CEG Founder, Ed McKeon, Passes Away at Age 91 Edwin M. McKeon, founder of Construction Equipment Guide (CEG), died peacefully Dec. 31, 2021. He was 91. Mr. McKeon was born in Philadelphia on Jan. 17, 1930, and was the eldest child of the late Edwin A. and Mary Houlihan McKeon. He was raised in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia and graduated from Holy Cross Catholic Grade School. He was a graduate of St. Joseph’s Prep (1947) and St. Joseph’s University (1953). Upon graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps OCC program and proudly served his country as a Marine for nine years, rising to the rank of captain. On St. Patrick’s Day 1954, Mr. McKeon married the love of his life, Joan Gallagher McKeon; they enjoyed more than 65 years of marriage until Joan’s passing in 2020. Mr. McKeon was the proud father of five children, 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. While starting their family, the McKeons also were getting a new business running. In 1957, 27-year-old Mr. McKeon was working for his father-in-law, who owned Roxboro Cinder Co. in Philadelphia. The company needed to update its equipment and put Mr. McKeon in charge of the search. Local newspapers published special sections on equipment on Sundays but didn’t meet the market’s need. And thus, an idea was born for a publication that circulated in the construction industry that would be a big motivator between buyer and seller. Mr. McKeon took his idea of a shopper-type publication, and with the help of Gene DiMezza, started Construction Equipment Guide in his Pennsylvania home. The first issue, in May 1958, was all construction equipment ads. Editorial didn’t appear in the papers until 1970. By the mid-1980s, CEG was publishing articles describing the history, growth and products of equipment dealers and manufacturers. After laying out the pages and pasting them up in the rec room, that first issue was printed on both sides of a single black-and-white 11-in. by 17-in. flat, which folded to make four pages. It was then addressed and mailed from his house to about 10,000 dealers, contractors and other construction people in the Delaware Valley area. Names came from personal contacts, directories, telephone books and other sources. Mrs. McKeon typed up the bills on a portable typewriter, purchased from a neighbor who sold typewriters. As the business and family grew, the publication began its odyssey to a series of new locations, all providing more space: in 1959, CEG moved from the McKeon rec room to part of a building in Willow Grove, Pa., owned by Walter Blair, who had taken over the printing. In 1960, CEG moved again, to half of a twin home, also in Willow Grove. This provided about 2,000 sq. ft. of space. The next big move was in 1966, when Mr. McKeon purchased a three-
story office building in Glenside, Pa. The publication would stay there for 20 years before moving in 1988 to a morespacious one-story former printing company building, also in Glenside, Pa. Today, CEG is published out of its 22,500 sq.-ft. office building in Fort Washington, Pa. That same year, CEG also began its expansion to a nationwide publication when it published its Southeast Edition. It then began publishing a Midwest Edition in 1994, a Southwest Edition in 1999, and a Western Edition, which includes Alaska and Hawaii, in 2005. CEG purchased Superintendent’s Profile magazine in 2003. This monthly publication profiles a specific New York State highway superintendent or public works commissioner in each issue. Further strengthening the business, in March 2007, CEG purchased the assets of Contractors Equipment Guide. Previously a competitive publication in New England, it is now a biweekly supplement to the Northeast Edition.
Throughout his long career in the industry, Mr. McKeon was for decades a recording secretary for the Delaware Valley Associated Equipment Distributors, a member of the national AED organization and an active member in many other industry associations. Today, CEG is managed by Mr. McKeon’s sons, Ted, Joe and Richard McKeon, and his grandson, Edwin “Teddy” McKeon III, the third generation of the family to begin making his mark on the business. “Our father was a true entrepreneur … a visionary who identified a need in the construction industry and set out to fulfill it,” said the McKeon family. “But he was never complacent. Although CEG had become and remains very successful, he was always thinking of new ways to grow the publications, to further develop content and to evolve to continue to better serve readers and advertisers.” “He was deeply passionate about CEG and he expected the same passion and dedication for the publications from everyone at the company,” Ted McKeon, president of Construction Equipment Guide, added. “He was like a tough coach where he thought that you could always be better today than you were yesterday. He could see potential in us and all CEG team members that we couldn’t always see in ourselves. He knew what he wanted and it was a pleasure to help him achieve those things. “Among his most important achievements was that he founded and built CEG on relationships,” McKeon added. “And this principle remains as vital today as it did back in 1958. My father’s customers became his lifelong friends. How we treat our advertisers and readers today is completely directed and influenced by how he treated people … with respect and gratitude. Everyone at CEG will greatly miss him.” Mr. McKeon is survived by his five children, Pamela (Michael) McDonald, Edwin (Peggy) McKeon Jr., Joseph McKeon, Richard McKeon and Elizabeth (Neil) Rohrer. His beloved 10 grandchildren, Christen (Brian) Meyer, Michael McDonald Jr., Caitlin (Marc) Murphy, Edwin (Caitlin) McKeon III, Joseph “Tripp” McKeon, Kayla and Lindsey Rohrer, Elinor, Katherine and Susan McKeon. His cherished four great grandchildren, Patrick and William Meyer, Harrison and Beau Murphy. His two brothers Thomas (Madeleine) McKeon and Barry (Maria) McKeon, survive him. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ellen McKeon Harvey. A funeral Mass was held at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Lafayette Hill, Pa. Interment followed at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. McKeon’s memory to St. Joseph’s Preparatory School, 1733 W. Girard Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19130. CEG

With the addition of Smart Construction Field and Smart Construction Drone to Komatsu’s suite of job site technologies, contractors have two new tools to better manage projects.
