Buesing Corporation’s recycling division recently completed the installation of a new aggregate plant at its Chandler, Ariz., site. Replacing a diesel hydraulic driven plant, the new all electric configuration has doubled its production capabilities without increasing the yard’s footprint. Liebherr USA Co. Demonstrates Products at Its Customer Day Liebherr USA Co. hosted visitors from across the globe at its first Customer Day on May 12.

The company highlighted and demonstrated a diverse range of products across all 10 segments, including earthmoving, material handling technology, deep foundation machines, tower cranes, mining, mobile and crawler cranes, maritime cranes, concrete technology and components, as well as refrigerators and freezers.

New Products for U.S. Market Liebherr USA Co. unveiled various new products to the U.S. market, including the TA230 articulated dump truck; LTM 11105.2 all-terrain crane; LTM 1300-6.3 all-terrain crane; LR 1700 crawler crane; LR 1400 SX crawler crane; LR 1250.1 unplugged crawler crane; LRB 23 piling and drilling rig; 36 XXT truck mounted concrete pump; 80-LP line pump; and PR 776 dozer.

Having formally moved into the expanded campus in April 2020, Customer Day also provided the opportunity to reveal the $60 million enhancement to the facilities: • a 60,000 sq. ft. administrative building • an 82,000 sq. ft. workshop and training

facility • a 92,000 sq. ft. parts distribution warehouse including retail operations • a one-story 7,500 sq. ft. wash bay building • a guard house The new campus will help Liebherr serve customers across various product segments.

It significantly increases production operations for concrete pumps and repair capacity for mobile and crawler cranes, as well as for construction equipment. The new shop also is equipped to handle the growing numbers of Liebherr earthmoving equipment.

Event for Customers, Partners, Families The event launch allowed Liebherr customers to join in facility tours and experience product presentations, including a live application show of various new machines. More than 30 exhibits throughout the facility grounds were on display, and product experts were on hand to explain special features of the new machines and give insights on using established machines.

Ted McKeon, president and publisher of Construction Equipment Guide (CEG), has announced the promotion of Patrick Kiel to the position of key accounts manager. Kiel has been an account representative of CEG for 16 years.

“Since 2006 when Patrick joined Construction Equipment Guide, he has shown extraordinary skills in working with and developing marketing programs with our customers in the midwestern and northwestern regions of the United States,” said McKeon. “Under Patrick’s guidance, Construction Equipment Guide has experienced tremendous growth in both print and web-based advertising sales. Patrick also has developed the ability to gather pertinent industry knowledge and trends and uses that information to help his clients achieve their marketing goals.”

Crews Begin Interstate 10 Widening Project Near El Paso Officials with the Texas Department of Transportation El Paso held a press conference recently to discuss the new construction project to widen Interstate 10.

The goal of the project is to “improve capacity, operation, circulation and safety” along the interstate, according to a statement.

The project, which will widen the interstate along west El Paso to state line, began on May 31 and will be completed in three years.

The I-10 Widening West Project adds lanes and makes other improvements from the North Mesa interchange (Exit 11) toward the New Mexico state line.

The cost of the project is $174.3 million.

“The project would widen the lanes from four lanes to six lanes,” said Jonathan Concha, west area engineer of TxDOT. “The project will provide enhanced safety in the area as well as help increase mobility.

“The project does include some safety features, which include reversing the ramps, this allows the merge conditions to occur on the frontage roads, we’ll also add high mass lighting for the widened section and safety lighting for the other portion and wrong-way driving signs that have red flashing LED’s lights,” added Concha.

One of the biggest changes along this stretch is adding an additional inside lane to mitigate congestion. TxDOT said there will be three 12-ft.-wide lanes going east and west, along with a 10-ft.-wide inside and outside shoulder once the project is complete.

The contractor began the construction between Vinton and Redd Road first. 

TxDOT recently began a $174 million project to widen Interstate 10 along west El Paso to state line. The job will be completed in three years.

Officials Announce West Seattle Bridge Could Reopen By Fall SEATTLE (AP) The West Seattle Bridge could finally reopen this fall after it was abruptly closed in 2020, bringing relief to the residents of Seattle's southwest peninsula.

