Caltrans Doubles Highway’s Capacity
By Irwin Rapoport CEG CORRESPONDENT
In an effort to improve the safety, capacity, operation and route continuity on State Route 14 in Kern County, the California Department of Transportation’s (Caltrans) Freeman Gulch Widening Project (FGWP) is converting the existing two-lane conventional highway into a four-lane divided controlled access expressway.
The project to widen 16.4 mi. of road, which could carry a cost of up to $170 million, has been divided into three segments, with the first already completed by Granite Construction.
This project will close the final two-lane gap on SR 14 between Mojave and the junction with U.S. 395, according to the project web page. Planning for Segment 2, which would widen approximately 6.2 mi. from 4.8 mi. south to 0.5 mi. north of SR 178 west, is ongoing.
“Since 1955, Caltrans, in cooperation with its local transportation partner, has worked to four lane the U.S. Highway 395 and State Route 14 corridor” said District 9 Director Brent Green. “This project is yet another important milestone in our goal to achieve this vision.”

Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality
Concrete Industry Is Working Toward Carbon Elimination
By Lucy Perry CEG CORRESPONDENT
Marking a year of progress toward its goal of carbon neutrality, the Portland Cement Association (PCA) last fall noted the multiple pilot projects across the United States that have showcased emerging technologies to capture and reuse or store carbon. Those projects are tools to gauge success as the industry moves toward eliminating all carbon in concrete by the year 2050.
“I’m proud that our industry is taking this on,” said Mike Ireland, president and CEO of PCA. “Together we’ve made progress on a bold, yet achievable pathsee CARBON page 42

Well-Traveled ContractorAchieves Stellar Growth in Colo.
Technological innovation’s main goal is to help people and businesses to do their work more efficiently, more affordably and to generally make their lives easier. A business owner found that out and more three years ago when he attended ConExpo, after a friend gave him a first-class airline ticket and his pass to the show.
Sergeant & Sons Septic and Excavating is a family-owned company that serves the western slope region of Colorado and beyond. The company, which was founded in 2015 by Ron Sergeant in Southington, Ohio, and relocated to the Plateau Valley of Colorado in 2022, specializes in all types of septic work, residential and commercial site work, commercial mulching and concrete work.
Ron Sergeant has had a long and interesting path to where he is today, starting out working for his father’s excavation business in northern Michigan until he and his wife, Meghan, decided to leave northern Michigan for a warmer climate, namely Raleigh, N.C., where he expanded his skills in the construction trades and worked his way into the position of superintendent and project manager for a local construction firm.
After a period of time, Sergeant found that the southern climate was a little more hostile than he anticipated, and he and Meghan decided to return home to a newly appreciated Michigan climate.
Sergeant thought that he would be returning home to the family business, but the dynamics there had changed and there really wasn’t going to be a place there for him. At that time, there were not a lot of other opportunities in that part of Michigan and Sergeant started a journey of extensive travel working for significant construction companies outside of the Michigan area, while Meghan stayed home and held down the fort.
His first experience was working in Vermont cleaning up after hurricane Irene. From there, he transitioned to working for a construction company in Maine that specialized in putting up cell phone towers all over New England. It was good work, but the cost of living, and in particular housing, was so high, they did not feel comfortable moving the family to the New England market.
At one point, the company sent him to work on a major
project in New Jersey and the worst thing that could possibly happen to a guy working thousands of miles from home for a construction company happened — his employer went belly up. Fortunately, they were working as a subcontractor to another major contractor and that contractor liked what they had seen in Sergeant’s work and immediately brought him on board to keep the project moving. It was the right pay and the right stability that he was looking for. Sergeant had his family pack up the household and make the move from Michigan to New Jersey, where they stayed for six years.
After six years, the company transferred Sergeant to Ohio in a position that required extensive travel, lots of time away from the family. In 2015, he decided he had enough, and he made a life altering decision — he purchased an excavator, a dump truck and a trailer and started his own construction business.
Through luck and a relationship that he had with a local mortgage broker, Sergeant found out that there was a booming need in the state of Ohio for contractors who had the skills to install properly engineered septic systems. In Ohio, before any house is sold, among other things, there is a test of the septic system. If it fails, which is not uncommon, money is put into an escrow and a fully engineered septic system must be installed immediately after the closing. This pointed the way to Sergeant starting a construction firm that specialized in septic system installations.
From 2016 to 2022, Sergeant & Sons Septic and Excavating installed approximately 400 septic systems. As that business grew, along with its equipment fleet, it started digging basements. In the first three years, the company experienced almost uncontrolled growth.
In 2020, the business was continuing to grow at an amazing rate, but the equipment inventory was becoming burdensome. A tremendous investment had been made in technology, including GPS and tilt rotators for a number of the excavators. The debt load was getting heavier, and Sergeant was not sure that all of it was giving him the return on investment that he was looking for.
According to Sergeant, at about that time, he took the family on one of those “once in a lifetime” vacations.

Sonsray Machinery Hosts Case’s Minotaur Roadshow
Sonsray Machinery hosted the Case Groundbreaker Minotaur Roadshow on Feb. 2 at its Phoenix, Ariz., location. This was the company’s fifth roadshow, following previous stops at four other Sonsray locations beginning with the Reno location and moving on to Sacramento, Los Angeles and N. Las Vegas before arriving in Phoenix.
Sonsray’s customers from the Phoenix and Tucson market areas were invited for a barbecue lunch and the chance to experience the power and precision of the Case Minotaur DL compact dozer loader, the new product to the Case lineup.
As part of the introduction to the Case Minotaur, Mark Davis, Case sales specialist of Case Construction, did a walk around, explaining the features and benefits of the all new, industry-first, equipment category.
“It was built first and foremost to be a dozer, taking components of a full-size dozer that has a C frame except it’s in a compact design,” said Davis.
“It operates like a full-size dozer, but in a compact design with the heart of a dozer and the versatility of a loader,” added Davis. He emphasized that this is, “not just a CTL,”
but built to be a dozer first “offering the best with power, precision and productivity.” It is incredibly versatile as it can be used for road cleanup, road trimming, house pads and dozing in very small intricate areas.
“You will feel the strength of the C frame because much of the beating will be absorbed by it,” said Davis. He also pointed out that this is a “truly specialized machine, with the addition of the industry exclusive, fully-integrated rear ripper system which provides easier dozing and earth-moving.”

