Located more than 6,000 ft. above sea level at the foothills of Rocky Mountains’ Pikes Peak, Colorado’s $75 million U.S. Olympic Museum will create a gateway to downtown Colorado Springs when it opens in 2019. The three-story building will be the new home of the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, and will feature highly interactive exhibit space, a theater, gift shop, café and a simulated broadcast studio. “The U.S. does not currently have an Olympic museum,” said Pam Shockley-Zalabak, interim CEO of the U.S. Olympic Museum. “We have amazing Olympians and Paralympians with incredible stories to tell. Acquisitions Lead to New Company Kerry Vickar, chairman, and Mitch Nevins, CEO, announced the formation of a new company — National Equipment Dealers LLC (NED) on Jan. 5, 2018. Simultaneously, NED announced the acquisition of Four Seasons Equipment LLC, May Heavy Equipment LLC and Earthmovers Construction Equipment LLC, as well as some assets of International Iron LLC. “This is a truly exceptional opportunity for NED to expand in what is recognized as the three fastest growing economic areas in the U.S.: Texas (Houston and Dallas), the Carolinas (Raleigh, Lexington, Charlotte, Columbia, Greenville/Spartanburg, Charleston) and Florida (Orlando),” said Mitch Nevins, CEO of NED in a release announcing the acquisition. “Under the newly formed NED [with a corporate office in Charlotte, N.C.], May Heavy Equipment, Four Seasons Equipment and Earthmovers Construction Equipment LLC will continue to operate autonomously with the same company names,” Nevins told Construction Equipment Guide (CEG). “However, they will now report operationally as well as financially to the parent company level — National Equipment Dealers. It’s not every day that traffic comes to a halt for a bridge moving down the highway, but that’s just what happened on SH-11 in Tulsa County in December 2017. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is replacing the historic SH-11 bridge over Hominy Creek just north of Sperry. The bridge was built in 1940 and is a Kthrough-truss structure, a rather common bridge type in Oklahoma but very rare nationally. It met the

requirements to be a part of ODOT’s Adopt-A-Bridge program, which allows for a bridge to be donated, at no cost, to anyone willing to relocate the structure and maintain its historic character at a new location. Following federal guidelines, the ODOT Cultural Resources Program makes historic bridges available for adoption in cases where rehabilitation is not possible and a replacement is needed. These

bridges are typically smaller truss structures on the state highway and county systems. If a successful adoption can’t be arranged then the structures are demolished to make way for a new structure. This SH-11 truss structure was

removed in one piece and transported to its new home on private land in the Skiatook area. ODOT is continuing work to build a new bridge over Hominy Creek. The bridge is expected to be completed in late spring 2018, weather permitting.

