Austin’s$4BCAPProjectReshapesHighway

Fluor Corporation began work on the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) $548 million I-35 Capital Express South project, which is part of the multi-billion dollar I-35 Capital Express program taking place in Austin.

The work began last November and is expected to be completed in late 2028. Construction is funded by the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) and TxDOT.

TxDOT is investing more than $4 billion for its I-35 Capital Express Program (CAP) in Austin, an initiative that has been divided into three segments: North, Central and South.

“It is always gratifying to [work] on a new project that will provide relief from traffic congestion and improve mobility and safety,” said Thomas Nilsson, president of Fluor’s infrastructure business. “This project reinforces Fluor’s commitment to deliver quality infrastructure and supports economic development and commerce in Texas. This is the first in a series of vital infrastructure projects to rebuild the I-35 corridor in response to business and population expansion in Austin, one of the country’s fastest growing regions.”

Putting Spotlight OnApprenticeships

Programs Changing Career Direction for Many Who Once Considered College

A convergence of factors may mean a boost for construction employers trying desperately to fill jobs. The cost of a college education and a rewrite of the National Apprenticeship Act are giving a boost to the industry’s labor pool. As many people choose to forego four years of college to start work, apprenticeship programs are becoming a more enticing route to construction careers.

Demand for workers, rising cost of college tuition and burdensome student loans, have apprenticeship programs “quietly gaining steam,” according to a CNBC report.

DozensofIndustryLeadersEngageinARTBALeadershipProgram

Three dozen emerging leaders in the transportation design and construction industry completed an intensive introduction to federal legislative and regulatory issues May 15 to 17 during the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) Foundation’s Industry Leader Development Program (ILDP).

The annual event, held in conjunction with ARTBA’s Federal Issues Program and the Transportation Construction Coalition (TCC) Fly-In, also featured policy discussions with congressional staff and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) officials.

More than 800 graduates from over 200 industry firms and public agencies have completed the ILDP since 1996. HNTB, one of the world’s leading infrastructure firms, is the program’s exclusive sponsor.

The ILDP provides participants with a solid understanding of industry economics, how transportation work in the United States is funded and financed, how actions by the federal government impact the industry and how they — and their company or agency — can become politically engaged.

The three-day event included a session on implementation of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and mentoring and career development sessions led by ARTBA Chair Paula Hammond, senior vice presi-

dent, WSP USA and ARTBA Senior Vice Chair Tim Duit, president, Duit Holdings.

BerlonIndustriesOffersWideVarietyofUniqueAttachments

Berlon Industries, a manufacturer and distributor of a variety of attachments, is on a mission to provide high-quality attachments by partnering with dealers and retailers and gathering input from customers. The company, headquartered in Hustisford, Wis., offers buckets, augers, trenchers, grapples and other tools for skid steers, mini-skid steers, tractor loaders, compact utility tractors, wheel loaders and telehandlers.

History

Berlon began creating attachments for

skid steers in 1995 by Lon Berndt. In 2012, Berlon was sold to Blackthorne Partners, the company’s current managing director. In 2020, Randy Schickert, current president and CEO, purchased a stake in the company and joined the board of directors.

In January 2022, Berlon purchased Lowe Manufacturing of Viola, Wis., maker of attachments for fencing, construction, landscaping, rental, contracting, utility and agricultural applications. Lowe was founded in 1971. Richard and Mary Lowe ran the business for the past 42 years. Richard retired after the sale and Mary remained with the business until February 2023, to help with the transition.

“We set out a new course of growth and we’ve doubled the size of Berlon Industries in the last three years,” said Schickert. “We have done well on the growth side. After the acquisition of Lowe, we doubled Berlon again. We are now four times the size we were just a little more than three years ago.”

Post acquisition, all sales and marketing were combined into one team led by Diane Salzman, director of sales. Today, there are approximately 80 employees — 60 in the shops and 20 office and management staff — combined in both locations.

Product Lineup

Salzman has been with the company for

17 years. She has seen the company’s product line evolve. She said walk-behind skid steers have become increasingly popular — and so have the attachments for these machines.

“Our array of products in that industry has been good for our growth strategy,” she said.

Berlon has a product range that includes buckets, grapples, mini-products, pallet fork frames, bale spear carriages, log splitters, land planes, trailer movers and bale handlers.

“One of our unique products in the industry is our material long bucket,” said Salzman. “It is used at quarries to clean

U.S. Greenlights Transmission Line for Renewable Energy

The U.S. government is greenlighting a proposed multibillion-dollar transmission line that would send primarily wind-generated electricity from the rural plains of New Mexico to big cities in the West.

The Interior Department announced its record of decision for the SunZia project recently. It comes approximately a year after an environmental review was completed as part of a broader effort by the Biden administration to clear the way for major transmission projects as it looks to meet climate goals and shore up the nation's power grid.

The SunZia transmission project in New Mexico has been more than a decade in the making. The U.S. Defense Department and others initially raised concerns about the path of the high-voltage lines, prompting the developer to submit a new application in 2021 to modify the route.

New Mexico's renewable energy authority is among those invested in the SunZia project, which would include roughly 520 mi. of transmission lines and a network of substations for getting wind and solar power toArizona and California.

The anchor tenant is California-based Pattern Energy, which has been busy building massive wind farms in central New

Mexico.

Federal land managers said they completed the latest review in less than two years.

“The Department of the Interior is committed to expanding clean energy development to address climate change, enhance America’s energy security and provide for good-paying union jobs,” Laura Daniel-

Davis, principal deputy assistant secretary of land and minerals management, said in a statement.

The Bureau of Land Management has approved nearly three dozen renewable energy and grid improvement projects since 2021. Included are solar and geothermal projects that officials said would be capable

of producing enough electricity to power more than 2.6 million homes.

More than 150 applications for solar and wind development are still in the agency’s queue, official said.

Land managers also are reviewing two other major transmission projects that would funnel electricity generated from renewable sourcesinremotespotstolargewesternmarkets. One would run through seven counties from Las Vegas to Reno, Nevada, and the other would stretch between central Utah and east-central Nevada.

Pattern Energy announced recently that it signed long-term purchase agreements with Shell Energy North America and the University of California for a portion of the electricity that will be flowing through SunZia.

Construction is expected to start later this year. It will be about three years until the line begins delivering power, the company said.

Pattern CEO Hunter Armistead has said SunZia will be able to tap “some of the best wind in the world.”

He explained that the wind farms in New Mexico have a wind generation profile with an evening peak that will complement daytime solar generation elsewhere. 

WackerNeusonMarksCompany’s175th Anniversary With Global Celebration

Technology allowed more than 6,000 employees to celebrate together, marking this milestone through a global call hosted by the company’s headquarters in Munich, Germany. The live event traveled around the world with stops in various factories and sales affiliates.

Wacker Neuson employees around the world paused on May 15, 2023, to commemorate the company’s 175th anniversary.

