Joint Venture Takes on San Diego I-5 Project By Irwin Rapoport
Earthwork and road construction operations are pressing forward on an 8-mi. stretch of Interstate 5 (I-5) to enable the busy highway corridor in San Diego County to accommodate two new carpool/high occupancy vehicle (HOV) Lanes — one in each direction — between Lomas Santa Fe Drive in Solana Beach and Palomar Airport Road in Carlsbad. The Flatiron, Skanska and Stacy and Witbeck joint-venture (FSSW) is responsible for the construction, as well as other nearby multi-modal and active transportation projects. The project is part of a phase of construction (referred to as “Build NCC”) of the Caltrans and SANDAG North Coast Corridor Program, a 40-year, $6 billion balanced set of highway, rail, environmental and bike and pedestrian mobility and coastal access projects for north coastal San Diego County. The Build NCC program began in 2017 and is anticipated to be complete in 2022. The $869 million project is funded through a combination of federal, state and local sources, including the TransNet program, a voter approved half-cent countywide sales tax that helps fund regional transportation projects. GOULD, Colo. (AP) Stunned by unprecedented megafires, Colorado is embracing logging — mowing holes up to 140 acres in beetle-infested lodgepole pines — in an effort to revive out-of-balance forests. This for-profit mechanized tree-cutting, concentrated between the blackened Cameron Peak and East Troublesome burn scars, has been clearing 3,000 acres a year. State foresters propose to clear more. At two cutting sites west of Fort Collins recently, hulking red and yellow tractors equipped with whirling hot saws sliced through 12inch trunks of the towering pines, then as they thumped to the ground raked them into bunches. De-limbers stripped off branches. Hooked pinchers hoisted the logs into bussized loads for diesel-belching trucks. Drivers hauled these along icy mountain roads to sawmills at Saratoga and Parshall, where workers convert logs to lumber as a surging national wood-products market pays record prices. This large-scale cutting creates fire breaks “to give firefighters a place to make a stand” and “take out the energy” from inevitable
future record wildfires, Colorado State Forest Service Director Mike Lester said. When lodgepoles grow back, the surrounding broader forests will gain age diversity, with different species such as aspens popping up amid pines on newly-sunlit slopes, Lester said. “In lodgepole forests, if you want to mimic what happens to lodgepole naturally, you do clear-cuts,” he said. “Lodgepole pines naturally regenerate with forest-clearing fires.” Colorado traditionally hasn’t had logging on the industrial scale seen in Oregon and other northwestern states, and forest ecologists warn against clear-cuts that accelerate erosion, degrade wildlife habitat and enable increased human incursions. But state officials now are turning to this large-scale cutting as an alternative to inaction at an especially difficult moment. Across western Colorado, insect attacks on old and drought-enfeebled trees over the past decade have ravaged 5 million acres. For years, ecologists and emergency planners have warned that dying, dry and overlydense forests would lead to massive, ruinous fires.

Hyundai Heavy Industries Group to Acquire Stake in Doosan Infracore Hyundai Heavy Industries Group (HHIG) has been selected as the preferred bidder to acquire Doosan Infracore. Once the acquisition process is completed, the group’s affiliate Hyundai Construction Equipment, combined with Doosan Infracore, will become the No. 5 player in the global construction machinery market, according to HHIG. Doosan Group selected the HHIG-KDB Investment Consortium as the preferred bidder and reported it to its creditors, including Korea Development Bank. The two sides aim to conclude the main contract by the end of 2020 after two to three weeks of additional negotiations. HHIG will acquire a 36.07 percent stake in Doosan Infracore, excluding Doosan Bobcat. The acquisition price is said to be in the mid-700 billion won range, which is lower than the market’s initial estimate of 800 billion won to 1 trillion won. Analysts said that the two companies will be able to generate synergies as their main markets are different. Doosan Infracore fares well in China while Hyundai Construction Equipment excels in India and Russia. Doosan Infracore sold 15,766 excavators in China in the first 10 months of 2020,

Expert Says It’s Vital to Partner With Broker in Industry INSURANCE from page 1
carriers defaulting and pinching healthy carriers even more.” Blake Dickens, commercial lines producer and partner of HUB International MidSouth/Harris, Madden & Powell, Chicago, Ill., looks at four ways commercial insurance is affected: • The evolving role of the broker. “Our customers are looking to their broker for advice more than price these days,” wrote Dickens in a NAXSA article. “We are spending more time on consultative services than ever before.” He said topics most important to customers include COVID-19 privacy and liability employment issues, how to present as a best-in-class risk to underwriters, worker’s compensation eligibility, claims and coverage. “It has never been more important to partner with a broker that specializes in your industry, with risk services capabilities and strong carrier relationships,” he advised. • Increased scrutiny from underwriters. Underwriters are inquiring about every renewal, wrote Dickens. “Before taking risk on, underwriters want to know your business’ pandemic response.” What is your business’ level of exposure with COVID? What are you doing to mitigate it? “Underwriters will want to know that your business is healthy financially before writing new coverage or even renewing an existing policy,” he said. • COVID coverage is being