Over time, as bridges get used by heavy transport,theyneedreplacing,andforsucha historicrailwaybridgeaspecialreplacement was designed which was to be carried out with minimal disruption to the rail network.

The new Oder Bridge is an innovation — a network arch bridge with carbon hangers: its sleek, light and soft design, a fitting symbol of innovation, openness and connection.

The 2,300 ton, 590 ft. long bridge will help to increase line capacity and shorten travel times by allowing a maximum permissible speed of 75 mph.

Mammoet has plenty of experience in large-scale bridge launches, and the specialist heavy-lift equipment to move them as complete structures. This allows parallel work in the preparation phase and saves time.

This is why it was approached to install the bridge safely and with minimum disruption.

Depth-Defying Challenge

ThebridgewasassembledontheGerman side of the Oder and then moved, by Mammoet, as a whole structure across the river to its final installation position.

Koen Brouwers, project manager at Mammoet, said, “Most bridges are floated into place using a combination of Mammoet self-propelled modular transporters [SPMTs], launching plates and a pontoon. However, the use of a pontoon here was not possible due to the shallow, and changing, water levels of the river. Using a large crane, capable of positioning loads with a long reach,wasalsonotfeasibleduetotheweight and length of the bridge.”

Mammoet’s engineers therefore came up with a solution that avoided the use of both crane and pontoon. This solution allowed work to happen regardless of the water level and made the operation more flexible, safer and efficient.

After first jacking the bridge to 6.5 ft. and positioning the SPMTs underneath, it was transported to the edge of the river where it was positioned over the first of five temporary supports.

The bridge was then launched using a combinationofspeciallydesignedlaunching plates and strand jacks that pulled the structure horizontally until it reached the next temporary support.

This process continued until the bridge reached the opposite side of the river. The SPMTs on the rear of the bridge were then removed and skid shoes were installed to slide the bridge into its final position.

Atthispoint,thebridgewastakenoverby climbing jacks, which allowed the temporary supports to be removed and the bridge tobelowereddowntoitsfinalrestingheight. Around 45 truckloads of specialist heavy equipment were mobilized for this project, including 96 axle lines of SPMTs, 26 launching plates, 10 climbing jacks and 2 strand jacks.

Plate Spinning

One of the key considerations for any bridgelaunchistheriskofdeformationofits structure during the launch process, and this posed a big challenge for the engineering team.

To solve this, temporary supports with hydraulic cylinders were used at the quay

edges and in the water, as well as modified launching plates.

Jack van der Vloet, lead engineer at Mammoet, said, “It’s a big bridge and wind loads had to be considered. It has a large deflection, so the launching plates had to be modified. Typically, they swivel in two directions; however, in this case they had to swivel 360 degrees.This always gave us full control of the operation.”

The entire skidding equipment had to be customized to execute the operation technically. This meant that all launching plates were retrofitted with a spherical bearing so that they could be moved in all directions. During the launch the weight on each tower and cylinder was controlled to ensure a smooth and safe operation.

Due to the bridge’s size, all the available launching plates that Mammoet Europe had in stock had to be used.This was a technical and logistical challenge, but one easily handled thanks to its size and network.

New Method for Success

Infrastructure projects are crucial to support growing populations and economies, and as cities get busier these projects become more challenging.

For the first time, two Skanska construction veterans have concurrently received the highest honors in civil construction for their dedication and expertise in construction.

Notable achievements include managing SEM caverns, utility-infested open cuts, frozen ground stabilization projects and tunnels in diverse terrains using conventional methods and TBMs.

Almeraris’international experience ranges from a special assignment in the remote Indian Himalayas on the Naptha Jhakri 1600-megawatt Dam/Tunnel project in 1994 to being a key team member on multiple projects throughout the UK, Norway, and Sweden with Skanska’s international Underground group.

Beyond his technical prowess, Almeraris is passionate about mentoring young engineers entering the heavy civil industry. He actively supports initiatives such as the Moles outreach, bringing college students into the world of heavy civil construction. In 2021, he served as the president of the Moles and has been a member since 1989. He received the Underground Construction Association’s Outstanding

ConstructionAssociations Support 22 States Challenging New Federal Rule

The American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) and the Associated General Contractors ofAmerica (AGC) jointly filed amicus briefs in support of 22 states challenging the Biden Administration’s new Greenhouse gas performance measure for state transportation departments.