Today’s technology allowed more than 6,000 employees to celebrate together, marking this milestone through a global call hosted by the company’s headquarters in Munich, Germany. The live event traveled around the world with stops in various factories and sales affiliates.

“Taking the time to celebrate 175 years of quality and innovation reflects the commitment of our company to the many dedicated Wacker Neuson employees who have contributed to our global success throughout our history and those that are now leading us into a bright future,” said Gert Reichetseder, president and CEO, Wacker Neuson America Corporation.

“We originated the compaction industry and that will always be at the heart of Wacker Neuson, even as we grow our product offering into exciting new areas.”

Original

The foundation for Wacker Neuson’s success story was laid by Johann Christian Wacker in 1848, when he set up a blacksmith shop in Dresden, Germany. Since then, the company has introduced many innovations that have revolutionized work on the construction sites worldwide.

In 1930, Hermann Wacker set new standards in the industry with the original, innovative electric rammer. The vibratory rammers are used for soil compaction to this day.

This was followed by the development of the internal vibrator for concrete consolidation, which captured the market in 1934 and the first reversible plate which set a milestone in soil compaction.

AEM’sCelebration of Construction

Innovation

Over the years, Wacker Neuson has continued to enhance its original products and has been responsible for many pioneering innovations that have made the construction process more efficient, faster and comfortable for the operator.

In 2014, Wacker Neuson introduced a new skid steer and compact track loader line to the NorthAmerican market. The entirely new design redefined service access and operator comfort. More recently, the dual view dumper changed the view of site material handling.

The dumper’s 180-degree rotating seat and control panel allow the operator to always keep the task in the front of the machine, enhancing safety and efficiency.

Future

Always looking forward, Wacker Neuson has introduced an extensive line of battery-powered, zero-emission compaction and concrete consolidation products that are powered by the Battery One modular battery system. The large selection of eco-friendly, battery-powered products includes the new and industry’s first battery-powered reversible plate, the APU3050e.

Future introductions in North America will include the EZ17e zero-emission mini excavator, as well as batterypowered wheel loaders, dumpers and telehandlers.

While Wacker Neuson is often known as the original “rammer company,” it goes well beyond the single product mentality. The company is now defined as a leading manufacturer of high quality light and compact equipment used in construction, landscape, agriculture, utility, residential, municipal and industrial markets. The company’s long tradition of countless innovations has changed the way customers work, build and transport goods all over the world. 

TheAssociation of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) and more than 40 member companies and industry partners hosted a Celebration of Construction on the National Mall.

The industry showcased the latest innovations, including electric and hydrogen powered construction equipment, recyclable materials and waste reduction opportunities, and the technology to sustainably build the modern infrastructure that America needs.

The three-day festival brought more than 24,000 visitors

to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., including top administration officials, lawmakers, regulators and the general public, for a first-hand look at the advancements in construction equipment and practices. Seventy-five machines, hands-on displays and demonstrations brought the industry to life on the nation’s doorstep.

“This event highlights the incredible innovations taking place in the construction equipment sector and we are grateful to our member companies and industry partners for uniting to tell our story,” said Megan Tanel, president of AEM. “We are thrilled to showcase the construction industry in our nation’s capital.”

U.S. Secretary of Energy, Jennifer Granholm, senior adviser to President Biden, Mitch Landrieu, Deputy Secretary of Commerce, Don Graves, Deputy Secretary of Energy, Dr. Geri Richmond, 22 Members of Congress and 15 officials with the administration and federal agencies toured the festival and discussed the policy priorities of the construction equipment industry.

DoosanAdds Next-Generation -7 Series Wheel Excavators

Doosan Infracore North Americaintroduceditsnext-generation -7 Series wheel excavators: the Doosan DX140W-7, DX190W-7 and DX210W-7.

Each machine is equipped with a balance of power and fuel efficiency to keep operators working productively.The“dash7”excavators replace the “dash 5” models in the Doosan excavator lineup.

Designed for demanding tasks, the three new Doosan -7 Series wheel excavators deliver powerful digging and maneuverability when working on bridges and roadways or in urban areas. Each machine is equipped with a balance of power and fuel efficiency, along with best-in-class comfort features, intelligent controls and smart machine functionality, to help operators take on their toughest jobsite challenges, the manufacturer said.

“Each day comes with unexpected challenges, so it’s critical thatDoosanexcavatorsareequipped withmachinefeaturesthathelpour customers take on whatever comes their way,” said Joel Escalante, senior product specialist.

“With our new wheel excavators, customerscanachievepowerful digging and more maneuverability, all while reducing fuel consumption. We’ve also enhanced the excavator cab with additional comfort features and now offer an all-around view monitor camera system for even better visibility of the job site.”

Powerful Digging, Maneuverability

Equipped with superior hydraulics, the redesigned wheel excavators deliver the powerful digging force needed to move and lift more material with each cycle. A one-touch power boost feature can be enabled to help amplify hydraulic power for digging in tough material.

The new -7 Series wheel excavators have a modular design that allows owners to easily configure the machine’s undercarriage to level, backfill material with the front dozer blade or stabilize the machine when digging. Owners can choose from four independent outriggers or a front dozer blade and independent rear outriggers.

Doosan wheel excavators are

often used in highway and street development, building, manufacturingoperations, sitedevelopment and land improvement. For example, a wheel excavator customer can drive on the shoulder of a road to dig in an adjacent ditch or use a bucket with a hydraulic thumb or tiltrotator to pick up materials and load them into a truck for disposal.

Maximize Productivity, Fuel Consumption With Smart Technologies

The redesigned wheel excavators feature smart technologies such as Smart Power Control (SPC) to improve machine efficiency while maintaining productivity through variable speed control and pump torque control. Each of the four power modes will function with SPC engaged or disengaged; however, SPC is only active in the digging work mode.

Four work modes, auto idle, auto shutoff and machine diagnostics help wheel excavator owners manage their fuel costs. In addition, each machine is equipped with engine auto shutdown to save fuel and help lower warranty hours.

ImprovedComfortVisibility,

The redesigned Doosan wheel excavator models are built for allday operator comfort with features to reduce noise and vibration. The cab offers more floor space, automotive-style heating and air conditioning and excellent visibility through the front, rear and overhead windows.

Inside the cab is an optional deluxe air-suspension seat that is heated and cooled, ergonomically designed joystick controls and a new user-friendly, 8-in. Smart Touch screen.

The multilingual Doosan Smart Touch screen, standard on -7 Series excavators, displays important settings and information on one screen. From the easy-to-read touch screen, operators can monitor critical machine functions and control machine settings, rearview camera, heating and cooling, radio andBluetoothwirelesstechnology.

All-Around View Monitoring (AVM) System

The optional 360-degree all-

around view monitoring (AVM) camera system displays a full view of the machine’s surroundings, giving operators greater confidence when operating or positioning the machine in tight work areas. Five unique visual perspectives can be seen from the separate AVM monitor: top view, rear view, top+right view, rear+corner view and 3D view.