addressed. Most COVID business interruption and property claims are denied based on the inability to prove COVID caused physical loss or damage. “Moving forward, most policies will have very specific language excluding pandemic coverage with COVID coverage most likely cited as well,” wrote Dickens. Where coverage is granted, it will be with specific sub limits and the customer will elect to “buy up,” he said. “There is also potential for a federal ‘backstop’ to address the concern at a catastrophic level.” • Businesses need to think profit and loss management. There is a good chance COVID-19 will further impact insurance costs, said Dickens. “Prepare now. Look at every line item of your business’ profit and loss margins to see what can be redirected,” he suggested. “Have conversations around business strategy and maintain a conservative outlook on spending, while planning for higher insurance rates this year and in the immediate future.” Dickens said that the question still lingers: When will COVID-19 exposure catch up to the market?
He is blunt in his assessment: “The answer is unknown.” As 2021 unfolds, “carriers, brokers and business owners alike will remain watchful for changes in exposure and its resulting effect on the commercial insurance market,” he added. Getting Ahead Times are unprecedented, and that has meant significant work disruption for construction contractors across the country. Project shut-downs and suspensions, supply-chain delays, financing term changes and tossed procurement timetables are other issues contractors have had to face during the pandemic. Eugene Koster, construction lead with global advisory firm Willis Towers Watson, Arlington, Va., offers general insurance and risk-related advice. Engage in and maintain proactive dialogue with your broker and insurers about the status of ongoing projects, he suggests. “Insurance premiums may already have been priced into financial model for live bids,” he said. “In principle, these should not suffer variations directly as a result of the virus, [but] it is advisable to review as you near the bid submission date to ensure validity of terms where there is a delay. Check cancellation clauses. Also, be aware that physical damage to or loss of your work directly caused by abandoning a building site might be argued by insurers. “A policyholder is obliged as per the policy conditions to prevent physical damage to occur,” even if a building site is abandoned, noted Koster. “Therefore, it is advisable if a building site is temporarily abandoned to take enough measurers in order to prevent damages to occur.” Delay in start-up extensions might be impacted by a delay in the project due to COVID-19. Consider closely any impact on the estimated date of delivery and on the project’s critical path, he urged. The insured is obliged to inform insurers in any circumstances that lead to an increase of the exposure for insurers. “If you feel COVID-19 leads to such circumstances, please inform your insurance broker as soon as possible,” said Koster. Once a project has been delivered or an insurance year has ended, there are often maximum periods for an insured to notify insurers about the final project value or final annual turnover. If contractors do not comply, insurers may be entitled to ask for 130 percent of the deposit premium due and deny any refund of premium. Under COVID-19 circumstances premiums due still need to be paid in time in order
to avoid insurance covers to terminate leaving your balance sheet exposed. “Be aware of premium payment warranties. In certain countries under international programs the principle of “no cash no cover” applies. Eye on Market Decisions and responses from underwriters could take more time, noted Koster. He suggests starting the renewal process as early as is practical. He reminds contractors that despite the pandemic, temporary extensions are rare and only done on a case-by-case basis. Your risk management advisor may require more information for a renewal and quotations could contain more subjectivities. “Markets will experience more difficulties in respect of coverage,” said Koster. “Insurers might be more critical and provide less capacity at higher premiums for certain type of covers.” He suggested contractors act swiftly on received requests and quotations. Bind coverage while it is valid in order to secure capacity, avoiding subjectivities, lack of capacity or increase of premiums. If a temporary construction project suspension is considered, maintain security on the job site. On its website, the AGC has posted an extensive resource list for coronavirus-related issues in the area of insurance coverage. One area of particular interest to contractors is a policyholders’ checklist developed by Richard Brown of SDV Law, which specializes in insurance coverage. Brown, a partner with the Trumbull, Conn.-based firm, writes policyholders should communicate with everyone along the risk management pipeline. During these unprecedented times, communication is key “… even if it is not certain whether they will need to file insurance claims,” he said. Specific policy terms, and the way losses are documented and presented to insurance carriers, is pivotal in securing coverage for coronavirus-related exposures. A careful review of the policyholder’s insurance program may show coverage for the coronavirus outbreak, said Brown. “Now is the time to assess, with the guidance of your brokers and insurance coverage counsel, the specific coverages in place.” Review the terms and conditions of your Property, General Liability, Pollution, Directors & Officers, Professional Liability, Fiduciary Liability, as well as Event Cancelation Insurance coverages. “For instance, policyholders would want to assess, ahead of time, whether there are bacterial/virus/communicable diseases/pandemics exclusions in their policies,” he said.