The two associations noted the new rule is likely to divert resources from vital new infrastructure projects and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)lacksthestatutoryauthority to impose the measure.

The briefs, which were filed on Feb. 16 in Federal District Courts in Kentucky and Texas, back state challenges to a new Greenhouse gas (GHG) performance measure regulationthatwasimposedDec.7 by FHWA.

While FHWA claims states won’t face explicit penalties, AGC and ARTBA noted concerns of plaintiff states that mandating GHG reductions will limit the types of projects they can undertake in the future. The Greenhouse gas rule requires state transportation departments to set and report on two- and four-year statewide emissions reduction targets as part of the planning process for highway and bridge projects. States must set initialtargetsbyspringofthisyear,withsubsequenttargetsdue byOct.1,2026.Thosestatesfailingtomeetthesegoalsmust

Attorneys general from 21 states sued FHWA Dec. 22 in Kentucky Federal District Court, while Texas sued separately Dec. 19.

“Had Congress intended to grant FHWA authority to enact this mandate, they would have included it in the legislation,” said Dave Bauer, ARTBA’s presidentandCEO.“Webelieve that unless there is a clear congressional directive, states should — and can — make these types of policy decisions themselves.”

“This new mandate puts pressure on state officials to shift funding away from needed new infrastructure projects to lower priority projects so their reports can look better,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, chief executive officer of the Associated General Contractors ofAmerica. “The president andhisteamdon’thavetheauthoritytocreatemeasuresthat Congress specifically reviewed and rejected.”

“When we started out, we were making compact containerized equipment that could inexpensively be shipped to market,” he said. “We now offer the full range of crushing, screening, mobile conveying and washing products for processing aggregate materials. In terms of screening, we have finishing screens, scalping screens and trommel screens, totaling 11 different models. We also offer a mobile tracked jawcrusher,impactcrusher,andthesoon-to-be-releasedC12 cone crusher.”

In addition, Anaconda’s product lineup includes three modelseachofitsmobilefeeding,trackedandwheeledconveyors.

And the equipment maker is not content to sit back and admireitscurrentstableofmachineryasplansareunderway to unveil the newAnaconda cone crusher model in the next several months, McCann said.

“Our new C12/C12R cone crusher is one that is able to recirculate materials back into the feeder again,” he said.

“We are working with our engineeringteamontryingtogetabig product launch for it set up in the first half of 2024.”

Anaconda Offers Resourceful Machines, Expert Support

McCann noted that customers also are drawn to Anaconda equipment once they learn the manufacturer considers itself as a complete and attentive product, service and support company.

“We understand that when you use our equipment at a quarry, for instance, or any application where tons of rock anddirtarethrownatthemachineforseveralhourseachday, that maintenance will be required to keep the machine operating and eliminate the chance of downtime,” he said. “But the thing to remember is that Anaconda and our dealer network will always back you up with expert service, parts and technical support.

“To me, that would be the main reason to choose Anaconda equipment,” he added.

In 2019, Anaconda received a major boost when it was acquired by the McLanahan Corp., based in Hollidaysburg, Pa., just outside Pittsburgh. The almost 200-year-old multiindustry manufacturer did so just as Anaconda was launching its crushing lines, McCann said, but as the larger company had decades working in the aggregates industry, it brought Anaconda needed experience to that product segment.

In fact, the chambers — or boxes — found inAnaconda’s jaw and impact crushers, he said, are sourced through McLanahan.

“Those chambers are tried and trusted stationary units throughout the industry,” according to McCann. “I think

there are 7,000 jaws and 1,500 impactors working in North America in static applications. What we did was take that concept and put it into a tracked solution.”

He noted that McLanahan focuses much of its time manufacturing major static and washing plants, but beyond aggregates, it also makes an extensive list of other equipment, including those that handle coal, recycle C&D and produce concrete.

Manufacturer Working to Expand United StatesÊ Dealership Base

As a business development professional for Anaconda, a big part of McCann’s job is to create long-standing relationships with distributors like Sound Heavy Machinery, located near the southeast North Carolina coast.

“TheywereworkingwithAnacondabeforeIcameaboard with the company — I would say seven or eight years at least,” he said. “Sound Heavy does a fantastic job in providing outstanding support to customers who use Anaconda products by keeping our parts on its shelves. The dealership also has talented people to commission our equipment to make sure they properly run for customers and there is little to no downtime. If something does go wrong, they see to it that our machine is up and running in a day, which is essential to the customer.”