TheAVMcamerasystemcanbe linked with optional ultrasonic detection sensors for an additional level of awareness of objects behind the machine.

Bipartisan Group Introduces NationalApprenticeshipAct

APPRENTICESHIPS from page 1

“People at the margin are saying ‘I don’t know if I can wait four years to make a living,’” said Hafeez Lakhani, president of Lakhani Coaching in New York.

European Model

The apprenticeship tradition of combining on-the-job, paid training with classroom instruction has its roots in European history.

In Germany alone, more than half of all high school graduates participate in an apprenticeship program. Yet it’s been slow to catch fire in the United States, according to a National Student Clearinghouse report.

The DOLfigures more than 581,000 people were in a registered apprenticeship program this year. That’s a 103 percent increase over the decade. However, 12 million people are enrolled at a four-year school today, according to a Captimes news organization article.

David Boetcher of IBEW 159 in Madison, Wis., said the idea of pursuing a college education is ingrained in American high school graduates.

Meanwhile, lucrative jobs requiring shorter, less expensive training go unfilled. But the tide may be turning, he told Captimes.

“People are seeing that a college degree, while being asked for by every employer, isn’t as necessary, and it’s gotten horrifyingly expensive.”

“Apprenticeship helps to get people into workspaces with very succinct training,” said David Polk, Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development.

That model of programmatic training “encompasses the job learning and classroom learning to take a person from novice to skilled,” he said in the Captimes article.

“Employers are hungry for young talent and new talent, and they are just more open to going down the path of apprenticeship models in the skilled trades.”

Over the past 50 years, “there’s been a shift away from the occupations that people do [in] this narrow focus of college,” said Pete Stern, Madison ironworkers union.

“It’s great to be a pharmacist, doctor, lawyer, accountant,

but they have to have buildings to do them, and people are starting to realize that,” he said.

Funding Where It Counts

As a result, the push to shed a brighter light on the benefits of apprenticeships is gaining support at both the state and federal level.

InApril, a bipartisan group of House education and workforce committee members introduced the National Apprenticeship Act of 2023. Creating near one million registered, youth and pre- apprenticeship opportunities over five years, it earmarks almost $4 million for the cause.

“The Registered Apprenticeship system is one of the best tools we have to connect workers with in-demand skills with good-paying jobs,” said committee ranking member Bobby Scott of Virginia.

At the same time, the system provides employers with a pipeline of talented workers, he added.

“The National Apprenticeship Act of 2023 is a clear winwin for workers and employers, and it will help grow the economy.”

The proposed legislation authorizes $400 million in funding for fiscal year 2025, increasing by $100 million annually to $800 million for FY 2029.

The Act codifies and streamlines standards for registered, youth and pre-apprenticeship programs. That includes requirements for apprenticeship agreements and program registration to ensure consistency in quality standards and worker protections. It codifies existing regulations and practices to ensure that all individuals have an equal opportunity to participate in programs under the national system.

It also works to increase diversity in the occupations offered and the individuals participating in programs. It codifies the DOL’s Office of Apprenticeship as well as the responsibilities of the State Apprenticeship Agencies.

The agreement supports the creation and expansion of youth apprenticeships, college consortiums and data sharing agreements.

Last fall, President Biden launched the Apprenticeship Ambassador Initiative, a network of businesses and organi-

zations supporting registered apprenticeship. The more than 200 businesses and organizations have existing registered apprenticeship programs in more than 40 industries.

They have committed to expand and diversify these programs over the next year, according to the Biden administration. They will develop 460 new programs, hire more than 10,000 new apprentices and hold 5,000 outreach, promotional and training events.

The goal is to help other business, labor and education leaders launch similar programs.

“Ambassadors will also use their expertise to scale innovative practices and increase access to registered apprenticeship for underserved populations,” said President Biden.

The administration touts the program as a high-quality, debt-free equitable “earn and learn” model with a nationally recognized credential system. They maintain the program “helps employers hire a more diverse workforce.”

Improved Employee Retention

The program also provides workers with on-the-job learning experience, job-related instruction with a mentor and a clear pathway to a good-paying job. It builds on Biden’s efforts to expand registered apprenticeships, including investing hundreds of millions of dollars in them.

The initiative aims to launch an apprenticeship accelerator to speed new program approval from months to days.

Open Campus reports that apprenticeships are becoming the darling of labor. “Everybody wants to do it,” said Mary Alice McCarthy of New America.

The big question said McCarthy, senior director of New America’s center on education and labor at New America, is “Where do you put the money?”

One solution floated is to channel more public support for “apprenticeship intermediaries” to help set up and run the programs.

Nonprofit group Apprenticeships for America said nonprofits, for-profits or public institutions are potential candidates.

Intermediaries are “going to be able to recruit the appren-

Dealers Can Turn F&I Into Profit Center

Finance & insurance (F&I) are a critical source of revenue in auto and other industries. Brett Davis, president of the construction and agriculture division with Trnsact, thinks it should be a significant revenue stream for commercial trucking and equipment dealers too.

In the second part of its Q&A series, Trnsact dives further into the F&I opportunity with Davis, who has a lengthy career working with equipment dealers and helping them grow and increase profitability.

During his 25-year tenure at CNH Industrial, Davis served as a president and chairman of CNH Industrial Capital, president of CNH Latin America Financial Services, vice president of New Holland NorthAmerica and president of Banco CNH Industrial Capital in Brazil.

In his time there, he was often struck by the commitment of equipment dealers to their customers. However, he also was struck by the missed opportunity to maximize revenue streams through a more formal F&I department that adds points to financing and taking advantage of selling insurance, gap insurance, extended warranties, and other valuable aftermarket products.

In part 1 of the conversation, Davis discussed how the opportunity can drive revenue for dealers. In part 2, he explores how a dealership can adjust its mindset to take advantage of this new revenue stream.

Moderator: So obviously we see finance and insurance in other industries, but describe the state of F&I within equipment and commercial trucking.

Davis: So in terms of the products — the straight financing from the lenders and the insurance providers, the warranty providers, etc. — they’re out there. They exist.

There are several big companies that have really been very dominant in the space, while there’s quite a few lenders, and there are some captive lenders. Also, there are some whitelabel lenders where an OEM will engage with several funding sources and offer them as a preferred funding source to their dealers and their customers. So there’s a bunch of different options [in the marketplace].

There are also companies offering the full gamut of physical damage insurance out there. That’s pretty well evolved [in the marketplace]. In the maintenance and the warranty plans, [it is] a little less … but still pretty well developed.

What I have seen [in the equipment industry] compared to other industries is that — what they call in insurance “the attachment rate” — is actually pretty low. This means that for some reason, compared to other industries, the percentage of deals that either have an extended warranty or maintenance plan, or physical damage insurance is very low. [This] obviously means we have a large amount of untapped revenue and opportunity for dealers.