Komatsu Southwest Adds Sennebogen to Its Line Up The new Komatsu dealership serving New Mexico and west Texas is continuing its growth by adding Sennebogen purpose-built material handlers to its flagship line. Grant Adams, president of Komatsu Southwest, has been leading an ambitious program to grow the company’s scope of equipment and services. HDOT Celebrates New Improvement Projects at Hilo Harbor The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT), Harbors Division, celebrated the blessing of Hilo Harbor’s newly completed Pier 4 cargo wharf project, the Pier 1 cargo yard and passenger terminal improvements. The projects are designed to increase operational space and increase cargo handling efficiencies. The improvements to the passenger terminal will create a more pleasant and comfortable environment for cruise passengers. “These projects are more than brick and mortar improvements, they’re about providing opportunities for our people and meeting the needs of our communities,” said Gov. David Ige. “We are ensuring the viability of our commercial harbor system and encouraging a healthy job market that includes work opportunities in transportation, maritime related trades, hospitality and tourism, not to mention the local consultants and contractors the state has employed to complete the job.” The Pier 1 Shed Modifications, Phase II project consisted of several improvements that upgraded the operational efficiency at Pier 1 by removing approximately 40 percent of the Pier 1 shed structure. This will allow vessel operators improved utilization of the pier, increasing cargo yard capacity and improving the cruise passenger experience. In addition, there is new asphalt concrete pavement, fire protection and lighting in the new cargo yard. Other improvements to the Pier 1 shed create a more pleasant and comfortable environment to enhance the cruise passenger experience in Hilo. They include renovated restrooms, a new security room, a new fire alarm system and additional fire sprinklers throughout the shed. Work also included lead paint and asbestos abatement and disposal. “Our shed modifications at Pier 1 enable better utilization of pier side facilities, helping to improve efficiencies in our cargo yard while improvements inside the passenger terminal will make our visitors’ experience more comfortable,” said Jade Butay, interim director of transportation. “In addition, the new improvements at our Pier 4 cargo terminal will alleviate some of the logistical challenges and improve our interisland cargo operations in the Port of Hilo. I want to congratulate our Harbors team as well as our partners — the Hawaii Harbors Users Group (HHUG), our consultant and contractors on a job well done.” Development of the Pier 4 cargo terminal was separated into several phases including: dredging; container yard development; and Kumau Street improvements. Terex Launches Enhanced Optima Series Aerial Device Line Terex Utilities debuted the Optima Series of enhanced aerial devices used for construction and maintenance of distribution lines at the International Construction & Utility Equipment Expo (ICUEE), Oct. 3 to 5, in Louisville, Ky. The new Optima TC, TCX, HR and HRX Series feature product enhancements in the heart of the Hi-Ranger aerial device product line. “Performance, productivity, and safety are among the top concerns of electric utility customers,” said Joe Caywood, director of marketing. “Terex Utilities has responded to customer requests time and again in an effort to provide continuous improvement of our products that are rooted in these three areas of focus. “Optima is built on the strong foundation of Hi-Ranger, designed to provide greater reliability, efficiency and simplified operation and maintenance,” said Caywood. Product improvements include greater payload capacity, better boom speeds, enhanced side reach

and ground access, as well as features that improve maintenance access and reliability on the Optima Hi-Ranger aerials, according to the manufacturer. Optima TC and HR models boast 3 ft. more side reach. A visual indicator light shows the operator when the boom moves into the extended reach area of the working range. The addition of the optional load alert system further enhances safe work practices by monitoring

the truck’s jib and basket capacity. In addition, all Optima aerial devices now have 700-lb. platform capacity as standard. Optional 800lb. capacity platforms are available on the Optima TCX and HRX models. An optional two single man 24 x 30-in. platform is available with capacity of 700 lbs. (350 lbs. for each bucket). Maintenance Over the life of the aerial device,

simplified maintenance increases uptime for fleet managers and improves operation. The leveling chain now has extended life of 10 years before replacement (based on typical utility usage). At five years, the inspection does not require the chain to be removed. A new pedestal design on all Optima models provides technicians easier access to torque lower rotation bearing bolts, which are now accessible on the outside of the pedestal. Plus, all hydraulic fittings located above the boom rotation are sealed with O-rings, reducing leaks. Mike Patterson, Oklahoma Department of Transportation executive director, informed the Commission that roadwork is beginning this weekend on I-40 between I-240 and Peebly Road which will widen I-40 to six lanes and reconstruct the interchange at Choctaw Road Construction on the up to $75 million project is expected to take more than two years. Also announced was a future weekend closure of I-235 in late January for an ongoing construction project on N. 50th Street. Crews will close all lanes of the interstate while moving in an overhead railroad bridge into place. The event date, currently targeted for the weekend of Jan. 20 or Jan. 27, will be determined as the initial weekend approaches as it is dependent on weather conditions among many other factors. The three-day event will be live streaming online and seating will be provided on site for those interested. Patterson highlighted several major transportation news items from 2017 with an emphasis on the impact of state funding cuts to the Eight-Year Construction Work Plan. Commissioners approved the STIP to be forwarded to the Federal Highway and Federal Transit Administrations for formal and final approval. The STIP includes the first four years of highway projects in ODOT’s EightYear Construction Work Plan and federally funded projects by the Association of Central Oklahoma Governments, tribal governments and public transit providers. Commissioners gave their approval for a $528,900 engineering contract to prepare construction plans to modify the interchange at the I-40 and I-40B west junction in Clinton. The project is included in the EightYear Construction Work Plan with a scheduled let date in federal fiscal year 2024 for a total estimate of $20 million. Since ODOT does not typically advertise new highway construction projects for bid in December, no construction contracts were awarded by the commission this month. The eight-member panel, appointed by the governor to oversee the state’s transportation development, meets monthly. CDOT Signs $248M Contract to Build I-25 Express Lanes The Colorado Department of Transportation is officially on the road to adding an Express Lane in each direction on I-25 from Johnstown to Fort Collins starting later this year. A $248 million contract with Kraemer/IHC has been approved for the project which will increase capacity by adding an Express Lane in both directions of I-25, replace aging bridges and widen others, create new pedestrian and bicycle access under I-25 at Kendall Parkway, and connect the Cache la Poudre River Regional Trail under I-25. Kraemer/IHC was the preferred contractor for the project when bids were opened in November. Negotiations on the final contract continued and were finalized at the end of December. “We have overcome a lot of hurdles to bring this project to fruition,” said Heather Paddock, CDOT North I-25 corridor manager. “Now that the ink has dried on the contract the real work out on the road can begin. We are so excited to get