Aggregate Production and Recycling Section
SBM Mineral Processing Set to Participate at ConExpo
For the fourth time in a row, SBM Mineral Processing will participate in ConExpo-Con/AGG in Las Vegas.
At its booth (Silver Lot, Booth S5600), the Austrian processing specialists will showcase the track-mounted JAWMAX 400 jaw crusher.
Like all “SBM Mobiles” — a total of 12 track-mounted JAWMAX jaw crushers and REMAX impact crushers between 49,000 and 353,000 lbs. operating weight (max. output 250 to 800 tph) — it features an advanced diesel-electric drive concepts, the manufacturer said.
A combination of fuel-efficient onboard diesel and performance-tuned generator powers the plants’ largely electrified crushing, screening and conveying equipment. Despite class-leading production capacities, this ensures massive savings in fuel consumption compared with diesel-hydraulic or only partially electric competitor plants due to low engine speeds.
Less hydraulics also means less risk of failure, lower maintenance and parts inventory costs, and thus higher availability with further optimized operating costs, reaching overall savings from 40 to 75 percent.
All SBM plants provide intelligent integrated “Crush Control” controls that noticeably relieve the operator in set-up and operation. Even inexperienced machine operators can safely operate and access the full performance of the JAWMAX and REMAX models, which can be equipped with numerous pre-screening and post-screening options, according to the manufacturer.
Crusher 4.0
In Las Vegas, SBM also will inform about the brand-new REMAX 600.
Also based on the SBM hybrid concept, the new 600 tph impact crusher will soon pave the way for “autonomous crushing,” the manufacturer said.
Extensive sensor technology, including cameras, constantly records and evaluates the feed material as well as intermediate and end products. In real time, those values reach centralized digital labs at SBM, where they are further analyzed. Necessary adjustments are then made on the “digital twin” of the working machine and retransmitted directly
to the REMAX 600 in the field.
The “Crusher 4.0” developed together with the University of Leoben was presented at the recent bauma trade show, and largescale field tests are currently being carried out in selected partner plants.
Dealers Wanted
SBM is planning a sustainable expansion of its sales and service activities in North and South America as well as in the Anglo-Pacific region. So far represented in Canada with its own spare parts center and two supra-regional dealers (AMACO Equipment, ProTrack Equipment), the focus is particularly on the U.S. market and there in all relevant industry segments, from raw materials to the construction industry to qualified recycling.
At the show, SBM intends to present new trade partners and is available for inquiries of interested companies. For more information, visit www.sbmmp.at

Advantages of High Reach
Excavators for Demo Jobs
In a world where safety and precision reign supreme, cranes and wrecking balls are things of the past. High reach excavators have taken up the mantle as the go-to machine for demolition projects due to three unique advantages.
Fast Assembly
A converted high reach excavator engineered by C.W. Machine Worx can be assembled in two hours without assistance from additional equipment. These converted high reach excavators also only require one operator to attach their fronts. The operator can align the converted excavator’s stub front with the high reach front directly from the shipping truck. Once aligned, hydraulic pins from the modular joint attach the stub front to the high reach front and the machine is ready to operate.
“We refer to our converted high reach excavators as ‘self-erecting machines’ because they put themselves together,” Company Wrench Fleet Product Support Trainer Ben Dowdy said.
“They use custom counterweights that can be both removed and placed on the carrier by the excavator itself. Other pieces of equipment are usually required to assemble machines of this size, but not with our converted high reach excavators.”
Precision
High reach excavators use shears and demolition processors to make exact cuts when demolishing structures. These materials fall from the structure in a contained area, making high reach excavators the ideal machine for highly populated, dense areas, according to the manufacturer.
Thislevelofcontrolbecomesevengreater when operators use a telescopic boom instead of a two or three-piece boom. With
the simple press of a button, operators can raise or lower the telescopic boom to make precise cuts across multiple working ranges. Two and three-piece booms require operators to add or remove sections of the boom to change working ranges.
“The learning curve for an operator is much easier with a telescopic boom,” Dowdy said. “When using a telescopic boom, you only have to worry about your boom and stick functions, like with a standard excavator. Three-piece booms feature a jib or mid-link function that allows the stick to bend up or down. This function is independent of the boom and stick functions so it adds another element to consider for operators. Ultimately, the decision between a telescopic boom and three-piece boom comes down to preference and working ranges.”
Industry Specific Features
The following high reach excavator designs can be installed to make the life of a demolition contractor easier:
• Tilted Cab — The cab tilts up to 45 degrees for increased operator visibility and comfort.
• Cab Interference Systems — This keeps the attachment from contacting the machine by slowing hydraulics when the operator reaches an unsafe working angle.
• Interchangeable Fronts — Converted high reach excavators are capable of using highreachfronts, longreachfronts, andstandard fronts. This allows a single excavator to perform projects that normally require multiple machines.
Company Wrench offers factory-built high reach excavators from Kobelco and converted high reach excavators from C.W. Machine Worx.

NAPAHands Out Sheldon G. Hayes Award to Kiewit South Co., TxDOT
At a ceremony during its 2023 annual meeting on Feb. 8, the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) recognized 2022 award winners and honorees who advance the asphalt pavement industry.
Sheldon G. Hayes Award
The Sheldon G. Hayes Award for excellence in construction of an asphalt pavement, bestowed annually since 1971, recognizes the country’s highest quality highway pavements.
Kiewit Infrastructure South Co. and the Texas Department of Transportation Amarillo District were named the winner of the 2022 Sheldon G. Hayes Award for their work on U.S. 287 in Armstrong County, Texas.
Finalists for the award were:
• Allan Myers VA Inc. and the Chesapeake Bay BridgeTunnel District for work on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel in Cape Charles, Va.;
• Delta Asphalt of Arkansas Inc. and the Arkansas Department of Transportation for work on I-55 in Mississippi County, Ark.; and
• Preferred Materials Inc., A CRH Company, and the Florida Department of Transportation for SR 93A (I-75) in Tampa, Fla.
All highway pavement projects using more than 50,000 tons of asphalt may apply for the Sheldon G. Hayes Award. The winner and finalists are determined through a two-year evaluation process.
Initially, the project must win a Quality in Construction (QIC) Award, which is determined by numerical scores given by independent pavement engineers based on how well the contractor met specifications and achieved density on the finished pavement. All pavements that meet a specified benchmark earn the QIC Award.
The year after a project wins a QICAward, it is eligible for consideration for the Sheldon G. Hayes Award. The topranked projects from each year are tested for smoothness, then visually inspected by an independent pavement consultant with many years of experience in the industry. In the 2022 cycle, the evaluator praised all the candidates for their high-quality construction practices, which resulted in smooth, safe, and durable pavements.
At NAPA’s 68th Annual Meeting in Miami Beach, Fla., the winner and finalists were recognized for their achievements.
“The asphalt pavement industry is committed to building quality pavements that deliver high performance and drivability to the public,” said James A. Mitchell, 2022 NAPA chairman of the board.
The award is named for Sheldon G. Hayes, a founder of NAPA and the association’s first chairman. Hayes spent his entire career striving for better construction techniques and improvements in the quality of asphalt pavements.

ARTBAJoins U.S. DOT ‘Call to Action’ Campaign On Safety
To reduce injuries and deaths on roadways, the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) has joined forces with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) in a new “Call to Action” campaign. The yearlong initiative calls on all stakeholders — not just drivers — to do their part to improve safety on the nation’s roads.
According to U.S. DOT, traffic deaths surged during the early days of the pandemic and remain high, with nearly 43,000 people killed in 2021. Highway workers are among the most vulnerable road users. The Bureau of Labor and Statics reports 2,222 workers lost their lives at road construction sites between 2003 and 2020— an average of 123 per year.
Since its 1902 founding, ARTBA has been dedicated to protecting the lives of highway workers through trainings, advocacy and awareness. As one of U.S. DOT’s
49 “Allies in Action,” the association will put special focus on the following areas:
• Positive Protection — reduces risk of intrusion into workspaces with devices that contain and redirect vehicles.
• Automated Speed Enforcement in Roadway Work Zones — a proven tool in changing driver behavior.
• Intrusion Prevention Guidance — standardizing tools and best practices that analyze, predict and protect areas of vulnerability on work sites.
• National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse (workzonesafety.org), one of the world’s largest online resources on the topic.
The Call to Action effort is part of U.S. DOT’s National Roadway Safety Strategy working toward zero deaths through “safer people, safer vehicles, safer speeds, safer roads and post-crash care.”

