ultiple construction and construction materials industry segments converged on the Las Vegas Convention Center and Festival Grounds as they came together for ConExpo-Con/AGG 2020 to unveil new technologies and products, share knowledge, network with industry peers and buy equipment. Registrations for the show totaled more than 130,000. At the conclusion of the show, cancellations from international attendees totaled less than 1 percent. “We refer to ConExpo-Con/AGG as the ‘heavy metal’ show, but it’s more than that,” said Mary Erholtz, vice president of marketing of Superior Industries and ConExpo-Con/AGG 2020 show chairperson. “It’s also small equipment, education and technology. And that was reflected in

every way this week. Giant machines, incredible exhibits, fantastic education and huge expectations. Organizers of ConExpo have a legacy of building and innovating on previous shows, and the 2020 gathering extends that record of success. This has been one of the best editions of ConExpo — ever.” Exhibitors across the show, from the Festival Grounds to North Hall to Bronze Lot to South Hall, expressed enthusiasm for the tremendous engagement they received from contractors and producers looking to purchase equipment. We were very pleased with the strong showing from the 300-plus exhibitors at IFPE 2020, and we are looking forward to the 2023 show.” Mike Ballweber, president, Doosan Bobcat echoed those sentiments. “Tuesday for us was record breaking in terms of leads and attendance at our booth, which is how we measure how successful the show is for us. We had more people to our booth on the first day than all of the 2017 show. This is a once-every-three-years show, and our dealers and customers were really excited to be here.” With growing concerns about COVID-19, show management worked closely with the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and the Southern Nevada Health District to make sure exhibitors, vendors and attendees were provided with heightened cleaning services and hand sanitizers to help reduce the spread of germs and enable show participation to stay healthy on site at the show. “We have been pleased with the success of the overall show and attendance in our booth,” said Ingo Schiller, president and CEO of Tadano America Corporation. “The management team at ConExpo has been monitoring the situation and they made a very difficult decision to close the show a day early. During ConExpo-Con/AGG 2020 from Tuesday, March 10 through Friday, March 13 at the Las Vegas Convention Center, contractors from across the United States expressed pervasive optimism about the construction industry for 2020. Construction Equipment Guide (CEG) spoke with contractors at the show to get their thoughts about the industry and ConExpo. We asked attendees about their outlook for the construction industry in 2020, why they attended ConExpo-Con/AGG 2020 and what specifically they were they were looking to learn more about or to purchase and what kind of work they do. Many were looking to see exhibitors both large and small with an eye on new technologies. “We see business increasing a lot in 2020 … especially for our company in Hawaii,” said both Mark Na’auao and Jaime Galam of Na’auao Traffic Control, Wailuku, Hawaii. “Even though there are not a lot of traffic control companies exhibiting here, we have attended the last three shows and enjoy seeing what’s new. Our company works in traffic control and pro-

vides services for all types of projects and events. We are excited to see Volvo and their Gold Rush booth but love seeing everything that is developing in the industry.” Gregory Nible of Ruach Resources, Tioga, N.D., said simply that his boss thought that attending the show was invaluable. “I’m here to see the trucks on display for the most part,” he said. “Our outlook as a company is very positive. Flaring rules in North Dakota keep us busy. I provide ready mix and crushed rock.” Mike Griffith of Griffith Excavating Inc., Baker, Mont., said, “We brought some of our new guys to see the show, and what the industry has to offer, especially the smaller companies you don’t always hear about. We mostly work in the oil and gas sector in site construction but build some commercial and residential properties, too. I wanted to see Deere and Bobcat. We usually trade up after 1,000 hours, so we’ll see what the show has to offer.” Dragan Dabizljevic of Rilco Inc., Rock Island, Ill., said “2020 looks great. The economy is good, and it’s good to see small companies at the show. I’m here because this is where my customers are. I am always looking for new leads. We deal in lubricant sales and equipment reliability services.”