Elected officials vacillated between repairing and replacing the bridge. Initial estimates said retrofitting the bridge may add only 10 years to its lifespan.

But since the $175 million repair work began, crews now expect that the repairs will support the bridge for 30 years. 

How to Improve Construction Jobsite Metrics Via Wearables Wearables have become a very fashionable topic in the construction industry, but it’s not all window dressing. Every day wearables are promoting health, safety, connectivity, productivity and accuracy on construction sites.

Accessory for Every Occasion A number of employee monitoring systems have been introduced to the construction industry with the aim of making employees safer.

Dash cams are being installed into truck cabs — but not to record traffic — to record the activities of the driver. Truck companies want to make sure drivers are checking their mirrors and especially aren’t using their phones when behind the wheel.

The Spot-R fall alert and emergency evacuation system from Triax Technologies monitors employees’ movements to alert safety personnel if the device changes elevation quickly, indicating a fall. And it alerts workers of a emergency evacuation The Scan-Link RFID tags monitor employees’ locations and alerts equipment operators of employees who are located behind the machine.

Some smart watches detect vibration; that technology is used to monitor the ramifications to the body from using power equipment for a long time. Alerts tell the end-user when power tool use exceeds what the body can safety perform, and this is to prevent hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS).

Smart helmets monitor several health elements, such as fatigue, heart rate and stress, so workers and management can modify worker’s activities in ways that promote employee health and job site safety and productivity.

Turning Historical Data Into Predictive Analytics A lot of times, this monitoring can lead to policy changes and coaching opportunities.

“One customer who uses our Scan-Link RFID technology reported to me the following story,” said Jonathan Fava, president, Scan-Link Technologies, a ConExpoCon/AGG exhibitor. “We were looking at the number of times equipment operators were alerted to the presence of a nearby worker, and we noticed one person was causing a lot of alerts, so we pulled that individual aside and asked him why. He explained that he’s the flagger so, when operators load the machine onto a float, he gets up on the float to aid the operator place the machine. We advised him that behavior is unsafe; he could get struck by the machine or fall of the float. So, we told him a safer way to perform his job and wrote down new safety protocols into our guidelines and training.”

A number of employee monitoring systems have been introduced to the construction industry with the aim of making employees safer.

Using historical data to learn how things happen is the first step to promoting safety on the job site.

“It’s not enough just to learn how accidents have happened,” said Fava. “The next step is to analyze data in order to prevent accidents from happening.”

With all of the employee detections picked up by the Scan-Link system, managers can identify “hot spots” — spots where machines detect people the most frequently.

“Using this data, customers can identify areas where a struck-by incident is most likely to occur. Then, customers can make decisions that will decrease the risk of an accident from happening by moving the location of materials, so workers don’t have to walk in a machine’s workspace or by putting up signage warning employees of high-risk areas,” said Fava.

Assisted Reality Connects Two Physical Worlds Wearables also are instrumental in merging realities, which is bringing connectivity, productivity and accuracy to job sites.

Exoskeleton and assisted reality headset manufacturer Real Wear just released the second version of its assisted reality headset, called the RealWear Navigator 500.

It is sleeker, lighter and is more ergonomic than the previous model (the HMT100) for all-day comfort yet is rugged and durable for use on construction sites and in industrial settings.

It features a modular design, a 48megapixel camera sensor with enhanced zoom capability, incredible low light performance, and is compatible with more than 200 optimized apps. A hot-swappable battery allows for continuous use the whole day.

“With the Navigator 500, we wanted to provide scale enterprise solutions as part of the digital transformation movement. Today, we see the acceleration of digital transformation on the future of work, especially since the pandemic,” said Andrew Chrostowski, chairman and CEO, RealWear Technologies. “Our device is hands free and keeps you present. You don’t want your head stuck in the meta verse when you’re working around heavy equipment.”

The device allows the user to take photo and video at six different zoom levels, as well as call someone. The device takes audio commands for all features; you say the words “take a picture” or “zoom” or “call Herald” and it does it, so you can keep your hands on what you’re doing.