Former Rental Units for Sale:
Komatsu Adds Drone, Smart Field to Job Site Solutions Contractors know that accurate numbers to track job site activity and topography can mean the difference between completing a project on time and on budget. With the addition of Smart Construction Field and Smart Construction Drone to Komatsu’s suite of job site technologies, contractors have two new tools to better manage projects. “When the Smart Construction group came in, they integrated everything together, and the transition felt seamless,” said Kevin Hawkinson, vice president of operations, A.W. Oakes & Son. “Now, we can take the data, transfer it to the machines, get data back from the machines to the office, and utilize all of that information across the board for bidding, customer reference and billing.” Smart Construction Field Using data to track spending allows contractors to analyze those numbers quickly and find cost-effective ways to manage and resource projects. Komatsu has partnered with Moovila, an experienced provider of project management software, to develop Smart Construction Field, a mobile app that allows contractors to easily record job site activity and analyze operational efficiencies in near real time. Reports generated by Smart Construction Field can track daily job site conditions and task progress can be broken down by labor, equipment and materials, including machine utilization and fuel distribution, receipts, timecards and subcontractor work. Regardless of equipment brand, Smart Construction Field can collect machine data
from an entire fleet. Smart Construction Drone Collecting accurate topography is easy with Komatsu’s Smart Construction Drone survey technology. This drone solution captures quantities for production tracking and billing, without personnel walking the job site to do a manual survey. Contractors can gather and analyze data throughout each project phase with topographic surveys that incorporate hundreds of thousands of data points. With the capability to take still photos from up to 400 ft. above ground level or under bridge decks, Smart Construction Drone can be used as pre-job verification or to keep stakeholders up to date. Smart Construction Drone pairs very well with Smart Construction Dashboard. Built to combine data from multiple sources into one comprehensive picture, Smart Construction Dashboard combines 3D design data with aerial mapping and intelligent machine data, to let contractors confirm quantities and visualize job site progress. Smart Construction Dashboard is powered by the 3D visualization power and geospatial accuracy of Cesium, a leading platform to visualize, analyze and share 3D data. Both Smart Construction Drone and Smart Construction Field are part of Komatsu’s Smart Construction solutions, an umbrella of smart applications created to help construction customers optimize their business remotely, and in near-real time. Case Debuts SV215E, SV217E Single-Drum Vibratory Rollers Case Construction Equipment introduced the SV215E and SV217E single-drum vibratory rollers — two new models built for fast and consistent soil compaction on varying lift depths and material types. This is achieved with high centrifugal forces and standard dual amplitude and dual frequency capabilities that allow the operator to dial in compaction performance to each lift. Both rollers operate at 154 hp and weigh in at 33,420 and 36,500 lbs., respectively, with centrifugal forces up to 73,063 and 74,861 lbs. Each model also is compatible with ACEforce intelligent compaction technology to further ensure compaction quality, documentation and productivity. This introduction brings the Case single-drum soil compaction lineup to five models ranging from 75 to 154 hp. “Our focus is on providing the North American market with a full-line of soil compaction equipment that fits a variety of jobsite profiles and transportation needs,” said Jeremy Dulak, product manager, Case Construction Equipment. “These new models add compaction power and performance at the higher end of the product line while retaining the versatility and compaction performance of Case rollers — and we’re helping contractors complete compaction in fewer passes, even on deeper lifts.” Case E Series compactors feature a lowcenter-of-gravity, as well as an axle-free design that provides constant power to the wheels and drum with an electronic selfadjusting torque control system. This is further assisted by automatic traction control with HX drive propulsion system — optional on smooth drums and standard on padfoot models. This creates enhanced stability and performance on grades up to 67 percent, according to the manufacturer. Compaction performance is further enhanced with an oscillating articulated roller joint that maintains consistent drumto-ground contact, and an updated drum design that reduces drift and maintains constant compaction throughout each rotation.