One ofAnaconda’s key goals over the next few years, he said,willbetocontinueexpandingitsdealerbaseinAmerica because there are many states where the manufacturer does not currently have coverage.

Most of its dealers are found in the eastern half of the country, “but we want to drive into areas where we don’t have any representation, specifically in the western U.S.,” McCann said.

Exclusive Transparent Bucket Technology

The exclusive transparent bucket technology is an innovative construction equipment technology that helps minimize blind spots for wheel loader operators when the bucket is raised, the manufacturer said.

“Thetransparentbuckettechnologyoffers a supplemental view from a monitor inside the wheel loader cab,” said Zak. “The system has two cameras with protective guarding, one mounted high on the cab and one mounted low on the axle on the front of the machine. The system’s processor automatically adjusts the camera inputs into a single image that makes the bucket appear transparent on an in-cab monitor.” With an unobstructed view in front of the

wheel loader bucket, operators can see objects such as large rocks, construction materials, obstacles and even people in front of the machine — objects that would otherwise be obstructed from view by the bucket. Since operators can “see through” the wheel loader bucket, it helps them efficiently dig into and precisely place material where it needs to go. This technology helps maximize productivity on the most challenging job sites.

According to a report published in March 2023 by the Center for Construction Research and Training, 17 percent of fatal injuries in construction from 2011 to 2021 were“struckby”fatalities.Thistypeoffatality is defined as an “injury in which a person is struck by a vehicle, object or equipment.”

New technology from DEVELON can potentially help reduce these fatalities with increased operator visibility to the job site.

Around View Monitor Camera System

For additional visibility and safety on job sites, DEVELON -7 Series wheel loaders have an AVM camera system. Three cameras and several sensors are mounted on the rear of the wheel loader, giving operators up to 270 degrees of enhanced visibility.

“Ifthere’sanobjecteightto12feetbehind the machine, a flashing green caution box will appear, notifying the wheel loader operator,” said Zak. “A yellow caution box will show up if the object is four to eight feet and a red triangle and red border notification if the object is closer than four feet.”

When wheel loader operators combine the AVM camera system, floor-to-ceiling sidecabwindowsandthetransparentbucket technology, they have nearly 360 degrees of visibility. This level of visibility can help reduce the possibility of the operator hitting another object on a busy job site.

Other Smart Technologies

The 2023 -7 Series wheel loaders are designed with other smart technology features that owners and operators can use to make meaningful improvements to the productivity of their operations.

ï DEVELON Fleet Management telematics system makes it easy for owners to monitor their fleet and manage maintenance to reduce operating costs. Using a smartphone, tablet or computer, owners can check machine location, operating hours, fuel usage, engine idle versus work time, error codes, engine and hydraulic oil temperature and various other data points.

ï SituationAwareness Technology (SAT) automatically monitors the machine’s activity and adjusts the wheel loader engine’s output to match real-time requirements of the hydraulic system and drivetrain.

ï Smart Guidance System analyzes operator driving habits and provides tips during operation on the Smart Touch display to improve their efficiency.

ï Load Isolation System (LIS) improves wheel loader stability while moving, which can reduce cycle times, increase productivity and boost fuel efficiency.

ï Smart Load weighing system tells the operator the weight of material in the bucket. All menus and settings are integrated into the Smart

screen.

Silvas Continue to Keep Califorina Business FamilyAffair

busy as they process roughly 10,000 tons of recyclables per month. There are drive-thru facilities for aluminum cans (CA CRV) and plastics at each location, as they “strive to bring a world of cleanliness that is environmentally friendly for everyone that visits the facilities,” according to Stan Jr.

A&S is a family owned and operated business in the truest sense. Behind Stan Jr. is the next generation of Silvas, including StanleySilvaIII,StanJr.’sniece—Shealynn Bianchi—andStanleySilvaIV.StanJr.and his sister, Danette Silva, currently run the business on a day-to-day basis since the senior Silva’s passing 16 years ago.

Don’t let the familial nature of the business fool you. The company is prospering under a strategic and aggressive growth plan put in place in the early 2000’s.

Diversification, Ingenuity

Five ofA&S’eight facilities are full scrap recycling and demolition operations. The others serve as feeders for the larger sites.

Mostpeoplewouldnotknowtheextentof recycling that takes place on the property becauseofhowthingsarespreadout,organized and clean, according to Stan Jr. He said the company takes pride not only in keeping the grounds clean and organized, but also in taking diligent care of the huge fleet of equipment the company has assembled over the years.