With it, users can aid in remote inspections and diagnostics. By equipping someone at the job site with the Navigator 500, they can act as the eyes for inspectors and technicians, so inspections and troubleshooting equipment can be done remotely, saving time and travel costs.

Augmented Reality Expands By Becoming Handheld The Trimble XR10 with Microsoft HoloLens brings a different kind of connectivity and reality. The technology connects virtual reality to physical reality to provide mixed reality.

HoloLens users can see both the physical world and the virtual world; the digital image is overlaid onto the physical world.

This technology is especially handy to trades; now, they no longer need to look at paper designs for what they are installing and then try to map out where that is in the physical world by establishing a frame of

reference and taking out the measuring tape; they can simply see, for example, the virtual pipes and their detailed measurements, and install the pipes with high accuracy. They also can see what is being installed nearby, so they can identify potential complications.

Trimble, a featured exhibitor at ConExpoCon/AGG, recently expanded the potential for BIM (business information modeling) users to deploy augmented reality on the job site by introducing the Trimble Connect AR app, which is compatible with Trimble Connect. The app is downloaded to a phone or tablet and allows users an augmented reality experience by pushing BIM data to their phone and overlaying it onto images of the real world on the device’s screen.

“This eliminates what can be a costly financial barrier to some customers,” said Martin Holmgren, general manager of building field solutions at Trimble. “And users can interact with Trimble Connect AR users in the digital space. For example, I can leave a message in the digital space with my Trimble XR10 and someone with the Trimble Connect AR app on their phone can detect the message, even weeks later as they walk by the location where it was left and read it. This greatly enhances communications and streamlines workflows.”

Trimble expects people who don’t need to be fully hands-free, such as supervisors, managers, inspectors and building owners will use it to perform tasks, such as QA/QC, updating punch lists and measuring construction progress.

“The app allows for the incorporation of AR into workflows that don’t require the user to be hands-free, and we think our app will ultimately drive AR in a much wider range of adoption,” said Holmgren. 

Doosan Manufactures Its First DD100 Dozer for N.A. Market Hyundai Doosan Infracore (HDI) successfully shipped the first Doosan dozer model DD100, a 9-metric-ton dozer targeted at the North American market.

HDI also produced two additional pilot machines and shipped them to North America for various performance tests, sales, marketing and service training.

The mass production of the Doosan DD100 will begin in June 2022 and will launch in North America in the third quarter.

With the launch of the dozer, HDI hopes to create synergies with its existing excavator and wheel loader models.

“This is the next significant milestone in the development of the new Doosan dozers,” said Edward Song, CEO of Doosan Infracore North America. “Our North American dealers and their customers are eager for the arrival of the new Doosan dozers. We look forward to launching the new line of construction equipment later this year.”

This dozer model was the first to be produced through the collaboration of various departments at HDI, including development analysis, market research, competitive benchmarking, validation and pilot vehicle assembly. In addition, purchasing and quality teams investigated parts supply while pro-

duction teams completed the first production dozer model.

HDI als¬o has set plans for its 13-metricton dozer — the Doosan DD130 — and will be shipping a pilot machine later this year.

The company plans to start production, possibly as early as February 2023.

DD100 Dozer Features The new 122-hp DD100 dozer expands the lineup of durable, rugged Doosan construction equipment. This new machine delivers powerful pushing performance, fuel efficiency and all-day operator comfort. It’s built for the most demanding conditions and features a dual/single flange-type roller with several track guard options, according to the manufacturer.

Designed with operators in mind, the DD100 features the 8-in. Smart Touch display, giving operators complete control from a convenient, easy-to-read touch screen. It also offers enhanced visibility with minimized front pillars, maximum glass area and a standard rearview camera — plus LED lights and front, rear and side wiper blades.

The DD100 features a Doosan engine with convenient maintenance access points and does not require the use of a diesel particulate filter to meet current emission stan-

dards. Doosan DD100 owners can add the 3D Machine Guidance and 3D Machine Control features as an option for greater accuracy and ease of operation.