Compaction performance is further enhanced with an oscillating articulated roller joint that maintains consistent drum-to-ground contact, and an updated drum design that reduces drift and maintains constant compaction throughout each rotation.
Standard dual frequencies and amplitudes, along with standard auto vibration control, let the operator set compaction performance based on the type of material and the depth of lift — reaching desired compaction in fewer passes and ultimately improving productivity and reducing wear and tear on the equipment. Available in both cab and open ROPS configurations, Case E Series soil com-
pactors feature a spacious, comfortable and intuitive operator environment with an adjustable seat that swivels up to 80 degrees, providing added visibility to the drum surface and flexibility for compaction in both forward and reverse. The axle-free design also allows the engine to sit lower in the machine, which further improves visibility to the rear with a low, sloped rear hood. All primary machine information and
controls are found in an LED display integrated within the steering wheel of the machine. The display features three core interfaces dedicated to operation and performance, machine information and onboard diagnostics. The display, locked within the steering wheel, eliminates the need for other displays and a larger, bulkier dashboard — further improving visibility from the operator station down to the work area and centralizing all core machine information in a single location. Both new machines are designed for easy groundline serviceability with a manual-lift hood that provides easy access at ground level to all fluid ports, drains, service checkpoints and filters — as well as a cab that can be easily tilted forward for access to all primary hydraulic components of the machine. Each model also is available with optional Case SiteWatch telematics to further enhance fleet management activities. Additional options include a leveling blade, a padfoot shell kit for smooth drum models; a pressurized cab with heat, ventilation, air conditioning and radio; traction tread tires, a rotating beacon, a backup camera, and extra front work lights (only available on smooth drum models). Caterpillar Adds Compact Line of Asphalt Pavers, Screeds
The compact size and small footprint is combined with enhanced maneuverability for more opportunity to pave in confined areas such as narrow streets, small parking lots and other urban-type applications.
Caterpillar Inc. will be adding a new compact line of asphalt pavers and screeds to the paving products family. These standard 8-ft. size-class paver and screed combinations include the AP400, AP455, AP500 and AP555 asphalt pavers as well as the SE47 V and SE47 FM asphalt screeds. They come equipped with features that excel in both urban and rural applications and can fit the needs of both large and small contractors, according to the manufacturer. Compact Size with Big Opportunities The compact size and small footprint combine with enhanced maneuverability for more opportunity to pave in confined areas such as narrow streets, small parking lots and other urban-type applications. The standard paving range utilizing the SE47 V screed is 8 ft. to 15 ft. 6 in. with a maximum width of 20 ft., while the standard paving range of the SE47 FM screed is 8 ft. to 15 ft. 6 in. with a maximum width of 20 ft. 6 in. Furthermore, paving depths up to 10 in. support aggregate paving applications. Easy Transport Efficient movement from one job site to the next is essential to meeting daily production goals and having the ability to transport on a variety of trailer types helps ensure that daily goals are being met. With a length of less than 18 ft. 6
in. and width of 8 ft. 6 in., these 13 to 15 ton size-class machines can be transported without special permits. Furthermore, the front-loading angle of 17 degrees and high bumper clearance simplifies loading without the need for additional blocking materials.
With a length of less than 18 ft. 6 in. and width of 8 ft. 6 in., these 13 to 15 ton sizeclass machines can be transported without special permits.
These new models combine a low truck entry height with smaller, 14 in. diameter augers that efficiently move material through the auger chamber at both narrow and wide paving widths.
