Nevada’s growing population and an increase in travel made the widening project of State Route 160 necessary in Southern Nevada.

The Nevada Department of Transportation awarded a $58.6 million contract to Aggregate Industries SWR (AISWR) to widen and upgrade a 28-mi. leg of Blue Diamond Road/State Route 160 between Pahrump and Mountain Springs. Six miles of the project stretches over mountainous terrain, and 22 mi. of roadway needs various enhancements and roadbed modification. see BLASTING page 34

Colorado plans to add another tolled express lane on Interstate 70 near Idaho Springs. The lane is expected to open in early 2021 and will extend from the Veterans Memorial Tunnels to the U.S. 40 exit at Empire Junction.

On July 1, officials gathered in Southern Nevada to celebrate the start of construction on Google’s new data center and Cloud region in Henderson.

“Today we’re announcing new infrastructure investments in the state of Nevada: a new Google data center and Google Cloud region,” said Tariq Shaukat, president, partner and industry platforms of Google, in a statement. “These investments will expand our footprint in the southwestern U.S., creating more jobs in the area, improving connectivity and speed for users of Google services and Google Cloud customers and ensuring that Nevada will become one of the world’s onramps to the internet.”

In addition to Google’s Andrew Silvestri, head of data center public policy and community development and Jacquelline Fuller, president of Google.org, the groundbreaking was attended by Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen, Rep. Susie Lee and Gov. Steve Sisolak.

Data centers are the “engines of the internet” which support searches, ads, maps, videos, email and its Cloud. The company has invested $47 billion from 2016 to 2018 and plans to invest another $13 billion in the United States alone, which includes recently-announced plans for data center near Phoenix and Salt Lake City.

USDOT Allots $300M for Projects in Arizona, California, Washington State The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced a total of $300 million in federal funding allocations to three rail transit projects in Arizona, California and Washington.

Funding is provided through FTA’s Capital Investment Grants (CIG) Program.

FTA is allocating $100 million in appropriated Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 CIG funding for each of the following projects: The South Central Light Rail Extension in Phoenix, Ariz.; the Westside Subway Section 3 Project in Los Angeles, Calif.; and the Federal Way Light Rail Project in Seattle, Wash.

“These federal grants to Arizona, California and Washington will improve mobility and the quality of life for those who depend on public transit every day,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.

With this announcement, FTA has advanced funding for 25 new CIG projects throughout the nation under this administration since Jan. 20, 2017,

The CIG Program provides funding for major transit infrastructure capital investments nationwide. Projects accepted into the program must go through a multi-year, multi-step process according to requirements in law to be eligible for consideration to receive program funds.

Yanmar Holdings Acquires ASV Holdings Inc.; Deal to Close in Third Quarter ’19 Yanmar Holdings has announced Yanmar’s entry into a definitive agreement to acquire compact equipment manufacturer ASV Holdings Inc. (“ASV”), a designer and manufacturer of renowned compact tracked loaders (“CTLs”) and skid-steer loaders (“SSLs”). Yanmar is to acquire ASV through the mechanism of a statutory merger.

Wacker Neuson Expands N. American Leadership, Appoints Reichetseder Pres.

The Wacker Neuson Group has appointed Gert Reichetseder as president and CEO — North America, effective July 1, 2019. This addition to the Wisconsin-based executive management board demonstrates the importance of the growing North American construction and agricultural machinery market to the global organization, while strengthening local leadership and ongoing commitment to the United States and Canada, according to the company.

Reichetseder has served as commercial director of Wacker Neuson's largest production plant in Linz, Austria, since 2011. His successful international career includes several senior-level positions with Engel Global. As part of his new role, Reichetseder will act as spokesperson for the North American executive management board, which includes Johannes Schulze Vohren, executive vice president sales and marketing North America, and Ryan Gile, executive vice president operations and COO North America.

“This is a big transition for me and my wife,” said Reichetseder, “as I am changing my home base from Austria to Milwaukee, after having been in charge of our Linz facility for the past eight years. However, the potential of

N.M. AFB Upgrades for ‘Space Defense’ ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) The U.S. Air Force has begun construction on a facility at Kirtland Air Force Base that officials said will play a role in the proposed “space defense.”

The Albuquerque Journal reports the Air Force Research Laboratory’s $12.8 million Space Control Laboratory will consolidate efforts on the New Mexico base.