OSHA safety standards spell out the exact process for preventing injuries to crew members. There are many causes for these incidents, but Grant Law Office points to negligence as chief among them.

Lack of proper worker training contributes to that negligence. The law team said improper use of or malfunctioning tools and equipment; failure to properly secure tools or components and improper stacking of tools, equipment, supplies or materials contribute, as well.

Inadequately securing loads on a boom, hoist or crane; loads that are too heavy; failure to use safety devices designed to stop falling debris and objects; faulty parts or materials that break down or lead to structural collapse; and lack of posted warning signs can all be tied to accidents.

Exponentially Improving Conditions Legal experts say recognizing hazards and making simple changes in work processes as a result can improve conditions exponentially.

“For instance, the seemingly commonsense requirement to bolt new steel instead of welding it in pre-existing wood structures can significantly reduce the risk of costly and dangerous fires,” attorney Neill Flynn, The Plata Law Firm, told Structure magazine. “Whether made of steel, lead, cast iron or copper, pipes are invariably denser, heavier and capable of making short work of the human body.

“Required safety precautions, most notably hard hats, have significantly reduced the number of injuries caused by construction workers coming into unintended contact with metal pipes.”

Unfortunately, these materials are still the source of a “significant” percentage of workplace accidents, he noted.

So do incidents related to working around pipes. Due to their weight and “unyielding nature,” Flynn said pipes are inherently dangerous whether they fall on an unsuspecting worker or cause an impact injury from improper storage.

“Something as simple as an unevenly stacked rebar can easily cut a worker or cause one to trip and fall,” he said. “Given the nature of construction sites, where almost everything is sharp, hard and/or heavy, what might otherwise be a benign occurrence can quickly become a career or an even life-ending event.”

Electrical wiring and other dangerous materials such as conduit and fixtures, invariably found on construction sites, can be hazards.

The most obvious source of injury from such materials is the risk of electrical shock,

said Flynn.

He added while it’s most closely associated with injuries to electricians, a significant number of electrical injuries are sustained by construction workers in every trade.

Wiring by its very nature creates a high risk of trip and fall injuries stemming from entanglements in loosely or otherwise improperly stored materials, he said.

Flammable materials pose an inherent danger on the construction site. Solvents, liquid petroleum gas and adhesives pose multiple risks ranging from flammability and combustion to inhalation dangers, said Flynn.

“As the general public has become inured over the last two years to wear masks due to the COVID pandemic, construction workers and especially safety officers have long been aware of proper breathing protection procedures.”

Such materials must be stored and used in adequately ventilated spaces, he continued.

“Fire or even explosions are the most obvious risk associated with combustible and/or flammable substances. However, they pose additional risks that are often overlooked.”

Simple skin contact with these materials can cause injury, said Flynn. They’re often more dangerous when inhaled due to the lack of or failure to use proper respiratory protection.

“Damage to the lungs and respiratory system overall can range from immediate to long-term and can, in many cases, be fatal.”

Foot injuries are a very common occurrence on construction sites, especially from falling objects. But there are many other causes and types of injuries.

Rhoades Legal notes that in addition to electrical shock, workers can suffer broken bones, punctures, cuts and lacerations, burns and sprains all involving the feet and negligence.

The law firm noted that workers can be crushed or suffer broken foot bones due to falling objects, moving vehicles and being trapped or caught between objects.

Punctures of the sole of the foot are caused by loose nails, sharp metal or glass objects.

“Puncture wounds can easily get infected if not treated promptly. You can even get tetanus from a puncture injury,” according to the legal team.

Cuts and lacerations of the feet can be caused by chainsaws, rotary mowers and unguarded or improperly guarded heavy machinery.

Electrical shock is caused by static electricity, contact with sources of electricity, including exposed hot wiring or wiring that is not properly grounded.

Finally, sprains can happen in slip and fall accidents. A worker could slip and fall on scaffolding or from wearing improper footwear.

Maintaining Safe Work Sites Many local jurisdictions provide legal means to compensate injured workers, but both site owner and contractor can be proactive by integrating a mix of strictly enforced site safety practices, OSHA regulations and simple common sense, said Flynn.