Exceptional Mobility, Fast Travel Speed, traction, flotation and durability are all great features of the Cat Mobil-trac undercarriage design utilized on the AP455 and AP555. The four-year prorated warranty helps ensure contractors get the life expectancy from their rubber track belts. The four-bogie system with selftensioning accumulators and center guide blocks help prevent slippage and reduce wear, while the oscillating bogie wheels help deliver smooth transitions when exiting the cut over transverse joints of mill and fill applications. For contractors that prefer a simple wheel undercarriage design, drive tire options include both sand-rib and radial options. The AP400 can be equipped with a front-wheel assist option, while the AP500 can be equipped with frontwheel assist or the all-wheel drive option for increased performance on soft base materials or when pushing heavy loads. Smooth Material Flow Smooth material flow is a criti-
cal component that can help contractors achieve quality targets. These new models combine a low truck entry height with smaller, 14 in. diameter augers that efficiently move material through the auger chamber at both narrow and wide paving widths. Another feature is the ability to control each material feed sensor when utilizing cut-off shoes or when paving at narrow widths, simply switch to manual and utilize the proportional control dial for the feed system. Simple to Operate, Easy to Learn Consistency and familiarity with paver and screed functions help operators perform at their best. Whether paving straight-line rural or urban applications, Cat pavers and screeds utilize similar functions across the entire product line that enables personnel to easily move between crews or train new members when necessary. These new machines have simplified menu structures that provide sin-
gle-touch activation for screed heat, washdown, and ventilation systems all from the main menu. As with all Cat pavers, these new models also provide singletouch activation of the feeder system and hopper fold functions. Efficient Power, Enhanced Visibility Cat pavers are equipped with an eco-mode feature that combines with automatic speed control to reduce fuel consumption. In most conditions, the engine can operate at a lower rpm and still deliver the required power to meet performance requirements. If needed, the engine will automatically adjust to a higher engine speed if certain load conditions are met. The AP400 and AP455 pavers are equipped with a Cat C3.6 engine, while the AP500 and AP555 utilize the Cat C4.4 engine. Both engines meet U.S. EPA Tier IV Final and EU Stage V emission standards. Unique to these pavers is the
enhanced visibility to the hopper. The exhaust stack that is utilized on other Cat pavers has been integrated into the new hood design and does not extend upward on this compact line of pavers, providing operators with unrestricted forward visibility, according to the manufacturer. Versatile Screed Designs Whether paving straightline, rural-type applications or winding through urban applications with curbs and light poles, Caterpillar has the screed options to perform in all types of conditions. The SE47 V screed utilizes extenders that are located behind the main screed. This design enables material to naturally flow out to the end-gates for smooth, stable performance. The SE47 FM screed is equipped with extenders located in front of the main screed and offers a smaller footprint that reduces handwork at the start of the paving pass. The front-mounted extenders make it easy to quickly reduce paving widths when maneuvering around obstacles by easily drawing material back into the auger chamber. Optional extension packages as well as berm attachments for the SE47 FM enable both these screeds to perform exceptionally well in a variety of applications. For more information, visit www.cat.com.

A report published by the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) adds to the growing library of data and resources on the resilient aspects of asphalt pavements. In NCAT Report 21-02, Asphalt Pavement: A Critically Important Aspect of Infrastructure Resiliency, authors Benjamin F. Bowers and Fan Gu provide an in-depth literature review of asphalt pavements in the context of resilience, along with a list of tools for resilience. They also identify resilient practices associated with asphalt pavements, such as fast construction to rapidly repair roads that are damaged during extreme events, perpetual pavement design to harden critical corridors and leveraging maintenance schedules to incorporate resilience adaptations.
Events impacting pavement resilience include flooding, sea level rise, snow events and droughts. The report includes related case studies examining the Alaska earthquake of 2018 and the Iowa flooding of 2019. It also shares highlights from a 2019 asphalt pavement resilience workshop attended by contractors, asphalt pavement associations, agencies and academics. In addition to funding the NCAT report in partnership with State Asphalt Pavement Associations, NAPA offers a growing list of resources on asphalt pavement resilience: videos, webinars and additional reports. Visit AsphaltPavement.org/Resilience to examine and implement all the available resources, particularly in the context of increased focus on resilience in proposed highway legislation, procurement and funding. AGC, Procore Launch Scholarship to Assist Minority Students Studying at HBCUs The Associated General Contractors of America and Procore Technologies Inc., a provider of construction management software, are launching a new scholarship program to assist African American and disadvantaged minority students who are studying construction fields at historically black colleges and universities, or HBCUs. The new scholarship is being made possible due to a $250,000 challenge gift from Procore that the association will now fundraise to meet and exceed. “We don’t want to price future leaders out of their opportunity to shape the construction industry,” said Stephen E. Sandherr, the association’s chief executive officer. “These new scholarships will put a new and more diverse generation of students on track to become tomorrow’s construction leaders and innovators.” Sandherr noted that the new HBCU scholarship program is part of the association’s broader efforts to make the construction industry more diverse and inclusive. The association also operates a nationwide recruiting campaign called
