Largest Dam Removal in U.S. History Under Way

Construction to start the removal process of the Klamath River dams has begun and all four dams are scheduled to be removed from the river by the end of 2024, according to the latest report from KDRV.

Crews have begun constructing access roads to allow access for heavy equipment required for further construction activities. Existing bridges will need to be reinforced and new bridges will need to be constructed to enable construction equipment access. The Klamath River Renewal Corporation also is in the process of developing several sites to accommodate the workforce, installing job trailers and office space as well as lodging facilities for the construction crews. This is the beginning of a series of enabling construction projects that will

Bobcat Wins Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas Awards

Bobcat Company has been recognized as a winner of Fast Company’s 2023 World Changing Ideas Awards.

The World Changing Ideas Awards honor sustainable designs, innovative products, bold social initiatives and other creative projects that are changing the way we work, live and interact with the world. The world’s first all-electric compact track loader, the Bobcat T7X, received multiple Fast Company honors as it was selected as the winner of the Transportation category, a finalist in the General Excellence category and honorable mention in the North America category.

The T7X is the first of its kind to eliminate all hydraulic components and emissions. Fully battery powered, the T7X is designed to deliver a smaller carbon footprint and a quieter jobsite experience but also was built to outperform its diesel machine counterparts. This game-changing, totally emissions-free solution is positioned to transform how the world runs job sites, builds cities and thinks about a sustainable future — all while increasing jobsite power and productivity, the company said.

“Innovation is at the core of Bobcat’s

legacy. We invented the compact equipment industry 65 years ago with the development of the world’s first compact loader, and we continue to pioneer new products and services to help our customers accomplish more and create a more sustainable world,” said Joel Honeyman, Doosan Bobcat vice president of global innovation.

“There is always more work to be done and contributions to make within the industry. This is why Bobcat continues to invent new concepts, create new equipment, build smart technologies and develop innovative solutions to empower customers and lead the industry forward.”

This year’s World Changing Ideas Awards showcase 45 winners, 216 finalists and more than 300 honorable mentions — with health, climate, energy and AI among the most popular categories.

A panel of Fast Company editors and reporters selected winners and finalists from a pool of more than 2,200 entries across urban design, education, nature, politics, technology, corporate social responsibility and more.

Four Ways to Address Industry’s Technician Shortage

It’s no secret to anyone working in equipment manufacturing the ever-growing technician shortage is a problem poised to get a lot worse before it gets better.

According to a 2020 AED Foundation industry research report, the industry may need to fill as many as 73,500 heavy equipment technician positions by 2025. In addition, the report stated equipment manufacturing possesses a job opening rate three times higher than the national average. Among survey respondents, 95 percent agreed with the assertion there was a skills gap in the industry, while 89 percent reported a shortage of workers within the walls of their respective companies.

Now, I don't want to suggest the widespread technician shortage can be quickly addressed, let alone easily solved. However, equipment manufacturers can (and should) embrace and adopt a number of short-term and long-term strategies to set themselves up for sustained success as it relates to workforce development.

Let's examine four in detail:

Focus On Retention

So many pieces of the technician workforce puzzle can only be lightly influenced. However, one area companies can focus efforts to drive positive change as it relates to retention is workplace culture. Start by asking the following two questions:

Are exit interviews being conducted? -- Technicians leav-

ing an organization within the first six months could indicate an onboarding problem, while technicians leaving between 2.5 and 3.5 years could indicate a lack of development opportunities. With exit interviews, it's worthwhile to have both a manager and human resources representative conduct interviews separately, as each position is likely to elicit different responses from departing employee.

Are staying interviews being conducted? -- Talking with staff in key positions about their individual experiences can shed light on missed opportunities or future red flags. Engaging in staying interviews can be particularly helpful in the first 12 months to understand what it's like to be onboarded and how new employees experience the existing culture within the organization. Start by creating a culture check-in by surveying all employees. What changes can be made based off all the information learned? And remember, to those companies who aren't currently acting on employee feedback being received, asking for additional input can (and likely will) negatively impact culture moving forward.