“By collecting and monitoring information about the project, increasingly in realtime, structural engineers can anticipate problems before they reach the critical stage and can be managed before someone gets hurt.”

He urged frequent site inspections, regular safety meetings and rigorously enforced site safety standards supplemented with real-time data collection systems.

“Comprised of wireless onsite sensors coupled with data collection nodes, such systems streamline the structural engineer’s ability to monitor the entire building site and

anticipate problems before they arise,” said Flynn. “These systems can be customized to monitor material storage and the location and movement of workers throughout the site, thereby giving the engineer the ability to anticipate and prevent dangerous or even deadly accidents before they happen.”

What simple common-sense measures can be implemented on the job site? The list is long, but Rhoades refers to OSHA’s rules for preventing workplace injuries: • Workers must wear safety shoes when working in locations where there is a risk of slipping and falling or objects piercing the sole.

• Protective footwear must meet ANSI Z4 or have equivalent design requirements.

Impact and compression protection are provided by all ANSI-approved shoes.

“However, the level and sort of protection may not always be the same. Different footwear protects users in various ways.

Make sure to review the label of the footwear.”

Shoes or boots may need to have special electrical conductivity insulation or other non-conductive protective material in order to prevent electrical shock.

Chemical-resistant boots may be required to protect against caustic, reactive, toxic or corrosive substances during cleaning or surface preparation.

Slip-resistant shoes should always be worn in any type of construction or production facility environment, but especially if the worker will have to be in icy or rainy weather conditions.

Many construction work settings require boots with toe caps and puncture-proof soles. Non-slip soles, chemical-resistant materials, insulation or other protective features may be required in your profession.

“Ensure that the shoes are safe according to necessary safety standards.”

Grant Law Office noted the adoption of additional safety precautions to reduce the risk of injury specifically from falling objects on the construction site: • Always wear protective gear, such as helmets, goggles and hard-toe boots.

Avoid hazardous areas for falling materials.

• Never walk or stand under heavy equipment, such as a front loader, hoist or crane, particularly when it is carrying a load.

• Use the proper equipment for the job at hand. Never stack materials or objects too high. And inspect equipment and tools before using them.

• Never use improperly maintained or faulty equipment or tools; never exceed the lifting capacity of a hoist, crane or lift; and secure tools and equipment properly when working overhead.  CEG

Mazio SKID Paver Provides Jobsite Agility, Versatility The Mazio skid-steer-mounted SKID Paver is ideal for asphalt patching and paving of roads, pathways, bicycle tracks, parking lots, driveways and utility trenches.

With a 1.5 cu. yd. (1.4 cu m) hopper capacity, a paving width of up to 6.2 ft. (1.9 m) and a paving speed of 82 ft. (25 m) per minute, the SKID Paver can be installed on any type of ISO 24410 skid steer loader.

Kenworth Reaches Milestone 10,000th T680 Next Generation Kenworth recently delivered its 10,000th T680 Next Generation.

The milestone truck was presented to System Transport at the company’s 50th anniversary celebration in Spokane, Wash.

The T680 Next Generation equipped with a 76-in. mid-roof sleeper was built by the employees at the Kenworth assembly plant in Chillicothe, Ohio.

“This is a special moment for Kenworth and Kenworth Sales Company — Spokane as we deliver the 10,000th T680 Next Generation just 15 months after product launch to System Transport in celebration of its 50th anniversary. We thank System Transport — and all our T680 Next Gen customers — for their business,” said Hank Johnson, Kenworth general sales manager — West and medium duty.

Johnson and Doug Powell, Kenworth director of fleet management, presented a special plaque to the company’s management. Also representing Kenworth

was Brandon Singh (connected services marketing manager).

“It is an honor for System Transport to be selected to receive Kenworth’s 10,000th T680 Next Generation,” said Jim Williams, founder and chairman of TransSystem, the parent company of System Transport. “We have purchased Kenworth trucks from our Kenworth dealer in Spokane for more than 30 years and have ordered more than 60 T680 Next Gen trucks so far.”