Case Explains Features, Benefits of Minotaur to Customers
Davis continued the tour inside the cab where the set-up has traditional paddle controls, different from a normal CTL. The Minotaur runs the same as other dozers. You can change the ISO pattern to dozer mode, where it remaps the entire hydraulic, electrical and engine specs to be just like a dozer.
The Minotaur is set up and ready for 2D and 3D; and you can put on your preferred guidance system including Leica, Trimble and TopCon.
According to Case representatives, “this frame was never intended to have wheels; it was always going to have a track. It has Case dozer DNA throughout the entire machine. Someone will get in it and say, ‘yes, this is a Case.’”
Davis encouraged customers to “jump in” and experience the familiar full-size dozer power in this unique compact design.
Customers were not disappointed. Kyle Pruitt, grounds manager of Amphitheater School District in Tucson, can see “using it for land clearing that is often required in the desert. It would be great to use in brush and cactus.”
Austin Halburtin of R.A.C.E. Grading was “impressed with the power and versatility the Minotaur offered” and added that, “it’s like a skid steer, but so much more and very powerful.” When he put the rippers down, he said he “couldn’t even tell that they were down.”
Adam Garcia of NG Equipment Sales thought that it was an, “amazing machine, different from any other machine, takes some getting used to, but nothing to describe how good it is.” Garcia can see that it would be “great for the contractor that does any type of demo and great for house pads.”
Nelson Garcia of NG Equipment Sales has developed a great partnership with Sonsray and Case.
“They don’t disappoint,” said Nelson Garcia. “[They] have been great to work with.”
Todd Nagy, regional sales director of Case, is excited to be
a part of this “new groundbreaking Case construction.”
The progress and development of new equipment is what Nagy found so exciting when he joined the Case team last fall. Nagy said he is, “excited for the public to see the launch of more than 30 new machines that will debut at ConExpo and the Case Minotaur is part of this new, exciting, and groundbreaking Case.”
It is groundbreaking because not only did Case introduce a new product, but it introduced a whole new product category, not just in the world of Case, but across the board with all manufacturers, said Nagy.
The Minotaur weighs in at more than 18,000 lbs., has
undergone 10,000 hours in testing and a powerful 114 HP. It boasts 29 patents and was in development for six years.
Sonsray is the largest dealer for Case on the West Coast, with 15 locations throughout California, Washington, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona. The Phoenix location also is the largest rental house location in the Sonsray brand, according to Southwest Regional Manager Mike Wright.
Shawni Young, marketing director of Sonsray, has been pleased with the great turnout at all of their locations for the roadshow. They currently have a Minotaur at each of their 16 locations.

Case’s slogan could be seen throughout the event displayed on flags and hats.
The R.A.C.E. Grading team looks on as Derrek Case, Case rep.; and Brad Hamrick, Sonsray rep.; talk about the easy accessibility of the engine for service. They also talk about options for the ripper that comes on the Minotaur. In really tight spaces, contractors can take off the ripper and do bolt-on weights instead.

ContractorMakesBigDiscoveryatHisFirst-EverConExpo
“We went to the Rockies for Christmas and basically fell in love,” he said. “We went skiing, snowmobiling, visited Yellowstone, we had the whole experience. Spent a bunch of money, had a ton of fun, and the whole way home all I could think about was ‘boy. how I loved that place.’ That was Christmas. A couple of months later I received a call from a friend of mine whose wife was having a baby and he had tickets to ConExpo and asked if I would like to use them. He said ‘I’ve got a first-class seat all bought and paid for and an extra ticket. Why don’t you go?’”
Sergeant took him up on the offer and headed to Las Vegas for his first visit to ConExpo.
“Just before I left, I sold off one of my newer compact excavators with a tilt rotator, so I was probably in a dangerous position,” he said. “I was entering ConExpo having just relieved myself of some debt. As I was walking around the show, I saw these little excavators that were acting like skid steers, but I thought they were excavators and they were sleek and pretty like spaceships and they were doing these amazing demonstrations. You could do just about any job that you wanted to do with these machines.
“As I watched these machines it struck me just how much money I could save with these machines just in trucking along — no longer trucking two machines to a job where I only need one. That also led me to thinking about scaling my business down just a little bit smaller. For me it was welcome
to the world of Mecalac.”
According to Sergeant, he walked into that show with no intentions of buying anything at all, he was “just looking.”
“It was Tuesday when I saw the machines. Wednesday, I just had to go back and look again. When I came back, they were doing more demonstrations and a good size crowd had gathered and I was dumfounded with what I saw. Absolutely randomly as I was standing there, I strike up a conversation with a man with a European accent who turns out to be the owner of Mecalac. I convinced him that if he would let me operate the machine for an hour to see if I can get comfortable on it and if it really does everything that it looks like it does, I will buy that machine Wednesday night.”
The man in question was Alexandre Marchetta, president and CEO of Mecalac. Marchetta instructed Sergeant to meet with one of Mecalac’s U.S. representatives there at the show, Ryan Carter, who coincidentally was from Sergeant’s home state of Michigan.
Carter arranged for Sergeant to come back to the show after hours and test drive the Mecalac 6MCR.
“After about an hour I knew right then and there that this machine, for the majority of the work that I do, was ideally suited to save me a lot of money. Projects were going to get done more efficiently using fewer pieces of equipment.
SERGEANT from page 8 see SERGEANT page 33
“I signed the papers purchasing the machine on Wednesday evening. Thursday morning the announcement was made that the show was shutting down early and every-
body needs to go home. The world is on edge, no one knows what’s going to happen next, and I haven’t even told my wife that I bought a new machine, yet. We are under a major travel advisory and can’t go anywhere. The machine is sitting in Massachusetts, and I’m supposed to go pick it up. So, my youngest son and I jump in my pickup truck with a trailer, and we head to Massachusetts. Hotels are closed so we are sleeping in the truck. The roads are just about deserted, there is no traffic anywhere.”
When the Sergeants returned home, new machine in tow, they learned that, fortunately for them, septic contractors have been deemed an essential business and they will be able to continue operations.
Sergeant put the Mecalac to work and discovered that it is virtually everything that he thought it would be — and more.
“It operated exceedingly well as an excavator. It was more versatile than any skid steer we had ever owned. In fact, I owned two skid steers and it wasn’t long before I got rid of them, and I let Mecalac know that we were thrilled with our machine. We were booked out six to eight months and the world had turned upside down. We had some employees decide that they did not want to work anymore under the circumstances. So, it was fortunate that we had a real time-saving machine on our hands because we really needed it.”
Where the Mecalac machine was really saving the company was in labor and in travel, Sergeant said.

The Mecalac 15MC tackles heavy excavation.
Due to its unique center of gravity and boom configuration, the 6MCR can lift a surprisingly heavy load.
It takes a little adjusting for the operator, but the bucket configuration can go into shovel mode.