Fill Talent Pipeline

There's really no overstating the importance of finding ways to fill an organizational talent pipeline. And while it takes time to secure a return on investments of time, effort and resources to do so, it's worth it to take proactive steps to ensure desired results.

Simply contacting the nearest local technical college once or twice a year isn't going to be enough to attract and acquire talent. Regularly engage with educational institutions. Be part of review committees. Get in front of students in classrooms. Donate equipment. More than anything else, do what it takes to be top of mind when these schools begin looking to place their best students. It will pay dividends over time.

In addition, it's important to connect with high schools feeding into technical college programs. One effective way to do so is to introduce the high schools to a free, available high school technician curriculum offered through Curriculum for Ag Science Education. It's not just an ag technician curriculum, but rather a program which introduces the technician career to a wide audience and enhances industry perception to parents, teachers and students. As a bonus, there is a built-in industry connection opportunity though the collection of used parts and by offering several class visits.

Organizations must be willing to shed light on the significant industry demand for qualified workers and worthwhile career opportunities, because chances are they aren't aware of the extent of the existing technician shortage. Technician program partnerships, apprenticeships, job shadowing or any other work-and-learn program are the most effective way to connect with new workers. And, ultimately, partnering with education is critical for retention, as technicians require ongoing training and development.

Diversify, Optimize Recruitment Strategies

Want to really move the needle when it comes to acquiring talent? Do the following:

Actively recruit women and minorities.

• Change the way job postings are written and where they are being posted.

• Check language in job postings via a gender decoder website to determine if it's overly masculine.

• Target locations and events where someone with the skills, interests, and hobbies of workers the organization wants to replicate might be out and see if the openings can be posted.

Collaborate With Others

Because the technician shortage is one of the industries biggest issues, AEM's Workforce Development Committee has created a technician taskforce. We'll be sharing examples of survey questions, stay interview questions and other practices being used by industry members to help move the needle in this space.

AEM also is partnering with, and supporting the work of, the AED Foundation. If you're not aware of the AED Foundation's work to accredit 100 colleges and recognize 150 high schools in heavy equipment technology programs, you can learn more about its Vision 2025 by visiting the AED Foundation website.

When it comes to understand the work being done to support the industry's need in this space, there are many associations that are trying to collaborate rather than duplicate efforts. Just as there's no one thing that a company can do to help ease the technician shortage, there's no one associate that can solve the challenge on their own.

With much work to be done and a new technician taskforce being formed, more information will be generated on this topic. In the meantime, make sure to visit AEM's Workforce Solutions Toolkit to access valuable resources. For more information, visit www.aem.org.

Hunt-Penta Begins $600M Vegas Convention Center Upgrade

Tourism and business leaders joined recently at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) to kick off a $600 million renovation of the facility’s legacy campus.

The renovation will extend the contemporary design, architecture, and customer experience of the 1.4 million sq.ft. West Hall, which debuted in 2021. Work will continue through 2025, with construction designed to accommodate and minimize disruption to scheduled tradeshows.

A ceremonial groundbreaking took place at the east side of the South Hall, which will be transformed into a sprawling new plaza and entrance. Steve Hill, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA), was joined by Jim Gibson, chair of both the Clark County Commission and the LVCVA board of directors, as well as members of the LVCVA board of directors and convention center oversight panel.

“We have been the number one tradeshow destination for nearly three decades and we are committed to being the number one tradeshow destination for another three decades,” said Hill. “This renovation will provide our customers with an experience that will make them want to come back year after year.”

Some key highlights of the renovation include:

• The continuation of the signature West Hall exterior ribbon roof will create architectural cohesion across the entire campus;

• An outdoor plaza and indoor lobby at the South Hall will create a sense of arrival and provide direct access to new prefunction space and a second-floor boardroom;

• A climate-controlled interior concourse between the North Hall and the South Hall will provide interior access across the entire campus;

• An expansive Grand Lobby between the North and Central halls will offer ample natural light and views of both halls;

• A newly designed parking lot outside of Central Hall (Silver Lot) will feature a Vegas Loop station to transport guests to/from Wynn and Encore (expected to debut in Spring 2024);

• Innovative technology, including sleek, digital displays, digital pylon signs, wayfinding and interactive information kiosks throughout the facility;

• Technology upgrades will result in upgraded electrical access for tradeshow organizers and exhibitors and increased connectivity for guests.