“It is also relevant to review, with a keen eye, the insuring agreements and pose hypotheticals to stress test them and see how far coverage would go with respect to a coronavirus exposure.” Risk managers and/or insurance personnel need to intimately understand the various ways COVID-19 will impact their particular business. Detailed conversations with department heads and chief executives will help to understand exposure, focus resources and prepare a game plan in the insurance and risk management fronts. “Communication should be daily to refine the understanding as the exposure continues to develop,” said Brown. “Marrying that knowledge with available insurance coverage will prove fruitful if the risk materializes.” Keep in mind, brokers have firsthand information of the impact of COVID-19 on the insurance marketplace. They know your business and your insurance program and can keep you advised of potential gaps in coverage as the exposure evolves. Constant and open communication with brokers will make the process of giving notice, and lodging an insurance claim, smoother, said Brown. It will “potentially avoid miscommunication issues that can impact the narrative presented to carriers for coverage,” he added. Generally, late notice of an insurance claim does not invalidate an insured’s rights to coverage unless the insurer proves actual prejudice due to late notice in certain states. But Brown said it is best practices to give prompt notice of any claim, and particularly give notice of any circumstance that may give rise to a claim, to the insurance carriers. “This will engage the carrier early on as the loss progresses and avoids unnecessary disputes later over issues like late notice, voluntary payments or assumption of liability. It’s also a key aspect if the policy is soon to expire or if it is a claims-made basis policy like is often the case in pollution policies, he added. Once prompt notice is given to the carriers, policyholders should carefully document facts involving any potential or actual losses as well as costs and losses incurred. This is key in all coverages but particularly in property and business interruption coverages. Brown noted that employer’s liability coverage could be also impacted by the coronavirus threat. “As such, policyholders of all trades should be mindful of their general duty to provide a workplace free from recognized hazards causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm.” CEG

Husqvarna Expands, Acquires Blastrac Husqvarna Group’s construction division has signed an agreement to acquire Blastrac, a provider of surface preparation technologies for the global construction and remediation industry. “The acquisition of Blastrac strengthens and complements our organic growth ambitions, as we are further expanding into complementary surface preparation solutions. (AP) Three towering concrete stacks that were the most visual reminders of a coal-fired power plant that operated for decades along the Arizona-Utah state line came down on Dec. 18, 2020. The 775-ft. (236-m) structures loomed over the Navajo Generating Station, a 2,250 megawatt plant that closed in 2019 as natural gas became a cheaper alternative for electricity. Their flashing lights became a beacon in the community and a sign to travelers in a remote area that they were approaching Page. “I have mixed emotions because I've spent most of my life as a constructor, and now I’m wearing a different hat in the demolition mode,” said Gary Barras, a project management director of the Salt River Project, the Arizona utility that operated the plant. “I know personally how hard it was to design and build those stacks.”