Tracking Ongoing Evolution of Jobsite Connectivity
By Gregg Wartgom SPECIAL TO CEG
The vision is there.
Wouldn’t it be great if the entire job site — the general contractor, subs, designers, owners, equipment vendors and material suppliers — were all working in sync with the data that shifts with each condition change, progress report, change order, telematics warning, and machine inspection? That the right people got the right information at the right time to make informed decisions?
This one-dashboard vision is much, much easier said than done. The journey of one equipment manager illuminates the roadblocks.
Several years back, Langdon Mitchell, equipment division general manager of heavy civil contractor Morgan Corp., needed to have someone physically go machine-bymachine to update the software in his fleet.
The next big hurdle: each OEM had its own proprietary telematics portal. Like most contractors, Morgan has a mixed fleet and getting a unified fleet view from all the disparate systems was clunky and time-consuming, Mitchell said.
The Spartanburg, S.C., company is now using a third-party product that amalgamates the information from each brand in the company fleet in addition to its rental equipment.
“It’s become a single source of truth,” Mitchell said. “Beyond the raw telematics data, it’s allowing us to have tools to have actionable items.”
But more is needed, said Will Hipp, equipment data analyst of Morgan.
“Our eventual goal is to have all the project managers on board so they can see the machines on other job sites and identify any machines that have little utilization.”
That involves getting dynamic project schedules to match up with fleet needs so areas can be pinpointed where the company perhaps has too many or not enough machines.
“That is one of the biggest tasks we have: making sure that machines are in the right place at the right time,” Mitchell said.
Jobsite Connectivity Is Complex
This is one example of the information needs of one division of one company. Multiply those needs company wide, and then by all the entities with which that one company does business. Now add the industry at large and you get the idea of complexities involved.
“It sounds pretty simple, but when you take a look at the disparate systems GCs, subs, developers and agencies use, everybody has different formats and protocols so it’s extremely convoluted,” said Brian Juroff,
senior vice president of sales — positioning solutions at Topcon Positioning Group.
“While jobsite connectivity is easy to define, executing it is a completely different matter. Every contractor has a different soup mix of software for office, modeling, scanning, etc. It becomes a huge hurdle.”
“There’s an immense amount of data that’s created throughout the course of a construction project,” said Patrick Stevenson, vice president of product management and platform at Trimble. “Jobsite connectivity is making sure that information is transferring to the right individuals at the right moment in time so that they can more effectively do their job.”
What’s needed is a connective tissue that integrates fully with all pieces of information, creating a living, adaptive body of data.
“It’s providing a digital overview of what’s happening on the site so everyone can easily make decisions,” said Kenneth Veys, portfolio manager, uptime and connectivity at Volvo Construction Equipment.
Technology Has Given Jobsite Connectivity a Boost
Overall technology infrastructure advancements like 5G networks, LiDAR scanning, GNSS and edge computing is laying the foundation for jobsite connectivity.
“I’ve been on job sites in the past where at 2:30 in the afternoon you were going to lose connectivity based on satellite positioning,” said Lonnie Fritz, senior market professional at Caterpillar. “You could set your watch to it. GNSS alone has really driven improvement in accuracy and reliability.”
One of the biggest shifts is open architecture software so that data from different sources can be more easily integrated.
“That’s allowing a lot of contractors to embrace the concept of automating their processes,” Juroff said.
While jobs in more remote areas still face connectivity issues, the amount of data that can now be transmitted has grown exponentially in the world at-large.
And there’s a wealth of data that’s waiting
to be mined in a connected way, from machine telematics to design data to labor apps, said Jason Anetsberger, Komatsu’s director of customer solutions. Connected machines can now receive updated design data, report back their productivity and the shape of the terrain as they create it.
Severino Trucking of Candia, N.H., went to a cloud-based model to reduce redundancy and disconnect, said Pat L’Heureux, project manager.
“We have some crews that will take a project 80 percent of the way and then another group takes over. Everyone needs to have the same information.”
Going to the cloud has been a “huge timesaver,” reported L’Heureux. “I can now troubleshoot an issue in five minutes, where sometimes in the past it could take me three hours because of travel time.”
And it’s not just machines and production schedules that are part of the data mix. Trackers, specialized hardhats and smart glasses are adding location, fall alerts and biometrics information on construction workers, leading to increases in safety and labor management capabilities.
Contractor Technology Attitudes Have Changed
Contractor attitudes have also shifted, said Trimble’s McLachlan. “We’ve seen a big jump in adoption of connectivity solutions,” she said, “especially now that we can push a design update out to a machine remotely instead of having to drive out to the job site.”
“Every year, the needle is definitely moving on the contractor technology adoption levels,” Fritz said. “There’s an increase in their belief of what technology can do to improve their operations.”
The combination of grade control data with telematics reporting was a significant step forward, said James Leibold, product manager — connectivity at John Deere: “You’re not just having machines that report data, but you can remotely go into a machine and fix it.”
The ability to not physically have to
download job model revisions is critical, said Lyle Ballou, GPS manager of DXI Construction in Churchville, Md.
“We are managing 65 active jobs as we speak, and we have to manage the GPS info as different crews move in and out of different jobs weekly, sometimes daily.”
DXI Construction juggles the workload for 51 different crews in three different states, which necessitates being able to instantly connect and “program” each crew for the work to be performed.
“The investment we have made has eliminated not being able to work, because we have to wait for stakeout, or wait for a program to be driven to a job and downloaded,” Ballou added.
What’s the Right Solution?
One barrier to job site connectivity is the sheer choice of tech options out there, said Jim Bretz, connectivity services support manager at Volvo Construction Equipment. “Customers don’t know what to choose,” he said. Fears about office and field data security are also valid.
“It’s so fragmented right now there with the number of solutions,” said Mitchell. “One company has a cool answer for one thing and another company has a cool answer for another thing. How do you now bring that information into the whole so you can make decisions?”
“The different solutions can be siloed, which makes it hard to have cross compatibility,” added L’Heureux. “If providers get too proprietary, it can hurt the end user.”
Construction Has Technology’s Attention
“I love the attention that the industry is now getting,” said Anetsberger. “People are seeing that it’s either ripe for digital disruption or that there must be an easier way.”
Mitchell agreed: “What is exciting in our industry right now is how technology is really, really ramping up.”
Contractors will be able to piggyback on what’s happening in the broader technology space. In addition to jobsite connectivity, these efforts also will lay the groundwork for autonomous machines.
But don’t think job site connectivity will solve all problems, Bretz said.
“It’s likely it will reveal more issues and create a whole new aspect of managing job sites and machines because it opens up a lot of information that wasn’t immediately available,” he said.
“The connected jobsite concept is something I’m passionate about and I want to see grow,” said L’Heureux. “It will help with the disconnect we see daily between companies, engineers, even internally. It will create more of community if we can share this data.”

“While jobsite connectivity is easy to define, executing it is a completely different matter. Every contractor has a different soup mix of software for office, modeling, scanning, etc.”