The LVCVA is represented by Miller Project Management Group, which oversees the construction of the project. Klai Juba Wald serves as the architect of record. A joint venture comprised of the Hunt Construction Group and the Penta Building Group serves as the contractor. More than 600 tradesmen and women will be utilized for the renovation.

With nearly 15 million sq. ft. of meeting and event space throughout the destination, the convention sector continues to significantly contribute to Southern Nevada’s economy. In 2022, Las Vegas hosted nearly 5 million convention attendees, whose spending during their stay directly supported an estimated 38,000 jobs, $2.1 billion in wages and $7.5 billion in economic impact, according to the Economic Impact of Southern Nevada’s Tourism Industry report recently published by the LVCVA’s Research Center. The LVCC is one of the largest convention centers in North America. In 2022, the facility hosted 56 conventions with a combined atten-

dance of nearly 900,000.

The renovation of the LVCC was set in motion in 2016 during the special session of the Nevada Legislature. Senate Bill No. 1 (SB1) was put in place to help fund the creation of the West Hall and the renovation of the LVCC’s existing campus, along with Allegiant Stadium. The Las Vegas Convention Center District Committee and Oversight Panel for Convention Facilities were established to review and approve renovation plans and financing.

While construction of the $1 billion West Hall moved forward, the renovation of the legacy campus was delayed due to the pandemic. In August 2022, the LVCVA board of directors approved design and construction plans for the legacy campus. The project will be funded with transfers from the LVCVA’s general fund, bonds supported by the LVCVA’s general revenues and the 0.5 percent room tax authorized by SB1 of the 2016 legislative session and the proceeds from the sale of the 10-acre Riviera parcel.

Crews Begin Removing First of Four Dams at Klamath River

DAM from page 1

take up the remainder of 2023 as crews prepare for drawdown of the reservoirs in January 2024 and the subsequent removal of the dams.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission approved this project — the largest dam removal in American history — in November 2022, a project valued at $450 million.

The Klamath River Renewal Corporation (KRRC) is leading the historic construction project. Omaha, Neb.-based Kiewit is the prime contractor on the job while Knight Piesold, headquartered in South Africa, is the civil prime design partner on the project. KRRC took over ownership of the dams from Pacific Power in July 2021. The project is expected to wrap in 2024.

Construction preparation work already is under way at Copco 2.

“That dam and all the facilities associated with Copco 2 at that location should effectively be out of the river no later than September or early October of this year,” said Mark Bransom, CEO of KRRC. “[Current] work includes bridge upgrades, new road construction to access the dam sites more easily, worksite development and more.”

According to the construction overview, crews will begin drilling and blasting operations at Copco 2 to remove it completely. That portion of the project is expected to be completed by this fall. A restored river channel will be built through the existing dam footprint.

Reservoirs behind the existing dams will be simultaneously drawn down over the next several months and other projects will be completed before the dams are removed. According to reports, the pre-removal include demolishing 100,000 cu. yds. of concrete, 1.3 million cu. yds. of excavation, 70,000 cu. yds. of “drill and shoot” and 2,000 tons of steel demolition.

After Copco 2, the J.C. Boyle Dam will be the second dam removed, followed by Copco 1 and then Irongate, according to the schedule. Restoration of the reservoirs and tributaries will begin in early 2024. The four dams have a combined height of 411 ft. Copco 2, which became operational in 1925, is the shortest of the four with a hydraulic height of 27 ft. and structural height of 63 ft.

In total, the four dams impound approximately 15 million cu. yds. of sediment.

KRRC said it is working with experts to monitor potential impacts to the river in the coming years after the removal of four dams.