So we are trying to explore that: Why is that attachment rate low when we know everything is financed has to be or 90 percent of all equipment is going to be financed in some form? Why aren’t the other products being readily attached as part of the sales process? I think fundamentally what we’ve had is probably a loose configuration of systems and providers, which are not well organized to be able to provide something that simple and easy [for dealers] to use at the

point of sale.

Unlike some other similar businesses, [equipment dealers] don’t have a true F&I department. The salesperson often is responsible for not only securing the sale of the whole good but the financing insurance and everything else and I think after the financing is done it typically stops there and the work is done by the salesperson and completed and really doesn’t follow through on the physical damage insurance or any of the other potential products could add value to the customer and to the dealership.

I think that’s the unique challenge a lot of it is probably based on just the inability to get [execute F&I] all done in one place. They have to toggle to multiple systems to enter more information multiple times. It’s a burdensome process, and we often have the salesperson [selling products but] not they don’t appreciate those products. They have not seen the added value in their time to go ahead and make those things part of the sales process and they just close it after the financing [is finalized].

Moderator: Just getting a deal closed is often a priority for every sales rep, as well as for there for their equipment dealer and for their truck dealership. So can you discuss maybe how [the sales process] would change? Financing itself could be back and forth, so maybe we could cover [what it means to also sell additional products].

Davis: It’s a challenge depending on the industry you’re in and the type of equipment you are selling. There are certainly going to be challenged.

I mean, there are funding resources readily available fortunately for the industry, but it’s not always easy. It’s just using one lender sometimes. Other times you have a portfolio where you’ll have a primary lender, then a couple of sublenders that have a specialty or a niche that they can fill when your primary lender can’t. So a lot of times you have to work with multiple lenders.

I’d say on average most dealerships regularly work with three to five lenders and one or two primary lenders. That all depends on what their major lines are as well. But that’s just a general comment from my research that tells me three to five lenders is sort of The Sweet Spot for most lenders out there to that most dealers today.

And then, you know again the ability to earn from the finance and sources is clearly an opportunity for the dealership and then also the whole array of the other products and it comes in two-fold, you make direct commissions from the product itself, whether that’s physical damage extended warranty maintenance plans, but beyond that is often though. There is definitely a tie back to absorption meaning how much more parts and service revenue.

Can you generate if you have your customers buying new or used equipment and driving them back to the dealership making sure that they’re getting all the services at your dealership is definitely going to help drive your absorption up? Unfortunately, I’ve seen in many cases, you know, people are dealers are satisfied with absorption in the 70-percent range, plus or minus. I think a lot of the averages that I had seen over the years.

Apprenticeships Gaining Momentum Across Industry

APPRENTICESHIPS from page 24

tices, the employers and stitch it all together,” McCarthy told Open Campus.

Jennifer Carlson of career service Apprenti describes the group as a consortium of 80 apprenticeship-delivery organizations across industries. She said apprenticeship training “allows for people with nontraditional work skills to find an alternate pathway into high-demand, high-wage roles.”

Trident Technical College, a two-year institution located in South Carolina, is one intermediary currently in partnership with local K-12 schools.

Employers are invested, said Melissa Stowasser, assistant vice president of community partnerships at the college.

“The employers have skin in the game” and are paying the salaries and providing mentors to apprentices, she said. “They are committed.”

For Tom Howard, owner of Lee’sAir in Madison, Wis., the program was meant to address a growing labor shortage.

“The reality is, as air-conditioning and plumbing companies, we are desperate for labor,” he said. “It’s a massive problem.”

Lee’s covers the cost of training and supplies and matches apprentices with full-time jobs at the company. Once workers complete the program, “we have a pretty high retention rate,” he said.

But these days, apprenticeships are becoming more mainstream across the industry, Howard added.

“Companies that have these programs have a huge advantage because we can create the labor.”

It’s all a win-win for the employer and the apprentice, said Polk of the Wisconsin DWD. Employers ensure they have a

skilled, productive workforce, and apprentices get paid for onthe-job training that advances them into the professional world.

Biden maintains his initiative will have long-lasting and economic benefits. But not everyone in the construction industry agrees.

One-Sided Approach

The Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) organization is vocal about its objections to the narrow focus of Biden’s initiative.

The association said it would take 12 years for governmentregistered apprenticeship programs (GRAP) to make a dent the more than half a million worker void the industry needs to fill right now.

Instead, ABC has gotten behind other workforce legislation, including Training America’s Workforce and the Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce

ABC estimates that the industry’s GRAP system yielded just 45,000 workers who completed four- to five-year apprenticeship programs last year.

“Construction ofAmerican infrastructure, funded by robust investments will be delayed, subject to added costs or not built at all,” said Ben Brubeck, ABC vice president of regulatory, labor and state affairs.

That’s unless lawmakers champion all-of-the-above workforce development policies for the construction industry, he said.

“Unfortunately, the Biden administration and some in Congress are pushing policies exclusively promoting GRAP to build the construction workforce.”

This benefits special interests, said Brubeck, because 75

percent of all GRAP enrollees are affiliated with union programs.

“Yet, the government’s own data demonstrates that the restrictive GRAP system is not meeting the industry’s need for skilled labor,” he added.

It “therefore cannot be the only solution supported by government to meet market demand and develop a diverse and inclusive workforce.”

A May DOL listening session on the National Apprenticeship System rewrite “could result in new restrictive policies favoring special interests at the expense of the broader construction industry,” said Brubeck.

ABC said the national apprenticeship act “further entrenches” the “rigid” system and fails to address workforce needs of the nation’s construction industry.

It also “substantially restricts apprenticeship opportunities currently serving thousands of contractors, the association maintains,” said the association.

“ABC’s 68 chapters are educating craft, safety and management professionals using innovative and flexible learning models.”

That’s in addition to more than 300 GRAPs across more than 20 different occupations with a goal to develop a safe, skilled and productive workforce.

“ABC member companies administer GRAPs independent of ABC’s network,” said Brubeck.

Members invested an estimated $1.6 billion in construction industry workforce development in 2021, he added.

“GRAPs are one of many solutions that are part of ABC’s all-of-the-above solution to workforce development,” said Brubeck.  CEG

John Deere Reveals Its Construction PortfolioAdditions

John Deere is continuing the performance tiering journey that began in 2020 and chose ConExpo-Con/AGG 2023 as the world stage to introduce new models and technology features that provide differentiated value for its customers.

As a company that prioritizes thegrowthandimprovementofthe construction industry, the booth will be organized by category, featuring complimentary equipment grouped by the work that customers perform. John Deere will unveil new models in the small dozer, large scraper, compact track loader, skid steer loader and cold planing attachment line-ups.

“At this year’s ConExpoCon/AGG show, we are thrilled to debut equipment in a variety of product categories, helping expand offerings for customers seeking a smarter, more efficient job site,” said Ryan Campbell, president, Construction & Forestry Division and Power Systems, John Deere.

“What better place to launch thesenewmachinesthanfirst-hand with the customers and operators they were intended for.”