Mecalac’s Lifting Power, Visibility Impresses Contractor
“I only needed to load one machine to go do a septic job. Traditionally, it had been an excavator and a skid steer, along with an operator for each. Now I am loading one machine and sending one operator to get the same job done. I purchased six or seven attachments for the machine, and we were sending typically two attachments to each site.”
With the Mecalac’s unique design it turned out to be a great tool for demolition, Sergeant said, adding that he could use a 72-in. brush grapple as a thumb and load 15-ft. tri-axles with the same ease as a mid-sized excavator.
“Typically, with an east coast dump truck, it’s too high to load properly to its full capacity with a skid steer. The Mecalac reaches 16 feet with ease and loads these trucks with no problem. So, when we started to do demolition work, we could get a full bucket with a big grapple and load a large truck with ease.”
After ConExpo and his trip out west, Sergeant had a hard time getting what he saw and enjoyed in the west out of his system. He went back a couple of more times on hunting trips and really fell in love with the area.
“I had an opportunity to purchase one company, but it was just a little too rich for my blood. But I just kept traveling around parts of the western U.S. trying to figure out a way to move my business out here. The longer I worked in Ohio, the more obsessed I became with leaving it. The excavating conditions compared to other parts of the country are very difficult. In dry conditions you’re working with hard to excavate clay. If it’s wet at all, it’s just sloppy mud, and its sloppy and nasty for about nine months out of the year. The more I worked in it the more obsessed I became with getting out of it. Every time I visited the mountains of the west, the more I fell in love with them. We invested in snowmobiles and ATVs to really enjoy our trips. We were ready to go.”
The Sergeant family started a serious house hunting effort, but the timing wasn’t the best.
“Right in the middle of COVID was the worst possible timing. Prices were skyrocketing and everything was well over a half a million dollars. Finally, a stroke of luck came our way, and we found a small home under $400,000 near Grand Junction, Colorado, that perfectly fit the lifestyle we were looking for. A nice home on 18 acres, affordable, near wildlife, with accessibility to land where we could use the snowmobiles and ATVs. Without my wife ever seeing it we made the buy and the big move.”
Shortly after relocating, a problem developed with a practically new excavator that the company had purchased. The machine was down and due to an unfortunate series of errors, an excavator with only 700 hours on it could not be operated and supply chain issues were keeping it on the sidelines. The machine was equipped with a tilt rotator and a tree shear and was completely out of commission.
“About this time, I recalled a unique machine that Mecalac had on display at ConExpo — their model 15MC crawler excavator. Within our fleet of machines, I have a big 320 size machine and the 160 size machine that was out of commission, which were the only ones big enough to lift a septic tank off the truck and in or out of position. They’re big tanks and bulky to work with, weighing 16,000 pounds. The 320 is a huge machine for us, bulky and hard to move, less than ideal for our circumstances.
“I called Ryan at Mecalac, and he told me that the Mecalac 15MC crawler excavator would lift 17,500 pounds. To my way of thinking, that claim defied physics; that’s almost half the weight of the machine. I was in a dilemma; I
did not want to drive the 320 to every job; the 160 was definitely out of commission, and Mecalac had one of the 15MC crawler excavators left in the U.S. which was sitting in Massachusetts.
“I was very skeptical about the Mecalac 15MC’s ability to lift a tank that size, but Mecalac upped the ante and stated that if the machine could not handle the tanks, they would buy the machine back. So, I bought the machine, drove to Massachusetts to pick it up, and sure enough it lifts the tanks with ease.
“Watching the Mecalac lift the tanks is an impressive
sight. The tanks are literally as big or bigger than the machine itself. What apparently makes this work is a uniquely designed Mecalac two-piece boom. It literally transfers the weight back over the center of gravity. Beyond that it’s hard to explain, its physics. It’s a unique engineering design that allows this machine to pick way more than any other machine in the same carrier weight category.”
In addition to its lifting power, Sergeant also is impressed with the machine’s visibility, which he called “absolutely amazing.”
“Somehow Mecalac has fitted the DPF filters and all of this new emission equipment below the line of sight. Their visibility is lightyears ahead of everyone else,” he said.
“I thought I was in great shape before, now it’s even better. I can go to any job to attack any septic project with literally one load on my new lowboy. Both Mecalac machines fit on a single load and will give me all of the equipment that I need to handle any aspect of any septic project, and just about any excavating or demolition project I get involved in.”
No longer needing his 320-size machine, Sergeant sold it and a dedicated trailer that he had for hauling it around, which gave him some positive cashflow and saved him a bunch of money, he said.
“Three weeks later, I finally get the 160-size machine back. Keep in mind, it was an almost new machine that had been out of commission for months, during which time I had made six months’ worth of payments on. It’s given back to me with a $7,000 repair bill. I am absolutely dumbfounded, and to top it all off, I no longer need the machine because the Mecalac is doing everything the 160 was only better.
“Thank goodness we were in the middle of COVID and the supply chain nightmare, and used machines were selling at a very high premium. I was able to sell the machine on the internet the day I got it back and get out from under it unscathed. With the two Mecalac machines and a trailer my equipment inventory was in the best shape it’s ever been in. At that point, fortune was turning our way. Our house back in Ohio sold; I sold off all of our remaining jobs in Ohio to another contractor; and we threw ourselves full focus into our new business.”
Sergeant started using social media, namely Facebook, to promote the septic and excavating business and his phone started ringing.
“Once we completed a few jobs, we received some great recommendations on Facebook and the business grew even more. It’s been a pleasure doing business here. There is not nearly as much mud. We can get in and get out quickly, no clay issues to deal with. We have easier and closer access to our aggregate, which has saved us substantially in our hauling costs. As a matter of fact, the nearest gravel pit is only three miles from my house. There are two loaders parked in the gravel pit, as well as a scale, and it works on the honor system, and it’s open seven days a week. I never dreamed that such a thing could exist.
“With that supply being so close by and with tremendous versatility and accessibility we immediately went into the gravel hauling business. In the first three months, we hauled more gravel than we had hauled in the previous eight years. It’s worked so well we just bought another Peterbilt for a total of three.”

SERGEANT from page 26
Ron Sergeant was skeptical that it would be possible for the Mecalac 15MC to unload and drop into place concrete tanks weighing up to 16,000 lbs.
It’s one thing for a small excavator to be able to unload a tank, but to have the stability to lower it into the ground is another whole issue.