A series of booms echoed through the region that includes iconic tourist destinations such as Lake Powell, slot canyons and Horseshoe Bend as the stacks fell one by one. Clouds of dust covered what's left of the power plant, sitting low on the landscape before drifting away. Thousands of people lined roadways and gathered in parking lots to watch it happen. Environmentalists and some members of the Navajo and Hopi tribes fought years to shut down the plant that was among the largest in the West in favor of a switch to renewable energy. “We are witnessing an artifact of a time when a coal-fired power plant was preferable to damming the Grand Canyon,” said Roger Clark of the Grand Canyon Trust. “We’ve since learned that cooking the planet to keep Phoenicians cool is a bad idea.” The power plant was built to power the
Southwest and a canal system that delivers Colorado River water to Arizona’s major metropolitan areas. It shut down in November 2019. The stacks came down in a way that’s similar to cutting down a tree. Crews sawed the back side of the stacks so they would fall to the northeast largely on to concrete pads where water treatment, ash handling and brine concentrator systems once stood. Crews also gutted transformers, wiring and elevators from the first 30 ft. (9 m) of the stacks to prepare. Small blocks of concrete were cut and knocked out of the structures to weaken them. Windows and vents were removed and reinforced to keep the stacks from twisting, said Nathan Betts, construction manager for Tetra Tech, the company overseeing contractors on site. To prevent the stacks from falling earlier, crews didn’t release the last bit of tension
until the morning of. Dec. 18 before detonating about 1,530 lbs. of dynamite. The stacks fell sequentially within seconds of one another. Crews will come in after the dust settles to separate rebar from concrete and recycle what they can. No one was allowed within a 2,000-ft. (609-m) radius of the stacks for safety reasons. The original stacks were the same size but had been reduced to 220 ft. (67 m). They came down earlier this year. The work is part of a $150 million decommissioning of the plant that is on land leased by the Navajo Nation. The buildings that housed the boilers — what Barras called the proverbial tea kettles — will go next, he said. Environmentalists said they’ll keep close watch to ensure the plant is cleaned up as required before the land is turned over to the Navajo Nation.

Ames Construction Crews Replacing Arizona’s U.S. 60 Pinto Creek Bridge Crews from Ames Construction, along with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), are replacing the Pinto Creek Bridge, located on U.S. 60 about 6 mi. west of Miami, Ariz. Work started in October 2019, and the project is expected to take about two years. The project involves constructing a new bridge adjacent to the existing bridge and then removing the existing bridge. Project Purpose The Pinto Creek Bridge was built to standards in 1949; however, those standards no longer meet the current minimum FHWA, American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) and ADOT Bridge Design Guidelines. The purpose of this project is to address a structurally deficient and functionally obsolete bridge structure while ensuring that the travelling public is provided a reliable bridge crossing over Pinto Creek preserving the continuity of U.S. 60 and its function as a major transportation link.
Work started in October 2019 and the project is expected to take about two years.
scheduled closures of U.S. 60 will be required at the following times: • Possible overnight closures to set steel girders and place bridge-deck concrete (tentatively late winter/spring 2021). • A five-day closure of U.S. 60 will be scheduled when the bridge is nearing completion (tentatively summer 2020). • During scheduled closures of US 60, motorists will be detoured to State Route 77 and State Route 177. This detour will likely add at least 45 minutes to a trip, however, travel time may be significantly longer depending on the driver’s starting point and destination. ADOT will provide advance notice of restrictions and closures through message boards, news releases and email alerts.
Traffic Impacts The existing bridge will remain in service until the new bridge is completed. Motorists should expect possible delays and intermittent lane closures with flaggers and pilot cars throughout the project. New 5,000-Seat Arena Coming to Arizona State University Arizona State University and Sun Devil Athletics recently announced all required approvals have been received for the commencement of construction on a new multipurpose arena, which will host university and community events and serve as the future home for Sun Devil men's ice hockey, wrestling and women’s gymnastics. This project continues the development of the Novus Innovation Corridor, and will be sited south of Rio Salado Parkway on the east side of Packard Drive, immediately north of the existing Packard Drive Parking Structure. The 5,000-seat venue will be managed and operated by Oak View Group; SCI Architects have designed the arena, while Mortenson Construction will serve as the design builder. Construction is scheduled to begin in January 2021, with full completion projected for December 2022. “Mortenson is proud to partner with Arizona State University to bring their vision to life,” said Vice President, General
Manager of Mortenson Ben Goetter. “This is a momentous time for these programs, and we are excited to play a part in this transformational project. Together, with Arizona State University and our partners, we have worked hard to get to where we are today and we are excited to break ground.” In addition to housing Sun Devil Athletics’ events and competitions, the multipurpose arena, which also includes an adjacent community ice rink, will serve as a public venue for the university and community to host concerts, conferences, youth competitions, educational opportunities and more. The second full-size ice sheet will also be accessible to students, the community and youth ice hockey programs at every level, providing an additional public sheet to one of the fastest-growing states for youth hockey participation in the country. The addition of the multipurpose arena positions the Novus Innovation Corridor to host group events in sizes ranging from 50 to 55,000 people.