“Construction is Essential” to attract more diverse workers. Its Culture of Care program helps firms create more welcoming and inclusive workplaces. And its Business Case for a Diverse Industry helps construction leaders see how more diverse firms are innovative, profitable, and safe. “The ultimate outcome of these scholarships is to increase the representation of African Americans in the construction industry, where the numbers have remained too small for too long,” said Pat Wadors, Procore chief talent officer. “This scholarship program is an extension of our investment in diversity and inclusion and workforce development, two of the industry’s most pressing needs.” The challenge gift from Procore is part of the Carpinteria, Calif.-based technology firm’s commitment to connecting construction and technology to the tools, resources and community needed to build a more inclusive and diverse future. Procore is supporting the industry through partnerships with minority contractors associations to pro-

FleetWatcher CMS Offers Color-Coded ‘At a Glance’ Maintenance-Due Status FleetWatcher’s popular Construction Management Solution (CMS), collects data from all construction equipment assets, regardless of class or manufacturer, and presents the maintenance due report with color coded entries providing “at a glance” status. Built specifically for the heavy equipment industry, this telematics platform shows equipment that is within 36 hours of its required maintenance in yellow, and any equipment at or past its maintenance due date in red. This allows fleet maintenance managers to better schedule in-shop personnel and service trucks in the field. Unlike OEM telematics, which require separate logins for each brand and present information differently, FleetWatcher works across all fleet equipment with a single login and presents the data in an easily understood format which can be shared with all applicable personnel via cell phone, tablet or computer. FleetWatcher CMS is useful for heavy construction contractors of all types and sizes. Throughout the day, FleetWatcher collects specific and customized data from the attached fleet. That information is then processed and delivered through a Daily Snapshot in the
specific data and format that users select. Reports, available online or in MS Excel format can be shared with team members. More than 20 reports and hundreds of filtering options allow users to have the information needed to manage their business more effectively and efficiently. In addition to maintenance due, FleetWatcher tracks multiple data points including cycle times, productivity and down times, equipment utilization and underutilization, project status, budgets, shop costs, rental expenses, trends and behaviors, and more. It integrates with all major management programs including accounting, estimating, invoicing and more. Earthwave Technologies manufactures construction-specific wireless telematic products which provide complete visibility to all components used within the process. Its Fleetwatcher Material Delivery Solution (MDS) is being used by asphalt paving contractors across the United States. It also offers modules for e-ticketing, off-road construction, and more. Contractors Turn to Innovative Tech to Complete Projects
By Giles Lambertson CEG CORRESPONDENT
Any 21st-century discussion of new technology in construction usually is couched in terms of software and hardware, with a tip of the hat to such things as advanced metallurgy and dynamic engineering. Yet at the end of the day, the industry’s progress in employing new tech is predicated on such old-time concepts as attitude, initiative and willingness to take risks. That becomes clear in talking with industry professionals like Jeff Sample, who describes himself as an “industry evangelist.” The so-called “Ironman of IT” — a label that alludes to his personal fitness routines as well as his enduring engagement as a proctor of best business practices — said technological progress in construction is grounded in a company’s self-awareness. “Everyone loves to buy software,” said Sample, who is head of communications of the Join collaboration software company, “but tech does not solve problems. You must first identify problems, understand the depth of them, before you can find solutions to the problems. You might even have to change a process to apply software solutions.” “First, know thyself” is how an evangelist might put it. “I encourage every construction company to identify its DNA. Everyone is different. There are the leading-edge companies that are always ready to try the latest thing. Then there are the early adaptors who quickly adapt and follow. And then there are companies that are laggards and quite comfortable where they are. “You need to understand where you are when you choose to try a new software solution,” said Sample. “If you are a laggard, I can already guarantee you it won’t work.” Brianne Stewart might not disagree with the gist of Sample’s assessment. Stewart is a construction technology manager of Milwaukee Tool. She has a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Iowa and acquainted herself with manufacturing processes at such companies as Proctor & Gamble and John Deere before joining Milwaukee Tool four years ago. In respect to the progressiveness of construction companies, Stewart understands the position in which construction executives and small contractors find themselves. “There has been so much coverage recently about the construction industry lagging in its
According to industry professional Jeff Sample, technological progress in construction is grounded in a company’s self-awareness.