Ralph Cotterman of Hills Machinery Company, North Charleston, S.C., said “It will be a good year, and we should see continued growth. I came to the show to see what we can add to our product line. There are several companies I came to see such as Eagle, Edge and Case.” Jonathan Gordon of Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, Sterling, Va., said that 2020 is looking positive for his organization’s sector. “I’m here for the multitude of equipment on display. My primary focus is in fleet management and I want to see Cat and Thunder Creek.” Ethan Courter of the Walbec Group, Waukesha, Wis., said “It looks like a good year, similar to last year. It’s my first trade show and I am here to learn. I handle pit and quarry paving and I’m here to see it all.” While it is still too early to know for sure, if ConExpo attendees are correct, the industry is in for another great year. With well-established companies looking as strong as ever at the show and many smaller companies showcasing new technologies, the outlook for 2020 looks promising. Even as concerns over economic reactions to COVID-19 rise, the construction industry will hopefully remain solid and continue to grow.  CEG

‘Disruptive’ Major Freeway Project Planned in Phoenix PHOENIX (AP) — Transportation planners are spreading the word that the start of a multiyear project to rebuild a critical freeway corridor in the heart of the Phoenix metro area is only about a year off. The project includes adding traffic lanes and building new bridges on parts of an 11mi. stretch of Interstate 10. That stretch extends northward from the junction with the state Route 202 freeway in Chandler to where I-10 meets Interstate 17 in central Phoenix near Sky Harbor International Airport. “This is going to be the most disruptive project we’ve had in this region from a transportation perspective,” warned Eric Anderson, executive director of Maricopa Association of Governments. the Arizona Department of Transportation. Primary funding for the $700 million project comes from a half-cent sales tax approved by Maricopa County voters in 2004, ADOT spokesman Tom Herrmann said. Herrmann said department officials anticipate completing the final environmental assessment and receiving a favorable finding of “no significant impact” within the next 60 days. The heavily-traveled stretch is often jammed mornings and late afternoons with commuters and long-distance travelers, though the recently opened South Mountain Freeway ringing part of metro Phoenix is expected to divert some traffic either heading across the metro area or just passing Phoenix and its sprawling suburbs. Anderson told Phoenix City Council members recently that the project could save up to 2 million hours of travel time a year, KJZZ-FM reported. Much of the reconstruction will center around a segment where five bridges will be built in the vicinity of state Route 143, a short north-south freeway. Its alignment east of Sky Harbor. In the the northern part of the project area, a collector-distribution road system will be built to reduce the

number of lane changes on the main portion of I-10 and improve traffic flow, the Arizona Department of Transportation said. Other work includes expanding interchanges with SR 143 and U.S. 60, another freeway that connects with I-10. John Bullen, MAG’s transportation program manager, said a dynamic traffic simulation model is being developed to help plan the construction work. “So based on the real world inputs, we’ll be able to develop ‘what if’ scenarios to understand how construction might impact traffic and what tools really we have at our disposal to be able to mitigate some of those impacts, to make things smoother,” Bullen said. Project Details • Add lanes for a total of six general purpose and two HOV between I-10/I-17 and Baseline Road. • Add one lane south of Baseline Road to just north of I-10/Loop 202. • Add region’s first collector-distributor roadway system — eastbound SR 143 to Baseline Road and westbound Baseline Road to SR 143 and 40th Street. • Build five bridges. • Widen SR 143 and U.S. 60 interchange. 