"We want to wait a little while to allow the river to sort of find its course again," Bransom said. "Then we'll come in and add a light touch where it's appropriate to do so with some restoration that we believe will be beneficial, primarily for

habitat and passage conditions for migrating fish."

One of the goals of removing the dams is to protect the salmon population. KRRC is hopeful that population will return to the river and thrive once again.

"We're really trying to create conditions that are more favorable than those that exist today to support a more healthy environment for all the communities that rely on the river," Bransom said. 

Construction Technology Investment Hit $5.38B in 2022

in its day-to-day operations has been proven wrong again post-COVID.

That’s the word after observations by IntellectSoft, a digital transformation consultant and engineering firm.

“The reality is, compared to others, engineering and construction stepped out of the pandemic crisis in a better state despite all odds,” said the company. “Many wonder where such a drive came from. Well, the allowance for sustainable growth and new use of technology in construction made it all possible.”

David Mitchell, founder and CEO of construction technology company XYX Reality, agreed.

“Many construction sites today look like something out of a sci-fi movie,” said Mitchell.

Sites are filled with automated robots, extended reality headsets, touchpads and everything with a flashing light, Mitchell said. “Increasingly complex software — and hardware — is changing the construction industry.”

In fact, construction technology investment hit $5.38 billion in 2022, according to investment specialists Cemex Ventures.

Suite of Complements

Mitchell said BIM alone has virtually eliminated the cumbersome process of communicating, from the back office to the job site, the daily operation plan.

“This digitization of the design and build process gives construction crews and engineers the ability to manipulate, simulate and visualize models in real time,” he said.

An expanding suite of complementary technologies that integrate with BIM are bringing digital designs into the physical world. That’s making it easier to build to specs, boosting construction to eliminate rework, said Mitchell, in management consultant Fast Company’s website blog.

Field engineers can compare holograms of 3D design models to real-world structures using Augmented Reality (AR). They can monitor a building in real-time using sensors to compare it against a digital twin and proactively identify errors.

Finally, said Mitchell, “construction is going digital, taking human error out of the picture once and for all — a critical step in eliminating error.”

The accuracy and speed of digital information means it can be shared easily, especially using cloud platform. Digitally enabled hardware can collect data in the field. This feature establishes a home for artificial intelligence (AI) in construction, said Mitchell.

Compute vision (CV) brings AI to life by analyzing images. It also can monitor environments and identify any perceived safety risks on the job site.

AI can “handle project data, managing resources like budgets, materials and energy to automate processes” that ultimately free up time for other tasks, he said.

Another headache eliminated from the project: rework. A “stubborn stumbling block,” rework is quickly becoming a thing of the past.

“Architects, engineers and construction crews are already adopting cutting-edge technology,” said Mitchell.

Lead general contractors are seeing the returns, reporting as much as nine times ROI, he said.

“We’ve seen AR reduce rework to as little as one percent on projects, providing cost and environmental savings.”

Mitchell believes it’ll take time to convince an entire industry to “adjust to this futuristic normal,” and confidence

is needed.

“But it’s already happening and is accelerating,” he said. “It’s catch on quickly — or be left in the dust.”

Getting On BIM Bandwagon

Each software component to a BIM system is unique in one way or another, said Jim Stephen, account executive of Microsol Resources.

But all the components have a common goal for their users of managing projects more effectively and efficiently, said Stephen in an article for ohsonline.

Software functionalities include the ability to create accurate 3D project models including all elements and phases of construction.

Data management is another BIM feature, tracking performance metrics, material specs and cost information, said Stephen. The systems allow multiple stakeholders to work together on a project in real time via cloud-based platforms. And the renderings they offer are realistic images of a project, designed for client presentations and reviews.

BIM features can analyze and simulate the design of a project to identify potential problems on the job. These functionalities are capable of estimating the cost of the project and then creating a completion timeline.

“This list is also growing,” said Stephen. “As technology continues to develop and more products hit the market, there will be new ways in which BIM can be used.”

Construction site safety is a key benefit of BIM. It can play a major role in eliminating risk by providing a common digital platform for stakeholders, he said.