System Transport hauls all types of flatbed freight, primarily throughout the West Coast to the Midwest. Last year, System Transport was selected to transport the 2021 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree from the Six Rivers National Forest in California to Washington, D.C. A team of its drivers used a T680 Next Gen 76-in. mid-roof sleeper to successfully complete the special 3,300-mi. haul.

Allison Partners With Mack to Expand Medium-Duty Portfolio Allison Transmission, a global manufacturer of medium- and heavy-duty fully automatic transmissions for commercial and defense vehicles, announced that Mack Trucks has expanded its product portfolio to offer Allison’s 3000 rugged duty series (RDS) transmission for the Mack Class 6 and Class 7 MD truck series.

The Allison 3000 RDS is now available to order on the Mack MD series.

In addition to the Allison 2500 highway series transmission, which is the standard transmission on Mack’s MD series, and the 2500 rugged duty series, which is optional, Mack is now offering a third transmission option on the MD series. Mack has added the Allison 3000 RDS option for heavier-duty applications that require increased power and vehicle weight ratings.

Mack’s MD series trucks with an Allison 3000 RDS will feature a 33,000 lb. gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), expanding the MD series addressable market to vocational customers in applications such as refuse, recycling, propane and construction.

The Allison 3000 Series also will enable Mack MD series customers to pull trailers up to a gross combined vehicle weight rating (GCVW) of 45,000 lbs. The 3000 RDS also provides customers with Allison’s live power take-off (PTO) feature, which delivers uninterrupted power for higher vehicle efficiency and improved ease of

operation.

Like Allison’s 2500 series transmission, the 3000 series will be paired with a Cummins B6.7 engine.

“Allison is proud to partner with Mack Trucks to provide our customers with a robust transmission option designed to deliver the optimum blend of power and performance that drivers demand, combined with the proven reliability and durability that our customers know and expect from our fully automatic transmissions,” said Rohan Barua, vice president, North America sales, global channel and aftermarket at Allison Transmission.

“The increased ratings enabled by our 3000 series transmission will increase the MD series addressable market by approximately 25,000 vehicles annually, expanding vehicle options for Mack’s customers and adding breadth of applications to the company’s medium-duty portfolio.”

The Mack MD series vehicles equipped with the Allison 3000 RDS transmission are expected to enter into production in July 2022. In the coming months, the transmissions installed in Mack MD series trucks also will include Allison’s new next generation electronic controls platform, featuring additional capabilities including advanced communications, functional safety and cybersecurity and over-the-air programming.

Battle Motors Picks T-Mobile to Connect New Software T-Mobile announced on May 9 that Battle Motors has selected the Un-carrier as the preferred provider of IoT connectivity and management for thousands of new Battle Motors battery electric trucks rolling off the Ohio-based production line. These trucks are getting smarter, due to Battle Motors’ all new factory installed RevolutionOS EV software, according to the company.

Like consumer automotive, the commercial truck industry is moving swiftly to embrace EV technology. RevolutionOS, powered by T-Mobile’s nationwide network, delivers actionable data and information to drivers and fleet managers that they can use to enhance efficiency, safety and security, according to T-Mobile.

As part of this long-term agreement, TMobile for Business will deliver 4G LTE connectivity to Battle Motors trucks for near real-time sharing of battery range and usage information; historic and near real-time location and trip data; timely preventative maintenance warnings; over-the-air software and firmware updates; and the truck’s full bill of materials, such as VIN-specific information, parts and manuals.

Goodfellow, Astec Make for Good Partners On New Plant Amid the Sonoran Desert, a plant is growing.

Recent upgrades to Buesing Corporation’s recycling plant in Chandler, Ariz., have doubled the company’s capacity to produce quality construction materials.

The general civil construction contractor is well known for its work on high profile jobs in the Phoenix area, but it has steadily built a significant recycling division that produces aggregate for its own projects while also marketing to the general construction industry. And they may be just getting started.

Working with the Materials Solutions division of Astec and its dealer, Goodfellow Corporation, Buesing replaced its existing hydraulic diesel-driven plant with a total electric plant, which went operational in June 2021, according to Kevin Somerville, vice president and general manager of recycling of Buesing Corp.