Designed for customers looking to level up on the job site, the new P-Tier small dozer models offer precise hydraulics and smooth stability during operation. Featuring the entry level solution EZ Grade in base models with EH controls, as well as optional slope control and 2D laser capabilities, the 450, 550, and 650 P-Tier machines are technology-packed, offering

smarter, more intuitive operations. All models are compatible with laser receivers, helping to control elevation and slope while utilizing a rotating laser.

The P-Tier small dozers with EH controls arrive from the factory with EZ Grade features, however, the owner can upgrade to Slope Control or SmartGrade technology in the future, if desired. As an additional tech-forward feature, the new 8-in. touchscreen cab display offers intuitive navigation of slope control and machine settings on EH machines.

Enhancing operator performance and safety, the new P-Tier small dozers feature a variety of strategic design choices aimed to increase visibility and comfort. Boasting a 14 percent larger cab than previous models, the P-Tier machines offer increased storage space and easier ingress/egress capabilities. In addition, customers can now proportionally control the blade’s angle and change travel direction through the use of the integrated FNR switch.

Impacting operator visibility, the new hood design, straightened and lowered 5-in. on 650 P-Tier and 7in. on the 450 and 550 P-Tier models, helps improve overall forward visibility and straight sightlines to thefrontofthemachine. Also, with theremovaloftheDEFsystem, the 450 P-Tier model offers simplified maintenance and reduced system complexity while meeting emissions regulations. Lastly, the optional LED light package and

rear-view camera options take visibility to the next level, enhancing visibility for a more efficient job site.

Designed as an additional method of earthmoving, the John Deere 3812 large scraper, paired with the latest 460 P-Tier articulated dump truck, offers a 38-yard capacity and can be used in push load or top load applications. The 3812 is the first articulated dump truck drawn scraper to enter the John Deere lineup and features scraper controls that fully integrate with the 460 P-Tier ADT to increase productivity and ease of operation. Once the ADT is in scraper mode, the operator simply goes to work as the ADT and Scraper pan are integrated as one

seamless machine.

Meanwhile, the ADT automatically optimizes engine torque curves and differential locks, and selects a maximum cut gear to maintain momentum and boost productivity. Further integration includes scraper brakes, Deere encoded cylinders and a scraper pro package that enables push-button sequencing, additional cameras, scraper position and productivity feedback to the operator all through the new high-resolution display.

Lastly, the hitch and platform design allow conversion between anADTwith a dump bin or pulling a scraper, giving customers the ultimatefleetflexibilityandutilization of their equipment.

On the compact front, John Deere is expanding its performance tiering strategy and introducing a new generation of large frame compact track loaders and skid steer loaders. At the show, three of the five machines in this generation will be on display, including the 333 P-Tier and the all-new 334 P-Tier skid steer loader and 335 P-Tier compact track loader models.

These machines boast features like redesigned cabs with creature comforts including heated/vented seats, touchscreen displays, handsfree Bluetooth technology, JDLinkTM telematics, and can be equipped with optional surround view capabilities. The brand new 334 P-Tier and 335 P-Tier are optimized for customers who require

more horsepower and hydraulic flow from a compact machine. Boasting 118 gross hp in addition to pressure compensated load sensing hydraulics, these machines are smooth, powerful and ready to take on the most demanding applications.

Complementarytothesemachines, John Deere also will launch two new mulching head attachments, the MK76 and the MH72D. Also making their debut at the show, were the John Deere cold planer attachments powered by Wirtgen cutting technology. Compatible with some current Gseries skid steer models, as well as the freshly announced P-Tier skid steer loaders, four widths, including 18, 24, 30 and 40-in. sizes, will be available to match customer’s milling needs. Utilizing the expertise from decades of milling technology experience by the Wirtgen Group, these cold planers provide intuitive in-cab controls, including tilt float activation for seamless pass matching across rolling terrain.

Visible indicators for side plate depth, tilt angle and milling drum cut boundary ensure jobsite accuracy, while an optional pressure gauge aids in monitoring milling performance. Also, an optional water tank mounts within the cold planer frame for convenient filling and the nozzle kit effectively suppresses dust. Helping increase precision, the incorporated indicators help monitor drum width and cut boundary during operation. 

Volvo Opens Pre-Order Tool for ElectricAsphalt Compactor

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) announced at ConExpoCon/AGG that North American customers can now reserve the new DD25 Electric asphalt compactor online. Deliveries are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2024.

The pre-order system for the electric machines allows interested buyers to enjoy the convenience of an e-commerce tool while still getting customer support from their local Volvo CE dealer.

The Volvo DD25 Electric made its debut at the Las Vegas trade show and was a popular product among attendees. Roadbuilders were interested in how the machine could benefit their fleets, as were officials from government departments.

“It’s exciting to finally get to show off this new development in our electrification efforts,” said Justin Zupanc, head of asphalt compaction development. “We’re proud to offer our customers tangible solutions for reducing their carbon footprint, and we’re thrilled to launch our first zero-emission machine for the road segment.”

The addition of the DD25 Electric asphalt compactor brings the Volvo CEelectriclineuptosixcommercially available machines, with a mid-size excavator and mid-size wheel loader in the works.

Looking Under the Hood

The electric driveline of the DD25 Electric asphalt compactor is based on the same proven architecture and components found on the Volvo CE ECR25 Electric compact excavator and L25 Electric compact wheel loader, which have been successful in a variety of different applications and markets over the past few years.

Its zero-emission operation makes the DD25 Electric asphalt compactor ideal for sensitive or urban environments with strict emission regulations and for organizations that are looking to meet their own sustainability goals. Zero tailpipe emissions also mean a cleaner and more enjoyable work environment for operators, site teams and passers-by.

If used alongside other electric powered equipment, the DD25 Electric offers the possibility of a zero-emission job

site, the manufacturer said.

The DD25 Electric asphalt compactor is expected to operate for a full shift on a single charge (depending upon the type of job and intensity of the work cycle) using the same charging solutions as its forerunners, which allows customers to choose the right charger for their operation. The machine comes with an integrated on-board charger that enables charging from zero to 100 percent in as little as three hours, depending on AC power level. With an optional offboard DC fast charger, this can be achieved in just over an hour.

The double-drum DD25 Electric asphalt compactor offers

24 kWof available power, which is 30 percent more than the conventional Volvo DD25B compactor. The result is a more responsive machine in terms of speed and vibrations. It also performs better on grade due to the size of its components and better at high elevations when compared to a diesel machine, which loses power as you increase altitude, the manufacturer said.

Pre-orders opened in NorthAmerica first and will expand to other regions in the future. Those who would like to reserve a DD25 Electric asphalt compactor may visit volvoce.com/united-states/en-us/products/electricmachines/reservation/. 

BOMAG Exhibits Two New Generation

Milling Machine Designs at ConExpo

BOMAG Americas featured two of its new generation milling machine designs at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2023.

Offering a maximum 42.7-in. milling width, the BM 1200/35-2 features an enhanced swiveling mechanism for selective milling of road and ground surfaces, making it the right choice for county road, urban and roundabout applications.