The technology improves hazard prevention “perhaps the most beneficial way in which BIM can support safety on construction sites.”

First, it can help with the development of a detailed plan covering all steps of the project and can identify potential risks along the way, said Stephen.

“This makes it easier to identify areas that may be more prone to hazardous activity and proactively address them before construction starts.”

The digital reports and simulations generated are valuable in understanding the risks associated with a particular task.

“This aids in creating safer conditions for works, as well as reducing the time and effort spent on rectifying errors.”

And, said Stephen, BIM’s ability to streamline communication among different teams on a site is key to ensuring safety during construction.

“By creating a single source for project information and a platform for real-time collaboration, BIM can reduce the risk of miscommunication or mistakes.”

The technology also allows stakeholders to coordinate and visualize onsite spatial relationships to reduce hazards associated with the site’s physical layout.

This includes the ability to measure distances between objects, identify blind spots and assess interferences between different areas of the site.

“Such planning can reduce the likelihood of accidents due to inadequate space or incorrect placement,” Stephen said.

A BIM construction site simulation offers workers a virtual walk-through of their workspace, as well as the potential hazards they may come across.

Finally, BIM enables architecture, engineering and construction professionals to standardize and prefabricate components and materials in a controlled environment.

“This contrasts with the traditional way of doing things on

site, which is often unpredictable and chaotic,” said Stephen. “In a digital environment, engineers can accurately assess each element to make sure it is safe and suitable for use in the actual construction process.”

Experts consider BIM a critical component of the modern AEC industry’s innovation and eventual transition into a fourth revolution, said Stephen.

“Its capabilities are a significant upgrade from decades past, when professionals would rely on multiple physical plans and tools throughout the building process.”

Other Technologies Gaining Ground

Beyond BIM and automation, self-repairing materials, drones, virtual reality and sustainability are at play in the “coolest” construction technologies in use today.

Trimble believes that self-healing building materials such as concrete made from fungi “might not be as far-fetched as it sounds.”

In the company’s Viewpoint blog, Charity Heller wrote that technologies are in fact being developed using bacterial or enzymes to create self-healing concrete.

Synthetic building material can strength and grow itself, “meaning stronger and more durable structures, and longer time in between maintenance,” wrote Heller. With augmented and virtual reality tools, workers are able to accurately test out designs, plan projects and create 3D models of their build specs.

“The virtual environment helps construction professionals undertake complex engineering tasks with stunning visuals, a wider range of materials and collaborative working options,” said Heller. “Augmented and virtual reality tools are starting to replace traditional methods like paper blueprints with interactive visualizations.”

This in turn allows for deeper exploration of the project, leading to better results and a great deal of saved time, she said.

“Therefore, virtual reality tools are becoming essential for architects and construction workers to make sure their work is planned out correctly.”

Heller said what’s new in data automation is the huge volume of construction data being collected.

“More importantly, turning all that data into actionable information that can accessed by the right people,” she said. Cloud-based construction technology delivers connected, role-based information to different construction teams.

The teams may be in different locations and need different levels of access and types of information. The cloud can facilitate the sharing process.

Sustainability has been top of mind for many construction companies for a while now. Many of the cool technologies Heller discussed have the additional benefit of advancing sustainability, she said.

“But there are many new technologies that make it easier to reduce emissions, waste and use fewer resources and less energy.”

Solar panels, for example, generate power, reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Biodegradable materials at play now include cork, bamboo and mycelium. Use of low-carbon cross-laminated timber is set to more than triple by 2030.

And, noted Heller, prefabrication and modular building materials continue to lessen the environmental impact of the construction site.

“It’s an exciting time to be looking ahead at construction technology, even if hover-cars are still a few years away.”

Revenue-Generating Ideas for Land Clearing Contractors

Spring has sprung! With days getting longer and temperatures on the rise, it’s time for land clearing professionals to break out their equipment and prepare for a productive — and profitable — season.