It helps them craft a powerful resume when they apply to work on federally funded projects, where contractors must adhere to regulations on representation by women and members of other economically disadvantaged groups. Beyond that, the larger goal of the Construction Academy is to help all participants view construction as not just a job but a viable career. Though this was the first targeted session, ADOT’s Construction Academy has already done a good deal to help more women enter the industry. About 35 percent of the 600 graduates of the academy so far have been women. Three-quarters of all Construction Academy participants have gone on to work in the construction field as flaggers, commercial truck drivers, heavy equipment operators, highway surveyors, electricians, carpenters, painters, pipe fitters, concrete finishers and block masons. Depending on the position, they start out earning $14 to $24 an hour, and sometimes more. There are seats available for Construction Academy sessions in April and May. According to Volvo, it may announce what this is by late spring or even later based on ever-changing situation with the pandemic. Finkbeiner Retires Its C-Series Sennebogen Log Handler In Sennebogen terms, generations have passed since Finkbeiner KG commissioned its electric-drive Sennebogen 835 C-Series machine in 2003. Over the next 16 years, Sennebogen established new benchmarks for safety in material handlers with its DSeries line-up, then led the drive to new levels of “Green Efficiency” energy savings with the launch of its E Series machines in 2012. So finally, after 55,000 service hours on the job, the Finkbeiner family bid farewell to the old 835. The morning started with a press event in which CEO Giorgio Carera and Product Support Manager Lee Smith gave an overview of all the new products being presented at the show. Products introduced during the press event included: the FAE BL1 and the brand new BL2 series of mulching heads, which are the very first of a new family of Bite Limiter mulcher attachments and a complete redesign of previous mulching heads; the newly designed, PTO-driven FAE MTH cutter for road construction, specifically grinding, milling and rock crushing; the new FAE Sonic System, a product for skid steer and excavator mulching heads that combines an auxiliary hydraulic motor and an Electronic Intelligence System that continuously changes the switch point for the highest torque possible to the rotor; a new SCL (Stump Cutter Light) stump cutter for compact excavators; and the new updated PrimeTech PT 175 prime mover, now featuring a new Tier IV Final engine. The day ended with an award ceremony for those purchasing the most FAE products and the dealers who were the top sellers of FAE products throughout 2019. Makinex’s Smallest 3-Phase Generator Makes Its Debut at World of Concrete At the World of Concrete show in Las Vegas, Makinex takes another step toward providing practical and convenient onsite power solutions for power-hungry contractors and tradesmen in the concrete, masonry and flooring industries. Makinex is extending its compact three-phase power generation family with a new 23kW 480V model. Less than one third the size and weight of comparable towable and skid generators, the 23kW is in a class of its own. It is the world’s smallest 3-phase 480V generator in this class. “The small size of the 23kW generator makes it a no-brainer for polishing and prep contractors,” said Jeff Durgin, general manager, Gamka, N.J. “Now they can bring a 480V power source plus all of their equipment on a single trailer” Maneuverability at the job site is equally important, with trailer and skid access getting harder to obtain on construction sites. Superior Efficiency and Convenience The 23kW uses permanent magnet brushless alternator technology and has completely independent circuits for 120V and 480V. This guarantees clean 480V three phase power that is unaffected by any load on the 120V circuit. These advance alternator features result in 15 percent more power than from conventional copper wound alternators, and eliminates electronics used to regulate voltage. In addition, the generator comes with industry standard 50A, 30A and 20A outlets, and is able to run single phase and three phase equipment simultaneously. In contrast, most conventional commercial generators only offer switchable voltage selection, and do not come with power distribution outlets as standard. This is the cause of countless cabling errors, which can result in accidental damage to the equipment being used. “Most generators are built for stand-by applications, not the portable heavy-duty power applications you see in the concrete and flooring industry,” said CEO of Makinex Rory Kennard. “This market has been grossly underserved by generator makers. We aim to give them power products that