“We were on our third crushing plant,” Somerville said of his company’s facility on the east side of the Phoenix metro area. “For the last eight or nine years, we had set up a plant utilizing small portable equipment. We did fine with that, but our TPH [tons per hour] capability was limited. We’d crush here, then move the entire plant to a job site and then move back. To increase production, we needed to put together a system we could have for 15 years and was far more robust, more durable than what we had.”

Enter Goodfellow Corporation, North America’s largest dealer for Astec Industries’ line of material solutions equipment.

“We reached out to Goodfellow to help design a new plant, knowing that they would be a good partner for us,” Somerville said. “We knew that the Astec equipment [formerly KPI-JCI] would be high quality, durable equipment.”

Challenges The new plant would need to address several goals.

“Reducing downtime was a major consideration in designing the new plant,” said Ed Triplett, crushing superintendent of Buesing. “We wanted to stay away from downtime issues associated with a hydraulic diesel-driven plant.

We were experiencing frequent, expensive repairs to the existing plant.”

Increased production was, of course, also an important consideration. The existing plant could crush up to 300 tons of concrete per hour, according to Triplett, and that was not enough.

“We needed to crush more, and we also wanted a larger capacity screening unit with better throughput,” he said.

While increased production was essential, there were limitations on the physical size of the new plant due to the overall footprint of the site — just 7.7 acres. Space would be at a

premium.

Finally, in terms of a supplier, Somerville said, “we wanted local parts, local service and local support. This would be a healthy investment north of $2 million.”

Buesing knew that some customization would be required to meet its needs and an equipment vendor with engineering and fabrication capabilities was a must, he added.

Assessing Needs, Finding Solutions After identifying Goodfellow and Astec as the preferred partners for the project, the process of designing, manufacturing and installing the plant begin during the summer of 2020.

Mike Caldwell, Goodfellow’s representative assigned to Buesing, assembled a team that included Bill A.Royce, Astec’s Materials Solutions regional sales manager, and engineers from both Goodfellow and Astec. The team worked closely with Somerville and Triplett throughout the process to assess Buesing’s needs, identify solutions and produce the final product.

In May 2021, Buesing took delivery of two crushers that could work in tandem or individually, depending on the incoming materials and the desired end product.

The primary crusher would be the Astec CS3055 jaw crusher, featuring the Vanguard jaw and an industry leading 1 ½-in. stroke which can crush up to 36-in. material down to 4-to-6 in. From there, material would be fed to another Astec unit — this time their CS5260 horizontal impact crusher, featuring the Maximum Performance Rotor (MPR) featuring the only solid steel rotor in the industry with 2, 3 and 4

The CS3055 and CS5260 were built in Yankton, S.D. and the 8203-38LP screener was built in Eugene, Ore. “Both of these crushers are stand-alone primaries,” said Astec Materials Solutions Regional Sales Manager Bill A. Royce. “During the plant design and engineering process, we listened to their challenges and came up with the two primary system to increase production and lower wear costs with a jaw and impactor working in tandem. We further designed the plant to have two separate feed points for the inbound material streams of RCA/RAP. The two separate feed points gives them flexibility for maintenance when the jaw needs to be down, they can still run the impactor and build their RAP stockpiles.”

“This system has doubled our TBD at this site,” Somerville said. “We actually need to grow our inbound material now to get up to full production. We currently crush three days a week, so we have plenty of room to grow.”

On an hourly basis, Somerville and Triplett said they can now crush 450 tons of concrete and approximately 600 tons per hour when crushing asphalt.

The right equipment is essential, but both Goodfellow and Astec credited the Buesing team with their discipline of sorting and preprocessing the inbound material streams.

“They have RAP coming in,” Royce said. “They have concrete coming in. They have a man and a machine [excavator with a pulverizer] prepping materials right at intake.

That pre-processing just makes the crushing and screening process run more smoothly.”

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) saw a modest increase in net sales for Q1, 2022 in all areas outside of Asia — with its overall growth momentum impacted by the market decline in China, triggered in part by the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions there.