this going for all of Northern Colorado.” Local partners and elected officials have been heavily involved in the planning, implementation and funding of this critically important project. Partners include Larimer and Weld counties, the city of Fort Collins, town of Berthoud, town of Johnstown, city of Loveland, town of Windsor, town of Timnath, McWhinney and the Prospect Interchange Task Force. Those partners have contributed a total of $55 million to this project. “We are vested in the success of this venture,” said Barbara Kirkmeyer, Weld County commissioner and chair of the North I-25 Coalition. “We look at I-25 as the Main Street for Colorado and this is a real accomplishment to get this done 14 years ahead of schedule. I think it says a lot about the can-do spirit of our region.” The project will: • improve mobility and traffic operations;

• maximize the project scope with the available fiscal resources; • provide a safe facility for the public, as well as a safe work zone for construction crews and the traveling public; • increase intermodal connections; and • ensure the longevity of the project, creating the most value of the investment now and building a high-quality project. This project will begin construction in 2018 and complete in late 2021. During construction, motorists can expect two lanes of travel in each direction to remain open during the daytime, with lane closures occurring at night when traffic volumes are lower. Caltrans is conducting a $171 million project to smooth the drive on I-5 though Santa Clarita in northern Los Angeles County. The I-5 Roadway Rehabilitation Project will replace concrete on 15.8 mi. of freeway from a mi. south of Route 14 to a mile and a half north of Lake Hughes Road. “This section of Interstate 5 has pavement that is more than 50 years old and no longer adequate for current and future traffic loads,” said Malcolm Dougherty, Caltrans director, as ground was broken on the project in late August. The project is expected to be completed in summer of 2019.

“Broken pavement and potholes are the primary problems, especially in the number three and number four lanes due to significant truck traffic,” said Michael Comeaux, public information officer of Caltrans District 7. “The original highway was constructed of concrete pavement as opposed to asphalt.” Heavy usage also has taken its toll on the freeway. “Population growth and increased traffic can justifiably be cited,” Comeaux said. “I-5 is the major connector between the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and California’s Central Valley.” The project involves a segment of I5 that on average, carries more than 200,000 vehicles a day. Between 12

and 14 percent of those vehicles are trucks and more than 70 percent of those are big rigs with five axles or more. Comeaux added that the project will reduce the need for future lane closures for pothole repairs. That will increase safety for motorists and Caltrans maintenance crews on the freeway. Revenue for the I-5 project in Santa Clarita is provided through state and federal sources. The money is placed in an account called State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP), which is designated for the repair and preservation of the California highway system. Prep work included gutting the buildings inside down to bare concrete before actual demolition of the tilt up concrete walls began. Choosing the Right Iron for the Job With an expedited timeline and minimal clearance to neighboring structures, the project’s success hinged on choosing the best per-

forming machines to help raze the more than 350,000 sq. ft. of concrete tilt-up building. These machines would need to move more than 25,000 cu. yds. of debris and more than 1,500 tons of trash quickly and effectively. For the job, R B Holt used Hitachi 350LC and 470LC excavators. Heavily Used Stretch Caltrans reports that more than a million vehicles a week use the stretch of I-5. Driving north, the highway leads to what is known as The Grapevine, a steep 5.5-mi. grade at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley. Crews are working on the 15.8-mi. stretch in Santa Clarita mostly at night, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on weeknights, while keeping at least one or two lanes of traffic open on most nights as the project progresses. Once completed, the new surface will provide a smoother, safer drive for motorists and will reduce time required for future maintenance, which will minimize future lane closures and delays for drivers, Caltrans reported.

