bridge, built in 1975, is being widened to have 10-ft. shoulders on either side, which improves safety.

Other elements include maintenance for columns, decks and approach slabs; improvements for the northbound connector onto westbound SR 54; and the installation of a new concrete barrier for the full length of the bridge to separate the traffic.

Construction & Design The original design plans called for two consecutive stages in terms of construction, but Flatiron determined that both sections could be dealt with simultaneously.

“This is helping to save overall construction time,” said Caltrans’ Manuel Rivas, construction engineer. “Flatiron is doing all it can to finish the project in the fall of 2021.”

Fifty-plus wooden piles were driven by the end of last year for the bridge support system.

“They went down 100 feet for the permanent construction and 50 cast-insteel piles [CISS] were drilled,” said Rivas.

This process had the casings placed, which were then filled with concrete.

All the column and foundation work was completed in 2020.

“Even though the two sections are being built concurrently, we’re about to go into stage 2 as far as traffic handling,” said Rivas. “In the next two to three weeks, we will be shifting traffic easterly on the northbound direction.

This project is mainly about the bridge, but we are also reconfiguring the approach gore area going northbound so that we can match the new features on the improved bridge.”

Equipment A Manitowoc 200-ton crane was vital for the work on the foundations and columns in the middle section of the bridge, according to Rivas.

“The tall crane was very visible from the freeway as it dragged piles and lowered down the steel cages,” said Rivas.

“However, it did not create any impacts to the public traffic.”

recycled on other projects and others sent to recycling centers.

New materials will include 3,500 linear ft. of driven piles; 500 ft. of drainage pipes; 3,000 cu. yds. of concrete; 1.2 million pounds of rebar; and 2,000 linear ft. of concrete for the barrier.

Flatiron West is utilizing a mixture of owned and rented equipment, including: a Link-Belt 75 RT hydraulic crane; a Cat 349F excavator with a hydraulic impact hammer for low profile pile driving; a Cat D6 swamp dozer for water logged areas, loaders, backhoes; and other standard equipment.

“It was normal pile driving wear and tear, but we pretty much had a mechanic on-site daily, making small corrections and just being there to keep things in tip-top shape,” said Joe Fontana, Flatiron West’s project manager, who stressed the importance of routine maintenance and daily inspections to minimize equipment down time.

For this project, Flatiron West is renting equipment from dealerships such as United Rentals, Sunbelt Rentals, Otay Mesa Sales, Hawthorne Machinery Co. for Cat pieces, RDO Equipment for John Deere pieces, and American Piledriving Equipment Inc. for pile driving equipment.

Highway, Bridge Improvements “The bridge is in fairly good condition for being 45 years old,” said Rivas.

“The improvements are in line with Caltrans’ mission to provide a safe, sustainable, integrated and efficient transportation system to enhance California's economy and livability, as are many of the corridor improvements. On the northbound side of the

bridge, between the main lanes and connector, there was just a raised median island that was not up to current standards. The new shoulders and concrete barrier will give drivers more security. Bridge shoulder widening in the median will eliminate the feeling of being confined by a barrier coming close to divers and will allow a place to pull out in an emergency.”

These improvements have been in the planning for many years and are welcomed by motorists.

The bridge and road infrastructure upgrade were designed by Caltrans.

“The grading between the main lanes and the ramp on the northbound side did not allow for the construction of the barrier as was required,” said Rivas, “so per-design, we had to remove a 20 foot wide section of the existing bridge and reconstruct it to a proper grade so we could have the concrete barrier on top. To maintain the stability of the existing bridge, perdesign, we had to install a temporary support system. This removal and working within the river footprint have been challenging.”

The current upgrade is expected to extend the lifespan of the bridge by 20 to 30 years. Future work on the bridge will include an overlay of the deck.

The traffic management plan is utilizing lane closures and detours as the work progresses. The COVID-19 outbreak, as has been the case for many projects across the country, has reduced traffic volumes and provided opportunities for crews to accelerate work on the bridge.

Casey’s Truck Salvage World Sees Success Under Its New Ownership When approached with the opportunity to purchase Casey’s Truck Salvage World in October 2018, Nick Marcezin knew that there could not have been a better plan.

Acquiring the Depew, N.Y., company that was founded in the 1960s made perfect sense to him. Already familiar from a business relationship with his company, Twin Village Recycling, Marcezin believed it would be an exceptional pairing.

From years of purchasing the scrap metal after the resalable parts were removed and added to Casey’s inventory, he was now able to unify the two, streamlining the process. Immediately after the purchase was completed, Marcezin went right to work with his wife, Leana.

The first move was to bring in Marty Brzyski, assigning him the position of general manager.

Brzyski was very familiar with the company, having previously worked there from 2007 to 2014.

Over the years, Marcezin envisioned the idea of bringing Brzyski aboard at Twin Village, but the two never seemed able to finalize a plan due to other commitments. Once Casey’s was brought into the fold, all plans seemed to come together.

Excited and motivated, the two went right to work on ideas and processes to make a business that was already well known, even better. Improvements early on included computer systems for document processing, inventory counts and administrative needs. Nearly all the staff remains under employment with the new ownership.

“One of the most important pieces that allow us to be successful here at Casey’s now, is the trust we share and the common goal in growing the business,” Brzyski said. “We all agree that the most important aspect is the customer and their faith in us to come through, and at a fair price. Most of our customers are repeat and referrals from others who have had a great experience with us here.”

Another piece of the success that is allowing for growth and improvement is the flexibility and relationship shared with Marcezin and Brzyski.

“The freedom and trust they put in my experience and knowledge to do my job — from purchasing the correct equipment, working with the customers, and following up on warranty

and service, is what really allows for the growth and success we are experiencing here at Casey’s,” said Brzyski.

Multiple instances were mentioned with Marcezin, Brzyski and the company all going above and beyond for their customers — including taking parts home to be delivered in the night, helping to rescue broken down vehicles and opening up the doors no matter the day or hour.

When asked what the territory coverage of Casey’s may be, it was a very simple response: anywhere in the world.

n June, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers helped customers all around the world buy and sell thousands of used equipment items and trucks. With COVID-19 affecting everyone’s lives and businesses, live auctions continue to be conducted 100 percent online in order to help keep everyone safe.

Leveraging the full power of its online technologies, bidder participation surged, and June saw the busiest week in Ritchie Bros.' more than 60 year history when it sold 35,000-plus equipment items and trucks in 29 online auctions across five countries in just five days. CEG

This 2015 Wirtgen W250I cold planer (lot #142) sold for $470,000 at an offsite auction in Gonzales, La., about 60 miles west of New Orleans.

June’s top big ticket seller was this 2008 Manitowoc 14000 Series 2 200-ton self-erecting crawler crane (lot #1076) that sold at the Atlanta, Ga., auction for $480,000.

This 2015 John Deere 1050K dozer (lot #228) sold in Fort Worth, Texas, for $355,000.

Ritchie Bros. sold two of these 2018 Caterpillar D6T LGP dozers (lot #938,939) for approximately $370,000 at the three-day Edmonton, AB auction.

At Ritchie Bros.’ Fort Worth, Texas, auction in June, this 2017 John Deere 460E 6x6 articulated dump truck (lot #198) sold for $410,000.