Make the most of your time and tools with these four revenue-generating ideas:

Spring Cleaning

Among the biggest opportunities for land clearing pros during spring is cleaning up the mess that winter leaves behind. In northern regions, brush and debris become trapped beneath layers of snow. Across the country, farmers need fields cleared of trees and other materials in preparation for the upcoming growing season.

“After the snow is gone and before ground foliage comes in is the best opportunity to see exactly what is on the ground,” noted Matt Nelson, director of development at Diamond Mowers. “This clear line of sight helps operators avoid hitting rocks and other obstructions while mulching and clearing.”

Employ a brush cutter to slice through grass, brush, branches and trees to keep land neat and manicured and prevent weeds from sprouting. To clear large expanses of land, opt for the speed and productivity of a disc mulcher. Its distinctive disc design stores energy and combines it with hydraulic power to enable operators to slice and process trees and brush in their path.

For those working with midi-excava-

tors, Diamond Mowers’ new excavator drum mulcher is a great choice for tackling post-winter clean-up. Its torque powers through material up to 8 in. in diameter. For heavy-duty land reclamation and forestry management, the excavator disc mulcher pro X is available in 36 in. or 48 in. cutting widths and can process material up to 12 in. in diameter.

Removing Invasive Species

Early spring is an effective time to remove many species of invasives. Clearing them out before they go to seed is critical as these tenacious intruders pose serious risks by altering and degrading the environment, overtaking resources native grasses need to live, and ruining valuable grazing and production land.

Following are some of the most common invasive species by region:

• Midwest — Easter Redcedar

• Northeast — Multiflora Rose

• Northern Plains — Eastern Redcedar

• South Central — Mesquite

• West — Juniper

Managing and even eradicating invasive species is an attainable goal, especially if new introductions are detected early. Start by trimming back branches and tall brush. Next, utilize a disc or drum mulcher to grind tree trunks into chips for easy removal or natural decomposition. Then, finish the job with a stump grinder to completely eliminate invasive species at the source.

“For those seeking a versatile attachment, Diamond Mowers recently introduced the Drum Mulcher OD Pro X, which boasts an optimized infeed system that produces a smaller end product than conventional open drum models,” said Nelson. “This heavy-duty mulcher provides power and flexibility for harsh mulching needs and is a great choice for when significant ground contact is expected.”

Maintaining Fence Lines

Spring is the ideal time to maintain fence lines and cut back overgrowth in preparation for spring planting and grazing.

“Grasses and trees that touch the wires of electrical fencing can cause it to ground out and lose power,” said Nelson. “Keeping vegetation cut back and away from wires will help to keep critters out and livestock in.”

Diamond Mowers offers several attachments to help get the job done. The Brush Cutter Pro, for instance, features a lower push bar that reaches under most bottom wires for quick maintenance.

A drum mulcher may be the best option for jobs involving considerable mulch and brush management. Depth control and open drum mulching attachments are great for agricultural applications and roadside maintenance. Their discharge geometry is specifically designed to send material down toward the ground, limiting the amount of thrown material and making them ideal for preparing fence lines along busy roads or near buildings.

Storm/Disaster Clean-Up

April showers may bring May flowers, but spring also heralds the beginning of storm season. If you live in an area prone to tornadoes, hurricanes or forest fires, be prepared for disaster cleanup jobs with equipment that can cut, shred, mulch and process downed trees, broken branches and burnt brush.

“Whether you’re cleaning up after a hurricane, flood or fire, it’s important to have the correct tools at your disposal,” explained Nelson. “Clearing the land of harmful debris quickly reduces hazard potential, gets landowners back to work, and keeps areas looking beautiful.”

After severe weather, the land can be littered with hazardous trees and brush. Specifically designed to mulch these materials, the TR Boom Drum Mulcher DC can fulfill all reaching, cutting, and processing needs without leaving branches and other material strewn on the ground, so there’s no need for a clean-up crew to achieve a wellgroomed result. It can work through material faster and requires less maintenance and fewer consumable costs than attachments that also cut grass. It also is a great choice for working near roads or in populated areas due to a bolt-on door on its backside that holds chips and controls thrown debris.