The section of I-5 being improved is mostly an eight-lane freeway, four lanes in each direction. However, it narrows to three northbound lanes just north of the I-5 and state Route 14 separation near the project’s southern limit. Contractor Is Well Versed in Highway Construction Prime contractor for the project is Guy F. Atkinson Construction of Irvine, Calif. Over the past 10 years, Atkinson has completed more than 50 transportation infrastructure projects totaling nearly $4 billion. Atkinson Construction was selected through a bid process. Major subcontractors on the project include Advanced Concrete Sawing and Sealing of Mesa, Ariz.; All American Asphalt of Corona, Calif.; Cal Stripe Inc. of Colton, Calif; Harber Companies Inc. of San

Bernardino, Calif.; and MSL Electric Inc. of Anaheim, Calif. Project manager of Caltrans is John K. Lee. Jia Chen is project manager of Atkinson Construction. About 60 workers are on the job daily, with most of the work being done at night.

Removal of Old Pavement Crews removed old pavement from the three and four lanes of the 15.8-mi. stretch of freeway. They also are constructing new concrete pavement as the old pavement is removed. Some of the removed concrete will be recycled for use on the project. “Also, old pavement is being removed and replaced on individual slabs in the number one and number two lanes,” Comeaux said. “This work is being done on the northbound side and on the southbound side of I5.” The work on the southbound side will be done in four stages. It is currently transitioning from stage 1 to stage 2. On the northbound side, work is in stage 1. Heavy equipment on site includes three GOMACO pavers; two Cat wheel loaders; a RexCon batch plant; three excavators; two rollers; and one grader. About 280,000 cu. yds. of concrete will be

laid over the course of the project. Various Concrete Improvements To assure a smoother ride, concrete paving will be continuously upgraded in the outside lanes (lanes three and four). In lanes one and two, broken slabs will be replaced, and the full length of lanes one and two will receive profile grinding to ensure a smooth surface for vehicles. In portions of the roadway with asphalt pavement, concrete pavement will be installed. The guardrail will be upgraded to the current standard. Plan for Peak Construction Times In general, Caltrans plans to keep at least two freeway lanes open for traffic in the construction zone, except between midnight and 4 a.m. when at least one lane will be kept open for traffic. If a full closure becomes necessary for the safety of the public, it is the policy of Caltrans to provide adequate notice to the public before such a closure and to post signs giving drivers a satisfactory detour around the closure. “Caltrans and the contractor are working to ensure that best practices are in place to minimize traffic delays, dust and noise, which have the potential to affect nearby communities,” Comeaux said. “It is worth noting that the project is in and near the city of Santa Clarita, the third largest city in Los Angeles County. There is significant com-

muter traffic on this segment of I-5 so Caltrans and the contractor work in close cooperation to minimize inconvenience to commuters, local residents and businesses that rely on this essential route.” Noise Levels Monitored Noise levels will not exceed state and federal regulations. Still, Caltrans will monitor noise levels during construction to minimize the impact to local neighborhoods. Nearby residents who experience excessive noise related to the project are encouraged to contact Caltrans. No New Lanes … Yet Construction of carpool lanes also called HOV or high occupancy vehicle lanes on I5 in the area is anticipated under a separate project following completion of the I-5 Roadway Rehabilitation Project. Metro (Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority), in cooperation with Caltrans, is conducting the final design for the proposed HOV lanes and extensions of the truck lanes along I-5 from state Route 14 to south of Parker Road in northern Los Angeles County. R B Holt purchased its Hitachi 470 excavator in 2016 and its Hitachi 350 excavator in 2017 — both from Coastline Equipment, a John Deere, Bomag, Hitachi and Wacker Neuson dealer headquartered at 6188 Paramount Blvd., Long Beach, Calif. Additional equipment used on the Tustin job site were a Komatsu WA 500, two Kubota skid steers and an Eagle concrete crusher. With a timeline expectancy of 100 days, R B Holt completed the project in Tustin on schedule in mid-December with more than 100 truckloads of plastic, wood waste and insulation ultimately being transported to local recyclers for sorting and processing — this included 90 percent by weight of all materials that were recycled. More than 400 tons of wood beams from the roof structure were salvaged and will be re-used eventually on other projects. Rivera said he loved working this job site due to location and ease of transportation. “This is right in our backyard from the office,” he said. “Usually, you have to go to LA County for a job this size. Everything was much easier here, because our equipment was right here.” And business is looking good for R B Holt for 2018, according to Rivera. “With a new administration in Washington and residential housing starts up for the first time since 2010 in Southern California. The Los Angeles Metro’s board of directors has decided it will accelerate numerous transportation projects so they are complete by the 2028 Olympic Games. If left on their initial schedules, some of these projects would not be finished until 2041, Curbed reported. Just as the name suggests, the ‘TwentyEight by ‘28’ initiative will focus on speeding up 28 projects that are currently under construction, or planned. “I said I would focus on three themes in the year I was honored to be your chair: To build, to ride and to plan,” said Los Angeles Mayor and Chair of the Metro Board Eric Garcetti. “To improve and accelerate the building of our transit needs, to improve the experience for our riders, and to plan for the future. The Twenty-Eight by ‘28 initiative