FAE Upgrades DML/SSLForestry Mulcher for Skid Steers
FAE is upgrading one of its most popular products on a global scale: the DML/SSL forestry mulcher for skid steers. All innovations are aimed at optimizing the head’s efficiency and productivity when combined with 50 to 75 hp skid steers.
First, the frame and push frame’s design has been redesigned to offer greater visibility in all working conditions. It’s one detail that will make a big difference in operator’s comfort and efficiency, with the ability to monitor the tasks at hand with more precision, the manufacturer said.
The rotors also are seeing big changes. The DML/SSL can now mount a rotor with robust Mini C/3 teeth or with Mini BL blades, both ideal for making the most
out of the efficient Bite Limiter technology.
This technology makes it possible to achieve more productivity in less time when mulching any kind of wood. The
The DML/SSL can now mount a rotor with robust Mini C/3 teeth or with Mini BL blades, both ideal for making the most out of the efficient Bite Limiter technology.
Bite Limiter rotor comes with special wear-resistant steel limiters that limit the teeth’s reach (bite) so that there is less power demand and a consistent working speed. The Bite Limiter technology also minimizes rotor stalling and optimizes fuel consumption.
The new DML/SSL is available with FAE’s exclusive Sonic technology. This Sonic system ensures that the skid steer and the FAE mulcher are completely aligned by automatically calibrating the mulcher’s parameters. Sonic continuously
manages the mulcher’s hydraulic settings, for a significant boost in overall productivity of up to 30 percent.
The Sonic system also minimizes rotor stalling and shortens recovery time due to the quick recovery of the rotor’s rpm.
There is more that the new DML/SSL offers. The new Spike Pro counter blades ensure low power absorption and a finer granulometry of the processed material. The new interchangeable and adjustable skids offer greater precision. The optional integrated oil cooler ensures the best performance even in hotter climates, according to the manufacturer.
The new DML/SSL is available in four models — DML/SSL/VT, DML/SSL/BL, DML/SSL/SONIC, DML/SSL/BL/SONIC — and in two widths for each model. For more information, visit fae-group.com/en
Caterpillar Launches Nursery, LandscapeAttachments
Caterpillar has introduced new attachments for its range of Cat skid steer loaders (SSL), compact track loaders (CTL) and compact wheel loaders (CWL). These purposebuilt attachments cover multiple tasks, including the handling and scooping of trees, shrubs and bushes, removing and carrying stumps, and loading mulch.
The full range of new attachments feature durable construction for reliability in the field, and deeply serrated steps integrated into attachment design deliver secure footing for operators when entering and exiting the loaders.
Manual, Hydraulic Forks
Cat nursery forks come in manual and hydraulic designs. Both offer a hydraulic pivoting fork that allows the left fork to swing open to fit around multiple root balls. The right fork adjusts either manually or hydraulically, depending on the version, allowing contractors to pick and place desired trees and plants and load/unload them quickly and efficiently.
With their 70.4-in. usable fork length, the new largecapacity nursery forks can hold up to three 28-in. root balls or one 54-in. root ball. The pivoting fork design delivers maximum opening for grasping large root balls, while the side shifting fork provides greater control and proper fit when handling different sized root balls.
The 25-degree, diamond tread plate fork provides a
secure grip for maximum load retention, matching the cut angle of more B&B plants. Its integrated grab handle offers a secure contact point for machine entry/exit.
Pivoting Nursery Grapple
The new Cat nursery grapple is well suited for handling ball and burlap trees and potted plants. Its paddle shape wraps around root balls ranging in size from 28 to 54 in. without damaging the root system or tree.
Offering better control and placement, the grapple’s pivoting design helps manipulate the load in numerous positions to reduce the need for manually handling heavy plants while placing them at the nursery or loading them for transport. The tool is capable of swinging 90 degrees to the left and right, and its ability to downward tilt reaching nearly 90 degrees at any point of rotation allows easy laying of material for loading.
Mulch Bucket
The new 1.0 cu. yd. mulch bucket loads mulch into pickup trucks and tight spaces. With its narrow, 56-in. width, the mulch bucket comfortably loads material inside the bed of most pickup trucks without concern for contact or damage.
Minimizing waste, its smaller profile delivers the necessary clearance to load trucks without material spillage. Its 1yd. measurement is lasered into the side of the bucket, allow-
ing customers to be confident they are getting a full load. The design’s adjustable machine interface provides proper ground contact with different hinge pin heights, so it works effectively throughout the range of Cat SSL, CTL and CWL machines.
Easily Handle Stumps
The stump bucket for Cat SSL and CTL models is purpose designed for removing and carrying tree stumps. Long and narrow floors allow for easy digging around and below tree and large shrub root balls. Its serrated side plates easily saw through stubborn roots, while replaceable teeth ensure long service life with a BHLstyle that can be changed to fork or pick style teeth. Heavy steel construction withstands twisting and prying in the tough jobs for long life reliability.
Scoop Trees
The Cat tree scoop efficiently handles shrubs and small trees at nursery sites and in landscaping applications. Capable of digging and scooping up to a 36-in. diameter, the scoop easily transports or transplants trees and other materials. The spade profile easily digs into the ground, and a flattened tip cuts roots for easy tree removal. Welded gussets and thick plates lend to its rugged design and increased durability.

Doosan’s DX225LC-7X ‘engcon Ready’Option NowAvailable
engcon, a global manufacturer of tiltrotators, quick couplers and accessories for excavators, announced the launch of the engcon Ready option for the Doosan DX225LC-7X series of excavators.
The option is the result of a collaboration between Doosan and engcon to provide an integrated solution between the tiltrotator control system and machine, with all the built-in functions and features.
The collaboration with Doosan , now known as DEVELON, has been ongoing now for some time. The engineering teams on both sides have been working closely together from the start of the project when the features were decided, to the finish and start of production.
The Doosan DX225LC-7X is a fully electro-hydraulic excavator with factory provided 2D machine control and the latest Doosan technology. As a part of this technology offering, the machine is also engcon Ready. engcon Ready means
that the machine can easily be equipped with engcon’s MIG2 Grips and the 3rd generation control system, DC3. Making the machine ready and prepared for the latest technology offering from engcon.
The control system and machine controllers communicate over CAN (Controller Area Network) making it possible to exchange a large amount of data between the two systems at very high speeds. Enabling a deeply integrated solution for the benefit of the customer.
“The deep integration allows engcon and Doosan to create a better operator experience,” said Fredrik Eklind, control system product owner at engcon.
“It allows the operator to get an overview and configure the functions of the MIG2 Grips directly in the Doosan machine display. engcon’s high precision tilt and rotation sensors are also directly integrated with the Doosan semiautomatic machine control solution, weighing and assist features. There is no need for a third party sensor to be installed in the attachment, making it truly integrated with the machine.”
The deep integration and preparation allow for shortened lead times at the dealers while providing a complete offering to the customer.
Stephane Dieu, excavator product manager for Europe, said, “engcon tiltrotators as an attachment is growing in popularity globally and especially in Europe. Making sure that our most advanced machine was prepared for this attachment was important and having it integrated with the rest of our machine technology offering was crucial.
“With the technologies combined the customer can see