With its lighter, more compact and highly maneuverable design, the BOMAG BM 2200/65 large planer boasts a modest, 58-in. milling radius — up to 14 percent smaller than other models — to increase efficiency in tight-radius applications like small cul-de-sacs.

Both BOMAG milling machines are designed for comfort and efficiency, featuring vibration-isolated operator stations for comfortable operation from either a seated or standing position. Additional cushioning at platform standing areas helps to ensure fatigue-free operation.

Their height-adjustable seats swivel 45 degrees in either direction to improve visibility.

The mills’slim contoured design gives the operator excellent visibility around the machine. Enhanced forward visibility offers operators a view of the cutting edge, milling track and the front danger zone around the conveyor for exceptional milling precision, according to the manufacturer.

Intuitive operation is the hallmark of BOMAG’s latest generation of cold planers. To simplify milling control, BOMAG offers Easy Level that clearly displays grade and slope settings on the large 7-in. display. Mill settings are quickly changed with minimal navigation and limited submenus on the monitor for intuitive, efficient operation.

Variable milling speeds between three application-specific presets on the control panel allow the operator to tailor drum speed to the material to increase milling efficiency. The slim design of the BMS 15 L tool holder increases milling drum efficiency by converting more power into force on the cutting tool.

BOMAG’s exclusive design improves cutter life and increases fuel efficiency by up to 20 percent. BOMAG offers a wide range of milling technologies from standard to fine to power drum designs to meet virtually any application need. The milling chamber’s side access door makes it possible for quick and efficient changing of milling drums.

With all key machine service points easily accessible, routine maintenance is completed quickly and efficiently on BOMAG mills. All filters can be conveniently reached from the operator’s platform through the wide-opening engine hood, as are the fill ports for fuel andAdBlue. Large left- and right-hand service panels provide simple accessibility to the machine’s auxiliary drive and milling gear, while engine service points are easily accessed from both above and below.

Pure Performance in Compact Class

Meeting Tier IV Final/Stage V emissions standards, the powerful 350 hp (260 kW) engine makes the BOMAG BM 1200/35-2 the highest performance planer in its class, the manufacturer said.

It effectively matches power with drum speed for efficient milling at depths reaching 13 in. Featuring a lateral arrangement of the milling roller, the mill excels in milling right up to obstructions like curbs or walls. Reduced material crushing results in milling performance increases of 30 percent. Maximum operating weight for the BM 1200/35-2 mill is 56,000 lb. Its height-adjustable conveyor belt offers a maximum discharge height of 15.7-ft. and swivels 45 degrees to either side to increase truck-loading flexibility. Both inner and outer conveyor belts can be quickly disassembled for simple servicing.

Its drive system offers infinitely variable working speeds reaching 15.2 fpm and travel speeds from 0-4.7 mph to reduce unproductive downtime while roading the mill.

Leading for Half-Lane

The 60,296-lb. BM 2200/65 half-lane mill’s powerful 630 hp (470 kW) engine perfectly matches power with milling speed for efficient milling to depths reaching 13.8 in. Machine power coupled with the BMS 15 L tool holder system makes this mill a cost-effective planer in the light 6.6-ft. class. Stepless platform side-shift up to 7.8 in. provides excellent visibility to the right cutting edge and side plate, allowing the operator to hold the milling line, according to the manufacturer.

To simplify milling control, BOMAG Easy Cut technology automatically regulates the height of the rear drive, so the rear of the machine follows the front to its set depth, making the operator’s work simpler. Its conveyor offers a 16-ft. discharge height plus larger, 130 degree conveyor slewing angle — 65 degrees to the left/right of center — allowing material to be efficiently discharged into trucks on both sides of the mill. To facilitate transport, the conveyor retracts to a length 23.6 in. shorter than previous designs.

The BM 2200/65 mill on display at ConExpo-Con/AGG was equipped with the BOMAG exclusive ION DUST SHIELD. With this unique system that protects machine workers, fine dust extracted from the milling chamber passes through the ION DUST SHIELD box before being blown onto the conveyor belt. Electrodes positively charge the fine dust, which encourages dust particles to bond together, forming non-hazardous course dust particles that are removed by the conveyor belt.

This technology meets the most stringent fine dust regulations by removing up to 88 percent more fine dust particles smaller than 10 microns in size than standard dust extraction systems, the manufacturer said.

Bobcat’s S86, T86 Loaders Set New Industry Benchmarks

From the inventors who introduced skid-steer loaders to the compact equipment industry comes the R-Series lineup of loaders — the most comfortable, durable and powerful machines ever made by the company. Bobcat Company’s latest offerings to the construction and landscaping arena are the T86 compact track loader and S86 skid-steer loader, setting new standards for efficiency and versatility, along with added control and comfort for the operator. The recently introduced models are the only machines that offer three hydraulic flow options in one — standard, high and super flow — to address simple projects requiring lower hydraulic horsepower to the most demanding attachment applications.

The West Fargo, N.D.-based global manufacturer is no novice in setting incredible benchmarks for itself and the industry. Bobcat has received recognition galore over the decades, the most recent being 2022 CES Innovation Awards in the categories of Vehicle Intelligence & Transportation and Smart Cities for the T7X all-electric compact track loader in 2021; Landscape Business Twenty for 2020 New Product Award for the R-Series loaders; and the 2019 International Forum Design Award for the R-Series E85 compact excavator.

North Dakota, where the equipment was invented more than 60 years ago, is where Bobcat’s regional corporate offices, global research and testing facility, production and engineering facilities and dedicated innovation space are located. Additional North American locations for training and manufacturing are in Minnesota, Colorado, North Carolina and Wisconsin. Internationally, the company has parts distribution centers, research and development facilities, sales offices, training centers and manufacturing facilities in several major cities. Bobcat employs more than 5,000 people in the United States and Canada, and Doosan, the corporate parent company, has more than 43,000 employed in its businesses across 38 countries.

“We sell products nationwide and worldwide. We have more than 700 dealers here in North America,” said Mike Fitzgerald, marketing manager, who has been with the company since 1987. “We cover a wide variety of different applications, and it’s changed significantly over the years as to how compact equipment is utilized. What was an extra piece of equipment on a job site 30 to 40 years ago, is now the only power unit that contractors have. Now, they have a wide variety of attachments that get their work

done. When I started, there were less than 10 groups of attachments that we offered. We now have more than 70 groups of attachments that we offer through the company. It’s changed significantly over the years which makes our products that much more beneficial and efficient to the customer that’s using it.”

Bobcat’s snow removal attachments alone offer a range of snowblowers, blades, pushers and buckets for skid-steer loaders, compact track loaders, mini-track loaders, subcompact and compact tractors, small articulated loaders and compact wheel loaders. It’s this versatility of using multiple attachments and implements on one machine for various functions that has earned Bobcat global fame. Empowering customers to accomplish more in less time using machines that are

built with stronger components that can endure challenging work conditions has been Bobcat’s mantra from day one. The S86 skid-steer loader and T86 compact track loader are just one example of how the company is consistently improving upon its own offerings, enhancing ROI for organizations large and small across the world.