tampering and unauthorized use or transport. It allows the user to immobilize and track the machine remotely, and alerts are sent when a trigger is activated. The machine is immobilized when it’s shut down and can be remobilized through Volvo’s CareTrack web portal. Telematics systems are standard equipment on many new machines. Online bid management software provider iSqFt pushes use of the technology in a blog post saying, it “can act as a deterrent by shutting down the engine when thieves try to drive your equipment offsite and as a recovery tool to locate stolen machines.” Geofencing systems developed by asset management solutions companies such as Austin, Texas-based Rastrac also offer theft-prevention solutions. These systems can alert when a GPS-tagged piece of equipment leaves the construction site. The GPS tag helps the user locate and identify the equipment quickly. “Fleet tracking for construction equipment is a powerful anti-theft tool that can help improve your odds of recovering stolen equipment intact,” said Rastrac. Security cameras that are highly visible act as a strong deterrent to would-be thieves at your construction site. Solar-powered units with battery backups allow for placement wherever they’re needed. “You typically have the option to record continuous video or take time-lapse photos at scheduled intervals,” according to iSqFt’s blog on high-tech ways to control construction site theft. Motion detection and infrared sensors, which measure changes in thermal activity, can be used to activate idle cameras and begin recording. Security cameras can be equipped with Wi-Fi or cellular communication to transmit the video or images for cloud storage or live monitoring through a web portal. With an internet-connected camera you also can get text alerts when its motion or infrared sensors have been activated. Deterrence Is Simple, But Effective The harder it is to access your site, the less likely thieves will target your equipment fleet. “For heavy equipment, wheel locks and other immobilization devices prevent them from being driven off the site or winched onto a trailer and hauled off,” iSqFt’s blog stated. Some equipment owners remain passive when it comes to theft-prevention, claiming “that’s what I have insurance for.” Shepherd said NER is working to change that mentality, reminding equipment owners that “Yes, you do have insurance for that, but it’ll affect you down the road with claims.” Practicing preventive measures rather than reacting after the equipment is stolen saves everybody in the long run. NER suggests heavy machinery owners watch for anything that looks out of place. Here are NER’s equipment crime warning signs: • Parked trucks that do not belong to the company, especially box vans, U-hauls and enclosed race-car hauler type trailers. • Vehicles parked in vacant lots adjoining closed industry businesses, especially with occupants loitering in the area. • Gates left open at shut-down industrial facilities or construction sites.

• Late-night or early-morning activity inside a yard or on a construction site. • Overloaded trucks and improperly secured equipment transported during downtime. NER also offers tips for deterring heavy construction equipment theft in the yard or on the job site: • Ensure alarms and lighting are all operating properly. • Consider that a high number of false alarms could be thieves testing your responsiveness; watch for vehicles “casing” your property. • Test cameras in daylight and after dark — Are you getting usable images of license plates, faces and vehicles? • Make sure fences and gates provide a complete barrier to adjoining businesses and vacant land. Walk your fence line to be sure nothing has been tampered with. • Conduct a security survey of the yard and buildings. Walk around the property to see if there are vulnerable points of access or cover. • Move highly targeted equipment into service bays or more secure areas of the yard. • Be sure equipment parking areas don’t provide cover to thieves. • Communicate with neighboring businesses to raise awareness of thefts in progress. Confirm that their staff has your emergency contact information. • Designate someone to check up on the facility at different times during a holiday or extended down time. • Don’t leave anything on a trailer. Secure trailers so thieves can’t use them to steal your equipment. Caterpillar dealer Warren Cat of Midland, Texas, believes it’s important to know what drives construction equipment theft. “Any piece of equipment that has a lucrative brand name, is relatively new, and can easily be loaded or driven off could be considered an easy target for theft at any given work site,” according to the company’s website. Here are other suggestions from Warren Cat: • Give each vehicle a recognizable indicator. Stamp or engrave identifiers such as names, symbols or digits on each piece of heavy equipment at your work site. Apply an identifier to each part that could be sold separately on the black market. • Keep records of all equipment. File the make, model, PIN, serial number and production and purchase dates of each unit or component part. Keep photo files of everything in your fleet for identification. • Take notice of equipment theft trends. Be especially protective of the types of items that are commonly targeted by thieves. • Secure your fleet from intrusion. Before the site shuts down each evening, have all the vehicles parked facing into a circle, with smaller pieces of equipment placed in the middle. • Keep employees up to date on corporate security practices. At the end of each shift, operators should log each machine used and park all machines securely. Each operator should also be aware of the unique identifiers on identical vehicles. “None of the systems and devices should be used as your sole means of preventing theft,” iSqFt noted. “A solid security plan should involve multiple layers of theft deterrents and measures.”  CEG