weaves all those together.” Accelerated projects include: • the Sepulveda Pass transit corridor; • the West Santa Ana light rail line; • the Green Line extension to Torrance; • the Gold Line extension to Whittier or El Monte; • a “Micro-Transit” initiative to add shuttles similar to Uber; • renovating the Washington/Flower junction; and • an extension of the ExpressLanes on the 10 freeway. Metro has not detailed how it plans to expedite these projects yet, but the motion presented by the board looks at using the 2028 Olympics as a chance to lobby for extra funds, especially from the state and the federal government, Curbed reported. vation and deep foundation systems such as drilled piers. Erection of the structure remains, as well as the installation of the exterior skin system, site work and installation of the exhibit package. Redfern said building a structure of this caliber calls for rethinking every aspect of the typical construction process, with heavy focus on quality control. “How we build, and when we build are unique, requiring our team to look for new solutions to previous tried-andtrue solutions.” Weather has already been an issue during construction, but crews remain optimistic. “In July 2017, we had approximately six inches of rain, which is very unusual for this area. We struggled with that, but the weather has been good since then, and we are on schedule.” The condition of the site prior to construction was level and clear. The project requires close collaboration with the city and adjacent railroad property, to ensure the project is in alignment. A pedestrian bridge is planned to span the railroad tracks and connect at the west side of construction, requiring both preparation and coordination. The structural excavation required shoring to be installed along the south property line, due to the railroad property and close proximity to the tracks. “This is accomplished by drilling holes and installing wide flange beams vertical down into bedrock and grouted. Once beams are installed, excavation proceeds down in five-foot lifts. As a lift is excavated, we install timber lagging onto the surface of the beams, which retains the soil behind. The excavation along this shoring is 22-feet deep.” Roughly 45,000 cu. yds. of dirt/material will be moved on the project. Main equipment being used includes a large tracked excavator and front-end loaders, as well as a conventional 250-ton crawler crane. Concrete and structural steel are among the required materials. The most time-consuming part of the work will involve foundation and structure, which will take nine months. Exterior skin and interior finishes are expected to be completed in about 13

According to Benjamin Gilmartin, partner of architectural firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, “The vision is to create a museum that celebrates the U.S. Olympics and tells the stories of U.S. Olympians and Paralympians. We strive to create a museum where the building and the exhibits become one, to give a universal and fully immersive experience to the visitor. The museum will anchor the new City for Champions district within Colorado Springs, and will be the catalyst for urban development. The client envisions the museum as the most accessible museum ever. Gilmartin said telling the stories and feats of the Olympians and Paralympians has been the biggest