The new facility will include office and lab space for 65

civilian and military contractors. It will contain a 5,000 sq.ft. high-bay laboratory space and more than 5,000 sq. ft. of secure office, laboratory and meeting space.

Air Force Col. Eric Felt said space is now “a war-fighting domain.”

President Donald Trump has proposed creating a new U.S. Space Force — a plan that has hit widespread resistance on Capitol Hill. 

Work Begins on $70M I-70 Express Lane DENVER (AP) Colorado plans to add another tolled express lane on Interstate 70 near Idaho Springs.

The Denver Post reports the $70 million project west of Denver will include a 12-mi. (19-km) zone where construction began July 15.

Officials said the new westbound express lane will mirror an eastbound

lane that opened in 2015.

The lane is expected to open in early 2021 and will extend from the Veterans Memorial Tunnels to the U.S. 40 exit at Empire Junction.

Officials said the construction will widen portions of the highway to accommodate the narrow lane, which will revert to a shoulder during off-

peak hours.

The Colorado Department of Transportation will set varying toll rates for the lane.

Democratic Gov. Jared Polis said the toll lanes are “temporary solutions” for Highway 70.

Kenworth T880 Popular With Liquid Stone Concrete Drivers Everything is big in Texas, including concrete. The state of Texas produced the most concrete in the United States last year, nearly surpassing the combined amount by California and Florida, the second and third leading producers, according to data from the National Ready Mix Concrete Association (NRMCA).

Since 1997, Liquid Stone Concrete has made a name for itself providing ready mixed concrete to the south Dallas — Fort Worth Metroplex area. With concrete plant locations in Burleson and Midlothian, the company provides concrete for residential and commercial projects within a 25mile radius of each plant. MX-11 engine, rated at 430 hp and 1,650 lb.-ft. of torque. To improve the Kenworth T880 mixer weight savings even more, the company went with a 7-axle configuration to help maximize its gross combination weight of 80,000 lbs.

Since concrete has a finite amount of time before it needs to be poured, it is essential to run trucks that consistently make deliveries without delay. If a truck is sidelined due to mechanical issues, the concrete will go to waste.

“The Kenworth T880 has been a dependable truck for us,” said Karmy. “As you know, it gets hot down here in Texas in the summer months. With the high temperatures, we’ll start making deliveries early in the morning, and even then, we only have about an hour and a half to complete delivery after filling up the mixer with con-

crete at the plant. It’s important for us to operate trucks that we know will consistently make on-time deliveries and so far, our Kenworth T880s have been solid for us.”

Liquid Stone Concrete also operates one Kenworth T880 cement tanker, equipped with the PACCAR MX-11 engine, rated at 430 hp and 1,650 lb.-ft. of torque, to transport cement powder to one of the company’s plants.

When it comes time for Liquid Stone Concrete to service its trucks, the company sends its Kenworth T880s operating out of the Burleson plant to MHC Kenworth — South Fort Worth, and the trucks operating out of the Midlothian plant to MHC Kenworth — South Dallas. The company currently has two Kenworth T880s on order with MHC Kenworth — South Fort Worth.

“The service I receive from MHC Kenworth is top notch,” said Karmy. “It’s played a role in our decision to continue to add Kenworth trucks to our fleet. The service shop excels at identifying issues and solving them in a timely manner so that they can get our trucks back on the road. The better we are at minimizing downtime, the more profitable we are.”

The Kenworth T880S, featuring a PACCAR MX-11 engine rated at 430-hp and 1,650 lb.-ft. of torque and a Con-Tech Manufacturing bridge-formula rear-discharge BridgeKing mixer, was purchased for $190,000. The entire purchase amount was donated to CIM, which supports the CIM program through scholarships for students pursuing a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Concrete Management at Middle Tennessee State University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Texas State University and California State University — Chico.

The major contribution to the CIM program was made possible due to Kenworth, Con-Tech Manufacturing and Kenworth of Central Florida, and Kenworth supplier partners Meritor, Watson & Chalin, Alcoa and Allison Transmission.

“The CIM auction provided us a unique opportunity to add a T880S to our fleet,” said Karmy. “Even though the rest of our T880 models feature the set-back axle, we were in a position where we needed to add another truck. By doing so through the CIM auction, we were able to generate a substantial donation to CIM’s program. We began putting the T880S to use in April, and, so far, it has performed well.