Kiewit Corp. has ‘topped off’ its regional headquarters in Lone Tree, Colo. as members of the construction crew signed the final beam. This campus for the Omaha, Neb.based engineering and construction firm will act as a hub for its 900 Colorado-based employees. Based in Omaha, Neb., Kiewit has been a big player in metro Denver construction. It was involved in the Union Station redevelopment and helped get construction of the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Aurora back on track. Currently, it is the main contractor on the $1.2 billion rebuild of Interstate 70 in Denver. Kiewit National Director of Preconstruction Chris Kelner said that Kiewit has added hundreds of employees in Colorado in the last year to meet demand, and he doesn't expect that to slow anytime soon. Kiewit announced it would pick Lone Tree for its future headquarters in early 2019, largely for its ability to attract and retain talent. The campus is located west of Interstate 25 at the Lincoln Avenue interchange, inside of the master-planned RidgeGate community. Phase 2 of the headquarters' construction is expected to break ground this summer. Kiewit has been involved in a number of large Colorado projects, including the I-25 expansion, Union Station transit improvements and Market Station. Kiewit, under the code name Project Brother, received $18.65 million worth of state job growth incentive tax credits last April in return for a pledge to create 850 jobs over the next eight years paying an average annual wage of $109,630. 

Deere Debuts Rotary Cutters, Mechanical Dozer Angle Blade John Deere updated its line of rotary cutter attachments with the new RX72 and RX84. These new models are designed for heavy-duty vegetation management applications, including property maintenance and right-of-way clearing. The rotary cutter attachments are compatible on large-frame skid steer and compact track loaders, such as the 330G through the 333G, and they are equipped with high-flow hydraulics and a severe-duty door. “These new attachments offer reliable solutions to landscapers, agricultural producers and municipal contractors that depend on John Deere equipment for land clearing or vegetation management,” said Jessica Hill, program manager, global attachments, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “The new models are designed to help our customers get the most of their investment by delivering greater performance and increased efficiency when clearing tough brush and hardwood.” The new rotary cutters offer a robust

Both the RX72 and RX84 include motors with a direct drive bearing for higher efficiency and extended durability, while an optimized blade carrier design allows for a fast startup and recovery time. Features include three blades made of thick forged AR400 steel measuring 0.625 in. (1.5 cm), that provide an aggressive cut and long wear life. A pressure gauge is easily visible to monitor blade load for optimal cutter performance. As with any brush-clearing application, safety is paramount. Each model incorporates a retractable forward shield that rolls back to expose the blades to

larger-diameter trees. Once material is cleared, the forward shield closes to process material more efficiently and to reduce the risk of flying debris with its heavy chain curtain. Hydraulic valving stops the blades from spinning within seconds of shutdown, providing operators and those on the job site with an additional safety feature. Each model uses a skid steer coupler attachment interface to mount to the carrier. The RX72 and RX84 cutters are powered using 0.5-in. (1.3-cm) auxiliary hydraulic quick connectors, while the RX84 also uses a 0.375-in. (.95-cm) case drain quick coupler, to help the machine with cooling and prevent damage. Hydraulic specifications include a 30 to 45 gpm (114 to 170 Lpm) flow range with a 4,000 psi (28,000 kPa) maximum operating pressure. The RX72 weighs 1,810 lbs. (820 kg), and the RX84 weighs 2,260 lbs. (1,025 kg), so rear counterweight will improve the stability of the skid steer or compact track loader. The RX72 and RX84 have cutting widths of 72 in. (183 cm) and 84 in. (213 cm), respectively.