challenge for the creative team, along with capturing the energy and dynamism of the athletes. “Having met with Olympians and Paralympians during the design process, we are awestruck by their dedication and abilities, and we strive to capture some of their grace and energy within the building form.” The building, which tiers down across multiple levels, is contemporary in style. The project is 60,000 sq. ft., with an exhibit space of 20,000 sq. ft. “The dynamic building form is inspired by the energy and grace of Olympians in motion,” said Gilmartin. “The galleries are organized as a series of petals that grow in a spiral out of the central atrium space. The circulation of looking out and pulling in sets up a rhythm and pace for a visitor that allows for varying speeds and interaction with the exhibits.” The design is intended to showcase the experiences of both Olympic and Paralympic athletes. “Visitors enter into the light-filled central atrium and then journey to the top of the building in an elevator, so that all visitors, both able bodied and those with disabilities, travel together to the top, where they start the journey of an Olympic or Paralympic athlete. The exhibits are set along cascading platforms that spiral around the atrium and are connected with a series of ramps. “The journey starts with an introduction to the Olympic and Paralympic Movements, then covers the Journey to Excellence; athlete training; the Parade of Nations; Summer and Winter Games; World Matches; a changing gallery; the Medals Ceremony; and ends with films of the greatest Olympic and Paralympic moments in history, and the Hall of Fame. One of the most dramatic experiences is the Parade of

Nations, where visitors will feel the roaring excitement and energy of walking into the stadium during the opening ceremony.” Sustainability plays a key role in construction, with officials pursuing a LEED Silver rating. “During the design process, we carefully considered integrating and promoting pedestrian and bicycle transportation. We selected local materials with low VOC content. To reduce energy consumption, we are employing an energy-efficient HVAC system and creating a well-insulated building enclosure. The landscape and outdoor gardens utilize low-maintenance native plantings.” For Gilmartin and others involved in the project, helping design the new museum is extremely satisfying. “Knowing that the museum will be the anchor for a downtown renewal is very rewarding. More important, however, it’s an honor to be part of a project that tells such inspiring stories and that will inspire the athletes in all of us to be faster, higher and stronger.” Jamie Fabos, chief communications officer, city of Colorado Springs, said because the museum will be the only one of its kind in the nation, it will make Colorado Springs the premier destination for Olympic fans across the globe. “Along with the presence of 23

Olympic governing bodies, the headquarters of the U.S. Olympic Committee and U.S. Paralympics, as well as the flagship Olympic Training Center, the museum will be the crown jewel of Colorado Springs, Olympic City USA.” A pre-construction feasibility study indicated roughly 350,000 visitors will travel to the city to tour the museum annually, and 80 percent will be from out of state. Officials expect the city’s profile to rise with the opening of the Olympic museum nationally, but especially among international travelers. “The museum is being built in southwest downtown, an area that has been designated as an urban renewal area, and a priority for the city,” said Fabos. “Development has already begun on residential, parking, dining and accommodation establishments in the area surrounding the museum site.” She added, “It’s been fascinating to see the enthusiasm of the community translate into actual brick and mortar development. Howell Tractor & Equipment Brings Heavily Used Equipment Back to Life Howell Tractor & Equipment, a heavy construction and earthmoving equipment dealer serving northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, launched its rebuild program in 2007 refurbishing steel mill pot haulers. Later, in 2011, the company began rebuilding Sennebogen material handlers in response to customer demand for a less expensive alternative — around 50 percent of the price of buying new. Some of the company’s customers also have opted for the refurbishment option to avoid Tier IV interim and Tier IV Final issues. Howell Tractor & Equipment performs three to four of these rebuilds per year. Most recently, it completed a Sennebogen material handler rebuild for a customer on the East Coast. Typically, a 400-hour rebuild will take approximately 10 weeks; however, depending on the customer’s needs, the company can rebuild a Sennebogen in five weeks or less. John Maneno, service manager, Howell Tractor & Equipment, said this timeframe is possible because the company is staffed with one of the largest service departments in the Chicagoland area. He said the company’s service technicians begin every refurbishment with a complete inspection. Then, they will establish a price and timeframe for the rebuild, perform the rebuild on time and on budget, and finally, deliver the equipment to the customer. Howell Tractor & Equipment backs up its work by matching new machine OEM warranties with extended warranties available. Some of the biggest challenges on these rebuilds, Maneno said, are structural repairs that are needed on a machine being rebuilt for its second or third life. These repairs are performed by in-house personnel that follow OEM guidelines. “We also do necessary line bore work with in-house personnel. The more we can control by doing needed work in house, the more cost effective the rebuild can be. It certainly makes the completion time quicker,” said Maneno. The service department also can accommodate special requests, including changing engine types, modifying cooling systems and making modifications to help prevent fires. “We can complete ‘hot slag’ conver-