The ongoing pandemic in China has had a significant impact on sales in the construction equipment industry’s largest market in the world, leading to a drop of 9 percent in overall global sales for the first quarter of 2022. However, all other regions have played a strong role in softening the impact by demonstrating a steady increase in sales for the first three months of the year, with South America reporting the highest increase of 62 percent, North America rising 11 percent, Africa and Oceania 5 percent and Europe 2 percent.

Further illustrating the escalating importance of service solutions, service sales also have increased by 17 percent.

During Q1 2022, Volvo CE saw net sales decrease to SEK 22,613 M from SEK 24,742 M in Q1, 2021. Adjusted operating income amounted to SEK 2,810 M (SEK 3,822 M in Q1, 2021), corresponding to an adjusted operating margin of 12.4 percent, down from 15.4 percent. The operating income has been negatively affected by lower machine volumes and higher material costs, which were partially mitigated by improved price realization and higher service volumes.

The elevated levels of order intake from the same period last year as the world recovered somewhat from the impact of the pandemic, has meant there has been a drop in order intake for Q1, 2022 — declining by 42 percent.

While mainly due to the continued decline in China, order intake also has felt the effect of a cancellation of orders in Russia and restrictive order slotting due to large order books.

Effects from a strained supply chain also have led to deliveries decreasing by 33 percent.

Market Development The European market grew by 13 percent in the first two months of the year, influenced by a large number of investments in infrastructure and housing, while North America increased by 20 percent due to the high levels of housing construction and manufacturing in the region.

Due to the strong demand for commodities, South America has continued its robust rise in market demand with a 45 percent increase on the same quarter last year. Getting Up to Speed “It’s easy to build a plant on paper, but when you start crushing, it is reality and there is always further customization that is needed,” Somerville said of the start-up period.

“Goodfellow was very responsive during setup,” Triplett said. “When issues arose, they would get with Astec and, between the two, it was taken care of. They were very responsive, even to unanticipated design changes that we asked for.”

Custom fabrication is something Goodfellow both prides itself on and specializes in.

“We are sort of a hybrid between an equipment distributor and a manufacturer,” Caldwell said of his company. “We can start with Astec machines and get very creative with the final product. Additionally, whatever we build here locally limits freight exposure for our customers.”

By October, the plant was operating at 90 percent of full capacity and Somerville said that’s where they wanted to be.

“Ninety percent is on the safe, conservative side,” he said.

“At 100 percent, you can start to get some hang-ups.”

He added that they can typically run for 7.4 hours of an 8hour day, shutting down just long enough for routine lubrication.

Somerville said that Triplett and his team do 98 percent of the necessary maintenance.

“There are 28 motors on the system and over one mile of cable, not to mention a dust suppression system at every transfer point as well as inside the crusher,” he said. “So, maintenance is a must, but mostly routine.”

Meeting Customer Standards Public works construction projects in the Phoenix area, including aggregate specifications, are regulated by the Maricopa Association of Governments. Buesing currently is producing three different blends of concrete and asphalt that meet MAG standards, depending on the end use, from 100 percent crushed asphalt used on lay down yards and access roadways to an asphalt-concrete blend for roadways.

Meeting those standards allows Buesing to sell to ADOT (Arizona Department of Transportation), municipalities throughout the region, airports, landfills, multi-family housing projects, solar installations and other projects.

On the incoming side of things, Somerville said his plant is a great alternative to landfills for contractors needing to dispose of construction waste.

“We are much more competitive than a traditional landfill,” he said. “Contractors who in the past were paying by the ton to drop at a landfill can now bring debris here for less — and oh by the way, it’s a recycling yard and they can and should feel good about that.”

Pioneer in Recycling Buesing began recycling construction materials back in 1996 — before it was commonplace for contractors to do their own crushing and screening — on a small site in downtown Phoenix. By 1999, the company had outgrown that space and relocated the operation to its current Chandler location.

Founder Jerry Buesing saw the potential savings in transportation costs that could be realized by processing materials on the jobsite as well as at his own central processing plant.