MB Crusher’s Padding Bucket

MB Crusher’s new MBHDS220 padding bucket, which weighs in at 2,200 lbs. and has a load capacity of 0.8 cu. yd., is suitable for loaders and skid steer loaders from 9,900 to 24,000 lbs.

Compact, versatile, and highly maneuverable, the new MB Crusher MB-HDS220 padding bucket is designed to make work easier, reduce processing time and save on operating costs, according to the manufacturer.

• The size of the mouth opening — 7.2 ft. — facilitates loading by ensuring that the tracks or wheels of the carrier machine remain clean.

Compact, versatile, and highly maneuverable, the new MB Crusher MB-HDS220 padding bucket is designed to make work easier, reduce processing time and save on operating costs, according to the manufacturer.

• The inlet is designed to convey material quickly to the rotors.

• Maintenance is simple — greasing is centralized and done on-site, as with all MB Crusher products.

• The coupling system is designed to allow a maximum margin of movement of the operating machine. This system allows enhanced visibility of the material to be worked on and of the site.

As with the other HDS models, the MBHDS-220 allows the operator to change the

rotors quickly and directly on-site. This makes it a versatile machine with which different types of material can be processed efficiently and quickly, the manufacturer said.

Areas of Application

Designed and conceived for gardening, landscaping and urban construction sites, the new MB-HDS padding bucket is the solution for all construction sites that want to combine efficiency and versatility in a compact piece of equipment. 

Volvo Trucks Announces 2022 Dealer Group of Year Winners

Volvo Trucks North America named two of its North American dealers as U.S. and Canada Dealer Groups of the Year.

Massachusetts-based Ballard Truck Center was named the 2022 U.S. Dealer Group of the Year and Sheehan’s Truck Centre in Ontario was named the 2022 Canadian Dealer Group of the Year. The award recognizes exemplary performance across several key areas, including reaching sales targets, business growth and customer satisfaction.

“Our two award winners played a key role in helping to increase market share and customer satisfaction for Volvo Trucks as they remained focused on delivering quality vehicles and services in another challenging year,” said Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America.

“We are excited to announce Ballard Truck Center as the 2022 U.S. Volvo Dealer Group of the Year and Sheehan’s Truck Centre as the 2022 Canadian Volvo Dealer Group of the Year and proud to honor their

outstanding performance in all of the criteria including customer satisfaction and business performance, with a focus on expanding Volvo’s sustainability efforts and service offerings.”

Sheehan’s Truck Centre was founded in 1989 by Pat and Gayle Sheehan. Pat was a former truck driver and considered a true trucking ambassador in the industry. Their children, Kelly and Dennis, took over the dealership in 2000, growing it into one of the largest used truck dealers in Canada. The Sheehan’s chose to locate the dealership’s headquarters in Burlington, Ontario to serve the large Toronto market and purchased Beaver Truck Centre in 2017 to add facilities in Winnipeg and Brandon, Manitoba.

The dealership was a 2020 Volvo Trucks North America Used Truck Dealer Group of the Year award winner and continues to make investments in modern facilities and services.

‘We continue to grow in our current location with a focus on my father’s goal to become Canada’s premier Volvo Trucks

dealer and are excited to receive the award of Volvo Dealer Group of the Year for Canada,” said Kelly Sheehan, president, Sheehan’s Truck Centre.

“The award recognizes the work that my brother and I, along with our whole team have done to provide unmatched service and support to our customers.”

For more information about Sheehan’s Truck Centre, visit www.heavytrux.com.

Ballard Truck Center is a fifth-generation family-owned business operated by co-owners John Picking and Steven Grahn and headquartered in Avon, Mass., ideally located to support and service customers in the Boston market and throughout the Northeast from its seven locations, spanning three states.

Ballard Truck Center was awarded top U.S. dealer in Customer Satisfaction in 2019 and recently became the first Volvo Truck Certified Electric Vehicle Dealer in Massachusetts at its Tewksbury location.

“Ballard Truck Center is honored to receive this award that recognizes our efforts

to adapt and expand our business to meet the evolving needs of our customers,” said John Picking, president, Ballard Truck Center.