“It’s hard to keep things clean and organized, I mean, we are dealing with everyone’s junk,” Stan Jr. said. “We try to be efficient in whatwedoandhaveprideinourequipment.

“If you don’t take care of the equipment, your employees won’t respect that piece of equipment and they won’t respect you for what you are doing,” Stan Jr. added. “So it’s like a double-edged sword. I work hard on keeping them painted, keeping windshields in place, fenders, counterweights painted, etc. because then it helps employee have more pride in what they’re doing.”

Along with the recycling facilities and maintenanceoperation,truckinghasbecome integral to the company’s success and longterm strategy. Not only does the company haul its own scrap metal in to the various facilities and haul the processed materials out to its customers, it offers hauling as a service as well.

“It’s important that we have a company thatisalsoforhire,wedoalotofheavyhaul … we like to be diversified to do everything and anything that we can to be a self-efficient company,” Stan Jr. said.

Overtheyears,theSilva’shavedeveloped onsite fabrication facilities to answer unique equipment challenges they face.

“I’ve designed all of our own dumps [trailers], all of our own roll-off trailers,”

Stan Jr. said. “It’s always about being light and efficient. I built my first in-dump in 1989 and they have built about 30 more since and have a few others in process. It is very important to me to be self-reliant; I neverwanttoseeoneofmypiecesofequipment behind a tow truck.”

Resisting Rental Trend

Finding the right equipment partner has been vital to A&S’ success, said Silva, and 75 percent of its equipment has been purchased from Bejac Corporation over the last 12 years.

“We try not to rent equipment and if we need a piece of equipment, we go and buy it or we have it,” he said.

Silva’s operations utilize Link-Belt and Liebherr machines almost exclusively for their lifting, demolition and material handling needs. Both brands are supplied by Bejac.

“We started buying Link-Belt products in the early 90s and then bought our first Liehberrmaterialhandlerin2001.Sincethat time, we have purchased approximately 25 more Liebherr machines and approximately 30 additional Link-Belt excavators and material handlers,” Silva said.

Both lines of equipment are important to his operation and fill unique needs in the recycling process, Silva said.

“We really like the Liebherr material handler for its hydraulics and lifting abilities,” he said. “Our first Link-Belt machine was a 2700 excavator back in 1991. We still buy the 160 model today and really like light weight and fuel efficiency of the machine. Plus, we can haul it with no permit.”

For heavier recycling needs, Silva said he prefers the LH30 material handler from Liebherr for its dependability. They also use Liebherr’s compact 924 with the Genesis Sheer for their daily material sorting needs.

StanJr.addedthathe“lovesworkingwith Bejac and our rep, Mike [Smith], mostly for the convenience and the ability to work with

a local company that can service our equipment. I have a great relationship with Bejac. Theyfollowthroughwithwhattheysaythey are going to do.”

Symbiotic relationships like this are important between the dealer and the customer, according to Smith.

“Silva has a direct line to Robert Cycon, chief operating officer of Bejac, and Ron Barlet, president and CEO of Bejac,” Smith said.

“It’s not like we’re doing business, it’s moreliketakingcareofthem,”Smithadded. “He happens to buy equipment from us and wetakecareofhim.That’sthewayitshould be. We help each other out.”

Silva agreed, “It’s not a mentality of what have you done for me lately, it’s a case of what we can do together to make each other stronger.”

In addition to handlers and excavators, A&S purchases dozers and wheel loaders

from Bejac, Smith said.

Family Values

Stan Jr. reflected on his dad and the lessons he learned, one of which was, “he taughtmehowtoworkwithpeopleandhow to be a part of their companies, because it makesusallstronger,that’sahugeundertaking for us, as well as Bejac to have that kind of relationship.”

Hevalueslong-termrelationshipswithhis employees, too. Alfonso Guttierez has been with the company for 46 years; he also has four brothers that have been there for more than 30 years.

“Alfonso watched me grow up in the company,” Stan Jr. said. “I used to sit on his lap,mysonsatonanotherguys’lapandnow I’vegotagrandsondoingthesamething.So not only are we family oriented and customer related, but we partner with companies like Bejac. It’s these long, long relationships that make us stronger.”

The Castroville headquarters started out on three acres and has grown to 26 acres today. They plan to continue growing and are buying other facilities.

“This is all part of the growth plan and so between my sisters, myself and my son, we have a pretty good direction because we had aprettygoodteacher,”StanJr.said,referring to his dad.