Fleet Releases Survey Results Fleet Advantage, an innovator in truck fleet business analytics, equipment financing, and lifecycle cost management, announced results of its latest industry-wide survey addressing the gap that remains for todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fleets in the way they utilize data and business intelligence to run their trucks and fleet operations. There are still fleets today that arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t leveraging data to see their Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), many canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t use the data because it lives in disparate sources, and others have no way of sharing reports across the organization, according to the company.

The online survey was presented to more than 2,000 fleet executives during April 2019. While Big Data has been increasingly utilized across virtually every industry, approximately 33 percent of respondents said they still do not have a software platform that allows them to manage their fleetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s TCO all in one place.

According to the survey results, a quarter of fleet executives (26 percent) said their current software analysis platform does not combine financial and operations data together; Another 48 percent said their current platform does not provide benchmarking reports for the industry or other similar fleets; And approximately 62 percent said their platform does not or theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re unsure if it

produces a P&L statement for each truck in their fleet.

Regarding data that fleets are receiving from their trucks, roughly a third (30 percent) said they do not have easy access to reporting and analysis of this data. This is critical since 80 percent of respondents agree that access to better reporting in an easy-touse fashion would lead to better decisionmaking for their fleets.

Many fleet executives are still unable to share critical data and information across the organization. Data found in these reports is crucial for various departments to collaborate on the right strategies to implement across the entire organization. With planned Interstate 17 flex lanes between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point set for construction starting by 2021, the state budget provides the additional funding needed to also complete widening I-17 south of where the flex system will be built.

This $130 million investment to complete new third lanes in both directions of I-17 between Anthem and Black Canyon City is one of many in the budget that will expand and preserve transportation infrastructure across Arizona.

Appropriations from the State General Fund include $10 million for an ADOT study on adding lanes to Interstate 10 between Phoenix and Tucson and $10.5 million for preserving state highways to extend the life of existing pavement.

In addition to baseline funding for transportation and infrastructure, the budget includes more than $95 million in appropriations from the State General Fund for targeted transportation projects that will improve safety and spur economic development in Greater Arizona. This includes $28 million for expanding U.S. 95 between Yuma and Yuma Proving Ground, that region’s largest employer. There is $20 million to help build two Interstate 40 interchanges needed to accommodate growth in Kingman, with the city providing the remainder of the funding required.

ADOT has been working to advance projects to improve traffic flow and safety along 23 mi. of I-17 between Anthem and Sunset Point north of Phoenix. More than $190 million was already committed to building flex lanes north of Black Canyon City as well as adding 7 mi. of a third southbound lane directly south of that project.

Investing an additional $130 million over three years will allow ADOT to complete all sections of new third lanes.

Combined with the flex lanes, this increased capacity will enhance safety and help address traffic flow challenges and backups that occur due to crashes and when many drivers are traveling to or from Arizona’s high country on summer weekends.

The Maricopa Association of Governments is providing

$50 million in regional funds to help fund the widening of I17 between Black Canyon City and Anthem.

The I-17 flex lanes will operate as a separate two-lane roadway carrying one direction of traffic at a time depending on the greatest need along the steep 8 mi. between Black Canyon City and Sunset Point. With gates at each end and separated by concrete barrier from the current southbound lanes, the flex lanes will be able to carry heavier northbound traffic on a Friday or southbound traffic on a Sunday. They also can keep traffic moving if there is a closure in that stretch.

Required environmental studies for the I-17 corridor are scheduled to be completed by this summer, with the projects scheduled for completion by 2023.

The budget commits $10 million from the State General Fund to an ADOT study, in collaboration with the Maricopa Association of Governments and Gila River Indian Community, on adding a lane in each direction and improving interchanges on I-10 between Phoenix and Casa Grande.

Completing a design concept report and environmental study will determine needs and costs, and establish how the improvements will be phased. This process is on track to begin this year with an accelerated 18-month timeline.

The $51.1 million in funds, including $10.5 million in additional funding from the State General Fund, will allow ADOT to preserve the road surface along more miles of state highway through treatments known as fog seals and chip seals. These investments are critical to extend the life of existing pavement by sealing road surfaces against the ravages of weather, heavy use and time.

The budget’s other transportation infrastructure investments from the State General Fund include: • $18 million for counties and cities and towns; • $10 million for local aviation projects; • $6.5 million for Mesa to construct a State Route 24 bridge over Ellsworth Road; and • $2.8 million for Globe to repair or replace the Jesse Hayes Road over Pinal Creek. 