“Our team of dedicated employees has been keeping New England rolling for more than 100 years by always making customer service our primary focus.”

The Dealer Group of the Year Award winners were announced at Volvo Trucks’ recent annual awards dinner in Las Vegas.

Topcon Announces Its Strategic Investment in DDK Positioning Heidelberg Materials Acquires Southeast’s SEFA Group Inc.

Heidelberg Materials announced that it has completed the purchase of The SEFA Group Inc., the largest recycler of fly ash sold for use in concrete products in the United States. This acquisition further strengthens the company’s cementitious footprint in the key Southeastern U.S. market and provides a solid platform for growth on the path to carbon neutrality.

Based in Lexington, S.C., the operations of The SEFA Group include five business units, five utility partners, 20 locations and more than 500 employees. The SEFA Group currently supplies quality fly ash to more than 800 concrete plants in 13 states.

With this transaction completed, Heidelberg Materials reaches another milestone in its continued focus on portfolio optimization and moves forward with positioning the company as the front runner on the path to carbon neutrality and circular economy in the construction materials industry.

“We are pleased to complete this important acquisition and we welcome the SEFA

Group and its more than 500 hundred employees to Heidelberg Materials,” said Chris Ward, president and CEO of Heidelberg Materials North America.

“The SEFA Group is an exciting addition to our businesses in North America and we look forward to the possibilities ahead.”

Topcon Positioning Systems has made a strategic investment in DDK Positioning Ltd, an Aberdeen based specialist in GNSS receivers and PPP correction services.

DDK Positioning delivers services exclusively over the Iridium network to provide global precision positioning services that can augment GNSS constellations to significantly enhance their accuracy for critical industrial applications. Terms of the investment are not being disclosed.

“For a number of years, Topcon has been a supplier of core GNSS components to DDK Positioning to deliver their MAX services,” said Ian Stilgoe, VP of Emerging Business at Topcon.

“With the expansion and growing success of this business, specifically in the Marine sector, a closer cooperation will ensure optimal integration for the highest possible accuracies and performance in the most demanding applications.”

Positioning, said, “This partnership provides an extraordinary opportunity for our two companies to work together in pursuit of our shared ambition — providing a robust, resilient and truly unique GNSS positioning service. We are extremely excited about partnering with Topcon and it’s a great fit for

DDK Positioning, not only will it allow us to continue to develop best in class positioning services, we will also be able to continue to grow the company and expand our services globally.”

Volvo Delivers First Machine Made Using Fossil-Free Steel

At ConExpo 2023 in Las Vegas, Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) handed over the keys to the first construction machine made from fossil-free steel for a North American customer — and it’s the second delivery in the world.

The machine, an A30G articulated hauler, has been purchased by Pennsy Supply Inc., a CRH company and long-standing Volvo CE customer, for use at its East Petersburg Quarry in Pa.

The hauler was handed over by President of Volvo CE Melker Jernberg to Scott Parson, president Americas Materials at CRH — a long-standing customer of Volvo CE.

“At Volvo CE, we believe partnership is the new leadership. The handover today to Pennsy Supply demonstrates what can be achieved when we work together with like-minded and forwardthinking partners who share our vision and commitment to sustainability and want to lead our industry to change,” Jernberg said.

Swedish steel manufacturer SSAB produced the fossil-free steel using a completely new technology with fossil-free electricity and hydrogen. The result is a significantly lower climate impact in SSAB’s production process — an at least 90 percent reduction in CO2 emissions — and an important step toward a net-zero emis-

sions value chain, the company said.

“No business can solve the complex challenges such as climate change alone,” Parson said. “We need to actively partner with key players throughout our value chain to innovate and create new business solutions. Volvo and SSAB have converted emerging

At the Association of Women Contractors, we believe that our future women business owners start out in the industry in the field, in trades and managing projects. Through these scholarships, we aim to assist recipients in affording their education, connecting with members, and developing a strong support system. AWC provides two (2) types of scholarships for outstanding FEMALES: Academic and Apprentice.