“We’re thrilled to be selected as the team that will manage, operate and secure additional programming and content for the new home of Sun Devil hockey, wrestling and women’s gymnastics,” said Peter Luukko, chairman of Oak View Group Facilities. “We look forward to working with Ray and his ASU Athletics Department in creating an electrifying atmosphere inside the new ASU multipurpose arena.” The seating configuration for the multipurpose arena includes 20 luxury suites, two group suites, a large club lounge and eventlevel premium club seats. The club lounge will consist of a Center Ice Club on the main concourse that runs along center ice and can host up to 500 fans. On the 300-level, a social deck will run the length of the east side of the venue, providing an open-air, aerial view of the arena where fans can interact while still experiencing exceptional sightlines to the competition. The arena would also be able to serve as a backup for sports played on hardwood, such as volleyball.
Additionally, a 942-seat student section will occupy the entire west side of the venue to provide an enhanced gameday experience for ASU students. “This venue will not only provide an elite student-athlete experience, but will be an asset to our community and continue to bring life to the Novus Innovation Corridor,” said Vice President of University Athletics Ray Anderson. “There has been so much work done behind the scenes to get to this point, and we look forward to debuting it to our fans and the local community.” More than 8,000 sq. ft. is set aside for a ASU locker room, weight room, lounge and coaches’ offices on the north side of the arena. Eight additional locker rooms are accounted for on the west side of the arena between the main arena and community ice sheet that can be utilized for visiting teams, youth programs, ASU club programs, and live events.

Arizona DOT Lends Helping Hand to Trucking Industry Faced with the delicate balance of keeping people safe and the economy going during the pandemic, Gov. Doug Ducey and the Arizona Department of Transportation made moves to assist the trucking industry to keep the supply of essentials like groceries and medical supplies flowing to Arizona communities. In April, ADOT issued new rules that temporarily allowed commercial vehicles providing direct assistance to COVID-19 relief efforts to operate with a gross weight up to 90,000 lbs. without an overweight permit. The normal limit is 80,000 lbs. This included, among other essential items, medical supplies related to the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19, supplies necessary for community safety and preventing the spread of COVID-19 and food and household items for emergency restocking of stores. In addition to raising weight limits to allow for more essential supplies into Arizona, ADOT initiated a few vital rest area-related projects to help support commercial vehicles. ADOT temporarily reopened two long-
closed rest areas near Flagstaff exclusively for commercial vehicles in early April. ADOT crews quickly prepared the Christensen Rest Area on Interstate 17 and the Parks Rest Area on Interstate 40 to offer parking, portable toilets and handwashing facilities for long-haul truckers. The reopening of these rest areas provided an additional 44 parking spaces for commercial vehicles. Nearly 100 permanent truck parking spaces were added to two rest area locations along Interstate 40 by mid-summer. Haviland Rest Area received 38 new parking spaces between its two facilities, while Meteor Crater Rest Area received 56 spaces at its facilities. The Haviland project was fast-tracked specifically in response to the COVID-19 pandemic while the parking spaces at Meteor Crater were added to an existing project to renovate both the Meteor Crater Rest Area and the Painted Cliffs Rest Area. Gov. Ducey also issued an Executive Order in April allowing food trucks to operate at several ADOT rest areas in order to provide longhaul truckers carrying those essentials with nutritious food while aiding the food truck business during the pandemic.

How to save thousands of dollars while developing 5,592 mi. of land, how to demolish a 16-floor building, how to fly a crusher in an helicopter: these are the most amazing jobs completed in 2020, and MB Crusher units were used to overcome obstacles on the job site. Carrying Crusher On Helicopter With the Bavarian Alps in the background: a lodge at a 6,050 ft. summit needed to be partially demolished and rebuilt. This also is the starting point of a very long hiking trail. Traditionally the demo waste material
would have to be hauled downstream and discarded. Solution: they used a BF60.1 MB mobile crusher to process the material and use it as road base for the surrounding paths. How did they bring it to the lodge when a helicopter can only carry a max of 2,645 lb.? A few of the crusher bucket’s heavier components were removed and then reassembled quickly on site. Results: significant savings on both waste disposal and hauling fees, reuse of the resulting material directly on site. To Demolish a 16-Floor Building In the center of a large city in Japan the goal was to tear down a 16-floor reinforced concrete building, surrounded by other properties and city life. Compact and agile machines were required to work on the roof of the building to demolish it one floor at a time. The demo waste was then tossed down a hole that was opened in the center of the building, to protect the surrounding area. Solution: they chose a BF70.2 MB mobile crusher that processed reinforced concrete in a narrow space. The cherry on top? The crusher bucket was lifted to the 16th floor with a crane: due to the unit’s size
and weight this task was very easy. Results: material hauling time saved, and significant reduction of dust and sound emissions. To Build Underground Drainage Canal To avoid flooding a high traffic road, with the construction of an underground drainage canal. Problem: the long, difficult and dark tunnel didn’t allow access to the traditional equipment used on similar projects, and the use of a hammer would have caused excessive vibrations. Solution: they used a MB-R500 drum cutter to dig a tight and long tunnel. A compact machine packed with power. Results: no vibrations or cracked walls, and a precise removal of only the required material. Saving Thousands of Dollars While Developing More Than 5,592 Mi. of Surface In a vast area in Montana, a contractor had the task of preparing the site of a new residential area. During the excavation phase they ran into large amounts of river rock.