sions to help prevent damage and injury due to extreme environments of heat and dirt and dust, as well as other modifications the customers feel would prevent premature failures that they have seen before,” said Maneno. In addition to Sennebogen material handlers, Howell Tractor & Equipment also performs refurbishments on KCM (Kawasaki) end loaders, Euclid rigidframe trucks, Kress pot haulers and cranes. Tesla Motors Inc.’s Tax Breaks Top $150M in Nevada for Fiscal Year 2017 CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) Tesla Motors Inc. enjoyed more than $150 million worth of Nevada tax breaks last fiscal year as part of the deal that brought its giant battery factory to an industrial park east of Sparks. An annual report produced by the Governor’s Office of Economic Development shows most of the money was in the form of tax abatements, nearly $115 million. The Nevada Appeal reports Tesla also qualified for nearly $37 million in transferable tax credits, which were purchased by Nevada resorts to offset part of their gambling license fees. Tesla won’t have to pay anything back as long as it continues to meet annual goals toward total investment of $3.5 billion over 10 years. The annual report signed by GOED Director Steve Hill states the company is making “satisfactory progress” toward that goal.

As of Sept. 30, it already had invested $2.6 billion at the “gigafactory,” where 1,335 employees now work — 896 for Tesla Motors and 439 for Panasonic Electronics. Nearly 6,000 construction workers helped build it. Tesla and Panasonic currently are paying an average wage of $45 an hour, the report said. Most of the tax forgiveness qualified for came in the form of sales tax abatements, a total of about $108 million. The rest consisted of $1.39 million in reductions to the Modified Business Tax, $5.59 million from the real property tax and $156,993 on the personal property tax. In addition, Storey County officials report paid annual permitting and plan review fees totaling $620,315 during the fiscal year. Without the county abatements, those fees would have totaled $6.45 million. Tesla also paid $17,132 in permit

and plan fees for work outside the site. The annual reports filed with the Legislative Commission also state the now defunct Faraday Future project that was to create a car factory in Southern Nevada didn’t receive abatement money. The company originally committed $170 million to jump start its factory at the North Las Vegas Apex site. But the $221,603 in abatements the company qualified for were put into a trust until the funding actually materialized. Nevins said this acquisition will only enhance those reputations. “There will be logistical savings for the companies, which will hopefully decrease our expenses and costs, and that should trickle down to the customer,” Nevins said. “But more importantly, there will be significant ways for us to share rental fleets, which will allow us to have better availability and better utilization for both us and our customers. As well as other synergies. “A larger revenue pool for facilities expansion and improvements, as well as enhancements to parts and service, is among the salient aspects of this acquisition and in fact”, according to Nevins, “these benefits are already being experienced.” “We also acquired the facility of International Iron and some of their assets

along with all their employees,” he added. “International Iron was going to close business down, and Earthmovers needed a new facility and employees for its growing business. Adding these resources will allow for additional Florida expansion coming as soon as the end of 2018. We would also look to grow the Texas footprint shortly thereafter.” Strengthening its competitive position among other dealers, however, was the primary reason for the acquisition. “Our claim to fame for all three companies is that we focus on service and customer service as being the most important aspects of us being successful,” Nevins said. “If you look at the lines we carry, they are not considered the full-line manufacturers, so we have to be better than they are at customer service, pricing, support and financing in order to get business. We understand that customer service is the most important thing we do going forward. “As a result of the acquisition, what we bring now is a larger more competitive business in the equipment industry that is able to support more of our customers’ needs on a quicker basis and to also respond to their service needs — that is really our focus. I also would like to convey to people — because people can get worried with these kinds of mergers — is that this is an equipment company merger.

There is no private equity. There is not outside financing other than our existing bank.” Collectively, NED represents 10 major manufacturers across a four-state territory, each embracing the combined operations in NED. It is expected that there will be a significant growth in size, both in terms of number of locations and employees, as well as by geographic diversification, that will provide substantially enhanced opportunities for them as well as NED, according to Nevins. ACPA Names Niederriter as 2018 Chairman of Board The American Concrete Pavement Association has named Chuck Niederriter, chief operating officer of Golden Triangle Construction Company, as its 2018 chairman of the board of directors.