embrace of technology,” she said. But, she added that some of this reluctance to run with the latest technology offering can be the fault of those who promote the tech. “Sometimes companies simply come to market with solutions they believe will work instead of first working with contractors and fully understanding what the challenges are on a job site. Even when tech companies come into the construction industry with solutions that are great, their solutions are hard to implement,” she said. Consequently, Stewart doesn’t view the industry as unprogressive so much as cautious. “This is a very high financial risk industry, because of profit margins and schedules,”she said. “So, contractors and companies take a very deliberate view of new technology. For them, there’s a higher burden of proof needed that a new solution actually will increase productivity, or the quality of work, or safety on a job site. A solution must be proven to be of real value on a job before a company feels comfortable adopting it.” Stewart said her interactive role with construction companies in the course of devel-
oping or redeveloping tools has shown her “how involved contractors are getting. My sense is that they are very interested in working with solution providers to help shape technology.” Sample prefers to eschew the whole “Top Five List of New Technologies” approach to looking at the future of technology in construction. Rather, he rolls it all together in the rubric of “industrialization,” that is, the need to increasingly manufacture components offsite. “The industrialization of construction possibly is the most important piece of the industry’s future,” he said, “and we are not going to industrialize and become more manufacturing-based without great technology and great application of technology.” Talk of construction manufacturing brings to mind modular homes and, perhaps, precast bridges assembled on site, but Sample skews smaller. Think bathrooms. “The easiest one for me to describe is bathroom pods for hospitals. They are all the same. So, when you are building them onsite, you are doing something repeatedly. An alternative is to build the bathrooms in a factory, hook
them up and you’re done. “Or the headwalls next to a hospital bed. All the necessary infrastructure for patient outlets — gas lines, electrical, plumbing — are built into those walls. We can prefabricate them. So, when you are building a hospital, prefabricating those walls and bathroom pods are one way to speed up construction, increase availability, and reduce costs. “That’s industrialization of construction. You are never going to build everything in a factory and ship it to a site. What we are talking about is much smaller than what people commonly think about. You have to think smaller. Not every job is going to use off-site manufacturing, but it should be part of the mix.” Stewart’s team at Milwaukee Tool looks at equipment with an eye toward helping contractors adopt advanced technologies. “Power tools are part of the technology ecosystem, a very powerful part of the system,” she said. “We are the point where people and materials come together. And the technology of the power tool industry evolves as well.” see SOLUTIONS page 52

Cat Command Remote-Control Operation Expanded to Excavator Line
Deeply integrated with the excavator’s electronics, Command controls allow users to experience the same machine response as if they were operating from inside the cab, allowing a high level of productivity to be maintained from a safe distance.
New Cat Command for Excavating provides remote-control operation for select Cat excavators. Removing the operator from the machine in potentially hazardous operating environments, Command for Excavating enhances safe machine operation, while reducing operator fatigue to increase productivity. Six Cat excavators spanning the 20 to 40 metric ton class sizes — Cat 320, 323, 326, 330, 336 and 340 models — can now be equipped with either line-of-sight or non-line-of-sight remote operating configurations. Cat excavators are made Commandready through a dealer-installed field kit for new or existing fleet machines. The kit features multiple cameras for non-line-of-site operation from the Command station that offer a view of the area surrounding the machine plus the ability to stream on-site video feeds. Alongside the cameras, indicator lights, microphone, wireless receiver and antenna are all mounted on top of the cab to minimize the risk of damage. Deeply integrated with the excavator’s electronics, Command controls allow users to experience the same machine response as if they were operating from inside the cab, allowing a high level of productivity to be maintained from a safe distance. Machine technology features such as Grade Assist, Swing Assist and E-Fence also can be set, activated and deactivated remotely without the need to be set manually from inside the cab. Excavators are efficiently switched between remote and
manual operation via a groundlevel switch. With users comfortably controlling dig, lift and tracking functions from a safe location, Command for Excavating enables production to restart immediately following disruptive processes, such as blasting in quarry applications. ‘Industrialization’ of Tech Vital for Construction SOLUTIONS from page 47
Stewart added, “In addition to the improved technology of tools and batteries, the company has become a full-solution provider, offering supportive solutions such as digital offerings and safety integration and storage. These all augment the business. Sometimes the way an overall platform of a tool and the way it integrates with other tools and materials is more important than the individual product. Integration of a platform supports better project management.” Perhaps the tool technology that has evolved most significantly in recent years is safety controls, she said, citing remote operation of such tools as cable-cutters. These features “remove people from the danger zone” through use of new technology. Another example is the company’s MX FUEL system of battery-powered light equipment. The Wisconsin-manufacturer launched the brand new battery system platform to open the way for non-gasoline-powering of larger hand tools such as breakers and cut-off saws. Stewart says the lineup of equipment powered by MX FUEL will continue to grow as the concept is integrated with other technologies. Sample evangelizes about industrializa-

We don’t have the skilled labor to do it otherwise. We don’t have the bodies to throw at it. We aren’t China or India. We need to learn how to industrialize.” He credits such commercial offerings as ProCore project management software and Autodesk computer-aided design software with being “foundational” to the industry’s future. “They nailed it. They drove stakes in the ground declaring, we shall never go