Report Deems California Highway as ‘D’ Grade for Its Level of Service
Caltrans Director Laurie Berman added, “This roadway is the principal access into the Inyo and Mono County recreation areas. This project improves the safety, capacity and operation of this important route for the eastern Sierra region and its economy.”
The project partners recognize the need for safety and operational improvements within the segment as the SR 14 Transportation Concept Report identifies a current Level of Service (LOS) of “D.”
“Without highway improvements, the LOS will further deteriorate to an unacceptable level,” stated the web page. “This project will improve this segment of highway to an LOS of ‘B,’ and to a four-lane expressway facility.”
Completed Construction So Far
Granite Construction, which has been working on the project for a few years now, started Segment 1, $21.6 million, in May 2017, which widened SR 14 from a 0.5 mi. north of the junction of SR 178 West to 4 mi. north. The project was jointly funded by the Kern Council of Governments, the Inyo and Mono Local Transportation Commissions and Caltrans.
Christian Lukens, Caltrans’ District 6 information officer, noted that the work included one bridge (NO. 500521) and connector to SR 178.
“The existing lanes were rebuilt with HMA and an RHMA overlay,” he said. “They contain both a paved median, and a separated median area.”
Segment 1 was designed by Anton Kismetian. Average daily traffic before the work was 5,620 (2018) cars and trucks daily and with the new lanes, the expressway section can handle 6,210 (2038) vehicles.
“The design and engineering challenges included cost, environmental, right-of-way, material sites, drainage and mitigation,”“ said Lukens. “The lifespan of the new lanes is 20 years. There were 11 special-status animal and plant species on-site and had the potential to occur within the project area.”
The Segment 1 work site was approximately 100 mi. from Granite's closest office/equipment yard.
“It was a project to widen a highway from two lanes to four lanes in a remote area,” said Darryl Ebel, Granite’s Bakersfield area manager. “Challenges included personnel having to commute and materials such as base rock and asphalt being required to be hauled a long way. The job was in the desert, so a well-developed water supply to compact soils presented a challenge. The area is subject to high winds blowing dust and stored material around, such as pipe. The dirt on the project had a higher shrinkage factor than anticipated, so less material was available to export to Segment 2 than originally anticipated.
“The project was completed on time and on the owner’s budget,” he added, “The soil had a higher shrinkage factor, so more material was incorporated to build the project embankments and less material was stockpiled and exported for Segment 2. Local water sources along the projects had limited water flow, so we had to bring water further from Inyokern to keep up with operational needs. There were no
significant utility issues.”
This was primarily a day shift, with very little night work.
“It was a four-mile linear project built in stages,” said Ebel. “There may have been ongoing structures work outside an area where staged earthwork was being performed. All work was performed along a continuous four-mile segment of right-of-way.
“The project was set in a very rural area, with a couple of businesses and residences along the ROW — very sparse development over the four miles,”he added. “It was a good job. Good partnering with Caltrans. It was very successful teamwork.”
The new lanes were constructed next to the existing road. Granite had three crews operating simultaneously — one dedicated to clearing and grubbing and excavation, another for site prep and installation of underground infrastructure and another that paved the lanes.
“The project was constructed by building the new alignment [lanes] to the east of the existing two-lane segment,” said Ebel. “Work proceeded from north to south. Once the new NB lanes were built, traffic was switched there. The new SB lanes were then reconstructed on the old two-lane alignment. Then a final lift of rubberized asphalt paving was constructed and traffic was placed in its final configuration. The project used multiple crews to perform clearing, mass excavation, grading, drainage, structures work and base and paving. There was a plan to build the project in a standard logical sequence — clear, grade, drainage, base, pave — very standard. Earthwork shrinkage, mentioned previously, was the challenge.”
Contractor’s Equipment
The dirt was moved using Cat 651 scrapers, which was then pushed with D10 push Cats and finished and graded with Cat 14G blades. The blades and finish scrapers had TopCon and Trimble GPS systems.
The site prep work included the installation of underground infrastructure and drainage systems.
“We put in numerous HDPE culverts and one major reinforced concrete box culvert was extended,” said Ebel. “Compaction on the backfill of the culverts with native material was challenging. Much was done with slurry. The job took nearly two years to build. The work was built on schedule. It took weeks to perform most operations in each stage —mass excavation, grading and base rock all to get ready for paving.”
The reconstruction of the existing lanes followed a similar process.
SR-14 has standard 12-ft. lanes and 10-ft. shoulders. Excavation operations removed 600,000 cu. yds. of material. In terms of new materials, 6,000 linear ft. of culvert pipe was installed, along with 56,000 cu. yds. of base rock, 70,000 tons of asphalt paving, and 900 cu. yds. of structural concrete in the box culvert, with 200,000 lbs. of reinforcing steel.
“The existing roadway materials were incorporated into the fills on the reconstructed SB alignment,” said Ebel.”

CARBON from page 1
way to carbon neutrality.”
Ireland noted the industry is “creating a win-win scenario to meet demand for durable infrastructure that also has a low carbon footprint, which will result in a more sustainable and resilient world for the next generation.”
The industry’s “unified approach” to decarbonization is the central focus of the PCA’s Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality.
With the demand for infrastructure never greater, it’s vital for the built environment to advance in a fashion that is sustainable and climate adapted, said the PCA.
“This need spotlights the importance of the progress PCA— representingAmerica’s cement manufacturers — has made on its efforts to reduce emissions.”
In the first year, the campaign saw multiple U.S. cement manufacturers working with the Department of Energy to implement pilot programs around the concept of carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).
The association reported increased acceptance and use of Portland limestone cement (PLC), a product that reduces concrete’s carbon footprint by approximately 10 percent.
“In addition to private building projects, PLC has been approved by 44 state departments of transportation, some of the largest consumers of cement,” noted PCA.
Consumer demand for sustainable concrete is growing, and companies are specifying low-carbon materials for major construction projects.
“Through this Roadmap, we are creating a built environment that is durable and also sustainable,” Ron Henley, president, GCC of America, and PCA board member. “We are demonstrating that the cement and concrete industry can address climate change, reduce greenhouse gases and eliminate barriers restricting environmental progress.”
In fact, the industry is pushing innovation and calling on stakeholders for more collaboration, according to PCA. The association is working with Congress and federal agencies to maximize the benefits of both the IIJA and the IRA.
Both policies, it noted, provide significant funding for the clean technologies the cement industry requires to reduce emissions.
PCAalso wants to see existing legislation, such as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, modernized to accelerate cement and concrete’s path to carbon neutrality. This would also ensure concrete made with cement remains the sustainable building material of choice, the association maintains.
PCA said its comprehensive approach will allow for the industry to continue aligning with private partners, government,
industry and technology leaders on solutions, regulations and policy changes. This effort would result in empowering the industry and others to realize this shared societal mission, according to the organization.
Daunting Journey
“What gives us hope is the fact that there is a big rise in ambition across the industry,” said Radhika Lalit of sustainability consulting firm Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI).
“Companies, corporations, real estate players, anybody who’s constructing new buildings, new ports, new highways, new roads, is looking into these materials.”
She said a coalition of more than 65 corporate buyers, known as the First Movers Coalition, is leveraging the purchasing power of the customers in industries such as cement and concrete.
But to meet the targets of net-zero by 2050, the industry will require some carbon capture in the process, she cautioned.
“It is impossible to fully eliminate process emissions in the cement-making process, and carbon capture will have to remove the remaining CO2,” said Lalit. “We estimate that we need around 20 to 30 carbon capture and storage [CCS] plants in operation by 2030. And we have zero plants with CCS at commercial scale right now.”
Pilot projects are up and running, she said, but the industry currently lacks a plan that uses CCS technology in full-scale operation. “And we are going to need to get to at least 20 within the decade.”
She said many large cement producers are beginning to make investments into CCS and other innovative technologies to reduce their emissions. She is encouraged but is concerned about the lack the speed and scale to fast-track the transition.
“So, I think I’d say we’re cautiously optimistic because we see great momentum, but it is a daunting journey.”
She believes the industry can see the biggest impact in reducing emissions by focusing on the three Cs: clinker, cement and concrete.
Manufacturers can start by reducing the carbon in the clinker-making process. Limestone is the primary raw material, she said.
“You could use other materials such as calcium silicate, magnesium silicate, steel slag, recycled clinker, mining tailings, crushed concrete waste, as well.”
With machine learning and design software, contractors could utilize less concrete in the laying phase, she believes.
Lalit noted that mineralization startups currently store the CO2 in concrete aggregates.
“Supplementary cementitious materials, such as fly ash, slag, volcanic ash and calcined clays have little or no associated emis-
sions and can be introduced into the cement blend to replace a portion of clinker,” she said.
Limestone calcined clay cement — calcined clays, limestone, gypsum and clinker — and other innovative cement blends, can “immediately” help reduce carbon emissions by up to 40 percent, she believes.
It would be a cost-effective move that would cause no major changes to the traditional cement plant, she added.
“These innovations are at different technology readiness levels,” Lalit cautioned.
Some of them are in concept states, some of them are in large prototype demonstration stages.
“But the key to solving the decarbonization challenge for the industry is seeing some of these innovations achieve commercial success at industrial scale within the next three to five years so that their costs can go down,” Lalit added.
Incentives to Reduce
In January, the New Jersey Low Embodied Carbon Concrete Leadership Act (LECCLA) was signed into law to offer a performance-based tax credit to certain concrete producers.
Chris Neidl, policy consultant of the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), said the new policy is a state-led approach to eliminating embodied carbon emissions.
This is the first program of its kind in the United States and had overwhelming bi-partisan support, said Neidl.
“Public procurement is the focal point of the policy,” he said, adding that the aim is mobilizing the influence of state agencies as the single largest purchasers of concrete in New Jersey.
It also focuses on the state’s position as lead regulator of specifications, standards and codes related to the material and its use.
“But LECCLA will leverage market dynamics to realize both short- and longterm carbon emissions reductions in this
essential industry,” said Neidl. “Beginning in 2024, concrete producers who supply at least 50 yards for state-funded construction projects will be eligible for a performancebased tax credit.”
That credit applies if the concrete also delivers quantifiable reductions in embodied carbon, said Neidl.
The total amount of tax credits that can be issued each year is $10 million, to be issued on a first-come-first-served basis. And no single concrete producer can claim more than $1 million in credits per year.
Not only does LECCLA introduce an incentive for concrete producers to overperform, but it can build upon other policy advancements, said Neidl.
For example, low carbon concrete specifications and performance-based specifications have gained hold in New York State.
In South Jordan, Utah, Eco Materials is manufacturing cement using coal waste. The result is a product that lowers carbon emissions by 99 percent.
Several exhibitors at World of Concrete showcased their environmentally sustainable products and processes.
“The gauntlet has been thrown down to be more sustainable and reduce carbon,” said Grant Quasha, Eco Materials CEO, talking to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “This industry really has to use technology and innovation to meet future challenges and see advancement.”
Improving emissions from making cement will be key to achieving future emission goals.
That’s because cement is the most used material in the world behind water, said Eric Ferrebee, senior director of technical services of the American Concrete and Pavement Association (ACPA).
California startup Brimstone has discovered the world’s first carbon-negative cement, made from calcium silicate rocks.
“We’re just making the same thing from a different rock,” Cody Finke, CEO of the Oakland, Calif.-based company, told CBS News.
He said calcium silicate rocks are approximately 200 times more abundant than the limestone traditionally used to make cement.
Calcium in limestone serves as the binding agent in cement. It also contains the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide.
The industry is working to make concrete cleaner, said Steve Regis, cement operations for the CalPortland Oro Grande Cement Plant in southern California.
Brimstone is trying to quickly scale up its cement-making process. The company believes it will be just as reliable as traditional cement, only cheaper.
“We’re quite confident that the chemistry works and we can make the same material,” Finke said. CEG