“From the time we do our initial research to getting things put through and into production in a normal process, that’s a few years. We don’t do it overnight, and we put our machines through a rigorous testing regimen,” Fitzgerald said. “We have proving grounds in Arizona where we test machines to make sure that all components stand up to more than what we expect our customers to put them through.”

The Bobcat S86 and T86 loaders bring

additional weight-to-horsepower ratio and greater lifting ability, include Premium Power Performance power management system for improved engine-to-workgroup efficiency, offer better cooling for optimal operation and maximum uptime, and have a roomy cab for operators, with ergonomic controls, innovative displays, and machine interaction and monitoring capabilities — once again, delivering revolutionary solutions addressing customer pain points.

Despite the many obstacles presented by the pandemic over the last two years, including supply-chain issues and labor shortages, the Bobcat team has taken every challenge in stride, adapting to different ways of doing business but continuing to make its mark in the industry.

“The continued labor shortage is going to have to make people more efficient in the way they do business, how they work on their jobs and what they can do. We make it so that the equipment that you’re buying is more efficient and capable,” Fitzgerald said.

On the equipment side, he shared Bobcat had introduced some electric machines, keeping in mind that emissions are a big concern in some areas.

Innovation is an integral part of the Bobcat brand, and the company continues to devise smart solutions when it comes to its products. Using wireless communications for customers to have greater control of their machines and advanced technology features empowering operators to do more are just some ways the company is committed to its ethos. Bobcat is also committed to initiatives outside the organization, focused on community, education and the environment. Efforts have included employees participating in community services, STEM outreach in schools by staff volunteers to inspire students to consider STEM careers and providing equipment for natural disaster relief.

On future plans, Fitzgerald said, “We’re continually adding new products to our product offering, we have people that are researching what our customer wants and needs are, and then we feed that into our research and development groups to move forward. As we say in the business, ‘What was an exciting item yesterday is standard equipment today.’Things have changed significantly over the course of time, and we’re continually developing new products to better meet the needs of our customers, be it the main power units or attachments that will help those power units, with their return on investment, their utilization to better suit their needs and make them a more efficient operation.”

XtremeManufacturing,SnorkelDebut Wide Range of Equipment at Show

Xtreme Manufacturing and Snorkel debuted seven new Snorkel machines at this year’s ConExpo.

In the Electric-Drive Scissor Lift category, the company rolled out the S3013 Mini, the S3219 Plus and the S3220 Mini.

The S3013 Mini features a maximum working height of 19 ft., the S3219 Plus has a working height of 25 ft. and the S3220 Mini offers a working height of 26 ft.

All three models also come with an extendable platform as standard equipment and can fit through a standard doorway, making them ideal for indoor and outdoor applications.

In the category of Electric-Drive Mast Lifts, the TM20E joins Snorkel’s line of versatile and zero-emission mast lifts that feature a zero-degree inside turning radius and are compact enough for a wide range of applications.

Two new rough-terrain articulating boom lifts made their first appearance at the event — the 600AJ and the 600AJN. Both models feature maximum working heights of 66 ft. and maximum platform capacities of 1,000 lbs., but the 600AJN has a width of 7 ft. (compared to the 600AJ width of 8 ft. 1 in.) making it suitable for use in applications that require a narrower machine, such as tradeshow setup.

Four new models join Snorkel’s popular and environmentally friendly line of lithium-ion scissor lifts.

The S6926RTE, S6933RTE, S6940RTE and SRTE rough-terrain scissors offer working heights ranging from 32 to 53 ft. and feature Snorkel’s lithium-ion technology for quiet, zero-emission operation.

Xtreme Manufacturing unveiled its ground-breaking new tracked telehandler the company has affectionately nicknamed “Trackzilla.”

The mega-xtreme-capacity XR50100-G telehandler features a record-breaking maximum working height of 100 ft. and a maximum lifting capacity of 50,000 lbs., giving this monster of a machine the ability to handle the heaviest loads at the highest heights.

Another first for Xtreme is the Xtreme Glazier. The XR2215GL glass lifter features a two-section boom with a maximum extension of 65 in. and a lift capacity of 2,200 lbs. retracted and 500 lbs. extended.

Snorkel also exhibited machines from its existing lines of scissor lifts, mast lifts and boom lifts, as well as its popular ML18C material lift and XR619-A compact roller-boom telehandler.

Xtreme Manufacturing displayed a wide range of its telehandlers, including compact, high-capacity, ultra-highcapacity and ultra-xtreme-capacity models.

Joining Xtreme Manufacturing and Snorkel at their booth was BZISteel, a national leader in construction and technology for safer, simpler and more efficient building processes.

“Revolutionary innovations are developed by having great partners,” said James Harker, chief innovation officer at BZI (www.bzisteel.com).

“BZI and its company InnovaTec are honored to be invited by Xtreme Manufacturing to participate in their booth at ConExpo. BZI would like to express our deep appreciation to CEO and founder Don Ahern and the Xtreme Manufacturing team for collaborating and innovating with us to bring effective solutions to industry challenges.

Working together we will continue to advance construction technology solutions within the steel industry.”

BZI’s InnovaTech featured some of its unique attachments that connect seamlessly to Xtreme telehandlers and Snorkel boom lifts. These innovative tools allow for safer and more efficient steel erection. Just a few of the proprietary and patented advanced approaches and equipment developed by BZI’s Innovatech featured in the booth included:

• MezzMaster — Vastly improves the traditional means of lifting roofs and mezzanines using a proprietary telehandler attachment that consists of a system of clamps, leverages and controls that securely hold an assembly while navigating through the building footprint to final placement.

• WallMaster — Provides more efficient, simpler and safer wall system installations. WallMaster is a telehandler attachment designed to handle panelized, insulated metal panels and to work side-by-side with ground-level assembly on the panelization system.

• WeldAir100 — Designed specifically for Snorkel boomlifts, this innovative product consists of a framework with an inverter welder and an air compressor to provide welding and arc-blasting capabilities on the go. The WeldAir100 mounts to the back of a boomlift allowing equipment to travel with the machine, while welding cables and air hoses are channeled to the operator in the lift platform for ease of use. This solution eliminates the risk of entanglement and dramatically increases safety and productivity. 

Kubota Tractor Corporation, Crayola Refuel Partnership, Plan National Tour

Kubota Tractor Corporation and Crayola announced a renewed partnership building on the success of last year’s collaboration between the brands to show kids how teamwork can make a difference in their community.

The new venture is inspired by Kubota’s NASCAR partners like Trackhouse Racing and ThorSport Racing and includes an immersive, interactive event touring Crayola’s family attractions; at-home crafts and coloring pages at CrayolaExperience.com/Kubota and Crayola.com; and classroom activities and educational content.