back. We shall forever do it this way.” Sample calls building information modeling, or BIM, the core of industrialization. “Mixed reality in design, augmented reality, virtual reality, they do not exist without BIM. We can make corrections easier on the design page in the office, then take those models and overlay them over the site. This becomes powerful.” He believes the industry is at “the dawn of the data age,” noting that BIM is data-based “and it is going to fuel machine-learning, deep learning and AI where you teach a machine how to identify and do things. This

is the future. We’ve been gathering all this data and now we are going out and doing things with it. If you are a construction or equipment business leader, data is your goldmine.” Or not, as the case may be. Some construction companies will, for good reason or bad, elect to operate without tapping into their data bank. Sample acknowledges that the future is what a company makes it. “There are a ton of construction companies over a hundred years old, building from generation to generation,” he says. “If you run one of those companies and you think you can standpat and hold out against change, you are slowing dying off. All of your equity is being lost and you aren’t going to have anything to pass off to the next generation. If you are willing to kill the company, fine. Standpat.” However, if a company owner is willing to adapt, the firm can endure for another generation. “One time an owner of a thirdgeneration construction company came up to me and thanked me for what he said was a ‘wake-up call.’ For the fact is, tech is going to be a core part of the construction business forever. Eventually you won’t say you are in construction, but that you are in tech and do construction.” Stewart sees new technology becoming less of a generational marker than it has sometimes been in the past. “All generations are more tech savvy now. It is not a great leap any more for people of just about any age to use an i-Phone on job sites.” Besides, she notes, predictions of contractors turning their backs on electronic devices and computerization have not always been borne out. “I remember when people were adamant that operators of heavy construction equipment would never use a touch screen. They would never accept it.” Things didn’t pan out that way. Never say never. A forward-looking contractor might surprise you. CEG

Leica Geosystems Announces Substantial Safety Awareness Solution Enhancements
OKLAHOMA TERRITORY CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT www.oklahomaterritoryequipment.com
Leica Geosystems offers a modular safety awareness solution to increase worker safety awareness and visibility between workers and machine operators to prevent machine-to-people, machine-to-machine and machine-to-objects collisions.

Leica Geosystems, part of Hexagon, announced substantial enhancements to its modular safety awareness solutions: the Leica iCON PA10 and PA80 for construction sites. After initially concentrating on pedestrians, the enhancements now include collision avoidance in hazardous conditions involving sensor-enabled machines, objects and restriction zones. Construction sites can be dangerous: heavy traffic, large equipment, poor visibility and blind spots all create the potential for accidents on site. “We all live through our senses”, said Brad Mullis, product manager of personal alert systems at Leica Geosystems. “We know what it means to see, hear or feel rain and then change our behaviour to dress or drive differently. But those are our actions. What about the rain? What if the rain would feel differently in our presence? What if our surrounding were aware of us?” Heavy construction consistently ranks in the top three industries worldwide for serious injuries and fatalities. Addressing these risks constituted the primary motivation behind the development of the Leica iCON safety awareness solution portfolio. The enhanced safety awareness technology from Leica Geosystems is helping to prevent incidents on construction sites. “We aim to provide solutions that protect assets and infrastructure but most importantly allow more people to always see their families after a hard day’s work,” said Mullis. Committing to technology that integrates a collisionavoidance system with a personal alert solution might be the smartest investment a company can make to improve productivity and safety. Providing better visibility, greater feedback to operators and field personnel minimizes the risk of injuries, near-misses and site shut-downs. For construction sites, safety awareness is a sound investment, ensuring that everyone gets home safely. A Vision for Blind Spots: Leica iCON PA10 The Leica iCON PA10, is an accident-avoidance device worn by workers when on-site that gives machine operators 360-degree visibility of pedestrians around heavy equipment. The personal alert device creates multiple zones with up to 50 meter ranges with configurable warnings around
any vehicle. The technology can predict potential close interactions between machinery and field crew, generating visual, audible and vibratory alarms to both operators and the pedestrians to avert potential accidents. Additional sensors can easily be installed on other moving objects and machines or to mark static infrastructure and avoidance zones. The resulting impact on blind spots and their human, operational and financial risks is significant. Safety awareness can thus become a keystone of how people, products and precious resources interact on successful construction sites. Integrating the Leica iCON PA80 for Connected Safety Awareness Users of the Leica MC1 machine control platform can leverage their investments to run the new safety awareness solution. The Leica iCON PA80 integration will automatically alert the operator on the screen of the same device that they already use for their ongoing machine operations. This will increase awareness and response time regardless of if the operator is in a dozer, excavator or any other heavy equipment using the MC1 machine control system. Leveraging the MC1 cloud enablement, incidents also can be logged and distributed to enable visualization, analytics or reporting within a contractor’s existing safety management processes. “Alerting workers for possible hazards and capturing data of near-miss incidents are two key deliverables of Leica Geosystems safety awareness technology that helps protect workers and contributes to risk management planning,” said Tommi Kauppinen, chief innovation officer, machine control division at Leica Geosystems. “The Leica iCON PA10 and PA80 has been developed with this specifically in mind. Many conversations and field research in construction jobsites and mines enabled us to capture safety requirement that gave us the insights to develop this technology for collision avoidance and personal safety. It is exciting to see how our integrated platform MC1 is expanding to include personnel, equipment and asset safety.” For more information, visit https://leicageosystems.com/products/machine-control-systems/awareness-solutions.