SECTION Trucks & Trailers
A Century of Innovation: Kenworth Turns 100 in 2023
Throughout the last century, more than 1.3 million trucks have hauled goods across the United States and Canada roadways with the Kenworth badge on the grill.
In 2023, Kenworth begins a year-long celebration, commemorating its 100th anniversary and contributions to the transportation industry.
The history of Kenworth began in 1923 when Harry W. Kent and Edgar K. Worthington incorporated the Gersix Motor Company as Kenworth. The company name was formed from a combination of letters from the founders’ last names while the world-renown Kenworth “bug” logo originated from the K in Kent and W in Worthington.
That first year, the small Seattle truck manufacturer produced 78 six-cylinder, gasoline-powered trucks. Since then, Kenworth has produced more than a million Class 5 to Class 8 models, and super heavy duty trucks, like the C500 6x6 with its gross combination weight rating of 1 million pounds. Kenworth also is now producing medium and heavy duty battery electric vehicles.
“Kenworth’s storied history over the past 100 years provides much to be proud about. From being the first U.S. truck manufacturer to offer a diesel engine as standard equipment in 1933 to selling Kenworth trucks with an electric powertrain today, it’s been quite a journey,” said Kevin
Baney, Kenworth general manager and PACCAR vice president.
“We’re also especially proud of our leadership in truck aerodynamics with the Kenworth T600 introduction in 1985. That model began the revolution in fuel-efficient trucks and its evolution has tremendously advanced in the new flagship T680 that sets industry standard today in truck aerodynamics.”
Kenworth’s success and staying power in a competitive business can be traced back to a philosophy established early in the firm’s history. The goal was to build the right Kenworth truck for each customer’s application to get the job done and build that truck to last. That philosophy, which continues to be true to this day, resulted in Kenworth establishing a solid reputation for its quality, innovative and durable trucks driven by modern technology.
“Kenworth has remained true to its core values since its founding,” said Baney. “We’ve achieved many amazing accomplishments in our first 100 years. But there’s more work to be done at Kenworth as we drive the next 100 years and continue our mission of producing The World’s Best trucks.”
For more information, visit www.Kenworth100.com.
The Kenworth plant on Yale and Mercer streets in Seattle was constructed in 1923. It had a capacity to build 50 trucks per month and remained in-use until 1946.
Kenworth was the first American truck manufacturer to install diesel engines as standard equipment. The first diesel was built for Valley Motor Express in California, and had a small HA-4 Cummins engine — 100 hp. It also had the first vertical exhausts in the industry.

Volvo Trucks has served as the exclusive sponsor since 2002.
Nominated to serve two-year terms as captains of this exclusive group, the members of America’s Road Team are selected for their outstanding driving skills, advocacy for safety, and superior driving records — collectively logging millions of accident-free miles. The team serves to educate students, community groups, lawmakers and government officials on driving safety, as well as on the essentiality and sustainability of the trucking industry.
“The professional drivers who make up America’s Road Team are the elite of their profession, and I am proud to honor them on behalf of Volvo Trucks North America,” said Voorhoeve. “As captains, these men and women represent the movers of our nation’s economy, and as we look forward to our 21st year as the exclusive sponsor, we salute their dedication to the values of safety and sustainability that are also at the heart of Volvo Trucks’ vision.”
In support of the 2023 America’s Road Team campaign, Volvo Trucks will continue to provide a fully loaded Volvo VNL 760. Powered by Volvo Trucks’ enhanced D13 Turbo Compound engine with Dynamic Torque, the VNL 760 features a 13-speed Volvo I-Shift automated manual transmission that enables optimum fuel efficiency without impacting performance. Innovative safety and productivity technology features on the VNL 760 include the Volvo Dynamic Steering (VDS) system and Position Perfect steering configuration, in addition to Volvo Trucks Remote Diagnostics and Remote Programming services and the best-in-class Volvo Active Driver Assist (VADA) safety system.
For the 21st year, Volvo Trucks North America will be the exclusive sponsor of the America’s Road Team safety outreach program for 2023. Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America, is pictured here with this year’s America’s Road Team captains.
Early next year, Volvo Trucks will celebrate and honor the America’s Road Team captains by hosting them at the Volvo Trucks Customer Center in Dublin, Va., where the company’s products and innovations are showcased. The event will be highlighted by the truck handover ceremony.
“Volvo Trucks honors all the professional drivers who represent the hard work and values of the North American
trucking industry, as well as America’s Road Team for its commitment to spreading our message of safety and sustainability,” Voorhoeve said. “These professional men and women deserve our respect and recognition for all they do to deliver essential goods and materials safely and securely, day after day.”