Together, the brands will transform Crayola Experience family attractions into “Raceway Makeover by Kubota” in a fourmarket national takeover tour beginning later in May. The limited-time events will put kids (and kids at heart) in the driver’s seat of dozens of hands-on, auto racing-themed activities featuring Kubota equipment — such as tractors, mowers and RTVs — as they ready the fictional town of Crayonville for its new raceway.

Texas Investing Billions of Dollars for I-35 Improvements

The South project is adding two non-tolled high-occupancy vehicle managed lanes in each direction along I-35 from SH 71/Ben White Boulevard to SH 45 Southeast; elevating the HOV lanes between SH 71/Ben White Boulevard and Slaughter Lane; reconstructing several bridges; constructing a southbound I-35 intersection bypass lane that will allow traffic to bypass Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive; improving east/west connections over and under I-35; and adding approximately 13 mi. of new shared-use pedestrian and bicycle paths throughout the corridor. This project broke ground in 2022.

The North project will add one non-tolled managed lane in each direction along I-35 from SH 45 North to U.S. 290 East. The North project broke ground in March 2023.

The Central project will add two non-tolled managed lanes in each direction along I-35 from U.S. 290 East to SH 71/Ben White Boulevard.

The North project is valued at $606 million and the South project is valued at $548 million. Along with the Central project, all three projects are high-priority projects and include Texas Clear Lanes funding.

Each portion of the project is expected to take six to eight years to complete. The Central project is expected to begin construction in 2024.

“Currently public transit buses, registered van pools and emergency vehicles must remain in traffic with all other

vehicles on I-35,” states the web page. “Managed lanes would help manage overall traffic demand and provide qualifying vehicles with a more reliable route, allowing them to bypass congestion and arrive at their destinations more quickly.Transit would have access to the managed lanes in the proposed build alternatives, which could improve overall TxDOT is collaborating with CapMetro to study the feasibility of direct transit access and identify funding sources.

“[Managed lanes] are designed to provide a less congested route than adjacent general-purpose lanes during peak periods for qualifying vehicles. Examples of different types of managed lanes include non-tolled high-occupancy vehicle [HOV] lanes, transit-only lanes or special-use lanes,” according to the project page.

“The Central project proposes extensive improvements in a highly constrained urban area,” states the press release. “Additionally, [it] poses unique constructability challenges related to adding the necessary capacity and working within the downtown area that increase the construction timeline and cost. These factors introduce complexities that are not as present in the North and South projects.”

The impact of truck traffic was considered by the project planers.

On a daily basis, more than 200,000 vehicles travel on I35 within the project area, with 82 percent being local traffic, Through traffic comprises18 percent of total traffic.

The South project is adding two nontolled high-occupancy vehicle managed lanes in each direction along I-35; reconstructing several bridges; constructing a southbound I-35 intersection bypass lane that will allow traffic to bypass Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive; and more.

The impact of truck traffic was considered by the project planers.

“Even if there were no trucks that used I-35, the same number of lanes would be required to manage current and future demand,” stated the web page. In addition, incentives to use SH 130 would have little effect on trucks needing to make deliveries along the I-35 corridor.”

The design team stressed the need to accommodate Capital Metro’s Project Connect proposed light rail system at east-west crossings.

A diverging diamond interchange (DDI) that addresses congestion by allowing vehicles to travel more quickly through an intersection and improve safety by reducing the potential conflict points, is proposed for I-35 at Wells Branch Parkway.

Fluor has previously worked on the I-635 LBJ East, Southern Gateway and I-35E projects in Dallas; the Oak Hill Parkway project in Austin; and performing capital maintenance for the Horseshoe project in Dallas.

I-35 through Austin is one of the most congested highways in Texas. It serves as the backbone of the local, regional and national transportation network. Lack of mobility on I35 threatens the economic livelihood of the city and state and improvements are needed due to population and employment growth, which have caused increased congestion in the area.  CEG

CAP from page 1 Fluor Corporation began work on the Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) $548 million I-35 Capital Express South project, which is part of the multi-billion dollar I-35 Capital Express program taking place in Austin. The North project will add one non-tolled managed lane in each direction along I35 from SH 45 North to U.S. 290 East. The North project broke ground in March 2023. Local officials broke ground on the South portion of the project in 2022. Each portion of the project is expected to take six to eight years to complete.

underneath conveyors. We also make a material pusher that expands from 48 inches out to 96 inches long that is used to push that material out from under the pulley.”

Berlon had these items on display at ConExpo-Con/AGG this past March and according to Salzman, people were very intrigued by it.

Lowe’s product line-up includes auger drives, auger bits, trenchers and grapples.

“We offer our BP-Series planetary auger drives and the Classic Series chain auger drives, which Lowe built their business on and is a niche in the industry.”

Snow Removal Tools

Berlon also manufactures snow removal equipment.

“Our fourth quarter, which is our largest in our corporation, includes the normal demand of our traditional products in both divisions, but when we add in the snow products, it puts us over the top,” said Schickert.

In addition to the company’s line of blades, pushers and salt spreaders, Berlon makes a unique tool to clear snow.

“The Snowgrr is a unique attachment that windrows 16 feet all into one area,” said Schickert. “The main usage is in distribution centers. It is usually mounted to a skid steer and goes underneath the trailers that are backed up to the dock doors. The Snowgrr pulls all that snow out from underneath the nose of the trailers and put it into a nice windrow.”

Mount System

Berlon and Lowe attachments are made for a variety of manufacturers’ equipment and can be outfitted with either universal or custom mounts.

“There are so many mounts we can put on our product, including the old Gehl and New Holland machines that are not universal,” said Salzman. “We can make all those old mounts and put them on any one of our attachments, which makes us unique in the industry.”

Distribution

Berlon has approximately 1,600 distributors — construction, agricultural and rental dealers — throughout the United States, Europe and Canada. The company has added new dealers, new OEM customers and a cross-customer base through the Lowe acquisition.

“The acquisition of Lowe certainly allowed us to grow as a company,” said Schickert. “We are actively looking at other avenues to allow us to continue to grow.”

New Products

To keep growing, Berlon Industries continues to develop new products each year.

“We have recently introduced the new root rake grapple that is doing extremely well both on the mini- and full-sized skid steers,” said Schickert. “We really have

expanded our ability in the snow, especially with the mini-snow products such as snow pushers and snow blades. We’ve also developed a new bale spear carriage. So, some of our sales growth in doubling the size of Berlon has come from these new product introductions.”

Production

Expanding capabilities of manufacturing operations also is an important part of the company’s growth strategy. Automated saws, CNC break presses and robotic welding have been added to streamline production and increase capacity and productivity. Duetotheincreaseddemand, additionalproduction shifts also have been added.

Plans for Future Growth

Berlon Industries is currently experiencing a high growth pattern, and all indications are for that pattern to continue.

“I believe we are going to continue to grow through our dealer network, rental market, OEM relationships, regional expansion, new products and through acquisitions,” said Schickert. “This will lead to significant growth that we have planned here at Berlon. So, the future here looks very bright.”