Hoelscher Sees Similarities in Industries Sonsray Serves
Hoelscher got his start renting trailers and selling refrigeration units for trailers. Less than a decade after expanding into the equipment business, Sonsray is now one of the largest Case dealers in the country. SONSRAY from page 8
enterprise. The locations were Case corporate stores at the time, and Hoelscher said the company worked with him to make the purchase possible. In addition to stores in California, the sale included branches in Oregon and Washington. The Case line has fit in well with Sonsray’s company objective of growing market share. “Case does a good job with municipalities and enjoys a strong position at or near the top of the market segment,” he said, noting that
government orders make up approximately 30 percent of Sonsray’s sales. “Case is aggressive and has a good name with municipalities. When you meet with municipalities, Case has a very good reputation.” Early in 2021, Sonsray completed the acquisition of four Case CE locations in Phoenix and Tucson, bringing its total construction equipment branches to 15 in four states. Rentals Keeping true to his roots, rental, Hoelscher said, is an important element of in

all of Sonsray’s holdings. This holds true in all industries his company serves, he said. “Whether in transportation, construction or agriculture, as equipment becomes more expensive, more complicated, owners like being able to get in and out quickly,” he said. “The old school attitude of fixing it yourself or have mechanics on the payroll is going away. Small farmers who were do-it-yourselfers are going away. The modern businessman likes knowing what his fixed costs in equipment will be.” Sonsray’s rental fleet of construction equipment stands at approximately 450 units and is growing monthly.
Sonsray service technicians are fully trained and certified to work on all Case equipment, both construction and ag.
Case Agriculture After selling Case construction equipment for more than nine years and becoming comfortable with the company and the product, Hoelscher recently took the dive into the world of agricultural equipment, buying five locations of California Case dealer Booth Machinery. Familiarity with the Case brand was one factor — another was that selling ag equipment fit nicely into Sonsray’s operational model. Thirdly, though, it was an opportunity to better serve the existing Sonsray customer by extending the service and parts footprint of the company. The five former Booth locations (four in California and one in Arizona) are positioned to serve farmers but also will be available to service existing Sonsray customers that may be operating the equipment in areas there was not previously a Sonsray dealer. All technicians at the new ag locations also will be trained to work on construction and transportation equipment. “We want our customer to be able to maintain their relationship with us even if they are not near where they bought their machine,” said Shawni Young, director of strategic planning of Sonsray.
‘Bigger Is Better’ Sonsray currently has 38 branch locations across all its divisions: Sonsray Machinery, Sonsray Rental and Sonsray Fleet Services. “Our vision certainly includes bigger is better,” Hoelscher said of potential further expansion. “I see us increasing our investment in the rental fleet, probably more locations that are rental only. And a bigger overall footprint. I want Sonsray to be a brand that is a leader in all of our industries.” “We’ve added Richard Abbajay to our team recently as vice president of sales,” he said. “He’ll be totally sales-focused and brings great experience with him. He’ll be a great asset as we continue to grow.” Constantly returning to the service model, however, Hoelscher outlined how he’d like Sonsray to be viewed. “I want the company to be known as a service leader,” he said. “I want people to say Sonsray sold or rented us a product and they were always there for us. Whatever and whenever we were needed, we were there. From purchase, to breakdown, to trade in to repurchase, Sonsray wants to be there for our customers.” CEG

TOUGH TASKS SEEM SMALL FROM HERE. The G-Series Skid Steers and Compact Track Loader are majorly tough customers, because tough customers like you helped design them. With your input, we were able to push the limits of durability, engine power, and fuel capacity in all the ways our customers need. And with fewer grease zerks and extended oil-change intervals compared to earlier models, servicing is even simpler than before. Available in three models, including a radial-lift machine, the G-Series can take down the biggest jobs — and your operating costs — all at the same time. To learn more, call or visit us today.