The Silva’s are looking forward to the future, future generations and additional locationsastheneedforcleanrecyclingcontinues to grow.

The Taylor Group of Louisville, Miss., announced the acquisition of 85 percent of the shares of CVS Ferrari (CVS) from NEIP III and BP.

Volvo Trucks North America announced that its independent authorized dealer VanguardTruck Centers, a full-service commercial truck dealer group and leasing operation, acquired Nacarato Truck Centers to become one of Volvo Trucks’ largest dealer groups in NorthAmerica.

XL Guardian 110 HDG Trailer Simplifies Hauling Iron

The XL Guardian 110 HDG trailer from XL Specialized Trailers, a manufacturer of heavy haul and specialized trailers, is a standardized construction trailer that is readily available at dealer locations.

Each aspect of this low-profile, hydraulic detachable gooseneck lowboy was designed with the user in mind, and it’s made to simplify the process of hauling construction equipment.

Built to last, users can be confident in the Guardian’s longevity as they haul load after load, the manufacturer said. The Guardian trailer is 53 ft. long and has a capacity rating of 110,000 lbs. in 12 ft. concentrated.

The low-profile gooseneck design provides weight savings and versatility, allowing scrapers to load over the top. It features a relief cutout, giving truck fenders plenty of clearance, and two removable kingpin settings, which add flexibility across various truck setups. On the neck, a rotating worklightilluminatestheareaforaddedsafetyandvisibility when loading.

The gooseneck uses hydraulics to detach for loading and unloading efficiently — and easily reconnects after. The main bed offers a 22-in. loaded deck height. Operators can adjust the height of the deck for diverse loads with a 5-position variable ride height in the neck and manual ride height in the rear.

Thetrailer’s26-ft.-long,8-ft.-6-in.-widemaindeckisconstructed with a fully welded I-beam design, using 100K flanges and 80K webs, as well as upper-flange reinforcement. The rugged, raised apitong decking is built to last, while a toolbox located in the front provides a place to store chains and other materials.

Heavy-dutyswing-outoutriggersadd12in.ofdeckwidth oneachsideforflexibilityinthesizeofloads.Theoutriggers swingtothemiddleofthedeck,makingastrongdouble-outrigger point in the center of the deck, where it is needed

most. A heavy-duty front pull-out outrigger eliminates the need to stow and carry loose outriggers.

In the rear of the main deck, the recessed cross-members make a bucket well. Combined with the open boom trough design in the wheel area, this design provides a safe solution for transporting excavators at a low height. With D-rings placed throughout the rear of the deck, securement is easier and more efficient than ever, the manufacturer said.

This trailer offers great versatility with its range of axle options. The Guardian is a three-axle trailer that can be run by itself or with an added flip axle, a spreader bar and flip, a single-axle power booster or a hydraulic flip axle.

IEDAAnnual Meeting,Auction Soars Past Its Own Records

The February Annual Meeting of the Independent Equipment Dealers Association’s theme was “Soar in 24” and that was on full display at the three-day conference in Kissimmee, Fla., Feb. 16-18.

Attendance was nearly 20 percent higher, with approximately 200 paid attendees, and registered golfers for the annual tournament nearly doubled over 2023’s players. Also, IEDA’s Second Annual Live and Online Auction raised more than $32,000 for the IEDA Foundation’s technician scholarship fund, more than triple the proceeds from donated prizes at the first auction in 2023.

A recently-added kickoff feature for the annual meeting, the IEDA Auction was held Feb. 16, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., under a huge white tent on the 100-ft.-long front lawn of the ReunionResortandGolfClub––themeeting has convened at the Reunion property for three consecutive years.

Bryan Auction, owned by IEDA Board Member Doug Bryan, conducted the equipmentauctionfeaturingmorethan400individual lots of all IEDA-member-consigned equipment, trucks, attachments, vehicles and tools. More than 13,000 registered online bidders participated, and more than 200 people attended the family-friendly event in person. Bryan Auction provided a catered Southern lunch buffet and a cash bar to give attendees a fun and laid-back auction networking experience reminiscent of the ’90s and earlier.

Theprimaryreasontheauctionwaslaunched in 2023 was to raise money for the IEDA Foundation, which, since 2022, has awarded 10 merit scholarships of $5,000 each to students enrolled in post-secondary heavy equipment programstobecomequalifieddieseltechnicians.