The contract calls for AISWR to widen the highway from two to four lanes, as well as to make other safety improvements. AISWR is serving as the general contractor and is responsible for all aspects of the project, including management of the subcontractors which include C&S Construction, Sanders Construction, Stewart & Sundell Concrete, Team Construction, Soil Tech, Black Canyon Construction, Coughlin Company, Red Star Fence and Natina Stain.

“The first portion of the project stretches over Mount Potosi and the scope includes widening out the road from two lanes to four lanes,” said Ron Adair, AISWR project manager. “We’re also installing a concrete barrier down the middle to enhance the safety of the road.”

According to Tony Illia, public information officer of the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), the highway has a lot of curves and inclines, so there were

crashes caused by drivers swinging into the on-coming lane to pass slower-moving traffic, as well as people leaving their lane when they were drowsy or distracted.

Safety improvements were of paramount importance.

The mountainous terrain presents unique challenges, as the construction team must cut through rock while managing traffic flow.

“There’s a lot of rock cut that we have to do on the roads,” Adair said. “But it’s also up through canyons, so we have to utilize tight work quarters so we can control traffic flow and continue building.

There’s a lot of challenges to keep the traffic moving, especially during blasting. There’s really nowhere to detour traffic or divert them, so proper project planning is critical.”

Sanders Construction of Las Vegas is the subcontractor for the dynamite work.

In addition to the demolition work, Adair cited the 75,000-ton forklift needed to set box culvert as a different aspect of the job rented

“The project has gone smooth so far,” Adair said. “The main challenges have been the cold weather, the rock cut and managing traffic flow. The safety of the traveling public is always our biggest concern.”

Adair noted that the last portion of the job calls for a 21-mi. road bed modification.

“Road bed modification is an effective and economical way to stabilize soil with cement and avoid the costly removal of soil from the jobsite. Pulverizers grind the asphalt, and then we blend the soil with 2 percent cement. This method saves time and significantly cuts down on truck traffic that would otherwise be used to haul contaminated soil from a construc-

tion site,” he said.

Gyru-Star Screening Bucket Makes Debut in Western U.S. AU Equipment LLC has added U.K.-based Gyru-Star’s compact screening bucket attachments to its wide selection of crushing and screening equipment.

AU Equipment is the regional distributor of Gyru-Star for the Southwest throughout Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah.

“With the growing need of our customers and contractors in the region to process smaller quantities of material on site in a timely manner, we added the Gyru-Star range of star screening buckets to provide an inexpensive way to separate the good material from the waste product,” said Dominic McNamara, owner of AU Equipment. “Therefore, only hauling away the waste saves money on trucking, importing expensive material and reusing what is already there on the job site.”

Gyru-Star screening buckets offer a quick, efficient way to screen compost, aggregate, sand, gravel and top soil, which then can be used by landscapers on site, by pipeline companies and utility contractors for backfill and shading materials. The range of models can be used on any brand of excavators ranging from 1 ton to 20 ton and on all makes and models of skid steers with hydraulic oil flow of 17 GPM or above.

The rows of rotating polyurethane stars with a unique shape effectively screen and separate rocks and vegetation. The flexibility and spacing of the stars, reduces the potential for clogging, according to the manufacturer.

While engineered for durability with high-grade Hardox steel, the attachments are best suited for landscaping and smaller scale contracting applications. The higher the quality of the source material the greater the productivity.

The Gyru-Star’s polyurethane stars make the bucket much lighter, according to the manufacturer.

Despite its large screening area, many of the Gyru-Star screening buckets are small enough to be transported in the bed of many standard pick-up trucks.

“The ability to load the GyruStar bucket in the bed of the truck to take to a customer’s job site and be up and running in minutes has allowed AU Equipment to clearly demonstrate the unit’s efficiency and flexibility to the local contractors across the area of representation,” said McNamara.

Many screening buckets on the market today require a double-acting hydraulic circuit whereas the Gyru-Star makes use of a standard single-acting circuit. It does not

require a case drain line when installed on excavators and skid steer-compatible models come plug and play ready from the factory.

The Lumberjack Show was started with the idea of furthering our lumbering industry and way of life, along with that of farming. This was going to be carried out by contests that showed the arts and skills of the logger, especially those skills that were dying out due to mechanization.