Mechanical Angle Blades for Dozers Developed based on customer feedback, John Deere now manufactures the mechanical angle blade for the 950K and 1050K crawler dozers. The John Deere-designed mechanical angle blade can be manually angled side to side, making it ideal for a variety of jobs, including backfilling, rough grading and general earthmoving. “The new mechanical angle blades were designed based on feedback from contractors in the pipeline industry,” said Nathan Horstman, product marketing manager, crawler dozers, John Deere Construction & Forestry. “Understanding the crippling impact downtime can have, we designed the John Deere mechanical blade to be stronger and more durable. From performance improvements to features that provide better serviceability, our customers can be confident when running a machine equipped with the new blade option.” The productivity-boosting three-position adjustable blade can be configured using the provided pin points on the push beams. Redesigned with an improved blade profile, the new mechanical angle blade provides better shedding of material and reduces the likelihood of blade plugging. The blade width and height have been optimized for the best performance on the Deere dozers. The approach angle on the 950K and 1050K blades has been increased 29 percent versus the previous offering. Additionally, changes to the hydraulic hose routing to the blade offer better protection against damage. The blade weight was reduced and reinvested in the C-frame, resulting in better overall weight distribution for a more balanced machine and improved durability. The Deere-designed mechanical angle blade features bushed angle pins. The angle pins are hardened and, when coupled with the heavy-duty hardened bushings in the Cframe, provide better long-term serviceability, according to the manufacturer. Atlas Copco Adds Vacuum Prime Centrifugal Pumps Atlas Copco Power Technique has introduced two high-flow pumps, the PAS 100 HFS T4F and PAS 150 HFS T4F vacuum prime centrifugal pumps to the market. These pumps offer several features and are efficient, extremely versatile equipment suitable for many industries, including construction, general dewatering and emergency applications, such as flood cleanup. The high efficient pump wet end is equipped with a diaphragm vacuum pump and a separator, which enables trouble free operation and fast priming process. Additionally, the semi-open impeller allows the PAS HFS range to be suitable for pumping liquid with solids in suspension. The pumps can handle solids up to 3 in. The PAS 100 and PAS 150 are easily maintained with a hinged cover for direct access to the impeller and pump housing. The wear plate also is easily replaceable. The required time to access the impeller and wear

plate can be reduced down to 3 minutes, which results in a higher uptime and machine utilization, according to the manufacturer. Both pump variants come with a road certified trailer and sound proof enclosure, making it versatile in handling and application selection. PAS 100 HFS T4F Vacuum Prime Pump This 4-in. pump produces a maximum flow of 1,230 gpm per minute and a maximum pressure of 164 ft. of head (ft). The selected engine is rated to 49 hp. PAS 150 HFS T4F Vacuum Prime Pump This 6-in. pump produces a maximum flow of 2,250 gpm and a maximum pressure of 167 ft. The selected engine is rated to 74 hp. More than 6,800 people from 55 countries registered to bid in the two-day Las Vegas sale (March 12 to 13) — setting a new Las Vegas site record — this included more than 5,800 online bidders. NTEA Marks Its 20th Anniversary With Work Truck Show

he National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) marked the 20th anniversary of its annual Work Truck Show. Held March 3 to 6 at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind., it is North America’s largest work truck event. The show encompassed more than 500,000 sq. ft. of exhibit hall space and featured more than 500 companies presenting the latest trucks, from Classes 1 to 8, and including chassis and bodies, as well as vans, components, accessories and services geared toward all aspects with the work truck industry. The show is noted as the work truck industry’s key occasion to debut new products and this

year’s Work Truck Show was no exception with new product introductions ranging from complete trucks to OEM chassis, vehicle components and support technologies and equipment. A common theme for many of the new product introductions focused on big equipment performance features packed into a smaller equipment packages. The association’s annual meeting was held March 5 and featured U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley as the keynote speaker. At ConExpo 2020, U.S. buyer attendance increased 8 percent from the 2017 show, and total buyer attendance improved by almost 5 percent.

Kubota introduced the SCL 1000 stand-on track loader, its smallest loader to date. The machine is designed to work in tight spaces and has a total width of only 36-in.

The SANY exhibit was a must-see at ConExpo. A vast array of new product offerings and a crowd pleasing show of mini-excavators “artistically contorted” by a group of highly skilled machine operators.