BladeCore Announces Its New NiCore Premium Blade Series
NiCore blades currently are available through BladeCore for Fortress, Genesis and LaBounty shears as well as many other types of stationary shears.
BladeCore, a supplier of mobile shear and stationary shear blades, introduced its new NiCore premium blade series. Made from high-alloy material with a 4 percent nickel content, these blades are yielding an average of 60 to 80 percent longer per edge than a standard blade, according to the manufacturer. During a trial with almost 75 customers, more than 90 percent concluded that they preferred blades comprised of this material because of the additional output of processed scrap. “We used to go through two or more blade kits a year and we’re down to one now, which is huge. The additional savings from less down time is also great for us,” a Pennsylvania customer said. NiCore blades currently are available through BladeCore for Fortress, Genesis and LaBounty shears as well as many other types of stationary shears. Timber Company Turns Panels With Caldwell Posi-Turner Freres Lumber Co. Inc. is using a 22,500-lb. (11.25-ton) capacity Caldwell Posi-Turner to turn loads at its Mass Plywood Panels facility in Lyons, Ore. The Posi-Turner, which is designed to rotate bulky and hard-to-handle objects during manufacture or assembly processes, is operated beneath the hook of a 15-ton capacity overhead crane to flip panels in the lumber and timber company’s finishing area. The 180,000 sq. ft. facility (one of three Oregon locations) is serviced by seven overhead cranes, ranging in capacity from 5 to 15 tons, all provided by U.S. Crane & Hoist, also of Oregon. Some of them are fitted with two hoists and tandem lifts are commonplace at the world’s first veneer-based mass timber production facility. Kyle Freres, vice president of operations at Freres Lumber, said, “We needed the ability to flip panels and the Posi-Turner has been a fantastic fit. I even saw one of our employees flipping a unit of plywood recently, which just shows how flexible the product is. It is used sporadically depending on the job and it has been very efficient. The straps are easy to hook up and the unit is easy to operate. I don’t believe we have had to do any maintenance, other than replacing damaged straps.” He added, “Typically our panels weigh about 37 lbs./cubic foot. explained, commercial timber construction is a growing industry in the United States due to its sustainability and ability to be pre-manufactured, which can cut construction costs and dramatically reduce labor. The facility produces panels in 8, 10 or 12 ft. widths, up to 48 ft. long, with thicknesses ranging up to 24 in. Almost all products present a requirement for custom computer numerical control (CNC) work in order to reduce labor on the job site, meaning practically that the company — and the PosiTurner — handle a wide variety of product dimensions. Freres said, “We move product from our conveying system by crane to our CNC decks, and then off again when work is complete. We handle them again in the finishing area for many different activities including painting, attachment of pick points, and other tags. We also flip many panels depending on the requirements of the job.” Recently the company produced a mat product with two half-lap edges on each item. The Posi-Turner was used to flip every other panel to add pick points on alternating sides so that the half-laps would fit together properly when the pieces were laid down. Freres continued, “We take what looks like a standard sheet of plywood — but isn’t — and scarf it into a long product called structural composite lumber. We use [4 ft.- and 2 ft.-wide] billets to construct larger panels to the appropriate size required for the project. Those pieces are sent to a [CNC] machine to be finished. The front-mount snowblower is positioned in front of the machine, rather than behind on a 3-point hitch. Mack’s New Geotab Connected Mack Trucks announced the availability of Geotab Connected by Mack, a new integrated, expandable open telematics platform for fleet managers and drivers which includes access to fleet management, Electronic Logging Device (ELD) and driver compliance solutions.
